Wine tasting

Naturally Intoxicating

Breathtaking and Deep The Lake Chelan Valley has it all: beautiful hills, a luscious, long lake, sun to bask in, fresh air, shopping, dining, music, four distinct seasons and wine. Really good wine.

Unique In geological terms, our soil is relatively young with volcanic pumice on top of a glacially aged scape. It’s the kind of soil vines love to struggle in under the blanket of hot summer days and cool summer nights. You can taste the efficiency of our winter, the quick thaw of spring, our intense summers and a gorgeous harvest in any glass of Chelan AVA wine.

Patience Winemaking is a lot easier with amazing grapes to work with and wine drinking is a lot more memorable when everything around you is beautiful. Even so, we’ve taken our time to tend to our vines and the reward has been award winning. That’s why wine lovers have made the easy jaunt over the hills to return to us summer, winter, spring and harvest. Travel to the Lake Chelan Wine Valley and discover nearly twenty boutique wineries nestled amongst the rolling hills that cradle the sparkling clear waters of Lake Chelan — each one offering quality wines reflective of the distinctive personality of their grapes and their winemaker. It’s easy to taste in the wines that are produced here. This is a contagious place. On your next visit, pause a moment to look around and take in the beauty of the Lake Chelan Wine Valley – it’s naturally intoxicating.

There are many special events held at individual wineries throughout the year! Visit www.LakeChelan.com or call 800-4CHELAN to start planning your visit. 10

Annual Wine Events

Information about activities planned at each winery can be found at www.LakeChelanWineValley.com Chelan Nouveau / April 20-21 & 27-28, 2013

Right on the shore of the most beautiful lake in the world

The vines wake up in April and the brilliant whites and delightful pinks we bottled a few months ago are now ready to taste. This is the weekend for white and rose lovers and we take great joy in seeing you relish your first taste of what will be your favorite summer sippers.

Spring Barrel Tasting / May 18-19, 2013 Like eating cherries from the tree or bread just out of the oven, Barrel Tasting weekend offers the ability to enjoy a taste of something right from the source. It’s also your first opportunity to taste our next great release.

LAKE CHELAN Crush / Oct 5-6 & 12-13, 2013 October in the Lake Chelan Wine Valley is gorgeous with brilliant sun, spectacular color and the smell of freshly fallen leaves. Join us in back-to-back weekends as we celebrate our annual Crush Festival. The barrel room doors swing wide open and the work in the vineyards comes to the crush pad. Come taste, stomp and dance. Watch the grapes tumble through the press and taste the raw juice that it produces. Get the inside scoop from the cellar master or wine maker on how the wine will taste come bottling time. Sit down with us at the table for a harvest party or a winemaker dinner and share in the experience of harvest season.

Fall Barrel Tasting / Nov 29 - Dec 1, 2013 A weekend that has it all: great views, long conversations at the tasting counter, the smell of oak barrels wet with wine and wood smoke in the morning air. There’s a little bit of breathing room everywhere you go and everyone you meet has relaxed into post-harvest glee. Taste warming reds right from the barrel and linger over a sample of what could be a double-gold winner at future wine competitions.

Red Wine & Chocolate / Feb 8-9 & 15-16, 2014 For two weekends in February, the Lake Chelan Wine Valley hums with couples on romantic retreats and friends gather for a much needed winter getaway. Our tasting rooms fill with smiling faces and the sound of surprised delight at each taste of red wine and chocolate. 1-800-4CHELAN

Welcome to the Lake Chelan Wine Valley, the most naturally intoxicating wine destination in the Northwest. Our vintages are deep and complex, like the cobalt depths outside our wineries’ steps. The glacially carved soil gives our grapes unique character. Our lake’s depths literally change the seasons here, stretching them out, drawing out late-summer sugars long after others are off the vine. Some say our most precious resources are the world-class winemakers drawn to these conditions, turning nature’s gifts into the magic in your glass. Engaging and accessible, chances are you’ll talk to more than one on your next wine adventure here. One taste and we know you’ll agree: Lake Chelan Wine Valley is naturally intoxicating.

