Doug Elliott Doug Elliott’s commitment to learning has played a key role in Lakeland College’s success.

From 2005 to 2011, Doug served as the chair of the Lakeland College Board of Governors.

He oversaw progressive changes at Lakeland while always stressing the importance of financial stability, program quality and excellent student service.

Lakeland’s programming increased, student enrolment grew and facilities and land base expanded during Doug’s tenure as chair. The former schoolteacher and lifelong farmer also served as a program advisory committee member for the crop technology program and was a panel member on producer forums organized by students.

“Education is absolutely critical because it’s the first step in a lifelong journey of learning. The best thing that any student can learn is how to learn and how much there is to learn,” says Doug.

“The purpose of Lakeland College is to give our students an opportunity to reach their potential, achieve their goals and get a great start on life.”

A longstanding supporter of Lakeland, Doug purchased a lifetime alumni membership and established the Joan Elliott Memorial Scholarship in memory of his late wife.

Doug’s volunteerism goes beyond Lakeland. Over the years, he’s served as a board chair or director of several co-operatives and industry organizations, including the Eastalta Co-op, Vermilion Seed Cleaning Co-op Association, Alberta Canola Producers Commission and the Canola Council of Canada, among others. For his significant contributions and achievements, Doug was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

It is with great respect that Lakeland College recognizes Doug Elliott of Vermilion as a Distinguished Citizen and awards him an Honorary Bachelor of Applied Business Degree.

President’s Medal The most prestigious award given by Lakeland College, the President’s Medal is awarded to a graduating student at each campus who has demonstrated excellence in academics and leadership in student activities.

Each President's Medal is numbered and embossed with the crest of Lakeland College. This year medals #59 and #60 are being awarded.

Nominations came from all facets of the college including faculty, support staff and students, and are reviewed by the Awards Committee with a recommendation made to the President.

This year’s recipient for the Vermilion Campus is Sierra Unick, graduate of the Environmental Sciences: Water Conservation and Management program.

Krupa Shah, graduate of the Business Administration: Accounting program, received the President’s Medal for the Lloydminster Campus on May 31, 2019.

Governor General’s Academic Medal The Governor General's Academic Medal was established in 1873 and is awarded to the student who graduates with the highest academic standing in a diploma-level post-secondary program. This medal is numbered and engraved with the Crest of the Royal Arms of Canada. The recipient will be registered with the Chancellery of Canadian Orders and Decoration at Rideau Hall, Ottawa.

This award was presented to Daneca Goldsmith on May 31, a graduate of the Business Administration: Accounting program.

I am delighted to bring both greetings and congratulations from the Legislative Assembly to all the 2019 graduates of Lakeland College.

For almost 106 years Lakeland College has been the starting point for many valuable and successful careers.

At its inception in 1913, the college was focused on agriculture. How appropriate that an agricultural college has been fertile ground for abundant growth, albeit of an academic nature.

The number of courses on offer, and the variety, is quite breathtaking. They range from environmental sciences to power engineering, early learning and child care to business, interior design to esthetics and to fire and emergency services and trades.

This veritable cornucopia is testament not only to the expansive interests of its students, but also to the ambition and vision of Lakeland’s administrators.

In this regard the college, as a collective, lives up to its motto:

Ever to Excel.

I hope that you will make it a personal ambition to further develop the skills you have learned here at Lakeland and go on, like many before you, to serve your community, province and country with distinction.

Most importantly, develop them so you too may ever excel and flourish.

Fellow graduates, I am humbled to offer my congratulations to you for your personal accomplishments over the course of your program!

It is no small feat to have finally made it to this one last great achievement at Lakeland College; your graduation ceremony.

During our time at Lakeland, we have been given the opportunity to surprise ourselves time after time at our own capabilities through the tireless efforts of our instructors, mentors and peers. We have developed not only as students and young leaders, but personally as well in preparation to embark on the next steps in our journey through life.

As we enter the first stages of our lives post-graduation, may we have great appreciation for all that we have become, and those who have helped to get us to this point. We are capable of so much, have accomplished so much, and will continue to grow and achieve so much more.
