Festival International Photo Retrospective BY PHILIP GOULD
6
LAFAYETTE CONVENTION AND VISITORS COMMISSION
· 2018
Since the very first Festival International de Louisiane in 1987 photographer Philip Gould has captured moments that show how the unique festival has grown to become one of the largest non-ticketed Francophone events in the world. We have partnered with him to showcase some of his most memorable moments from years past. We hope you enjoy this Festival International photo retrospective by Philip Gould.
I have photographed Festival International nearly every year since its debut in 1987 to the present. It has been an honor to be at the birth, to bear witness to its growth, and to document its long, rich life. Festival International has done more to transform Lafayette from a city still steeped in Cajun and Creole tradition to one that connects creatively to the entire world. Each year, the festival invites performers from nearly every continent to perform downtown in what is effectively our village. With this presentation you will find different images taken at festival, running consecutively, from 1987 to 2015. If the festival has been part of your life over the years, I hope the photographs will trigger fond memories for you. If you have not yet had the chance to see it for yourself, I hope these images will inspire you to get in a car, on a train, or an airplane and come join us.

Tuning drums by fire. Members of the Rwanda Master Drummers heat tune their drums before performing at the first Festival International de Louisiane in July 1987. Their performance was at the very least an eye opener for Lafayette. The notion of tuning drums by fire revealed just how connected these master drummers were to the elements.

One other note, several years after their performance Rwanda became embroiled in a deadly civil war between Hutus and Tutsis. The fact that some members of the group may have not survived this conflict was profoundly sad. I only hold the gratitude that they were able to share their talents and open our ears and eyes to their faraway world beforehand.
Members of the Assemblee du Pays Normand in France also performed the first year of the Festival in 1987. Their traditional performance attire was suited for the chilly Normandy climate. Nonetheless, members performed in full cold weather woollens to share musical customs with us that first year — in July.

Burundi Master Drummers perform in Lafayette for the first time in 1989. Like their counterparts from neighboring Rwanda, these folks also had a strong tradition of performance with traditional drums. I took one of my favorite festival photographs then, which showed a drummer fully airborne striking the drum from peak height.

Festival International was not simply about music. It also provided opportunities for folks to see art works from here and afar. Louisiana landscape painter Elemore Morgan was a good example. At an event entitled Tatooed Walls in 1990, he joined other artists painting in real time as his efforts were projected on a large outdoor wall. The event was sponsored by Lafayette Artists Alliance.
One meaningful element of Festival International de Louisiane was the opportunity it offered for local musicians to perform in an international context. Case in point, iconic Cajun fiddler Dennis McGee performed at the first festival in 1987 backed up by partner Sady Courville and long-time student Michael Doucet.

I still remember the Ondekoza Drummers from Japan. When they performed in 1992 for Bach Lunch at the old Lafayette Natural History Museum, I remember feeling transported in my imagination to Japan. This scene offers no clue the group is performing in south Louisiana. The setting feels instead like the ancient gardens of a Japanese shrine. 2018 LafayetteTravel.com

The most stirring personal festival moment occurred during the Saturday promenade in 1991. I had perched myself on the roof of the old City Hall to photograph the parade as it headed up Jefferson Street. When I saw a procession of New Orleans Mardi Gras Indians followed by Burundi Master Drummers and the News Orleans’ Plastic Systems Band, each group with Boy Scouts holding identifying banners, it felt like the exotic world was on parade in our village.
Echasseurs de Namur, Belgian stilt walkers were also a treat to witness as they conducted their battles on stilts in 1989, to be the last stilt walker standing. I also was able to photograph one stilt walker posing with a kora player from Mali.

A. Beasely’s Puppets performed in 1990 at the Place des Enfants. I loved how this woman created another alternate universe with her cape, all there for children’s imaginations.

John Mayall made a festival appearance in 1990 jamming on stage with Lafayette’s famed guitarist Sonny Landreth. It was a treat to see this British bluesman perform live. I remember him from long ago when I was growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area. Mayall channeled the mainline of blues from Mississippi to Chicago across to the UK and back as did many other British musicians of that time. As he played along with Sonny, Mayall seemed to be goading him to dig deeper into the soul of his slide guitar. At that moment John Mayall was both master and rascal.
In 1992, I watched this compelling group Ra Ra Machine from Haiti transport the audience through the musical paces of their Caribbean home. Yet through it all, one could see in the keyboardist’s dancing braids, the group’s rhythmic energy.
Another telling moment came in 1996 when Cape Verde superstar Cesaria Evora performed at the festival. She stood simply on stage in bare feet and flowing dress as she sang. It was only after I looked to my left and saw a young lady entranced with her heroine, was the moment complete. She was bonding with Cesaria all while holding her CD booklet close.

Fanfare Zebaliz from France performs at the 1996 Festival. The group combined old time jazz with a visual sense of zaniness all done with French panache. One day, the group performed for French Immersion students at Plantation Elementary School in Lafayette. I enjoyed watching as the saxophonist infused her creative energy and joy to some of the students listening.
In 1996 like all years before and after, food vendors would stir vats of crawfish, red beans and rice all staples on sale for a good timing diet.
Hunter Hayes was only five years old when he made his first festival appearance in 1997. He was already exhibiting the presence and charisma of the star he was to become.

