Instead of going to their bank, law office, hospital or real estate company — or dozens of other businesses — these men and women showed up at Hungry Harry’s Family Bar-B-Que on a recent sunny and clear Wednesday morning. They were there to honor Harry Wright and his son-in-law, Chad Hudson, for their restaurant’s longstanding contributions to community life in Land O’ Lakes. Members of the Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce’s community affairs committee presented a sign declaring Hungry Harry’s as “The Heart of Pasco.” “Hungry Harry’s has been actively involved in the community and has given back to the community in countless ways,” Mary Lynn Gorsline said, as she read from a letter explaining why the restaurant was singled out for the honor. Sandy Graves, also on the committee, presented a plaque to Wright and Hudson. After the formalities, those attending huddled around Wright and Hudson for a group photo, and then the two men posed with individuals and groups who wanted a picture to mark the occasion. Wright said the recognition wasn’t necessary, but he was obviously pleased. “Just being part of the community is enough acknowledgement for me.To have this many business people acknowledge me, is really good,”Wright said. He’s also happy that his son-in-law, who runs the operations now, has kept up the restaurant’s tradition of giving back to the community. Hungry Harry’s, at 3116 Land O’ Lakes Blvd., has a long history in Land O’ Lakes. When the restaurant opened, 33 years ago, it was a very lean operation. Just Wright, his wife, Sherry, and one employee handled all of the chores. Over time, Hungry Harry’s has become a mainstay at charitable events in the community. When volunteers for Coastal Cleanup

finish cleaning up, for instance, they’re rewarded with a meal supplied by Hungry Harry’s.That tradition dates more than 20 years. Wright estimates the restaurant has been involved in 5,000 fundraisers. At the 30-year mark Hungry Harry’s had given away about 250,000 meals, he said. Like most businesses, Hungry Harry’s has had its successes and setbacks. At one point, when a portion of the restaurant’s property was taken by eminent domain to widen U.S. 41 — also known as Land O’ Lakes Boulevard — Hungry Harry’s was closed for eight months. At another point,Wright was knocked out of commission by a heart attack. When the recession hit, it wiped out nearly all of the restaurant’s commercial
catering and dealt a serious blow to its walk-in trade,Wright said. But, the family has stuck together, and through hard work, it has weathered the storms,Wright said. It now has a thriving catering service for weddings, which Hudson developed, which catered more than 400 weddings last year, Wright said. Opening a barbecue restaurant was never part of a grand plan,Wright said. “I was running the world’s largest service center and tire store in Tampa. My boss wouldn’t pay me my $11,800 bonus,” he said. So, he turned in his two-week notice. He and Sherry had five kids at the time. “She was really concerned and upset.

from Texas A & M University. He is a retired U.S. Air Force colonel and also commanded three Air National Guard units. His work experience includes engineering positions Dan Biles in the private as well as public sector in Texas and Washington State. He was hired in 2014 as the first deputy county manager of Jefferson County, Alabama, which was newly formed. Previously, he worked for four years in Corpus Christi, Texas, as director of engineering services and executive director of public works. He also worked for private engineering companies in Washington State including Maverick Engineering Inc., and SBI Developing LLC. As Jefferson County’s deputy county manager, Biles led the County Infrastructure Group, which included environmental services, roads and transportation, general services, land planning, inspection services and stormwater. According to his resume, he developed a litter collection program that removed more than 100 tons of litter in its first four months.

