collection services to the company’s hospitals in 25 states and Puerto Rico, according to a company statement. News of the company’s plans was announced at the Pasco County Commission’s Dec. 10 meeting, where the board voted on an incentive package aimed at attracting the company, a publicly traded company, whose shares are sold on the New York Stock Exchange. David Engel, Pasco County’s economic growth manager, told commissioners that
the building will be single-story, with an architectural façade that’s consistent with the design standards for the Bexley masterplanned community, Engel said. “It’s a one-story administrative office building. It’s quite a substantial project. There’s over $15 million in capital investment; 220 direct and indirect jobs; 179 will be working at this facility, at a minimum,” Engel said. See HEALTH, page 15A

Learning survival skills After reading the wilderness survival novel, ‘Hatchet,’ by Gary Paulsen, and preparing ahead of time in class, fourth-graders at the Academy at the Lakes in Land O’ Lakes got to experience what it might take to survive a simulated plane crash in the wilderness. They conducted the survival exercise on vacant land owned by the school off of 20 Mile Level Road in Land O’ Lakes. The program was the brainchild of teacher Steph Huff, who teaches reading and writing at the independent private school. Above, 9-year-old Flynn Cummings, of Land O’ Lakes, feels his way around the shelter building module, while suffering from a simulated eye injury. Cummings and his classmates were building a shelter that would keep them dry, by gathering pine needles, grass and sticks, to create an overhang under an uprooted tree.

Using an old water bottle, paper towels, dead leaves, fresh grass and charcoal, students were able to filter dirty, murky water into drinkable water. Lisa Picard’s science class prepared the students ahead of time in the process of water filtration. During this exercise, she provided PH level test strips so that the students could test the safety of their water.
Ten-year-old Raelynn Wornor, of Wesley Chapel, searches through bags of supplies that survived the simulated plane crash, looking for items that could be helpful to start a fire. The bags contained items that would typically be found packed in suitcases. Among the items used to try to build a fire: magnifying glasses, batteries, paper cups, Spanish moss, grass, tissues and sticks.
Bay Area singer shows Troop 33 honors opera in a different light 11 Eagle Scouts
By Brian Fernandes

As a singer,Tatiana Kallmann embraces a not-so-mainstream music genre – popopera. Known also as crossover music, this style fuses modern-day pop songs with classical opera pieces dating back hundreds of years. The soprano will share this type of music at the Unity North Tampa, on Dec. 23, a church which she has attended, and where she has performed previously. Kallmann, a Colombia native, grew up in a musical household in Tampa. “My parents do listen to a lot of music. My father is definitely a huge lover of music - different genres, so I listened from classical to rock. Different genres that exposed me to a wider range of musical styles, which maybe other children may not have been exposed to,” she said.
The environment helped her love of music to flourish. At an early age, Kallmann became intrigued with opera after hearing her best friend sing “Ave Maria,” by the composer Schubert. “It was very pristine,” she recalled.“I was like,‘Wow, what is that?’ “I had never heard operatic singing or classical singing before.” Along the way, the singer said she’s been influenced by Whitney Houston, Lady Gaga, Andrea Bocelli and Adele. However, hearing pop-opera songs by Sarah Brightman made her want to perform them. Her voice instructor encouraged her to pursue singing at Blake High School, a magnet school for the performing arts in Tampa. Next, she received her bachelor’s degree See OPERA, page 2A

Hanukkah begins Dec. 22 The eight-day Jewish festival known as Hanukkah or Chanukah, this year runs from the evening of Dec. 22 to the evening of Dec. 30. The celebration, also known as the “festival of lights,” commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple of Jerusalem in second century B.C., where according to legend, Jews had risen up against their Syrian Greek oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt. As the story goes, once the Greeks were run out of the city, Maccabees took possession of the temple, and worked to purify it from the invasion.A menorah was required to burn throughout the night every night, but there was only a day’s supply of olive oil available — and it would take a week to produce more.Yet, the oil somehow lasted
eight days, creating a “miracle” that has been celebrated ever since. Hanukkah is celebrated toward the end of the Jewish month Kislev, which usually falls in November or December of the common calendar. Jews today acknowledge the holiday by lighting a menorah (a candelabrum, also called a Hanukkiah) for eight nights, adding a candle each day until all eight, plus a head candle, are lit together. The holiday is celebrated with traditional foods, such as pontshkes and latkes (jamfilled doughnuts and potato pancakes), along with gift exchanges, songs and melodies, prayers, and a recounting of the miracle. The holiday is also a time for kids to play games with a dreidel, a four-sided spinning top with a Hebrew letter on each side.

