Local groups help federal workers By Brian Fernandes bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com
Organizations around the region are stepping up to help, as workers and their families struggle during the nation’s longest partial federal government shutdown. The help has come in various forms. “The key is to take off some of the pressure from these folks (so they can) worry less about where their food is coming from,”
HOLLIDAY KARATINOS
JANUARY 23, 2019
explained Greg Giordano, assistant tax collector of Pasco County. The federal government partially shut down on Dec. 22, in the midst of a budget battle between President Donald Trump and members of congress, over funding for a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico. Over the past weekend,Trump offered a deal that would include money for the border wall, while granting some immigrants protection for three years. But, Democrats
were not moved by Trump’s offer. The impasse affects about 800,000 federal employees, including some who are not working during the shutdown, and others who are working without pay. The U.S. Coast Guard is one group of federal employees who are working without pay. Pasco County Tax Collector Mike Fasano See SHUTDOWN, page 19A

As it continues its mission to reduce the overuse and misuse of illicit drugs and alcohol, the Pasco County Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention has witnessed progress during several areas during the past year. During 2018, Pasco County: • Saw its drug poisoning death rate, or overdoses, register a slight decrease — for the first time since 2014 • Reported lower figures of illicitly used prescription pain relievers among its high school student population • Saw a decline in alcohol usage among youth in the county • Registered dips in other alcohol-use indicators, such as underaged drinking and impaired driving Chrissie Parris, interim director for the alliance, which is also known as ASAP, characterized those reports as “big wins” and “good signs” for the county during a recent interview with The Laker/Lutz News. “The message seems to be getting out there,” Parris said, regarding the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Susan Frimmel enjoys the social gathering — known as the Kumquat Festival — that brings all things kumquat to Downtown Dade City. Taking part in the festival, known for its Old Florida charm, has been a tradition for her for 15 years, and this year promises to be no exception. Frimmel, administrative director/marketing for AdventHealth Zephyrhills, said she’s looking forward to the event, set for Jan. 26 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. She is teaming up with AdventHealth Dade City staff to pitch their tent and give out 10,000 of the items they’re known for – tote bags. “People will come back year after year to get the next edition,” Frimmel said, referring to the bags. They come in handy for holding arts and crafts purchases from vendors, and, of course, kumquat treats. For the 22nd year, vendors will offer pies, salsas, craft beer and wine - all flavored with the diminutive orange fruit described as the “little gem of the citrus industry.” John Moors is the executive director of The Greater Dade City Chamber of Commerce, which leads an army of volun-

Project prompts school board to hire land use attorney square-foot corporate business park, plus 11,495 residences and other supportive uses in an area east of the Suncoast Parkway, west of the CSX rail line and south of State Road 52. The attorney will represent the district in negotiations and discussions with the owners of Project Arthur, which at this time include Lennar Homes and Metro Development — regarding the placement, construction, purchase and ownership of school facilities within the development. In other action, the school board: • Approved a two-year extension, for the 2019 and 2020 calendar years, for these members of the Penny for Pasco Oversight Committee who wish to serve an additional term: Gary Evans, Hugh Townsend, Niko Tzoumas, George Iwan, Tom Massey and Paul McClintock • Approved a memorandum of understanding with the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office and the National Cyber Partnership regarding the district’s collaboration in the establishment and development of the Florida’s Forensic Institute for Research, Security, and Tactics (F1RST) program, which aims to develop leading edge research. The agreement has no binding impact on the district, but would be helpful in applications seeking grants, according to the board’s agenda materials.

Project Arthur, a major development that’s been submitted to Pasco County for its review, has prompted Pasco County Schools to approve the use of a land use attorney on an as-needed basis. In seeking the approval, district documents describe Project Arthur as “a new and unique development, which is proposing to use charter schools as a way to mitigate for future student impacts.” Having that expert resource available, the document notes “will be beneficial to the Planning Service department” and will “help to protect the interests of the school district.” The Pasco County School Board voted unanimously to hire Alan Zimmet, a land use attorney with the law firm of Bryant Miller Olive, to assist the district in reviewing the Comprehensive Plan, Development Order, and other documents. “The law firm’s services will be used on an “as-needed” basis over the course of this fiscal year,” according to the school board’s action. Project Arthur is a proposed development on nearly 6,951 acres of land known as Bexley South and Bexley North. The proposal calls for a 24 million-
Duke’s landscaping plan gains approval the additional landscaping, to buffer the substation from Meadow Pointe, and to eliminate the proposed landscaping between Satinleaf and the substation. In other action, the board: • Approved a request from Tracy L. and Raul Rodriguez Jr./Keiro Academy, for a private school on 20.6 acres of land zoned for agricultural and residential use.The parcel is on the east side of Bellamy Brothers Boulevard, about one-half mile north of Darby Road. According to the applicant’s information,“Our student population will primarily demonstrate anxiety, sadness, defiance and school refusal issues stemming from technology overuse. Our students simply need to reconnect with nature in a screen-free environment and to develop social and life skills to succeed. We intend to create a program exclusively for boys age (15 to 20) and seek to maintain a daily census of 32 students who will live on the property. • Recommended approval of a license for the sale of alcoholic beverages at Chipotle Mexican Grill, at the northwest corner of State Road 56 and Grand Cypress Drive, extending to Sierra Center Boulevard. The Planning Commission is the county’s land planning agency. It has decision-making authority for special exception requests, which can be appealed to the Pasco County Commission. All other planning commission decisions are recommendations to the Pasco County Commission, which has final authority on zoning and land use matters.

The Pasco County Planning Commission has approved a landscaping plan submitted by Duke Energy Florida LLC., in connection to an electrical substation in Wesley Chapel. The planning board had previously approved the electric company’s request for an expansion to its electrical substation on a 20-acre parcel on the north side of Satinleaf Lane, about 650 feet west of Smith Road. However, that approval was contingent on Duke’s subsequent submission of a landscaping plan relating to the project for the planning board’s approval. Residents of Meadow Pointe had sought additional landscaping to reduce the visual impacts from the expanded substation. Drew Gilmore, a public engagement specialist for Duke Energy, outlined the company’s plan for buffering the substation from its neighbors’ views. The plan he presented included more trees and a different assortment of plantings than initially proposed. The electric company also has agreed to add more trees in an area within the Meadow Pointe subdivision. However, while Meadow Pointe residents wanted more landscaping, those living closest to the substation — in Satinleaf — told commissioners they didn’t want any additional landscaping between their properties and the substation. Rather, they said, they prefer a view of open pastureland. Planning commissioners voted to keep

