When the state released its school grades last month, the news wasn’t good for numerous Pasco County schools, or for the district itself. “The Friday that grades were released, it was not a good day for me. Nor the district,” Superintendent Kurt Browning said at a school board workshop on the issue on Aug. 2. The state’s report showed a number of Pasco schools slipping a grade, and the district, itself, slipping from a B to a C. On one hand, Browning said, school grades don’t paint a complete picture of a school. “There’s a lot more that goes into a

school than just a single school grade,” he said. On the other hand, he noted: “People judge the quality of a school based on the school grade, and I get that.” Kurt Browning There were changes in the way the grades were calculated this year, Browning said. But he added:“You had 66 other districts that were operating under the same rules.” The district is assessing where it is and why it saw changes, particularly in the increase of C and D schools, Browning said. “We are really trying to assess why we

are where we are,” Browning said. “We were at 34 (34th in the state) when I took office. We went to 33. Now, we’re at 39,” he said. “Anyway you cut it, slice it or dice it, we’re 39th – and that is not something that appeals to me at all. “I do think there are things that we can do, that will move the needle,” Browning said. But he noted, there are no easy fixes. “I learned a long time ago that the art of educating kids is not like building a widget. You don’t start out with a table full of parts, and at the end of the assembly line they all look the same and function the same,” he said. Hillsborough County public school students are heading back to school this week, and their counterparts in Pasco County public schools begin next week. Whether they’re streaming to Lutz Elementary School, Steinbrenner High, Liberty Middle, an area charter school or to a private school — the beginning of a new school is a time that’s always marked with fresh starts and new enthusiasm. Motorists need to remember that area roads will be busy, as yellow buses hit the streets to pick up children, high school students drive themselves and parents drop off their kids. Adding to the mix are teachers, administrators and other school staff members who will be back on the roads again, too. The motor club also urges parents to talk with their teenage drivers about being safe behind the wheel. “Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the United States, and nearly one in four fatal crashes involving teen drivers occur during the afterschool hours of 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.,” according to the motor club’s website. Kids offer practical advice to battle substance abuse By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

The youths sat at the front of the room, sharing how substance abuse had affected their lives. One lost her 27-year-old brother to an overdose. Another was removed from her drug-addicted mother. Others have relatives or friends who are living with substance abuse problems. Six of the panelists are members of a group called STAND Above the Influence. The acronym stands for Safe Teens AgaiNst Drugs. The group is a team of youth leaders who aim to end youth substance abuse in Pasco County through education. The seventh member of the panel, from PACE School for Girls, shared her personal struggles with drug addiction. She’s in recovery now. Panel members assembled at the Land O’ Lakes Community Center to address a room filled with professionals who work in law enforcement, politics, substance abuse treatment and other fields involved in preventing substance abuse or responding to people with addictions. Parents should avoid sending mixed messages to their kids, panelists said. When parents tell their kids not to smoke, use drugs or drink — the message lacks credibility if the parents are engaged in those activities themselves. Parents need to take the time to talk and

listen to their kids — to really get to know them, one panelist said. “Be open,” the panelist said.“Talk to me like I’m an adult.” Kids and parents need to be able to talk — to not have screaming matches when they disagree, another panelist said. Having crisis counselors and social workers available on campus would help, so that kids could turn to trained professionals, another panelist suggested. It’s important for parents to understand their child’s point of view, another panelist said. More work is needed to reduce the availability of drugs, not only at schools — but also in the home and the community. Prescription pills and alcohol are often readily accessible in the home, panelists said. Drugs are also available on school campuses, and kids develop code words to let other kids know that they have drugs for sale, panelists said. Having occasional sweeps through the school with drug-sniffing canines can help uncover drugs that are hidden on campus, one panelist said. Korean War spy shares wartime experiences By Kevin Weiss

