MURGE

When we talk about the Murgia in the plural we really mean a variety of landscapes which are quite different from each other, sloping gently down from the mountain ridge between Apulia and Basilicata towards the Adriatic coast. In the same way there are a lot of different possible itineraries in this area, but they are all equally interesting. We can see hilly pastures with prominent rocks and deep limestone valleys, dense woodlands and fertile plains, sandy coasts and high rocky cliffs above the sea. The Upper Murgia area is very much “dominated” by man, but still has some rather wild corners which visitors find fascinating. Thanks to expert use of a rich variety of spontaneous vegetation, visitors find simple but tasty foods: thistles,

cardoncelli mushrooms, fennel, ferula and lampascione red onions are accompanied by fresh pasta, pulses and meats in a long list of dishes which also belong to the peasant life of the past. Frederick II of Swabia’s imposing Castel del Monte is a big tourist attraction, and dominates vast expanses of olive trees and vineyards which produce excellent extra virgin oils and wines. Nero di Troia is wild and hardy like the land it grows on and is the undisputed “king” of the area, the inspiration for the three Castel del Monte doc wines, Rosso Canosa and Rosso di Barletta. The international vines and the other indigenous varieties – Bombino Bianco, Bombino Nero, Pampanuto, with Aleatico and Aglianico borrowed from nearby Basilicata – all enhance the wine

scene here, making it one of the most important wine production areas of Apulia. Still in the hinterland, some examples of incredible natural architecture are the caves at Gravina in Puglia, real canyons carved out by the action of water. Here the wine scene swings towards the whites of the Gravina doc, fresh and perfumed, made from Malvasia del Chianti, Greco and Bianco d’Alessano. This is only a brief aside, because if we move on to Gioia del Colle on the edge of the Murgia limestone plateau, the vineyards are again dominated by red grapevines. Here we find ourselves in the terroir of Primitivo, a strong and spirited vine discovered right here in the 18th century, which now has the doc largest production area in Apulia. Gioia del Colle and Andria also have a very deep-rooted cheese-making tradition and produce a vast range of fresh cheeses like mozzarella, burrata and stracciatella. Then there is the Adriatic with its variety of coastlines and fish, widely used in local gastronomy: fish soups, roast fish, baked fish, stewed fish, fish all’acquapazza and fish carpaccio. A special mention goes to the Bari tradition of eating raw seafood – a real passion. And it is right on the sea shore, on the sandy coast near Trani, that Moscato di Trani is grown. This indigenous local vine provides sweet and syrupy doc wines with an intense amber-yellow colour, which go perfectly with a classic Apulian pastry: almond sweets.

Azienda Agricola Conte Spagnoletti Zeuli

Count Onofrio Spagnoletti Zeuli’s love of the land has its origins in the past. The archives of his House contain documents which show that this aristocratic family was active from the beginning of the 18th century in transforming the wooded Murgia into flourishing farmland. Nowadays the Zagaria and San Domenico estates are very beautiful and are ideal locations for growing varieties like Bombino Nero, Montepulciano and Nero di Troia. This is a place worth exploring, not only for the quality of the wines, but also for the welcome the Count extends to his guests, and for the picturesque atmosphere of the antique underground olive oil press and the modern winery. There is a beautiful room for wine tasting; in the past this was the dormitory for the farm workers and has two antique fireplaces. 70031 Andria (Bt) Tenuta San Domenico SP 231 km 60 Tel. +39 0883 569511 Fax +39 0883 569560 c.szo@contespagnolettizeuli.it www.contespagnolettizeuli.it Year founded: 1600 Owner: Onofrio Spagnoletti Zeuli Oenologist: Leonardo Pinto Vineyard area (hectares): 150 Annual number of bottles: 400.000

Among the varieties bottled by the winery we find Moscato di Trani, also as spumante, Aleatico, Trebbiano, Sangiovese and others which are typical of the northern part of Bari Province. Visitors can take a guided tour of the winery and production plants and buy its wines here.