The Pasco County Commission on Human Trafficking — which has been operating for five years — has been working to combat human trafficking. The Pasco County Commission passed a resolution in 2014 to form the commission on human trafficking. That action followed a growing awareness of human trafficking that was taking place in Pasco County, said Liana Dean, chairperson of the Pasco County Commission on Human Trafficking. “Law enforcement and child welfare were beginning to – within their respective sectors – recognize and see that human trafficking was an issue,” Dean said. It’s a problem that spans across the globe, and also hits home here. The human trafficking commission is made up of 11 members who represent different aspects of the community, including the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, BayCare Behavioral Health, the Pasco County Commission, Pasco County Schools, nongovernmental organizations, businesses, child welfare and the faithbased community. The commission does not directly interact with victims or their traffickers, but makes referrals when there are reports. It directs attention toward law enforcement, shelters and the National Human Trafficking Hotline. “Everything the commission is doing is geared toward awareness, education and advocacy,” Dean said. That work includes holding public forums. The community also is invited to ask questions or weigh in with their thoughts or concerns. Stephanie Costolo, the commission’s vice chair, is a representative of the U.S. Institute Against Human Trafficking. “Survivors have very different needs,” Costolo said.“They may need to go to drug detox, or they might need a domestic vio-

forced marriages [and] child soldiers,” Costolo said. Traffickers can take advantage of those who already come from a traumatic background or put fear in those who are undocumented immigrants, she said. The commission has worked to raise awareness about the problem through social media, public service announcements on T.V., and billboard messages. The commission also was instrumental in helping to pass a state mandate, implementing a human trafficking curriculum for those in kindergarten through 12th grade. Individuals who want to help with the cause are encouraged to give donations to the commission or the organizations they collaborate with. Another opportunity, to learn about the problem, is being presented on Jan. 27 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at PascoHernando State College – Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch, 2727 Mansfield Blvd., in Wesley Chapel. Register at PHSC.edu/about/events. While it’s important for community members to be on the lookout for clues regarding human trafficking, they should not directly engage in the situation, Dean said. “The public’s role is to observe and report,” Dean said.“It is never to get involved. That is potentially dangerous for, not only the individual, but also the potential victim.” Report your suspicions to local law enforcement or the National Human Trafficking Hotline. The hotline can be reached at (888) 373-7888 or by texting, 233733 (BeFree).

SCHOOL BOARD REORGANIZES
The District School Board of Pasco County elected Colleen Beaudoin, District 2, as chair, and Allen Altman, District 1, as vice chair. Both positions are for one-year terms.
NEW BUDDY BENCHES
A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on Dec. 12 at Denham Oaks Elementary in Lutz for the newly installed Buddy Benches. Through a Systems of Care grant opportunity, the Pasco County school district was able to expand compassionate schools work by purchasing 13 Buddy Benches. The bench is a simple idea to foster friendship on the playground, to promote an inclusive school community.
The Laker/Lutz News likes to keep our readers informed about news from our local schools, including upcoming events, photos of events, recognitions and so on. Submissions need to include who, what, where, when, contact information, identifications for individuals in a photo (unless it is a large group), and a photo credit. Please send your information two weeks prior to desired publication date, and email it to news@lakerlutznews.com. If you would like The Laker/Lutz News to consider coverage of an event, send a request to the same email.
Children who are feeling emotional or lonely can sit on the bench as a clear signal to others on the playground that they are in need of social connection. Students in the schools with Buddy Benches will receive instructions on how to respond when they see a peer sitting on the bench. Upcoming ribbon-cutting ceremonies at area schools include: • Cox Elementary School, 37615 Martin Luther King Blvd., Dade City: Dec. 20 at 2 p.m. • Bexley Elementary School, 4380 Ballantrae Blvd., Land O’ Lakes: Jan. 16 at 8 a.m. • New River Elementary School, 4710 River Glen Blvd.,Wesley Chapel: Jan. 22 at 8:40 a.m.