Since the Festival’s beginning, French Immersion school students have carried the flags of participating countries through the streets of Lafayette and onto the main stage. As a group, they formed a multinational backdrop in this photograph for the 1998 opening ceremonies.
Paul Hernandez of Pouparts Bakery in Lafayette, turned French bread into alligator-sized performance art at his food booth.

Food was a vital component both for festival goers and performers. John Smith was a leader of the Bubbas in 1999, an ad hoc 15 group that cooked for performers backstage. LafayetteTravel.com Visit

The group Mucca Pazza makes the turn in the festival promenade from Vermilion onto Jefferson Street. Over the years, this short parade has been a favorite event. It is where the serendipitous energy of numerous performers gets channeled onto a single street. The promenade passes quickly and often dissolves into street performance and theater. I found Mucca Pazza fun to watch. They embodied an unlikely blend of high school band, Balkan gypsy music and psychedelics. 18

A member of Ilê Ayê, a group from Brazil performs for the 2009 festival. I happened to be up close as she crawled across the stage. I enjoyed being that close to a singer who was connecting to a huge crowd as she sang.
Gangbe Brass Band, from the West African country of Benin, was compelling to see and hear. In their concert, the group created a musical space where the windy sounds of the Sahara desert could blend with western jazz and big band melodies. In effect their music connected the Sahara to New Orleans.

Theodore Lolo Beabrun lead singer of the Haitian group Boukman Eksperyans, kept the 2011 audience and himself under a trance as he performed from a space deep in his Haitian soul. Festival goers in 2013 at the intersection of Jefferson and Vermilion Streets. I have always enjoyed seeing the hordes of people gathered downtown during festival. Capturing everyone in kinetic connectedness as they moved through the 19 square also an enjoyable challenge. LafayetteTravel.com Visit was

FIELD GUIDE Can you feel it? The excitement of people passing each other on the street shouting, “Happy Festival,” while the smell of Bon Creole’s crawfish bread bowl wafts in the air can mean only one thing. Festival International is here! If you’re a Lafayette local or if you come in every year you know Festival International isn’t just a festival, it’s a holiday-like celebration here in south Louisiana. The stirring of excitement is felt throughout the town with everyone getting ready for five days of non-stop fun and excitement. There’s so much to do it can be overwhelming for any newcomer so we’ve put together a field guide to help with your planning.
For the Kids
What to Wear
Can’t find a babysitter? No worries! Festival International is great for kids too. There’s a great area for them to enjoy the festival with other kids their age. Visit the Chevron Scène des Jeunes stage on the Cathedral Carmel School Campus for music, face painting, food and drink, restrooms, and physical activities to let the kiddos get their energy out. Another great area to bring the little ones is by the courthouse. They’ll love the “half heads” that line the courthouse and it’s a great shady area to enjoy music and outdoor fun.
We suggest shopping for your festival outfits ahead of time. Local clothing shops will start carrying the best and coolest (we’re talking temperature, it is south Louisiana) festival wear leading up to festival. Not into planning ahead? No worries. There are plenty of clothing vendors throughout the festival grounds to buy your outfit for the next day or for a mid-day wardrobe change. Comfort is key when it comes to footwear. Be sure to choose your comfiest shoes because you’ll be doing a lot of walking and dancing all weekend long.
O U R A DV I C E
O U R A DV I C E
As you make your festival schedule think about eye-spy ideas for your kids like the “half-heads” at the courthouse mentioned above, various murals throughout downtown buildings, or even historic buildings. You can also buy a disposable camera for your little one to document their festival experience for their scrap book.
If you want some authentic festival wear, make sure to check out the official Festival International merchandise tent as they always have really comfortable shirts and some other accessories to add to your look. We also recommend bringing a hat and sunglasses to help with the heat. And seriously, we aren’t kidding on wearing comfortable shoes. For this festival, comfort is greater than fashion.

It’s always a good idea to pack a bag with essentials like sunscreen, hand sanitizer, mosquito repellent, wet wipes, change of clothes, hand fan or misting fan if you’re fancy, bandana to wipe your brow, and if you’re feeling over prepared a small first aid kit. If you plan on staying at a stage for an act or two it may be a good idea to bring a chair that’s easy to carry around. Please just be considerate of other festival goers and set up in a space that doesn’t block foot traffic or keep others from enjoying the performances.
Make a schedule. Festival International has made it very easy to create your own schedule on their website FestivalInternational. org. It also links up to their mobile app (search “Festival International de Louisiane” in your app store) so it can send reminders about when and where you’re supposed to be. Not sure what bands you should see? Check out Festival International’s official playlist on Spotify to preview the bands.
What to Eat
O U R A DV I C E
The music isn’t the only thing that’s international at this festival. The food available for purchase is like a mini tour of the world. If you’re craving cajun and creole favorites there’s plenty to go around, but there are also other international cuisines to sample like Greek, French, Asian, Indian and much more. Don’t be afraid to try something new. One of the great things about Festival International is getting to experience the different flavors from all over the world right in our backyard.
Bring an eating partner! You’ll get to sample twice as much food making it easier to try new things. Like the music, we also recommend planning ahead. You can check out the list of all the food vendors for this year’s festival which makes it easier than walking around trying to decide what to eat. Bon appétit!
What to Drink Yes, beverages deserve their own section! If you’re into brews or mixed drinks, Festival International has the drink to help you pass a good time! Stop by the LA Craft Biergarten during festival to try local brews, and listen to live music. If you’re looking for something refreshing and not too heavy when it’s hot try the Festival Punch, which can be found at any of the mixed drink stations. This classic rum punch is served ice cold in an awesome souvenir cup, perfect for a hot festival day. If you need to keep the kids cool there are plenty of soft drink stations as well as everyone’s favorite lemonade stand near the food booths. 48
O U R A DV I C E Try a different local beer each day at LA Craft Biergarten. This is an awesome opportunity to find a new go-to brew! Also, don’t bring your own beer or ice chest to festival. One of the ways Festival International is funded is through the beer and alcohol sales. So put up the ice chest and stop by an ATM on the way and do your part to help support the festival.