Congressional aide offers dialogue on veteran issues By Brian Fernandes
bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com
Rob Fleege, veterans liaison for U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis, recently updated members of American Legion Post 108 and other veterans about what the congressman is doing to address issues facing former soldiers. And, he gave the veterans a chance to share what was on their minds, during a Jan. 12 session at the Harvester United Methodist Church in Land O’ Lakes. Fleege, a veteran himself, briefed his fellow comrades on a number of issues being tackled by Bilirakis. One of the congressman’s chief efforts involves finding ways to prevent veteran suicide, Fleege said. “We’ve created a congressional working group whose sole purpose is to figure out veteran suicide,” he added. The group is made up of mental health experts from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) who have served in the military and can understand those they treat. The first part of the process is analyzing the Transition Assistance Program and what improvements could be made there. The program’s goal is to help returning troops to reintegrate back into civilian life. According to Veterans Affairs, anywhere from 11 percent to 20 percent of soldiers returning from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder during any given year. Bilirakis wants to help these individuals, but his office is equally invested in those who served in conflicts decades past – such as the Vietnam War. “Why are older veterans killing themselves?” Fleege asked. The congressman also is making efforts to pass the Blue Water Navy Act. The bill would grant health care and disability benefits to naval officers exposed to the Agent Orange toxin during the Vietnam War. The bill passed in the House last year, but failed to pass in the Senate. Bilirakis remains hopeful that there is bipartisan support to address veteran concerns, Fleege said. Attendees also had the chance to comment or ask questions about issues important
BRIAN FERNANDES
Rob Fleege, veterans liaison for U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis, spoke to former servicemen on Jan. 12 at the Harvester United Methodist Church, in Land O’ Lakes. His talk covered what the congressman is doing to address veterans’ issues.
to them. One issue that came up involved the current federal government shutdown. Hunter Knight Anstine is a former member of the U.S. Coast Guard and current commanding officer of American Legion Post 108. His son currently serves in the Coast Guard and is personally feeling the consequences of the shutdown. “There’s something fundamentally wrong when the fifth branch of the military, people who can’t just call in sick, are not getting paid,” the veteran said. Other members in the audience raised concerns about affordable housing and finding work. Fleege said Bilirakis is working with the Department of Urban Development — to address the housing concerns through the Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing program. This not only assists veterans in getting stable homes, but also pinpoints the issues that lead to homelessness, such as mental illness and substance abuse. “We’re going to have another job fair,” Fleege added.“This is a continuing initiative we have every year to get all the veterans in one spot and get services with companies that are hiring.”
The liaison also noted that through a veteran advisory committee, Bilirakis is seeking jobs for veterans that offer livable wages. When asked about the veterans who don’t qualify for VA services, Fleege mentioned the Mission Act. The act, passed in 2018, assists veterans in
getting adequate medical care through a civilian market when it is not provided by the VA. Fleege’s passion for assisting fellow veterans stems partially from personal experience. He served 18 months in Iraq as a sergeant, and has had personal experience with PTSD. He went back to school and received a master’s degree in public health and a master’s degree in social work, specializing in mental health. “I needed to figure out what happened to me,” Fleege said. “Getting this background in mental health started to peel back the layers of why I was crying in inappropriate times,” he said. Fleege decided to dedicate himself to working with other veterans to help them achieve a healthier life, and after he worked in Veterans Affairs for nine years, Bilirakis offered him the opportunity to advocate for former soldiers in the 12th congressional district. As the meeting concluded, Fleege invited anyone with questions or concerns to reach back to him. He also urged anyone struggling with PTSD to seek help from mental health organizations, such as the Veterans Alternative in Pasco County. Finally, he reminded his comrades: “We have charged ourselves, as veterans, to take care of our brothers and sisters.”

Pasco Fair marks 72nd year By Kevin Weiss
kweiss@lakerlutznews.com
The annual Pasco County Fair has delivered a family fun-filled time to fairgoers for more than seven decades, and it promises to do the same this year. The event’s 72nd year is set for Feb. 18 through Feb. 24, at the Pasco County Fairgrounds, 36722 State Road 52 in Dade City. “The Fair Association has been busy putting together what we feel like is the best fair that’s about to hit these grounds,”Tracy Thompson, the annual fair chairman and director, said, during a recent Greater Dade City Chamber of Commerce business breakfast meeting. The fair is expected to draw as many as 50,000 patrons this year. Since the very beginning, the fair’s primary purpose has been to promote youth in agriculture, as they show their steers, hogs, plants and more. Thompson noted the fair is particularly important to the community, as it teaches local kids responsibility, money management and other valuable lessons. “It’s just a great, all-around experience for life,”Thompson said. Aside from that, the fair offers plenty in the way of entertainment through one-of-akind shows and musical performances. One highlight figures to be Stevie Starr, “The Professional Regurgitator,” known for appearances on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent.” In his act, Starr, who’s from England, swallows coins, light bulbs, balloons, nails, billiard balls, dry sugar, lighter fluid and goldfish, and other items — and then, he regurgitates them. The Pasco Fair will mark Starr’s first appearance at any county or state fair, and he will perform throughout the week, Thompson said. “We’ve got some top-notch entertainment here…and (Starr’s) one that we’re really tickled over,”Thompson said. The fair also features another “America’s Got Talent” participant in the Fearless Flores Family, a stunt motorbike family from South Florida that features five generations of family performers. The daredevil family, also making their first Pasco Fair appearance, will perform what’s known as the “Globe of Death.” That stunt involves racing their motorcycles up, down and around a specially-built metal globe made of steel. Meanwhile, the fair’s bluegrass and gospel nights are returning by popular demand. The bluegrass show is headlined by Little

Roy and Lizzie. They are scheduled to perform on Feb. 20 at 6 p.m., in the Dan Cannon Auditorium. The gospel show is headlined by Jeff and Sheri Easter and The Down East Boys. That show will begin on Feb. 21 at 6 p.m., also in the Dan Cannon Auditorium. Other staples of the fair are back, too, including the Miss Heart of Pasco County Pageant and baby pageant, rodeo, karaoke, midway rides and games, and more. A brand-new twist is a kid’s karaoke contest, open to ages 8 to 17. Cash prizes will be offered to the top three finishers in each group (8 to 12 years old; 13 to 17 years old). The kid’s karaoke will take place on Feb. 24 at 2 p.m., at the Dan Cannon Auditorium. Elsewhere, the food court will be another draw for patrons throughout the week, with many longtime vendors returning to serve all types of cuisine. Thompson noted the Pasco Fair prides itself on having one of the best food courts in the fair industry. “We have the ‘best of the best.’ It’s not your run-of-the-mill food,”Thompson said. The fair will officially kick off with a parade in downtown Dade City on Feb. 18 at 11:30 a.m. That afternoon will feature a celebrity milk-off at the fairgrounds between Pasco County Commission Chairman Ron Oakley and former Commissioner Sylvia Young. Simply put, the event offers myriad options for fair-goers. “There’s something for everybody,” Thompson said. For more information about the fair, visit PascoCountyFair.com.

It’s not too late to protect yourself from the flu By B.C. Manion
Flu Symptoms
bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com
Ideally, the best time to get a flu shot is before flu season begins in October. But, it’s still not too late to protect yourself before flu season hits its peak, which is typically closer to February, said Dr. Melissa Wahba, an emergency room physician at St. Joseph’s Hospital-North, in Lutz. The most vulnerable populations are children under age 5, but especially under age 2; people over age 65; and, those with chronic medical conditions, such as asthma, diabetes and pregnant women,Wahba said. Protection is important, to avoid potentially tragic consequences of being infected by the virus, she said. “Influenza can certainly be a deadly virus and even if it is not life-threatening to yourself, contracting it likely means you’re going to pass it on to someone else, and it could be someone who falls into one of those high-risk categories,” she said. She continued: “So, making a choice of whether or not to be vaccinated is not really just reflective of impact on yourself. It will impact those around you. “That’s especially true if you are taking care of any of the patients in those high-risk populations.” Plus, she added:“Health care personnel, day care workers, people who are working in dialysis units — anyone who is working with those more vulnerable populations — they have an even greater responsibility to make sure that they’re being vaccinated.” There’s a common misconception that someone can get the flu by getting a flu shot. “That is not true,” the emergency department doctor said. “Patients can have side effects from the flu vaccine, but they’re extremely mild. Most commonly, they might have redness, soreness, tenderness or some swelling at the site of the injection. Fewer might actually get a low-grade fever, a headache, or feel a little bit achy.” It’s also important to know that it takes two weeks from the time you get the shot for it to take its full effect. “This year’s vaccine includes protection against Influenza A H1NI, Influenza A H3N2, and Influenza B, and certainly, we are by far seeing the most cases of H1NI,” the doctor said. “The vaccine is targeted directly against that particular subtype of Influenza A.The vaccine itself seems to be right on par with what we’re seeing clinically,”Wahba said. People sometimes say they have the flu, when they actually have a cold or a stom-
COURTESY OF ST. JOSEPH’S HOSPITAL-NORTH
Some people believe that getting a flu shot can cause them to get the flu, but that’s a misconception, said Dr. Melissa Wahba, an emergency department physician at St. Joseph’s Hospital-North, in Lutz.
Dr. Melissa Wahba, an emergency department physician at St. Joseph’s HospitalNorth, in Lutz, said it’s not too late to benefit from getting a flu shot. The peak of the season generally begins around February.
ach virus, she said. “Influenza is generally quite a bit worse than just a cold,” she said. If you think you have the flu, it’s important to keep away from other people, she said. In its early stages, a patient can go to ur-
gent care, or use an App, to get medical attention. When caught early enough, a doctor may be able to prescribe antiviral medication to help reduce the effects. There are times, though, when patients need to go to the emergency department, the doctor said. Adults should receive emergency care when: • The patient is having difficulty breathing, or experiencing rapid, shallow breathing • The patient isn’t able to drink • The patient is experiencing chest pain, abdominal pain, or confusion Babies and small children should receive emergency care when: • A child cannot drink fluids; a baby cannot drink his or her bottle • There’s a decrease in a child’s wet diapers • There’s a decrease in tear production when a child is crying She advises that patients pay close attention to their symptoms. “Sometimes in the course of influenza, patients will have an improvement in their symptoms, and then they will actually get worsening of symptoms with fever and increased cough. Those patients should definitely come to the hospital. They could be developing one of the complications that we see with influenza,”Wahba said. Even when the flu is not life-threatening, it still disrupts daily life, so the doctor rec-
Influenza (also known as flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness and, at times, can lead to death. Flu is different from a cold. Flu usually comes on suddenly. People who are sick with flu often feel some or all of these symptoms: • Fever* or feeling feverish/chills • Cough • Sore throat • Runny or stuffy nose • Muscle or body aches • Headaches • Fatigue (tiredness) Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults. *It’s important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever.
Reducing the impact Antiviral treatment, prescribed by a doctor, works best when started soon after flu illness begins. When treatment is started within two days of becoming sick with flu symptoms, antiviral drugs can lessen fever and symptoms, and shorten the time you are sick. They also may reduce the risk of complications, such as ear infections in children, respiratory complications requiring antibiotics, and hospitalization in adults. Source: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Help prevent the spread of flu • Get vaccinated • Wash your hands often, with soap and water (use an alcohol-based sanitizer if soap isn’t available) • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth • If you get sick, stay home until you are fever-free for at least 24 hours (that is, your fever is gone for at least 24 hours without the assistance of a fever-reducing medication) Source: The Florida Department of Health
ommends getting a flu shot to reduce the risk of becoming ill. “Truthfully, as long as the virus is circulating, there is benefit to being immunized,” Wahba said. “People who read this and go out and get vaccinated right away, will be protected before we hit peak season.”

