New elementary school gets a name By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com
The school formerly known as Elementary W now has a name. Pasco County School Board members voted unanimously on March 15 to name the school Wiregrass Elementary. The board chose the name after little discussion. They decided to go with a name that reflects the community where the school will open in August. Board member Cynthia Armstrong made the motion for the school’s new name, saying she was recommending Wiregrass, rather than Wiregrass Ranch, to avoid potential confusion with the nearby Wiregrass Ranch High School. Armstrong also noted that she prefers naming schools based on their location be-

cause it helps to build a sense of community. She also noted that naming a school for a person can lead to problems later on.“Down the road, when we want to repurpose a building, we want to repurpose a program, it makes it very difficult to do so because people have very strong feelings, as well they should,”Armstrong said. “I have always felt strongly that geograph-
ic names are the way to go,” agreed School Board Chairwoman Joanne Hurley. The new school will be led by Principal Steve Williams and Assistant Principal Melissa Bidgood. Williams joined Pasco County Schools in 2001, working as a literacy specialist, then assistant principal and then principal. Most recently, he led the Office for Teaching and Learning, supporting K-12 learning in all Pasco County Schools. Bidgood joined Pasco County Schools in 2004. She spent the first part of her career at Sunray Elementary School followed by Sand Pine Elementary as a classroom teacher. She later became a literacy coach at Seven Springs Elementary School, interned at Sunray Elementary as assistant principal and, most recently, has served as an assistant principal at Seven Oaks Elementary School.

Easter season brings spiritual celebrations By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com
As Easter approaches, churches across The Laker/Lutz News coverage area are preparing for a host of spiritual activities. Some churches will be hosting Good Thursday, Holy Friday and Easter Vigil services, while others will be focusing primarily on Easter Sunday services. There will be community events, as well, to celebrate the season. In Zephyrhills, the Zephyrhills-Wesley Chapel Ministerial Association will be leading the annual Good Friday Walk of the Cross. Adults and families are invited to the walk, which takes participants on a 1 ½-mile pilgrimage with stops outside seven Zephyrhills churches. Along the way, individuals take turns carrying the cross to different churches, and at each stop, a scriptural verse and reflection is shared. The first stop on the walk will be on March 25 at 5:30 p.m., at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, at 5316 11th Street. The walk concludes about 6:45 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church, 38635 Fifth Ave., where there will be a Good Friday service. “This is such an amazing event, to have people from all different faiths and all different styles and denominations of Christianity, coming together for something in unity,” said Dennis Harmeson, president of the ministerial association. Until he participated in the walk, he said,“I had never seen anything like it,” regarding people’s willingness to lay aside the things they disagree about, in a show of unity about the things they agree on. On Easter Sunday, Florida Hospital Zephyrhills will partner with the ministerial association to present an annual Easter sunrise service, on March 27, beginning at 7 See EASTER, page 11A

If you’re curious about the history of Wesley Chapel, there’s a new event designed to help you learn about the community’s past. Pasco-Hernando State College is hosting the Wesley Chapel History Fair on March 31, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the college’s Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch, 2727 Mansfield Blvd. The event will be in the college’s conference center. The event will showcase stories and anecdotes about the area, as it has evolved from a rural community into a center for growth in Pasco County. Madonna Jervis Wise will talk about her latest book, “Images of America: Wesley Chapel,” which recounts what Wesley Chapel was like when the community still had moonshiners, alligator hunters, turpentine and timber operations. Wise also will be signing copies of her book, which will be available for purchase at the event. Other highlights will include presentations from two women who will share stories about their family members. Stephanie Black, director of the Pioneer Museum & Village, will recount tales of the legendary Lonnie Tucker, and Quinn Porter Miller will share vignettes about James H.
