Taking aim at traffic woes By Kathy Steele ksteele@lakerlutznews.com
A transit study will take a regional approach in trying to identify a solution to unsnarl Tampa Bay’s traffic congestion, and, qualify for federal aid. Jacob Engineering will conduct the 24month study for Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties. The approximately $1.5 million cost will be paid for by the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority, commonly called HART and the Florida Department of Transportation, called FDOT for short.

A transit study will seek solutions for congestion problems in Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties. One logjam motorists often face is at the intersection of U.S. 41 and State Road 54 in Land O’ Lakes.
Consultants are expected to begin work on Oct. 1, following expected approval of the contract by HART on Sept. 12. Commuter rail, light rail, bus rapid transit service and express bus service will be among transit alternatives reviewed in the study. “Tampa Bay is one of the very few large regional areas that does not have premier transit service to connect its region,” said Steve Feigenbaum, HART’S director of service development. “This is a truly regional study, a three-county study, for transit opSee TRAFFIC, page 13A

The teddy bear drive at Lowe’s Home Improvement store, at State Road 54 and U.S. 41, started with a big, empty cardboard box, placed by the sliding door entrance. “The empty box first started the conversation,” said Lowe’s store manager Derek Walter.
Please be sure to include what kind of animal it is, and where you took the picture. Also include your ur contact information, so we can get in touch with you, if we need to.
Just why was the box there? A hand-drawn picture of a teddy bear quickly appeared on the side of the box, and employees began dropping huggable bears inside. Customers soon noticed and began doing the same. On Sept. 9, about 175 teddy bears were given to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office to help deputies who respond to domestic vio-
lence situations and need a comforting toy to hand out to children under stress. Employees initially began talking about a community outreach project when the teddy bears came up. Once started, employees ran with the idea. One day, Walter went shopping at Walmart and took an armful of bears to the check out line. A customer in line asked about the bears. When he explained the teddy bear drive, Walter said she liked the idea. And soon after, he said, “She came by (Lowe’s) with some bears.” Store employees plan to repeat the drive at least once a year. “It’s a different way to give,” said Walter.

chestra director, and Corey Poole, choir director. “All of us are just bonding together, and we want the students to feel like everyone is important, and everyone is involved with each other’s performances,”Allgair said. At least one band member, James Wall, relishes the idea of more alliances and partnerships with other fine arts departments. “I think it’s cool that we’re kind of expanding our horizons,” the high school senior said.“Doing more things, using other departments, working together — we didn’t do it that much in the past.” That philosophy spreads to Friday nights throughout the fall, where the band and Steinbrenner’s cheer squad will no longer be separate entities during home football games. Instead, they’ll be performing jointly — in the name of school spirit. “I believe in the hometown feel,” said
Board members of the Pasco Metropolitan Planning Organization have adopted a priority list for road projects that is largely unchanged from last year. But, there is one exception:The list now includes a plan to widen U.S. 301 to a fourlane divided highway from the Hillsborough County line to State Road 56. The five-year work program runs through fiscal year 2020-2021. While there’s little change on the road list, the sidewalk list is a different story. Nine new projects for 5-foot sidewalks are listed as priorities in the 2016-2017 work plan. Six of those in the top 10 have jumped ahead of other longtime sidewalk requests. The shift in priorities prompted questions by Pasco County Commissioner Jack Mariano. Mariano wonders if the ranking system is fair to communities that have waited years for sidewalks. “I’m very disappointed,” said Mariano at the Sept. 8 board meeting of the MPO. Among sidewalk projects that Mariano hoped to see higher on the list were Ranch Road, Zimmerman Road and Majestic Boulevard. Lutz residents also have lobbied over the years for sidewalks on Leonard Road. That project sits in the 20th slot, near the bottom of 25 proposed projects. Mariano said he planned to meet with MPO staff members to review the criteria used to rank projects. MPO Vice Chairman Jeff Starkey also took issue with the criteria. “What if we don’t agree with how you’re calculating this?” he asked.

