Economic summit puts focus on education
By Kevin Weiss

Fostering educational opportunities in Pasco County was the primary focus of the second annual Zephyrhills Economic Summit. Doing that begins with beefing up the Pasco County school district’s career and technical education programs, said Kurt Browning, superintendent of Pasco County Schools.

“We need to put our career academies on steroids,” said Browning, one of several guest speakers at the Oct. 24 summit, at the new Zephyrhills City Hall, that brought together local education, business and government stakeholders. Based on the region’s business profile, Browning said there needs to be greater emphasis on teaching trade skills — such as roofing and carpentry, plumbing, HVAC technicians, electricians and more. “One of the things that we keep hearing
a lot about is the trades. I’m continually amazed of the number of people that stop us and say,‘I just need young men that can get up there and lay roof,’” Browning said. To meet those demands, he called for increased state funding and greater collaboration with the Florida Department of Education to create industrial certifications for those fields. The district also needs to ensure opportunities for students, not See SUMMIT, page 13A

Those attending the events were encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the live entertainment in comfort. They also were asked to donate nonperishable food items or cash to help support Feeding Tampa Bay, the area’s largest food bank. Besides the live entertainment, a fall festival featured a pumpkin patch and decorating station, and food trucks for those wanting to get a bite to eat. Construction begins to link recreational trails Sharing joy through Operation Christmas Child By B.C. Manion

Jennifer Hernandez is in the business of spreading love – not just locally, but globally. For the past two years, she and Bridgeway Church, where she attends in Wesley Chapel, have been coordinating their efforts to help kids worldwide in what is known as “Operation Christmas Child.” The nondenominational Christian project was first established in 1993 and is based in North Carolina under the Samaritan’s Purse organization. Samaritan’s Purse is headed by evangelist Franklin Graham who had a vision to help underprivileged youth gain something beneficial from the holidays. Thus was the beginning of Operation Christmas Child. Since its inception 25 years ago, more than 157 million children across 160 countries have received shoeboxes with school supplies, personal hygiene items and toys. This year, thousands of other volunteers nationwide are trying to reach 11 million children in need. From Nov. 12 to Nov. 19, a National See CHRISTMAS, page 13A
Pasco County’s engineering services had an event on Oct. 30 to celebrate the construction of the new Starkey Gap Bicycle and Pedestrian Trail that will link the Starkey and Suncoast Trails in Pasco County to the Pinellas Trail. Construction of the new multi-use 2.4 mile-trail is expected to be completed in the summer of 2019. Once the segment is finished, it will provide connectivity to a trail that’s now more than 100 miles and continues to grow. Construction of the Starkey Gap Trail is being funded and managed by the Florida Department of Transportation. After the trail is built, Pasco County will assume management of the trail. This section of the trail is the last link of the Coast to Coast Connector Trail to be built in Pasco County. Once the Coast to Coast Connector Trail is completed, the network will stretch approximately 250 miles — from St. Petersburg to Titusville. Pasco County Commissioner Kathryn Starkey, who has played an instrumental role in addressing the need for recreational trails in Pasco, and across Florida, commented on the importance of this and other trail projects during an interview with The Laker/Lutz News. “Before there ever was a Coast-to-Coast, we had this wonderful trail through Starkey

