‘Engage’ kids: Improve attendance
By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com
Students typically don’t decide to drop out of school overnight. And, there’s typically more to the story, when a student starts missing school on a regular basis. At least those were a couple points of discussion last week during a Pasco County

School Board workshop on the topic of school attendance. “Attendance is really a symptom of something else that is happening with our students,” said Angel Hernandez, senior supervisor of student support programs and services for the district. Pasco County has been working to define what on-track, at-risk and off-track means, in terms of attendance, behavior, aca-
demic performance and discipline. In high school, the measures include GPA and progress of meeting graduation requirements. The reasons students miss school can vary from being ill, to being on vacation, to choosing not to be there because they are disengaged, Hernandez told school board See ATTENDANCE, page 11A

Library gets by, with a little help from its ‘Friends’ A group that is passionate about broadening the offerings at the Lutz Branch Library is trying to bolster its numbers. The nonprofit group, the Friends of the Lutz Branch Library, is looking for a few new members that share a passion for books and the betterment of their local community. Volunteers meet nearly every Wednesday morning at the library to do work in the Book Depot. The group also welcomes monetary support to help pay for programs, such as ‘Tricky Dogs,’ a drum circle and puppet-making workshops. The organization also provides crafting supplies and snacks for various programs. For more information, visit FOLTampa.org, or call (813) 273-3652 and ask for the Lutz Branch Library. Above, Inside the book depot, the Friends of the Lutz Branch Library’s secretary, Ann Marks, of Wesley Chapel, uses a stepstool to reach the higher shelves, as Barbara Fite, of Lutz, the group’s treasurer, puts books on the lower shelves. The women are organizing and placing recently donated books. They also will pull books that haven’t sold, and they donate to agencies like VA hospitals, nursing homes and the Joshua House, a haven for abused children.

Medical Center of Trinity marks a first in Tampa Bay area A robotic-assisted coronary-vascular device used to treat blocked arteries By Brian Fernandes bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com
Medical Center of Trinity is the first medical institution in the Tampa Bay area to use the CorPath GRX system – a robotic-assisted device used in coronary care. The hospital had a celebration on July 30 to unveil the device to the public. Dr. Patrick Cambier, an interventional cardiologist at the medical center, has had the opportunity to operate using the new device. “We’re very excited for the Medical Center of Trinity, that they decided to be the first hospital (in the Bay Area),” Cambier said.“It’s a completely new paraSee TRINITY, page 11A

Pasco County educator embraces theater again By Brian Fernandes bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com
During college years and beyond, Patty Smithey has devoted much of her time traveling the globe, and helping kids as an educator. Earlier this year, though, the Land O’ Lakes resident decided to devote more of her leisure time tapping into her artistic side with acting – a lifelong passion. “I realized recently that I needed to do something that really, truly made me happy,” Smithey explained. “I need to help other people, but it’s OK to help yourself, too.” The college admissions recruiter made her debut theater performance, as an adult, in June, in Cabaret. And, she just finished starring as the lead role Ariel, in The New Tampa Players’ production of “The Little Mermaid.” While she just got back into acting this year, her fascination with the craft dates back to her early childhood. Smithey recalls getting bit by the acting bug when she was just 3 years old.
COURTESY OF PATTY SMITHEY
Patty Smithey, of Land O’ Lakes, recently became reacquainted with her love for performing on stage. She recently played Ariel, the lead role in ‘The Little Mermaid’ musical.
The Tampa native said she and her younger sister would put on their own performances at home. These homemade productions often in-
volved acting, dancing and singing. Smithey described herself as being a shy kid, but said acting provided an outlet for her to comfortably express herself. “I just really love musical theater,” she said.“It’s always been in the back of my mind burning.” That passion helped her break out of her shell as she got older, eventually joining the drama club while attending Steinbrenner High School, in Lutz. The experience granted her the opportunity to venture outside the school auditorium with her group and perform statewide. She did consider acting as a possible career path, but said her mother encouraged her to pursue other avenues. Smithey attended Florida State University where she received both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in just four years. “I majored in international affairs, which was an amazing experience,” Smithey stated. “I got to study abroad in Panama, Prague, Croatia – the most beautiful places.” See THEATER, page 11A
Wiregrass Ranch High uses online orientation By Brian Fernandes bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com

