About Lakeland L akeland S occer
Welcome to Lakeland Community College, the first college in Ohio founded by a vote of the people. As a college, we take great pride in providing students with the education and training needed to earn a degree, start a career, upgrade job skills or complete the first two years of college education. In addition, it is essential for the college to provide students with opportunities to enhance their college experiences through participation in athletics or on-campus student organizations.

Head Coach Djuro Peric
6
The 2012 season is Coach Peric’s forty-first year with the Lakeland soccer program. His career at the college began in 1972 as a player. His freshman year, he earned both team Most Valuable Player honors and was named All-Turnpike Athletic Conferenece (TAC). As a sophomore, he was voted Best Forward and was an All-Region XII selection. In his two years as a Laker, he was unanimously voted team captain by his teammates, while leading the team in scoring both years. At that time, he earned the sixth spot on the all-time goals scored list. Highlights of Coach Peric’s playing career at Lakeland include being selected as the inaugural LCC Invitational Tournament’s Best Forward in 1972 after scoring three goals with three assists against Case Western Reserve University. That record of nine points in a game stood until All-American player George Attoh broke it in 1976.
After playing, Coach Peric continued his career at Lakeland as an assistant coach under Mario Marcopoli. In 1988 Coach Peric took over head coaching responsibilities. Since that time, the Lakers have posted a 228-170-26 record. Coach Peric attributes his success to Coach Marcopoli. “Everything I did and everything I made, including graduating from Lakeland, I owe to Mr. Marcopoli,” said Peric, “He was truly the best mentor I could have had.” As a coach, Peric earned the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference Coach of the Year Award six times (1995, 1996, 1999, 2001, 2002, and 2008). His Lakers won OCCAC Championships in each of those six seasons. During his tenure as a coach, Lakeland has produced 15 NJCAA All-Americans, 10 NJCAA Academic All-Americans and six NSCAA All-Americans. Gary Grover (Madison High School) was named twice (1991, 1992) to the NJCAA All-American team; while Andrew Pfeifer (1994,1995) and Damir Kuduzovic (2007,2008) were NJCAA Men’s Soccer Active Coaching Records two-time NJCAA Academic All(Min. 200 wins) Americans. Lakeland Community College Men’s Soccer

The 2012 Lakeland men’s soccer team will look to capitalize on a core group of returning players as they look to return to the Region XII tournament following a one year hiatus. With experience at nearly every position and the addition of talented newcomers from throughout the area, the Lakers will look to be competitive in one of the toughest regions in the country.
Key Returners Lakeland’s key returners begin with a pair of All-Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) selections in Ryongmyeeong Cho (Seoul, South Korea) and Jon-Michael Vieira (Whitby, Ontario). Cho spent much of his freshman season as a defensive midfielder and will likely drop deeper as a sophomore. Vieira was among the top midfielders in the area in his first collegiate season en route to an All-Region selection. As a sophomore, Vieira will look to ignite the offense as the primary distributor from the midfield. Classmates Michael Maiorano (Whitby, Ontario) and Abdel Rodriguez (Las Vegas, Nev.) will serve as the final two roadblocks for the opposing offense. Maiorano transitions to the center back position after spending much of his freshman year as a striker while Rodriguez returns in goal after starting in all but one game last season. They will benefit from the return of Kenneth Austen (Mentor) and Augusto Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay), who will flank Maiorano on defense. Austen and Ramirez will benefit from a year of experience after contributing significant minutes on the back line as freshmen.
Newcomers Lakeland welcomes a trio of Lake Catholic High School graduates who spent last year at different colleges. Scott Scaperato (Concord) and Jake Alicea (Mentor) come from Cleveland State University while Mirko Bakula (Willowick) joins from nearby Notre Dame College. Bakula will provide support at left back while Scaperato and Alicea will look to set the pace offensively. The defense is bolstered by the support of Brian Anderson (St. Ignatius) and Matt Russell (Brush) as key contributors off the bench. Classmate Ivan Luketina (Wickliffe) will compete for time in goal and has shown early promise as a young goalkeeper. Freshmen Ma’Cain Spragling (Brush) and Jakhongir Saidkarimov (Willoughby) will be fixtures in the outside midfield positions while Sebastian Vieira (Whitbmy, Ontario) will look to team up with his brother in a central role. The versatility of Nikola Brnada (Willoughby South) and Zeljko Musa (Eastlake North) will provide the Lakers with depth at nearly every position on the pitch and will prove invaluable as the season progresses.