It’s world famous. “And, it just made so much sense to connect the two,” Starkey said. Artistic couple opens home gallery in Wesley Chapel By Brian Fernandes
bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com
Upon entering the front door, various colors seem to emanate from all directions. The living room and dining room walls are covered with diverse paintings. The tables are decked with sculptures of different shapes and proportions. More artworks can be found in the bedrooms, too. This is the Wesley Chapel home of Bernard and Gwendolyn Brooks, who moved to the area a year ago from Washington D.C., to live closer to their family. Their residence doubles as their art gallery. The artists have dedicated their lives to teaching and exposing the world to their craft. Each grew up around art. Gwendolyn’s father, a painter, was a curator at Howard University for 33 years before retiring. She grew up painting and also developed a love for music through the piano. Although a passionate artist and musician, she felt a stronger calling to creating art. “I realized that art as well as music are disciplines that require a lot of time and energy,” she said, reflecting on the competing desires.“I couldn’t do both, so I chose art.” She pursued her education, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Education from Howard University and a Master of Arts in Education/Counseling from Trinity College. She spent her career as an art teacher in Washington D.C., and in Gambia,Africa. Bernard recalled that his uncle was an artist who was quite “comfortable” in his line of work. His uncle was an art instructor and helped establish the art department at Carver Vocational High School in Baltimore, Maryland. Bernard noticed and admired his uncle’s contentment, which, in turn, influenced Bernard to pursue a life in the arts. Bernard received a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Howard University, where he remained as the chief medical illustrator for more than 26 years. It was during this time that he would de-

His artwork — known for its cotton fabric, metallic mediums and watercolors — began to gain notoriety. “I was attracting people early on that had influence,” Bernard said, of his art’s growing popularity.“I always had a captive audience.” His pieces would go on to be featured on national television shows, including “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” and “The Parkers.” After becoming established, Bernard continued to be an advocate for up-and-coming young artists in the nation’s capital. He often opened his home, giving many a place to stay and hiring some, as interns. The couple said their art has been inspired by international influences, noting they’ve lived in the Caribbean islands and visited numerous countries. Recently, a trip to Cuba inspired each of them to create pieces reflecting life on the island.
get a message. Gwendolyn, on the other hand, avoids controversial issues — focusing instead on positive aspects of humanity. “I like to brighten the person’s life – take them away from what’s happening in the world,” Gwendolyn said. In addition to painting, she enjoys creating dolls and handmade quilts. Stitching quilts by hand can be a tedious process, but it makes her work feel more personal, she said. The couple has had art shows around the world, and they continue to do so. In some cases, their works go on display even when they can’t be present. At home, they have two separate rooms they use as galleries for their respective works. In addition to creating art, they also appreciate work created by other artists. Hugh Embry Branch Library now open again on Mondays By Brian Fernandes bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com
A ribbon-cutting was held at Hugh Embry Branch Library on Oct. 29 to celebrate the fact that, once again, the library is open on Mondays. The facility, at 14215 Fourth St., is one of four libraries across Pasco County where Monday hours have been restored. The others are the Hudson Branch Library in Hudson, the Regency Park Branch in New Port Richey and the Land O’ Lakes Branch in Land O’ Lakes. Pasco County Commissioners voted in 2010 to reduce library operating hours because of plummeting revenues during the Recession. Gradually, it has been adding hours back to libraries. Pasco County Commissioner Ron Oakley, who represents District 1, did the honors of cutting the ribbon during the festivities at the Hugh Embry Branch. He also shared his thoughts about the vital role that libraries play in community life. “You see not only older people in there, but young people and families – that’s very important to me,” Oakley said. Many people need the services the library offers, said Angelo Liranzo, the Hugh Embry

Branch manager. People visit the library to check out books, but they also come to work on school assignments, conduct research for job searches, or join in the library’s recreational programs. With the restoration of funding, the Hugh Embry Branch is now open on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The additional hours allow increased ac-
cess to the amenities that the library provides. For instance, patrons can use a program called Freegal — implemented this year — to stream and download music legally onto their personal devices. Films and e-books also can be conveniently transferred to laptops, tablets and smartphones with software like Kanopy and Hoopla.
There are also launchpad tablets that kids can use to play games, which help teach subjects, such as math and science. “One of the great things about libraries is that we try to find ways to make learning seem like fun,” Liranzo said. After Oakley concluded his remarks, those attending the celebration were able to enjoy refreshments and live music.