FINANCIAL AID TIP
According to the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA), high school seniors should keep track of deadlines for applying for college financial aid. The KHEAA offers these tips: • File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible. • Check with the financial aid offices of the schools to which you’ve applied, to determine if they require any forms other than the FAFSA. • Look for scholarships using a free online scholarship search. • Attend any college fairs and financial aid seminars offered at your high school or in your area. If a company charges a fee for helping with applications, remember that you can do that yourself for free. If you decide to pay for help, make sure the company is reputable by checking with the state attorney general’s office or the Better Business Bureau in your area, as well as the area where the firm is located. SAINT LEO SERVICE DAY
The Saint Leo University community united far and wide to perform volunteer acts in honor of those who served in the U.S. military. While some of the volunteer opportunities were organized by the university, employees also could work with the organization or agency of their choice. Some of the projects included cleaning a 1-mile stretch of a downtown Tampa street, to feeding the homeless in a park in Savannah, Georgia; from making toys and treats at University Campus for rescue animals, to sorting items at a Habitat for Humanity store in Newport News,Virginia. Those in attendance could view items on display, too, including war posters, photos and paintings from the WWI era, and artifacts including helmets, and medals and ribbons awarded to soldiers. Making a difference Eagle Scout projects completed by members of Troop 33: • Ethan Fuhrmeister restored plantings and benches at the 9/11 Memorial Garden at Freedom High School. He was helped by community members, teachers, sports teams and sports clubs. He comes from a family in which his father, four cousins, two uncles and two great uncles are Eagle Scouts. • Evan Hernandez built a Butterfly Garden and Finch Aviary at the Florida Exotic Bird Sanctuary in Hudson. He is grateful to Patricia Norton for the opportunity to beautify the entrance of the sanctuary and provide a habitat for the 30 finches and attract local butterflies. • Phillip Morrical focused on creating multiple habitats and nesting boxes for the Florida scrub jay. He built six nesting boxes at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, in Land O’ Lakes. He also provided education to the local community about the plight of the bird and sold nesting boxes to local residents who wanted to help save it. • John A. Turbessi, a first generation Venezuelan-American, designed his service project to help Venezuelan families in light of the ongoing humanitarian crisis there. He organized a food and supply drive, and with the help of the Our Lady of the Rosary parish community and others, he was able to send boxes containing more than 1,500 pounds of food, first aid and personal supplies — helping 20 families and 89 people in the process.
SCOUTS, from page 1A man of the National Eagle Scout Association, put their accomplishment into perspective: “Rare is there a time when 11 young men are awarded the Eagle award at one time, from a single troop,”Tsuru said. Still, that accomplishment is just the beginning of what being an Eagle Scout means, Tsuru continued. He said they will be tested in life. “As a businessman, it’s easy to be swayed to cut corners, hide some things, or not be fully transparent, in order to get ahead in business. By maintaining the Scout Oath and the Scout Law as your guiding principles, you will maintain honor, truthfulness, and give all of the glory to God for your successes. “At the end of the day, principle-centered businesses see more successes than business that does not embrace these core principles. “I want to remind you that your job has just begun.” Plus, Tsuru added:“I’m asking you to give back and make an impact on a younger scout.” Families and friends gathered to mark the occasion, at a ceremony that was planned and conducted by Scouts in Troop 33. It was a dignified event, which began with performances by Roses in the Sawgrass, a choral group that served as a prelude to the program. Scout John Turbessi, who was among those receiving the rank of Eagle Scout, provided a trumpet call, and members of the Troop 33 Color Guard presented the colors. There were numerous speakers, including the Hon. Judge Ralph C. Stoddard, who was there to represent Chief Judge Ron Ficarrotta of the 13th Judicial Court. Judge Stoddard told the audience,“No one understands perhaps better than we do, the consequences of failed parenting, or the benefits of good parenting. “Here, today, we’re here to celebrate you because of the wonderful things that you have done for these young men and for our community.” He also read a letter sent by the chief judge: “In achieving the Eagle Scout status, you’ve demonstrated that you are worthy of honor, which we know that you share with your family and troop today. “Because we understand that this was an arduous task and most worthy of celebration, we join you in commemoration of this achievement.” Chris McBride, director of youth ministry at Our Lady of the Rosary, was the keynote speaker. He reminded the Scouts being honored: “You’re not self-made guys. None of us are, here. Be sure to be grateful and to give back. “Always check in with yourself and say, ‘How am I living? How is my life making a difference for others?’” he said. Monsignor Ron Aubin, pastor of the church, said “Congratulations to all of our Eagle Scouts. You make Our Lady of the
• Gabriel N. Vega enlisted the aid of others to help him construct a Rosary Garden at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, and to purchase a large Virgin Mary statue centerpiece. • Spencer Huffman did a project that linked into Gabriel Vega’s Rosary Garden. The two scouts divided a major request by a parishioner, that included a wish list of a 200foot pathway for the 14 Stations of the Cross in “The Way of the Cross Garden.” The two projects were combined to produce an area of worship. • Michael Thibeau responded to Monsignor Ron Aubin’s vision for the landscaping surrounding the church’s newly constructed youth center. The scout took the pastor’s vision and combined it with his father’s landscaping expertise to create a representation of the Garden of Gethsemane at the Mount of Olives. • Miguel Mockabee created additional space for the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Pasco at Our Lady of the Rosary church that had been needing space for dignity and privacy of its clients. • Louis Mooney Jr. created a GaGa Pit at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church to promote more outdoor recreation for children of the parish and its youth ministry. • Cesar A Castillo did a GaGa Pit project at an elementary school in Tampa. • Matthew Gansemer helped to refurbish the food pantry for St. Vincent de Paul.
