Advocating to reduce homelessness

When it comes to community service and advocacy, more can always be done in Pasco County. That was the general message put forth by Pasco County Commissioner Mike Wells, at a Nov. 12 East Pasco Networking Group breakfast meeting at IHOP in Dade City.

Pasco County Administrator Michele Baker expects to be very busy over the next year and a half. She’ll be crossing off a to-do list, one by one, before leaving in 2017 to go on a lengthy road trip with her husband. The couple will hit the road with their recreational vehicle and their motorcycles, on a tour of as many baseball parks and national parks as they can squeeze into a year. “That’s been our dream,” Baker said, so letting her contract lapse in July 2017 makes sense. Plans are in the works for an office development on 12.8 acres on the north side of State Road 54, about three-tenths of a mile from Ballantrae Boulevard. The Pasco County Commission has sent a request, from Colwell Avenue Properties IV, of Lutz, for a proposed land use change to state agencies for review. The land use change must occur first, before a request for a rezoning on the property can be considered by commissioners.The Pasco County Planning Commission and the county’s planning staff recommended approval of the change. The current zoning on the property, at 17905 State Road 54, is a residential category that allows up to three dwelling units per acre.

Emmet Cahill, an internationally known singer, will be performing a holiday concert at St.Timothy Catholic Church on Dec. 10. It will be the second time in two years that Cahill, a principal performer with the Irish music show Celtic Thunder, will be making a solo appearance at the Lutz church. As a principal vocalist with Celtic Thunder since 2011, Cahill has performed in more than 350 shows across North America and Australia, including numerous appearances on PBS,The Today Show, Fox and Friends, Home & Family, and QVC, according to Cahill’s website. Some of the famous venues where he has sung include St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City and Carnegie Hall. He also opened the beginning of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York, with a performance of “Danny Boy.” Celtic Thunder is on a break this year, he said. “Last year we did our 10th anniversary

Members of the GFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club visited the Baldomero Lopez State Veterans Nursing Home in Land O’ Lakes, on Veterans Day, to present a donation of $2,000. The funds are to be used for outings, shopping trips for personal items or a treat meal for the Baldomero Lopez resident veterans. The woman’s club has long supported this facility through donations and volunteering for monthly bingo nights. Bill Myers, of Lutz, has been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer — and the community has come together to try to help him. A benefit has been planned for Nov. 23 from noon to 6 p.m., at Land O’ Lakes Heritage Park, 5401 Land O’ Lakes Blvd., in Land O’ Lakes. There’s no admission charge for the event, which will feature musical performances, a variety of vendors and food vendors. Several eateries will provide catered dishes that will be sold for voluntary donations. Patrons, along with Bill, also can enjoy some cake, in recognition of Bill’s birthday the previous day. “He is a wonderful father and grandpa, and a good friend - to those lucky few - who get close enough to earn his trust and loyalty,” said Liz Myers, Bill’s wife. There also will be T-shirts for sale and a silent auction. Other highlights include a Zumba class and a bounce house, both being offered free of charge.

State college seeks to help students in need By Brian Fernandes

When people think about others in need, they don’t necessarily picture college students. But, Pasco-Hernando State College sees the need and has opened a food pantry to help students who are lacking basic necessities. The Bobcat Food Pantry operates at each of the college’s campuses, which are located in Brooksville, New Port Richey, Dade City, Wesley Chapel and Spring Hill. Sarah Brunet, who works for the state college also is the pantry coordinator. Brunet said it became apparent to college staff that there was a need to help students at each of the college’s locations. “It was just really a community awareness that came about to the college and really staff being on the pulse of the students’ needs,” Brunet said. In addition to observation, the college conducted a survey to gather more information. “From the results — really it was a little bit even more shocking than one might have thought,” Brunet said. Besides lacking access to a sufficient supply of food, the college discovered that some of its students are homeless. So, the college came up with a way to take aim at the problem. All of its campuses were closed for a day in October for an All College Day event, and employees came together to collect donations for distribution at the five campuses. Donations came in from the college’s faculty and staff to help address the need. Collected items included nonperishable foods and hygiene items, including soap, shampoo and deodorant. Any students who need some help can pick up some of these items, Brunet said, noting students don’t have to meet any specific requirements or fill out forms.