Dining options expand at Cypress Creek Town Center A celebration was held last week to mark the grand opening of Walk-On’s Bistreaux & Bar, in the Cypress Creek Town Center, off State Road 56 and west of Interstate 75 in Pasco County. During the grand opening festivities, there was a traditional ribbon cutting and the franchise co-owners presented a check for $5,000 to Sunrise of Pasco County. This is the franchise’s first location in Florida. Virtual orientation was back by popular demand at Wiregrass Ranch High School. The online amenity, offered Aug. 1 to Aug. 6, provided an alternative to help Wiregrass Ranch students get situated for the coming school year, which begins for students on Aug. 12. The option allowed students who are returning to Wiregrass Ranch, and their parents, to view class schedules without being present on campus. “Now parents and students can access the same information from the convenience of their mobile device or computer from home,” explained Rebecca Jarke, assistant principal at Wiregrass Ranch.“It’s more convenient for families who have multiple children in the school system and may not be able to get to each school during the various orientations.” The high school, located in Wesley Chapel, introduced virtual orientation last year, alongside its traditional on-campus orientation day. The online version was so well-received, Wiregrass Ranch decided to make it the primary means for orientation for returning students. The options allows students to
avoid long lines and wait times. First-time freshmen had their own oncampus orientation on Aug. 1. “It gives them an opportunity to make connections with current students and staff – to make the first day of high school a little easier,” Jarke said. “Also, with only ninthgrade students being here, the campus is not as crowded.” Re-entering students, and their parents, were still accommodated at Wiregrass Ranch - receiving online assistance on Aug. 6. In a computer lab, students could access their myPascoConnect accounts, while parents were able to log in to or create their own parent portal accounts. Both private platforms allowed student schedules to be viewed, as well as the ability to purchase items like lockers or gym gear. Parents can access the accounts yearround to stay up-to-date with their child’s academics. Viewable information includes grades, attendance records and test scores. Users of the virtual orientation are encouraged to offer feedback on their experience and possible ways to improve it, Jarke said. Wiregrass Ranch is one of several Pasco County schools that use virtual orientations.

Pasco Schools budget nearly $1.4 billion By B.C. Manion
Highlights of the proposed budget include a 3 percent increase for district employees and a 5 percent increase in costs for insurance benefits, as the district continues to cover 100 percent of the cost of employee insurance premiums. The district also plans to increase its staff by 35.4 positions at the school level and 5.6 positions at the district level. The largest appropriations in its capital budget include the remodeling and renovation of Zephyrhills High School; the construction of Cypress Creek Middle School; the construction of Starkey K-8; new classroom wings at Sunlake High and Bexley Elementary; and design work for a new magnet technical high school on the east side of the county. The budget also includes a long list of maintenance projects and purchases, including the lease/purchase of computers and buses. And, includes the completion of the renovation/remodeling of Land O’ Lakes High School, which is almost finished. No one spoke during the public comment portion of the public hearing, which was the first of two required public hearings. The second has been scheduled for Sept. 17 at 6 p.m., in the school board room at the district’s administrative complex, at 7227 Land O’ Lakes Blvd., in Land O’ Lakes.

The Pasco County School Board has approved a tentative budget approaching $1.4 billion for the coming fiscal year. Pasco County Superintendent Kurt Browning covered highpoints of the proposed budget at last week’s Pasco County School Board meeting, before the board approved the tentative budget and tentative tax rate. The new fiscal budget of $1,392,942,266 is an increase of $131.7 million over last year, Browning said. It includes a general operating budget of $664.5 million and a capital budget of $339.1 million, according to district figures. The proposed tax millage rate for 20192020 fiscal year is 6.101 mills, which is a decrease of 0.178 mills. Under the proposed rate, a homeowner of a $175,000 home, after the deduction of the $25,000 homestead exemption, would pay $26.70 less than they did last year, Browning said. The district received additional funds totaling more than $27.8 million, to accommodate projected growth of 1,294 students and recurring expenses, the superintendent said.