What’s Cookin’ Looking for piecrust perfection? Check this out By Betsy Crisp
Special to The Laker/Lutz News
Maybe you are one of those who struggled making the perfect, flaky piecrust that your mother or grandmother did. I know I worked like crazy to perfect that skill, but when they came out with the prepared and refrigerated type – I was hooked! Maybe you just don’t like the typical type of crust that is used in most pies? Well, here’s something you might want to try. You can call it impossible or just sheer magic. But, the fact is, these recipes simply form the crust while the pie is baking. To me, this might more aptly be described as a cross somewhere between a cobbler and a pie. For the result isn’t really a crust, and the it’s not really crustless.

Another plus? There are recipes for both sweet and savory concoctions. There are recipes for pumpkin, apple, custard, and coconut pies, as well as those for main dishes such as quiche, cheeseburger or taco pies. I am not exactly sure where this idea originated. I have seen an old Mennonite cookbook from my Iowa grandmother’s collection that featured similar recipes. However, I’m also aware that some time back in the 1970s, a major food company began marketing a baking mix that you could keep on the shelf and draw from as needed for various recipes. Their test kitchens got busy and developed many recipes, and even printed several on the back of the box to entice consumers into using more of this versatile mixture. Betsy Crisp is a Professor Emeritus, UF/IFAS Extension – Family & Consumer Sciences.
Homemade Baking Mix (If you don’t have that prepared/packaged baking mix on hand, you can try this substiture) Ingredients: 1 cup of flour 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder 3/4 teaspoon sugar (optional) ½ teaspoon salt 1 Tablespoon oil (or melted butter/margarine/shortening) BETSY CRISP
Instructions: Combine all ingredients except fat in a large bowl (or pulse in a food processor) and mix. Add fat and continue process (or use a pastry cutter) until mixture resembles coarse meal (crumbly/size of peas). Note: Try not to make up more than you can use in one day. Once the oil is added, it does not store well due to food safety concerns.
Magic Coconut Custard Pie Ingredients: ¾ cup granulated sugar ¼ cup butter (or margarine), softened 4 large eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ½ cup all-purpose flour 2 cups milk 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut Whipped topping (optional) 2 Tablespoons toasted coconut* for garnish (optional) Instructions: Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray a 9-inch pie pan with cooking spray. Cream butter and sugar with a mixer (or 30seconds in a blender). Add eggs, one at a time. Add flour and milk alternately, and mix until all ingredients are just blended. Stir in coconut.
Don’t be surprised when the pie seems to shrink after chilling.
Pour into prepared pie pan (on top of a baking sheet – just in case it spills). Bake for 50-60 minutes until slightly browned on top and knife inserted in center comes out clean. It will rise up some, be light and fluffy, but still giggle. Remove from the oven. Let cool 15 minutes to 20 minutes before placing in refrigerator to chill at least 4 hours, or overnight is even better. Don’t be surprised when it starts to fall/shrink down a little. Serve with whipped topping and toasted coconut as garnish (optional) Variations: 1) Increase vanilla to 1 ½ teaspoon to 2 teaspoons; 2) add ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg and/or sprinkle on top; 3) add 1 Tablespoon lemon juice, which equals approximately the juice from ½ a lemon. Makes 1 pie, which has 6 servings to 8 servings. Note: *To make toasted coconut: Make a thin layer of coconut on a flat baking sheet. Bake at 350°F. for 4-5 minutes. Be sure to stir with a spatula after the first 2-3 minutes to help brown evenly and not scorch. This can also be done on top of the stove in a fry pan on medium low-medium heat – stirring constantly. You can store in an air-tight container for up to two weeks.

