Pasco schools to beef up security
By B.C. Manion

Pasco County Schools is seeking state approval of a plan that calls for adding security cameras in schools and changing locks on doors at schools throughout the district. The district wants the state to approve the plan, so it can use about $2 million in state money to pay for the security improvements. The security upgrade aims to comply

with a mandate that school districts across the state assess the safety of their schools and produce a plan to improve it. That requirement came in response to the Valentine’s Day shooting spree that left 17 dead and 17 injured at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. Pasco County Schools worked with law enforcement officials from the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office and the New Port Richey, Zephyrhills and Dade City police departments in assessing their school
campuses, according to Assistant Superintendent Betsy Kuhn. After completing those assessments, the district identified themes it could address using the state grant money, said Christopher Stowe, the school district’s director of safety and security. It decided to use the state money to “raise the security of all schools in the county, rather than kind of pinpoint one or two. See SCHOOLS, page 11A

There was a ‘Murder in Margaritaville,’ and women at this gathering were trying to unravel who did it during the annual fundraiser for Women-N-Charge at the Groves Golf & Country Club, 7924 Melogold Circle in Land O’ Lakes. About 160 women attended the lunch, presented by the networking group for professional women. Lucas Magazine was the main sponsor. Funds raised from the event support grants awarded to three local business women, to use in their business or advance their careers. About 150 people, including couples, attended the dinner. Water district officials Ten-year-old uses home décor discuss proposed business to pursue Olympic dreams Pierce Lake guidelines By Kevin Weiss

bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com
The Southwest Florida Water Management District is proposing new minimum levels for Pierce Lake, and held a meeting in Land O’ Lakes recently to explain the changes and accept public comment. Minimum levels are established to protect lakes and wetlands, according to district experts. The minimum level is the limit at which further water withdrawals will cause significant harm to the water resources, and/or the environment. Pierce Lake is southwest of the intersection, between State Road 52 and U.S. 41. It lies within the Gowers Corner Slough basin. Pierce Lake has no significant inflow other than overland flow, and at stages above 72.6 feet, it discharges through a ditch at its southern end across a field, according to materials prepared by the water management district. Both outflows enter the same wetland to the lake’s southwest, the technical report says. It also notes that the topography is flat, and flows are often negligible. Pierce Lake was selected for reevaluation based on development of modeling tools See LAKE, page 11A
In the age of GoFundMe campaigns and other fundraisers — where someone is always seemingly always asking for a handout — 10-year-old Hailey Henderson is using her own hands to try to make her dreams come true. The Wesley Chapel youth has launched a home decor business — Hailey Brooke Designs — stamping personalized books for nearly every occasion. Each sale helps pay for her figure skating lessons at Florida Hospital Center Ice, with her ultimate goal to compete in the Olympics. Though she’s only been skating for a year, Henderson has experienced almost immediate success. This past skating season, the Weightman Middle School sixth-grader won two competitions in her division — the 16th annual Labor Day Invitational, in Fort Myers; and, the 2018 Southwest Florida Fall Classic, in Ellenton. She also earned a second place finish at the 2018 Orange Blossom Open, in Oldsmar. The rink is Henderson’s happy place. As she gracefully skates across the ice, she doesn’t have a care in the world. “You don’t have to think about school, you don’t have to think about homework,

PHSC promotes ‘Unity’ at annual Peace Week By Brian Fernandes
bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com
Pasco-Hernando State College hosted its 11th annual Peace Week Celebration from Sept. 24 to Sept. 28. The event — held on college’s campuses Dade City, Brooksville, Wesley Chapel, Spring Hill and New Port Richey — celebrated a theme of unity. The intent was to bring participants together — to embrace each other’s differences and to stand up for what is right. The weeklong celebration was open to faculty, students and the community, offering outdoor food, music, yoga classes, lectures and a workshop with Buddhist monks. Laura Raposa, a Pasco-Hernando State College (PHSC) coordinator at the Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch in Wesley Chapel, said the week offered the opportunity for important discussions about various issues. The idea behind the annual celebration is to give students and those in the community a platform to express themselves on what they think matters, said Raposa, now in her third year of Peace Week at PHSC. “We really wanted to do something that was important today and signified where we want to be,” she said of the agenda for Peace Week. Mason Fitzpatrick, a transgender man, visited PHSC’s different branches to explain his journey in a lecture series called “Stand Together.” In addressing the audience, he aimed to improve understanding about the identity issues that come with wanting a transition. Pasco Sheriff’s Cpl. Alan Wilkett made stops at several campuses for “Coffee with a Cop.” His talk focused on the global issue of human trafficking and ways people can help identify a victim in need. Members of Bikers Against Child Abuse also spoke in a segment called “A Mission of Love.”Their talk focused on how to better support child abuse victims, especially when the victims must testify in court. Like the other PHSC branches, Wesley Chapel’s Porter Campus held an outdoor Unity Festival including a drum circle,