“Wiregrass” Porter, and her family. J.Thomas Touchton, founding Chairman of the Tampa Bay History Center, will share the J. Thomas and Lavinia W. Touchton Collection of Florida Cartography. Angelo Liranzo, a librarian who spearheaded the digitizing of more than 100 years of area newspapers, will provide a hands-on demonstration regarding local historical resources. Wise, who has also written local history books about Zephyrhills and Dade City, said it was harder to find a starting point in Wesley Chapel because the community did not have a city hall or established town center. So, she relied on her knowledge of genealogy and tracked down people she could interview, which led to more interviews and documents to help tell the community’s story. Putting together the book meant interviewing scores of pioneer descendants, culling through land records, visiting properties and even putting together a map to get a sense for what it used to be like. As Wise did her research, she said one surprising discovery was that women in the community had long been acknowledged for their contributions. “Pioneer women of Wesley Chapel were revered for their tireless days of toil, with a nurturing spirt and the skill to raise large families,” she wrote in her book.

Pasco Animal Services wants higher fees By Kathy Steele
ksteele@lakerlutznews.com
A program to spay and neuter pets, and to educate the public on the value of the surgeries, is facing a financial crunch. Reserve funds to keep the program afloat could be depleted within three years — unless new revenues are found, and some expenses cut. Pasco County commissioners got a preview of recommendations to add money to the coffers of Pasco Animal Services at a March 15 workshop. Those recommen- Jack Mariano dations include a mandatory $5 fee for a cat license, an increase in an unaltered dog license from $35 to $40, and adoption fees of $85 for small breed dogs and puppies. Kittens younger than four months could cost $55. Other adoption fees would be unchanged, with dogs costing $70 and cats, $40. No fee increases are anticipated for the county’s low-income program for reducedcost sterilizations for qualified applicants. Those rates are $10 for cats and $20 for dogs. No decisions were made. Pasco County staff members are expected to bring the issue back to commissioners later. In some ways,Animal Services is suffering from too much success. Since 2012, more than 10,000 dogs and cats have been sterilized. “That’s pretty significant,” said Mike
Shumate, the county’s animal services manager. The county currently contracts with the nonprofit Spay Pasco to manage the spay and education program, as well as the trap-neuter-return program to sterilize feral cats. That contract expires in February 2017. Animal services is recommending that the county takes over the programs, estimating potential savings of $18,000 annually. Over the years, the growing demands for sterilization, and for educational presentations at schools and elsewhere, have strained finances, and drained reserve funds. Deficit spending for the program is ongoing annually, and the coffers could be empty by 2019. As an example, the trap-neuter-return program cost about $48,000 in 2013, but two years later cost more than $136,000. One solution would be to renegotiate contracts Pasco has with area cities, and increase fees for the surgeries. The current contracts are with Dade City, Zephyrhills, New Port FILE PHOTOS Richey, Port Richey, San Antonio, the Pasco County Animal Services frequently seeks the community’s help to give pets at the shelter a town of Saint Leo and Safety Harbor. permanent home. Seeking to stop illegal dumping By Kathy Steele
ksteele@lakerlutznews.com
The collection bins that people fill with donations of shoes and clothes are a familiar sight around the community. For the most part, they help local charities that operate thrift stores or have giveaway programs to benefit low-income individuals and families. In most cases, they’re clean, well marked and routinely emptied. But, not always. And now, the Pasco County Commission and the Zephyrhills City Council are ready to clamp down on those bins that quickly become illegal dumpsites, and eyesores for the community. Many of the bins that become dump sites appear to be operated by organizations seeking clothing items to sell. Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moore came to a February commission meeting with photographic proof of the problem. “What happens is a lot of organizations will collect items and sell them on the open market,” Moore said.