Steinbrenner marching band director has ambitious plans By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com
Steinbrenner High School’s new marching band director has ambitious plans for the program. Jason Allgair, who spent the past nine years teaching at Wharton High School, is striving to increase band participation. He’s also looking to collaborate with the school’s other fine arts programs — orchestra and theatre. “I believe that all the arts should be together in regards to doing concerts and performances, and supporting each other,” Allgair said.“I love doing full orchestra, I love the collaboration with theater, and doing the musicals. “I’m all about the community environment and the community feel.” Steinbrenner’s musical faculty, including Allgair, is entirely new. Other first-year Steinbrenner teachers are Grace Jeon, or-
Sister Helen’s secrets to a good life: Work hard, love people when I was in in fifth grade,” she recalls in her memoir. But, it wasn’t until she was older that she actually decided to become a nun. “The Spirit does call in the strangest places,” she notes in her memoir.“We were at a dance when Sister Irma (Irma Multer) came dancing by and casually stated to me, ‘Guess what? I’m going to enter the convent in a short time.’ My surprise reply was,‘Wait for me! I’m going with you!”’ So, that’s how she and her four companions wound up on that train to Florida.

Laurina Lange was still a teenager when she traveled by train from Texas to San Antonio to pursue the religious life — by joining the Benedictine Sisters of Florida. The year was 1930, and she was accompanied by four of her cousins — Irma Multer, Pauline Block, and Rosaria and Rosanna Matthiesen. They, too, had decided to answer God’s call. Now known as Sister Helen Lange, the 102-year-old recently shared a few of her memories during remarks at the 125th birthday celebration for the Town of St. Leo, held at Saint Leo University. She told the audience that despite her age, she still enjoys every minute. She also noted that while she began her religious vocation in San Antonio, she was fortunate to travel extensively and do many different kinds of work along life’s path. She told the crowd about a memoir she wrote, called “Kicking the Habit.” It records experiences during her life, in 10-year increments. The title of her memoir doesn’t refer to her kicking the habit of smoking — rather it relates to the time when the requirement was lifted for nuns to wear a style of dress, called a habit. In her memoir, she describes growing up on a farm in Olfen,Texas. Her parents, Joseph and Helena Matthiesen Lange, had five boys and three girls — and all of the children were born at home. It was a family where faith and hard work were cherished values, she writes in her memoir. “Living and growing up on a farm taught us to be very responsible,” the memoir says. “We were taught to be independent and thrifty.” She has many fond recollections about growing up in a family which prayed often, enjoyed making music, and had frequent gatherings with friends and relatives. One of her favorite times of the year was Easter. “Holy Week was truly Holy Week. There were no radios, no running around, no dancing or partying,” her memoir says. “On Holy Saturday, all of us kids were sent out to pick flowers to build Easter nests for the bunny to come. While we were out hunting the flowers, little did we know that mom was busy dying the eggs — which we never saw until Easter morning. “We made small nests with the wildflowers we picked out in the fields. “On Easter Sunday morning, we all tumbled out of bed to see what the Easter bunny had brought. There were eggs of all