I am feeling overwhelmed by all the things I have to do, and am losing focus on my goal to lose weight. What can I do to get back on track?
A.
If losing weight was your New Year’s resolution, no wonder you’re feeling frustrated. There is tons of research that proves that it takes three weeks for personal changes to take hold, whether it’s changing what you eat or exercising more. You are reading this column during the third week of January — which is right at the three-week mark of your New Year’s resolutions. So, stop beating yourself up for slipping, and acknowledge you’re not alone. You are simply experiencing the threeweek resistance mark. Get back on track by taking one small step that moves you closer to your goal. So right now, stop reading this paper, stand up and go for a walk. It may only be a 10- minute walk, but it’s something positive that you can do right now and feel good about. When you make yourself do the little things, it helps you be proactive to do the bigger things. When you come back from your walk, sit down and plan out your food for tomorrow. Being prepared by having the right foods on hand is essential to changing how you eat. You can do this. Set small challenges for yourself everyday, discipline yourself to achieve these goals, and you will be off on your road to success.

Exciting New Year At Asturia
T
here is much to look forward to this New Year at Asturia, the master-planned community in Odessa that is one of the most desired neighborhoods along the popular State Road 54 corridor in central Pasco County. After almost three years of development, Asturia is now in its third phase, having completed 300 homes and releasing another 100 lots to its builders. Hines, the developer behind Asturia, is looking forward to an exciting spring with several new model homes under way by its builders. Ryan Homes is celebrating the grand opening of Asturia’s first townhomes on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 11 a.m. Visitors will enjoy the festivities as they tour two beautifully decorated model homes. Both floor plans offer 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, 2car rear garages, and unique courtyards between the home and garage. Square footage is 1,580 in the Chopin model, and 1,740 square feet in the Haydn. Prices begin in the low $220s. “We are very excited to be offering townhomes in Asturia,” said Creighton Call, project director for Hines at Asturia. “Many families are looking for the convenience, affordability and low-maintenance that comes with the townhome lifestyle. We look forward to welcoming firsttime homebuyers coming out of apartments, and more families wanting to downsize their living space.” Upon completion, Ryan Homes will have 105 townhomes in Asturia,
all just a short walk to the community’s expansive Amenity Center. For families wanting to move soon, five quick move-in townhomes will be available. Asturia’s traditional homebuilders are award-winning Ashton Woods, David Weekley Homes and ICI Homes. Builders are offering homesites nestled near the community’s nature preserves, and will be opening new model homes this spring in Phase III. “We’re seeing a lot of pent-up demand for our traditional homes in Phase III, because of the outstanding reputation of our builders, and because some of the deepest and
most beautiful conservation lots available are located in Phase III,” said Call. David Weekley Homes, which has been building in Asturia since the community opened in 2016, has seven quick move-in homes available in a variety of one- and two-story floor plans and homesites. Prices begin in the low $300s. ICI Homes is Asturia’s other premium builder, and is known for its open floor plans and Floridalifestyle features, such as summer kitchen patios, open balconies, lots of windows and the ability to customize any floor plan. The builder has four move-in ready homes avail-
able, with prices beginning in the high $300s. Families with children often choose Asturia for the outstanding public schools its children are zoned to attend — Odessa Elementary, Seven Springs Middle and J.W. Mitchell High. All are top-ranked by the Pasco County School District. Another allure is Asturia’s unique amenity package, which includes a trail network, recreational parks and contemporarystyle clubhouse, with a resort-style pool and state-of-the art fitness center. Neighborhood parks boast a Kompan play structure, a GaGa Ball court, and open event lawns to foster imaginative play and healthy, family fun. Asturia’s system of picturesque walking trails and pocket parks feature bridges over sensitive land areas and trails that weave throughout the natural environment, resulting in one of Tampa Bay’s most sustainable, eco-friendly communities. The community is just five minutes from the Suncoast Parkway, with close proximity to U.S. 41, U.S. 19 and I-75. It encompasses 500 acres of the former Behnke Ranch, which under Hines’ vision and management, has become an award-winning blend of shopping, office space, luxury apartments, single-family homes and townhomes.

