Movenpick Resort Petra
Today drive south along the 5,000-year-old Kings´ Highway to Petra, stopping to explore some wondrous sites along the way. Tour the revered holy site of Mount Nebo, where Moses was buried. See the small Byzantine church built by early Christians, and now expanded into a vast complex. Next, visit the city of Madaba. View the Madaba Mosaic Map, an ancient map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land, covering the floor of the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George. The church was built in 1896 AD, over the remains of a much earlier 6th century Byzantine church. The mosaic panel enclosing the Map was originally around 1000 square feet, only about a quarter of which has been preserved. Late afternoon, arrive in the Red Rose City of Petra. It lies on the edges of the mountainous desert of the Wadi Araba, surrounded by towering hills of rust-colored sandstone. This ancient rose-red city was once the center of the ancient world’s spice and incense routes.