The college also provides mental health counseling and refers students to soup kitchens, other food pantries, employment opportunities and local organizations who may be able to assist them. The Kiwanis Club of Dade City is one local organization that decided to help out, when it heard about the college students in need. In general, the club tends to focus its efforts on young kids, but when they heard about the collegiate students’ need, they decided to address it. “They (students) just don’t have the money to buy food,” said Penny Morrell, a club member.“Obviously they need the food in order to study and do what they need to do. You don’t want that kind of thing to cause them to stop going to college.” So, every Tuesday in August, the club members would stock up a plastic tub of

supplies and send it to the Dade City campus. Amanda Burns is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Dade City, as well as a student at the city’s PHSC’s Dade City campus. “I was really surprised at the situation some students faced,” she said. She was excited when she heard that the college was starting a food pantry. She mentioned that her fellow students would disclose their challenge of balancing classes, while working to support themselves and their families. Some students also have multiple roommates, in order to afford rent, she added. “We all are responsible for leaving our communities better than we found them,” Burns said.“If we all work together to lift up those who are struggling in our community, it leads to a successful community.” The Kiwanis Club of Dade City plans to

go before its board members to implement donation giveaways at the beginning of each school semester. Brunet stated that the pantry has had a good turnout, allowed faculty to develop good relationships with students and has support to continue going forward. “It’s been a very successful initiative for our students,” she said.“If students’ needs are being met, they’re more likely to be successful in class, and persevere and finish their degree.” PHSC students who are interested in the service, can contact their local branch for dates and times of operation, as they may vary at each campus. Get ready to travel back in time with the Civil War reenactment, “Raid on the Salt Works.” The three-day event will be held at the Pioneer Florida Museum & Village, 15602 Pioneer Museum Road in Dade City. A school field trip will take place on Nov. 22 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Students and their chaperones can take a self-guided tour at numerous stations, depicting the Civil War. These stations include reenactments, time-period music, medical units and narrations. Those attending the field trip event can either purchase food on the premises, or bring outside lunch, for that day only. Gulfside Hospice Helps Over 1,000 Pasco Families Every Year November is National Hospice Month

ospice is the bridge that helps terminally ill patients and their families navigate the health care system in the final stages of life, while also providing emotional and social services support for the entire family. In Pasco County, Gulfside Healthcare Services has been providing hospice services for more than 30 years, and helps over 1,000 families every year care for their loved ones, and provides grief counseling and spiritual guidance to help patients through their final journey. Heading up hospice services at Gulfside is Kathy Postiglione, who started work at the agency 15 years ago as a registered nurse, and today is chief operating officer and senior vice president. “As a nurse, what attracted me to hospice care in the beginning, and still captures my heart today, is its holistic approach to patient care that is driven by the patient and family,” said Postiglione. “It is the most personal type of care found in nursing, and one that has not changed much since the hospice movement was founded in the 1970s.” The hospice philosophy provides care in the comfort, security and privacy of wherever a patient calls home, by bringing together a team of professionals who addresses the patient’s physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs. “Our team of nurses, physicians, ministers and social workers works together to find out what the patient needs, discuss the best options for his or her wishes, and helps to set pain management goals,” said Postiglione. Hospice care begins with a discussion between the doctor and terminally ill patient and the family, who together agree to bring hospice in for a consultation. “Often it’s the patient who says, ‘I’m done, and no longer wants additional treatments,’” explains Postiglione. The initial meeting can be in a patient’s home, hospital, assisted living facility or nursing home, and include nurses, both RN and LPNs, hospice medical staff, social worker and chaplain. Up to 10 people can be at the initial meeting, plus staff from the facility. “We also work with the patient to identify personal goals they want to accomplish – it could be to write their personal story, put together a video, try to re-connect with family members and friends they have lost touch with, and often mend some bridges,” said Postiglione. Once a patient enters hospice care, the Gulfside team provides interdisciplinary medical support and