THE ‘SPIRIT’ CALLS IN STRANGE PLACES
She enjoyed shopping days with her mother, her memoir reports. Once the necessary items for the household were purchased, the two of them
would stop by the drugstore for an ice cream soda. “They only cost 25 cents back then,” her account says. “Another favorite treat was a chocolate bar with marshmallows and nuts. This was called a Tango. It was only five cents,” the memoir adds. Of course, living on a farm required hard work. There was “cotton to chop, cotton to pick, maize to head, tractors to run, cotton to haul to the gin, repairs to be done.Too many chores to mention,” the book recounts. She believes her family’s deep faith influenced her decision to pursue the religious life. “Family prayers and Sunday obligations, plus monthly confession and communion, were never neglected,” she said. Her Catholic education played a role, too. “I think the seeds of my vocation were planted in fifth grade,” she writes. “The Mother Superior visited our school quarterly,” she adds. As Mother Superior doled out report cards, she would ask the students: “How many of you are going to be priests or nuns when you grow up?” While growing up, she also spent a fair amount of time in the church, putting her musical talents to use. “I played (the children’s) daily mass
Over the years, Sister Helen would be a teacher, a band director and a principal. She would oversee a hostel for visitors from other countries. And, she later she would work in elder care. She also moved around quite a bit. Her first assignment took her back to Texas, but she also worked in New Orleans and Slidell, Louisiana, and in various parts of Florida, including San Antonio,Venice, Sarasota, North Miami, Ocala and Jacksonville Beach. Generally, she didn’t know where she would be teaching until shortly before the school year began, she said during a recent interview. “We were given a little piece of paper in August,” she said, indicating where she would be going. And, it wasn’t always easy to leave the place where she’d been living, she said. “You become attached to the people, to the families,” she explained. But, then she found that she would form the same kind of attachments at the next place she went, she said. “I loved every one of them,” said the former educator who taught everything from kindergarten to sixth grade, and served as a principal, too. “The sixth grade was the most joyful. There were a lot of boys in the class. I loved teaching boys,” she said. She was a tomboy, at heart, she explained. When she was asked, as a young girl, if she wanted a doll for Christmas, her response was:“No, I want a baseball and bat.” Now approaching her 103rd birthday, which is on Sept. 28, Sister Helen still manages to find joy where she is. As she walks down the corridors at Heritage Park Care and Rehabilitation Center in Dade City, she greets residents, asks how they are and takes time to listen. As she reflects on her life, she said she “has no regrets whatsoever” about boarding that train to join the Benedictine Sisters of Florida more than eight decades ago — to follow her spiritual call where it led her. “I’d do it all over again,” she said.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE
My father loved this newspaper By Diane Kortus Publisher
I
never thought it would take this long to write a column about my father’s death. I’ve tried many times to share this news with you, but my sorrow was too raw to write more than a paragraph or two. Donald Valentine Kortus died Jan. 26, in the home where he lived for 60 years in Maplewood, Minnesota. After deciding against treatment for late-stage cancer, he came home from the hospital on a cold winter afternoon to be cared for by his daughters, immersed in his family’s love. My father’s death came fast, but he was good with that. He was already suffering from back pain when he fell down on Christmas Eve, while preparing for the annual Christmas Day festivities that he and his wife, Bettye, always host for their children and their families. The fall added to other pains our father kept from us, which he brushed off as normal for someone who was almost 88 years old. However, after Christmas his pain intensified and his mobility decreased, and Dad began to lose the independence he valued so much. After his second hospitalization within two weeks, I decided to fly home on a Friday afternoon to see Dad and help with his care. Just five days later, he was gone. To lose a parent is always difficult. But, for me and my brothers and sisters, to lose our father was unthinkable. Our mother had died 40 years earlier when she was just 48, and our father was left to parent by himself 10 children between the ages of 10 and 24. I sometimes wonder if our mother had not died so young, whether Dad would have become such a remarkable father — the type our cousins and friends envied,

and one who became a surrogate father to so many. In the 1960s and ‘70s, he was a hardworking father who held down two jobs to support his family. He had little time to parent, outside of being the disciplinarian when our mother needed help. But, after Mom died, Dad seemed to seamlessly make the transition to becoming both mother and father. His enduring love, patience, forgiveness, guidance, and unabated belief and support of our dreams, was the foundation that shaped the lives of his children, grandchil-

dren and all the others whom Dad embraced as part of his family. It’s important to know that my father’s Catholic faith was central to his life. So when his doctors told him he had no more than a few months to live, my father said with all certainty that he did not fear death and could not wait to enter the Kingdom of God. Dad told us this on Saturday, and we brought him home on Sunday. Monday afternoon at 3 p.m., his parish priest gave him the last Sacraments, and his daughters watched him take his last breath Tuesday