Local author hopes his story will help inspire others By Kevin Weiss

Remington Walls hasn’t let his disease define him — and he wants the same for those dealing with similar circumstances. The 18-year-old Land O’ Lakes native has lived a life without regular food or drink since he was diagnosed at 4 years old with Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE), a rare, incurable disease where all food deteriorates his esophagus. His only source of nutrition has come via a hypoallergenic amino acid-based liquid formula, called Neocate EO28 Splash. The abnormal disorder has not stopped him from living a normal life, however. Remington overcame the hardship to Remington Walls become a standout varsity baseball player at Land O’ Lakes High School — and good enough to be selected to play in the Pasco County Senior All-Star Baseball game last year. He was also a solid student, earning multiple college scholarships. Remington is now a freshman a Valdosta State University (Valdosta, Georgia) where he’s studying to become an athletic trainer. He is also a volunteer assistant with the Valdosta State baseball team. Published author can also be added to Remington’s list of accomplishments. His autobiography, “Homeplate: A True Story of Resilience,” delves into his foodless life, with the hope of inspiring others. The 118-page book is co-authored by his mother, Stephanie Walls, who shares her memories and insights on coping with the disease from a parent’s point-of-view. The book will be released on Nov. 25. “Remington wanted just to kind of motivate people and encourage people that regardless of your situation, find a way to overcome and persevere. There’s some pretty powerful things he has to say in his book,” Stephanie Walls said during a recent interview with The Laker/Lutz News. The book, which was written this past summer, is particularly geared toward anybody dealing with a life-altering disease, said Stephanie, an eighth-grade language arts teacher at Cypress Creek Middle High School in Wesley Chapel. “The book is really more of an inspira-