Where to Shop
O U R A DV I C E
Shopping at Festival International is not an average day at the mall, or any store for that matter. The booths that line Vermilion Street and surround Parc Sans Souci are full of art, clothing, jewelry, and different items from around the world. The Marché des Arts is the perfect place to gift shop for birthdays, Mother and Father’s Day gifts, and even Christmas if you plan that far ahead. While you’re shopping be on the lookout for the Festival Merchandise tent and Festival Pin stations where you can buy official merchandise and a commemorative pin to help support the festival.
Go early. Shopping at festival can be an all-day affair, the early morning is always a bit cooler and the crowd is calm. You can enjoy a nice leisurely stroll through the shops to find the best festival souvenirs. Heard music you like at one of the stages? Be sure to stop by the Festival Music tent to purchase their CD and support the musical artist.
Not to be Missed Keep an eye out for street performers! These visual, performing, and musical acts are scattered all around Downtown Lafayette during Festival International. Performances range from a singer songwriter performing on a corner to elaborate stilt walkers, larger than life puppets, and even marching bands. Also, keep your eyes peeled for “Tattooed Walls” and add it to your schedule. This is long standing tradition where International and local artists team up with local musicians and DJ’s to create temporary works of art.
O U R A DV I C E Make plans to check out the Rhythm & Roots series at the Blue Moon Saloon after Festival International. The Blue Moon brings together both local and international acts to individually play full sets as well as coming together at the end of the night to collaborate on stage together. Just be sure to buy your passes ahead of time as this series tends to sell out quickly.

Azalea Trail A sure sign that spring has arrived in Lafayette is the abundance of azaleas in a spectrum of reds, pinks, whites, purples and salmons. The Lafayette Azalea Trail begins at our Visitor Center located at 1400 NW Evangeline Thwy and meanders through the city passing many notable landmarks.
Approximately 20 miles of Lafayette city streets are lined with azaleas that adorn beautiful homes and historical sites. Some of the bushes of gigantic proportions are over 50-years-old. In Lafayette the predominant variety is the Formosa, christened the “General Lafayette,” which blooms in colors of lavender and fuchsia. The azalea, a native of East Asia, was brought to the Gulf Coast area over two centuries ago. The azalea ranges in size from dwarf to jumbo. The name “azalea” came about in the 1700s and is of Greek origin meaning “dry.” This is because the azalea is a flowering shrub that blooms during the spring and thrives in dry soil. In Chinese culture azaleas are called “xiang shu” which translates to “thinking of home bush” because it is a shrub that represents thoughtfulness and pensiveness.

L A FAY E T TE’S
Ancient Oaks In South Louisiana, live oaks are history, heritage, and heirlooms all rolled into one. They offered shade and protection for the first settlers’ homes along Louisiana’s bayous and rivers. On the old land maps, they marked property lines. Duels were fought and honor won or lost under their arched limbs. People picnic under them, get married under them, dance the two-step under them, and finally when the music ends, are laid to rest near their roots.
In 1934, Dr. Edwin Lewis Stephens, first president of Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) proposed the creation of an organization made up entirely of the largest and oldest live oak trees in Louisiana. His vision was that the organization’s membership would include trees whose size and age made them significant cultural and natural resources, worth identifying and preserving for future generations to enjoy. From his orientation as a scholar and writer, Stephens recognized the deeper truth of this Southern icon—the live oak symbolically reflects the most distinctive characteristics of the cultures and people that settled this rich alluvial area: strength of character, forbearance, longevity, and a hearty nature. Beginning with just 43 inductee oaks in 1934, the Live Oak Society’s roster of member oaks now counts more than 8,300 registered trees across 14 southeastern U.S. states. In the Lafayette area, there were 12 oaks among the original 43 charter members. Today, more than a thousand oaks in the Lafayette area are listed on the society’s registry.
For more information and images of these oaks visit LafayetteTravel.com/Lafayettes-Ancient-Oaks. In the meantime be sure to check out these ancient oaks in the Acadiana area on your next visit to Cajun & Creole Country.