morning at 3:45 a.m. Dad asked us not to mourn his death, but to celebrate his life and to pray for his entry into heaven. But of course, we did mourn, and still do. We think about him every day — I often reach for the phone to call him with news about my children, or seek advice about the latest challenge facing this newspaper. My, how my father loved this paper. He read it cover-to-cover every week, and often remarked that he knew more about the happenings of Land O’ Lakes and Lutz than he did his hometown. My father is the biggest reason why The Laker and Lutz News are such good community newspapers. Dad would often call me with comments on that week’s stories, and make suggestions on how we could make the paper even better — whether I wanted to hear that or not. He would notice — and worry — when our ad count was down, and shake his fist in disbelief that every business in town wasn’t advertising in such a “fine newspaper that I’m sure everybody reads.” My father was so proud that I was this newspaper’s publisher. I realize now that much of my drive and motivation came from wanting to make him proud. One of my father’s last requests to me before he died was not to write a column about his death. After I wrote about the birth of my grandson last summer, Dad told me that my publisher’s column had run its course. He said my readers were undoubtedly bored with my boastful stories about my children and family, and he said I needed some humility and should find other things to write about. But today — eight months since my father left this world — I have decided to write this column after all. Because I want you to know about the good man who was my father, and of the love he had for this newspaper and me. That love will forever shape the person I am, and these newspapers that I lead.

A citrus king who savored the art of the deal Knowing Your History By Doug Sanders
Special to The Laker/Lutz News
W
hen James Emmitt Evans was 12 years old, he already knew what he wanted to do. He aimed to be “a general business man,” as he liked to call it. By the time he died, at age 96, the Dade City man would have gone on to build one of the first citrus concentrate plants in the state south of Dade City. He is perhaps best remembered for his pioneering strategies to hedge juice inventory on the futures market, and for planting some of the largest contiguous citrus groves in Florida. When he died, his obituary carried the lead headline on the front page of the June 13, 1996 edition of The Tampa Tribune. A half-century before his death, Evans was a vice president on the board of the Pasco Packing Company in Dade City. Other board members were L. C. Edwards Jr., president (whose father was the former head of the Florida Citrus Exchange);W. F. Edwards, vice president (namesake of the football stadium at Pasco High School in Dade City); L.C. Hawes, vice president; and, H.S. Massey, secretary-treasurer. These men, who were all citrus growers, had a combined total of 10,000 acres that could produce 2.5 million boxes of fruit annually for processing at the plant. When the company’s whistle was heard across Dade City at noontime, the Valencia Restaurant in downtown Dade City was often the unofficial “Board Room” for Pasco’s board of directors. Located across from the Historic Pasco County Courthouse at the time, the Valencia was probably the place where plans were discussed to sell the company to Lykes Brothers in Tampa. With the citrus industry changing beyond all recognition, Pasco’s board members recognized how frozen concentrate was letting growers preserve and ship juice with greater efficiency. Only 50,000 gallons of concentrate were produced in the inaugural year of 1945. By 1951, production had zoomed to 31 million gallons. Selling the plant allowed the new owners to change the name to Lykes Pasco Packing in 1961, and to market its labels around the world as “Old South,”

“FloridaGold” and “Vitality.” At its peak, Lykes had more than 2,000 workers on its payroll in Dade City. Unlike any grower in the state at the time, Evans was a trader with his own accounts on the emerging Frozen Concentrate Orange Juice futures market. He was never satisfied with dealing through brokers, buying his own seat and remaining a major force during the formative years of the exchange. “All I can say is, I love making deals,” Evans said, in a Feb. 2, 1983 story published by The Gainesville Sun. Evans Packing Company was one of the first processors to supply other packagers with drums of bulk concentrate for distribution to chain stores. At its peak with some 400 employees, many of Evans’ six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren worked side-by-side with their spouses and in-laws. “If they’re kin, we’ll give them a job,” he was quoted as saying. Evans enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He employed his own pilot, Sam Fallin, who flew the eight-seat, twin engine King Air to the Evans ranch in Homestead, where friends and family could spend a weekend fishing, playing golf, and hunting. Over the years, Evans endured his share of challenges. His citrus groves faced hard freezes, the Mediterranean fruit fly and citrus canker. Despite these harsh realities, Evans started the development of 7,000 acres for production in St. Lucie County in the 1960s. He also began an even larger grove along the Indian River/Okeechobee County lines near the Florida Turnpike during the 1970s. And, the purchase of 10,000 acres for additional groves in Charlotte County was

