A Short Note From The Desk Of The Publisher
T
hose April showers we experienced in Lake City did little to dampen our local festivities, and with great weather upon us, we're treated to the smell of fresh cut grass and the beautiful blooms of May. And the beautiful weather of the spring bring a lot of events to Guntersville. In this issue alone, we take you to the River & Brews music and beer festival, Art on the Lake, a Native American Pow Wow, and two 5K races, one in its 40th year and the other featuring your favorite superheros. It has indeed been busy. And it's just going to get busier. We know our readers enjoy our coverage of local events, but it's even more fun when you're there in person, so be sure to check the calendar in the back of this issue so you don't miss any of the fun. One of the biggest things happening in Lake City this summer is the return of the famed Guntersville Lake Boat Races in June. For those of you who aren't really familiar with the history of the races, you may be thinking "what's all the fuss?" Thanks to some great historical images and documents to go along with the story by Miranda Oden, we're able to give you a real sense of just what a big part of Lake Guntersville's history the races have played, and why their return with this year's Hydrofest is so significant.
With all we have going on this summer on Lake Guntersville, we know we'll have a lot of visitors and we want to welcome each of you to our wonderful little town. And yes, we do know some good places to eat on the lake. In fact, for our dining section in this issue we will take you to all four of Lake City's waterfront restaurants. If you're having a little too much fun, and want to take relaxation a little farther, you might want to check out Teresa Staggs' new spa in downtown Guntersville. When the building's sign changed to read The Soak House & Soapery, we got curious and decided to check it out for you. Check out this month's Take 10, where we chatted with Teresa about the new spa. And who doesn't love kittens. You do? Great! I have four right now that need good homes. Ilene Russell from God's Feral Felines had no idea how timely her call would be when she reached out to me last month to tell me a little more about the organization. I was all too aware of the issues she described but didn't realize my situation was so commonplace or the cause of such a problem within Marshall County. You may not either, but we never mind supporting a great group with a great cause doing great things in our community. And as always, thanks for reading Lake City Magazine and supporting our advertisers. ~Patrick Oden

fter more than 30 years, Lake City is bringing the tradition of professional powerboat racing back to its waters. Hydrofest 2018, scheduled for June 22-24, will revive a great heritage that began in 1939 when the city of Guntersville hosted their ďŹ rst boat race to commemorate the completion of the new Guntersville Dam and the formation of the lake. While there aren't many still with us that remember that day, the article published in the Huntsville Times in 1989 to commemorate it's 50th anniversary of the first boat races in Guntersville paints a pretty vivid picture of our sleepy little town on a day it never could have expected.

Suspended during World War II, boat racing returned in 1946. During the festivities, the city held its first Miss Guntersville Lake beauty contest, which drew 51 contestants, with Ida Willis taking the title. The competition, an event managed by the Guntersville Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees), became a highlight of the annual boat race festival. The contest came to include 60 of Alabama’s top beauties, competing for the honor to represent the state in the annual Miss Sun and Fun contest at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. A contestant in the 23rd annual festival, Ginger Poitivent went from being crowned Miss Guntersville Lake to becoming Miss Sun and Fun 1962, even going on to become Miss Sun and Fun USA.