Since then, Remington and Stephanie have both advocated for state and federal legislation for formula coverage for medical nutrition. They also continue to work closely with the American Partnership for Eosinophilic Disorders (APFED), a nonprofit advocacy organization for those living with eosinophilic related disorders. Guaranteed fixed rate with new money deposits of at least $25,000 for an 11-month term.
Both accounts are FDIC-insured up to the maximum allowable limit. Platinum Savings offer available in CT, FL and NY. Fixed Rate CD offer available in CT, FL, NY and WA. Portfolio by Wells Fargo® customers are eligible to receive an additional interest rate bonus on these accounts.3
1. To qualify for this offer, you must have a new or existing Platinum Savings account and enroll the account in this offer between 10/15/2018 and 11/16/2018. This offer is subject to change at any time, without notice. This offer is available only to Platinum Savings customers in the following states: CT, FL and NY. In order to earn the Special Interest Rate of 1.69% (Special Rate), you must deposit $25,000 in new money (from sources outside of Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., or its affiliates) to the enrolled savings account and maintain a minimum daily account balance of $25,000 throughout the term of this offer. The corresponding Annual Percentage Yield (APY) for this offer is 1.70%. The Special Rate will be applied to the enrolled savings account for a period of 12 months, starting on the date the account is enrolled in the offer. However, for any day during that 12-month period that the daily account balance is less than the $25,000 minimum, the Special Rate will not apply and the interest rate will revert to the standard interest rate applicable to your Platinum Savings account. As of 09/18/2018, the standard interest rate and APY for a Platinum Savings account in CT, FL and NY with an account balance of $0.01 to $99,999.99 is 0.03% (0.03% APY) and with an account balance of $100,000 and above is 0.05% (0.05% APY). Each tier shown reflects the current minimum daily collected balance required to obtain the applicable APY. Interest is compounded daily and paid monthly. The amount of interest earned is based on the daily collected balances in the account. Upon the expiration of the 12-month promotional period, standard interest rates apply. Minimum to open a Platinum Savings account is $25. A monthly service fee of $12 applies in any month the account falls below a $3,500 minimum daily balance. Fees may reduce earnings. Interest rates are variable and subject to change without notice. Wells Fargo may limit the amount you deposit to a Platinum Savings account to an aggregate of $1 million. Offer not available to Private Banking, Business Banking, Wholesale or Wealth customers. 2. Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is effective for accounts opened between 10/15/2018 to 11/16/2018. The 11-month New Dollar CD special requires a minimum of $25,000 brought to Wells Fargo from sources outside of Wells Fargo Bank N.A., or its affiliates to earn the advertised APY. Public Funds and Wholesale accounts are not eligible for this offer. APY assumes interest remains on deposit until maturity. Interest is compounded daily. Payment of interest on CDs is based on term: For terms less than 12 months (365 days), interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or at maturity (the end of the term). For terms of 12 months or more, interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. A fee for early withdrawal will be imposed and could reduce earnings on this account. Special Rates are applicable to the initial term of the CD only. At maturity, the special rate CD will automatically renew for a term of 6 months, at the interest rate and APY in effect for CDs on renewal date not subject to a Special Rate, unless the Bank has notified you otherwise. If you wish to take advantage of another consumer deposit offer requiring a minimum new money deposit, you will be required to do so with another new money deposit as stated in the offer requirements and qualifications. 3. The Portfolio by Wells Fargo program has a $30 monthly service fee, which can be avoided when you have one of the following qualifying balances: $25,000 or more in qualifying linked bank deposit accounts (checking, savings, CDs, FDIC-insured IRAs) or $50,000 or more in any combination of qualifying linked banking, brokerage (available through Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC) and credit balances (including 10% of mortgage balances, certain mortgages not eligible). CA ALL (352) 315-0333 Trusts Are Not Exclusively For The Wealthy Attorney Andrew Curtis, Esq.
Despite popular belief, wealthy people aren’t thhe only folks who may need revocable living trusts. Attorney Andrew Curtis, whose practice concenntrates in the areas of trusts, estates and elder law, is very familiar with this common misconception. “It’s a false notion,” Curtis said. “For example,, I recently had a fellow visit my offffice whose mother had just diedd. All his mother owned was a $100,000 condo, and her will read, ‘I leave my condo to my child.’ “Although this seemed clear and simple, the chhild had to go through probate before he could sell the condo, and that leegal fee was $2,500. A revocable living trust may have avoided this.” There are many additional reasons why a revoccable living trust may be advisable for a person of modest means. Curtis outlines some of these below. 1. A trust might also allow you to “rule from m the grave” After you pass on, your assets may be distributted according to specifications made while you were still alive. Thhis prevents potentially undesirable scenarios — such as your children leaving their inheritance to people you never liked, such as theeir spouse. If you leave your assets to your kids in a lifetime trust, thhey may each use the money for normal living, but upon their deaths, the remaining assets will pass to your grandchildren or to their survivinng sibling(s) — and
not to their spouses. Further, after you are dead, the trust may protect against your spouse leaving the money to a new spouse, significant other or to an unscrupulous caregiver. 2. Tr Trusts may be extremely useful in second marriage situations If you simply leave your assets to your new spouse, he/she is free to leave them to his/her children, not yours, once you pass away. This scenario may be avoidable with a trust, and your assets can ultimately pass to your kids. 3. Tr Trusts may be used to manage assets inherited by children who aren’t good with money For example, you may provide that the child will only get the income from his/her inheritance or in monthly installments. 4. Tr Trusts may also protect your children’s inheritance, if they go bankrupt, divorce orr face a lawsuit 5. Further, if you have a handicapped child, a “supplemental needs trust” may be utilized to prevent loss of his or her government benefits. Learn how Curtis can help you set up a Revocable Living Tr Trust at a free seminar on November 16th at the We Wesley Chapel Hampton Inn & Suites at 11:00am and 2:00pm. Seating is limited, so be sure to call (352) 315-0333 today to reserve your seat. The cost of a revocable living trust is $399 for a single person and $499 for a married couple (plus incidental costs.)