services, which are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It also has resources to help with legal and financial services involving end-of-life care. “Patients and families are often so overwhelmed by what needs to be done, that they are very anxious. We break down the tasks and set up a plan to help them accomplish their goals, while providing the care the patient needs to relieve pain, and make the journey as peaceful and comfortable as possible,” explains Postiglione. Being in hospice care does not mean patients need to give up treatments, and often continue to see their own doctors. “Patients sometimes want to continue their treatments, and we are here to support the patient in any way we can,” said Postiglione. Since its establishment in 1989, Gulfside Hospice has grown from an organization run primarily by volunteers, to a full-service health care entity that employs over 330 people with an average census of 550 patients. When Gulfside began operations, it had just 15 employees and was servicing 50 patients. While most patients are older adults and seniors, often diagnosed with cancer, Gulfside Hospice also cares for terminally ill children and young adults. Patients typically come into hospice when their prognosis is less than six months, and the average length of stay in the program is 70 days. One area that makes Gulfside Hospice unique compared to other hospice organizations is its ability to provide patients with more expensive medications. “When a patient has a need for a more expensive medication, we never deny the request, because we

have the resources to provide medication that Medicare may not pay for,” said Postiglione. Gulfside has been able to keep up with Pasco’s population growth because of its ability to attract top professionals to its team. “We place a tremendous value on our employees, and consistently seek feedback from them on their challenges, equipment they need, the schedules that work best for their families,” said Postiglione. “We have a very dedicated group of people, most who have worked here for many years, because of the high satisfaction they get by working with our patients and families.” Gulfside Healthcare Services also works with over 200 volunteers, many who become involved after hospice has cared for a loved one. “Many of our volunteers give the gift of presence — which is staying with patients who may not have family or friends close by, until they pass. Others work in our dietary area, bringing meals to patients in our inpatient facilities. We also have volunteers who take care of patients’ pets, and many volunteer at our thrift stores, do office work and help at fundraising events,” said Postiglione. For patients needing critical nursing care, Gulfside Hospice operates the Rucki Hospice Care Center in Zephyrhills and the Gulfside Center for Hospice Care at Heather Hill Healthcare Center in New Port Richey. Its thrift shops are located in Lutz, Dade City, Zephyrhills, New Port Richey and Hudson. “People are often surprised at the range of services we offer at Gulfside Hospice,” said Postiglione. “We are proud of our ability to help many Pasco families in one of their greatest times of need.”

Participants raised $55,784 to help pay for care, support and research programs of the Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Association. The event fell short of its goal of $85,000, but fundraising efforts continue through Dec. 20. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s is destroying our families, our finances and our future,â&#x20AC;? said Michelle Olson,Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Association development manager, in a release. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time to end it,â&#x20AC;? she added. The Pasco County Commission has approved a budget amendment for $215,000, relating to bilingual ballots, election materials and assistance for the 2020 election cycle. The commissionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s action came in response to a request by Pasco County Election Supervisor Brian Corley, who asked for the additional funds to comply with a federal court order and a directive from Gov. Ron DeSantis. The Pasco County Supervisor of Elections Office and 31 other counties were named as party defendants, along with the Florida Secretary of State, in a federal election lawsuit, Corley told commissioners in a Nov. 5 letFILE ter. The lawsuit was initiated Supervisor of Elections Brian Corley asked for $215,000 in in August 2018 and remains additional funding to meet court and state mandates for pending, according to bilingual election materials and assistance. Little Owl Learning Academy expansion The Little Owl Learning Academy is expanding its day care with a second building. The 7,500-square-foot structure is being built at 10925 Trinity Blvd., in Trinity. The building will have several classrooms, office space, a nurse’s station, a laundry room and a catering room. Construction began in September and is expected to be completed by March 2020. An opening date has not been announced.