Start Your Day With A Fresh Breakfast Special to The Laker / Lutz News
Breakfast can be the most important meal of the day, so why not start it with something tasty and healthy at Keke’s Breakfast Café, in the Willow Bend Towne Center in Lutz. Owners Stephen Poletta and Scott Crawford pride themselves on the freshness of Keke’s food. “We cut our potatoes, hand-crack our eggs, and never use liquid egg mix,” said Poletta. “If you order an omelet, you’re getting three cracked eggs fresh-to-order, because made fresh to order is very important to me.” Just about everything on Keke’s menu begins with something fresh. “Our strawberries, grapes, bananas— everything is fresh. We whisk our pancake and waffle batter. We grind our coffee beans. Everything’s made inhouse,” adds Poletta. This includes Keke’s popular Florida pancakes and waffles, which are topped with fresh strawberries, blueberries and bananas — not frozen fruit or preserves. “Everybody likes our Florida pancakes and waffles,” Poletta said. “But, our cheese steak omelets and blueberryor raspberry-stuffed French toast are to die for. All of our omelets, and the regular French toast, are fabulous, too.” While breakfast is number one at Keke’s, the restaurant also boasts an extensive lunch menu, including its popular turkey and ham club, tuna fish sandwich and cheese steak panini. “It just makes me feel good to see the smiles, to see our regulars come back two or three times a week for breakfast and lunch,” said Poletta. “We must be doing something right to have so many happy customers.”
Keke’s large portions, fresh food and unique recipes create picturesque dishes, which often inspire guests to send photos of their meals to envious friends and family. “We love that our guests take pictures of their food — that’s something I’ve never seen in my 20 years in the restaurant business,” said Poletta. “As soon as we put the food down, people take pictures of their meal, before diving in.” At Keke’s, employees emphasize cleanliness, fast service and attention to detail. Its spacious dining room accommodates a large volume of people, making wait times short and fast. The restaurant also offers takeout and catering. Keke’s is open daily from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., an ideal work schedule for parents and students who have their evenings to study or spend with their families. “I’m blessed to have such an excellent staff — employees who truly care about their guests and the quality of our food. It’s this warm hospitality, our generous portions and the great care that goes into making our food, that create our success.”

Before starting my business, I worked in a gym as a personal p trainer for over three years and become the top trainer in that gym. I saw w many people work out every day, five days a week, and never lose weight. I left the gym because I wanted to give my clients a private p studio and complete program to lose weight and stay fit for life — a system that taught them how to eat healthy, exercise regularly and provide the em motional support and accountability they needed to stick with the plan and no ot give up. These four components — nutrition, efffective workou uts, social support and accountability — are the reasons why many of our mem mbers can achieve their goals in a much shorter time then they have seen on theiir own, and then maintain their weight and new healthy lifestyle. When you take away any one of these core elements, it’s difficult to lose weight. And that’s why most people stop using their gym m membership — because exercise by itself does not always result in weight loss, they t become discouraged, and eventually stop going. Just like our member Judy, age 63, who worked out for f two years on her own with no weight loss. She started on our plan, and in 4 months m lost 31 lbs. Our stafff specializes in exercise and nutrition for wom men 40 and older and are fully vested in your success. If you want to live life morre fully, call us today to get started on your journey to a healthier you. Paninis help relieve stress on school days
Do you have a PLAN? ESTATE PLANNING isn’t just for the wealthy, it’s for everyone. Because it’s really for them.
By Shari Bresin Special to The Laker/Lutz News
It’s August — and that means families will be getting back into their school routines. Besides gearing up in the morning, there’s the evening to think about, too. As kids get into their extracurricular activities and homework habits, there is usually one part of the day that can get particularly stressful: dinnertime. We all hear that this should be family time, a time for no TV, a chance to talk about our day and, of course, the meal should be a healthy one. Having dinner together has a positive impact on a child’s development, but cooking often can take too long to fit into a busy evening of helping with homework, and dropping kids off and picking them up from practice, rehearsals or other activities. This is where paninis can help save the day. And, it just so happens that besides being back-to-school time, August is also National Panini Month. Your experience with paninis may be limited to a sandwich shop, but you can easily make them at home. They are similar to a sandwich, but are not quite the same. To make a panini, you press or heat the ingredients to make them blend together in a press machine. You want the panini pressed to the point when the bread can’t be removed from the middle ingredients (meat, cheese and veggies). If you don’t have a press machine, simply grill the panini on the stove (think grilled cheese) and “press” using a spatula, flip to other side, and repeat. You can also use the lid to a pan instead of a spatula. Traditionally, you wouldn’t use every day sliced bread for a panini. Instead, use a baguette, rolls or focaccia-style bread. It just takes a few minutes to make, and the crispier you like it, the longer you’ll want to press it.