which invited the public’s participation. Those attending festivities at the Porter Campus also were able to create custommade tie-dye shirts and framed paintings. As is traditional, the state college plans to have a day in spring where everyone on campus wears their tie-dye shirts to show solidarity. Throughout the week, professors held workshops on the three Ps of peace: Professional, personal and public. These sessions covered how to maintain a healthy balance in the different areas of one’s own life, while coexisting with others. Another support network present at the event was the Porter Campus’ prayer group. On the first day of the event, they had a booth set up outside, hosted by two sisters, Claudia and Marbelys Alvarez. Now up to 20 members, the club meets once a week on campus for prayer and Bible study. It offers an environment to share thoughts and words of encouragement, the sisters said. During Peace Week, the group’s booth was decorated with baskets of candy and neatly filed envelopes. Each envelope contained different passages of scripture to help brighten the readers’ day and offer hope for the future. “This is just the beginning,” Claudia said, referring to the spiritual guidance offered to those passing by. “Your purpose [is] so big, bigger than just a career, and that’s what I want students to get,” she said.

The annual Old Timers Picnic will be held on Oct. 13, inside the Clayton Building at Pasco County Fairgrounds in Dade City. Traditionally, the event has been hosted by the Burkett family. But, this year’s picnic will be headed by Sam Sessa, along with a committee. Anyone who has lived in Pasco County for 20 years or longer is invited to attend, and those joining in the festivities are welcome to bring their families. There’s no official start time. Food will be set out and ready to eat at noon, but guests are encouraged to come earlier to socialize. The picnic offers visitors the opportunity to reminisce , to look through scrapbooks and old newspapers, and to enjoy a potluck meal. “You get a feeling of camaraderie – talking to your old friends and how the way things used to be,” said Diane Jones, who helps to publicize the event. Attendees are asked to bring their own covered dish to share and tableware, as the setting will be potluck-style.

Paddle Away At Wet Finz By William Jacko Special to The Laker / Lutz News
There is probably no more peaceful way to spend the afternoon than paddling the sparkling ripples of Bell Lake. And your passport to a lake-frolicking adventure can be found at Wet Finz Paddleboard Rentals and More in Land O’ Lakes. For Jackie Jennings, owner of Wet Finz, Bell Lake is more than just a pastime. It’s a passion that has always been there for the Jennings family, who has lived on the lake for three generations. Jennings wants to see more people get outdoors and take advantage of her access to Bell Lake — something not previously available to the public. “This is one of the only zoned commercial areas on the lake with waterfront access,” said Jennings. “We opened our shop because we wanted people to come out and try paddleboarding, do a little fishing and have just fun with their kids.” Wet Finz is a dog-friendly business that rents paddleboards, kayaks and an occasional canoe. People especially enjoy pad-
dleboarding, and Jennings even rents to people who do yoga on the boards. If you work up an appetite while paddling your board or kayak around the lake, do not worry about going hungry. “Our guests paddle right over to Larry’s Deli to get a sandwich,” Jennings said. “It’s two buildings over, and has the best subs in all of Land O’ Lakes.” Wet Finz carries products that protect against the sun’s dangerous ultraviolet rays, including Sun Bum chemical-free sunscreen, Scales swim shirts and Saltwater Hippie clothing. It also sells Snauk shoes, Pura Vida jewelry, fun floatation devices, hats and visors. If Wet Finz is about anything, it’s about enjoying yourself and having fun in the sun. “It’s all about people coming here close to home to enjoy paddleboarding, without having to drive all the way to the beach and saltwater,” said Jennings. A relaxing paddleboard or kayak is waiting for you at Wet Finz. The store is offering a Laker rental discount of $9.99 for the first hour.