Chicken Salad Chick to open in Odessa The Chicken Salad Chick restaurant chain will be opening a new location at 12096 State Road 54 in Odessa. The 3,200-square-foot building will have a kitchen in the rear, multiple booths, regular table seating and a drive-thru. Construction began in October. Completion and opening are expected by January 2020.

Mazda car dealership undergoes remodeling Wesley Chapel’s Mazda car dealership is undergoing an indoor renovation at 26944 Wesley Chapel Blvd. Approximately 10,000 square feet of the building’s interior will be redesigned with a new ceiling, lighting and added walls. The structure also will house vehicles for display. The renovation began in August and is expected to be completed by December, with an opening in January 2020.

RE/MAX expanding offices in Pasco The RE/MAX Champions real estate office is among new development going up near the intersection of State Road 54 and Trinity Boulevard. The 12,781-square-foot facility will be located at 11541 Trinity Blvd. The two-story building will have 25 rooms per floor. The first floor will be designated space for RE/MAX, while the second floor will be available for leasing. Its construction began in July and is expected to be completed by July 2020. As fun as it is to host guests for Thanksgiving, it can be challenging to cater to those with strict diets. Guests who can’t eat something will say:“I’m allergic to eggs/nuts/wheat” or “I’m vegetarian/vegan.” But, these days, there also are plenty of fad diets or food trends that people take on as a lifestyle choice and not necessarily for medical reasons. Regardless of the why certain foods are off limits for some — offering an alternative for these guests to eat will make them feel welcomed and included. Some people with food allergies or other food restrictions may choose to bring or make their own food for Thanksgiving or other family events because they didn’t want to be a burden. That’s completely fine, if that’s their choice. Some may even prefer it that way. But, someone traveling and staying at a hotel might not be able to make a dish in advance and bring it over. So, to make it easier for you, when you are hosting the meal, make a dish that not only your strict-diet guests will like, but one that everyone else at the table will enjoy, too. Sometimes it is as simple as swapping out a few ingredients. For example, those following a vegan diet won’t eat any animal products. So, if you’re making sweet potato casserole, use vegan butter, plant-based milk, and vegan marshmallows. (Regular marshmallows have gelatin, which is made up of various animal sources, like bones, ligaments, or pigs’ skin). The sweet potato casserole will taste the same and the non-vegans probably won’t even notice. Also, be sure to take precautions to prevent cross-contact if someone is allergic to a food.This is the same concept as cross-contamination, but in this case we are talking about an allergen and not a pathogen. To avoid cross-contact, be sure to use separate cutting boards, knives, etc., or properly wash and sanitize them in between using the allergenic food and safe food. Also, always wash your hands in between handling the different foods. Gluten and Dairy-Free Dirty Rice Ingredients Rice (typically, 1 cup of rice to 1 ½ cups liquid for four servings of cooked rice) 2 Tbsp olive oil 1 medium yellow onion 2 stalks of celery, diced 8 ounces of fresh mushrooms, chopped Water or Vegetable Stock Salt Pepper

Directions Chop onions, celery, and mushrooms. Keep mushrooms separated from celery and onions. In a large stock pot, sauté celery and onions until tender. Add mushrooms and stir. Add a dash of salt and pepper. Measure your desired amount of rice. Add uncooked rice and stir, lightly toasting the rice. Add your desired liquid (water or vegetable stock) to the proportions on the rice. Stir and bring to a boil. Stay close to watch. Once boiling, turn heat down to low, stir again, place lid on the pot. Cook until rice is tender. Serve warm and enjoy. You can use a gluten-free chicken broth instead of water or vegetable stock if you weren’t also trying to make it plant-based.

Directions Cut your fresh tomatoes into circles and place them on a serving tray. Chop fresh basil (about 1/4 cup basil for three large tomatoes, such as beefsteak). Sprinkle Italian Seasoning herb mixture on the tomatoes. Sprinkle kosher salt and black pepper. Add fresh basil. Just before serving, lightly sprinkle olive oil and balsamic vinegar on the tomatoes. Enjoy!

