Your Guide to the 45th Annual Festivals Acadiens et Créoles

Written by

Laura Lee

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW World-famous cuisine, generous hospitality and legendary music by Louisiana’s Cajuns and Creoles are celebrated each year at Festivals Acadiens et Créoles in Lafayette. From October 10-13, visitors and locals can savor the most colorful culture in America with three days of music, art, food, and fun.

The History The festival was founded in 1974 to preserve, inspire and celebrate Cajun and Creole culture and the authentic music of Acadiana. French Catholic Canadians, or Acadians, first came to Louisiana in the late 1700s, seeking religious and cultural freedom. Early settlers lived among Native American Indians, French, Spanish immigrants, and AfricanAmericans, creating a rich gumbo of cultures. Those hailing from Canada became known as Cajuns while French-speaking people of color became known as Creoles. Today, many Creoles and Cajuns still speak French and worship at the Catholic church. Creole and Cajun food are very similar, but Creole food is often affiliated with New Orleans and is considered city food, while Cajun food is typically more straightforward, country food. Both Cajuns and Creoles are responsible for creating the distinct sounds of South Louisiana, now known throughout the world. What’s New In addition to the great line-up of performers, food vendors and artisans, festival organizers are putting the spotlight on women in Cajun and Creole music. Barry Jean Ancelet, the original founder and president of the festival board, says that women are not only essential performers, musicians and the subject of so many iconic songs, but they’ve also preserved the culture by bringing music into the home, sharing songs with their children and singing during household work. Female artist Melissa Bonin has created the commemorative poster, T-shirt and pin this year to depict the domestic songbirds. A symposium, “Les femmes et les filles: Female Perspectives in Cajun and Creole Culture,” will be held Friday from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at the Hilliard University Art Museum to discuss women’s instrumental role in Louisiana’s music as well as the 90th anniversary of the recording of “Jolie Blonde,” known today as the Cajun national anthem.

The Music For three days, enjoy a free ticket to some of the best Cajun and Creole musicians on five stages. (Full schedule is below.) The down-home, upbeat tempo of the accordion, washboard, fiddle, triangle, guitar, and drums inspires festival-goers to get up and dance the two-step! Look for more female-led acts this year, as well as longtime legends, GRAMMY-nominated and award-winning musicians, and up-and-coming artists who create fresh sounds while honoring long-time traditions.

Arts and Craft Show In the main event area, shop more than 50 artists and artisans from all over the state, sponsored by the Louisiana Crafts Guild. Find a souvenir you’ll cherish for years to come from a selection of handcrafted jewelry, fine art paintings, nature photography, wood and metal sculptures, and specialty items. Most vendors accept credit cards, or an ATM is located on-site.

The Food The festival is the premier spot to sample food from Lafayette’s most popular restaurants, all in one lively and convenient location. There is something for everyone as you go from tent to tent tasting creations from some two dozen vendors— crawfish enchiladas, boudin, cracklin’, alligator on a stick, po’boys, red beans and rice, crab cakes, shrimp, pralines and bread pudding. Cool off with an iced coffee, rolled ice cream or craft beer from locally-owned breweries. Another festival highlight is Culture Sur La Table, where you can sit down to watch culinary demonstrations from the area’s finest chefs. 8

For the Kids The festival is fun for all ages and is especially kidfriendly. Children can play on the playground and run through the grassy fields or splash pad while parents listen nearby to the great line-up of bands. The Children’s Museum of Acadiana invites all the little folks to La Place des Petits, a special event area on Saturday and Sunday with children’s games and crafts. Children will also enjoy some of the special food just for them, like famous Louisiana snoballs, beignets and more!

Tips & What to Bring While the festival is free, you’ll want some cash to spend at the various vendors. Girard Park is located at 500 Girard Park Blvd., adjacent to the University of Louisiana and The Oil Center, where you’ll find paid parking. Festivalsacadiens.com/info/map-parking Uber and Lyft are also a great choice and are readily available in Lafayette. October can still be warm in South Louisiana, so dress accordingly and wear comfortable shoes for walking and dancing. Folding chairs and blankets are nice to have near the stages, and wet wipes come in handy before and after meals or when using the port-o-lets. No ice chests or pets are allowed. Bring your camera and be sure you tag

@lafayettetravel.

Lagniappe

Enjoy these festival extras! Tour des Atakapas: Run, Paddle, Run Duathlon 2019 - Walk, run or paddle off all those festival calories in the Tour des Atakapas race. On Saturday, participate in the 3, 5 and 8-mile race options as well as the Run-Paddle-Run Duathlon. Kayaks are available for rent, and tandem teams are permitted. For more information visit LATRAIL.org. After the festival each night, join the after-party at Blue Moon Saloon, downtown’s favorite honky-tonk for more amazing music. (215 E. Convent St.)

Annual Boudin & Bacon Cook-Off Held Oct. 19

Acadiana’s super sausage is celebrated Saturday, Oct. 19 during the annual Boudin Cook-off in downtown Lafayette’s Parc Sans Souci. South Louisiana’s version of Octoberfest includes local beer, authentic boudin, Cajun music, and dancing.

Early residents to South Louisiana didn’t live high on the hog. They used the resources that were available to them: bountiful rice fields and plenty of pork, down to the last scrap. They say necessity is the mother of invention, and the Cajuns’ creativity led to one of Acadiana’s favorite foods: Boudin. Unlike other sausages or the French boudin blanc, traditional Cajun boudin is a combination of pork sausage blended with rice and spices and stuffed into a natural casing. The idea for an annual celebration came from University of Louisiana history professor and food writer Bob Carriker, also known as the “Godfather of Boudin.”