completed in the early 1980s. Evans did not live to see the outbreak of citrus greening, the agricultural disease with no known cure that has decimated Florida’s citrus production to an all-time industry low. The 1983 Gainesville Sun story identified Evans as one of 21 Floridians on the Forbes magazine list of the 400 wealthiest Americans. At the time, he citrus fortune was estimated at $135 million. Five years later, he was the oldest resident in Florida on Forbes 400 list, with $400 million in holdings — putting him at 157th place on the list. Evans had been successful since the early 1920s, starting off with less than $500 from selling tractors. “I never did have a bad year in business,”

he told The Gainesville Sun.“Not even during the Great Depression.” Despite his wealth and success, Evans lived in the same wood frame, three-bedroom home on the corner of 12th Street and Meridian Avenue in Dade City for 49 years. He headed his family business for 39 years. And, the company he founded in 1951 still remains as one of the largest growers in the state with 12,000 acres of citrus groves. “Retirement is not for me,” Evans was quoted in 1983. “Retirement is the day I die.” It turns out, that’s exactly what happened.

It’s hard to imagine anyone loving his or her job more than Jo-z Wilder — a State Farm agent who recently opened an office in Lutz. “I’ve been providing insurance for 30 years, and I absolutely love it,” exclaims Jo-z, who this past January opened a State Farm location on State Road 54, just east of Livingston Avenue. It was Jo-z’s experience at her husband’s State Farm agency in Spring Hill that brought her to the attention of State Farm officials. “I’m grateful to have this new State Farm office,” said Jo-z. “While I looked at other opportunities in Tampa, I decided to pursue a central Pasco location because of all the new people moving here. “Additionally, State Farm has begun writing new homeowners insurance again in Florida. This has made a lot of customers happy because they have been waiting for that opportunity.” The new office has been such a success that Jo-z already has four experienced licensed agents — Joshua Dike, Kelli Handley, Robert Gomez and Jose Pomales, who additionally speaks Spanish. “I have an incredible team that makes people feel at home in our office,” says Jo-z. “We genuinely care about our customers and our community.” Her new office has taken off, Jo-z says, because people know the State Farm name, recognize its exceptional reputation, and appreciate having a local agent to talk with about their specific insurance and banking needs.
“Many customers begin on the State Farm website, and are surprised to learn there is an actual office in their community,” said Jo-z. “People appreciate our old-fashioned, personal touch, and like that we’re open until 7 p.m., on Tuesday and Thursday. “ Agents are also available outside of regular office hours by appointment. State Farm is the nation’s number one insurer for auto, home and life. Many customers take advantage of discounts offered when buying more than one policy from the company. “We don’t just write insurance policies — we’re not selling a commodity,” said Jo-z. “We find out what’s most important to our customers, and then present products best suited for them.” State Farm also provides banking services, including checking and savings accounts, home and auto loans, and credit cards that earn discounts on insurance premiums. In addition to writing insurance policies for auto, home and property, it also offers insurance for business, life and health. Jo-z has been a Florida resident for 40 years. She grew up on a dairy farm in upstate New York, and still farms today outside of Brooksville. She and her husband, Van Wilder, have four children and four grandchildren. Jo-z is an active member of the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber. Her office serves families in Lutz, Land O’ Lakes, Wesley Chapel and New Tampa. “Please feel free to call or stop by anytime,” said Jo-z. “My team is always happy to meet new residents, and enjoy offering the best coffee and tea around to visitors and customers,” said Jo-z.