The survival of the 1962 Boat Race program and historical photos shown on these pages offer us a little window into glory days of Lake Guntersville's famed boat races.
The Guntersville Jaycees took over the responsibility of hosting the annual boat race festival in 1954 and became members of the American Power Boat Association (APBA) that same year. The APBA is the sole governing authority in the United States for powerboat racing and they sanction races in several different classes. With this new partnership between the Jaycees and the APBA, Lake City hosted the 1954 Inboard National Championships, the first of many inboard championship races to be held here on the lake. In 1961, the APBA introduced their Stock Outboard National Championships, featuring racers from all over the United States and Canada who had placed either first, second, or third in a race sponsored by the National Power Boat Association earlier in the season. The Jaycees were exceptionally busy in 1962. In two weeks, they hosted two national championship races on beautiful Lake Guntersville. First, they held the Limited Inboard National Championships. Then, with only two days off, they held the Stock Outboard National Championships. Also through the efforts of the Jaycees that year, Lake Guntersville became the site of Roy Duby’s historic run when he set the world’s mile straightaway speed record of 200.419 miles per hour for a piston-powered, propeller-driven craft, a record that would not be broken until 2000. On April 17, 1962, Duby roared down the waters of Lake Guntersville with a Rebel flag painted above the Guntersville Jaycees’ name on the stabilizer of the Miss U.S. 1, an unlimited series hydroplane boat owned by US Equipment Company. The following year, Lake City hosted the first unlimited hydroplane boat race, known as the Dixie Cup. The unlimited series hydroplanes were the fastest in the world, built with engines from WWII fighters. A huge event, the Dixie Cup was held here five times between 1963 and 1969, and it served as the season kickoff each time it was held. Unlimited hydroplane racing fans remember beautiful Lake Guntersville as the place two of the most famous boats in unlimited hydroplane history won their first championship race. In 1965, Buddy Byer steered the Miss Madison to its first ever win, claiming the Dixie Cup and the $4,500 in prize money. Four race boats and 18 drivers after Byer’s historic win, the Miss Madison team has accumulated an additional 27 wins, two APBA Gold Cups, and seven national championships. Then, in 1969, Bill Sterett won Guntersville Lake’s last Dixie Cup aboard the Miss Budweiser, which would prove to be the team’s first of many championship seasons. The massive red boats dominated the sport for 42 years, winning 24 world championships and 15 Gold Cups. No other boat in hydroplane history has as many wins as the retired Miss Bud.

THEN AND NOW

Modern hydroplanes weigh a minimum of 6,750 pounds and are made of aluminum, fiberglass, carbon fiber, and graphite composites. These million-dollar monsters are shaped like an aircraft wing and secure the driver in F-16 fighter jet cockpits. Unlimited hydroplane boats are built according to a unique “three-point” design, meaning they only touch the water at three points when racing. This causes the boat to “plane” on top of the water’s surface, eliminating colossal amounts of drag and friction and resulting in much greater speeds. The hydroplane is propelled by a 16-inch propeller the size of a hub cap and is powered by a single Lycoming T-55 L-7 Chanook helicopter turbine engine, capable of unleashing an impressive 3,000 horsepower. With the world’s fastest and loudest racing boats capable of speeds greater than 200 miles per hour, H1 Unlimited hydroplane racing is known as “NASCAR on the water” and invites fans by the hundreds-ofthousands. Sanctioned by the APBA, the H1 Unlimited season runs from July through September and has traditionally consisted of five races. While the smaller inboard and outboard boats raced here until 1986, the unlimited series has not raced on Lake Guntersville since the 1969 Dixie Cup. Bringing unlimited hydroplane racing back to the 69,000-acre reservoir has not been an easy task. Charley Wiggins, former Miss Madison driver and current owner of Wiggins Hydroplane Racing located in Gadsden—the only Unlimited racing team to call Alabama home—with his orange and white U-27 hydroplane boat, is a native of the area and has reportedly spent years advocating the return of the races to Guntersville. In the fall of 2015, Wiggins approached Guntersville’s mayor, Leigh Dollar, who directed him to Katy Norton, president of Marshall County Convention and Visitors Bureau. Norton set up a committee headed by Larue Kohl, and together they started working on bringing the H1 Unlimited hydroplanes back to beautiful Lake Guntersville. Lake Guntersville’s greatly anticipated 2018 Hydrofest is expected to attract 30,000-50,000 fans into Marshall County, as estimated by the Bureau. Featuring the H1 Unlimited series, Lake Guntersville’s Hydrofest will serve as the unlimited hydroplane racing season kickoff, just as it did when the city hosted the Dixie Cup back in the 1960’s. Hydroplane racers hope to top speeds of 200 mph on a two-and-half mile oval track laid out on Brown’s Creek. In addition to the return of the H1 Unlimited hydroplane series, Lake Guntersville’s Hydrofest will feature other exciting water sports including the Grand Prix World Hydros and stock outboard racing. In addition, the event’s festivities will include a wakeboard exhibition featuring some of the industry’s top professional athletes. A special highlight will be the greatly anticipated return appearance of one of the most famous boats in Unlimited hydroplane series history, the winner of Guntersville’s last Dixie Cup in 1969 and a reminder of Lake Guntersville’s great heritage of boat racing—Miss Budweiser! So get your family and friends together this June and head to Sunset Drive for Guntersville’s Hydrofest and the grand opportunity to travel back in time to the glory days of Lake City’s famed boat races. OF THE SOAK HOUSE
"I have always loved hosting guests and now I get to do it everyday."
~ Teresa Staggs