“You’ll see people abandon the bins at times, and at times they don’t make regular collections.” Pasco County staff members are reviewing ordinances from Deerfield Beach, Jacksonville,Tampa and Manatee County as models for a local draft ordinance to bring to county commissioners. The city of Zephyrhills also is considering an ordinance to curb similar illegal dumping issues at bins within city limits. City Councilman Lance Smith put the topic on the council’s March 14 agenda. Within the next month a draft ordinance should be ready for the city council’s review. Smith’s first encounter with the issue came about two years ago when he spotted a rusty looking donation bin in the right of
way by Woodland Elementary School. Code enforcement removed it. Not every clothing bin is creating eyesores, but Smith said,“When someone leaves a mattress, the next thing it’s a television. It becomes a dumping ground.” With Pasco County poised to adopt an ordinance, Smith said it makes sense for Zephyrhills to do the same. Recently, code enforcement investigated a complaint about illegal dumping at a bin at the Winn-Dixie shopping center on County Road 54. The property owner was notified, said Bill Burgess, Zephyrhills’ building code administrator. “They had it cleaned up and, I believe, thereafter removed,” Burgess said. He recalled another bin that from a distance looked legitimate. On closer inspection, it was made of plywood and hand-painted. It had no contact or identifying information. Draft ordinances for Pasco and Zephyrhills likely would require registration and set standards for maintenance and operation. Moore said Pasco’s ordinance could require that the bins be clearly marked with a business name, a contact phone number and rules on keeping areas around the bins cleared. Written permission from property owners also should be required, he said. Moore said he heard from one landowner who told him that over the past years he has had to remove bins and illegally dumped materials from his properties, at a cost of hundreds of dollars. The ordinance isn’t meant to make money for the county or to hamper businesses, property owners and agencies that act responsibly, Moore said. “The last thing we want to do is hurt legitimate charities,” Moore said. “We want them to keep doing what they’re doing.”

Bradley Massacre makes history in Pasco A Seminole war party led the attack Knowing Your History By Doug Sanders Special to The Laker
COURTESY OF UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA LIBRARY
V
arious accounts, published on the historic website Fivay.org, tell the story of the Bradley Massacre, reportedly the last Seminole war party attack on a settler’s homestead east of the Mississippi River. Capt. Robert Duke Bradley was one of the first white settlers to live south of the Withlacoochee River, according to those reports. He wasn’t feeling well on May 14, 1856, and was awaiting supper with his wife and children that evening. The captain, who was bedridden on his farm, was a veteran who had fought against the Seminole Indians as far north as the Suwannee River. He had resigned his commission, because he was no longer a healthy man. The skirmishes he’d been involved in had damaged his lungs, and for the rest of his life, he would require medical services from the army doctor stationed at Fort Brooke. Bradley had personally surveyed a homestead in a remote area that would be later known as Darby, a community in Pasco County. It was frontier country with its share of moccasin tracks, but the good news was that no Indian sightings had been reported for many years. But, the evening of May 14, 1856, would forever change the 53-year-old’s life. Bradley — who had always been willing to defend his land granted under the Armed Occupation Act — suddenly heard sounds of a war whoop and gunfire of a Seminole war party. The attack would be recorded as the last attack on a settler’s homestead east of the Mississippi River. Bradley’s 11-year-old daughter, Mary Jane, was quickly shot through the shoulder and heart. The captain saw her come into his
Barracks and tents at Fort Brooke in Tampa Bay, around 1840. In 1824 Fort Brooke was a military post established at the mouth of the Hillsborough River in present-day Tampa. It had as many as 3,000 soldiers and would take part in all three Seminole Indian Wars. The fort was decommissioned by the U.S. Army in 1883.