Christopher Stowe, director of safety and security for Pasco County Schools, recently outlined the district’s proposed plan to upgrade security at schools throughout the district.
SCHOOLS, from page 1A “We want to make equitable use of the funds that we’re going to be getting with the grants, to make sure all of our schools are going to be increasing their security,” Stowe said. Much of the work focused on determining how the district could improve security using existing work orders, Stowe added, noting improvements, such as repairing or trimming landscaping to improve sight lines on campuses, can be achieved by district staff. The grant money would be used to ensure that all Pasco County Schools have security cameras and that door locks will be changed so that teachers will not need to go outside of their classroom to lock the door. Equipping the schools with security cameras will cost more than $800,000. The new locks ensure that doors are locked at all times. People can leave a room without a key, but can’t enter without a key, unless someone lets them in. It will cost about $1.2 million to change the locks on 3,000 doors. During a presentation on the plan before the Pasco County School Board last week, Superintendent Kurt Browning noted: “I want to make sure that it’s clear that the funds that are being discussed here
are funds that have been specifically appropriated for this purpose. “These are not funds that could be used for raises. These are not funds that can be used for other things,” Browning said. School board member Allen Altman thanked local law enforcement officials for their help on the effort to assess the district’s schools and share their expertise. “In talking to other school districts around the state, they do not have the level of cooperation that we have had, and they are struggling to get this done,” he said. “The fact that this has been a true team effort, and that they have communicated and worked together has been extraordinary — when you talk to other people around the state,”Altman observed. He also noted:“It does make parents and staff feel better to know that everybody is on the same page and working together, and we don’t have the turf battles that have gone on in other places in the state.” School board chairwoman Cynthia Armstrong also expressed her appreciation to local law enforcement agencies for their help. “We very much want to keep that line of communication open,”Armstrong said. No timetable has been established for the security improvements, Kuhn said. The district must await approval of state grant money for its plan before proceeding to have the work done.
LAKE, from page 1A used to simulate nature water level fluctuations in lake basins that were not available when the current minimum lake levels for the lake were developed, the report adds. “The review process does take a very holistic look the way this lake’s levels interact with all various different uses and indicators,” Joel Brown, government affairs manager for the water management district, told those gathered. Such factors taken into consideration include acreage, species in or around the lake, recreational activities and water quality. Minimum and guidance levels for Pierce were first approved in November 2006 and later implemented in 2008. These levels are categorized into four parts, each providing a guideline for what healthy water elevation should look like for any given lake. Environmental scientist David Carr and hydrogeologist Cortney Cameron provided a presentation, detailing how Pierce Lake’s lake levels have varied since 1981. Cameron, who has studied the lake site for reevaluation, explained how Pierce Lake’s level has varied over decades, plus what it would look like without regional ground pumping. “Pierce can fluctuate quite a bit,” she said, during her presentation.“Our records show that it’s fluctuated 8 feet in about two years.” This two-year window occurred from 1998, when records showed elevation at its highest, to 2000, when it was at its lowest. Since then, levels have not varied significantly. The North Pasco well field was Pierce’s closest water source until it was discontinued earlier this year. The nearest well field is now at Cross Bar Ranch, running at 12,500 acres in North-Central Pasco. From 1981 to 2003, it was steadily pumping about 25 million gallons of water a day. In the past 15 years, it has cut down to 12 million gallons. Studies show the correlation between a decline in pumping and the gradual rise of Pierce Lake’s elevation. Attendees at the workshop did not express major concerns.
Ten-year-old Hailey Henderson helps pay for her figure skating lessons through her home décor business, Hailey Brooke Designs, where she stamps personalized books. The business started in August after Henderson discovered her talent for crafting with her grandmother.
OLYMPIC, from page 1A Florida Hospital Center Ice. “I like doing my jumps because you get a certain feeling where like you’re in the air and it just feels so cool,” she said.“I just love it.” Henderson, however, understands figure skating is an expensive sport. So, with some help from her mother, Melissa Nordholm, Henderson upcycles books and gathers other materials for the chic creations. Her items are available on Etsy, an e-commerce website focused on handmade or vintage items and supplies. The business started in August after Henderson discovered her talent for crafting with her grandmother. Nordholm said her daughter does most of the manual labor. “She gets to sit there and stamp them all,” Nordholm explained.“The actual design of the books is pretty much independently her.” The personalized book sets can be customized with family and pet names, as well as favorite quotes and song lyrics. Henderson has also branched out to specific themes, for occasions such as Halloween and Christmas. For example, her “Trick or Treat” handmade set comes wrapped with Halloween-colored raffia and a creepycrawly spider detail. Henderson’s catalog of items includes a wide assortment of handmade sets, including those themed for all branches of military and law enforcement and firefighters. Her “Protect and Serve” handmade set, for instance, comes wrapped with natural jute and adorned with a resin police ornament on top. “It’s just so much fun. It’s like another

