LAUREN ANN HANSON

hello!

I’m Lauren. I am an avid traveler, snowboarder, cheese enthusiast, and lover of Colorado from the Midwest. When I’m not designing, I’m hiding behind a camera. My goal? To learn just a tiny piece of how the beauty surrounding us and what we’ve created can inspire my designs. 630.853.8109 // lahanson@upenn.edu

re:cluster museum addition

Graduate // University of Pennsylvania Foundations Studio // Danielle Willems The addition to the Penn Museum encompasses a new era of museums. This addition challenges the stereotypical floor plan by creating a circulative circulation that deconstructs a traditional museum layout. Drawing inspiration from the Guggenheim and Pompidou, the museum itself becomes a wandering ramp filled with various discoveries while traveling along the ramped circulation. The various programs are broken up sporadically throughout the building, allowing visitors to discover the entire process of a museum. While museums traditionally have their programs separated out into wings, this addition challenges that by creating clusters that host all the necessary programs

design build installation at penn museum

Graduate // University of Pennsylvania Foundations Studio // Danielle Willems team: meera toolsidas, shan li, eric fries, and lauren hanson Given four cultural artifacts from the Penn Museum’s collection, the project explores strategies for viewing the objects. The final design derives its original form from an abstracted version of the site boundary, and several subtractive actions are performed based on views of the cabinet & the artifacts. First, A planar void is created based on the sight line from the primary approach; next, a designed pattern is projected from the center to the exterior of a form, and sections of the mass are removed based on this projection.

pop-up rock climbing wall Graduate // University of Pennsylvania DigiBlast Studio // Danielle Willems + Ezio Blasetti Inspired by rock climbing on natural faces, Branch takes a mountainous approach to an urban setting. Inspired by the shape of antlers, it provides various levels of routes of all skill levels on a natural face - almost like you are climbing one of nature’s most impressive rock walls. The form arose from a process of photogrammetry and 3D scanning antlers.

food market for a new RiNo Undergraduate // University of Colorado Advanced Architecture Studio I // Jade Polizzi A glass box. Simple, yet impactful. A normal rock on the outside, but a geode on the inside — Industry is formed. Centralized and surrounded by the building, the glass box becomes the pearl of the space. The cooking school will cultivate market-goers’ curiosity due to its transparency, yet feel unreachable with very little access points. The glass boxes’ central location in the building makes it an important piece as all of the ingredients needed to cook are just steps away. The cooking school becomes the heart of the market, just as a kitchen is the heart of a home.

pastificio design-build pasta cart

Undergraduate // University of Colorado Advanced Architecture Studio I // Jade Polizzi Our midterm was to create a pasta cart for a local company, Pastificio. We worked in groups of three to design what we envisioned this transportable cart that would be used for catering, the farmers market, and be adaptable to any use that the company may need in the future. We presented our designs and after discussing the projects, the clients and our class decided on a cart that could logistically be built in one month. We separated into teams, sectioning the design into different components. I was in charge of the skin and the signage. I helped and led the construction of the facade and sign. In addition, I designed the signage and menu as well as created a video highlighting our time building the cart.

alvarez morris work experience

Alvarez Morris Architectural Studio // Denver, CO Architectural Intern // under Carlos Alvarez During my internship with Alvarez Morris, I worked on rendering our projects for clients, city meetings, and real estate listings. Featured are three projects that were my favorite. The one on this page and the Denver, CO one I was not a part of the design process and only completed red-lines, experimented in Revit with different ideas we brainstormed, and rendered. The Los Angeles project was a remodel that Carlos Alvarez, the principal architect, gave me the freedom to help redesign the backyard. After working with Carlos on what he wanted to see and developing a few iterations, the final design - featured in the renderings - was born.

transforming overlay ongoing studies

Graduate // University of Pennsylvania Spolia Reflux Studio // Brian DeLuna The neighborhood, Callowhill, has been going through an extreme amount of revitalizing change in the recent years. With the development of the Rail Park, the area is becoming more popular as developers are redeveloping old industrial buidlings into lofts (creating the “Loft District”). Everyone is jumping at the ability to transform buildings and lots within this district as it is becoming the new “up-and-coming” area. Although, this is causing the area to gentrify. In a recent analysis by RentCAFE, Callowhill’s zip code, 19123, was ranked the fourth most gentrified zip code in the nation. This project analyzes the relationships between identified gentrification zones based on Census data, rent price increases and decreases, and loss of vacant buildings in an attempt to develop an understanding of the complex subject of gentrification. I begin to hypothesize the relationship between the spread of industry and development with the influx of new residents and markets. There is no clear borderline to gentrification and urban revitalization with no clear path. The boundaries begin to blur, creating interesting shapes and figures seen in the following pages.