Armed Occupation Act Granting 160 acres to any head of a family, the Florida Armed Occupation Act of 1842 required a settler’s house to be built in one year, the clearing and growing crops for five years, and defending the homestead.
bedroom, where she collapsed and died. Fifteen-year-old William Brown Bradley was shot on the porch of the log house. An Aug. 4, 1922 Dade City Banner story recounting the raid, reported that Nancy Bradley, the captain’s wife,“…rushed out on the porch, picked up the wounded boy, and carried him into the room and laid him on the bed. He (William) got up, grabbed a rifle, and fired through a crack between the logs, handed the gun to one of his brothers, saying, ‘fight till you die’ and fell to the floor dead.” News of the 15-year-old’s injuries reached as far north as the Macon Weekly Telegraph, which on June 24, 1856 reported: ‘His body had been pierced by two balls.” When Bradley realized the Indians had reached the steps of his front porch, he heard his wife yell:“They are coming in!” What happened next was reported as far east as the Palatka Democrat, which published a May 22, 1856 account: “Captain Bradley, who was prostrated on his bed with sickness, arose and returned a fire on the Indians with two or three guns which he had in his house, which caused them to withdraw,” according to the Palatka Democrat report.
The Banner’s 1922 article indicated that “one of the boys shot at two Indians who were trying to hide behind a tree and afterwards more blood was found there than anywhere else.” Bradley counted at least 15 Indians attacking his log cabin. The Palatka Democrat reported:“Captain Bradley was of the opinion that the Indians were about his house all night.” Because he was a known Indian fighter, there are several historical sources that describe the Bradley attack as an act of revenge. During the Second Seminole War (18351842), a major strategist and leader for the Indians was Thlocko Tustenuggee— or better known as “Tiger Tail” to the white man. And, it was Captain Bradley who had tracked down and killed Nethlockemathlar, the older brother of Tiger Tail. Reaching the Bradley homestead the next day from Fort Brooke, Capt.Thomas C. Ellis and a group of men went into the surrounding woods to hunt for the Seminoles. “The camp of the redskins was found in the big cypress swamp and nearby the grave of the Indian killed by Captain Bradley,” according to the Dade City Banner. As the Bradley attack produced more sightings and fears of the Indians, Gen. Jesse Carter at Fort Brooke received a letter from a citizen’s committee dated May 31, 1856. It said, in part: “… we therefore most respectfully ask that you will, at the earliest practicable moment, send to our relief a force sufficient to protect us from the cruel barbarities of this insidious foe…” With the frontier on alert, Bradley and his wife laid to rest their son and daughter
HARPER’S WEEKLY, JUNE 12, 1858
After meeting with U.S. President Millard Fillmore at the White House, Seminole Chief Billy Bowlegs initially agreed to surrender. The U.S. government later offered Bowlegs $10,000 to relocate to the Indian Territory in present-day Oklahoma. Bowlegs had led his warriors on sporadic attacks, which may have included the Bradley Massacre.
in unmarked graves. This was done to prevent the Indians from returning and desecrating the burials. The family would learn later that the Indian war party was pursued as far south as Fort Mead “and the entire band either killed or captured,” according to one newspaper account. Called “The Bradley Massacre” by a historical maker erected by Pasco County in 1979, the killings that night 160 years ago was one of several events that ultimately forced Chief Billy Bowlegs and the last of some 100 Seminole warriors to leave Florida at the end of the Third Seminole War in 1858. Lose Weight And Live Longer Special to The Laker / Lutz News