As families settle back into school week routines, paninis offer a good choice for quick meals.
Ham and Turkey Panini Ingredients 2 slices provolone cheese 1 ciabatta roll, split (or any bread of choice) 2 slices ham 2 slices turkey ½ cup arugula, or spinach 1 medium tomato, sliced 1 bell pepper, sliced ½ small red onion 1 teaspoon olive oil 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar Salt and pepper to taste Directions Preheat and oil press machine. Place a slice of cheese on both the top and bottom pieces of bread. Layer meat slices, arugula, tomato, bell pepper, and onion on bottom slice of bread. Scatter most of olive oil and vinegar, add salt and pepper to taste. Place top slice of bread on top and graze with remaining olive oil. Place sandwich on machine and press shut. Cook until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted (about 5 minutes). You can also make it on the stove and use the spatula (or lid of a pan) to press it down a few minutes on each side. Yield: Makes one sandwich
WHERE DID THE PANINI ORIGINATE?
As you might tell from the name, it is Italian and means “small bread.” According to Grand Voyage Italy, they became popular in Milan in the ’70s and ’80s for a quick option for people on lunch breaks, and then made their way to New York City at upscale restaurants. Eventually, the popularity of paninis spread to other cities, adding more varieties and becoming more available at family friendly establishments. In Italy, they have their own “rules” for paninis. They use only one type of meat and

only a few slices of it, and no olive oil and vinegar — they save the dressing for salads. But, here, there aren’t really any rules. There’s no right or wrong way to make a hot sandwich. Just try to get as many food groups into it as you can (fruit, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy). CRITICAL NEED FOR BLOOD DONORS
OneBlood, a local blood center, is urging people with O-positive blood to donate as soon as possible. Summer is a challenging time for blood donations. School is out and people are on vacation, but the need for blood does not stop, according to a release by OneBlood. Thirty-seven percent of the population has O-positive blood, making it the most common blood type, which makes it transfused more often. Generally, healthy people age 16 and older who weigh at least 110 pounds can donate blood. For a list of OneBlood Donor Centers and Big Red Bus blood drives, visit OneBlood.org.

The Medical Center of Trinity has announced the successful completion of the first robotic-assisted coronary/peripheral angioplasty in the Tampa Bay region. Physicians use minimally invasive technology, which improves the precision of stent placements. Combined with the enhanced visualization of the X-ray images and robotic precision, procedures are transformed, ultimately improving patient care.

SHOP WITH A COP
The Dade City Youth Council, the Dade City Police Department and Walmart have teamed up for the annual “Summer Shop with a Cop.” The activity is designed to build a strong relationship between students, the youth council and the police department, while providing less-fortunate students with backto-school clothes. This is the second year for the partnership between the organizations. A total of 18 students from Pasco and R.B. Cox elementary and Pasco Middle schools were paired with a youth council member at the police department to shop at the Dade City Walmart. Each student received $100 of new clothing. For information about the program, call Dade City Mayor Camille Hernandez at (352) 523-5050.