Fragrances of apricot and almond with some hints of hydrocarbons. A very good balance of flavour and alcohol content. Medium-bodied and averagely persistent, with a slightly bitterish finish. Suggested with purée of fava beans.

The Angiuli family has been working the land for three generations, always with a special interest in winegrowing. The winery was founded in 1880, and it was decided then to use only Primitivo grapes, from vines grown only in the traditional Apulian way as bushes; this limits their yield and favours grape quality. Vito and Giuseppe now work alongside their father Donato in the daily task of enhancing the local vines, well adapted to the soils of the Vale of Bari and its particular microclimate. The winery offers guided tours and sells its products to visitors.

Botromagno Vigneti e Cantine

In 1991 the local cooperative winery merged with the D’Agostino family and produced the Cantine Botromagno. The winery inherited one of the oldest and best known Apulian doc wines, Gravina, of which it is the exclusive producer. Brothers Beniamino and Alberto D’Agostino aim to achieve the highest standards of quality with their wines by exploiting the optimal microclimate of the Murgia. There have been considerable investments in technology and a modern eco-friendly cellar was built in 2005, giving a positive contribution to the whole range of wines which also includes reds made from local varieties like Aglianico and Primitivo. Colli della Murgia Erbaceo Puglia Bianco igt 2008 Grapes: Fiano Minutolo 50%, Greco 50% Alcohol: 13% Cost: euro 8,00 Pale consistent straw yellow hue. Intense on the nose, with scents recalling wild flowers, olive leaves, litchis, linden flowers and unripe almonds. Quite intense, has a fairly good structure and balance. Not very persistent, has a good correspondence of aroma and taste. The citrus fruit finish is very pleasant. To accompany a sea food risotto.

The partnership of Francesco Ventricelli and Francesco Dibenedetto led to the foundation of Colli della Murgia in 1986, in a farmstead near Castellaneta. From the first trials in organic agriculture they have promoted an eco-friendly style of wine-growing, and brought the certified quality of their own grapes to the attention of the market. In 2000 there was an important development in the shape of a move to Gravina in Puglia and the construction of a new winery building in stone and volcanic rock. A visit here is particularly interesting because the building has three storeys: a winemaking floor, a floor where wines mature in precious oak barrels, and a floor for wine-tasting where visitors can also enjoy the lovely view. 70024 Gravina in Puglia (Ba) Contrada Zingariello Tel./Fax +39 080 3261271 info@collidellamurgia.it www.collidellamurgia.it Year founded: 1986 Owner: Francesco Ventricelli, Francesco Dibenedetto Vineyard area (hectares): 22 Annual number of bottles: 170.000

Barsento Il Paturno Puglia Rosso igt 2007 Grapes: Primitivo 80%, Montepulciano 20% Alcohol: 13,50% Cost: euro 12,00 Intense consistent impenetrable ruby red hue. A lot of majestic scents of plums, black cumin, ink, coffee, rosemary and vanilla. Very balanced with elegant tannins and persistent echoes of cloves and red fruits. Has a generous structure which suggests serving with roast kid and lampascioni.

Barsento was founded in the late 1970s in the heart of the southern Murgia, on the borders between the provinces of Bari, Taranto and Brindisi. After lengthy renovation work of the buildings, production started up again with the 2000 grape harvest. Moderate use is made here of barriques, vines are grown using a mixture of bushes and trellises, harvesting is done by hand, and the yield per hectare is quite low. All of this means that the original characteristics of the local Apulian varieties are exalted. The winery is managed by Pietro Colucci, and visitors will find plenty of interest, including the two large rooms used for aging and maturation, both cut into the limestone bedrock, where the wines rest in ideal conditions. 70015 Noci (Ba) Contrada San Giacomo nc Tel. +39 080 4979657 Fax +39 080 4976126 info@cantinebarsento.it www.cantinebarsento.it Year founded: 1980 Owner: Pietro Colucci Oenologist: Leonardo Palumbo Vineyard area (hectares): 50 Annual number of bottles: 90.000