When people come to Medi-Weightloss in Lutz for help losing weight, many are surprised by the clinic’s focus on health. “Losing weight is all about your health. It’s the most important reason to lose weight,” said Gerri Willett, owner and manager of the clinic on SR 54 and Oak Grove Boulevard. “For every 10 pounds someone loses, it increases their life by one-and-a-half years.” That translates into living an additional five years for the average Medi-Weightloss patient, who typically loses 35 pounds while on the program. “We tell our patients to forget about losing weight because of their appearance. We want them to think first about losing weight to improve their health,” said Gerri. The Lutz MediWeightloss clinic, which is owned by Gerri, her husband Tom, and Mark and Ronda Willett, is celebrating its 10th year. Their clinic has helped hundreds of area people regain their health by losing weight with MediWeightloss’ proven threestep program: “We understand that losing weight is very difficult — perhaps one of the most difficult things one can do,” said Gerri. “We’re here to guide our patients through all three phases of weight loss, and then continue supporting them so they don’t gain their weight back.” When meeting the staff at MediWeightloss, the first thing many people notice is their empathy and sincere support. The medical doctors, who focus on weight loss, and their health care assistants
view being overweight as a medical problem that can be just as serious as diabetes and other chronic conditions. “People who have never been overweight don’t understand that losing weight is very difficult, and often mistakenly believe it’s a lack of discipline,” said Gerri. “Our staff truly understands the challenges of losing weight, because most of them were our patients before they became employees.” Studies show that obese people are more impulsive, are procrastinators and falsely believe they can lose weight by themselves, Gerri said. “So many people come to us caught up in a negative circle, where they lose a few pounds, only to gain it back because they eat out of stress or frustration,” said Gerri. Most of the patients at Medi-Weightloss are women, and most have between 30 and 50 lbs. to lose. But, many men also are clients and do very well on the program. “Anyone who does our program correctly, will lose weight,” said Gerri, who said most clients lose their weight in three to four months. “Patients usually see a weight loss of 8 to 10 pounds in the first week, and then 2 to 3 pounds a week after that. It really does work!” As a patient’s body adjusts to their new weight, it becomes healthier, and the person feels the best they have in years with more energy, and fewer aches and pains. “The longer a patient maintains their goal weight, the easier it gets to keep it off,” said Gerri. “If our program didn’t work, we would not still be in operation 10 years after we opened our Lutz clinic.”

The program aims to provide specialized training to help visually impaired and blind teens prepare for living independently as adults, higher education, and employments. Many of these teens drop out of school and find employment for less pay than their peers, with or without a disability. The program provides year-round training for youths ages 14 to 22. Each participant is individually evaluated, and a plan is developed to focus on their unique needs and goals. Clients participate in group-based activities and training one day a week after school, one Saturday a month, and on teacher planning days. There also is an intensive five-week summer program. Gran Fondo cycles into Pasco County By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com
For the fourth year in a row, cyclists from all across the nation will make the trek to Pasco County to ride in the Gran Fondo Florida racing event on March 26. The race begins — and ends — in downtown San Antonio. It is one of eight events across the country as part of the Gran Fondo National Championship Series. The cycling route is 100 miles, but there are also 35-mile and 55-mile routes for less avid riders. While much of Florida is synonymous with flat roads, the bike race travels along Pasco County’s rural rolling hills, with cyclists riding by horse farms and clear springs throughout the scenic route. The 100-mile course has nearly 3,000 feet of cumulative elevation gain, according to Reuben Kline, president and race director of the Gran Fondo National Championship Series. “The rolling back roads are beautiful, but also very challenging,” Kline said.“The area around Pasco County and even up into Hernando County — it offers amazing riding for any perspective. It’s a great area to ride— a lot of back roads, low traffic.” The gran fondo format differs from other bike races, because it’s not a “start to finish” race. Instead, there are timed segments throughout the courses, which are used to calculate a rider’s competitive time.
