2012-13 IN REVIEW HISTORY/RECORDS
Bowe’s tenure with the Lakers began in 1999 as an assistant under Willis Brown. The Cleveland native took the reins as head coach in 2004 and led the Lakers to a 29-32 record through his first two years. The Lakers would go 38-10 from 2005-07 but remained at or near the .500 mark for the next two seasons. The 2009-10 season saw the Lakers make the jump by posting a 19-12 record and finishing second in the OCCAC. Bowe was named OCCAC Coach of the Year following the season. The 2010-11 season was a historical one, as Bowe and the Lakers went 24-12 en route to the first District Championship in program history. Lakeland advanced to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament where it finished eighth in the country. Lakeland’s upward trend continued a year later when it repeated as District Champions. The Lakers won their first two games in the National Tournament, advancing to the Final Four before falling to eventual national champion Mott in the tournament semifinals. Lakeland finished the year with a 27-9 overall record, good for the most wins since the 1991-92 season. In 2012-13 Bowe and the Lakers captured the programs third OCCAC championship, ending an 18-year draught by going 11-1 against conference opponents. The Lakers won at least 20 games for the third straight season and made their third straight appearance in the District Championship before falling to Owens in the title game. Lakeland finished the season as the fourth highest scoring team in the country, averaging 92.4 points per game, and was second in the nation in blocks after averaging 7.5 per game. Bowe leads the OCCAC in wins among active coaches and currently ranks second in school history with 190 victories. His playing career began at nearby Benedictine High School where he led the Bengals to a pair of regional and district finals. He went on to play four years at NCAA Division III Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio. During his time at Baldwin-Wallace, Bowe and the Yellow Jackets made history by earning their first NCAA Tournament bid in 1994. BW advanced all the way to the “Sweet-16” that season, which still stands as one of the most exciting seasons in program history. Bowe was also a contributor to BW’s 1996 team which won the program’s first OAC Tournament championship. Bowe holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Communications and Human Resources from Baldwin-Wallace. He also earned a master’s degree in Applied Communications and Methodology from Cleveland State University and a master’s degree in Human Resources Management from Capella University. He and his wife, Monica, live in Macedonia with their young daughter Kaia and the blessed memory of their son, TJ.

ORNETTE GARDENHIRE | Assistant Coach
ABOUT LAKELAND LAKELAND HOOPS COACHING STAFF
The 2012-13 season marks Ornette Gardenhire’s fifth as an assistant coach with the Lakeland men’s basketball program. Since his arrival, the Lakers have increased their win total each season and have won a pair of Region 12, District 11 championships for the first time in school history. In Gardenhire’s third season, Lakeland earned the program’s first district title and NJCAA Division II National Tournament appearance, ultimately finishing eighth. Last year, Gardenhire helped the Lakers repeat as district champions and advance to the Final Four before falling to eventual national champion Mott CC in the national semifinals. No stranger to NJCAA men’s basketball or the national tournament, Gardenhire was an assistant at nearby Cuyahoga Community College in 2003-04 when the Challengers won a national championship. He helped Cuyahoga repeat as district champions one year later and advance to the NJCAA Final Four. Gardenhire assumed head coaching responsibilities for the 2007-08 season, guiding his team to a 21-9 overall record and 12-4 mark in OCCAC competition. The following season he transitioned to Lakeland to work alongside head coach Terry Bowe. Gardenhire was a four year college starter, playing two years at Lackawanna Junior College in Scranton, Pa. before playing his final two seasons at Bloomfield College in Bloomfield, N.J. He and his wife, Debra, have five children.
CHRIS ULRICH | Assistant Coach Chris Ulrich joined the Lakeland coaching staff prior to the start of the 1998-99 campaign. Coach Ulrich is responsible for formulating scouting reports, breaking down game film, coordinating travel arrangements and working with the post players. Ulrich is a 1992 graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College with a Bachelor’s Degree in business administration. He was a four year letter winner for the Yellow Jackets, and served as team captain his senior season. Ulrich was raised in Erie, Pennsylvania and is a graduate of Strong Vincent High School. He is currently a Customer Service Manager for Stahls’ Transfer Express. Coach Ulrich resides in Mentor with his wife Dawn. 2013-14 LAKELAND MEN’S BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE
