BASILICATA

PRESENTATION On.le Vincenzo Viti (Italian MP) Agriculture Secretary SREM –Basilicata Region

Basilicata is a small and prosperous region in the south of Italy whose typical, traditional products have been appreciated for a long time in other areas of Italy and abroad, so that the region is identified as a centre of excellence. It lies in what was once “Magna Graecia” between the Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas, with an area of about 10 thousand sq. kilometres and a population of almost 600 hundred thousand people. The landscape is mainly mountainous and hilly with very fertile plains. Basilicata has a natural uncontaminated landscape with a very low population density. Agriculture is a tradition dating back centuries. Metaponto is the perfect example; it lies on the Ionian Sea below the Greek temples where the great philosopher Pythagoras taught, and already in the 4th century B.C. it was known for the quality of its dessert and wine grapes, as well as for its olives, cereals and pulses. It was here that the hard-working inhabitants established the first organised livestock farms. The natural, tasty, healthy and authentic products of today derive precisely from this traditional expertise. When it comes to wines, “Doc Matera” is produced nowadays in Matera, the city of the “Sassi”, capital of peasant life and Unesco World Heritage Site, while on Mount Vulture among the picturesque lake-filled craters is produced the famous Aglianico Doc, highly praised by Horace

and considered by wine experts to be one of the world’s best wines. The Agri Valley has an extraordinary micro-climate and terroir producing the “Terre Alta Val D’Agri” and “Grottino di Roccanova” doc wines. Then there are also the fine igt wines produced across the whole of Basilicata. Our agro-food products, the Mediterranean diet, our land, history, folklore and natural beauty spots make up a whole way of life - to taste and to experience. Basilicata has a great deal of potential for both its red and white wines, and is therefore proceeding to re-qualify the wine sector, which includes an increase in organic wines. The wine growing sector is considered to be of vital importance for all the other agro-food products and for gastronomy. This is why the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is carrying out cohesive policies aimed at achieving market positions and shares. Finally, it must be said that this innovative context involving the commitment of the Authorities will also include the creation of a Regional Wine Showcase based in the Vulture area, and with two branches: one near Matera and the other in the Agri Valley. The Wine Showcase will need to concentrate on valorisation and promotion of the quality wines produced in the Region by collaborating with local public and/or private organisations. It will promote the heritage of expertise in the wine sector, involving the production and dissemination of informational and published materials. Promotion will need to aim at improving the quality of Basilicata wines and encouraging synergies between wine production and the other typical agrofood products of the Region. It will also need to encourage interaction between the wine-growers and those involved in retail. The Wine Showcase will become vital for participation in wideranging national projects and will be the fulcrum for future development of the Regional wine and grape sector as part of wider promotion of the Basilicata agro-food sector. The Wine Showcase will be part of a larger plan to valorise the Region and will have the task of promoting wine culture and of achieving the potential of the area and of its other typical and traditional products.

BASILICATA GRAPES

WHITE GRAPES BOMBINO BIANCO Bombino Bianco is a variety widely used in dry white wines and also vinified when dried on the vine or harvested late. It is very widespread in Apulia and also present in many of the igt wines of Basilicata.

CHARDONNAY This is an imported vine, and is widely used in every region of Italy including Basilicata, where the soils and climate provide a very favourable environment for this variety.

FIANO This variety originated in nearby Campania, and has found such an ideal habitat in Basilicata that it is now part of many white igt labels.

MALVASIA BIANCA DI BASILICATA Matera Bianco is one of the six typologies of Matera doc, and uses from 70-90% of Malvasia Bianca di Basilicata, a local indigenous white grape variety. Malvasia is used together with Greco, in quantities ranging from 10 to 30% in Matera Bianco and in sparkling wine, and from 85 to 100% in Matera Greco. MOSCATO BIANCO This is a variety almost entirely used for sparkling wine. It grows in the Mount Vulture area and is used for a wine known as Moscato del Vulture.

RED GRAPES AGLIANICO These red grapes are used to make the most famous Basilicata doc wine: Aglianico del Vulture. The hills around the volcano, which include various towns in the Province of Potenza, are the ideal habitat for this vine which is said to date back to ancient Greek times.