For nearly 50 years, Eddie Ko didn’t tell a soul about the integral role he played during the Korean War. “Not even my wife or my children,” the now 80-year-old said. But for the past 15 years, the Tampa resident has gladly shared the experiences he had as a 14-year-old spy, helping the United Nations throughout the “Forgotten War.” He began sharing his story in 2002, after he began organizing an annual golf outing for Korean War vets at his golf club — the Quail Hollow Golf Course in Wesley Chapel. The outings — held until he sold the course in 2012 — encouraged vets to share their wartime experiences with family and friends. “Most of the Korean veterans who were in combat — they don’t want to talk about it, even though they are heroes,” Ko said.“Just remember, they were only 18 (years old) or 19 years old, and they had to kill somebody in order to survive. “But...it’s my opinion that I feel better when I talk about it and get everything off of my chest,” Ko said. In June of 1950, about 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People’s Army invaded Ko’s homeland of South Korea. They wiped out thousands of civilians, including his Christian missionary parents. “That really hurt my heart,” Ko said. “That day forward, I decided I was not going to be accepting of the (North Korean) army.” His anger possessed him to join the Student Volunteer Army, an anticommunist group of 12 teenage spies spearheaded by a South Korean officer with ties to the U.S. military.

“At 14 years old, you don’t really have patriotism — you have ‘revengism.’The revenge of mine was so mad that I really wanted to help the Americans,” Ko said. For three years, he penetrated enemy lines, and relayed valuable information to U.S. Navy Lt. Eugene Clark. Working as a teenage spy, Ko was the first to discover that Chinese Communist Forces had crossed the border into North Korea to join the fight against the United Nations.That tip prevented U.S. Marines from walking into an ambush of nearly 120,000 Chinese soldiers.

“They didn’t even know that the Chinese were involved,” Ko said. “The lack of intelligence was the biggest fault during the Korean War.” Nearly 34,000 Americans were killed during the Korean War. “A lot of Americans died because they didn’t even know where they were, and who they were fighting,” he said. To gather intel, a young Ko lurked alongside enemy commanders, asking seemingly innocent questions: How many soldiers are here? Are more reinforcements on the way? Where are the heavy tanks? Ko would report his findings to American forces either via radio communication, or in person.

“Many times it was very risky,” Ko said. He used faith to help him handle the stressful moments and constant anxiety. “I became very, very religious at the time and very, very confident in myself,” Ko said. “That’s what helped me survive for three years.” The Korean War came to an end after an armistice was signed on July 27, 1953. North and South Korea remain separate and occupy almost the same territory since the war began. After the war, Ko left South Korea to become a naturalized U.S. citizen. He attended high school in East Orange, New Jersey, and subsequently volunteered for the draft in 1956. He served three years in the U.S. Army, working in counterintelligence and civilian affairs in South Korea. “I thought wearing a U.S. uniform, I could help the Korean people more. I’m so proud I did that,” Ko said. He became a successful businessman, and owned three golf courses in Florida before selling them. Ko now serves as the chairman for the Korean War monument at Veterans Memorial Park, 3602 U.S. 301 in Tampa. He often visits the 20 Korean War veteran’s association chapters throughout Florida. He tells his story, and gives out copies of the book, “Korea Reborn:A Grateful Nation Honors War Veterans for 60 Years of Growth.” Ko presents the book — which is a retrospective look at the Korean War and the prosperity that followed — to help uplift Korean War veterans. “They should be proud of their service,” Ko said.“After 80 percent of Korea was destroyed, now 50 million Korean people live in peace, and it’s one of the strongest economic countries in the world.”