LAKE CITY · 29
Lake City Magazine: I understand you’re from Dallas. How did you
end up in Guntersville? Teresa Staggs: My husband accepted a position with BAE Systems back in 2009 so we packed up the kids and the cat and headed to Alabama. We were told Guntersville was a beautiful lake community where we would be happy raising our kids. We took that advice and planted our roots.
Lake City Magazine: What was the spark that ignited the idea to open
The Soak House & Soapery? Teresa Staggs: Many years of daydreaming of owning our own business combined with traveling to some pretty amazing places. We gleaned small details from all the places we’ve enjoyed visiting over the years and created our own unique version of the perfect relaxing experience. I have always loved hosting guests and now I get to do it everyday.
Lake City Magazine: What is a “Soapery”? Teresa Staggs: A soapery is a place where soap is made and/or sold.
While we don’t make our soap at The Soak House, we do carry hand made natural soaps from vendors we know and trust. We only carry paraben free, sulfate free and cruelty free products. What’s inside our products is far more important to us than how they look or fancy packaging. We want our customers to be healthy and we hope they feel that when they use our products.
Lake City Magazine: In addition to your soak rooms, the spa has an
infrared sauna and offers spray tanning. What other unique things have you tried to incorporate into the spa? Teresa Staggs: We currently offer a variety of mud masks and paraffin wax treatments but we are exploring the idea of adding massage therapy or maybe an aesthetician to our team.
Lake City Magazine: You just had a "Botox Party,” how did that go? Teresa Staggs: Oh my goodness! The party went very well. We had many of our current customers attend and met some new friends who have since become customers. The party was such a hit that we are already planning on having another one sometime this summer.
Lake City Magazine: For someone who has never been to a soak house or soapery, what should they expect? Walk us through a typical visit. Teresa Staggs: Once you choose the service or package you want, we take over from there. If you choose a therapeutic spa bath, our signature service, you will be greeted and led to the lounge where you will fill out a short questionnaire. We then show you to your private soak room where you’ll change into a terry cloth robe and slippers then head back to the lounge where your relaxing experience begins. There’s always a variety of hot teas to choose from and fresh fruit water to sip. While you are lounging, we are hard at work preparing your soak room to your specifications. After a few minutes we escort you back to your candle lit, private soak room where you will find the claw foot tub filled with your personal selection of therapeutic bath additives along with a tub board boasting of a complimentary snack and cool drink. Our tubs are equipped with champagne bubblers (thousands of heated air bubbles thoroughly support and massage your body for an invigorating, blissful experience) and are remote controlled by you. Once we ensure you have everything you need, we leave the room and you begin your private 90 minute mini vacation! The best part is you do not have to clean up when you are done. All you have to do is relax. We take care of everything else.
Lake City Magazine: You actually have a room with a larger tub and an intentionally more masculine decor for the fellas don’t you? Teresa Staggs: We do. All of our rooms have the same amenities but one of the tub room's decor is more masculine and boasts a larger tub fit for a king. We even have a luxurious bath additive called Drone that was specially formulated with the men in mind. It’s masculine scent is a favorite of ours. 30 · LAKE CITY
Lake City Magazine: It sounds like you’ve tried to create a space that
caters to more than just the individual who wants to relax. Do you ever have groups that come in together? Teresa Staggs: Yes. While we do see many customers who prefer their time at The Soak House be spent alone, we have an equal number of folks who book their sessions with friends or family. Of course couples find our space to be the perfect place for some quality alone time together where they can reconnect, but best friends, sisters, even mothers and daughters find it to be a fun, relaxing way to just be together. We have even hosted larger groups such as bridal parties. We love being the place where cherished memories are made.
Lake City Magazine: What has been your most popular service since
opening a few months back? Teresa Staggs: The Divine has been our most popular service/package since opening. This package includes all the services we offer at an affordable price. Aside from the package, our VersaSpa Pro automatic spray tan booth is a huge hit. Customers love the fact that the booth is private, heated and super fast. I think we have spray tanned half the town already!
Lake City Magazine: Last question is a total non sequitur. What do you
love most about Guntersville? Teresa Staggs: That’s a tough one. There are so many things I love about Guntersville, but if I have to pick just one it has to be the environment as a whole. From the second you drive over the river bridge into downtown, you know you are somewhere special. The scenery, the water, the tree line, the sunsets; all perfect. All those things coupled with a close knit community make Guntersville the perfect place to live. I feel very blessed to live and now work here.