TRAFFIC, from page 1A tions for our region.” Feigenbaum made a presentation on the study to members of the Pasco Metropolitan Planning Organization’s board on Sept. 8 in Dade City. About 50 percent of Pasco residents commute to jobs outside the county, he said.“Where are their transit options?” In the past year, Pasco residents have been asked their views on a range of transportation issues, most often focused on traffic congestion in high growth areas such as State Road 54 and State Road 56. A slew of road projects are under construction or under review to reconfigure or widen roads and highways throughout the county. Commuters heading south on Interstate 275 daily confront road lanes jammed with motorists trying to get to work. Recently, FDOT held public meetings to gain support for the Tampa Bay Express, a controversial road project to widen portions of I-275 and Interstate 4. Only limited bus transit links Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties. Feigenbaum said the study will recommend a single project that is doable, links all three counties and would qualify for funding from the Federal Transit Administration, an agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation. Other options will be included in the study, along with reasons why they didn’t make the final cut. Pasco County Commissioner Jack Mariano wondered about the feasibility of purchasing CSX rail lines for future passenger rail service.
BAND, from page 1A Allgair, “where the cheerleaders and the band and that whole atmosphere...is there for the spirit of the school. “It’s all about the support of the football team and the whole feel of what’s happening on Friday nights at Steinbrenner,” he said. Doubling the size of the marching band — which has approximately 120 members— is another objective, albeit more long-term, for the new director. “My goal in the next four or five years is to build this program into a band of 220 to 250,” said Allgair, who’s also the district chair for the Florida Bandmasters Association, overseeing 70 high school and middle school directors.“When I was at Wharton, I started the program with about 49 or 50 kids, and I doubled the program to 110 by the time I left.” He added: “I’m just excited to take what’s already been laid here as a foundation and build upon that. I have a really good relationship with the feeder middle school and all the surrounding feeder middle schools, and we’re going to try to get the numbers up.” Allgair, too, has bold plans in store for the band’s ensembles — concert and jazz — over the next few years. “I’d love for the kids to arrange their own jazz standards, and I can bring in guest artists to work with the ensemble,” explained Allgair.“With the concert ensembles, I’d like to commission new works, I’d like to have composers come in and join us, and actually be a part of the audience as we’re working on their pieces. I have a commission that I’m getting ready...for a composer to actually write a piece — dedicated for the Steinbrenner program — but, I don’t know if that’s going to happen this year or next year,” he added. Also in the works for Steinbrenner’s band: a field trip to New York City. Planned for the end of January, band members can expect to visit several of the city’s cultural institutions, including the Metropolitan Opera House, the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, New York Philharmonic, and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. They’ll also check out Broadway shows, and may get a tour of Yankee Stadium. “We’re all really excited about that,”Wall said about the looming trip to NYC. “It
PROJECTS, from page 1A The lists of road, transit, multi-use paths and sidewalk projects are updated annually and submitted to the Florida Department of Transportation so they can be considered in FDOT’s five-year work plan for federally funded projects in Pasco. Sidewalks, multi-use paths and trails are ranked on a point system based on criteria such as speed limits, connectivity to existing sidewalks and trails, accessibility to schools and transit stops, improved mobility in lowincome and minority neighborhoods, and the consecutive years a project has been on the list. Mariano said communities aren’t getting enough credit for time waited. There also are situations, he said, where speed limits might be low, but safety is still an issue for other reasons. Changes can be made, and projects aren’t automatically done in order of their listing,
The Land O’ Lakes area often is mentioned as an area where rail stops would boost local commercial and residential development. The area includes CSX rail lines crossing through the intersection of U.S. 41 and State Road 54. But, Feigenbaum cautioned against thinking that the study would focus on CSX. “It’s not a CSX study,” he said.“That will be a component of it.” The cost of buying the rail lines would only be a starting point, he said. The rail lines were built for freight and would have to be upgraded to handle passenger service.“There’s still going to have to be some consideration of construction and cost. It’s an important component, but it will be included with everything else.” Feigenbaum said the FTA looks to fund projects that boost economic development and show a return on investment. “Without those particular elements, it becomes just another shelf piece,” he said.“Some (prior) studies have so much dust, they are growing corn. But, that’s another story.” Initially, consultants will look at those previous studies, whether they produced transit projects or not, and compile them into a unified, coherent report. “We don’t want to invent the wheel,” Feigenbaum said. There also will be public outreach with town halls, telephone town halls and other events to gather community opinions. Once the initial study is completed, environmental and design work will be done before an application can be submitted to the federal transit agency. It could take up to five years to qualify for a fully funded grant, Feigenbaum said. “It’s an arduous process.”

