Growth puts squeeze on schools

As Pasco County Schools heads into another school year, crowded conditions are expected on several campuses within The Laker/Lutz News coverage area.

District officials are projecting that Wesley Chapel’s Wiregrass Ranch High School will operate at 141 percent of its capacity, with an estimated 2,310 students in a school designed for 1,633.

Creating a community display Artists of all ages are invited to take part in the Land O’ Lakes Branch Library’s special community ceramic tile painting summer program, being held at the library every Monday at 3 p.m., until Aug. 5. Car donation gives veteran smoother path to success

Chauncey Roberts, a veteran of the U.S. Army, arrived at Lutz Ferman Collision, as a passenger — but when he left, he was driving his own set of wheels.

Roberts was surprised when a silver 2011 Volkswagen Jetta sedan pulled up and was presented to him, during a July 24 event at the collision center.

Geico Auto Insurance and Enterprise were key contributors working in the National Auto Body Council’s Recycled Rides program to make this donation.

“It’s tears of joy,” the New Port Richey resident said, with emotion.“This is going to be so much better for me.”

Scott Rippelle, general manager at Ferman Collision, heard about Roberts’ transportation needs and was intrigued by his service in the U.S.Army.

As Rippelle stated:“When I was growing up, the biggest thing I always thought about [was] ‘Who’s our heroes?’When I got older, I realized our heroes were the high school students coming out of school to give up their lives to fight for our country.”

Rippelle referred Roberts to Geico, who actively donates vehicles to the Recycled Rides program.

After the veteran went through an approval process, his soon-to-be ride was sent to Ferman Collision in Lutz to get a brand new look.

Lutz teen selected as Shriners ambassador

Zoe Spanos doesn’t let her physical challenges define her, but manages to thrive instead.

The 15-year-old Lutz teenager, who has cerebral palsy, lives life like many teens.

The rising Steinbrenner High School sophomore is a straight A student and a dedicated member of JROTC and HOSA-Future Health Professionals.

She’s also a fitness buff — into cross training, weightlifting and nutrition.

The brace resembles something someone with a broken leg or fractured ankle might wear.

Zoe’s mother credits Shriners Hospitals for helping her daughter over the past decade, since 2008 to be exact.

For many years, Zoe would visit the hospital as many as three times a week, receiving physical, occupational and speech therapies, and providing custom braces as

she’s grown up. Zoe now visits roughly every six months for checkups.

Zoe’s efforts have inspired her mom.

“She’s always just been really driven.

She’s always been tough. Nothing ever stopped her. Ever. She’s really never complained,” her mom said.

Shriners has played a big role, too, she said.

“They’ve provided every brace she’s needed, every evaluation. They’ve actually really gone over and above with the brace,” Michelle said.

While Zoe’s family appreciates what Shriners has done for Zoe, the organization thinks highly of Zoe, too.

She has been selected as one of 22 patient ambassadors throughout the country to represent the hospital network at the 2019 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, an official PGA Tour event in Las Vegas this October.

During the Oct. 3 to Oct. 6 tournament at TPC Summerlin, Zoe will serve as a standard bearer throughout the weekend, carrying the scores of professional golfers as they compete in the tournament. It provides a rare inside-the-ropes opportunity at a PGA Tour event, as well as the chance to share how Shriners Hospitals have helped transform her life.

As part of her participation in the tournament, Zoe’s story and photo will appear in the tournament program, and her information will be shared with the Golf Channel, which will televise the tournament nationally, to be used during the broadcast.

The teen will also partake in a pro-am event the day before the PGA tournament officially begins, getting to spend the day with a PGA Tour pro, who hasn’t been announced yet.

Always looking to improve her game, Zoe said she wouldn’t mind picking up a tip or two from her pro golfing partner.

But, more importantly, she said,“I’m just excited to show what Shriners has done for, not really just me, but everyone in the country and people that have it way worse than me.”