Environmentalist scientist David Carr explained proposed guidelines for Pierce Lake during a Sept. 28 presentation at Connerton Elementary School, in Land O’ Lakes.
The scientists also noted that the elevation growth has not been substantial. “It’s not the highest it’s ever been and not the highest it’s ever going to be,” Carr said. The proposed level guidelines for Pierce are not substantially different from the ones adopted in 2008. The recommended high guidance level is 72.7 feet, which is the same as the previously adopted level. The recommended high minimum lake level is 71.9 feet, which is slightly less than the previously adopted level of 72.2 feet. The recommended minimum lake level is 69.8 feet, which is slightly less than the previously adopted level of 70.5 feet. The recommended low guidance level is 68.5 feet, which is slightly less than the previously adopted 68.9 feet. The water management district’s governing board is set to make its ruling in November. A draft report for Pierce Lake’s minimum levels can be found at WaterMatters.org/mflreports. It’s decorated with a pink awareness ribbon and wrapped in pink raffia, with quotes such as ‘Hope, Courage, Strength,’‘Stronger than Cancer’ and ‘I Can and I Will.’ The disease hits close to home to Henderson. Her great-aunt has been battling it for eight years now. “She’s been fighting breast cancer for quite a long time, so it’s pretty meaningful,” Henderson said, also adding “and I like pink, so it goes together.” The Wesley Chapel youth continues brainstorming to come up with other book set ideas for the future. “We’re thinking about doing a Teacher Appreciation one for the teachers and some baking ones, like ‘Bakers Gonna Bake’ or ‘Watch Me Whip,’ because it’s funny,” Henderson said. Nordholm smiles broadly, as she considers the sacrifices her 10-year-old daughter is making to run her own business.“It’s definitely very heartwarming,” she said. Watching her daughter in skates, makes her proud, too. “I love that she’s got that childlike wonder and her dream is to go to the Olympics. I love that she thinks she can achieve it. It definitely makes us feel pretty amazing as parents,” Nordholm said. So far, most of the book set orders have come from Wesley Chapel and Pasco County, but a handful of orders have come in from other states. With each order, Henderson writes every customer a handwritten ‘thank-you’ note. “You are the reasons my dreams are coming true, XOXO Hailey,” each note reads. State champion gymnast has bigger dreams in sight By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

achary Myers’ gymnastics talent became apparent early on. When he was just 3, he was doing flips on the couch and performing perfect cartwheels throughout the family’s Lutz home, his parents said. He’d even tumble around the fields at Oscar Cooler Sports Complex during his Lutz Little League baseball days. “We could see the natural ability in him,” said his father, Andy Myers. “He’s just got freakish ability.” During four years of organized gymnastics, the 10-year-old has racked up his fair share of accolades. He’s captured three state titles and two regional titles as a Level 4, 6 and 7 gymnast, along with winning numerous other local events. His biggest achievement so far came last November. That’s when he made the USA Gymnastics National U10 Development Team, after a 14th place finish at the Future Stars National Championships at the USA Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. (Only the top 16 finishers earned a spot on the development team.) Zachary’s next big event comes Oct. 13, when he’ll compete in the 2018 Region 8 Future Stars and Technical Sequence Evaluation at Evo’s Gymnastics, in Sarasota. Scoring at least a 76 will again get him to the Future Stars National Championships. A trip back to Colorado Springs is well within reach. Zachary recently posted an 82 at the Florida Future Stars Evaluation — the highest mark in the state. He’s shooting for an even higher score at the region qualifier, as he fine-tunes his training at LaFluer’s Gymnastics, in Tampa. Said Zachary:“My goal is to get an 85 at regionals. That is a 9.2 average. My coach also wants me to get that to try to make that my goal.” The young gymnast doesn’t have to look far to see where he gets some of his talent. His mother, Deanna Myers, herself is a former gymnast and a two-time member of the USA Women’s Junior Olympic Team. Forced to retire at 18 due to nagging wrist and ankle injuries, she coached and judged gymnastics throughout nursing school. Deanna, however, was always hesitant about putting Zachary into gymnastics, un-