In the 100-mile course, for example, there might be a chip-timed session from mile 17 to mile 20, and again from mile 42 to mile 47. “It’s really a unique style of race. The Gran Fondo is really becoming popular,” said Ed Caum, tourism director for Pasco County. “You casually ride for part of it, and then when you hit your sections where you’re timed, then that’s where you do your sprint. Then, you’re back down to cycling through beautiful Pasco countryside until you get to your next timed section.” Kline noted the gran fondo format is “less contentious” than other road races, because it eliminates the “peloton dependency,” where cyclists ride in a tight group, drafting off one another to conserve energy. “Historically, bicycling hasn’t been a very user-friendly discipline when it comes to a competitive environment because of the need to draft in a large group of people. The atmosphere is often contentious because of the dynamics of it, and because of the safety, or lack of safety involved,” Kline explained. “There’s not a lot of closeness among competitors, because you’re always like ‘I’m going to have to use you to win.’ “What we saw with this gran fondo format was an opportunity to make something that people could both enjoy and (also) be competitive,” he said. According to Kline, the gran fondo-racing format has only been around in the United States for “no more than six or seven years.” “It’s a new discipline, and a lot of people

don’t understand,‘what is a gran fondo and how does it work?’” Gran fondo events, which originated in Italy, provide a cycling outlet for everyone from beginners to elite cyclists, he said. “It’s very much like a marathon. How many people enter a marathon thinking they’re going to win? Not many, but some do,” the race director said.“The atmosphere is such that those people are showing up to compete, because it inspires the other people to compete. People might enter to either finish the race, finish atop their age group or finish at the top of the overall standings. “It does provide an opportunity to be

competitive, and not only competitive with a whole bunch of people, but also with their friends and teammates.” Last year, the race drew 297 riders — a 70 percent increase from 2014, and a 140 percent from 2013 — reports show. Additionally, only 26 of those riders lived in Pasco County, with the majority coming from all across Florida. There were also participants from a dozen other states — Alabama, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. A 2015 post-event report shows an economic impact of $44, 878, based on the total number of room nights booked by participants and spectators. “They come from across North America, and then you’ll have some people that are down here—snowbirds and all— that ride the (gran fondo) races...throughout the circuit,” Pasco County’s tourism director said. “Some people travel specifically to participate in the event. “As people come here and ride, they’ll want to come back, because it’s so beautiful out there in San Antonio and St. Joseph, and Dade City.” Kline has been pleased with the event’s “very sizable growth” since it’s inception, and plans to bring it back to Pasco County. “We intend to continue holding the event in Pasco County. We’ve enjoyed working with the representatives in Pasco County,” he said.
“It’s kind of a gift to the community from the hospital, to encourage this important celebration of the year,” he said. One of the highlights is the release of a dove, a symbol of the Holy Spirit, Higgins said. “That’s a great symbol of Christ’s resurrection, and new life within us, as well,” he explained. The service typically draws about 1,500 people, he said. Harmeson, who will be the main speaker at the sunrise service, said he will be focusing on the resurrection of Christ and “how we react, moving forward with the knowledge Christ died for us.” Scores of churches of various Christian denominations also are planning special services leading up to Easter and on Easter Sunday, and we have some of those services in our What’s Happening section this week. Many churches also have information about the themes and times for their services posted on their websites.

Local soccer player signs with Division 1 team By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com
Mikey Connell — the son of a former local soccer legend — has signed a national letter of intent with the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. The Steinbrenner High standout is the son of former Tampa Bay Rowdies star Mike Connell. The 6-foot-1 midfielder will be coached at the Division I college by Derek Marinatos, who’s in his sixth year as UNF’s head coach. Connell signed his national letter of intent with UNF on Feb. 3, two weeks after ending his high school soccer career. While Connell had a few other college offers, he decided on UNF after meeting with the coaching staff and visiting the campus. The three-time All-County selection is relieved to have the recruiting process behind him. “It was a very stressful process,” Mikey said,“because you’re always thinking about where you are. If a school doesn’t offer you, you’re thinking,‘Oh no, I’m running out of time; signing day is coming up.’ Once I committed, it was easy going into the (soccer) showcases and just focusing on playing, and not worry about attracting coaches to my style of play.” He will be joining a team which has finished over .500 for three straight seasons. The university became an even more attractive option for Connell after one of the team’s players, midfielder Alex Morrell (of