ESSAY WINNERS
Among a record of 103 entrants in Pasco County Clerk & Comptroller Paula O’ Neil’s fifth annual Constitution Essay Contest, Carly Carly Bowling Bowling, a fifthgrader at Woodland Elementary School, came out on top with her deep research, a keen grasp of history and the intent of the Constitution, as well as clear writing skills. SUMMIT, from page 1A destined for college, to have a chance to learn trade skills that can translate to highwage job right out of high school. Browning put it this way:“What we need to do is have training programs that meet the needs of all of our students, so if you’re going to be a plumber, you be the best plumber you can be.” Browning also said the school district needs more input from local business leaders on the types of labor needed for the present and future. “We need to do a better job of communicating, and we need to create a better relationship with our chambers, because the chambers are the ones that are really connecting, letting businesses know what we do and creating dialogues to help build that need,” the superintendent said.
PREPARING TOMORROW’S WORKFORCE
COURTESY OF PASCO SCHOOLS
Pasco County School’s Career and Technical Education programs were discussed extensively at the second annual Zephyrhills Economic Summit.
Browning was upbeat about some of the career and technical academies the district presently offers. He pointed to Zephyrhills High’s aviation academy and Wesley Chapel High’s automotive technology academy, along with academies at other schools ranging from health and finance, to cybersecurity and culinary arts. “I think we’re on the right path,” Browning said.“We’re working tirelessly trying to make sure our programs are relevant to meet the employment needs of our employers in Pasco County. We’re not perfect, and we’re not where we need to be. We’re still trying to figure out how to address the trades issue.” Browning also mentioned the district is designing a technical high school in east Pasco that would likely open by 2022. The district’s only two technical offerings — Marchman Technical College and Wendell Krinn Technical High School (which replaced Ridgewood High this school year) — are located in New Port Richey. Plans call for the new school to be built on a 125-acre, district-owned tract of land along Fairview Heights and Handcart Road in the Dade City area. It will help relieve overcrowding at Pasco, Zephyrhills, Wesley Chapel and Wiregrass Ranch high schools, Browning said. “It’s going to be uniquely situated in the right place, right spot, offering technical career education students are clamoring for,” he said. The technical school is also something the manufacturing industry is pushing for, according to Tom Mudano,AmSkills executive director, another guest speaker at the summit. Mudano said a tech school based in east Pasco could help lure more manufacturing business to the region, to follow in the footsteps of companies such as Mettler Toledo and TouchPoint Medical, which he said have already brought a combined 700 jobs to the county. “We truly believe that we need a facility on this side of Pasco County,” Mudano said. “If you’re looking at bringing jobs here, having a workforce is important.” Mudano pointed out Tampa Bay has the most number of manufacturers in the state. And, he said that many of those companies have expressed a great need for additional skilled and semi-skilled workers. “A lot of people don’t even realize that
there’s a lot of (manufacturing) opportunities out there,” he said. Mudano also assured that those types of trade jobs aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. He cited information from the National Association of Manufacturers that projects there will be about 3.4 million jobs over the next 10 years, yet only 1.1 million of them will get filled. The summit also featured a lengthy presentation from state Sen. Tom Lee, a Republican from Thonotosassa. Much of his talk centered on the state’s education system and the strides made during the last several years. He pointed to the advent of charter schools and various opportunity scholarship programs as key reasons for boosting the state’s public education system on the whole. “Everybody is more on their game today than they were 20 years ago. We have a rising graduation rate, better testing scores,” said Lee, who represents parts of Hillsborough, Pasco, and Polk counties in District 20. He added:“We have created some competition for the public education system, and the public education system has responded well.” Meanwhile, Lee suggested that going forward, the state legislature should “back off some of the micromanagement” of county school districts. He said school boards should instead have more control over district budgets and educational programs to “best meet the needs of the individual student populations of the schools.” Lee also advocated for creating “fair competition” and “leveling the playing field” between public schools and alternative charter schools. One way to do that, he said, includes loosening up some of strict building requirements of new public schools, called State Requirements for Educational Facilities (SREF), that cost school districts exponentially more than their charter school counterparts. He asked: “Why is it costing public education system 20 percent more to build a public school than it is a charter school?” Other speakers at the summit included Dr. Keiva Wiley, Pasco County Schools director of Career and Technical Education;Angie Stone, Zephyrhills High School principal; Dr. Stanley Giannet, of Pasco-Hernando State College; Pasco County Commissioner Ron Oakley; Maria Reza, Career Source Pasco/Hernando business services consultant; Seta Ruiz, Florida Hospital Zephyrhills director of clinical services; and, Dr. Randy Stovall, Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce president. The Zephyrhills Economic Development Coalition presented the summit, in partnership with the City of Zephyrhills and The Greater Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce.