Transit survey offers Pasco residents a say

The Dade City resident explained the need:“We have a number of bicyclists.The roads are not wide enough to accommodate them and the cars. If you get behind a set of (bicyclists), you’re stuck. It’s not safe.”

She was among those attending a recent workshop held by the Pasco Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) to gather community feedback and suggestions for its 2045 Transportation Plan.

The Pasco MPO is encouraging residents to partake in its current Mobility 2045 Transportation Survey to provide information it can consider in its future transportation planning. It held recent workshops in New Port Richey, Wesley Chapel and Dade City to promote the survey.

Geiger attended the workshop at the Historic Pasco County Courthouse in Dade City. She had not yet taken the survey, but said she planned to do so and to point out her safety concerns.

Nancy Hazelwood, also of Dade City, attended the workshop, too. She said she doesn’t like the idea of expanding Blanton Road in Dade City. She thinks that would lead to more traffic and commercial development.

“We’re a rural community and we hope to stay a rural community,” she explained.

“Zoning and land use should stay the same.”

At the Dade City workshop,Wally Blain, a senior project manager at Tindale Oliver, was among those present to field questions.

Tindale Oliver works with the MPO on various projects.

“The purpose of this survey is [to] review these needs, identify what’s a priority, and as we build a cost-affordable plan, we have a priority order,” Blain explained.

Potential economic impacts and job growth also are key factors in determining what projects may be implemented, Blain noted.

While the survey addresses projects that the county has had on its agenda for some time, it also took into account public feedback from the 2018 ‘It’s Time Pasco’ survey as well.

With more than 140 projects pinpointed on a map of Pasco County, those taking the survey can click on any given project, examine the details, react to the plan and offer comments.

Participants also can recommend projects they think are important, which the county can consider.

“Most of it are those community-based needs,” Blain said of the feedback.“We need sidewalks and mini-bike lanes, or we need better maintenance of roads.”

Blain also noted:“One key intersection that is focused on in the comments, is the State Road 54 and U.S. 41 interchange that FDOT (Florida Department of Transportation) currently has a project funded for. It’s good to know that those things that are getting the most comments

Proposed stormwater fees to stay the same The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report Pasco County is proposing that stormwater fees for fiscal year 2019-2020 to remain the same as they are this year.

The county uses a Stormwater Management Utility System for collecting fees.

The fee rate is charged per Equivalent Residential Unit, which is based upon an average of 2,890 square feet for a single family home.

The SMUS fee rate was initiated in 2007 at $47 per ERU. It remained the same until 2014, when it was raised to $57 per ERU. In 2017, it was raised to $95 per ERU, to pro-

vide funding for engineering, capital projects, maintenance and other costs.

The proposed rate for 2019-2020 remains at $95 per ERU, which will be included in the Truth in Millage (TRIM) notice sent out by the Pasco County Property Appraiser.

The public hearing for the Annual Stormwater Management Utility System Rate Resolution is scheduled for Sept. 3 at 9 a.m., in the board room of the Historic Pasco County Courthouse, 37918 Meridian Ave., in Dade City.

The Pasco County Commission can lower the rate if it so chooses, but cannot exceed the rate included in the TRIM notice, under state law.

The workshop also offered boards of schematics with aerial views of the projects reflected on the survey.

The visual displays helped Blain to show what the county would like to see occur in its long-term plans.

Schematics show where additional lighting, pedestrian overpasses and roundabouts could be implemented county-wide.

Added lanes are also a focal point of major roadways such as U.S. 19; state roads 52, 54 and 56; and Interstate 75.

According to the MPO, more than 1,100 miles of additional roadway lanes are needed by 2045, along with six major intersections and interchanges.

A five-year capital budget plan is being analyzed to see what funds are available in the near future.

Meanwhile, long-term allocations look bleak.

Roadway costs for the 2045 plan are estimated to exceed $7 billion. Available revenue falls far short of that.

The Mobility 2045 Transportation plan is expected to be adopted in December.