derstanding the commitment and dedication required for success. She finally agreed after Zachary’s relentless pleading to get lessons. Deanna explained:“I didn’t want Zachary missing out on things. When he first said he wanted to do gymnastics, I just kind of brushed it off. But, he consistently asked me for six months straight and then I was like, ‘OK, maybe I need to go ahead and take him.’”
ZACHARY’S PASSION FOR GYMNASTICS REMAINS STRONG Though he sometimes misses playing baseball and time for other activities, he
wouldn’t trade gymnastics for anything. “I mean, I really like doing it. It’s just really fun once you get like really good at it,” Zachary said, noting he gets a lot of support from his fellow teammates at LaFleur’s. His favorite event is the pommel horse, an apparatus fitted with a pair of curved handgrips, used for a gymnastic exercise consisting of swings of the legs and body. “I like the agility if it. I get to move around and use my arms,” he said.“I used to play baseball and I used to have a lot of arm strength, and I like pommels because I can use my arms.” That strength — combined with his

PASCO SCHOOLS ENHANCE SPORTING EVENT SECURITY PROCEDURES Pasco County Schools has installed new safety procedures for all sporting events. From now on, only clear plastic, clear vinyl and clear Ziploc bags will be permitted. No other bags of any kind will be permitted, including backpacks, fanny packs, purses and duffle bags. Some exceptions will be made for diaper bags, medically-necessary bags, and school/professional photographers’ camera bags. Meanwhile, no re-entry will be allowed into games if a patron leaves, and no tickets will be sold after the beginning of the fourth quarter for football and basketball. Parking lots will be cleared immediately after games, and no loitering or after-parties will be allowed. The rules were developed in conjunction with the Pasco Sheriff’s Office after violence occurred at two Florida high school football games this season, and after surveying other school districts that are implementing similar procedures. For more information, visit Pasco.k12.fl.us/comm/new_event_security_procedures.

mental focus and flexibility— has molded him into an elite gymnast for his age group. LaFleur’s Gymnastics instructor Steven Schmerber said Zachary’s success is a “combination of a lot of things. “He just kind of has this natural ability,” said Schmerber.“Even though all our other kids (at LaFluer’s) are still doing really well, he kind of has that little extra ‘oomph’ that just kind of pushes him a little bit. “He’s a tiny dude—very flexible, very strong— so his strength to weight ratio is very big,” the coach added. Hard work is also part of the equation. Zachary practices six days a week, for more than 20 hours per week. During the summer, he’ll practice as much as five hours per day. When Zachary’s not perfecting his gymnastics routine, he’s buried in his studies. As a fifth-grader at McKitrick Elementary School in Lutz, Zachary is a member of the National Elementary Honor Society. He has made the principal’s honor roll multiple times and he serves on the school’s safety patrol. “He doesn’t need any push,” Deanna said.“He does everything without us asking him, so he’s self-motivated on his own. We don’t have to give him any pep talk. We don’t have to remind him to do anything. We don’t have to be concerned or ask him, ‘Hey, did you do your homework?’ because we already knows it’s been done.” Deanna, meanwhile, is happy to see her son flourish in the sport she also loves. She’s his biggest fan and cheerleader. “It’s exciting,” she said,“but I have to say, I’m more nervous watching him than when I ever was when I competed. My nerves are more watching him because I have no control, and I can’t go out on the floor.” While many boys his age are wrapped up in video games and other toys, Zachary is mapping out his gymnastics future. He’s shooting for a scholarship at Stanford, Michigan or Oklahoma universities. He dreams of qualifying for the 2028 Summer Olympics and following in the footsteps of his idol, Sam Mikulak, a fivetime U.S. national all-around champion and two-time Olympian. His plan to achieve those lofty goals? “Try my hardest,” he said,“and don’t give up.” For more information on Zachary’s fundraising efforts to nationals, visit tinyurl.com/ydhwpoxc.