Rosary parish very proud this afternoon. I know your parents are proud.Your Scout leaders are proud. And, I am very particularly proud of each and every one of you. “You have achieved a significant goal,” the pastor said. He also told the audience about a book he read many years ago that helped him to realize that the happiest people are those who set goals. “People without goals become listless. They experience discontent, maybe even depression. It is people who are setting reasonable goals and working toward those goals that find authentic joy in life,” the pastor said. “I want to encourage you to set reasonable goals on a regular basis. Multiple goals. Goals that you might achieve in the next few months. Goals that might be in the next few years. And maybe even goals that are longterm. “It’s with moving toward these goals, and striving toward them, that we grow,” he said. The pastor also thanked the Scouts, noting several of their projects have enhanced the church grounds. Bob Hall, Scoutmaster of Troop 33, thanked the 19 assistant scoutmasters, the parents and others for their support. “I don’t want people to think of us as an Eagle factory. Our troop is not about producing Eagles. What we’re about is producing leaders, and putting good leaders into the community,” Hall said. The Scoutmaster also reminded the young men being honored: “Even though we help you along the way, this is something that you did. Not something that we did for you.” “The accomplishment is only reached by about 4% that try for Eagle. “I’m proud of you guys. I’m proud of what you stand for,” Hall said. He told the audience that the Scouts being honored have different ambitions, ranging from becoming professors, to pursuing environmental science, to becoming lawyers, scientists, computer hackers, a politician and even a sports car designer. And, three of the Scouts are going to be assistant scoutmasters, Hall added. “Getting Eagle, it’s in your heart. It’s not the badge that I put on your chest. It’s not the scarf that you’re going to be wearing around your neck. It’s not the certificate that’s signed by somebody famous. Eagle is something that you’re going to carry for the rest of your life. “And, how you carry that torch is up to you,” Hall said. In addition to the presentation of the Eagle awards, certificates also were presented by from Judge Stoddard and Ben Strakos from the Knights of Columbus. Each of the new Eagle Scouts also offered a few comments. Some were funny, and some were touching — but all of them offered a sense of appreciation for the help they received along the way. Afterwards, there was a reception for the Scouts and guests, followed by a special Mass.

This rendering depicts the planned office for Encompass Health Corporation, which plans to bring 179 jobs to Pasco County.