Chelan Valley Farmers Market At the Chelan Evening Farmer’s market you’ll find the expected: tomatoes, peppers, herbs, plums, peaches, cherries, apples; the unexpected: hummus, goat cheese, lavender and other flowers; and the unusual: gooseberries, currants and wool. One of the many special aspects of shopping at farmers’ markets includes getting to know the farmers and vendors who work so hard to bring their beautiful offerings to market. Farmer-focused for sure, but also so much more … Entertainment is offered at the market, including story time and activity table for children and music for everyone. A barn owl visits regularly, held by Debbie Barnett, Chelan’s own “bird-lady” to inspire and educate visitors. Nearby restaurants create fresh sheets out of the items vendors bring for the evening. Enjoy the entertainment – picnic on prepared food or fresh fruits and vegetables. Enjoy Chelan Evening Farmers Market at beautiful Riverwalk Park, each Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. during the summer. www.ChelanFarmersMarket.org. Agricultural Tourism The many roadside fruits stands in and around the Lake Chelan Valley are great places to purchase fruit and vegetables fresh from the fields and orchards. Other businesses themed around local agriculture include restaurants, wine tasting rooms, and many products such as jams, jellies, baked goods, fruit desserts and smoothies, plus a wide selection of gift items. As early as April the pear trees begin to bloom, followed by apples and then a host of other tree fruits. Harvest begins with cherries in June, and continues through October with several of the late apple varieties. In season fresh fruits found in the valley also include apricots, blueberries, peaches, nectarines, plums and of course, wine grapes. STEHEKIN

& UPPER LAKE

Where no roads can take you A trip to the head of Lake Chelan is a journey into an unspoiled frontier, forgotten by time. Nestled in one of the deepest gorges in North America, Lake Chelan is one of Washington’s largest bodies of fresh water. No roads lead to Stehekin, so the only way to arrive here is by charter or personal boat, seaplane or small personal aircraft, or on a Lady of the Lake passenger ferry. Hiking on foot or horseback is another option for getting to Stehekin. Every summer several hundred people hike to Stehekin using an extensive trail network much of which has

22

Lake Chelan Visitors Guide 2013/2014

been in place for 100 years. About 150 of those hikers have made it all the way from Mexico on the Pacific Crest Trail. The Lady of the Lake has been providing passenger ferry service on the Lake for over a century. About 5 miles from the landing, and walking distance from Harlequin Campground is a 3,000 foot grass airstrip, for experienced pilots. A favorite for campers, fishers and hunters, getting to Stehekin is as much fun as being there. www.lakechelan.com

Day tours If you can only stay for the day in Stehekin, there are several day tours available where you can ride a shuttle to the High Bridge area and hike, or visit Buckner Orchard, Rainbow Falls, the One-Room Schoolhouse, and other scenic points along the Stehekin Valley Road. You can also rent a bike and explore the lower valley at your own pace.

The National Park Service’s Golden West Visitor Center opened in 1927 as “the Golden West Lodge,” a resort hotel. Today, the Golden West welcomes you with information on all Stehekin activities including Park Service evening programs, naturalist talks and children’s activities. Ask for your free copy of the Self-Guided Walking/Biking Tour to Rainbow Falls. Backpackers can get camping permits, maps and information on trails and weather conditions. “A Wilderness Place” is an entertaining 10-minute video about Stehekin and the surrounding wilderness. Book lovers can browse the bookstore and the “Golden West Gallery” features art of the North Cascades. www.nps. gov/noca/planyourvisit/ stehekin.htm, (360) 854-7365 x 14