ATTENDANCE, from page 1A members. “Disengagement is preceded by other things,” he said, which can range from poor academic performance, to mental health or other issues. Some kids don’t want to be at school, Hernandez said. They say things like,“I don’t feel welcome at my school. I’m not being treated nicely.” Not being at school has consequences, he added. “We know the reality is that when our students are not in school, they are not engaged in school, and when they’re disengaged, they fall short of meeting that goal and graduating, and achieving success once they leave our system,” he said. The district can track attendance through data, which allows it to make a closer analysis. It can break down the data by grade level, demographic group and day, week or month. Overall, 38,500 Pasco students were on track for the year in attendance, while
THEATER, from page 1A She credits her travels in helping her to develop a greater appreciation for daily life, and a broader understanding of other people. “One thing I learned throughout my educational experience, that’s consistent, is about people and human nature,” Smithey added. Her newly found connection to others compelled her to focus her career on academics and to inspire others in their
TRINITY, from page 1A digm.” The robotic arm handles medical tools that would otherwise be manually used by physicians – including a catheter and stents. At a console station, the doctor maneuvers the arm using a set of joysticks.A large monitor shows where to guide the catheter, as its inserted into the patient’s artery. The blockage can be pinpointed, through the use of an X-ray. A stent is inserted into the clogged artery with a balloon catheter. The balloon is inflated and the stent is locked into place, to keep the artery open. Brandon Davis of Corindus Vascular Robotics Inc., explained the functions of the device, at the event, which took place in the hospital’s lobby.
24,200 were at risk and 12,400 were offtrack, Hernandez said. The data reveals that there are no demographic groups that appear to be at greater risk than others, Hernandez said.“They’re all within the 90s,” he said. He also noted that sixth grade has the highest attendance rating. When the district looks at its attendance rates, it’s not just looking at unexcused absences, but excused absences, too. School Board member Cynthia Armstrong, a former teacher, voiced concerns about the growing number of children missing school for family vacations. “Parents would never think, in the past, about taking their kids out for a cruise just because they could get the cruise cheaper during the school year. That seems to be just a growing trend,”Armstrong said. She asked:“How are we stressing to parents that attendance is important?” A change to the district’s code of conduct allows students to make up any and all assignments, tests or related work of any excused or unexcused absence at full credit. But, even when students can make up
the credit, they’re still losing out, said School Board vice chairwoman Colleen Beaudoin. “Even if they can show up later and make up the test, they’re missing learning opportunities. They’re missing the chance to interact with their peers, and they’re missing the group work, the projects,” Beaudoin said. School Board chairwoman Alison Crumbley wondered what the district does to address the kids who are there, but are just not understanding the content. Hernandez said efforts are being made to give students quizzes to help check how they’re doing, so extra help can be offered to help them catch up before the end of the course, when it’s too late. Hernandez also noted that some schools have dances or other celebrations to encourage good attendance. Along those lines, School Board member Megan Harding said it’s important for schools to be consistent. She recalled students being excited about the prospect of attending a quarterly dance party. “They didn’t make it the first quarter, but the second quarter came and there was no
dance party; the third quarter came, and there was no dance party. “There was no consistency,” Harding said. “Is there going to be some consistency or accountability within our schools?” Harding asked.“Those little ones they really do want that dance party.” Hernandez said it takes a team effort to tackle the issue. “It used to be that this work happened through the lens of social work,” he said. “We’re trying to break away from that, as we build a compassionate schools frame for our sites, we want all of our other members to engage.” Superintendent Kurt Browning said parents need to hear from the district level — not just the school level — about the importance of attendance. He said he expects increased efforts to reach out to parents, through newsletters and periodic phone calls to emphasize how important it is for children to be in school. The district has an obligation to make school engaging and to set high standards, and to help students to understand there’s a connection between being in school and being successful in life, Browning said.
educational endeavors. After school, she moved to New York, where she worked as a college recruiter before returning to the Sunshine State. Back in Florida, Smithey continued a role in academics, but this time catering to a much younger demographic. At Spring Hill’s Classical Preparatory School, she taught reading, writing, mathematics and science to fourth-graders. Currently, she’s an admissions recruiter at the Land O’ Lakes branch of Rasmussen College. She enjoys her work, but she also has
felt a tug to return to the stage. So, instead of thinking about it, she told herself:“Why don’t I just get out there and do it, even if it’s not professional.” She then took to Facebook to see what local theater productions were available. Off the heels of her Cabaret performance, the actress didn’t hesitate in auditioning for “The Little Mermaid” musical. So, once she landed the role, she began sharing her time between work and rehearsals for the production, which just wrapped up at the University Area Cultural
Development Center in Tampa. Playing in the lead role was an honor, and gratifying, too, Smithey said. “It came [as] a complete shock to me. It was like ‘Wow, these people have faith in me,’” she said. Even as the experience rekindles her love for acting, the teacher within Smithey can’t help but see her experience as an opportunity teach youths a lesson. She said it gives her a chance to tell them: “There’s always going to be obstacles, but if you put the work in, it really pays off.”
“This robot can stretch out all the way across the patient and can go to any access point. It’s driving the wires and balloons through your artery, through your arm and all the way up to your heart,” he said. In addition to being inserted through the forearm, it can also go through the femoral arteries in the thighs. Although patients have limited exposure to radiation during a stent procedure, medical staff have higher safety risks that are two-fold, Davis added. Despite wearing lead suits for precaution, staff are still exposed to radiation as they spend time around X-ray equipment. The weight of the lead suit can also pose risks of spinal injury. However, with the CorPath GRX, medical staff can work from their console station and keep a safe distance from the X-ray ma-
chine, while using the robot to operate. Dr. Cambier said patients benefit because the machine reduces the chance of a medical error during the procedure. “This allows us to raise the bar of existing equipment to a more precise fashion,” the cardiologist said.“It takes all of the variables of a human out, in terms of tremors [and] fatigue.” While this is a new feature in the Bay Area, it has had considerable growth in the United States and abroad after being introduced in 2017. There are more than 60 devices in use across the U.S., and the device is reaching such countries as Singapore, Japan, China and Brazil, Davis said. The system also allows doctors to perform remote procedures. “We’ve already done our first remote
case in India where the physician was 20 miles away from the patient,” Davis explained.“That was done all wireless.” Both Cambier and Davis pointed out that this technology is only advancing as efforts are underway to broaden its use into neurology. This would allow stroke victims to receive treatment from their operating physician, while in another region of the globe. Last year, Cambier had to travel to Texas to train and acclimate himself to the new device. However, he welcomes other Bay Area physicians to train locally at Medical Center of Trinity and understand the robotic benefits. “It starts making things much more uniform,” he said. “Uniformity leads to more consistent outcomes and [that’s] good for the patients of the Tampa Bay Area.”