Pasco County commissioners signed off on a contract to hire Dan Biles as the next Pasco County administrator, with an annual salary of $220,000. County commissioners agreed to hire him on March 14, when he competed against four other candidates at a special public meeting in New Port Richey. On March 28, commissioners made Biles’ hiring official by approving his contract. Biles is scheduled to begin his new duties on May 1. However, his three-year contract also requires that he spend a few days in Pasco County before then, to take part in budget discussions with county staff for fiscal year 2018. Biles is leaving his job as deputy county manager in Jefferson County, Alabama, to step into a position being vacated by Pasco County Administrator Michele Baker. Baker opted to retire after four years, and not seek a contract renewal. There will be some overlap of time between Baker’s departure and Biles’ arrival. Baker’s contract ends in mid-July. “I think we’re extremely fortunate to
have such a strong county administrator coming here,” said Pasco County Commission Chairman Mike Moore.“He is very impressive. He’s going to help us take Pasco to new heights.” In addition to his annual salary, Biles’ contract includes benefits for a total package of about $278,000. The county will pay $10,000 in moving expenses and up to $2,000 for temporary housing. Biles also will receive an automobile allowance of $450 a month, term life insurance of $100,000, and retirement benefits. Pasco County Commissioner Ron Oakley wants the county to schedule meet-andgreets with Biles, on the east and west sides of the county. When county commissioners interviewed potential candidates, they anticipated two days of interviews. But, Biles scored so well on the first day, they opted to immediately offer him the job. “I think he’s the right fit for us,” said Pasco County Commissioner Kathryn Starkey. Biles holds two civil engineering degrees

Passover begins April 10 The holiday of Pesach, or Passover, is an eight-day festival celebrated in the early spring, from the 15th through the 22nd of the Hebrew month of Nissan. This year, it runs from April 10 to April 18. It commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. Following the rituals of Passover allows the Jewish community to relive and experience the freedom of their ancestors. Observances: Passover is divided into two parts. The first two days, April 10 and April 11, and the last two days,April 17 and April 18, are full-fledged holidays. Candles are lit at night and feasts (Seders) are enjoyed the first two days. The middle four days are referred to as chol hamoed, or semifestive “intermediate days.” Seders: The highlight of Passover is the Seder, which is observed on each of the first two nights of the holiday. The Seder is a 15step, family-oriented tradition and ritual-packed feast.
THE FOCAL POINTS OF THE SEDER INCLUDE: • Eating matzah, or unleavened bread • Eating bitter herbs to commemorate the bitter slavery endured by the Israelites • Drinking four cups of wine or grape juice to celebrate the newfound freedom • The recitation of the Haggadah, a liturgy that describes the story of the Exodus from Egypt. The Haggadah is the fulfillment of the biblical obligation to recount the story of the Exodus on the night of Passover.
SYMBOLIC SEDER FOODS:

• Some traditional Ashkenazi Passover dishes include gefilte fish, matzah ball soup, brisket, tzimmis (sweet carrot and fruit dish), and macaroons and sponge cake (made from matzah meal) for dessert. Expanded Menu for Passover: In November 2015, the Conservative Jewish movement’s Committee on Jewish Law and Standards issued a ruling allowing the consumption of kitniyot (legumes) during Passover. For thousands of years,Ashkenazi Jews have followed the tradition of not eating kitniyot on Passover. (The custom was not adopted by most Sephardi Jews.) Kitniyot includes beans, corn, rice, millet, peas, soybeans, peanuts, sesame seeds, poppy seeds, mustard and sometimes garlic. —Compiled by Kevin Weiss

The season of summer camps is just around the corner. That means parents are facing a daunting task of sifting through dozens of options to settle on the summer camps that work best for them and their children. This year, Family-Friendly Tampa Bay is launching its first Family-Friendly Camp Expo on April 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free event will be at Florida Hospital Center Ice, at 3173 Cypress Ridge Blvd., in Wesley Chapel. The complex is visible from Interstate 75, at the interchange for State Road 56, east of the Tampa Premium Outlets. Families can meet one-on-one with Tampa Bay camp directors and staff members. Event-goers will have the chance to review a range of choices, including sports camps, day camps, STEM camps, special needs/autism camps, art camps, performing arts and academic camps. “I realized there wasn’t anything like this in Pasco,” said Miriam Cook, a Pasco County parent who founded Family-Friendly Tampa Bay in 2014. The website, at FamilyFriendlyTampaBay.com, provides current information on affordable events, discount coupons and special deals for area families. The first 250 families at the expo will receive goody bags. Attendees also will get a printed list of available summer camps. This list will include