His masterpiece home, Fallingwater, 70 miles east of Pittsburgh, his circular Guggenheim Museum in Manhattan, his desert gem Taliesin West, outside of Phoenix, and his charming prairie homes in the Chicago suburb Oak Park, are all far from Florida. But, the most concentrated number of Wright-designed buildings in the world are on the Florida Southern College campus in Lakeland. And, they are open to the public. Wright designed and oversaw the construction of 12 buildings between 1938 and 1958 on the campus he called “Child of the Sun.’’ All on the west side of campus, near Lake Hollingsworth, the buildings include a library with a circular reading room, and two chapels, side by side and both featuring concrete walls with colorful glass inserts that Wright said reminded him of Florida flowers and butterflies. Red, green, blue and yellow - the inserts sparkle like sea glass in the Florida sunshine. One of Wright’s trademarks was to always incorporate buildings in their natural settings and to use local materials when he could. He did this in Lakeland, where he nestled buildings into natural berms and along slopes, then included whole walls of glass windows that open onto nature. He liked mimicking nature, too.The concrete columns on esplanades, or covered walkways, that connect many of his campus buildings are shaped like orange trees - and are spaced 18 feet apart, the same distance that orange trees are spaced in nearby groves, says Carol Hall, who leads tours of Wright’s buildings. At the Sharp Family Tourism and Education Center, visitors can go into a Usonian House, designed by Wright, that was built in 2013. Wright created the blueprints for it in 1939 and envisioned professors living in his Usonian homes in neighborhoods across from campus. He figured the 1,300-squarefoot homes would cost $20,000 each, which he thought was affordable - in 1939. That never happened. His plans were resurrected for this one, and construction - because of the craftsmanship and materials - cost $1.3 million. Like many Wright homes, it features low ceilings in the entranceway, then soaring ceilings in a large gathering place, with a fireplace, built-in dining table and couch, other Wright hallmarks. The house also features his signature Cherokee red poured concrete floor, floorto-ceiling windows looking out toward the yard and built-in bookcases. And, like in many of his campus buildings, colorful cast glass sparkles from tiny indentations in concrete walls. Across the street, on campus, visitors can see his other creations, starting with his Water Dome, a 160-foot-diameter fountain that was renovated in 2007 and sprays water 45 feet in the air at full blast. Wright called it “the fountain of knowledge.” Then, there’s “Mister Wright’s Library,” as Hall calls it, built from 1942-1945 to house books and a circular reading room, but now used for meetings and lectures. It still has Wright’s beautiful wood desks, examples of his chairs and another looming fireplace. Nearby, a newer library, designed by one of Wright’s students, blends with Wright’s creations. Two of his most picturesque buildings are chapels - the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel and the William H. Danforth Chapel, both still used for services, weddings and other special events. Both have low-slung entranceways that make you feel as if you have to bow to enter, roofs soaring skyward and lots of glass windows. The Annie Pfeiffer Chapel has a wall of

Tips for the trip
Colorful cast glass inserts in the concrete block walls of the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel shine in the sunlight. Frank Lloyd Wright, who designed the chapel, said they reflected Florida’s flowers and butterflies.