Spring football preview: Hillsborough County
W By Kevin Weiss
kweiss@lakerlutznews.com
ith the 2019 high school football season just mere weeks away — preseason classics begin Aug. 16 and regular season kicks off Aug. 23 — we take a look at how Hillsborough County teams in The Laker/Lutz News coverage area stack up. Next week, we’ll preview Pasco County teams.
THE TEAMS HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY SCHOOLS (2018 RECORDS)
A CLOSER LOOK AT EACH TEAM CARROLLWOOD DAY SCHOOL PATRIOTS Head coach: Mark Jones (fourth year) Carrollwood Day is coming off its best season in the Mark Jones era, going 6-6 and reaching the Class 2A region semifinals. However, the Patriots have big shoes to fill with the graduation of one of the area’s most prolific quarterbacks in Chris Butash (now at Division I Holy Cross) and the transfer of do-everything athlete Shelton Quarles Jr., to Calvary Christian in Clearwater. Breaking in a new quarterback, the Patriots will look to rely heavily on senior athlete Reidel Anthony Jr., the son of former Tampa Bay Buccaneer wideout Reidel Anthony.
SCHEDULE
at St. Petersburg Catholic (Aug. 23, 7 p.m.) Northside Christian (Aug. 30, 7 p.m.) Seffner Christian (Sept. 13, 7 p.m.) Admiral Farragut (Sept. 20, 7 p.m.) Lake Highland Prep (Sept. 27, 7 p.m.) at Calvary Christian (Oct. 4, 7 p.m.) Trinity Catholic (Oct. 11, 7 p.m.) Cambridge Christian (Oct. 18, 7 p.m.) at St. John Neumann Catholic (Nov. 1, 7p.m.)
FREEDOM HIGH SCHOOL PATRIOTS Head coach: Chris Short (first year) The Freedom Patriots will have its third coach in as many years, as Chris Short takes over for Henry Scurry (2018), who took over for Floyd Graham (2016-17). Short, who also coaches girls flag football and was named the sport’s 2018-2019 Hillsborough County’s Western Conference National Division Coach of the Year, will look to translate that to a Patriots program seeking its first winning season since 2014. Working in his favor is a seemingly manageable 2019 slate with just three teams who went above .500 last season. The Patriots, however, must find a way to replace the offensive and defensive backfield production of several of last year’s seniors, including Division I talent Jeremiah Ashe, who signed with Florida Atlantic University.
SCHEDULE
at Steinbrenner (Aug. 23, 7:30 p.m.) Robinson (Sept. 9, 7:30 p.m.) Spoto (Sept. 13, 7:30 p.m.) at Wharton (Sept. 20, 7:30 p.m.) at Land O’ Lakes (Sept. 27, 7:30 p.m.) Middleton (Oct. 4, 7:30 p.m.) at Fivay (Oct. 11, 7:30 p.m.) Alonso (Oct. 18, 7:30 p.m.) Gaither (Oct. 25, 7:30 p.m.) at Leto (Nov. 1, 7:30 p.m.)
GAITHER HIGH SCHOOL COWBOYS Head coach: Kirk Karsen (third season) Gaither seems poised to build off backto-back 7-4 seasons and playoff appearances with a roster that has no shortage of play-
makers. Key among them is the return of accurate and efficient signal-caller Tony Bartolo and Division I-caliber prospects in cornerback Jordan Oladokun (offers from Florida International and Southern Miss) and linebacker Chance Coleman, a University of South Florida commit. Buoyed by a balanced offensive attack last season, the Cowboys look for someone to fill the shoes left behind by Jeromy Reid, who tallied more than 1,000 scrimmage yards in both his junior and senior campaigns.
CARROLLWOOD DAY SCHOOL PATRIOTS 6-6 OVERALL, 2-2 REGION
SCHEDULE
at Jefferson (Aug. 23, 7:30 p.m.) Plant (Aug. 30, 7:30 p.m.) at Plant City (Sept. 6, 7:30 p.m.) East Bay (Sept. 13, 7:30 p.m.) Fivay (Sept. 27, 7:30 p.m.) at Chamberlain (Oct. 4, 7:30 p.m.) Land O’ Lakes (Oct. 11, 7:30 p.m.) at Tampa Bay Tech (Oct. 18, 7:30 p.m.) at Freedom (Oct. 25, 7:30 p.m.) Armwood (Nov. 1, 7:30 p.m.)
STEINBRENNER HIGH SCHOOL WARRIORS Head coach: Andres Perez-Reinaldo (eighth season) After a disappointing 2-7 campaign in 2017, the Steinbrenner Warriors bounced back with a respectable 6-5 mark last season, closing the year with four straight wins. Expect that positive momentum to continue again this year, as the roster, like Gaither, features a lengthy list of Division I prospects, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. Among them are incumbent starting quarterback Haden Carlson (Florida International commit), wide receivers Aidan Bitter (Iowa State commit) and Dean Patterson (Southern Miss offer), tailback Deon Silas (offers from South Alabama, South Florida, Southern Miss) and offensive lineman Matthew Adcock (offers from South Alabama, Southern Miss), among others. Another overlooked bonus comes on special teams, with the return of All-State punter Cameron Brown and reliable kicker Trevor Haire. Perhaps the biggest impediment to the team’s success is a relatively difficult slate that includes Tampa Bay perennial powerhouses in Hillsborough and Plant, as well as Chamberlain and Sickles high schools. Regardless, the Warriors figure to be an exciting team, with plenty of high-scoring outputs.
FREEDOM HIGH SCHOOL PATRIOTS 4-6 OVERALL, 2-4 DISTRICT
GAITHER HIGH SCHOOL COWBOYS 7-4 OVERALL, 4-2 DISTRICT
SCHEDULE
Freedom (Aug. 23, 7:30 p.m.) at Sickles (Aug. 30, 7:30 p.m.) at Spoto (Sept. 6, 7:30 p.m.) Alonso (Sept. 13, 7:30 p.m.) Hillsborough (Sept. 20, 7:30 p.m.) at Plant (Oct. 4, 7:30 p.m.) at Blake (Oct. 11, 7:30 p.m.) Palm Harbor University (Oct. 18, 7:30 p.m.) at Wharton (Oct. 25, 7:30 p.m.) Chamberlain (Nov. 1, 7:30 p.m.)