expo participants, as well as summer camps that are unable to send staff members to the expo, Cook said. The Easter Bunny also will hop through the expo, giving away candy and posing for free pictures. Families get the added bonus of exploring the new Florida Hospital Center Ice. The complex, which opened in January, is the largest hockey complex in the southeast. Expo attendees will receive a “Buy One Get One” free skate offer from Florida Hospital Center Ice. In addition, there will be educational workshops, a parent-pamper section, health and wellness resources, live entertainment, a kids’ fun zone, and mini-sports clinics. Families can also enter to win free weeks of camp when they register online. The hunt for summer camps is a yearly ritual that isn’t easy to decipher, Cook said.“It’s so hard. There’s so many.” But, when parents can meet with the people who run the camps and ask questions, they can find the right fit for their children and their budgets, Cook said.

The amazing attitude of my sister, Karen By Diane Kortus Publisher
M
y younger sister, Karen, and I are three years apart. We typically see each other just two or three times a year, because Karen lives in my home state of Minnesota and I live in Florida — more than 1,300 miles away. While there’s a great distance between us, Karen and I have always been close. We share many common interests — traveling, gardening, dogs, cooking, outdoor activities, history and our faith. We have often talked of spending more time together when we retire. Just a few years ago, we began seeing more of each other after Karen and her husband, John, starting wintering outside Thomasville, Georgia. They wanted to get away from Minnesota’s snow and cold, and they needed a warm climate where they could train their dogs to compete in AKC Retriever Hunt Tests. Thomasville, which is just north of Tallahassee, is a four-hour drive from my home in Land O’ Lakes — making it close enough for weekend visits. The rest of the year, Karen is back in Minnesota. She has a fulfilling and happy life there with John, their sons, three grandchildren and, of course, their beautiful dogs. As we all know, though, unexpected things can happen that turn your life upside down. In my sister’s case, that happened three years ago when she began having trouble with her vision and spatial awareness. When she was dressing, for example, she often put her tops on backwards. When she drove, she found it increasingly difficult to stay inside the proper lane and would sometimes drift onto the shoulder. Karen assumed that a change in her vision was causing the problems. So, she had her eyes examined and bought the best pair of lenses available.
The new glasses didn’t help, and Karen’s vision problems persisted. So, she went to another eye doctor for a second opinion. The second optometrist told her the new glasses were right on the mark, and couldn't explain why she was still having trouble with her sight. Karen’s visual spatial and perception problems grew worse, and they beCOURTESY OF DIANE KORTUS came apparent to Diane Kortus, left, and her sister, Karen, during a kayaking trip at a her husband and spring close to Tallahassee. other family members. much longer she has to live. Since her diagnosis, John and Karen have done many things that they had planned to do someday. But now, they do these things today. It is the rest of the family that worries and mourns about what’s ahead for Karen and John. We marvel at how positive this couple of 33 years is about their future, and admire their attitude of “why wait — let's do it today.” It’s a philosophy we all should adopt — whether it’s estate planning and completing your will, buying new carpet and furniture, traveling to someplace you’ve always wanted to visit or reading Moby Dick. It’s an attitude of living every day as if it was your last, and making sure the people you care about know how much you love them. When I asked Karen about writing this column, she wanted to make sure I reported that PCA often goes undiagnosed for years, because many eye doctors are not aware of the disease. Most people diagnosed with PCA first go to their optometrist because they believe they needed stronger glasses. When new glasses or contacts don’t eliminate their visual problems, they often visit other eye doctors — who often are unfamiliar with the symptoms of PCA. If a PCA patient sees a neurologist sooner, it can be diagnosed and treated earlier, with the potential of slowing down the disease, and saving themselves and their family years of stress and anxiety. So, next time you see your eye doctor, please ask him or her if he or she is aware of PCA, and if not, to please research the disease to understand how to respond if a patient complains about problems with driving, penmanship and spatial awareness. Do this for yourself and those you care about. And, do it for me, and my sister, Karen.

