From
Fur Trappers to Festival Fun: A Hunter's Legacy in Cameron Parish
The rhythmic lapping of waves against the shore, the salty tang of the air, and the distant cry of a bird - these are the sounds and sights that beckon hunters to the wild and untamed beauty of Cameron Parish. This coastal paradise offers a unique and unforgettable hunting experience.
As the Creole Nature Trail winds its way through the parish, it becomes a veritable avian highway during the fall and winter months. Millions of birds migrate through this region, drawn by the abundance of food and favorable conditions. For hunters, this means a smorgasbord of game, from snow geese and mallards to pintails and teal ducks.
The diversity of birds in Cameron Parish is what sets it apart. This is a place where hunters can truly experience the "grand slam" of waterfowl hunting. In addition to ducks and geese, there are also opportunities to hunt deer, dove, quail, rabbit, squirrel, and turkey. For those who prefer smaller game, trapping is also permitted for beaver, bobcat, coyote, gray fox, mink, muskrat, opossum, river otter, red fox, raccoon, and skunk.
While public hunting is available, many hunters choose to hire a local guide. These experienced professionals can arrange hunts in the marsh or in rice, soybean, or plowed fields, providing expert knowledge and equipment.
In addition to hunting, Cameron Parish is also a premier destination for anglers, especially during the fall and winter months. The coastal waters teem with prized catches, and for those looking to cast a line, red drum and large speckled trout are the highlights of the season. These fish thrive in the nutrient-rich estuaries and marshes, making for a
thrilling fishing experience whether you're a seasoned angler or a beginner. With such variety and abundance, Cameron Parish offers the perfect opportunity to combine both hunting and fishing into one unforgettable outdoor adventure.
Cameron Parish is also known for its rich tradition of fur trapping, an integral part of the region’s heritage. Trappers in the area can target a variety of animals, including beaver, bobcat, mink, and river otter. This sustainable practice has been passed down through generations, and today, it plays a vital role in wildlife management.
One of the highlights of the hunting season in Cameron Parish is the Louisiana Fur & Wildlife Festival. Held annually in downtown Cameron, this event celebrates the rich hunting and trapping heritage of the region. From duck and goose calling competitions to oyster shucking contests, there's something for everyone. The festival also features parades, live music, and delicious Cajun food. Mark your calendar for Jan. 10-11, 2025!
Whether you're a seasoned hunter or simply looking for a unique outdoor adventure, Cameron Parish offers something for everyone. With its abundant wildlife, stunning scenery, and friendly locals, it's a destination that will leave you with memories that will last a lifetime.

Start your day in downtown Sulphur with a fresh coffee or smoothie from The Village Coffeehouse. Enjoy fresh pastries like homemade cinnamon rolls or order a garlic cheddar biscuit sandwich.
9:00 a.m.
Make your way to Almosta Ranch and enjoy your Sunday surrounded by adorable animals you can pet, take a scenic hayride (weather permitting), or enjoy a whimsical barrel train ride. Top it off with a pony ride (reservations recommended) for unforgettable family memories.
12:00 p.m.
Head back to Lake Charles for lunch at The Terrace Restaurant at Lake Area Adventures. From juicy burgers to elevated flatbreads, award-winning chef Amanda Cusey has crafted a menu with options for all appetites, including children.
1:00 p.m.
Let the kids run free at Lake Area Adventures, where they can jump, climb, swim, and play games. The 35,000-square-foot family entertainment center offers a variety of adventures, and even the grown-ups can join in on the fun.
4:00 p.m.
Wrap up your 48 hours in Southwest Louisiana with a relaxing dinner at Luna Bar & Grill South. Savor the flavors and pack up those happy memories (until your next visit, of course!).