Creating a permanent place of honor Efforts continue to create a memorial for law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com
I
f all goes according to organizers’ desires, Pasco County will join the state’s 66 other counties and will establish a permanent memorial for law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. Those behind the effort hope the memorial will be ready for use next year, during the Pasco County ceremony held annually to honor members of the law enforcement community who began their shift, like any other day, but never made it home. Craig Laporte, a Port Richey attorney, is one of the key players working to establish the memorial. The initiative was launched in 2014 by some members of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge in Land O’ Lakes, Laporte said. They created the Pasco County Fallen Law Enforcement Officers Memorial & Benefit Foundation Inc., Laporte said. In addition to the goal of creating a memorial, the foundation also seeks to help families of fallen law enforcement officers, or officers severely injured on duty. “Coincidentally, at about the same time, my wife Arndrea and I decided that we wanted to do something to thank the families of law enforcement officers for what they go through on a daily basis,” said Laporte, who was a Pasco deputy before getting his law degree. He and his wife saw firsthand the unpredictable nature of the work, and the sacrifices made by officers and their families, Laporte said. They decided to organize a Family Fun Day to give law enforcement personnel and their families a chance to gather together to have a good time. The day includes a meal, and fun activities for kids and adults. Area businesses and organizations help to pay for the festivities. The first year, the Family Fun Day drew about 250 people; this year, there were 750, representing 17 agencies, Laporte said. After paying the expenses the first year, there was $5,000 left over that was donated to the memorial fund, Laporte said. This past year, $14,000 was donated, said Laporte, who also became involved with the memorial foundation’s board. Originally, the FOP wanted to have the memorial at their private lodge site in Land O’ Lakes, but they agreed to change the location to erect the memorial in a public setting. The Pasco County Commission also approved a request to locate the memorial at the northwest corner of the grounds of the Historic Pasco County Courthouse in Dade City. The historic courthouse is the same place where the annual Fallen Law Enforcement Officer Memorial events have been held, according to accounts published in The Tampa Tribune and The Tampa Bay Times. Those events have been solemn affairs, sometimes attended by hundreds of people, according to published reports. They’ve been marked with the pageantry of law enforcement — a riderless horse, two boots sitting backward in the stirrups, escorted across the courtyard; a bagpiper playing “Going Home;” a bugler playing “Taps;” and words of consolation, and appreciation, for lives cut short too soon. Next year, organizers hope the event will be held at the permanent memorial. The memorial was designed free of charge by Ardurra, formerly known as King Engineering Associates Inc., of Tampa, Laporte said.