windows similar to those in Fallingwater, a home Wright designed over a waterfall in 1939 that’s now opened to the public as a museum. It also has soaring concrete designs in the shape of thunderbirds and a door at each of the chapel’s four corners instead of a central front door, which makes it challenging for brides to make a grand entrance, Hall quips. The Danforth Chapel is smaller and features a wall of red, yellow and clear glass behind the lectern. Like in the larger chapel, Cherokee red cushions pad wooden benches. The Polk County Science Building has other Wright touches: the columns on the

organic sciences side of the building are concrete shaped like orange trees, like those on the covered walkways. Those on the industrial sciences side are all straight lines made of aluminum. Hall said Wright tested them in his shower to be sure they’d withstand rain and heat. A theater in the round in Wright’s Ordway Arts Building has such excellent acoustics that an actor standing in the center of the circular space can say lines in a normal voice and they’ll be heard by everyone in the room. Whispers from the entrance of the theater distinctly carry all along the circular wall to someone standing halfway around the circle. This is the only theater in the round Wright designed. Surrounding the Ordway Arts Building
and other Wright buildings are ponds, orange trees, flowering bushes, a rose garden, smaller fountains, hedges and lawns, typical of Wright’s “harmonious union of art and nature.” “We have lots of gardens and lots of green space, and that’s all Wright’s influence,” Hall says. And, thanks to Wright, The Princeton Review named the 3,000-student Florida Southern College campus the most beautiful in America, she says. Wright himself wasn’t shy about bragging about his creations. When the then-college president refused to tear down the perfectly attractive red brick buildings that pre-dated Wright’s, the architect told him that was fine, that they’d just be “ugly bridesmaids to my beautiful brides.”

Caleb is outgoing Caleb is a handsome 6-year-old tabby that arrived at the shelter after his owner passed away. He currently enjoys being one of several residents in the Feline Freedom room. Caleb is always ready to greet you and usually the first one in the room to do so.
Lottie is a social butterfly Lottie is an 8-year-old Labrador Retriever. She is an ‘ambassador of goodwill’ in her neighborhood, as she always greets passersby with a wagging tail and a roll over onto her back to elicit a good belly rub! Lottie likes other dogs, but prefers people company. A little bit sneaky, she enjoys slinking onto her owners’ bed after they have fallen asleep for the night. Lottie owns Gary and Barb Clark, of Land O’ Lakes.

PET PAWS DOG SWAP
A new partnership has formed between Hillsborough County and Hernando County public pet shelters. The Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center and Hernando County Animal Service agreed to each “swap three dogs from their shelter populations. All of the dogs had been in their respective shelters for weeks, with no immediate prospects for adoption. Moving the dogs to a new location would expose them to a new audience and, hopefully, lead to successful adoptions. If the dogs still aren’t able to find a home, they will be returned to their original shelters. The agreement prohibits either of the shelters from euthanizing a dog sent over from the other county. To view adoptable pets, visit HCFLGov.net/pets, or visit the Pet Resource Center at 440 N. Falkenburg Road in Tampa.
PARADE & BLESSING OF PETS
Congregation Kol Ami, 3919 Moran Road in Tampa, will host its 10th annual Parade of Pets and “Birkat Behemot (Blessing of the Beasts) on Oct. 14 at noon, in the North ‘Barking’ Lot. For information, call (813) 962-6338.
HORSE OWNER’S WORKSHOP
The UF/IFAS Pasco County Cooperative Extension Service will host a Central Florida Horse Owner’s Educational Workshop on Oct. 16 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Pasco County Extension office in Clayton Hall, 36702 State Road 52 in Dade City. For more information, visit bit.ly/horseownerspasco, or call (352) 518-0156.
BEAR ACTIVITY INCREASES
During fall, in Florida, black bear activity increases as bears being the natural process of putting on fat for the winter. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reminds people to be bear-wise to help prevent conflicts with the state’s largest land mammal. Bears require about 20,000 calories a day and will eat anything that’s convenient. To keep bears wild and away from your home, try to follow these simple tips: • Secure household garbage in a sturdy shed, garage or wildlife-resistant container. • Put household garbage out on the morning of pickup rather than the night before. • Secure commercial garbage in bear-resistant dumpsters. • Protect gardens, bee yards, compost and livestock with electric fencing. • Encourage your homeowner’s association or local government to institute ordinances to require trash to be secured from bears. • Feed pets indoors or bring in dishes after feeding.
• Clean grills and store them in a secure place. • Remove wildlife feeders or make them bear-resistant. • Pick ripe fruit from trees and remove fallen fruit from the ground. It is illegal in Florida to intentionally feed bears or leave out food or garbage that will attract bears and cause human-bear conflicts. If you see or suspect someone is feeding or attracting bears, call the FWC Wildlife Alert Hotline at (888) 404-3922.