Historic Buckner orchards The property that now comprises the Buckner Orchard was homesteaded in 1889 by Bill Buzzard. After clearing about an acre of land, Mr. Buzzard built a log cabin, which is still standing today, and planted a large garden. He also cut many of the large trees on the homestead and sold them to mills down lake or as fuel for the steamers which supplied mines in the upper valley. Steamers required 6 to 12 cords of wood to make the round trip. In 1911, ownership changed hands to the Buckner family, who arrived in Stehekin with fairly elaborate plans to develop what they called Rainbow Ranch. Apples were their focus and the first thing needed was water. The hand-dug ditch still carries irrigation water to the orchard today. The Buckner Ranch and 90 acres of surrounding area are now listed as the Buckner Homestead National Historic District. The property was sold to the National Park Service in 1970 and they offer guided walks on weekends during the summer. Every year in October, Stehekin celebrates a Harvest Festival organized by the Buckner Homestead Heritage Foundation. In the fall, visitors and locals are encouraged to pick apples and make their own apple juice. The Harvest Festival will be held October 5th, 2013. www.BucknerHomestead.org

Trail opportunities The Stehekin Valley is in the heart of the North Cascades and is in the Lake Chelan National Recreation Area, part of the North Cascades National Park Service Complex. It is a major entryway into the mountains, providing access to some of the best hiking and backpacking in the world. Trails range from short one-mile hikes to major treks including the Pacific Crest Trail which extends from Canada to Mexico. Ask about trail listings from the Chelan Ranger Station in Chelan, or the Golden West Visitor Center at Stehekin Landing. Free backcountry permits are needed for overnight stays at all North Cascades National Park Service Complex camps and they are available at ranger stations on a first-come first-serve basis up to a day in advance. Boat-in camps do not require a backcountry permit, but do require a $5/day or $40/season (May 1 to October 1) Lake Chelan Federal Dock Site permit for boats. See page 33 for permit locations.

Rainbow falls

Raft the stehekin river

Up valley from Stehekin Landing is a beautiful 312-foot waterfall. Spring is the best time of year to see the falls. During the thaw from April to June the water flows like liquid thunder, misting its visitors. Winter visitors occasionally enjoy the crystal blue ice of a frozen waterfall.

The Stehekin River winds down from its Cascade Mountain tributaries to empty into the head of Lake Chelan. The last 11 miles are great for river rafting. The first half of the trip has the most whitewater, and the latter is a smooth, relaxing ride, meandering through the Stehekin Valley. Reservations required.

A new ADA accessible trail was built in 2011, and offers views for visitors in a wheelchair. A second viewpoint was also constructed at a location higher up the falls, and there is now a better experience for everyone visiting the falls. The bus used on the Rainbow Falls tour is ADA accessible as are all of the shuttle busses.

Lake Chelan is a 50.5-mile long lake, comprised of two unique basins divided by a shallow sill known as the “narrows.” The largest basin, the Lucerne, holds about 92% of the water in the northern three quarters. The smaller, Wapato Basin, is only 400 feet deep and 12 miles long. This is where the majority of the summer recreation takes place, closest to the communities of Chelan and Manson.

BOATING — bring your own or rent There are a couple year-round public boat launches, and several seasonal launches on Lake Chelan. Water ski & wakeboard One of the most popular recreation activities on the lake is being pulled behind a fast-moving boat on skis, a tube or a wakeboard. Often the best time for calm water is in the morning or late afternoon.

Scuba diving Lake Chelan’s upper basin, called the Lucerne Basin, is among the top three deepest gorges in the nation. A depth of 1,486 feet is reached in the area of the lake that is only one mile wide. When the lake is at “full pool” during the summer, the gorge dips 386 feet below sea level. Scuba divers come from far and wide to dive to great depths, and still enjoy the hot Lake Chelan weather. Don’t want to bring your gear? Rent it! Chelan Divers & Sporting Goods (509) 682-4466

BOATING SAFETY

Stand up paddle board

Please remember these important safety requirements: Always wear an approved flotation device. Please observe the boat and water use regulations for the City of Chelan and Chelan County. A brochure is available at the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center, or by calling the Chelan County Sheriff at (509) 663-9911.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) is the fastest growing watersport in the nation. It involves propelling a large surf-like board with a single paddle while balancing atop a body of water. Due to its versatility and ease of learning, Stand Up Paddle Boarding is sweeping the nation and has become the hippest way to explore all types of waterways.

Drivers of boats or personal watercraft must be at least 14 years of age, per Washington State regulations.