The 10th annual Tampa Bay Out of the Darkness Community Walk will take place Dec. 14 at Al Lopez Park in Tampa. Pasco County Schools has announced that 32 students earned the Advanced Placement (AP) Capstone Diploma, and six students earned the AP Seminar and Research Certificate last school year. The AP Capstone program develops students’ critical thinking, research, and presentation skills, both individually and as a team. Students conduct academic research on topics of personal interests in two interdisciplinary courses. To receive the diploma, students must earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar,AP Research and four additional AP exams. To receive the certificate, students must earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research. Students focused their research on a range of topics, including the extent to which phthalates used in U.S. food packaging harm human health, whether brine deposits from desalination plants trap excess CO2 in oceans and reduce the effects of ocean acidification, and how the utilization of hexagonal house structures made of hempcrete can create a more cost-effective, durable home. BAHAMAS SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE

Pasco-Hernando State College (PHSC) is collecting donations of school supplies to assist the schoolchildren of the Bahamas.An estimated 18,000 children and their families have been displaced since Hurricane Dorian struck the islands on Sept. 1. Ten schools were destroyed on the island of Abaco alone, while many other schools sustained damages. The children of the Bahamas, some of whom lost family members, classmates, and their homes are transitioning to schools that are undamaged but strained to accommodate additional students. Donations of classroom supplies will be accepted at all PHSC libraries.

I always thought it was political, but it’s a lot more political than I thought.” Much of Wells’ talk focused on the county’s homeless situation and the need for workforce training. With the county’s homeless population numbered as high as 3,000,Wells said it’s important “to help those that want to be helped.” He acknowledged that he’s still “catching heat” from residents who opposed his support of building a family homeless shelter and resource center, in partnership with The Coalition for the Homeless of Pasco County, on the site of the former Boys and Girls Club on Youth Lane in Port Richey. But, Wells went to bat for the homeless: “These homeless people are like you and I. They’re regular people.You just have to take an opportunity to get to know them and get to know these folks.” He argued such a facility and other outreach programs isn’t just enabling area homeless. “Supposedly, that’s a Democrat thing, to help the homeless. No, it’s a humanitarian, kind thing. At the end of the day, it’s the right thing to do,”Wells said. On a related note, Wells believes the forthcoming $128 million expansion of the Land O’ Lakes Detention Center could go a long way toward helping the county’s homeless population get back on its feet. Within the 1,000-bed addition and upgrades to all of the jail’s central services will be a new wing designed to directly address mental illness and addiction, which Wells said is often tied into homelessness.The expansion project is expected to undergo construction in 2021, with completion in fiscal year 2023. Said Wells:“We’re going to be able to do more at the jail to stop that revolving door, because that’s what it is now.They come in the jail, (staff) don’t really do much for them for mental illness or addiction, they leave and come back, they leave and come back. …It’s going to be nice a couple years from now to say, ‘Wow, look what we can do here.’” Also tied into the rehabilitation piece is helping homeless and ex-convicts get back