OPEN DAILY 11AM - 6PM

In the mornings, the parking lot is filled with cars whose owners are enjoying the 18-hole public golf course that opened in 1960. The rural par70 course follows the contours of the rolling hills and is shaded by ancient oak trees. At lunchtime, you’ll find university faculty and staff enjo oyying one of the daily specials which are posted on a chalkboard at the entrance. The house salads, soups, sandwiches and burgers are consistently good, but the menu shines when it comes to the specials. A real crowd pleaser is the half rack of Jack Daniel’s barbeque baby back ribs with potato salad, baked beans, gouda macaroni and cheese, or corn on the cob for $8. Multiple big screen televisions attract sports fans in the evenings, and on weekend nights the bar area is crowded with students and locals alike. Don’t be surprised when owner Ben Bates stops by your table to ask how you’re enjoying your meal. Geographicallyy,, the restaurant is situated in the To Town of St. Leo which has a historryy dating back 125 years and is closely linked to the City of San Antonio. According to Wi William G. Daayyton’s “A “A Short Historryy of the San Antonio Area” (2000), the town was originally part of the 50,000 acres given to Edmund Dunne, former Chief Justice of the Arizona Te Territorryy byy land baron Hamilton Disston in exchange for legal serrvvices. Named after Po Pope Saint Leo the Great, the To Town of St. Leo began with the formation of two Benedictine communities in 1889, Holy Name Priorryy and Saint Leo Abbey on Dunne’s former homestead.Vi Visitors todaayy can tour the Holy Name Monasterryy, the St. Leo Abbey and Saint Leo University and nyy of the original buildings from the town’s earliest daayys. view man While you’re in the area, be sure to visit the City of San Antonio where nyy of Pa Padua Catholic Church, historic buildings you’ll find St. Anthon converted to retail shops, and a quaint but thriving community.

“She said,‘Well, what are you gonna do?’” Wright had an idea. He had been working near a barbecue joint that enjoyed an excellent reputation. Wright thought he could do better. “I said,‘Honey, if this guy around the corner can be the best in Tampa Bay, I can cook barbecue better than that. I cooked barbecue for our wedding.’ “She said, ‘You stupid fool. I’ve never worked in a restaurant, and we don’t have any money.’ “Twenty-four days later, we opened,” Wright said. Now, Wright and his wife are partners with their daughter, Stacey and their son-inlaw, Chad. “My son-in-law is an unreal businessman,”Wright said. Things are far more systematic than they were when Wright ran things. “We had no recipe books, when he came. “He said,‘Starting tomorrow, everything you do for the next year, you’ve got to write it down.’” “I’d tear off box tops, and I’d write down,‘Mashed potatoes for 600.’” Hudson took the recipes and converted them into spread sheets, with step-by-step instructions. At its inception, the restaurant was named Hungry Harry’s Famous Bar-B-Que. “Who decided it was famous?” Wright asked, rhetorically? “I did,” he answered, with a laugh. Now, that the restaurant’s ownership is in the family’s second generation, the company refers to itself as Hungry Harry’s Family Bar-B-Que. Initially, the restaurant operated out of a former barbecue joint called Rib Junction. It had been closed for two years and its lot was choked with weeds. Its dining room had 130 seats and stretched out to what is now the middle of the highway. To help fill those seats, Wright went to church — many churches, actually. He would tell the pastors: “You pick a night that works for me, and I’ll feed every man, woman, (and) child a complete dinner, with everything including dessert, for $2.” The church dinners often would draw 300 to 350 people, and roughly 150 of them would end up at Hungry Harry’s for a meal within a week.