ALEATICO This vine is used to produce a typical dessert wine which lends itself to contemplation. The vine is mostly found in the areas around Rionero in Vulture, Barile, Melfi, Maschito, Acerenza, Banzi and other towns in the Province of Potenza. BOMBINO NERO Known as “Bambino” or as “Buonvino” this is a vine which produces an abundance of fruits and grape must.

MALVASIA NERA DI BASILICATA Malvasia Nera di Basilicata is a sub-variety and seems to have been imported from nearby Apulia. It has a lot of features in common with the Malvasia Nera di Brindisi variety which is very widespread in the Salento area. MERLOT The area in the Province of Potenza which includes Viggiano, Grumento Nova and Moliterno is the production area of Terre dell’Alta Val d’Agri doc. The distinguishing feature of this denomination is the international Merlot variety, which can be used – according to the various regulations – together with Cabernet Sauvignon, and for the rosé version with a very small amount of Malvasia di Basilicata. MONTEPULCIANO This was not originally a local variety in Basilicata, but it has found an excellent terroir here and is used in many igt wines.

PRIMITIVO Primitivo is a very widespread vine variety in Basilicata, especially in the area stretching from the Province of Matera to the border with Apulia. It is a leading component in Matera doc, the most recent denomination from Basilicata, where it is used in percentages ranging from 10 to 30% in Matera Rosso doc, and from 90 to 100% in Primitivo Matera doc.

SASSI AND VULTURE

Varied and unspoilt, the countryside of Basilicata is an exciting succession of woodlands, caves, valleys and old towns which seem to be a very part of the underlying rock. This has been an excellent human habitat for thousands of years, thanks also to the benign influence of Mount Vulture. The volcanic sediments of the massif, along with clayey rocks mixed in with sand and gravel, and the marine and river sediments of the valley floors have made the slopes of this extinct volcano extremely fertile. The Aglianico vine has found ideal conditions for growth and produces wines which are rightly considered some of the best reds in Italy. Aglianico wine has an impenetrable red colour, a great structure and ages very well.

It is the perfect accompaniment to the local cuisine, which includes all the typical features of the regions of southern Italy. This cuisine has so many types of homemade pasta; every area boasts its own different shape of pasta, and even the basic dough varies widely. Sauces for pasta range from a simple tomato sauce using tomatoes threaded on string to rag첫 lucano which uses three kinds of meat: pork, lamb and kid, with tomato sauce. Basilicata has a thousand-year tradition of sausage-making. In many regions sausage is called luganega from Lucania, the old name for Basilicata. Cheeses are traditional in Campania, Apulia and Calabria, and are also a must on tables in Basilicata homes and restaurants.

272

SASSI AND VULTURE

These are mostly made using a mixture of milks (sheep and goat) according to traditional methods. Other typical foods in Basilicata are the pulses, mushrooms, chestnuts and truffles which inspire every kind of culinary delight. Finally, there are the traditional sweets. These include Sanguinaccio (pigs’ blood, chocolate, grapes, lemon and sugar), Lagana Chiappata (lasagne made with cooked grape juice, walnuts, bread and quince) and Catoncelli (chickpea purée with cocoa). Traditional bread also deserves a mention here, with Pane di Matera being the height of this ancient art. Matera is also known for its Sassi, an old city in the walls of a gorge, which is now protected as an UNESCO World Heritage Site and was still inhabited until a few decades ago. Matera is also the name of the doc wine created in 2005 to valorise the very varied wine scene of this area which uses the Aglianico, Sangiovese, Primitivo, Greco and Malvasia di Basilicata grape varieties. The Basilicata wine scene is completed by going south: following the course of the River Agri upstream, the visitor arrives in the Agri Valley. This is where Terre dell’Alta Val d’Agri doc was created in 2003, expanding the range of wines made in this region by using the so-called international varieties like Merlot and Cabernet.