A traffic light, six mannequins, a well-situated picture window – and a love of fashion – are what Nanette Del Valle mixed together to launch her dream job. Nearly six years ago, she left the paralegal world behind to open The White Pear, a women’s formalwear consignment boutique in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. On Aug. 2, she opened her second White Pear boutique in Wesley Chapel, at 1045 Bruce B. Downs Blvd., near County Line Road. The original boutique, which started in her home, eventually settled into a brick-andmortar shop, with five employees and 4,000 dresses. In its infancy, Del Valle would adorn mannequins in glamorous gowns and cocktail dresses. Motorists pausing at a red light by her house would get an eyeful through her picture window. “That was my billboard,” she said “I would change the windows weekly.” A Facebook page, with postings three times a day, also tapped into the social media market.“That’s how it blossomed,” Del Valle said. She started with about 80 dresses. Most came from the closets of friends and family. Many of the dresses at the Wesley Chapel shop came from her Pottsville flagship store. But, already Del Valle said she is receiving consignment gowns locally. Del Valle is sharing retail space with Jennifer Smith, owner of Fancy Frock. Smith opened her bridal shop nearly six years ago, selling wedding gowns as well as women’s formalwear for all occasions. But, she is focusing now on her first love – brides and wedding gowns. “That’s my true passion,” said Smith, a former Pasco County teacher. Del Valle is filling out the shop with formal gowns and dresses for proms, homecomings, informal weddings and special occasions. All of the once-worn dresses are sold on consignment with a 50/50 split on sales.

She also sells new jewelry and shoes. A seamstress is in-house to help with alterations. “It’s a one-stop shop,” Del Valle said. Del Valle and her husband moved to Wesley Chapel about a year ago, getting ready for retirement in sunny Florida. But,The White Pear remains her baby, and the future looks bright as Pasco booms with new development.

Del Valle said she enjoys giving personalized service for customers looking for just the right dress for special occasions.“My husband calls me a memory maker,” she said.

We’re all summoned to battle Zika’s threat

s promised — no, as feared — Zika has come ashore, invading Florida, most likely from Latin America, replicating the first wave of a map from a science fiction movie. Soon, because we are mobile and restless, it could be everywhere. What emerged out of a Ugandan rainforest, a virus that sickens some adults with aches and rashes but is linked to horrific deformities to babies in the womb, has come to America the modern way: not through the vampiric work of infected flying insects, but probably on the wings of Boeing jets, or aboard a luxury cruise ship. Somebody visited someplace where Zika is rampant, picked it up and came home, possibly — because the symptoms in adults often are too subtle to notice — without knowing he was sick. But now that it’s here, it’s most likely mosquitos — specifically the aggressive, daylight-active Aedes (from the Greek for “odious”) aegypti — that will enable its spread. The good news, to the extent that anything regarding Zika can be regarded as good, is that as of late last week, reports of the virus being spread by mosquitos remained contained to Miami. Otherwise, Zika cases across the state, including about a half-dozen in Pasco County and 10 in Hillsborough County, are evidently travel-related. That, of course, could change overnight. An infected person back from vacation goes out for the night, suffers a bite, and what started as an exotic respite in Belize or St. Martin triggers an outbreak back home. Which is why, more than ever, we need to know what’s going on at the Pasco County Mosquito Control District. To be sure, we remain on the front line of beating back the menace of the opportunistic Aedes aegypti, which uses our bad — or at least risky — habits to its reproductive advantage. Mosquitos rely on collections of still water for egg-laying and early stage development. While its cousins prefer natural collection points, such as water lettuce, water hyacinths, ditches and tidal puddles, Aedes aegypti seeks out human-caused pools, everything from discarded tires to bird baths to mop buckets to the kids’ beach toys. If it’s outside and it’ll hold water, it’s

even money the female Aedes aegypti considers it a nursery. Everybody who’s spent time in the South, especially Florida, already knows — or ought to know — this. Oddly, though, it’s usually not until reports of some alarming public health menace makes the news that most of us take a mental inventory of the possible collection sites under our jurisdiction. Well, that and you’re under the icy, cobalt gaze of entomologist Dennis Moore, Pasco’s mosquito control director, who has three words for us:“Drain and cover.” I might have gone with “Dump and cover,” because it sounds more like “duck and cover,” but the message is the same.We should deny Zika’s “vector” mosquito breeding space wherever we can, but because we can’t count on our neighbors, we should cover ourselves (with clothes and effective insect repellant) and our residences (with screens in good repair). Moore says this even as the part of the district’s program with which we are most