HEALTH, from page 1A The capital investment includes acquisition of the land, according to county documents. Engel said the project “contributes more than $10 million a year to the gross county product,” which amounts to a return on investment of more than 10 to 1. Commissioners approved a $983,000 incentive package to attract the company. Various features of that package are: • A job creation incentive for 117 of the administrative jobs (amounting to $234,000) • The mobility fee waiver for Class A office construction (estimated at $329,000) • A 10-year ad valorem reimbursement (estimated at $290,000); the first five years will be 50% of their ad valorem payment; and 25% for the back end • An employee training grant ($50,000) • A waiver of building county permit fees (maximum of $80,000) Also, because the company falls within the definition of a qualified targeted industry, the county is offering “rapid response team and expedited permitting,” Engel said. Besides saving time, the expedited process is “a large financial incentive to the applicant,” Engel said. Bill Cronin, CEO and president of the Pasco Economic Development Council Inc., said ”We’re really excited about this company coming in, right into Central Pasco, creating some wonderful jobs.” The Pasco EDC executive also noted that this project indicates that master-planned communities, such as Bexley, are started to develop their employment entitlements, thus rounding out the developments. “Now, this development has true live, work, play at their development. You’ve got residential. You’ve got jobs. You’ve got retail. That means less people, potentially, on the road,” Cronin said. Diane Daerr, director of Encompass Heath’s Central Business Office, said “we’re
really excited about our new operation. The new building will allow us to have a lot of amenities for our workforce. Fitness center. Walking trails. “We really like the setting of Bexley, and the walking trails and bike trails in that general area. “You can literally live across the street from where our building is going to be, so we’re very excited about that,”” Daerr said. Pasco officials have been working to shed the county’s image as a bedroom community, where thousands commute daily to jobs in other places. “I think there’s something to be said about having a publicly traded company choosing Pasco for location for this regional operation. They will be serving 25 states here, and Puerto Rico. So, this is a real regional footprint for them. And, these jobs are good jobs,” Cronin said. “As you all know, we’ve been focusing on our life sciences cluster,” he said. In fact, Moffitt Cancer Center is seeking to boost its share of the state’s annual cigarette tax money to support expanded cancer care and research, both in Hillsborough and Pasco counties. If the proposal moves forward, the new location in Pasco County would be near the Suncoast Parkway and State Road 52. It is being viewed by local leaders as having the potential to be a catalyst that would transform the Central Pasco landscape. Cronin said that attracting new companies to Pasco, such as Encompass Health, means that talent being developed in the life sciences industry will have a place to call home. Cronin also emphasized the project’s strategic location, near State Road 54 and the Suncoast Parkway, with easy access to Tampa International Airport. Pasco County Commission Chairman Mike Moore applauded the company’s decision to locate in Pasco, which he describe as “the fastest growing county in the region, if not the fastest growing in the state and one of the fastest growing in the nation.”

G
lenn Woods knows a thing or two about pottery. The Indiana native has been a potter since 1974. Now, he and Keith Herbrand are co-owners of Pottery Boys, a studio on Bogie Lane in Palm Harbor. The studio is in a converted garage — filled with pottery wheels, pounds of clay and batches of handmade glazes. And, on Dec. 7 and Dec. 8, it was one of five studio stops on the 12th annual Tampa Bay Tour De Clay. The event featured studio presentations, which included demos, kiln openings and discussions. Besides Pottery Boys, other stops on the tour were Hidden Lake Pottery, Odessa; Schiemann Pottery, St. Petersburg; Wellman & Welsch Pottery, Lutz; and, San Antonio Pottery, San Antonio. This year’s Tour De Clay featured 33 guest artists, each offering an array of unique pieces. One of the highlights at Pottery Boys was a crystalline kiln opening. During the kiln opening,Woods pulled fired pieces out of both a glossy and a matte glaze kiln. He brought a few of the pieces out to discuss his glazes and technique, how clay variations can effect the glaze’s behavior, and the trial-and-error process he experiences while perfecting his recipe. One of the special guests during the event was Judy Wenig-Horswell from Indiana, who was Woods’ art teacher at
Northridge High School in Middlebury, Indiana. Guest artists at Pottery Boys Studio, included Larry Allen, from Birmingham, Alabama, who said the events of Sept. 11 inspired him to incorporate a unity design in all his pieces. Jennifer McCurdy from Martha’s Vineyard was another featured artist. Her porcelain pieces are wheel thrown, then altered, carved and sanded by hand before being fired bare (without a glaze) to cone 10. Cone 10 temperature allows the porcelain to become nonporous and translucent. There was also another guest artist, Ellen Cole, of Tarpon Springs. Cole was a potter until she contracted Lyme Disease around 20 years ago, while she was hiking. Because of her weakened condition, she no longer had the strength in her wrists or legs to work with traditional clay. About 15 years ago, she attended a class at the Dunedin Fine Art Center, where she learned about a medium called fine silver clay. This medium involves using small batches of the material, not much larger than a postage stamp. Because of its small size, Cole found she could tolerate working with her hands again. She now creates very intricate jewelry — sometimes taking months to complete a single piece. She often incorporates complicated layers over layers of fine silver clay, and uses items such as empty ball point pens and an antique broach to produce various textures in her designs.
A wall of pottery, belonging to the Pottery Boys Studio owner Glenn Woods, is displayed during the 12th annual Tampa Bay Tour De Clay. Woods and the guest artists had pieces available for sale during the tour.