Cornerstone brings you safe, crystal clear water for your family Plus, refined water that prevents scaling and doubles the life of appliances
M
any people take for granted the water in their home — both working water used for taking showers and washing clothes, and drinking water for making coffee and ice cubes. It’s not until their showerheads become corroded with mineral build up, or their ice cubes look cloudy, do many families consider a water treatment and purification system for their home. Unfortunately, by the time they do, the damage often has already been done to home appliances, faucets and grout which have become pitted, scratched, stained and may even require replacement. The good news is that all of these symptoms of poor water quality can be resolved with a quality home water system that pays for itself in just a few years. Refined water also extends the life of a hot water heater because less sediment is deposited in the tank. Like many of her customers, Dana Spears, owner of Cornerstone Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electrical in Land O’ Lakes, also waited too long before installing a water treatment and purification system in her home. A wife and mother of five children, Dana and her husband, James, built a new home four years ago. “We didn't think to put in a water system them, and that was a huge mistake because today my beautiful, expensive kitchen and bathroom faucets are pitted and scratched, my grout is cracking and there is so much corrosion in my dishwasher that we need to replace it,” said Dana. Cornerstone’s Plumbing Department has always offered water treatment, but Dana found a real need to expand this area for her customers. “Not only did my family home
Why Refined Water? Pure, clean, fresh tasting water. The purification process removes nearly all of the contaminants in your city or well water and gives you a limitless supply of higher quality drinking water. Save money: Pure, crystal clear water from your faucet means you can stop buying bottled water for your home. No hard water spots and soap residue: Glassware comes straight from the dishwasher, crystal clear. The same goes for stemware and flatware. Soft skin after shaving and bathing: Rinses away all soap and cleaning products completely, leaving you with soft manageable skin and hair. Razorblades last longer and you can shave closer.
need a water system, but many of our customers were also inquiring about what system was best for their home,” said Dana. Dana and her team researched dozens of manufacturers and systems, and selected Westinghouse because of its effectiveness, efficiency and 10-year guarantee. “Westinghouse also offered Cornerstone exclusivity, which means we are the only plumbing company in the area that can sell their exceptional water systems,” said Dana. The Westinghouse Progressive Revolution Series works 24 hours a day delivering clean, soft working water to the entire house. Its refined water makes clothes and linens softer and brighter, and kitchen and bathroom faucets and showerheads become free of water spots, soap scum and scaling that restricts water flow. For drinking water, the Westinghouse system delivers fresh, purified water on demand from a special faucet installed at the kitchen sink. Its technology removes nearly all of the contaminants in city water,
and leaves nothing but pure, clean, fresh tasting water. “If you’re buying bottled water, you can stop. And if you’re relying on faucet or refrigerator filters, this gives your family a much higher level of purity,” said Dana. “Essentially, you get unlimited bottled water — just think how much money you will save because you will no longer need to buy bottled water!” As sediment builds up, it doesn’t take long for water coming from a faucet that is not treated first by a purification system to taste like minerals and even look a bit cloudy. Many families spend $20 or more on bottled water for their family a week, Dana explains. Cornerstone also installs water treatment and purification systems for homes on well water. Well water is tested for iron, bacteria and other elements, and the system custom designed to meets the specific needs of a family’s well. The Westinghouse system can be installed same day or next in most homes with city water, especially in newer homes that are pre-plumbed for a water treatment system. Homes
Water becomes a powerful solvent - all by itself: Refined water will lift stains and clean surfaces, plus eliminate tough stains brought on by your old harsh water. Refined water also reduces the time it takes to clean your home, and also the need for harsh and sometimes toxic cleaners.
on a well may take up to two weeks for the testing and installation to be completed Cornerstone’s licensed plumbers are trained by Westinghouse and are certified to install its systems. Every installation is different, and all are integrated with the home’s water system. All work is guaranteed and under warranty for a full year. Discover Your Dream Community With Cardel Homes Private communities in Lutz and Land O’ Lakes with no CDD
I
f your New Year’s dream is to build a new home on a beautiful conservation lot in a small, private community with no CDD fees, Cardel Homes gives you two exceptional choices. The first is Oakwood Reserve in Lutz on Clement Road, located just 10 minutes from USF and 25 minutes to downtown Tampa. Clement Road is one of Lutz’s most idyllic rural roads, tucked between Livingston Avenue and Hannah Road. This unique community has magnificent, mature trees and will be home to just eight families, with lots ranging from 1 to 1.55 acres. Land O’ Lakes is home to another unique Cardel Homes community— the Enclave at Lake Padgett. This secluded, gated community of just eight Cardel homesites has convenient access off Land O’ Lakes Boulevard (U.S. 41), just two miles north of State Road 54. All homes in the Enclave will back on to a natural lagoon that flows into Lake Padgett, and can be permitted for docks that are large enough for fishing, waterski or pontoon boats. “It’s almost unheard of to find new home construction on Lake Padgett, said Brian Phillips, vice president of sales and marketing at Cardel Homes. “This is an incredible opportunity for families wanting waterfront living on one of Pasco’s largest lakes known for fabulous water skiing and excellent fishing. Home prices begin in the low $500s at both Oakwood Reserve and the Enclave at Lake Padgett. Because of the limited number of lots available, Phillips expects both communities to sell out quickly. One home site at Oakwood Reserve has already been sold, and an inventory home is being built on a second site, leaving only six remaining homesites in this unique community. This inventory home will be a 3,939-square-foot Henley model, with

5 bedrooms, 4 baths and a 3-car garage. Features and upgrades include a 26 x 23 great room with 12-foot ceiling, 16-foot sliding glass doors that open to an extended covered lanai, upgraded kitchen cabinetry, quartz countertops, upgraded wood plank tile, tray ceiling in the master bedroom and foyer, coffered ceiling in the master bathroom, mosaic master shower floor tile, and an upper level with a large bonus room and fifth bedroom. Priced in the low $700s, Oakwood Reserve’s inventory home will be ready this Spring for a family looking to move, before the start of the 20192020 school year. Minimum homes sizes in Oakwood Reserve begin at 2,507 square feet, and at 3,000 square feet in the Enclave at Lake Padgett. The Henley plan is available in both communities, and is Cardel’s largest and most popular floorplan. “The Henley offers our biggest great room and bonus room, said Phillips. “At almost 4,000 square feet,
it’s a lot of house for the money, and one of the best values we offer. For those wanting to build their home and select their options, interior colors and finishes, Cardel Homes is currently offering a 50 percent discount at its design center, up to $50,000. “This is one of our most generous discounts ever, and we’re excited to be offering it to welcome in the New Year, said Phillips. Cardel also has an inventory home at the Enclave at Lake Padgett — the elegant one-story St. Lucia, which is 3,336 square feet with 4 bedrooms, 3 baths and a 3-car garage. This one-story beauty boasts 12foot ceilings, a den off the entry, formal dining room with coffered ceiling, expansive great room, huge bonus room and a master suite with a sitting area and private lanai at the back of the house. Interior features include white cabinetry, quartz countertops, wood-plank tile throughout and tray ceilings in the

foyer, bonus room and master bedroom. The home sits on a private wooded lot, and features a large front porch and covered lanai in the back. An oversized dock is just steps away from the backyard, and is perfect to dock a boat and enjoy the natural waterfront view. This fabulous inventory home, including its waterfront dock, is selling for $679,000. “This St. Lucia is the best of both worlds, said Phillips “You can enjoy all the recreation that Lake Padgett has to offer, without the boat noise and traffic directly in your backyard. The unique communities of Oakwood Reserve and the Enclave at Lake Padgett offer families the most desired locations in suburban Tampa. Residents can enjoy beautiful conservation and waterfront views, acre-plus homesites and privacy in exclusive communities without CDD fees. Asturia, Bexley and FishHawk Are Home To ICI Homes
I
CI Homes, one of Florida’s most acclaimed builders, is building new homes in three of Tampa Bay’s most desirable communities — Asturia in Odessa, Bexley in Land O’ Lakes and FishHawk in Lithia. All are master-planned communities with beautiful homes sites, excellent schools and expansive amenities that promote an active lifestyle. They are conveniently located close to major transportation arteries for quick access to downtown Tampa, MacDill AFB, the Westshore business district and area beaches. Because so many families are currently buying homes while the economy is booming and interest rates remain low, ICI Homes is building inventory homes in all three communities, with several homes ready now. “A lot of families have been waiting for Phase III to open because of our pristine homesites with conservation views and affordable pricing,” said Leah Turner, sales manager for ICI Homes. “We’re seeing lots of firstand second-time buyers because they love Asturia’s affordability, convenient location and outstanding amenities.” ICI Homes in Phase III begin in the low $300s. The popular 4-bedroom, 3-bath Costa Mesa floor plan is one of the builder’s models. This 2,565 squarefoot, one-story home brings together the gathering room, gourmet kitchen and dining room in one expansive space that incorporate lots of windows to bring in natural light and sunlight. ICI Homes has 38 homesites available in Phase III, and over a dozen distinctive floor plans. The builder also has a few homesites remaining in the Asturia’s almost-completed Phase II, including three inventory homes and its Serena model home.
ICI Homes’ award-winning model, the Shenandoah, is located in FishHawk Ranch and is a two-time grand showcase winner in the Parade of Homes.
BEXLEY For families looking for a new home in Land O’ Lakes, this is the last chance to buy an ICI Home in Bexley, an award-winning development by Newland Communities, located just east of Asturia along the State Road 54 corridor. ICI Homes has permitted and is beginning construction on its three remaining homes in Bexley. The Costa Mesa, which is being built now, is 2,565 square feet and features 4 bedrooms, 3 baths and a 3-car garage. Another inventory home is the slightly smaller Egret VII, at 2,512 square feet, with 4 bedrooms, 3 baths and a 2-car garage. Both are very open plans with lots of windows and natural lighting.
FISHHAWK In the south Hillsborough community of FishHawk, ICI Homes is building new homes in WestLake — one of the last areas being developed in this master-planned community in Lithia. WestLake is an enclave of 50
homes, with just 15 homesites remaining. Lots are uniquely positioned to take advantage of lake views and to protect massive oak trees and other mature trees. ICI Homes has two Acadia inventory homes — a 4-bedroom, 3-bath home open plan with quartz countertops and wood flooring. The Acadia begins in the mid $400s. FishHawk Ranch is also home to ICI Homes’ award-winning model, the Shenandoah —a two-time grand showcase winner in the Parade of Homes sponsored by the Tampa Bay Builders Association. This unique plan is over 3,000 square feet and includes a detached garage with studio apartment. It is available on a leaseback option for $1.1 million. FishHawk Ranch is a close-knit community that includes five preschools, three elementary schools, two middle schools and a high school all inside or within 1.5 miles of the development. Amenities include over 25 miles of paved nature trails, including the
Lake House, Central Park pools and Born to Run Dog Park.
BUILD ON YOUR OWN LOT With so much land available in Pasco and south Hillsborough, many families want to build a new home on land they already own. ICI Homes is one of the few semi-custom builders to offer a “Build On Your Lot” program. “Many buyers with their own lot enjoy working with ICI Homes because they can easily customize our floor plans, and walk through our models to get a real feel for what their new home will be like,” said Turner. Since ICI Homes was established in 1980, the company has built over 4,000 single-family homes in Florida, including the Tampa area, and has earned several prestigious awards for design and innovation. The sales center for Asturia and Bexley is at 15134 Aviles Parkway in Odessa, (813) 359-0264. In FishHawk Ranch, the sales center is at 13925 Lake FishHawk Drive in Lithia, (813) 217-5200.