Clark Lohmiller, Planning and Landscape Group Leader for Ardurra, has been involved in the design since Day 1. He decided to contribute his skills after being approached by Terry Edmonson, of the Pasco Sheriff’s Office, who had an obvious passion for the project. Lohmiller said Jason Marques of the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office also has been involved, and that John Galbavy and Kevin Velinsky, also from Ardurra, have lent their expertise on the project. The memorial’s design was influenced

by one in Texas, which features a sculpture of an angel carrying a fallen officer up to heaven at the center of it, Lohmiller said. Laporte said Brodin Studio in Minnesota is creating the sculpture for the Pasco memorial. He also described what the public can expect to see. “It’s going to be designed really spectacularly,” he said. “It’ll be a black stone base down on the ground. And, it’ll be narrower than this, but it will be a thin blue line of glass block that’s illuminated from underneath, so at night, it will be an illuminated thin blue line. “Then, the statue also will be illuminated, with LED lighting, and the names of the fallen officers will be around the pedestal,”
Laporte said. “Hopefully, it will be well-received and something that showcases the support that Pasco County has — and the community wants to have — for the fallen officers, and just the officers in general. I’m honored to be a part of it,” Lohmiller said. LaPorte said his law partner, Frances Werner-Watkins, also has a personal interest in the memorial. She is related to Sheldon Nicks and William O’ Berry, two of the fallen officers honored each year. Efforts continue to raise the money needed to complete the project, Laporte said. So far, about $220,000 of the $300,000 needed has been raised.Anyone who would like to make a donation, or contribute in other ways, can reach out to Laporte at (800) 273-8303.

FOSTER PARENTS NEEDED
IGUANA REMOVAL INFO
The Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center currently has no dogs in foster care and is in need of residents to foster dogs for 30 days to 90 days. The shelter’s dog population is at 115 percent of capacity, and fostering helps to open up valuable kennel space, as well as giving special care and attention to particularly vulnerable pets. Foster parents help dogs learn socialization skills that can help them get adopted and provide information to prospective adopters on the dog’s personality traits, which can make for a perfect match. Pet foster parents are responsible for providing love, food, care, exercise and fun for the dog. The Pet Resource Center provides all medical attention the dog needs while in foster care. And, if the foster parent wants to adopt the dog, the adoption is free. For information, call (813) 744-5660.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) wants residents to know that green iguanas are an invasive species in Florida, meaning that they’re not native to our state. Iguanas can cause considerable damage to infrastructure, including seawalls and sidewalks. Like all invasive species, iguanas are not protected in Florida, except by anti-cruelty law. While the species cannot be relocated, iguanas can be removed from private property with landowner permission. However, “The message has been conveyed that we are asking the public to just go out there and shoot them up.This is not what we are about; this is not the ‘wild west.’ If you are not capable of safely removing iguanas from your property, please seek assistance from professionals who do this for a living,” said FWC Commissioner Rodney Barreto, in a release. For information, visit MyFWC.com.

LOCAL WILDLIFE
Carter loves to explore Carter arrived at the shelter in June with several other kitties. Carter is a stunning man who loves to climb and explore his environment. He currently resides in the Feline Freedom room. Carter is already neutered, microchipped and vaccinated, and ready to go on to his furever home.
A tropical, wetland bird
Fran Sieradzki snapped this photo of a limpkin behind her home in Seven Oaks, in Wesley Chapel. The limpkin, also called carrao, courlan or crying bird, looks like a large rail, but is skeletally closer to a crane. It is found mostly in wetlands in warm parts of the Americas, from Florida to northern Argentina.
DID YOU KNOW?
Readers can now find Pets of the Week and Local Wildlife photos on our website at LakerLutznews.com, under the Pets/Wildlife link. Martha is feeling great Martha is a beautiful pup that first arrived at the shelter as a stray in June. When she arrived, she had very bad flea allergy issues and was missing a good amount of hair, along with skin infections. After several weeks of treatment and pampering, Martha is feeling tremendously better and is hoping to find her furever home soon.
If you would like to adopt Carter or Martha, be sure to visit Pasco County Animal Services at 19640 Dogpatch Lane in Land O’ Lakes. The adoption center is open Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 6:30 p.m. All adoption fees include spay/neuter, microchip and vaccines. For more information, email adoptionpartners@pascocountyfl.net.