His concert at St. Timothy in 2017 occurred after Chase White, the church’s music director, was contacted by Jeanne Hatter, who helps Cahill line up his appearances. “At first, I thought it was a scam, but then I learned that he had done a concert earlier in the year at St. Catherine of Sienna Catholic Church in Clearwater,”White said. “Their music director is a good friend, and she is the person who referred us to Emmet and Jeanne as a possible performance venue. “Emmet is a practicing Catholic, and he prefers churches to other concert venues,” White said. “We typically do not allow tickets to be sold for concerts at our church, but we made an exception for this. Emmet is a young artist, and he needs money to continue his work. We were surprised when he donated a large percentage of all proceeds back to our music ministry,”White said. White was delighted when Cahill sang at the church two years ago and is pleased the accomplished singer is making a repeat visit. “I have been a fan of Emmet’s for several years and have followed his career with Celtic Thunder,”White said.“I am a trained singer and have enjoyed much local success; I would have a difficult time naming a singer, professional or otherwise, who is more skilled than Emmet. “Many compare him stylistically to Josh Groban, but I would much prefer to hear Emmet sing any day of the week. His voice is simply unparalleled to my ear,”White said. Despite being highly skilled, White added, “he is remarkably humble and thoughtful.” Cahill said he began singing hymns and Irish songs, at an early age. “My mom was a church singer. My dad was a church organist. Every Sunday we would sing in choir.” Growing up in a musical family, he said, influenced the course of his life. He received a five-year “Schola Cantorum” music scholarship at his high school, St. Finian’s College, in Mullingar. At 18, he began professional training at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. His music has taken him far and wide, giving him a chance to travel to nearly every state in the United States four times.“Alaska and Hawaii are the only two I haven’t sung in yet, so we’ll have to get them at some point,” he said. He enjoys touring, and especially enjoys sharing his music in churches. At churches, he said,“you hear about the community.You hear about all of the projects they’re doing. “Churches are the focal point of so many communities, and you wouldn’t really get, I suppose, to get that insight into a community if you were just going to a regular theater, performing a show,” Cahill said. to work,Wells said. This year the county allocated $700,000 to CareerSource Pasco Hernando’Workforce Re-entry Program, he said. That program connects unemployed and underemployed people with jobs and training they needed to fill any skill gaps.The county initially allocated $350,000 in Penny for Pasco funds for the project last year. About 50 people went through the program with last year’s funding,Wells said. He shared the success story of a masterseducated man who was homeless this time last year and is now making $45 per hour with Pall Aeropower Corporation in New Port Richey. “He fell on tough times, and we were able to help him,”Wells said. The commissioner also noted the county now hires ex-felons for certain positions — something it didn’t do before he was first elected in 2014. Many of those hires now are “kicking butt with the county, getting promoted,” he said. “Everybody makes mistakes,”Wells said. “We all make mistakes, and everybody deserves a second chance.” Though he spoke at the networking meeting as a member of the Pasco County Commission,Wells has announced that he is pursuing a different role. He is running for Pasco County Property Appraiser in 2020.

The county will provide a low-interest forgivable loan of $1.5 million through its PADS and PORS program, which will be secured by a mortgage on the property. The interest rate of the loan is proposed to be set at 1.6% per year, with a 10-year term.The loan balance reduction is based on achieving certificates of completion for the building shells and/or securing tenants for long-term leases. The release of the loan funding is conditioned on the company obtaining necessary comprehensive plan and zoning amendments, the memo says. The ad valorem tax rebate is capped at $1,435,000 based on the current property millage rate and assessed valuation data obtained through the county’s tax appraiser’s office.That will be paid out over a 10-year period, which will begin when the first building shell receives a certificate of completion, the memo adds. The county has estimated that the project will either directly or indirectly create 400 jobs, with an estimated annual payroll of $17.7 million.The project’s total economic benefit to the Gross County Product will average $26.5, according to county estimates. The agenda memo also notes:“The company’s initial economic incentive request was for $4,965,000, but this amount was significantly reduced after extensive negotiations with county staff.”

He acknowledges it was a little odd at first, to be recognized by strangers in public, for his singing. “I didn’t get into music to become famous. “Nowadays, some people pursue the fame more than the music.They go on these reality shows and stuff like that,” he said. While he didn’t avoid public attention, but didn’t invite it, either, he said. “Celtic Thunder was obviously a vehicle that brought my name into millions of homes in America, and so out of that, people would know me in that context, through PBS and through the show. “Certainly, the first year or so, it was a little bit strange, you’d be walking down the street and people stop you. Or, they’d figure out that I like coffee and they’re waiting at the Starbucks — something like that,” Cahill said. But, he added, in his experience “people are generally nice and the reason they pursue you, or come after you, is because they love what you do. “I’m never going to complain about someone coming up and saying how much the music means to them.” Plus, he said, “I think if you’re relaxed with people when they approach you, they’ll reciprocate the same thing. People reflect the energy you give them.” Those choosing to attend Cahill’s concert have the option to attend a pre-show, for an additional charge. The pre-show is a meet-and-greet, where Cahill does a Q&A, poses for photos and signs tickets or CDs. “It’s kind of a getting-to-know-you session,” the vocalist said. But, he added, those attending the concert also get a chance to learn quite a bit about him. “I talk about my life in Ireland, and my life on tour, the things I’ve experienced,” he said. He’s not just a performer on a stage — he reaches out to the audience. “I break down those barriers. I like to see people going away, feeling like they really know me,” Cahill said. “The guy you meet at the concert is the guy you drink a beer with,” he said.