As opposed to just taking a select few band members to New York,Allgair’s goal is to send the program’s 120-plus kids to the Big Apple. Approximately $55,000 will need to be raised for the excursion, the band director said. The cost is around $1,000 per student. Students will be paying for part of it, but the rest will come from fundraising efforts that are already underway, he said. The band is currently having a mulch sale through the end of September. Other fundraising opportunities will follow that. “We’ve got a lot going on,”Allgair said. The band’s first major competition is the 20th annual Lion’s Pride Marching Band Festival on Oct. 15 at King High School. The district MPA (Music Performance Assessment) is set for Nov. 5. ‘Baseball Ranch’ opens in Wesley Chapel By Kevin Weiss
kweiss@lakerlutznews.com
A new baseball and softball performance academy has sprung up in Wesley Chapel. The RockStar Baseball & Softball Ranch, which had its grand opening on Sept. 10, is owned and operated by Ryan Pryor, a former varsity assistant coach at Bishop McLaughlin and Wiregrass Ranch high schools. Situated on a five-acre property off of Old Pasco Road and Hadlock Drive, the indoor/outdoor ranch is equipped with several training amenities. It has six batting cages and machines; a pitching arena with five bullpens; various drill fields and ranges; and, 300-foot long toss/throwing lanes. Pryor, who initially began training players out of his garage several years ago, refers to the ranch as an “old-school” training environment. That philosophy starts in the “fit pit,” where players utilize medicine balls and flip tires for total body strength and conditioning workouts. “They’re swinging hammers, they’ve got (water) pails they’re lifting, they’re doing movements...to do the things they need to play this game, because they don’t do that anymore,” explained Pryor.“They’re playing more because of the culture of travel ball and tournaments, and (focusing) less on the physical side — they don’t climb trees, they don’t ride bicycles, they’re not using their shoulders.” Because of that, Pryor noted “throwing injuries have quadrupled over the last 30 years.” Pryor, who compiled a 123-34 record in five years as an assistant high school coach, said the ultimate goal of the ranch is to “bridge the gap” between a player’s potential and his current performance.

Local 9/11 service honors first responders By B.C. Manion

s the nation paused to remember the lives lost in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks 15 years ago this year, Atonement Lutheran Church in Wesley Chapel had a special service to celebrate and honor the community’s first responders. The church, at 29617 State Road 54 in Wesley Chapel, held a 10 a.m. service to celebrate and honor the community’s local police officers, fire and rescue first responders. The church also provided a meal for all guests, and took its hospitality a step further by delivering meals to first responders on duty at area fire stations and sheriff’s department stations serving Wesley Chapel, Zephyrhills, Dade City, Land O’Lakes and Lutz. The church also remembered four-legged first responders by providing special treats for them. On Sept. 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks. Two of the planes were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. The attacks resulted in more than 3,000 deaths, including more than 400 police officers and firefighters. The special service at Atonement Lutheran Church was an expression of gratitude for the work that first responders do every day to serve the community, according to a release announcing the event.