ant to elevate your home décor in the new year? Whether you’re going for farmhouse style or mid-century modern décor, make a statement in every room, even the most neglected spaces. From the laundry room to the garage, to your home gym and game room, these easy and simple ideas from the design experts at Hunter Fan Company will add comfort and beauty to your home.

While this space is one of the most used on a weekly basis, it’s often forgotten in terms of décor and style. Simple touches, like matching laundry bins, wall art and coordinated shelving can really change the ambiance and help organize laundry day chaos. While this space has a ton of potential, it also comes with its share of challenges. Many laundry rooms tend to be cramped and get steamy easily. Adding a circulating element, like a ceiling fan, can remedy this woe and make chores more pleasant. Fans come in smaller options as small as 36-inches - and can seamlessly coordinate with your updated space.
THE GAME ROOM Game rooms are often the most aesthetically neglected rooms of the home. Often a culmination of mismatched and hand-me-down furniture, the game room is most likely in need of some tender love and care. Some new pillow covers for the couch and an added cowhide rug can provide a refreshing update to this room. Consider adding an accent wall in a bold color and replacing those outdated band posters for a grown-up look.
THE GARAGE For many people, the garage is the first interior space they encounter after a long day. Unfortunately, it’s also often the dumping ground for old tools, chil-
dren’s toys and items with no place to call home. Built-in storage can help with organization, and adding a layer of colored floor protectant will make your garage seem more polished and presentable. If you use the garage as a workshop, the introduction of a cool breeze can revitalize strenuous home projects and ensure proper ventilation. Check out ceiling fan design options that are made to stand up to the elements.
THE HOME GYM When it comes to getting in shape, motivation is key, and having a beautiful, enjoyable space while working towards your goals can make all the difference. Get a better workout by updating your home gym with new mats, colorful dumbbells and a brand-new sound system. Avoid overheating with the latest smart tech fan that can be controlled from your mobile device or an automated virtual assistant, so you can be comfortable without interrupting your treadmill session. For greater comfort, health and use of your home at the start of the new year, consider how you can incorporate beautiful and easy interior design elements into every room. Courtesy StatePoint Media
Upgrade Your Kitchen to Cook Like a Professional Chef
M
any millennials are buying their first home in a marketplace that is more challenging than the one their parents encountered when they bought their first home. Of course, cooking like a chef at home requires talent and practice. But there’s no doubt about it -- having the right culinary tools, appliances and prep space is essential, too. To upgrade your kitchen so that you can cook like a chef, consider the following:
PREP LIKE A PRO Save time and energy, and get a cleaner cut by maintaining your knives. Properly clean, dry and store knives directly after use and regularly sharpen them. Whether that’s on a magnetic strip on the wall or an in-drawer organizer, the best options will allow you to see all your knives at once, so you can reach for the correct one. Precision slicing? You may also wish to invest in a mandolin. Bake a lot? Consider ditching the measuring cups by using a digital scale instead. You’ll get faster, more accurate results. And the bonus of less to clean up.
COOK LIKE A PRO When it comes to ensuring that there are no limits to what you can do in the kitchen, it’s all about having top-notch appliances. Check January 23, 2019
out free-standing ranges. These appliances can offer chef-quality features, such as a removable griddle, high BTU brass burners and a built-in warmer drawer to keep cooked food at an ideal temperature for serving. Free-standing ranges can come in a 36-inch single or unique double oven configuration, as well as 40-inch and 48-inch sizes with double ovens. The electric ovens feature multi-function cooking options and included rotisserie accessory. Ranges can be found in stainless steel and matte graphite colors, and you can get a professional-style cooking experience while maintaining the sleek design of your kitchen.
MOVE LIKE A PRO Do an audit of your current cooking habits, bearing in mind the layout of your kitchen and the organization of go-to ingredients. Are you expending time and energy walking all the way around the kitchen island just to get to the fridge? Are you spending too much time poking around for a particular spice or oil? The optimal flow in your kitchen space will allow for more intuitive food preparation and help you stay light on your feet. Want to cook like a professional? Update your kitchen accordingly. A few upgrades can help you become a better chef. Courtesy StatePoint Media

Easy Ways to Save Water and Money
T
he Southwest Florida Water Management District is offering six easy ways to prepare your meals without running up your water bill. Water plays a role in everything from food preparation to the cleanup process. Here’s how to incorporate water conservation into your preparations: • Defrost frozen foods in the refrigerator or the microwave instead of running hot water over them. • Rinse vegetables and fruits in a sink or pan filled with water instead of under running water. This water can then be reused to water houseplants. A running faucet can use up to 4 gallons per minute. • When washing dishes by hand, fill one sink or basin with soapy
water and fill the rinsing sink onethird to one-half full. Avoid letting the water run continuously in the rinsing sink. • Select the proper size pans for cooking. Large pans require more cooking water than may be necessary. • Scrape food scraps into the garbage can or a composting bin, rather than rinsing them into the sink’s garbage disposal. A garbage disposal uses up to 4.5 gallons of water per minute. • Run your dishwasher only when you have a full load. Dishwashers use between 7 gallons and 12 gallons per load. For more water conservation tips, visit the District’s website at WaterMatters.org/conservation.