familiar — the distinctly orange spray trucks — prepare for another night of going to war with mosquitos out for a “blood meal.” What we might not know, but find reassuring, is the district also employs airborne tactics — a pair of low-flying Aztec airplanes and a couple of helicopters — to attack mosquitos in rural and coastal areas in their larval stage; airboats to kill off lake and pond vegetation that collects water; amphibious vehicles to go where airboats cannot go; and, where vehicular intervention or mass attacks are impractical,

handheld foggers for that personal touch. What we also might not know, but find fascinating, is that craftsmen, welders and mechanics working for the district fabricate much of what Pasco’s mosquito hunters use.This is not due to a lack of offthe-shelf stuff, Moore says, but because his people can take the elemental parts — a Briggs & Stratton engine and a sprayer, for instance — and create the blower linkage that makes a better, cheaper mosquito killer. “And, when it breaks,” Moore says, “we know how to fix it, because we built it.” For instance, those pesticide-holding tanks on the bottoms of the Aztecs? They’re fiberglass sprung from molds fashioned by the machine shop. You can buy them off the rack for about $30,000, Moore explains, but the district’s do-it-themselves tanks cost about one-sixth as much. Meanwhile, back in the lab, researchers are growing mosquitos, which become tiny wriggling and buzzing lab rats for the testing of various types and combinations of mosquito-specific pesticides and growth-inhibitors. And, they know where to spray because of a full-time trapping program. Why the fussiness? Because the Pasco Mosquito Control District is an agency unto itself, with a board (two of whom face reelection challengers in November) and a $6 million budget that corresponds with a line item on Pasco property owners’ tax bills. Being responsible for itself means being able to pivot more quickly when conditions change. Nobody has to go to the county commission for an emergency budget adjustment. On that front, nothing changes until it does, Moore says,“and then, it’ll change fast and a lot.” To meet the challenge, the agency would add staff and ramp up training, both of which could challenge the district’s bottom line. If that happens, the three-member board will have some choices to make. But they will be their choices, not the choices of a county commission with layers of concerns. For now, the capable folks at the district will do what they can to make our next barbecue, sidewalk cafe visit, after-work golf getaway or trip to the park as nuisance-free as science can make it. Nobody seems to know for sure if Coolidge visited Dade City Knowing Your History By Doug Sanders

bout a year ago, my first history column for The Laker/Lutz News posed the question: “Did President Calvin Coolidge have lunch in Dade City?” Since that column published, on Aug. 19, 2015, new information has surfaced that keeps the question open. At the July meeting of the Pasco County Historical Society, I reminded those gathered that Dade City didn’t appear to offer much back in 1929, when Coolidge was said to have stopped there for lunch. There’s no doubt President Coolidge was in Florida that year, because he gave a speech at the dedication ceremony for Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales. It’s possible he could have stopped at the Edwinola in Dade City, if he took a detour and came to the area on the Seaboard Airline Railroad. The Edwinola opened as a hotel in 1912. There, Coolidge could have enjoyed the tea dances held with an orchestra at one end of the large porch. But, the Valencia Restaurant was not open for business. Neither was the Crest Restaurant. Lunch on Limoges would not serve its famous pecan chicken until 1981. And,A Matter of Taste restaurant did not open until 1997. So why does rumor have it that he lunched at the Gray Moss Inn? Supposedly, there was a connection between Coolidge and the owners of the Gray Moss Inn. However, I was never able to confirm that lead. After my first column was published, though, I heard from Susan Maesen, of Dade City.