SUP is a family-friendly activity that all ages can participate in as it can be modified to be anything from an intense workout to a leisurely paddle around the lake. The unique perspective offered from standing above the water allows you to see water animals and plant life in a completely different manner.

State law requires boat operators to carry a Washington State Boater Education card when operating motorboats with 15 horsepower or greater (including personal watercraft or any motorized watercraft).

Don’t forget a boat permit Boaters who use federal docks on Lake Chelan will be required to display a “Lake Chelan Federal Dock Site Permit.” A daily permit costs $5.00 while a season pass costs $40.00. Ten dock sites managed by the U.S. Forest Service and five by the National Park Service require dock site permits. In addition to the 50.5mile long lake, you’ll find numerous smaller lakes and waterways nearby. The majestic Columbia River lies just four miles east, also providing plenty of opportunity to enjoy water-skiing, jet-skiing, parasailing, kayaking, canoeing, rowing, tubing, and cruising. You will also see windsurfers and sailboats, especially up lake in the Lucerne Basin and near Stehekin, where the winds are the most consistent.

Fishing

Here’s the catch

The Lake Chelan Valley has been known for its world-class fishing since the first settlers arrived in the late 1800’s. Each year, stocking programs release 100,000 Cutthroat and 500,000 Kokanee (landlocked Salmon) fingerlings in Lake Chelan. The Lake Chelan fishing season is open year round, but you must check with the Department of Fish and Wildlife pamphlet for license requirements and limits, available at area sporting or hardware stores.

The largest species of fish found in Lake Chelan are Chinook (King) Salmon and Lake Trout (Mackinaw). A typical catch ranges from 6 to 10 pounds, but it is not unusual to hook a 20 pounder. Washington State Fish & Wildlife (360) 902-2200 www.wdfw.wa.gov

Catch a state record On February 4, 2013, Phil Colyar of Wenatchee caught a 35-pound, 10-ounce state record lake trout in Lake Chelan. The previous official state record mackinaw also was caught in Lake Chelan — a 35-pound, 7-ounce fish caught in 2001. FISHING GUIDES & Services

Easy family walks Riverwalk Park Loop Trail Length 1 mile

This is a one-mile pathway that loops between the two bridges that span the Chelan River, in Historic Downtown Chelan. There are shaded benches all along the trail. It is a perfect place for a walk or jog. You can also fish the Chelan River in season, and bird watching is popular at this spot. How to get there: The trail is part of the park adjacent to the main business district of Chelan. Access points along the trail include Columbia at Woodin, Wapato at Emerson and Okanogan at Emerson.

Chelan River (Reach 1) Trail Length 3 miles

This is 3-mile-plus roundtrip walk that overlooks the Chelan Dam and the Chelan River. It takes visitors from the Riverwalk Loop Trail in downtown Chelan to Reach 1 of the Chelan River – the uppermost section of the 4-mile river that flows down to join the Columbia River at Chelan Falls. This trail was built by Chelan County PUD to enhance community recreation as part of its federal license to operate the Lake Chelan Hydro Project. The first section of the trail begins in Chelan, at the boat launch on the south side of the Chelan River. This half-mile section is paved and accessible to all. Along this part of the 1-800-4CHELAN

trail, visitors will learn about the Chelan Dam, which provides enough clean, renewable hydropower to supply about 30,000 average Northwest homes. Interpretive signs also explain the power tunnel (or penstock), an underground pipe, 14-feet in diameter, which draws water from the lake at the base of the dam and carries it to a powerhouse two miles away at Chelan Falls. The lower section of the trail, 1.1 miles long, is gravel and winds through the natural riverbanks. Visitors will enjoy learning about the American Indian Tribes that inhabited the Chelan Valley, the wildlife in the various reaches of the Chelan River and about the unique geology where basalt cliffs form a treacherous, narrow gorge for the river as it nears the Columbia. Please respect wildlife and the natural surroundings as you enjoy the Reach 1 Trail. How to get there: Begins at Riverwalk Park Boat Launch