Mattamy Opens Second Townhome Community In Lutz Avea Pointe has superb location and schools
T
here’s more good news from Mattamy Homes for families looking for affordable new construction in Lutz that offers excellent schools and one of the best locations in Tampa Bay. Avea Pointe is a new townhome community located off Van Dyke Road on Lakeshore Drive. It is directly across from Lakeshore Preserve — Mattamy Homes’ very successful townhome community of 102 homes, which is closing out sales after opening in the fall of 2017. Only one home remains — a 3-bedroom, 2.5-bath well-appointed Ormond model home. “The demand for our townhomes in Lakeshore Preserve was so incredible that we are very happy to be offering families more townhomes with the same great location,” said Kathleen Dec, marketing manager for Mattamy Homes. Avea Pointe will begin sales to the public on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 10 a.m., with the first residents expected to move into their new home in late spring. The community will offer amenities that will be completed later this year, including a resortstyle pool, cabana, sun deck and tot lot. At completion, Avea Pointe will have 224 homes. The gated community will offer three spacious floor plans designed very much like single-family homes, incorporating large open kitchens, optimized living spaces and 2-car garages. Avea Pointe offers very distinctive plans— the Santa Rosa at 1,913 square feet with 3 bedrooms and 2.5 baths, with an owner’s suite on the first level; the Sebring is an interior unit with 2,230 square feet and 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths; and the Venice at 2,574 square feet with 4 bedrooms (including a first-floor bedroom) and 3 baths. All homes feature 2-car
Excellent schools are the other reason Mattamy’s Lutz townhomes are so much in demand. This location is zoned to some of Hillsborough County’s best schools — Steinbrenner High, Martinez Middle and Schwarzkopf Elementary. All are located less than 3 miles away at the public school complex on Lutz Lake Fern Road. In addition, charter school Sunlake Academy of Math is less than a mile away.
LAKEVIEW AT CITRUS PARK
garages and covered lanais. Base prices of these townhomes are anticipated to begin in the low $300s, and come in three attractive exteriors — West Indies, French Country and Craftsman. “We offer some of the most spacious townhome floor plans in the market, and their unique designs meet the needs of first-time homebuyers, families with children, empty-nesters and retirees,” said Dec. Avea Pointe’s home designs can be experienced by visiting model homes at Lakeshore Preserve (direct-
ly across Van Dyke Road) and other Mattamy communities in Citrus Park, Oldsmar and Riverview. Mattamy’s Lutz communities are just minutes from St. Joseph’s Hospital-North, and are convenient to shopping, dining and entertainment in Carrollwood, Lutz, Land O’ Lakes and Wesley Chapel. Their close proximity to the Veterans Expressway is an easy commute to Tampa, the airport and area beaches. “Our location is one of the main reasons our homes at Lakeshore Preserve sold so quickly,” said Dec.
It’s only been six months since Mattamy Homes opened Lakeview at Citrus Park — its gated townhome community off Ehrlich Road at the Veterans Expressway — and already 23 townhomes have been sold. “This is one of the prettiest and most convenient locations in the north Tampa area,” said Dec. “Our homeowners love being less than 2 miles from Westfield Citrus Park Mall, and their easy access to downtown Tampa just 15 miles away.” Mattamy Homes found a perfect location that overlooks Gant Lake at the end of Tom Fuller Road, which gives resident access to the lake for fishing, kayaking and paddle boarding from its community pier. Other amenities include a children’s playground. Lakeview at Citrus Park has three model homes that will open in early February. Upon completion, it will have 124 townhomes, ranging from 1,670 to 2,620 square feet, and offering 2 to 4 bedrooms, 2.5 to 4 baths, and 1- or 2-car garages. Mattamy Homes is the largest privately owned homebuilder in North America, with a nearly 40-year history of operations across the United States and Canada. Every year, Mattamy helps 7,000 families realize their dream of home ownership. Visit MattamyHomes.com for more information, or call (813) 580-7303.

Encouraging a better environment Members of the GFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club visited the Covanta Recycling Facility in Spring Hill, on a tour organized by Lonna Vizzari, club conservation chair. On the tour, the group learned a great deal about the recycling process and the positive benefits to the environment resulting from responsible recycling. A Covanta staffer, left, stands alongside the woman’s club members outside the facility.
Pasco County to discuss brick paver rules The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report
Pasco County is considering changes to its land development code to provide standards for brick paver driveways and sidewalks connected to the county’s right of way. The Pasco County Commission voted at its last meeting to direct county planning staff to prepare to conduct public hearings on the issue before the Pasco County Planning Commission, and then before them for a final decision. Denise Hernandez, the county’s zoning administrator, said the issue will be placed on the Planning Commission’s Jan. 24 agenda, and then will be on the county’s agenda on Feb. 5, and again on Feb. 15. County Commissioner Kathryn Starkey expressed support, but also voiced a concern. “I’m all in favor in this, but there is an issue that the citizens in my district have brought to my attention, and that is that you can take out all of your landscaping and landscape your whole front yard in paver bricks, and it doesn’t count against any restrictions where you have to leave 20 percent permeable. “We don’t count paver bricks as nonper-
meable, so you can have paver bricks and no landscaping. I do want to see that get fixed, Starkey said. Hernandez responded:“These sections of the land development code talk specifically about connections to the county’s right of way. Addressing Starkey’s concern would require addressing a different part of the code, Hernandez said. Pasco County Commissioner Jack Mariano noted that his only concern is that over time, the pavers tend to settle. “I worry about how are you going to regulate that they maintain them. You’re going to get some depressions. What’s going to be the trigger point that you get them out there and they do maintenance? How are you going to monitor that? Mariano asked. Hernandez responded that the proposed language addresses maintenance responsibilities, that specific materials must be used and the sidewalks must comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act regulations. Will Poon, an engineer with Pasco County, said the homeowner is responsible, and if there’s a maintenance need the homeowner doesn’t fix, the county has the right to restore it to a concrete sidewalk.

OPIOIDS AND NARCAN
Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Nursing and Annenberg School of Communication have created a seven-minute virtual reality Narcan training session that a recent pilot study showed was as effective as in-person simulation training for health care providers. Narcan, the FDA-approved nasal spray available without a prescription, can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose in less than five minutes. Most people don’t know about it or are unfamiliar with how to use it or what to do after it is administered. With this new virtual reality tool, Penn researchers hope to change that. For more information, please visit PennToday.upenn.edu, and search “virtual reality.”

Pasco County names new emergency management director The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report
Andrew Fossa, Pasco County’s former deputy fire chief of administration, has been named the county’s new emergency management director. Fossa has been with the fire rescue department for 28 years. “I decided it was time for a career change,” he told the Pasco County Commission, when County Administrator
Dan Biles announced Fossa’s selection to fill the position vacated by Kevin Guthrie. Guthrie previously led the county’s emergency management response and accepted a new position in Tallahassee. While announcing Fossa’s new role, Biles also said that he wants to take a closer look at the departments making up the county’s emergency response structure, to see if there are any changes in that structure that would improve management in that area.

Pasco wants another member on board
The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report
The Pasco County Commission would like greater representation on the Tampa Bay Area Regional Transit Authority (TBARTA), whether that be another member from the county, or from one of the municipalities within the county. Commissioner Mike Moore expressed that desire during a recent commission meeting, and his colleagues agreed. They voted to authorize Commission Chairman Ron Oakley to draft a letter to send to the county’s legislative representa-
tives, to see if they can help make that happen. The TBARTA Board is involved in addressing the region’s transportation needs. Its board is made up of gubernatorial appointees; representatives from Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco and Pinellas counties; representatives from the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority and the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority; representatives from the cities of St. Petersburg and Tampa; and, non-voting representatives from the Florida Department of Transportation, District 7 and District 1.

First National Bank of Pasco (FNBP) is working with Pasco County Schools to award ArtsFirst grants, to give music, art, theater and dance teachers the resources needed to bring out a student’s inner artist. The grants are intended to support and enhance educational opportunities for fine arts students in Pasco County public schools. Each quarter, teachers submit grant applications to the district’s art leadership team, which then are reviewed and awarded by an FNBP panel of bank, business and civic leaders. The applications define how recipients of a grant will use the funds to encourage higher educational standards, as well as challenge and motivate students. Grant applications are due at the end of each quarter, and will be awarded based upon the grant’s likelihood of improving student achievement and opportunities. Examples of what awarded grants may be used to support are: • classroom supplies and/or materials • clinician, guest speaker, performer or guest artist • dance room equipment, supplies and/or costumes • fees associated with play production (writes, costumes, props, etc.) • field trips to fine arts related events • musical instruments, art equipment, sound equipment, etc. • supplemental materials that are not adopted or funded by the district or school • teacher conference fee if the teacher can show how the information learned will be used in the classroom • T-shirts for special events that promote higher achievement • special projects Parents and other community supporters can help fuel the program funding when an account is opened at an FNBP branch. Pasco County public school fine arts teachers interested in applying, can submit an application at the end of each quarter, by sending the grant application to: Thomas Viking, fine arts program coordinator, tviking@pasco.k12.fl.us.