Former Miss Pasco keeps busy with acting, modeling

Leja Apple has surely kept herself busy in the years since being crowned 2013 Miss Pasco.

She has a burgeoning modeling and acting career — appearing in various commercials, infomercials and independent films. She’s also an on-air host at HSN, peddling hair and makeup products.

On top of that, she’s an adjunct professor of speech communication at St. Petersburg College and a sales event coordinator at The Birchwood in downtown St. Petersburg.

Plus, she is working toward her PhD in organizational leadership from Northcentral University.

So, how does she manage it all?

“Coffee is definitely my greatest friend,” Apple said, with a chuckle.

Apple, who lives in St. Petersburg, was the featured guest speaker at the East Pasco Networking Group’s July breakfast meeting in Dade City.

She used the forum to share her thoughts on the importance of verbal and non-verbal communication in business and sales.

She also discussed her career and life after pageantry, in a sit-down interview with The Laker/Lutz News.

While she doesn’t get to visit Pasco as often as she’d like,Apple has fond memories of regularly attending the Pasco County Fair, the Kumquat Festival and Main Street Zephyrhills festivals.

She recalled taking part in such events well before being awarded Miss Pasco and during her year of service in the role. Her older sister, Andrea Apple, was Miss Kumquat in 2009.

Apple admired Pasco for being a closeknit, faith-based community that “looks out for one another.”

“I just always have loved this area,”Apple said.“Even though you’re in a populous area — you’re less than an hour from Tampa — you still get that community, kind of country, small-town feel, and I love how everybody helps out each other.”

Apple competed in pageantry from 2007 to 2014. She won five local titles during that span, including Miss Largo and Miss Pinellas; she also finished in the top 10 in Miss Florida voting in 2014.

Being Miss Pasco ranks among her favorite pageant experiences,Apple said.

“It was fun. It was definitely a surprise, of course, winning, but it was fun,” she said.

Aside from the crowns and ribbons, Apple cherishes the lasting relationships she built through pageantry.

“You get to meet so many great people with competing,” Apple said. “Some of the girls I competed with I’m still friends to this day; we hang out with each other. One girl, she used to call it the “Miss Florida Sorority,” because you got to see a lot of the same people.”

She enjoys running into the contestants.

“It’s always so fun to see where life has taken them,” she said.

Apple also appreciates the scholarships she won through pageantry, and the professional development offered along the way.

pageantry is just how much confidence that you earn and the public speaking.

“It definitely has opened doors and given me opportunities to share what I’ve learned.”

Ultimately,Apple wants to become a professor and teach online full-time, while having the flexibility to pursue acting and modeling.

The former Miss Pasco clearly enjoys the latter, but acknowledged show business “is all over the place” and “comes and goes” in terms of being able to maintain a steady income.

Sometimes, she said,“I’ve had something every single day for months and then other times nothing for six months, so it just really kind of depends.”

That said, some of her most gratifying experiences have come through commercials and infomercial work — including a gig for Thermacell mosquito repellent, in which she pretended to be bitten by mosquitos while hiking.

“They’re so much fun,” she said. “The overreacting and everything, it’s always neat

to see that.”

Apple noted she’s sometimes taken aback when she sees herself on late night television, plastered across a billboard, or pictured on the back of a bus.

She recounted seeing her likeness in a Walmart print ad for Fruit of the Loom’s thermal wear.“It was kind of weird walking through Walmart and you’re like,‘Hey, that’s me on the package,’ she said.

Then, she purchased “like 50 pairs” of the brand’s thermal wear in the store.“The person at the checkout counter was probably like, ‘What is wrong with you?’” she said, poking a little fun at herself.

Apple clearly considers her pageantry experience as being beneficial to her life, and she offered some words of advice for anyone aspiring to become Miss Pasco.

“Just go for it,”Apple said.“Even if you’ve never competed in a pageant before, even if you’re a pageant queen and have always done it — you will learn a lot about yourself, you will learn a lot about how much you can push yourself and put you outside of your comfort zone.”