Children within Fiji are elated as they receive special Christmas gifts from their friends in the U.S.
CHRISTMAS, from page 1A Collection Week will take place throughout the U.S., where donations can be handed in at various drop-off locations. Hernandez, a drop-off team leader, recalled her reaction when a fellow church member initiated the idea to the congregation:“It looked like a worthwhile cause.” Now in its third year, Bridgeway Church has collected more than 2,000 shoeboxes and hopes this holiday season will not be short of a success. Bridgeway is one of seven drop-off locations for shoeboxes in Pasco County. “The entire reason is to demonstrate God’s love through this tangible gift,” explained Dana Williams, assistant manager of media relations for Samaritan’s Purse.“This is an open door to share with a child that they’re loved and not forgotten.” The manpower of Samaritan’s Purse is spread wide, as they train “local ministry partners” in other countries on how to receive the gifts and distribute them. They will typically set up outreach events in a town’s church, school or community center and get the word out to parents that there’s a special surprise waiting for their children there. Oftentimes, foreign pastors who know their communities well are granted the task of handing out shoeboxes to the children whom they know are in great need. While adults can set up the shoeboxes themselves, youth are strongly encouraged to be involved, to help them learn how privileged they are here in the United States, Hernandez said.
TRAIL, from page 1A While serving on that council during Bush’s administration, she said she learned about trails all over the state, and it just made sense to link those trails. She was involved in linking the Starkey Trail to the Suncoast Trail, which provided a 100-mile trail, she said. After that, she got started on working on the Starkey Gap link. Prep football regular season recap By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com
W
ith the 2018 prep football regular season coming to a close — and playoffs set to begin — here’s a look at some of the storylines and highlights from schools in The Laker/Lutz News coverage area:
ZEPHYRHILLS NOTCHES PERFECT CAMPAIGN The 2018 campaign will be one to remember for the Zephyrhills Bulldogs. They finished 10-0 and captured their second straight Class 5A, District 8 title — becoming the only public school in Pasco County to finish the regular season undefeated, and, marking the first time the program has had a perfect regular season since 1995. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs closed the year with a 49-0 shutout of the Pasco Pirates — the largest margin of victory in the longstanding 9-Mile War rivalry game that dates back to 1941. Of course, the Bulldogs recent success is no fluke. The program has posted eight straight winning seasons and five playoff appearances under its last two coaches, Nick Carroll and Reggie Roberts. Carroll is now 28-5 through his first three seasons as head coach. That includes 19 straight regular season wins dating back to last season. Now Zephyrhills hopes for a deeper run in the playoffs than last season, when they lost an emotional 52-49 home contest to Green Cove Springs Clay in the Class 5A regional semifinals. They host Crystal River (8-2) on Friday in the Class 5A regional quarterfinals.
GAITHER FINISHES STRONG TO REACH PLAYOFFS Heading into the final week of the regular season, the Gaither Cowboys were on the outside looking in to the Class 7A playoffs. But, a remarkable 21-20 win over Tampa Bay Tech in the regular season finale — as part of a three-game winning streak — propelled them to a No. 6 seed in the Class 7A, Region 2 bracket. The win gives Gaither (7-3) some momentum in notching its second straight playoff berth, something the Cowboys will need this Friday against Plant (9-1) — a team they haven’t beaten in 10 contests, including a 44-34 loss back on Sept. 21. But, don’t totally discount the Cowboys, who feature a balanced offensive attack and a dangerous pass rush to hang with many teams.