The five branches of the county’s tax office intends to distribute donations to the troops and their families. “Mr. Fasano supports our men and women in uniform,” Giordano said. “He wanted to do something to show that this community is behind those individuals.” On Day 1 of collections, Tom Kliebert was at the tax collector’s office to offer support. “I’m always looking for things I can do to help out the military,” the Vietnam veteran said.“I really appreciate what they do to protect our country.” The Wesley Chapel resident went directly to the grocery store to purchase donations when he learned online about the tax collector’s effort. Debby Palmer, also of Wesley Chapel, received the notification through email and also wanted to help. “I feel like I’ve been very blessed in my life, so I try to contribute where I can,” she said. She brought in four bags of groceries to her local tax office. The tax collector’s five branches began collecting donations on Jan. 16 and accumulated more than $2,300 in cash, 91 bags of groceries and more than a dozen gift cards within the first two days. (For addresses of branches, go to PascoTaxes.com). “Obviously this has touched a nerve in the community,” Giordano said. He characterized the community’s generosity as being “incredible.” Father and Son Love Ministries, at 24156 Foggy Ridge Parkway, in Lutz, also is offering a helping hand. Pastor C.J. Johns heads the Lutz church, which has opened its doors to federal workers and their families every Friday. Church staff and volunteers, from noon to 3 p.m. on Fridays, will give out bagged lunches, plus supplies of food for a week, for those requesting it. The church also understands that some families won’t be able to afford to drive to the church, so it is willing to deliver food boxes to homes if they provide 48 hours’ notice, the pastor said. Before the shutdown, the church was already operating a food drive and now has prepared for a larger turnout. “We’re committed to helping our community,” Johns said.“It’s a need that has risen, and we’re going to do whatever we can to help ease the turmoil.” Publix has supported the church’s efforts, Johns said, noting the grocery chain recently donated surplus items from the holidays. Besides providing food, the church also offers free clothing and personal hygiene items. It also understands that children need relief, too, so the church will make toys, birthday cakes and cupcakes available, the pastor said. The church plans to keep the drive open a month after the government reopens to help workers get back on their feet. Restored Hope, at 13703 17th St., in Dade City, also is committed to assisting federal workers for as long as necessary. The nonprofit organization welcomes workers to stop by its center on Mondays, Wednesdays or Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Federal employees are asked to bring identification or their last pay stub to verify their status. The organization’s pantry room is filled with nonperishable items and clothing. Many items were leftover donations given by Metropolitan Ministries over the holidays, said Doreen Kennard, bookkeeper of Restored Hope. Knowing there was surplus in storage, she

During the federal government shutdown, Pasco County Utilities also is working to help federal employees, who are also PCU customers, develop an action plan to ensure continuation of services. Pasco County Utilities will waive late fees and provide extensions for utility bills due by any federal employee who is on furlough or is required to work without compensation, as long as supporting documentation is provided. Customers in need of assistance should call (813) 235-6012 during regular business hours. Other acts of kindness can be seen throughout the Tampa Bay Area. Tampa Bay Salvage, at 37832 Meridian Ave., in Dade City, is accepting donations of food and personal hygiene items at its Dade City and Palm Harbor offices. KUMQUAT, from page 1A “It was first started by a group of folks here in town that put a little festival together on the courthouse lawn with a few dozen vendors,” Moore recalled. Now, both vendors and visitors come from across the country to attend the festival, which showcases Old Florida’s charm in a quaint downtown that boasts a historic courthouse, shops and restaurants. Frimmel said it took a trip out of state for her to realize that the Kumquat Festival is a nationally recognized event. “It’s something that’s known in a broader sense than just our local community,” she said. The crowds have increased through the years, and the festival has added more offerings for patrons, especially for the children, Frimmel said. This year’s kids’ area will include bounce houses, pony rides, face painting and other activities. There’s a $20 entry fee, for those wishing to register their car for the all-day car show contest. Downtown restaurants will be open for business, and there will be food trucks at
the event, too. The musical lineup includes Melissa Lee Zenker, the Strawberry Express Cloggers and the Calvary Assembly of Dade City. Besides doling out tote bags, AdventHealth will offer health information and pamphlets detailing upcoming hospital events. “My team has a great time at the event interacting with the guests,” Frimmel said. Besides greeting and meeting new visitors, Frimmel is ready to direct them to the various attractions the festival has to offer. And, she’s looking forward to reuniting with friends that she’s come to know through festivals in the past, she said. Festival admission and parking are free. Shuttle buses will transport guests from the Pasco County Fairgrounds to Downtown Dade City – at no charge. Proceeds from the festival benefit The Greater Dade City Chamber of Commerce and the nonprofit organizations that help put the event together. Registration for the car show can be done at 8 a.m., in Downtown Dade City, or online at RonnieSetsers.com. For additional information, call the chamber at (352) 567-3769, or email JMoors@DadeCityChamber.org.

Zephyrhills High names ‘Alan Reed Court’ By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com
A
little more than a year after naming its football field after legendary coach Tom Fisher, Zephyrhills High School has named the school’s gymnasium floor after longtime varsity boys’ basketball coach Alan Reed. From now on, anyone stepping on the gym floor will be walking on “Alan Reed Court” — which has been visibly stenciled along the sidelines. A formal dedication ceremony for Reed was held Jan. 18 — an evening that coincided with a Bulldogs defeat of crosstown rival Pasco High, 61-34. Reed, 71, served as Zephyrhills boys’ basketball coach for a total of 16 years — in four separate stints — 1975 to 1979; 1981 to 1986; 2006 to 2010; and, 2014 to 2016. During that time he became — and still is — the school’s all-time winningest basketball coach. His teams claimed two district titles and a final four appearance. He was conference basketball coach of the year three times. His coaching efforts goes beyond hoops, too. In total, he’s been involved with Zephyrhills athletics for more than 35 years, also coaching volleyball, track, football and softball. To this day, he remains a volunteer coach at the school. In that role, Reed spends countless hours with players in the weight room, scouting, and of course, offering strategy advice when broached. “It beats sitting on the couch,” Reed said of volunteering.“It keeps me busy. I love the game. It’s what I do. It’s who I am. It’s my whole life.” Before embarking on a lengthy coaching career, Reed played high school basketball in Pennsylvania and then for Florida Southern College in Lakeland. In-between, Reed spent four years in the U.S. Air Force where he reached the rank of sergeant, and also played hoops.

Alan Reed was presented with a basketball career memento signed by former teammates, players and coaches who attended the surprise, special event.
At Zephyrhills, Reed’s most successful basketball teams came 40 years apart from each other. In his second season — 1976 — the Bulldogs went 21-7 and won a district title. Fast forward to 2016 — his final year as a head basketball coach —and that squad went 27-5 and reached the 5A state semifinals. It also marked the program’s first final four appearance since 1966. There were many other memorable seasons scattered throughout, too. Said Reed:“There’s a lot of ’em. I had a lot of special teams that didn’t have good winning records, but were much better at
Peterson will remain on staff as assistant coach for the Saint Leo beach volleyball program, according to a Saint Leo athletics news release. Skoch is a former club volleyball player at Penn State, Memphis and Oklahoma State universities. He holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in statistics.
KUMC GOLF CLASSIC The 14th annual Keystone United Methodist Church Golf Classic is set for March 30 at Silver Dollar Golf Club, 12711 Silver Dollar Drive in Odessa. The four-person scramble will begin with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start. The cost is $65 per player. the end of the road (season) than the beginning.” Yet, Reed’s biggest contributions to the school is more than just wins and losses, Zephyrhills athletic director Bruce Cimorelli said. “The guy knows his basketball,” Cimorelli said,“but, he’s just a really good influence on the kids — teaching them work ethic, being on time, those sorts of things.” Reed’s impact was undoubtedly apparent in the welcoming he received at the pregame dedication. Dozens of former players and coaches — as well as a handful of Reed’s former team-
mates — joined hundreds of Bulldogs fans in congratulating Reed and giving him a rousing ovation when the gymnasium floor was officially named for him. For Reed, the special event was “totally unexpected.” “I can’t even put it into words,” Reed said.“I love this community. I love this high school. It’s just an honor.” In that group of cheering attendees was Academy at the Lakes varsity football and basketball coach Shawn Brown, who once served as an assistant junior varsity basketball coach for Reed at Zephyrhills and also as a football coach at Stewart Middle School. “He was straight old school,” Brown, who has won back-to-back eight-man state football titles at the Academy, said, describing Reed. “He was good with adapting to the new style of everything, but he was strict on his ways and his philosophy. That never wavered. When he did something, he did it that way. “I thought one thing he did really good was he always invested everything with the team and the community. He made sure the kids always had team shoes, uniforms. It was always a top-of-the-line type program.” Brown added the Zephyrhills hoops coach is “definitely a person I learned a lot from.” “I run some basketball drills that I learned from him — a couple of different plays I stole from him,” Brown said, with a hearty chuckle. Meanwhile, the renaming of the hoops court comes at a good time for the Bulldogs’ boys squad, which stands at 12-4 overall and 8-2 in district play, as of Jan. 21. Solid record and all, it didn’t keep Reed from giving an honest assessment of the roster he volunteers with each day. “We’re not playing to our potential,” Reed said while the Bulldogs sported a 31-17 halftime lead over Pasco. “We’re struggling a little bit in a lot of areas. We just haven’t put it all together yet. We’ve got some good players, some good kids. We have a lot of inexperience…so they’re still catching up.”