Educator offers tips for back to school

By William Jacko Special to The Laker / Lutz News Long before Andrea Mannino founded Amici Pizza, it was the prospect of love, not business, that inspired him to leave his hometown of Carini, Italy, for America.

His son, Vincent, smiles as he tells the story of the family restaurant his parents founded 18 years ago in Wesley Chapel.

“My parents are from the same town in Sicily,” relays Vincent. “My father heard about this girl named Josephine from his hometown who had moved to America, and he knew he had to meet her. So he too came to America, met Josephine in Brooklyn, and they fell in love and got married.”

A quarter of a century later, Andrea and Josephine moved to Florida, and Amici Pizza was born. Specializing in hand-tossed, New York-style pizza and made-from-scratch Italian dishes, Amici Pizza has thrived in Wesley Chapel since 2001.

“Just about everything is prepped here,” said Vincent, who co-manages the restaurant with his brother, Rick. “We make our own lasagna and meatballs. We bread our own chicken, eggplant and veal. We make our own desserts, and have the sweetest cannoli around. And, of course, we offer espresso and cappuccino coffees.”

The freshness of its food is the key to Amici’s success, Rick adds.

“It just seems so basic, but it’s the most important thing. We make our dough from scratch and don’t use any preservatives.

We’re not like a franchise, where they actually send everything pre-measured and mixed,” said Rick.

Freshness begins with the Manninos buying their produce locally every day and taking it back to the restaurant to create their authentic Italian recipes they will serve that day.

“Our veal cutlet for the Sorrentino is freshly pounded, hand-breaded and fried, so you’ve got the layer of veal, the layer of eggplant, and then the marinara sauce and mozzarella on top —and done in here,” said Rick.

Other menu items include salads, pasta, wings, hot and cold subs, calzones, Stromboli, entrees and desserts. House specials are Italian recipes that the Manninos have created, such as bacio, chicken contadino and chicken villetta.

“My parents created our specials over the years, like chicken villetta. This is a rosemarybaked chicken dish in creamy Alfredo sauce, with onions, mushrooms and homegrown rosemary from my father’s garden,” said Rick.

Amici Pizza has a longtime customer base that feels like family, and the Manninos work hard to keep it that way. The restaurant offers take out, catering and dining at the restaurant, including outside seating.

Planning Commission recommends code changes The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report Pasco County Commissioners are recommending approval of proposed changes to the county’s land development code, to enable the county to use park impact fees to pay for a broader array of amenities.

The amendment calls for allowing the fees be used to support splashpads, centers and playgrounds.

David Goldstein, chief assistant county attorney, said when the impact fees were adopted those items were not included on the list. At the time, the thinking was that the fees would not raise enough money to pay for those types of projects, he said.

Planning commissioners also are recommending approval of changes to the land development code relating to ecological corridors and mobility fees.

There was no public testimony during the public hearing, but Planning Commissioner Peter Hanzel said the Pasco

County Commission should raise the county’s park impact fees to help provide funding for more park and recreation amenities.

In other action, planning commissioners: • Recommended approval of a request

by State Road 54 Investment Properties LLC to change the zoning from a master-planned unit development district to a general commercial use on a 3.63-acre site on the north side of State Road 54, about 1,000 feet west of Stonegate Falls Drive, about 1,000 feet east of Oakstead Boulevard.

Summer heat poses health risks; take steps to stay safe

Heat advisories, warnings and watches have been issued in recent weeks across the country, putting millions of Americans at risk.

At least six deaths were attributed to the massive heatwave, and events, such as the New York City Marathon, were cancelled, according to CBS News.

And, it comes as no surprise that Florida’s notorious heat and humidity also can create potentially dangerous conditions.

So, what can people do to reduce their risk of suffering from heat-related illnesses?

One of the most important steps people can take is to avoid dehydration, said Dr. Katrina Cordero, the Emergency Room medical director at St. Joseph’s Hospital-North, in Lutz.