Little Bear Trail Length 2.3 miles

Little Bear Trail at Lake Chelan State Park is a 2.3-mile loop hiking trail in a previously closed portion of the park. The trail begins between the trailer area restroom and campsite number 22 and travels to the underground highway crossing and then up into the forest overlooking the lake. Lake Chelan State Park Trail runs along the water’s edge through the 127-acre park with 6,000 feet of waterfront. Picnic tables, restrooms and playground equipment. How to get there: Take Hwy. 97A south. Three miles south of Chelan, turn right on South Lakeshore Rd (Hwy 971). Proceed six miles on Lakeshore Rd., and turn right into Lake Chelan State Park. The remaining 190 miles of summer trails are nonmotorized. Within the Glacier Peak and Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness Areas, trails are open to hikers and most sections are also open to horses and similar stock animals. Within the Glacier Peak Wilderness the group size for hiking, riding and camping is limited to 12 heartbeats including stock animals. Within the Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness the group size is limited to 12 people and up to 18 head of stock. Trail opportunities are many. They range from short day hikes near Chelan, Lucerne Landing and Holden Village areas, to overnight trips across the high elevation Summit Trail with its pristine alpine lakes and cirques sprinkled over the Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Mountain Range.

Mountain biking Lake Chelan is an undiscovered “Fat Tire” paradise. There are numerous trails in the Lake Chelan Valley, most of which come under the ownership of County, State or Federal agencies. Singletrack is the stuff most mountain bikers who have gained riding skills crave. There is something about whipping down a hard packed narrow trail through the woods in complete control. There are a number of trails in the Lake Chelan Basin which rank as epic rides. Pot Peak is just one of them. Ten miles... all single track... all downhill... 5,000 feet in elevation drop. The challenge is the climb to 6,500 feet elevation before you get to enjoy this epic trail on the south shore of Lake Chelan. Snowmobiling

Sno-Park permits

Snowmobilers agree that spectacular scenery makes the Lake Chelan area ideal, and 170 miles of well-marked, groomed trails and excellent snow conditions bring people back year after year. There are play areas plus warming huts with wood stoves. Uncrowded trails, sunny weather and spectacular trail conditions give us an edge over the rest of the state.

To park in a non-motorized sports Sno-Park, it is necessary to purchase one (and sometimes two) types of parking permits for your vehicle: a one-day permit, a seasonal permit, and possibly a special groomed trails permit. A Washington State licensed vehicle must have a Washington State S no-Park permit. (Sno-Park Permits are not valid at Echo Ridge Nordic Area.) Sno-Park Permits can be purchased from the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce.

There are six Sno-Parks in the Greater Chelan Area system with trails regularly groomed from the week before Christmas until mid-March. Check www.LakeChelan.com or call (509) 687-SNOW for updated grooming reports. For snowmobile rentals, check the directory under Rentals.

Operators from states not requiring registration must obtain a 60-day registration permit from the Washington State Department of Licensing. Snowmobile registrations are valid October 1 through September 30. The fee includes one Sno-Park permit (vehicle parking permit required at designated Sno-Parks) for each registered snowmobile, which must be on the towing vehicle. The fee also includes one decal for the snowmobile. For information on the winter recreation program, call (360) 902-8844 or visit www.Parks.wa.gov/winter Lake Chelan Visitors Guide 2013/2014

This is no “putt-putt” course, but the course offers fun and challenge to any skilled or novice player. Open daily 10am to 10pm, Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. The entrance is at the Lakeshore Marina parking lot. For a great Mini Golf adventure, the Alpenhorn Drive-In on South Lakeshore Road offers a refreshing experience in the cool trees surrounding the lake, near Lake Chelan State Park. In 2012 Slidewaters added a Lazy River. Float around this over 500 foot lazy river and enjoy your friends, family and an incredible view of Lake Chelan. Slidewaters is open every day from Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day weekend, at 10am. Ample on-site parking.

Rally alley go-karts The kidney shaped track of Rally Alley is located next to the Putting Course at Don Morse Park. Go-Kart rides are available for single and double seating as well as smaller cars for the smaller, future race drivers.