Ellen Cole, of Tarpon Springs, right, smiles with her husband of 57 years, Sonny, as she greets visitors of the Tour De Clay at Pottery Boys Studio in Palm Harbor. The Tarpon Springs resident works exclusively with the medium silver metal clay to create one-of-a-kind jewelry. A former potter, she now works in small batches of this medium because of the effects that Lyme Disease has had on her body.

PET PAWS HOLIDAY TRAVEL WITH PETS
As family and friends travel for the holidays, BluePearl Specialty and Emergency Pet Hospital reminds pet owners of the importance of the comfort and safety of the furry member of the family. With the right preparation, pet owners can happily bring pets along by car, plane or train. Veterinarians at BluePearl offer these tips to ensure a safe and low-stress trip: TRAVEL BY CAR: • Don’t allow pets to roam in the car. Pets can injure themselves while loose in the car, but they can also distract the driver, and even become a projectile that hits human occupants in an accident. Keep pets in a crate or carrier (with enough room for your pet to stand and turn around in) and anchor it to the vehicle using a seat belt or other secure means. • Keep your pet in the back seat. Whether your pet is harnessed or kept in a carrier or crate, it is best to keep them in the back seat. Just like small children, they can be injured by front-seat airbags. • Don’t allow pets to stick their heads out of the window. Dogs and cats should be kept inside the car. Pets who stick their heads out the window are exposed to dangerous debris that can cause injury, and in colder climates, air can be forced into their lungs, causing illness. Never transport a pet in the back of an open pickup truck. • Plan rest stops ahead of time. Plan rest stops to allow your pet to stretch, eliminate and hydrate. Pets can become dehydrated on long road trips, so bring along a portable bowl and frequently stop to let your pet drink. • Equip your pet with identification. Make sure your pet has a collar, ID tag, and leash, and never let them leave the car without it. Consider microchipping your pet, so a simple scan can identify you as their owner if they become lost. • Never leave your pet alone in a car. Excessive cold or hot temperatures can pose serious health hazards for pets, including hypothermia or heat stroke. Be sure to keep your pet supervised at all times (even if that means taking turns with a friend or family member at a rest stop). • Stick to their normal diet. Changes in diet can cause GI distress in pets. Bring bottled water and your pet’s food from home to avoid digestive upset. AIR TRAVEL: There are certain dog and cat breeds — bulldogs, pugs, Boston terriers, and Himalayan and Persian cats — that are particularly susceptible to the hazards that air travel can bring. These animals have short nasal passages and more narrow airways, which puts them at higher risk for breathing difficulty and heat stroke, especially in poorly ventilated or temperature-controlled areas. • Opt for cabin over cargo, if possible. Most airlines allow cats or small dogs in the cabin, for an additional fee. There are limits to the number of animals per-
Share your pet news
If you have pet news about adoptions, walks or other events for pet owners and their pets, you can let us know by sending us an email. We just need the basics: who, what, when, where and why. The information should be submitted two weeks prior to the desired publication date. We also need a contact name and number, in case we have questions. There is no guarantee of publication, but we consider each item we receive. If you’d like to make a submission, send it to news@lakerlutznews.com. Readers can now find Pets of the Week and Local Wildlife photos on our website at LakerLutznews.com, under the Pets/Wildlife link. mitted in the cabin, so make reservations well in advance. • Use direct flights. Transferring flights can be stressful for both you and your pet. This is especially true if your pet must travel in the cargo hold. If cargo is the case, and you will be traveling in summer or winter months, choose flights that will accommodate temperature extremes. • Acclimate your pet to the carrier. Give your pet several weeks to become familiar with the travel carrier. Hard carriers usually come in two pieces, so try placing your pet’s bedding in the bottom piece—with the top detached—to make your pet feel comfortable. • Attach a travel label to the carrier. Mix-ups can happen. Equip the carrier with an ID label that includes your name, permanent address, telephone number, final destination, and where you or a contact person can be reached as soon as the flight arrives. • Refrain from feeding before the flight. A full stomach might cause your pet to be uncomfortable during travel, so refrain from feeding them two hours to four hours before a flight. However, you should give your pet water right up to your travel time.
MAKE A SNUFFLE MAT
The Land O’ Lakes Library, 2818 Collier Parkway, will host “Crafting with a Cause: Snuffle Mats” on Dec. 27 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., for ages 9 to 18. Participants can learn how to make an enrichment item for dogs in the animal shelter. Materials will be provided, and students can get volunteer hours. The final products will be donated to Pasco County Animal Services. The child or parent must have a library card to register, and complete a Foundry waiver. For information, call (813) 929-1214.
