The home’s adjoining seasonal carriage house features rustic natural woodwork throughout. The large-scale great room, w/large fieldstone fireplace, is surrounded on three sides with screened and open porches looking out to Mt. Chocorua. At Intermont, the small things were the big things‌ Welcoming the phoebes who nest in the eaves every spring, raising their clamoring chicks until they fledge. Sitting with a book on the south porch as a hummingbird drinks from the irises, and mock orange blossoms perfume the air. Enjoying a glass of wine and gazing at Mt. Chocorua from the north porch while our musically-inclined friends perform a mini-concert.
Watching the distant 4th of July fireworks from a screened porch as fireflies dance in the foreground.
Playing croquet on the back lawn and laughing our heads off at how bad we are.
Walking the three-mile loop on Cleveland Hill with boisterous friends and their spirited dogs. Delighting in the majesty of a thunderstorm passing over and being rewarded with a double rainbow, stretching from hill to hill, at its end.
Piling in the car with beach toys and towels for the short trip to Bear Camp Pond. Taking the back roads to the Sandwich Fair every year on that gloriously colorful Columbus Day weekend. Engaging friendly competitors in board games around a roaring fire in the great room. Donning cross country skis and layers of clothing to cut trails directly out our back door.
Drifting off to sleep with a smile as 42 family members, gathered here for a week, settle down for the night.
Favorite Features: History just inside the walls of the house: fencing marks on the wall in Francis Cleveland’s boyhood bedroom; rooms named for long-ago summer guests of Mrs. Cleveland, including the piggery, a room so designated for the very messy little boy who used to stay there. And history outside, too: Mrs. Cleveland’s lovely tiered garden, the stone walls and pathways and furniture from her tea house; the pet cemetery, with Rusty’s gravestone from 1931. The many porches comfortable for all seasons and all times of day. The commodious kitchen designed to be as easy for a crowd to cook in as it is for one or two people to make a meal. The ability to use a just a few rooms or the entire house, because the heating zones are set up in a modular fashion. The ceiling fans in every bedroom that always make for comfortable sleeping. The easy proximity to Tamworth village and all it has to offer, from the museum to the distillery, from the Barnstormers to the History Center.