eople of all ages headed to the ninth annual Pigz in Z’Hills BBQ & Blues Festival to sample some ribs, barbecue chicken or pulled pork — and get their fill of the blues. The scent of barbecue filled the air, Benny the Pig made the rounds and people sported pig hats — as they strolled around the Zephyrhills Community Venue, at 5200 Airport Road. Some barbecue chefs traveled from far-off places to take part in a competition involving about 60 teams who vied for bragging rights and prizes, and a chance to advance to the World Food Championship. Besides being able to enjoy barbecue, event-goers could check out items being offered by various vendors and could listen to blues musicians. There was a car show and an aviation show, too. Proceeds benefit community organizations, such as the YMCA, and for scholarships for Zephyrhills High School students.
It wasn’t all beef and pork barbecue as Gil Horn, of College Park, Georgia, prepared a large Paella as a side dish to go with the rib and barbecue plates cooked up by barbecue cooks and food concessionaires.
The Ellie Lee Band was among the lineup of bands performing at the ninth annual Pigz in Z’Hills BBQ & Blues Festival. Other bands playing were the Dave Shepard Band, Chuck Riley’s All Stars, The Bird Tribe and headliner Damon Fowler.
Zain Nensey, of Zephyrhills, wears a pig hat in his booth at the festival. Nensey, along with Kay Chenoweth, of New Tampa, were promoting the business for new clients this tax season. Suncoast Credit Union handed out hundreds of orange pig hats at the festival.
Jerry Newell, of Zephyrhills, had his own pig hat, which he wore to the festival.
Smoke emanates from the grill, as Edwin Alvarez, of Kissimmee, prepares chicken on a stick, which is called Pincho. Alvarez and his boss, Luis Merced, of Largo, were preparing food for patrons at the barbecue festival.

Help sought to count the LOCAL WILDLIFE homeless in Hillsborough The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report
The Tampa Hillsborough Homeless Initiative is seeking 500 volunteers to help in its “2019 Point in Time Count” in Hillsborough County. The annual count helps to provide a snapshot of the homeless population, which in turn helps determine their needs. The Tampa Hillsborough Homeless Initiative’s count will take place Feb. 28, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. The count is done is partnership with Hillsborough County and the City of Tampa. It is a systematic plan, in which volunteers help compile the information needed
to provide a snapshot in time — by counting homeless residents throughout Hillsborough County. Volunteers will be deployed in two shifts — from 7 a.m. to noon and from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. They will be fanning out to cover areas of Brandon, downtown Tampa, Plant City, Ruskin, Town 'N Country, West Tampa, Westshore, and the University Area. If anyone under the age of 18 wishes to volunteer, he or she must be in high school and must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian throughout the entire volunteer shift. For more information, call (813) 2236115.
Sharing play space Donna Peacock and her family have lived in Wesley Chapel for 30 years, and gopher tortoises have made a home in their backyard. When Gigi, the Peacocks’ 19-month-old Chorkie, joined the family, Gigi had to learn to live within the tortoise habitat. When Gigi wants to play, the tortoise will give a warning hiss, retreat into his shell and down into the underground burrow.

Give your money a raise Make your money work harder by earning higher interest rates. Talk to a banker for more details. Offer expires March 22, 2019. Platinum Savings Account
Fixed Rate CD
2.10%
2.60%
Annual Percentage Yield for 12 months1 Enjoy a special interest rate for 12 months with new money deposits of at least $25,000 and a minimum daily account balance of $25,000 or more.
Annual Percentage Yield for 11 months2 Guaranteed fixed rate with new money deposits of at least $25,000 for an 11-month term.
Both accounts are FDIC-insured up to the maximum allowable limit. Platinum Savings offer available in CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, MD, NJ, NY, SC and VA. Fixed Rate CD offer available in AL, AZ, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, MD, NJ, NM, NV, NY, PA, SC and VA. Portfolio by Wells Fargo® customers are eligible to receive an additional interest rate bonus on these accounts.3
1. To qualify for this offer, you must have a new or existing Platinum Savings account and enroll the account in this offer between 01/21/2019 and 03/22/2019. This offer is subject to change at any time, without notice. This offer is available only to Platinum Savings customers in the following states: CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, MD, NJ, NY, SC and VA. In order to earn the Special Interest Rate of 2.08% (Special Rate), you must deposit $25,000 in new money (from sources outside of Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., or its affiliates) to the enrolled savings account and maintain a minimum daily account balance of $25,000 throughout the term of this offer. The corresponding Annual Percentage Yield (APY) for this offer is 2.10%. The Special Rate will be applied to the enrolled savings account for a period of 12 months, starting on the date the account is enrolled in the offer. However, for any day during that 12 month period that the daily account balance is less than the $25,000 minimum, the Special Rate will not apply and the interest rate will revert to the standard interest rate applicable to your Platinum Savings account. As of 12/10/2018, the standard interest rate and APY for a Platinum Savings account in CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, MD, NJ, NY, SC and VA with an account balance of $0.01 to $99,999.99 is 0.03% (0.03% APY) and with an account balance of $100,000 and above is 0.05% (0.05% APY). Each tier shown reflects the current minimum daily collected balance required to obtain the applicable APY. Interest is compounded daily and paid monthly. The amount of interest earned is based on the daily collected balances in the account. Upon the expiration of the 12 month promotional period, standard interest rates apply. Minimum to open a Platinum Savings account is $25. A monthly service fee of $12 applies in any month the account falls below a $3,500 minimum daily balance. Fees may reduce earnings. Interest rates are variable and subject to change without notice. Wells Fargo may limit the amount you deposit to a Platinum Savings account to an aggregate of $1 million. Offer not available to Private Banking, Wealth, Business Banking or Wholesale customers. 2. Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is effective for accounts opened between 01/21/2019 and 03/22/2019. The 11-month New Dollar CD special requires a minimum of $25,000 brought to Wells Fargo from sources outside of Wells Fargo Bank N.A., or its affiliates to earn the advertised APY. Public Funds and Wholesale accounts are not eligible for this offer. APY assumes interest remains on deposit until maturity. Interest is compounded daily. Payment of interest on CDs is based on term: For terms less than 12 months (365 days), interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or at maturity (the end of the term). For terms of 12 months or more, interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. A fee for early withdrawal will be imposed and could reduce earnings on this account. Special Rates are applicable to the initial term of the CD only. At maturity, the Special Rate CD will automatically renew for a term of 6 months, at the interest rate and APY in effect for CDs on renewal date not subject to a Special Rate, unless the Bank has notified you otherwise. Due to the new money requirement, accounts may only be opened at your local branch. Wells Fargo reserves the right to modify or discontinue the offer at any time without notice. Offer cannot be combined with any other consumer deposit offer. Minimum new money deposit requirement of at least $25,000 is for this offer only and cannot be transferred to another account to qualify for any other consumer deposit offer. If you wish to take advantage of another consumer deposit offer requiring a minimum new money deposit, you will be required to do so with another new money deposit as stated in the offer requirements and qualifications. Offer cannot be reproduced, purchased, sold, transferred, or traded. 3. The Portfolio by Wells Fargo program has a $30 monthly service fee, which can be avoided when you have one of the following qualifying balances: $25,000 or more in qualifying linked bank deposit accounts (checking, savings, CDs, FDIC-insured IRAs) or $50,000 or more in any combination of qualifying linked banking, brokerage (available through Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC) and credit balances (including 10% of mortgage balances, certain mortgages not eligible). If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the bonus interest rate on all eligible savings accounts, and discounts or fee waivers on other products and services, will discontinue and revert to the Bank’s then-current applicable rate or fee. For bonus interest rates on time accounts, this change will occur upon renewal. If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the remaining unlinked Wells Fargo Portfolio Checking or Wells Fargo Prime Checking account will be converted to another checking product or closed.