fter finishing runner-up at the past two 4A state championships, Steinbrenner High’s varsity cross-country team won it all this year — defeating 31

other teams. The FHSAA (Florida High School Athletic Association) 4A state championships were held on Nov. 9 at Tallahassee’s Apalachee Regional Mark. The Steinbrenner Warriors were paced by senior Josh King, who finished in sixth place overall, crossing the finish line in 15:52.32 The rest of the team’s top five runners were senior Blake Walker (19th,16:05.88), senior Gabriel Lara (32nd, 16:19.79), junior Zachary Harrigan (45th, 16:26.18) and senior Rama Jonnalgadda (56th, 16:30.95). Steinbrenner’s 129 points were enough to edge out second-place team finisher Nease High (140), despite the latter having three of the race’s top five finishers. Steinbrenner’s showing marked the program’s first-ever state title. After falling just short of that elusive crown in 2017 and 2018, winning it all meant that much more. “You see how hard these guys work, and for them to have that moment, it’s unreal, you can’t really describe it,”Warriors head coach Allison Szponar said.“It was kind of surreal to be a coach…and you really appreciate all that goes into it and how hard that these guys have worked day in and day out in their absolute, unyielding commitment to the team and our mission.” That was especially the case for King, who battled injuries each of the last two years. He missed all his sophomore year with a stress fracture, and only ran a few races as a junior before he was sidelined again. Said King, “I kind of wanted to show who I am and prove my potential, and try to really lead the team because we’ve been runners-up for two years in a row, and we were really hungry for it and I wanted to contribute to it. “I think ending on a high note is really great for me because this is really like all I wanted and this is what I worked for, for so many years.”

King worked to become the team’s No. 1 runner this season. His personal record of 15:50 in September at the Don Bishop Invitational broke the school’s 5K record of 15:56 set in 2012 by Matt Magee, who went on to run cross-country and track at Florida State University. Having his name attached to a state title and a school record humbles King:“I mean, that’s kind of crazy to me, because I thought we’d never be able to reach that record that’s been held for a long time now. Our school’s relatively young, but the guy who formerly had it was like a stud, so we all like thought it wasn’t reachable.” Besides King’s running prowess this season, Szponar said the senior leader served as the team’s quasi-athletic trainer, offering recovery advice and encouragement to fellow runners who went through various aches and pains. King’s own personal recovery also was a team motivator, the coach said. “He leads by example, which is the most important part,” Szponar said, also noting King has a 5.7 weighted GPA.“He worked

back from (injuries) to become an even stronger and better runner by finding what worked with him, and the younger guys will see that, so when they’re complaining of the shin splints or they tweak an ankle or something like that they know that,‘Hey, all is not lost.’” The team’s motto this season was “DNA: Doubt Not Allowed.” Since the start of summer workouts, the team’s mindset for each practice and race was to push hard and not make excuses, Szponar said. “We never give up and we don’t doubt what we’re doing,” the coach said. “If we gave up, we definitely would not have been state champions this year after coming off two straight years of being runners-up.A lot of guys would lose their focus and their drive, but our guys, it spurred them to work even harder and motivated them to achieve what they achieved this year.” King echoed those sentiments, noting the program’s success comes from “a winning culture.” King explained:“We have a team mental-

ity here at Steinbrenner, and we have younger guys that look up to the seniors and kind of try to replicate what they do, and we have an incredible coaching staff.” He added: “Cross-country is such a unique sport in that what you put into it is what you get out of. Like, you don’t line up to the line and (are) naturally 2 minutes faster. It’s literally the hard work that we put into it, and our team worked really hard this year to achieve our goals. “We had a lot of talent and we worked really hard, so I think the outcome that we got was definitely something that we were looking for, and it was really great.” Leading into the state meet, Szponar said the team was confident they could win the whole thing.After all, the Warriors swept its district and regional meets, and had the needed depth across its varsity squad. “The message was,‘This is y’all’s to lose, and the only team that can beat you are yourselves…so all you have to do is do what you’re supposed to do and you get to hoist that trophy at the end of this meet.’” That, they did.

