a tribute to elton john and billy joel starring Craig A Meyer & Donnie Kehr with the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra
Dear Friends, Pablo Picasso once said, “The purpose of art is washing away the dust of daily life off of our souls.” The 2018-19 Mendel Center Mainstage season, our 27th year of presenting, surely will send you on a soul-restoring journey through comedy, music, dance, theatre, and more. The United States Army Field Band and Soldiers’ Chorus is the season prelude, soaring with nearly 100 musicians and vocalists onstage in a patriotic July 5th musical celebration. The concert is a free gift to our community.
MIKE NADOLSKI Executive Director The Mendel Center at Lake Michigan College
From there it only gets better. We welcome the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra back for our second seasonopening collaboration, this time with Piano Men – A Tribute to Elton John and Billy Joel. Join us as we present the music of two music legends, as performed by Broadway veterans Craig A Meyer and Donnie Kehr and our very own SMSO. Four Discovery Series shows bring to life performance experiences for children, young people, and their families, including the highly interactive and engaging Artrageous and Peg + Cat LIVE!, the allnew stage adaptation of the hit PBS Kids show. Fresh sounds are in store with Indie Fest 18 featuring three music headliners. Between acts browse artistic offerings in the lobbies, partake in delicious foods from local food trucks and restaurants, and sip your favorite local wines or craft beers. More music abounds with nearly every season production featuring or incorporating music in some way, shape, or form. It all leads up to our season-finale presentation of the Broadway hit-sensation Jersey Boys! The Economic Club of Southwestern Michigan Speakers Series celebrates its 75th anniversary this year with four insightful presenters and two additional special engagements that will deliver thought provoking views on today’s world. I encourage you to take action now by becoming a Series Member, sponsor, contributor, or all three! The Concert Band & Soldiers’ Chorus are the oldest and largest of The U.S. Army Field Band’s performing components. The 60-member Concert Band and 29-member Soldiers’ Chorus perform regularly in some of the most famous concert halls in the world and just as often in the humblest auditoriums in the smallest of communities. The joining of these two ensembles allows them to offer unparalleled versatility of programming, ranging from orchestral masterworks and operatic arias to Sousa marches, jazz classics, and Broadway musicals. The band and chorus also perform independently and have recently shared the stage with the Boston Pops, the Cincinnati Pops, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the National Symphony Orchestra. Tickets are required for this free event. This event does not count toward the number of performances needed for Series member discounts. Limit 4 tickets.