Azienda Agricola Basilisco Basilisco Aglianico del Vulture doc 2006 Grapes: Aglianico 100% Alcohol: 14% Cost: euro 30,00 Intense garnet red colour. Scents recall woodland plants, ripe plums and vanilla, with some brackish notes. Good structure, fairly balanced and intense on the palate. Not a very persistent finish, but elegant with echoes of vanilla. Ideal with roast lamb.

The mythical basilisk is the symbol of power and duration of this family, a sign of its noble origins, and it also encapsulates the history of this area. In 1992 Nunzia Calabrese gave this name to her farm, set in a hilly landscape of great beauty on the slopes of Mount Vulture. The vineyards lie on a volcanic terrain which slopes gently down from 450 to 300 metres above sea level. The dominant variety is Aglianico, which enjoys a particularly good position here. The charming 15th century winery building cut into the volcanic rock is where the grapes are converted into wine and matured in oak barrels at a naturally regulated temperature, according to the local tradition.

Teodosio Aglianico del Vulture doc 2007 Grapes: Aglianico 100% Alcohol: 14% Cost: euro 15,00 Bright ruby red colouring with garnet highlights. Enchanting on the nose, with exciting memories of black mulberry jam, dried figs, vanilla, flint, ink, soot and truffle. Its weighty structure is wonderfully balanced: its rich velvety smoothness is softened by fine tannins and a strong flavour. Aroma and taste correspond closely to the vine and the finish is endless. Ideal with a roast leg of pork.

Paternoster

Since the beginning of the last century, the Paternoster family has been growing grapes in the Vulture area. The third generation is now in charge of this historic winery, following in the footsteps of grandfather Anselmo, who began bottling his own Aglianico in 1925. The winery uses organic methods and has launched a specific line called Villa Rotondo, underlining this environmental choice. This is also the name of the area where the new wine-making plant is situated, with an exceptionally beautiful view over the entire valley. Wines are aged in the cellars in the town, in the darkness and the natural fresh temperature maintained by the volcanic rock.

Carbone

Luca and Sara Carbone grew up alongside the vineyards and breathed in the family passion for wine. In 2005, they began to make wine again, after a temporary suspension of business in order to plant 8 hectares of new vineyards and build a new winemaking plant. Their ambitious project also included renovation of an old wine cellar in the old town of Melfi, where there is a shop and a sampling area for wine tourists. The wines mature underground at temperature and humidity levels which are naturally constant. The volcanic rock walls clearly show the layers deposited by successive volcanic eruptions.

Casa Vinicola D’Angelo lies in the classic area of Aglianico del Vulture production and can be considered one of the historical wineries of this region. It was established eighty years ago and is now headed by Donato D’Angelo - the third generation of his family - who is always very concerned with improving the quality of his wines by following every stage of the production cycle. The particular terrain and climatic conditions of this area, the position of the vineyards on the hills, cold winters and mild summers with substantial variations in temperature are all factors which reinforce the structure, complexity and intensity of the Aglianico bouquet. Eleano

Azienda Eleano is divided between the towns of Rionero and Ripacandida, in an excellent wine-growing area. The new winery building was finished recently, and for Francesca Grieco and Alfredo Cordisco represents the culmination of a project started in 2001 with the establishment of this small but significant winery. They follow all the stages of production very closely and rely on a well-known oenologist to ensure high quality. The winery building is where the entire production cycle takes place. The winery has a large area of vineyards in the countryside near Barile, planted over 40 years ago by small farmers on these volcanic soils and now organically cultivated. The new winery building is entirely underground at a depth of about 25 metres and lies in an excellent agricultural land near Rionero, on the road to the Monticchio lakes. The De Sio-Leone-Rabasco family owns the winery and produces refined, elegant wines using modern technology. Wines mature in cellars cut into the volcanic rock, in keeping with tradition. It is possible to visit the winery and buy its wines.

The Sasso family has a long tradition of wine-growing dating back to 1925. The main objective is to optimise the quality of the wines from the existent organic vineyards on the Pian di Carro estate at Barile and the Celentino estate near Ripacandida. Owner Eugenia Sasso has managed to put her ideas into practice in a relatively short time, concretising the passion inherited from her winegrower grandfather and oenologist father. It is possible to visit the atmospheric winery building and to buy wines directly.
