Architecture is a story each one of us would experience and tell in a different way, a story that reflects our daily lives and our vision for a better future. That is why as an architect I want to write a story to share with others.

“We shape our buildings, thereafter they shape us.” Winston Churchill7
In the AA visiting school workshop, the task was to create a settlement on mars inspired from our visit to Petra and Wadi Rum. Using Rhino as a modeling tool we were able to generate our proposed site for the project and variant shell systems were tested, to create the most suitable layered experience that provides different zones and atmosphere for the residents of the designed settlement on Mars.

THE NEW LAYERS OF MARS

Conditions on Mars
Inspired by the layers of the sand, the carving in the stones and the protecting shells of the animals we want to create a balanced environment between what we have on earth and what we need on Mars, that’s why we are creating a layered environment systems that provide differently atmospheres for the inhabitants .

Concept 1- Canyons provide a safe environment on Mars> 2- Low gravity gives us the chance of building long span 3-domes.Domes create different zones with different levels of 4-protection.Thedomes can be more than just shells, but also have other functionsspan domes.
Form Development
In addition to making use of the canyons to partially protect the colony, a shell system was introduced and experimented with in order to create a cover from the top to protect the rest of it.
Site generating By using height maps from Mars we were able to generate the proposed site and model it on Rhino. The Site was chosen with 2 goals in mind: 1For it to be near one of the proposed landing sites by NASA. 2- The site needed to have a canyon to act as a shelter against the hard conditions on mars.
Developing and experimenting with the shells layout:

Shells Pattern Inspired by the stone patterns in wadi rum, a pattern was developed using grasshopper and rhino, then a couple of Prototypes were 3d printed in order to experiment with the effect of light on the perforated shells.

Tow glass domes were proposed to focus on main focal points in the site. 13

As the central station of the capital of NRW, Düsseldorf Hbf is a hectic place with great flow of people using it either on a daily basis or for the first time. But unfortunately the current station doesn’t live up to its potential, because it only works as a place where you can find trains in instead of a transportation hub. To that end, we believe that we need a project not just to activate the train station, but also to enhance the surrounding area, a place for activities, exhibitions, markets and business.

The first mass is directly connected to the platforms by escalators and lifts. The lifts are connecting the platforms with the rest of the building. Going to the first level there will be the market zone, which is a flexible public area where seasonal events are held.

Designed to be a destination for the local community, the park offers a multipurpose hall, cafeteria, outdoor theatre, playground, and shaded spaces. The stark angles of the building embraces the park creating a safe enclosure for visitors. The shell slopes and integrates itself with the hardscape creating a terraced space connected to the cafeteria. A constant visual and physical link is maintained between the interior and exterior spaces. Nature light floods the interior spaces whilst still being shaded from the harsh sun glare through the cantilevered slab edge. Cultural significance is represented through the park’s audio wall showcasing key Arabic engineering innovations.
The park was designed with cultural, ecological, sustainable, and historical impact in mind. It aims to evoke a sense of belonging, harmony, and unity through its vibrant spatial framework balancing ecological and human needs. Its modern composition intends to spark innovation whilst showcasing Arabic achievements through history.

Site Analysis: The park is located in Dheir Ghbar, Amman, Jordan. Surrounded by four streets, it is in a predominantly residential area.
25
The upper level of the building is the cafeteria and the administration. The level bellow has the multipurpose hall and public bathrooms. The roof of the bottom mass becames the outdoor terrace for the cafeteria and it can be accessed for the upper street, meanwhile the space in front the building will be used as an outdoor playing area.

4- Zoning:
1- Location:
26
2- Building placement: The building is placed facing the road with the highest car traffic. Due to the land topography, there will be 2 access points to the building; one from the road on the upper end and the main one from road on the lower end.
3-Shaping forces: The building form was shaped to face the southeast direction and was affected by the main flow of traffic in the area. This guided the design process and helped to create a form that embraces the outdoor activities.
6- Outdoor Activities: The project is surrounded by parking for the cars visiting. It has a walking path linking all the levels as well as a children play area. An exhibition wall facing the entrance and the main outdoor area showcasing Arabic achievements in the engineering field welcomes visitors to the park.
5- Structure: The building is topped with an RCWaffle slab that works as a shelter and shading device, with lenses in which light goes throw.
7- Sustainable design: Power Generating: Solar panels were installed for generating power. Water harvesting: the slopes of the shell of the build were used to collect water that was stored in underground water tanks to be used for aggregation. Shading: As the main glass facade of the building faces the southeast, it was pushed to the back to create a cantilever that works as a horizontal shading device.
8- Circulation: The main circulation core in the building with stairs and an elevator links the upper and lower levels. Outside is a staircase linking both levels in addition to the walking ramps. 27

PUZZLE BOX
In order to maintain my mental and physical health through a lockdown it was essential for me to create an ever-changing and flexible living unit that meets all my needs, and helps me through this pandemic. A space that can go from clean and empty to full and chaotic, from closed to open to the outside, all depending on my mood and the activity I’m doing.

With its large openings and stark contrast, this project embodies modern simplicity. The design is a direct reflection of the client’s lifestyle and includes large open spaces that transcend to the outdoor. The landscape acts as an extension of the villa with an elevation-wide opening connecting the living spaces with the outdoor sitting area, pool, and outdoor cinema. The first floor’s bedroom quarters float over the outdoor and include four bedrooms as well as two guest bedrooms on the roof. There are plenty of terraces and entertaining spaces for the family and their guests to enjoy.

The project embraces the challenge of creating harmony between an architectural intervention and nature. The two-story high villa melds itself into the sloping hills of Na’ur and is nestled within the scenery. Inside, the spaces flow and merge with each other opening to the grand view. The façade borrows elements from nature and explores its relationship with the surrounding. The pool and outdoor spaces, on a lower level from the house, appear to be floating in their context.