CONTRACT, from page 1A Biles also coordinated road improvement plans in partnership with local cities and state transportation officials. And, he led a customer service improvement initiative in permitting. The Greater Birmingham Home Builders Association praised his efforts, his resume states. Though Baker is slated to end her tenure with the county, Starkey suggested another option. She would like Baker to stay on and
help shepherd the county’s longstanding request for a permit from the U.S.Army Corps of Engineers to extend Ridge Road. The road is a high priority for the county as an eastwest emergency route. Environmental groups are opposed. “No one can speak to this effort as well as our Michele Baker,” said Starkey.“I don’t know what that (job) would look like and if she wants to do that.” Baker didn’t respond, and Moore said discussions on meet-and-greets and Baker’s status should wait until Biles arrival.

Wright said he has always been his own man. “I did what I wanted to do. I fought the county, when I wanted to fight the county. I fought for causes,” he said. The American flag that covers the restaurant’s roof is proof positive of that. “Eight days after 911, the flag was started to be prepped and painted. I was so upset at that time,” he said, and he wanted to do something. “So, we painted it. “Sometime after that, Pasco County came to warn me that I was in violation of the sign code. “I informed them I didn’t want to be warned. I told them I wanted to be cited. They’d have to take me out of here in handcuffs, feet cuffs (ankle cuffs). I had people in the armed forces who said they would sit up on the roof. “So, they (county regulators) decided just to leave it alone,” he said. Wright is a big believer in Land O’ Lakes, and in supporting local businesses. “We have six kids.We had five when we came. The sixth was born almost in the restaurant. “We have 14 grandkids, 11 of them in Land O’ Lakes, so I’m pretty well vested in the community,”Wright said. He appreciates the relationships and friendships he’s formed through the years, with local business owners and local organizations. “I don’t think I had anything but relationships in business when I came here. That was all that kept me in business,”Wright said. While he appreciates the chamber’s recognition, it’s not something he sought after, he said. “I have never been a person who needed to be acknowledged. I got the satisfaction from what we’d done. I’ve never done anything unless I’ve wanted to, and that’s a real freedom,” he said. Now, he’s working on a book he plans to call ‘Everybody knows everything about life, and barbecue.’” His favorite sentence so far is this:“Two days after everybody agrees on religion and politics — two days after that, they’ll agree on barbecue.” In looking back, Wright said, “I don’t think I was a very good businessman. But, that doesn’t seem to bother him. “I probably could have been a whole lot more successful monetarily, but I couldn’t have been a whole lot more satisfied,” Wright said.

Cypress Creek football presents ‘great opportunity’ By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com
In less than three weeks, a new high school football program will take the field in Wesley Chapel. Like other Florida high schools, the Cypress Creek Coyotes are set to begin spring football practices on April 24. But, the circumstances for this team are unique — particularly for new head coach Mike Johnson and prospective athletes. The program faces logistical hurdles because Cypress Creek Middle High, which will pull students from both Wesley Chapel and Wiregrass high schools, is still under construction, off Old Pasco Road. Current freshman and sophomores zoned for the school will be permitted to participate in spring football drills. But, those practices will be at Weightman Middle School, while Cypress Creek’s athletic fields remain under construction. The weight room at the new school — measuring 2,273 square feet — likewise isn’t complete. Football equipment and protective gear hasn’t arrived, either. Also, Johnson is the only paid high school football coach on staff. The six assistant positions have not yet been filled. Cypress Creek Middle High, located 8701 Old Pasco Road, will have nearly 1,500 students in grades six through 11 next year. That means no seniors in its inaugural football season. Still, Cypress Creek’s new football coach sees an “exciting opportunity” for the upstart program, he said. “I think it’s an absolutely great opportunity — walking into something where you get to put your mark on it,” Johnson said. “These kids have every opportunity to do what they want with it; they can make it what they want.” Johnson, currently a physical education teacher at Taylor Elementary, will serve as a graduate enhancement teacher at Cypress Creek during the 2017-2018 school year. An Illinois native, Johnson moved to Florida in 2010. He most recently coached at Stuart Middle School, where the team went undefeated in his lone season. He previously had a two-year stint as an offensive line coach at Wesley Chapel High school, under former head coach Ben Alford;Alford stepped down in 2012 after going 11-19 in