Here Kitty Kitty Local non-profit works to make a humane difference in local feral cat population
C
lovis Chesterfield (C.C.) was born to a colony of cared-for stray cats in a neighborhood close to ours, and showed up at our house attached to the hand of our youngest daughter. Concessions were made, and we agreed the cat could stay as long it lived outside. C.C. played, we fed him (and most of the other cats and possums in the neighborhood it seemed), and he grew into a very sweet cat. So sweet in fact, he attracted the attention of a cute little feral female who would eventually come close enough to eat from our front porch, but never close enough to let humans get within a couple of feet. The courtship was short and before we knew it, the little lady the kids had begun calling Ellie was expecting kittens. C.C. had been missing for a while by the time the kittens were born under a neighbor’s shed. We'd seen a coyote in the neighborhood, and being so close to the lake, countless birds of prey. He never returned. As soon as the kittens were old enough to wander out from the protection our neighbor’s shed offered them, they all vanished without a trace, literally overnight. It seemed to be a pretty common story amongst our neighbors. Not long after, a stray Calico kitten found on the roadside a mile or so away from our neighborhood, also found its way into our lives as the new "outdoor" cat we fed, played with and grew to love. Her name is Eggs. She, too, grew—presumably along with the possums—and eventually took a suitor: a sweet, fluffy, and lazy little stray that loves lunch meats and now answers to Meatloaf. We finally got smart (or just gave in), but the cat food, and subsequently Eggs and Meatloaf, found their way into the house. Four cute little kittens were born at the end of March. The little puffball to the left is named Sebastian or "Sea Bass" for short. You can imagine how perfect the timing was when serendipitously I received a call from Ilene Russell from God's Feral Felines (GFF) a couple of weeks ago.
Ilene had seen Lake City Magazine and hoped we would be able to help get the word out about the non-profit's mission in Marshall County. Unaware she was about to tell me my own story, I asked Ilene what exactly the group does. She went on to explain the commonplace occurrence of feral cat colonies mixing with local non-neutered stray and "outdoor" cat populations, and how if unchecked, a feral female cat will typically have three litters of kittens a year. Many of these cats become meals of opportunity for the local predators that exist in our largely rural county, and at the very least, are facing a difficult existence. She continued by explaining that GFF practices a trap, neuter, and return (TNR) approach to helping control the feral cat population. When a feral colony is reported, the group traps the cats, gives them their shots and neuters or spays them, and then returns them to their colony. If, however, there is known danger to the colony they came from, they are relocated. When GFF first began, there wasn't a feasible way for them to manage an adoption program, but they’ve since formed a partnership with PetSmart in Albertville to be able to help find homes for cats and kittens that need them the most. In addition to the 1500 feral cats the organization has neutered or spayed since beginning in 2013, GFF has come to realize that many cats in Marshall County are outdoor pets that are never sterilized because of the (perceived) expense involved in the procedure. In an effort to address the issue, through their Kitty Project, GFF will subsidize the cost of sterilization for those who qualify. Having witnessed the issue first hand, I had an instant appreciation for what the group is trying to accomplish ... what they have accomplished. Working from donations and fundraisers like their recent Cat Walk 5k, the group continues to fight the seemingly never-ending battle to ensure the highest quality of life for the feral cat colonies of Marshall County.