Dehydration can lead to other complications, including heat exhaustion and heatstroke, she said.

Heatstroke is a serious condition that requires immediate emergency care, Cordero said.

Symptoms of heatstroke include a temperature, confusion and, at times, irritability, she said.

Other symptoms can include hallucinations and tremors, she added.

Cordero offered some reminders to help avoid heat-related illnesses.

“If you must be outside for a prolonged period of time, at least try to stay in some shade,” the doctor said.

Be sure to stay hydrated. It helps to carry a bottle around with you, to serve as a reminder, she added.

Drinking Gatorade can help, too, to restore electrolytes that are lost when people sweat.

A personal fan can help keep you cool, and wearing a broad brim hat can give you your own personal shade, too.

“If you must go out, make sure you’re not staying out there all day,” she said.

Beach-goers also need to avoid too much time in the sun, she said.“You might want to take a break, go into a store — so your body has a chance to cool down.”

It’s also important to wear sunscreen, and to reapply.

People often forget to reapply — especially after they’ve been swimming, she said.

“Just a short exposure, with our strong sun, can cause some damage,” Cordero said.

The doctor also advised coaches to be sure they give their players plenty of chances for water or sports drink breaks.

“The hotter that it is, increase their (break) frequency, depending on how long they’re staying out and how much they’re exerting themselves,” Cordero said.

Summer dangers CHILDREN DIE IN HOT CARS Fifty-two children died in hot cars in 2018 — the deadliest year on record in the past 20 years, according to the National Safety Council. Almost 800 children have died from vehicular heatstroke since 1998.

How does it happen?

• A caregiver forgets a child in a vehicle • The child gains access to a vehicle • Someone knowingly leaves a child in a vehicle The National Safety Council says to stick to a routine to reduce the risk of forgetting a child. Keep a purse, briefcase or even a left shoe in the back seat to force you to look there before leaving the car.

Also, be sure to keep vehicle doors locked, to prevent children from climbing in; and never leave a child inside the car when you are not there, even if you’re just running a quick errand. (Editor’s note: Remember to protect your pets from hot cars, too).

PREVENT DROWNINGS Drowning is the leading cause of injury death for children ages 1 through 14, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC offers these key prevention tips: • Learn life-saving skills: Know the basics of swimming (floating, moving through the water) and learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

• Fence your pool: Use a four–sided isolation fence, with self–closing and self– latching gates.

• Require life jackets in and around natural water bodies, such as lakes or the ocean.

• Be vigilant: Closely supervise kids when they’re in or near water, including bathtubs. Drowning happens quickly and quietly. Adults watching kids in and near water should avoid distracting activities, such as playing cards, reading books, talking on the phone, and using alcohol or drugs.

HEATSTROKE IS DANGEROUS Heatstroke requires emergency treatment, experts at the Mayo Clinic say.

Untreated heatstroke can quickly damage your brain, heart, kidneys and muscles. The damage worsens the longer treatment is delayed, increasing your risk of serious complications or death.

EARLY RELEASE DAYS

Pasco County Schools will implement a monthly, two-hour early release schedule beginning with the 2019-2020 school year.

Early release days will be the second Wednesday of each month, starting in September, except for January 2020 when it will be on the third Wednesday.

Project needs outpace funding in Pasco County Schools

That’s because the current Cypress Creek Middle High School is serving students in grades six through 12, in separate schools on the same campus.

Once the new middle school opens, it will have space for more students and high school space also will be freed to accommodate more students.

Williams said he also expects charter schools in the Wesley Chapel area to help absorb growth occurring there.

Even with boundary shifts, Wiregrass Ranch High’s enrollment will remain high, Superintendent Kurt Browning said.

“Keep in mind, there are more students moving in, right behind them,”Williams said.

“One thing we’re trying to avoid is a 10period day,” Browning said.

Projects that are on the drawing board, or under construction, are expected to help the district address continued growth, Williams said.