three seasons. During a meet-and-greet at Wesley Chapel High School on March 28, Johnson provided program updates, while fielding football-related questions from parents and players. Johnson’s message was optimistic:“The sky’s the limit,” he said. Throughout the meeting, Johnson outlined pillars for the new team, along with his expectations for football families. Academics, he said, will be a major emphasis. So, too, is winning games and helping players reach “the next level.” “We want to set high standards,” said Johnson, a former defensive back at Division III Eureka College in Illinois.“I’ve got to have students-athletes that want to

work hard every day, and want to come to practice every day.” Moreover, he said the program’s foundation will conform to the “5C’s”— Commitment, Consistency, Courage, Communication and Compassion. “We will definitely develop an atmosphere, that everyone will be proud of,” he said. Regarding offensive and defensive schemes, Johnson was relatively vague, but noted he’ll gear the Coyotes playbook to-
wards the strengths of his eventual roster and coaching staff. “We’ll figure that out when (the players) get out there. You’ve got to be versatile to what you have,” he said. That includes taking suggestions from players, through his “open-door” policy. “I want the kids to be able to come in and talk to me. I don’t want it to be where a player is afraid to come talk to me,” Johnson explained. He added:“I want the kids to have some say in their program, how they want to start it, and how they want to build it, so they’ll be proud of it when they graduate.” One thing he won’t do, however, is “play favorites.” “The whole playing favorites thing is out the window. I’m going to put the best 11 on the field, and we’re going to play football,” he said. Cypress Creek varsity football will be designated for Class 4A for at least its first two years, according to Tim Light, the school’s assistant principal. The team’s 2017 schedule was put together by Matt Wicks, the county’s athletic director, Light said. A “patchwork” slate, it features teams that struggled in 2016 (Gulf and Pasco high schools), along with some perennial powerhouses (Tampa Catholic and Sunlake). In September, the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) passed a new system that bases football postseason berths on a points system in Class A-4A.The new format, beginning this season, is designed to reward teams for winning records and strength of schedule. In the FHSAA’s biggest four classes (5A8A), the district champion still automatically qualifies for regionals, with the remaining 16 spots decided by points. While Cypress Creek Middle High won’t have seniors on its inaugural football team, Johnson said the school will “mold these (younger) kids into the leaders that we want them to be. “It’s just a really good opportunity to get down to very basic stuff and get them to learn that, and not skip over anything,” he said. Another parent meeting is expected prior to the start of spring practice. For more information, visit CCMHS.pasco.k12.fl.us.

PHSC FOUNDATION ESTABLISHES SOFTBALL FUND The Pasco-Hernando State College Foundation has established a softball fund in memory of former student-athlete Brooke Gonzalez, who died after being struck by a car last April. The Brooke Gonzalez Softball Fund, created after an initial donation from her family, will provide resources to support the women’s softball program at PHSC. Gonzalez, who was 19 at the time, was reportedly returning to her apartment when she was struck by a car that drove onto a sidewalk along State Road 52. Gonzalez, of Citra, Florida, was a key member of the 2016 PHSC softball squad, batting .415 with two home runs, 20 RBIs and 13 runs scored. She was also an honors student, set to graduate in May 2016 with a 3.5 GPA. Contributions to the fund may be made through the PHSC Foundation office at PHSC.edu/foundation.