Zephyrhills High finished the regular season with an undefeated 10-0 mark.
LAND O’ LAKES THRIVES UNDER NEW HEAD COACH While the Land O’ Lakes Gators narrowly missed the playoffs, it was undoubtedly a successful season for first-year head coach Chad Walker. The Gators (7-3) notched its first winning season since 2013. And, they finally upended crosstown rival Sunlake in the annual Butter Bowl game — winning for the first time in the series since 2009. The big question is whether Land O’ Lakes can maintain the newfound success after losing a large senior class that includes a bevy of contributors on offense and defense.Working in the team’s favor, however, is the expected return of junior quarterback Ethan Forrester, who posted a 51.6 completion percentage for 1,252 passing yards and 12 touchdowns (three interceptions).
LOCAL PRIVATE SCHOOLS ARE PLAYOFF-BOUND It’s been a solid year for private schools in The Laker/Lutz News coverage area, as Carrollwood Day School, Zephyrhills Christian, and Academy at the Lakes (eightman) each qualified for the playoffs. Carrollwood Day (5-5) and Zephyrhills Christian (7-3) locked up No. 3 seeds in their respective Class 2A regions. Carrollwood Day is making its first playoff appearance since 2015, while Zephyrhills Christian is making its third straight postseason appearance. Academy at the Lakes (6-0), meanwhile, with one regular season game remaining,

After 29 years as a high school football head coach in the North Suncoast, Sunlake’s Bill Browning is hanging up his headset and putting away his playbook. The longtime coach made the announcement over the weekend after the Seahawks wrapped up its second straight 4-6 campaign. Browning built the Seahawks program from scratch in 2007, turning it into one of Pasco County’s
most dominant programs across the last decade, with a string of seven straight winning seasons. Browning now retires as the seventh-most winningest coach in Pasco County history (73). Prior to Sunlake, Browning coached a combined 17 years for Springstead and Hernando high schools, racking up a combined 92 wins— second all-time among Hernando County coaches.

light rain fell on the evening of Nov. 2 at the 10th annual Swampfest at Land O’ Lakes Heritage Park, but that didn’t keep the mostly young festival crowd from turning out to enjoy the rides, games, food trucks and entertainment. JT Curtis and the Florida Scoundrels entertained the crowd from the Heritage Park stage. Attendance swelled the following day, as the weather was sunny and breezy — simply perfect for a day at festival. The event, hosted by the Land O’ Lakes High School Booster Club, raises money, which benefits all of the students
at the high school. For instance, proceeds from previous festivals have been used to purchase equipment for the weight room. Besides carnival rides and food, the festival offered face painting for kids, the Kim Fish Beer Garden for adults and the Future Farmers’ goat-petting area. Entertainment on the main stage included Show on the Road of Tampa, a song and dance routine of elementary school kids, and the local band The Big Bong Theory. Performers scheduled for Nov. 4 included Nicole’s Dance Center, Karl & Dimarco Dance Studio, Suncoast Dance Academy, Beyond Chaotic, and Pineview Dance and Cheer. The event attracted people of all ages, from across Tampa Bay.

Preparing for a career in veterinary medicine Veterinary technician students at Hillsborough Community College can get hands-on experience through a partnership with the Hillsborough County’s Pet Resource Center. Every semester, about 30 students work with some of the more than 18,000 dogs and cats that come into the animal shelter each year. Pet Resource’s on-staff vet techs teach the students to perform basic duties, such as taking an animal’s temperature, cleaning its ears, and learning the proper way to leash and muzzle a dog. In more advanced classes, there are topics such as pharmacology, animal nursing and exotic pet medicine. The partnership has been in place for