Starkey K-8 is expected to open in two years, and is expected to provide relief to Odessa Elementary, which is expected to operate at 130 percent of its capacity this year.

Bexley Elementary and Sunlake Elementary are both adding classroom wings in the coming year, which will increase capacity at those growing schools.

Bexley, which opened in 2017, is projected to have 912 students at a school built for 906. The new classroom wing will accommodate 200 students.

Sunlake High School is projected at an enrollment of 1,994, at a school with a capacity for 1,698.

Although Connerton is expected to operate over capacity, Williams does not expect additional growth this year. Even so, he noted,“that is certainly something that we’re keeping an eye on because there’s obviously a lot of growth coming around that area.

The district’s high schools in Central Pasco and East Pasco all are expected to operate near or above capacity.

Deputy superintendent Ray Gadd said the district expects a new magnet school, which will be built on the east side of the county, primarily will attract students from Wiregrass Ranch,Wesley Chapel, Pasco and Zephyrhills high schools.

The school will offer technical training programs and academic rigor. It is set open in 2022.

As Pasco County Schools heads into a new school year, the district faces a perennial issue:There’s not enough money to cover district construction and maintenance needs.

“Our current debt is about $525 million,” Chris Williams, director of planning told Pasco County School Board members during a workshop last week.

Pasco’s rapid growth continues to create demand for new or expanded schools, and the district’s list of maintenance needs is lengthy.

There are buildings “that aren’t even on the list, that we can’t even get to,” said Alison Crumbley, school board chairwoman.

“There are lots of projects that need to be done that are not being done,”Williams agreed.

The state reduced its Public Education Capital Outlay (PECO) fund for Pasco County Schools to zero for next year, Williams said.

“We received $1.2 million in ’18-’19, but are projected to receive zero this year,” he said.

“Of course, as you can tell with the current debt, our capital needs continue to outpace our revenue.”

School Board member Allen Altman said for people who are unfamiliar with the district’s size and scope, it’s hard to fathom its needs.

“We have, as a district, somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,400 individual buildings.

“You think about that and you look at the dollars that are here for maintenance and repair.

“We are below the estimated needed cost for the maintenance for our facilities.

There is no golden pot of money,” Altman said.

The district must build new schools, renovate existing schools, fix roofs, paint buildings, provide buses, improve safety, upgrade technology, replace furniture and make myriad repairs, district officials say.

The dollars simply don’t stretch far enough, they say.

There is some bright news,Williams said.

“In the tax roll, we’re projecting an 8.67 increase,” he said.This is the second year the county has exceeded the tax roll that was achieved back in 2007-2008.

The Penny for Pasco revenues also are projected to be up.

“Our Penny for Pasco collections continue to be at the highest level of collection since the inception of the Penny (tax).

In 2019-2020, the Penny revenue is projected to be $31.1 million, which Williams characterized as “very good news.”

The planning director also noted that impact fees are expected to come in at $26 million, which is higher than initially anticipated.

Even so, Altman said: “New residential growth never pays for itself. In spite of that impact fee number coming in higher than expected, it still does not cover our cost.”

“I have coworkers who don’t have cars,” Roberts said.“I can give them a ride home or give them a ride to work. I understand that situation – been there, done that.

Now I can bless others.”

So, it turns out that the generosity that Roberts has received will have a spillover effect — spreading that kindness to others.

Bishop McLaughlin hires coach with NFL pedigree

I

t’s not often a former NFL and NCAA Division I coach comes knocking on the door of a local high school wanting to coach youth football.

But, that’s what happened at Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School.

Joe Vaughn spent the last seven seasons — from 2012 to 2018 — as an assistant strength and conditioning coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Before that, from 2006 to 2011, Vaughn served a similar role for NCAA Division I FBS (Football Ball Subdivision) University of Kansas – also his alma mater where he earned All-Big 12 and offensive team MVP honors playing center in the early 2000s.

The latest addition to his resume: Bishop McLaughlin Hurricanes head football coach.