South Lakeshore Road: Follow Highway 97A South to the turn-off at Pat & Mike’s Texaco and you can follow the road to its end, the farthest drivable point up the lake. This route shows the dramatic change between the lower lake basin, and the forested hillsides of the upper lake, past the Narrows.

& Leisure

The Lake Chelan Valley is invigorating. The lake is crystal clear, the air clean, gridlock nonexistent and the pace easy…like small town America. The semi-arid climate lures you to the great outdoors and is the perfect playground for getting back to nature. By getting away from the hectic day-to-day, visitors here can relax and become their better selves, recharging body, mind and spirit. Outdoor exercise is prime in Lake Chelan. Hiking, biking, running or walking in the sunshine, away from the crowds, with a view of the lake is special. July, August and September are the favorite months for swimming in beautiful Lake Chelan. The farther down lake you swim, the warmer it is! Eating fresh, locally grown food adds to the experience. Late summer through fall is the time when stone fruits, cherries, pears and apples are picked in and around Lake Chelan. The Valley boasts quality fruit stands where you can find out how wonderful a truly fresh apple can taste!

Manson Scenic Loop: The paved back roads of Manson make sightseeing by car or bike a quiet, relaxing ride while meandering around three smaller lakes that are surrounded by apple and cherry orchards and vineyards. The route is identified on the map on pages 88 and 89. Other scenic drives include: the Forest Service Roads that climb the mountain ridges above the 25 Mile Creek area on the South Shore, or Grade Creek-Copper Mountain scenic loop road on the North Shore. For more information, call the Chelan Ranger Station at (509) 682-4900.

Walk the Riverwalk Riverwalk Park has great pathways that loop between the two bridges that span the Chelan River in Historic Downtown Chelan. The distance around is one mile, and there are shaded benches all along the trail. There are also picnic tables throughout the park and a grass play area. It is a perfect place for a walk or jog. Good times to run are early in the morning, or early evening when it is cool and you can enjoy a light breeze. It is a good warm-up for a longer walk, run or ride in the lower basin. There are great fishing holes along the banks of the river. Permits are required for those 15 years of age and over. Bring a picnic lunch! Leashed dogs allowed. Fishing licenses are available at: Kelly’s Ace Hardware (509) 682-2815

Picnic: Pack a picnic and your shovel and pail,

Geocaching (pronounced geo-cashing) is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. A geocacher can place a geocache anywhere in the world, pinpoint its location using GPS technology and then share the geocache’s existence and location online. Anyone with a GPS device can then try to locate the geocache. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called ‘geocaches’, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment.

Lake Chelan Visitors Guide 2013/2014

Lake Chelan is known for many things: the beautiful lake, dramatic scenery, warm summer nights and bountiful harvests. Many visitors especially enjoy the ambiance of the valley, which we call “Small Town America.” It is the feeling that comes from a great community where folks know each other by name, and visit on the sidewalk during the day. It’s a place with a parade that features kids and their dogs, and in the fall the air is filled with the sweet smell of harvest. Historic Downtown Chelan and Manson feature quaint shops with apparel and home decor items, homemade fudge, unique gift items and toys for the kids to play in the lake. Whether you are staying for the day or the week, a stroll through the shopping districts should be part of your visit.

HERITAGE & CULTURE

The miners In the 1880’s the lure of precious metals brought prospectors to the upper regions of Lake Chelan. Miners began to trickle into the Stehekin valley on an old Indian trail over Cascade Pass and on other routes from the Skagit River mining district on the western slopes of the Cascades. Stehekin became a busy lake port for miners supplies, which were ferried up lake from Chelan. At the peak of the rush in the late 1890’s, hundreds of prospectors were searching for ore in the mountains above the valley. About twenty-five miles up-valley from Stehekin, the Black Warrior, Blue Evil, and Upper Horseshoe Basin mines showed the greatest promise for production. A wagon road was constructed up the lower ten miles of the Stehekin Valley and a rough trail covered the remaining distance.