Super Saturday offers a swingin’ good time By Kevin Weiss
kweiss@lakerlutznews.com
I
t might’ve been April Fool’s Day, but this softball event was no joke. It’s called Super Saturday, and it’s an annual fundraiser for Lutz Softball, a recreational fast-pitch league for girls ages 5 through 18. On April 1, several hundred softball families gathered to cheer on more than 20 teams, soaking in the daylong festivities at the Oscar Cooler Youth Sports Complex. Besides a full slate of softball matchups, there was plenty to keep attendees amused, from family friendly games and activities, to numerous vendors and countless raffles. “This is probably the biggest Super Saturday we’ve ever held,” said Mike Cook, president of Lutz Softball Inc. “Every year, it’s gotten bigger and bigger and bigger,” added event coordinator Jennifer Bommarito.“This is quite a bit bigger than it started out to be.” Held each spring, Super Saturday is one of the league’s two major fundraisers. The other is Fall Festival, in October. Amid softball rivalries and competition, Super Saturday gives young athletes a chance to unwind. “This is actually like a fun day for them,” Bommarito said,“where they actually get to goof all a little bit...and not have to be so serious.” Mike Bosworth, who has coached in the league since 2013, said the annual shindig also helps foster positive interactions among families. “People are...competitive with one another, and when you do an event like this, it gets you to know other people, and it softens those relationships on the field,” he explained. Other parents agreed. “I think it brings us closer,” said parentcoach Rainey Rosenberger. “It’s just fun to get families together from the community,” parent Natalie Brown added. Another parent, Maggie Mixon, believes the event has nearly become a Lutz tradition. “It’s phenomenal — just to see the community come together, in the spirit of collaboration,” she said.“It’s just a good, oldfashioned, small-town gathering.” Among the afternoon’s top highlights was the parents’ tournament — and it’s unlike any other. A 16-inch blooper ball was used, bases were run in reverse, fathers batted with their non-dominant hand, and kids served as coaches. “It’s fun and confusing — everything’s backwards,” Rosenberger said, smiling. The sports complex’s ballyhooed concession stand was another draw. From biscuits and gravy during early morning games, to mushroom Swiss burgers and buffalo chicken wraps, there’s never a

shortage of tasty grub offerings. Bosworth, whose wife,Alissa, is the concessions manager, said parents from other youth leagues — Brandon, Carrollwood, Wesley Chapel —can’t say enough about the ballpark’s spreads. “The parents are always like, ‘You guys have got the best concession stand we’ve ever seen, anywhere,’” Bosworth said. Super Saturday, meanwhile, couldn’t have come at a better Madelyn Shepherd, 13, left, is not looking into a mirror, but rather at her identical twin, Madesyn Shepherd, after the two played on the team called the Diamonds. According to their mom, Kimberly Shepherd, the two sometimes do not see eye-to-eye on how they tried to make a play.
This dog belongs to Mackenzie Pavloff, of Lutz. The service dog, named Koda Bear, is a 5year-old Pitbull-mix, who seems to like the sounds of the softball games at Oscar Cooler Youth Sports Complex. The pet’s owner said she played softball at the complex years ago.

time for the softball organization. On March 8, two suspects burglarized the Oscar Cooler Sports Complex during early morning hours, causing losses in excess of $5,000. “That (robbery) threw us for a loop tremendously,” Mike Cook said. In wake of the incident, the league has received “overwhelming” community support, with donations from the likes of Home Depot,Walgreens, Lowe’s and Ford. Over $1,920 has also been raised, via a GoFundMe page. Lutz Softball, formerly known as the Lutz Leaguerettes, also has seen quite a transition since January 2016, when the organization
announced it was offering a recreational fast-pitch league for the first time in its 37year history. Just six months later, its slow-pitch leagues were discontinued because of dwindling registration and an overwhelming preference for fast-pitch. The fast-pitch league now claims to have about 200 participants, the highest figure in several years. Lutz Softball Inc., is a PONY (Protect Our Nation’s Youth) Softball affiliate.
Bryan Bounds, of Gainesville, watches softball action with friend, Charlene Ierna, of Lutz. Ierna’s 15-year-old daughter, Emma Ierna, plays on the softball team called the Rebels. Ierna is also the team’s sponsor.
