Lakehead University is committed to fostering interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary research in partnership with industry, community organizations and government. Through our Research Centres and Institutes, we foster intellectual environments in which researchers and students combine their expertise to create new forms of inquiry and new types of solutions.

ANISHINAABE KENDAASIWIN INSTITUTE (AKI)

The principle of Indigenous self-determination in research underpins the newly formed institute. The purpose of AKI is to support minobimaadiziwin amongst Anishinaabe peoples, nations and territories through research that is situated in Anishinaabe knowledges and good relationships that are respectful, reciprocal, and anti-colonial. The acronym for the institute, “AKI” means land in Anishinaabemowin.

BIOREFINING RESEARCH INSTITUTE (BRI)

BRI creates novel research and development opportunities, new technology models and jobs, and value-added products from renewable resources that ultimately lead to reduced dependence on fossil fuels and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

CENTRE OF EDUCATION AND RESEARCH ON POSITIVE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT (CERPYD)

CENTRE FOR NORTHERN STUDIES (CNS)

Established in the late 1980s, the Centre for Northern Studies has directly contributed, through its academic program, speaker series, grants, publications, international student exchanges, and research projects, to the university’s national and international reputation as one of the main centres for Northern Studies in Canada and indeed the entire Circumpolar North. CNS was created by a partnership of regional and academic representatives to help ensure that Lakehead University is able to respond to the needs of our regions.