“This is a truly unique opportunity to sample the best of the best from throughout the region in one place,” says Carriker. “We always encourage visitors to try boudin when they travel here. Every boudin is a little different, with recipes varying from family to family, so the festival allows everyone to sample each kind and pick their favorite. It’s really a foodie paradise.” This year, the festival is bringing a bacon cook-off to the table—because, what doesn’t taste better with bacon?

“There is a real trend right now in artisanal bacon,” says Carriker. “A lot more people are making craft bacon and getting really creative with their recipes.” The fun begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday with live music from The Specklers, Alligator Blue, and The Babineaux Sisters as well as special activities throughout the day. Festival admission is free, and attendees can purchase tickets to sample bacon and boudin prepared by both amateur and professional chefs around the state. Attendees can cast their vote for the best boudin and bacon until 3:30 p.m. and the winner will be crowned at 4 p.m. Those really wanting to pig out can participate in the fried boudin ball eating contest or the bacon-eating contest. Plenty of locally brewed beer will also be on hand to wash down all the boudin and bacon goodness. The event is fun for all ages. Children can enjoy free fun jumps and face painting as well as free ice-cream sandwiches and other activities throughout the day. PHOTOS BY: BOUDIN COOK-OFF, BOB CARRIKER

Parc Sans Souci is located at 201 E. Vermilion St., with an adjacent parking garage. For a full schedule of events, visit LafayetteTravel.com/BoudinCookOff. Not in town for the festival? You can get your fill of all things boudin on our Cajun Country Boudin Trail by visiting LafayetteTravel.com/Cajun-Boudin-Trail.

Blackpot Festival & Cookoff Oct. 25-26

The last weekend in October, locals, and visitors can step back in time to experience what life was like on the bayou centuries ago. One of Louisiana’s most unique events, the Blackpot Festival & Cookoff celebrates the area’s rich history and culture through food and music. The festival is held at Vermilionville, the perfect outdoor kitchen for old-fashioned blackpot cooking. The 23-acre heritage park rests along the Bayou Vermilion and includes 19 attractions, including seven restored original homes, a schoolhouse, chapel, and performance center as well as costumed artisans who provide historical demonstrations. Glenn Fields, a local musician, runs the Blackpot Festival & Cookoff every year through his organization Louisiana Folk Roots to foster the state’s vibrant and venerable living traditions.

“Our mission is to preserve and present the music, food, dance, language, and art of Acadiana,” Fields says. “The blackpot, or as some call a Dutch oven, was used in households for everything from cooking to doing laundry. Many Acadians still use a blackpot today, and it’s a great way to serve a lot of people.” Blackpot cooking was an essential way communities shared food, explains Fields. When a farmer slaughtered a hog, he’d divide up each part of the pig for people to make a particular dish in what was called a boucherie. South Louisiana has carried on this communal tradition, where you’ll find big pots of jambalaya or gumbo simmering wherever there’s a large gathering of people, whether a party, football tailgate or hunting camp. During the weekend, dozens of teams will compete in the annual blackpot cook-off in categories including best gravy or sauce, gumbo, cracklin,’ jambalaya and dessert. Festival-goers will have the chance to sample culinary delights from dozens of blackpots as well as purchase beer from local brewers. In addition, some of the state’s best musicians will perform on four stages throughout the park. Highlights this year include performances by the Daiquiri Queens, Preston Frank, Los Texmaniacs, Yvette Landry, Little Freddie King, Sheryl Cormier, and Pine Leaf Boys. Other stages will be dedicated to singer-songwriters and workshops. For a full schedule, visit LafayetteTravel.com/Blackpot-Festival. The festival also includes an accordion contest, square dancing, and a campout next door to Vermilionville in the nearby baseball park.

“Hundreds of folks camp overnight, cook over an open fire and play music together,” says Fields. “It’s really lively and a lot of fun.”

A weekend pass is $60 including food samples and music at the event as well as the campout Friday and Saturday. Vermilionville Historic Village is located at 300 Fisher Road.

Acadiana has been a melting pot of cultures since the area was first settled in the 1700s. The Spanish Trail ran straight through the area, linking Louisiana and Texas to Mexico and facilitating trade among French and Spanish immigrants and Native Americans. When the French-Acadians were kicked out of Canada by the British crown, Spain accepted them into their South Louisiana territory. “Many people associate the French with South Louisiana, but it was the Spanish Catholics who helped the Acadians seek refuge,” says Manuel Peña, director of the Latin Music Festival. “Look closely around the state, and you’ll see evidence of Spanish territory by the names of towns and streets.” Luis Mora founded the festival 17 years ago to help educate the public and fellow Hispanics about the heritage of Latin culture in Lafayette. His goal was to bring in arts and crafts from different Latin American countries, a variety of music and local Latin cuisine. Nearly two decades later, the event is still going strong. Festivalgoers can purchase food from various restaurants like Patacon for Venezuelan cuisine and La Carreta for Mexican fare as well as local vendors offering everything from hot tamales and Belizean spices to churros and Argentinean sweets. Burn off the calories at a Mega Zumba Class at 10 a.m. or a Latin dance class at 2:30 p.m. Students enrolled in the Spanish language immersion programs at Opelousas High School, Alice Boucher and Charles Burke will be performing during the day. Children can also enjoy special activities including bounce houses, a mechanical bull, arts and crafts, face painting, and a flag parade. When the sun goes down, attendees can dance the night away with a full line-up of Latin bands and DJs going late into the evening.

The festival will be held on Saturday, October 5 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Parc International at 200 Garfield St. For more information visit LafayetteTravel.com/LatinMusicFestival. PHOTOS BY: LATIN MUSIC FESTIVAL - FB.COM/LATINOACADIANA