She wrote: “Mr. Sanders, I am sorry I didn’t have the opportunity to give you information concerning this article.” As the daughter of Jack Dudley, Susan has memories of her family running the Gray Moss Inn after the death of her grandmother. “There were ledgers that each guest had to sign in,” she wrote.“I cannot verify that Coolidge signed a ledger. I can verify my dad telling me that he visited.” In last year’s column, I indicated there were unconfirmed “tips” that the old guest registry wound up in the hands of Dr. R. D. Sistrunk, who lived a few blocks down the street across from the First Baptist Church. Now, I know from Susan, that Dr. Sistrunk was her grandfather on her mother’s side. But, did the Pasco County Historical Society know that Coolidge’s train may have stopped briefly in the early morning hours at Trilby?

Dade City Commissioner Scott Black, who grew up in Trilby, said he was told by the late Clifford Couey, that no one got off the train when it stopped in Trilby, before it departed from there traveling on the Orange Belt Railway en route to St. Petersburg. I was unable to independently confirm that Coolidge’s train did stop in Trilby. But a year later, it can be documented that Coolidge appeared at the Vinoy Park Hotel, in St. Petersburg, on Jan. 24, 1930. After my original column on Coolidge was published, “Georgia Marble Company” Daniel Wright, of Citrus Springs, wrote: “Perhaps something new will turn up in a private collection that will confirm it one way or the other.” That is still a real possibility. So, please, look through your closets and check your attics. If you can find evidence that Coolidge visited Dade City in 1929, I’d love to see it and to share it with readers of this column, which is published regularly in The Laker/Lutz News. Pasco County’s hotel market is thriving. Five hotels are either under construction, closing in on a groundbreaking or will open within months. County Schools has added a gifted education program at Denham Oaks. Parents of the Wesley Chapel students had complained their children would be losing those services, so the Pasco County School Board added gifted services. ABUSE, from page 1A drugs. Some do it because of peer pressure and the desire to fit in. Others use drugs to cope with whatever pressures they are facing. Some want to experiment. Others, to rebel. Drug use is often glamorized in popular culture, and Snapchat, Instagram,Twitter and other social media channels often give the appearance that people who are using drugs are having the time of their lives, some panelists said. Those social media posts can make people who are at home watching television want to join the kids who seem to be having such a good time, panelists added. But there are other ways to fit in, they

said. Kids can join teams, or clubs, or find some other way to be involved and have fun. Joining organizations such as STAND offers opportunities to attend conferences, give presentations and take part in other events, panelists said. Behavioral health classes would help, too, a panelist said. Kids need to have a better idea of the effect that substance abuse has on their brains and their bodies. There’s also a lot to be said for having a chance to listen to someone who has suffered through the struggles of addiction and is now in recovery, panelists said. The key, one panelist said, is “staying busy, staying focused.” Another panelist offered this advice for avoiding drug use:“Do stuff that makes you happy.”

he 2016 high school football season is just around the corner and several teams in our coverage area enter the year with intriguing storylines, standout players and must-see matchups.

THREE TEAMS TO WATCH: SUNLAKE SEAHAWKS The Seahawks enter the 2016 campaign with plenty of momentum, especially after a 54-13 thrashing of Hernando High School in their spring game.The Seahawks look to build on that May 20 victory, as well as their 8-3 mark in 2015. If not an improved team,Wiregrass Ranch High School should at least be an interesting one. The Bulls, who haven’t had a winning season since 2010, are stacked with Division I prospects — led by juniors Jordan Miner and Shamaur McDowell. Several new faces are expected to make an impact, as well, starting with former AATL two-way player Daniel Biglow, and A.J. Brown, a rangy wide receiver from Carrollton,Texas.Another player to keep an eye on is sophomore quarterback Grant Sessums, who’s opened eyes at various statewide football camps this summer.While a talented bunch, the biggest key to having more success is staying healthy all yearlong. Last season, Mark Cantor’s Bulls suffered 19 season-ending injuries, virtually crawling to a lethargic 2-8 finish.