Lakeland), was drafted 22nd overall in the 2016 MLS (Major League Soccer) SuperDraft. “That was a big factor in my decision,” said Connell, who hopes to play professional soccer after he finishes college.“The fact they can produce those type of players
gives me an opportunity to prove myself on that big stage.” His father noted it was important to “put (Mikey) in the hands of someone that will take him to the next level.” “Certainly, the coaching staff there understands the challenge of preparing players and delivering players to the professional ranks, which was very important,” Mike said. This past season, Connell was one of the most productive players in Hillsborough County, scoring 26 goals and dishing out 19 assists. “While he’s been a very, very good high school player, everything resets and now (he’s) going to go and have to do it again,” Connell’s father said about playing Division I soccer.“The fact that he has the opportunity to improve himself at this next level is all you ask for. Now, it’s up to him to go and understand the challenge.” Throughout his illustrious high school career, Connell said he’s become more confident in his abilities, which is highlighted by his attacking style of play, and his penchant for facilitating scoring opportunities for teammates. “I feel like I see things that most players do not see,” said Connell, who helped guide Steinbrenner to a district championship in 2014 and a regional championship in 2013. “I’m left-footed, so that’s a unique characteristic. I can take people on with the ball, I can score goals, and I can assist. “I’ve really tried to hone my game into an all-around kind of player over the past few years.” His father, a 10-year veteran of the Tampa
Bay Rowdies, agrees with that assessment. “He’s very confident receiving the ball and holding the ball when he has it. He doesn’t panic under pressure,” Mike explained.“His strongest asset is his vision of the game, the creative side of the game.” Additionally, Mike said his son has become a “better leader of his teammates” since he started playing for Steinbrenner. “He’s seeing the game on a bigger scale. ...Just maturing with the game and the expectations of a bigger, stronger, more physical game,” Mike said. Mike believes his son has the talent to play professionally, but adds there’s “still a lot of development to come.” “There’s the right of passage to ‘fight the fight’ against everyone out there that may have that (professional) ambition,” Mike said.“Certainly, had he grown up in the soccer environments of South Africa or Europe, he would be further along.” In addition to playing for Steinbrenner, Connell also plays for the Tampa Rangers, a club soccer team directed by his father. The opportunity to be instructed by someone who’s played professional soccer for over a decade has been a key to Connell’s development. “He’s the biggest impact on my life, coaching wise,” Connell said about his father.“He’s been my main coach since I was 11 when I was on his club team, and he’s been coaching me on my own whenever I started walking. “He’s definitely been the biggest influence in my life on the game of soccer,” he said.
Sunlake cheerleader, coach receive county honors By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com
Sunlake High School’s competitive cheerleading season may be over, but the awards are tumbling in. Senior cheerleader Amanda Slozer and head coach Pennye Garcia recently received the Sunshine Athletic Conference’s (SAC) Cheerleader of the Year and Coach of the Year for the East Pasco division, respectively. Slozer, 18, said she was “shocked” when she found out she was being awarded for her individual performance. “I just wasn’t expecting it,” she said, humbly. However, her coach wasn’t the least bit surprised that Slozer, one of the team’s captains, was recognized — due to the cheerleader’s diverse skillset. “Stunting—she’s as strong as anything; I can always put her anywhere,” Garcia said. “Whenever I needed to have the most strength in (a routine), that’s where she would go.” Slozer had the perfect combination of skill and character needed for a team to be successful, added Garcia, who has been a cheerleader coach for 13 years, the longeststanding in Pasco County, “When you have (a cheerleader) that has the quality that you want in a kid and the skill level, it’s great,” said Garcia, who is fascinated by Slozer’s tumbling ability.“She’s very responsible, dependable, caring; just a great individual.” Slozer, who’s been cheering since she was 7 years old, realizes a lot of people don’t understand the challenges and sacrifices of being a competitive cheerleader — especially when it comes to being a part of a Garcia-coached team. “I feel like a lot of people just think we stand on the track at football games…but