Since exiting the Buccaneers franchise this offseason, the 36-year-old Wesley Chapel resident has continued training professional athletes at The Clinic, a sports and fitness performance center in Tampa. His clientele includes Carolina Panthers (and former Buccaneers All-Pro) defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, as well as current Buccaneers — linebacker Kwon Alexander, offensive tackle Demar Dotson and tight end O.J. Howard.

In addition to personal training, Vaughn figured it to be a prime opportunity to dive into the prep football ranks and help teach the game to youth — at a school where his friend and co-mentor, Rex Desvaristes, is the new athletic director.

“We got to talking and he wanted me to join his staff and I told him I would help him out, and it wound up just getting an interview for the head coaching job,”Vaughn said.

“It just came at the right time,” he said.

Vaughn was officially named Bishop McLaughlin’s new football coach on July 2, less than two months before the prep season gets underway.

To put his spin on the program, Vaughn said he plans to instill “a winning mentality” and have the team “play within their skillset.”

“We’re going to be assignment sound,” the coach said.“We’re going to know what we can do, what we cannot do, we’re not going to overextend ourselves, and we’re going to stay simple, but focused, and I believe when you stay simple and you stay focused then you’re much more effective than when you’re trying to do something that’s not in your skillset or over the top.”

The coach said that all begins with hitting the weight room and getting back to the basic fundamentals of running, form tackling, ball pursuit and more.

“Once we do the little things, that’s building a foundation and then we can build on that,” he said.

Without venturing too deep into Xs and Os, Vaughn offered up a little glimpse into the style of play the Hurricanes will employ in 2019: “We’re going to run the ball at Bishop, our D-line’s going to come off the ball, those are our focus points right there.

Coming off the ball, the other things will come.”

Meantime, in just a few short weeks on the job, the veteran NFL and college coach already feels comfortable in his new role. He pointed to the immediate embrace he’s received from school administration.

“I like how just everybody seems very supportive at Bishop,”Vaughn said.“It’s been a warm situation going into…so it just makes you want to do the very best that you can. I think winning programs also have great support systems, and I think Bishop has that, all around.”

Rehabilitated sea turtles released Lilo loves to catch things Lilo is a 5-year-old Siamese mix. She was found on the side of a road in Tampa at 2 weeks old, and had to be bottle fed every few hours. The Florida Aquarium Animal Response Team on July 18 returned Jupiter, a subadult loggerhead sea turtle, and three juvenile green sea turtles (Canaveral, Enterprise and Satellite) back into the Atlantic Ocean at Gamble Rogers Memorial State Park on Flagler Beach in Flagler County, according to the aquarium.

The release of the four rehabilitated sea turtles was made possible through the aquarium’s ongoing partnership with Florida Blue, as well as direct support from The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

With an emphasis on critical care and release back into their natural environment, the aquarium’s response team assists with sea turtle rehabilitation not only in Tampa Bay, but nationwide.

The turtles that were released included two of the most common species to Florida’s coastal waters: green and loggerhead sea turtles.

All four turtles ended up at The Florida Aquarium’s Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center in Apollo Beach earlier this year from the Volusia County Marine Science Center.

Each of the turtles suffered cold-stunning and other debilitating effects, and were rescued on the state’s east coast.

With around-the-clock care, the Florida Aquarium response team was able to warm the sea turtles to slowly raise their body temperatures and provide them with additional supportive medical care.

Candy loves to snuggle Candy came to the shelter in the beginning of June and was originally very shy, but with some well-timed treats and bribes, she has been very happy to spend time with new people. As Lillian Cucuzza was pulling into her driveway in Land O’ Lakes one afternoon, she saw a shadow pass over. Above her were two swallow-tailed kites flying very low over her neighbor’s house. This bird of prey, with its deeply forked tail, is sometimes called ‘the coolest bird on the planet’ (AllAboutBirds.com). Kites glide and soar through the air on thermals and updrafts. They feed on insects by capturing them with their feet in flight and then eat them ‘on the fly.’