History

Explore the past

Geologic beginnings Lake Chelan was carved out of rock by glacial ice about 17,000 years ago. It is made up of two basins which are divided by a shallow sill known as the “Narrows.” The deepest of the two, The Lucerne Basin, holds 92% of the lake’s water in the northern three-quarters, and 5% of the water is below sea level. This basin is also home to one of the deepest lake gorges in the world. The walls of the lake around Safety Harbor Creek and Canoe Creek plunge over a thousand feet to a depth of 386 feet below sea level. It is presumed that the lake was deeper in the 19th century, before a massive underwater rockfall in 1899 that caused a wave of water so large it sank the steamer “Kitten” at 25-Mile Creek.

First settlers Lake Chelan’s first white settlers were William Sanders and William Dumke. They arrived at the south end of the lake the hard way, from the north, in 1886. They crossed the mountains from the Methow Valley and found the steep shoreline impassable. After losing their horse to a fatal fall, they had to carve a cedar log into a crude canoe and made their way 50 miles to the south end of the lake. For a short time in 1880, the U.S. Army maintained Camp Chelan there to watch over the local Indians.

The smaller, Wapato Basin is only 400 feet deep and 12 miles long. This is where the majority of the summer recreation takes place, with lake temperatures reaching 78° in August. Water spilling over from the Lucerne Basin into the Wapato Basin will remain there for an average of ten years before running out over the dam on its way to the Columbia River.

HERITAGE & CULTURE

A look at our past Native Americans probably inhabited the lower Chelan Valley for thousands of years prior to its “discovery” by pioneer trappers, explorers, and prospectors in the 1800’s. The Native Americans derived their names from the world in which they lived, thus the Indians in the Chelan Valley were called the “Tsill-ane,” later spelled Chelan. To them this meant “deep notch”. The first white explorers who ventured into the Chelan area were Alexander Ross of the Pacific Fur Company and David Thompson of the rival Northwest Company. Both were on wide-ranging explorations to become familiar with the terrain and establish strategic fur trading centers for commerce with the Indians. The area went largely unnoticed, except by a few hardy prospectors, until much later in the century. While on a reconnaissance trip for the U.S. Army in 1880, Lt. Thomas Symons saw Lake Chelan and proclaimed it “the most grandly beautiful lake I have ever seen.” On his recommendation the army established Camp Chelan the following year, but due to difficult access it was relocated to Spokane after only one year in service. With the influx of miners in the 1890’s Chelan began to grow, and homesteaders moved in. It did not take long for the first fruit orchards to be established, after the potential for irrigation was realized.

Historic ruby theatre Opened in the summer of 1914, The Ruby is believed to be the oldest continuously running film theatre in Washington State, and is certainly one of the oldest movie theatres in the Pacific Northwest. The theatre was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991 in recognition of its unique history and its contribution as a small town theatre to Chelan Valley and North Central Washington. While the Ruby’s facade has been changed several times over the years, the interior of the theatre remains much like it was when the Ruby was first constructed. The preserved original interior features include a horseshoe balcony and pressed tin ceiling with rosette pattern. This year marks 100 years of operation as a movie house and home to events for the valley’s residents and guests.

The Campbell house Arriving from Iowa in 1889, C.C. Campbell purchased the property that is presently Campbell’s Resort, for $400. In 1901, when the town of Chelan was nothing more than a village on the outlet shores of Lake Chelan, he borrowed $5000 to build a hotel. An immediate success, the hotel was situated at a commanding site. In those pioneer days, when freight wagons were pulled by four and six-horse teams, the hotel was a stopping place for teamsters and drivers. Cattle during 1-800-4CHELAN

those early days were driven across the river at the point where a concrete bridge now spans the Chelan River. The present veranda at the time was pretty much at street level and was used as a sidewalk. At the Chelan Falls Landing, Columbia River steamboats docked, passengers transferred to the local stagecoach and were transported into the town of Chelan. Many people remained overnight at the Campbell Hotel and then traveled up lake by steamer, especially to the head of Lake Chelan where further fine hotels awaited these early day travelers.