Garcia, who helped guide Sunlake to a state title in the 2013-2014 season, was hoping for a first or second place finish at this year’s state championships, knowing the squad’s high ceiling going into the season. “This team had a little bit more talent than my state (title) team. They got some skills a lot quicker,” said Garcia, who also won Pasco County Coach of the Year in 2014. “This team was a lot more laid back than my state team. They were not, as a whole, as ambitious until the last minute, where it has

to be ambitious from the get-go,” Garcia said. As one of the premier cheerleading coaches in the area, Garcia has maintained a successful track record at Sunlake — three consecutive state appearances — by instilling discipline, consistency and purpose, and maintaining the quality of cheerleaders she selects for her varsity squad. “I have to stick to my guns and be tough,” the head coach said.“If I would not be tough like I am, it would be very easy for the kids to lay back and want everything, but not want to work for it. I can’t function like that.” Slozer has witnessed the grind firsthand, whether it’s attending 6 a.m. practices or participating in countless post-practice reps. “She is tough, but she’s the best thing that’s ever happened to this program, I feel like,” Slozer said about Coach Garcia. “She cares a lot about it, so that helps.” “I feel like over the past three years we’ve had different rivals every year, because the teams are all different every time, but we’ve stayed pretty consistent,” she said. To perform a seamless 2 ½-minute routine, which consists of standing and running tumbling, transitions and stunting, Garcia ensures her squad is fully equipped to earn high scores in competitions. “I practice them until it’s ready,” Garcia said, pointing out that stunting is the most important part of a routine.“If it’s not ready, I will have them do whatever we need to do until I feel like it’s done.” While the season is over, Garcia’s mind is focused on the program’s next step, whether it’s organizing clinics and camps, or designing future pyramids and routines. Presley Knouse, 9, has the school’s initials painted on her cheek by school art teacher, Kellie Silvey.
Students have a field day at Sanders By Kathy Steele ksteele@lakerlutznews.com
anders Memorial Elementary School started spring break early with a day of fun in the sun. More than 700 students spent their day at school playing games, dancing, relay racing, getting their faces painted and slurping down snow cones. The annual Field Day on March 18 was the last school day before the weeklong spring break started for public schools in Pasco County. Presley Knouse, 9, got her cheek painted with the letters of her school, SMES. Then, she headed off for a round of tinikling, a dance originated in the Philippines. Classmates tapped and moved two poles in and out, as Knouse stepped over or in between the poles. On the basketball court, students tested their skills with an outsized jenga game or zoomed handmade paper planes through the air. A boom box energized dancers with familiar tunes, old
S
and new. From “Hey Macarena” to “Do the Hokey Pokey,” students got into the rhythm. On the school’s field, students tested their strength and skills at tug o’ war, relay races, soccer kicks, or football and baseball tosses. About 70 volunteers, and another dozen or so teachers and staff members, participated. Most volunteers were parents, but about eight employees from the Nike store at Tampa Premium Outlets also helped. Standing in line, students hopped with excitement as they waited a turn at kicking the soccer ball into a net. Riya Mendenhall, 5, joined in a tug o’ war. “You lose sometimes. You win sometimes,” she said. Sanders Memorial Principal Jason Petry joined in the fun, too. He gave some tips on baseball pitching to 5-year-old Patrick Mize, as the youngster got ready for his wind-up. “It kind of kicks off their spring break,” Petry said. “They’ve worked hard since the beginning of the year. You kind of need a day like this to celebrate.”
Wearing a painted-on robotic soccer ball, Nathan Wagner, 10, is space-ready to climb to the top of the inflatable Space Shuttle and slide down its chute.
Trevor Lucas, 6, and Jordan Richardson, 5, pour on the steam, as they face off with another kindergarten class during the tug o’ war Field Day event.
The heart painted on Alina McCormack’s face matches her lips, stained from sipping her Icee drink.
Chase Martin, 8, takes a rest as he waits for the next event.
Riley Briggs, 5, bottom left, and Jayda Hammersly, 6, bottom right, found out ‘you can’t win them all’ even in kindergarten tug o’ war.
Landon Lipovetsky, 5, keeps his eye on the soccer ball as he kicks a goal during the soccer kick competition at Field Day.
Chloe Choo, 7, gets the jump on the tinikling event, as she goes airborne above plastic poles moving from side to side.