ZEPHYRHILLS BULLDOGS The Bulldogs are entering the 2016 season with a first-time head coach and several unproven players. Nick Carroll — a longtime Sunlake High School assistant — has big shoes to fill in taking over for the revered Reginald Roberts (39-23 in six seasons).The pressure to win immediately will be elevated, considering the program’s recent triumphs. But, winning won’t come easy, considering the Bulldogs’ top offensive playmaker — running back Antwione Sims — will miss several FILE PHOTO games due to injury. THREE PLAYERS TO WATCH: ZEPHYRHILLS SENIOR RUNNING BACK ANTWIONE SIMS

Depending on when one the of the area’s most electrifying playmakers returns to the field, fans will surely flock to the stands to see the 5-11, 196-pound Sims (2,093 rushing yards, 24 TDs.) The senior is likely to miss “most of the season” after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in March, but a possible late-season return could prove vital for the Bulldogs down the stretch. Once he returns to the gridiron, it will be interesting to see if Sims still has the same quickness and speed he showed in 2015. A consensus three-star recruit, Sims has 11 scholarships offers, which includes Boston College and Navy.

SUNLAKE SENIOR RECEIVER/LINEBACKER CRIS GALDOS

What Galdos lacks in measurables, he more than makes up for with his production. The 5-foot-7, 170-pound do-it-all playmaker is widely viewed as one of the most versatile football players in Pasco County. His offensive statistics (21 receptions, 224 yards, 2 TDs) coupled with his defensive prowess (81 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, four sacks, four interceptions) are a key to Sunlake’s continued success. His workout numbers are also impressive: 4.60 40-yard dash, 30-inch vertical jump, 290-pound bench press and 405-pound squat. Galdos recently received his first scholarship offer (University of Saint Francis in Indiana) and is likely to receive a few more by the season’s end.

WIREGRASS RANCH JUNIOR DEFENSIVE BACK JORDAN MINER

Pasco County typically doesn’t produce many Division I football prospects on an annual basis, so it’s always worth noting when a player entering just his junior year already has five DI offers— Bowling Green University, Middle Tennessee State University, University of South Florida, University of Toledo and Tulane University. At 6-foot-1, 185-pounds, Miner has the size that major college programs crave in a defensive back. In seven games last season, Miner made an impact in both the second-

Former Pasco player now on Hornung watch list Former Pasco High football star and current Rutgers University senior receiver/return specialist Janarion Grant, was named to the national Paul Hornung Award watch list — which recognizes the most versatile player in major college football. Grant, a 2013 Pasco High graduate, finished second in the Big Ten with 1,583 all-purpose yards (984 kick returns, 352 receiving, 167 punt returns, 80 rushing) last season. The Hornung Award is named after Paul Hornung, the 1956 Heisman Trophy winner who played every position in the offensive backfield during his career at the University of Notre Dame. The watch list includes 42 other Division I football players.

For many, it is a new direction in their lives. “This is a dream for some people,” said Whitney Elmore, Pasco County extension director. “It can be the start of something bigger.We can help them do that.” About 75 people attended the inaugural Tampa Bay Cottage Industry Expo on July 30 at Wiregrass Ranch High School in Wesley Chapel. The daylong workshop gave participants a chance to learn from experts from the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, the Florida Department of Agricultural and Consumer Sciences, and cottage industry entrepreneurs. The expo laid the groundwork for what organizers hope will become an annual event. The Pasco Economic Development Council created an International Committee, which had its first meeting on July 15. Pasco County Commission Chairwoman Kathryn Starkey will chair the committee. Other members include the Pasco EDC staff; and business leaders from technology, manufacturing, banking, retail, tourism, real estate development, workforce development, and legal sectors from Pasco. Participating state and regional organizations include Enterprise Florida, Port Tampa Bay, Tampa Bay Trade & Protocol, the Small Business Development Center at the University of South Florida, and the Franco-American Chamber of Commerce. The International Committee will focus on assisting Pasco County businesses with export sales and global supply chain development, as well as attracting new foreign investment. Members will meet bi-monthly at various locations in the county.