Zephyrhills High product Jeremy Oppenheimer recently scored his 1,000 career point as a member of the Southeastern University Fire basketball team. Oppenheimer, a 6-foot-2 senior guard, accomplished the feat in a 103-93 road loss to Bethel (Tennessee) University on Nov. 9. Oppenheimer, a second-team All-Sun Conference selection last year, has averaged 12.5, 7.7 and 13.8 points per game each of the last three seasons with the Fire, an NAIA school in Lakeland. Prior to Southeastern, Oppenheimer was best known for leading Zephyrhills to the 2016 5A state semifinals his senior year.

risk weather didn’t deter a large crowd from showing up to Sweet Blossom Alpacas’ fifth annual Alpaca Open House, in Dade City. Visitors could get a close up look at Alpacas and Llamas, feed the animals and pose for photographs with the animals near them. The event was held on a 15-acre farm, at 37543 Pappy Road, just minutes off of Interstate 75. Besides checking out the animals, visitors could buy alpaca products, including hats, socks, scarves, shawls, rugs, raw fiber

and yarn. During the open house, one Alpaca photo-bombed a picture, while another gazed in curiosity as a photographer clicked his camera. According to Sweet Blossom’s website, Alpacas are "somewhat timid, but very curious and intelligent,".The website adds: "they are more cat-like than doglike in their attitude towards us humans." Two-year-old Zooey Ferland, of Dade City displayed no fear during her first encounter with a Llama at the open house. She was there with her mom and dad, Kristin and Alex.Alex works at the zoo at Busch Gardens.That’s why Zooey’s name is spelled that way.

Roo likes to bounce

Roo was found at a community park in Tampa. He was less than a year old, underweight and in pretty rough shape. The Wantuch family tried to find his owners for a month, but with no luck, they adopted him. He is named Roo (the ending of kangaROO) because his ears reminded the family of the animal, and he would bounce around in the grass. Roo welcomes Jackie Wantuch and family members home every day with a smile on his face — literally! Roo lives in Lutz.

A team of experts, led by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, is working to care for a pair of endangered Florida panther kittens orphaned after their mom suffered from an unknown neurological disorder affecting panthers and bobcats. The kittens are being cared for at ZooTampa at Lowry Park, one of the state’s top facilities for the rehabilitation of this endangered Florida species. ZooTampa already is home to three panthers that are unable to survive on their own in the wild due to injury or illness. The kittens were living at the zoo’s Tiedemann-Cotton Animal Care Annex, and are now being housed at the Catherine Lowry Straz Veterinary Hospital. Once the kittens are out of quarantine and receive health clearance from the medical team, the zoo plans to place them on public view, where they can serve as ambassadors for their species.

Pasco County Animal Services’ low-cost vaccine and microchip clinic will be open Dec. 4 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., at 19640 Dogpatch Lane in Land O’ Lakes. No appointments are needed.The services are available for both cats and dogs. For information, call (813) 929-1212.

Meet Bruiser Bruiser is a lovely dog and a favorite among the volunteers. He even bounces up and down for attention when people walk by his kennel saying ‘pick me, choose me.’ Bruiser has participated in many of the Pasco County Pack Walks and is a total lovebug. He is beyond smart and knows many basic commands. Bruiser is too smart of a pup to live at the shelter. He is an active boy, so consider him if you like long walks on the beach or hikes. Bruiser is in building C, so please ask someone to take you to him. He is best as an only dog. Just more to love and snuggle with, right?
