Using hi-tech to report crimes

By Kevin Weiss

Reporting a variety of crimes is getting easier for Pasco County residents through a new online reporting tool being used by the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office recently upgraded the capabilities of its citizen online police reporting system to accept reports on a these

types of incidents: • Petit theft (less than $300) • Petit theft bicycle (less than $300) • Grand theft bicycle ($300 or more) • Lost property • Littering/illegal dumping • Harassing phone calls • Phone scam (without monetary loss) The improved system will allow citizens to generate reports for these types of crimes

at their own convenience, without having to wait for a deputy to arrive on scene. Once they are reported, the incidents are investigated, and the sheriff’s office will determine the appropriate action to take and will execute it. Reports can be filed online at PascoSheriff.com. See CRIME, page 13A

Commercial kitchen incubator to open in East Pasco By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

An incubator commercial kitchen is expected to begin operating in September at 15029 14th St., in Dade City. The initiative is the result of a partnership between the Pasco Extension Office, which is part of the University of Florida Institute for Food and Agricultural Sciences, Pasco County and the Pasco County Economic Development Council Inc., with assistance from Welbilt. Welbilt, a global manufacturer of commercial restaurant equipment, has provided equipment for the kitchen. It contributed a six-burner range, a singledoor refrigerator, a single-door freezer, an under-the-counter ice machine, shelving, and stainless steel work tables. “They have been working with us, very closely, as an excellent partner, and we do appreciate that donation of equipment from them,” Dr. Whiney C. Elmore, director of the Pasco County Extension Office, told members of the Pasco County Commission at a meeting last month. “They’ve worked closely with us, with facilities from Pasco County, to retrofit an older commercial kitchen space in that building, which has been actually fantastic,” Elmore added. The new kitchen “is going to open up a lot of opportunities for us and the community,” Elmore added. It will be operating out of the One Stop Shop, located within the Stallings Building in East Pasco. Dan Mitchell, program manager for Pasco EDC’s SMARTstart Incubator Program, said the updated commercial kitchen will be used for community classSee KITCHEN, page 13A

Panel sheds light on youth drug use in Pasco By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

Speaking before a roomful of adults, a panel of teens offered their insights and observations about drug use among youths in Pasco County. Marijuana use appears to be the biggest drug-related issue among youth across Pasco County, said the panelists, who are members of Safe Teens Against Drugs (STAND). They said kids are increasingly turning to marijuana as a way to escape their personal problems. “They’re not happy, they feel depressed, they have anxiety, so they smoke,” said panelist Destiny Winter. “They’re constantly trying to solve these problems by self-medicating instead of seeking help,” said the 17-year-old Anclote High student. The group of youth leaders who make up STAND are determined to end youth substance abuse in Pasco County by educating teachers, police, business owners and other community members about their observations, and offering suggestions for solutions. The youth group is organized by the Pasco County Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP). This is the fourth year that members of

STAND have addressed members of numerous community stakeholder groups — in a forum arranged by ASAP — to talk about various health and safety issues facing Pasco youths. Marijuana has become prevalent among teens because of peer pressure and relatively easy access to the substance, panelists told the audience. And, the way it’s sensationalized in pop culture and social media hasn’t helped, either. ”It’s being influenced as cool, so they’re trying it out,” 14-year-old Land O’ Lakes High student Jocelyn Meriwether said. “I believe it’s happening because of its popularization online by many celebrities, many singers or rappers that kids listen to,” added 14-year-old Gulf High student Jeromy Vaughan. Moreover, the teens said the legalization of medical marijuana in Florida and throughout the country has contributed to the impression that it’s is OK to use, and a quick fix to cope with anxiety, boredom, sadness, depression and so on. Winter pointed out that her peers aren’t adequately warned about marijuana’s side effects, such as withdrawals that can result from abusing the substance. “They’re misled about how good it is

STAND’s mission is to:

• Change youth perspectives of drugs • Reduce accessibility of drugs • Reduce marketing of drugs to young people • Create an environment where young people in recovery can thrive

for you,” said Winter, an Anclote varsity basketball player. “They’re told constantly about all these benefits from their peers and from social media, but they’re not told enough about what might not be good,” she said.“It’s just misinformation.” The panelists also told those gathered at the Land O’ Lakes session that e-cigarettes and vaping, as well as vaping marijuana, are growing issues among teens. They said it’s perceived as both cool to do and safer than smoking because it’s electronic and so prevalent in public spaces, such as parks and beaches. Vaughan called vaping “the norm among this generation.” See PANEL, page 13A

Scout seeks to help others understand their tech tools By Brian Fernandes

bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com

Holly Roberts is one tech-savvy kid, and she wants to help others who may struggle in using their everyday devices. In fact, the young woman is so adept at using technology, she has initiated an effort to earn her Girl Scout Silver Award by sharing her skills. Her mother, Carrie, sparked the idea earlier this year, as she witnessed Holly’s expertise in using phones and computers. “She knew that I was good with technology, so she recommended,‘Hey, why don’t you do workshops?’ the 14-year-old said. So, the member of Zephyrhills Troop 148 decided to do just that. She and other members of her troop had to come up with their own ideas for pursuing the coveted Silver Award. Holly had her first tech workshop on June 27 at the GFWC Zephyrhills Woman’s Club building. She came prepared: She had surveys ready in order to get community feedback, and there were light refreshments available. She was joined by several others, including her mother and Tammy Whitworth, her troop leader. For additional support, she also recruited Desmond Gadson, the director of a network operation center. Gadson has committed himself to Holly’s project, helping to assist in breaking down technical jargon and giving those attending, guidance on using their phones. Holly said she wants to tailor her teaching skills to what people want to know, or have not yet discovered. That can include everything from downloading apps, taking photos, texting, using

emojis or understanding the meaning of technical terms. She’s thinking about using feedback she gets on her surveys to help her create a presentation on struggles that people have with technology and how they can address them, said the young woman who will be entering high school this year. Her mom said that Holly also is “looking at doing a Facebook page once it’s approved through our council, so people can use that as a reference. That council represents the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida (GSWCF), and requires that the surveys and project be completed by this October before having a social media presence. The council also will analyze whether the project is “sustainable in helping the

community and can continue to be of service long after the project is completed, Whitworth noted. Holly said she’s confident that her task will meet those requirements because people will always need help in better understanding technology. Holly is open to assisting people of all ages. She first received her Bronze Award working with her fellow scouts to build and paint a bench that was donated to the Humane Society in Brooksville. While the Silver Award doesn’t require a team effort, Holly said she’s ready to become a teacher and exercise the patience that comes along with the job. In fact, she’d already taken on that role before the project began.

The teen has been helping her grandmother discover new features on her smartphone. For instance, she taught her how to enhance text messages through the use of emojis. Carrie has learned a few lessons, too. “I took a picture, and I put words on it, Holly said.“She didn’t know how to do it. So, the teen gave her mother a step-bystep tutorial. “I was blown away, Carrie said, adding that Holly is still teaching her new things because technology is constantly evolving. That’s the kind of feedback Holly is hoping to get with her project — that it’s helpful and it’s needed. Holly also has her eyes set on achieving a Gold Award in the future, but for now her No. 1 priority is to help people use technology to make their lives easier. She will have her next workshop on July 11 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. It will be at the GFWC Zephyrhills Woman’s Club building at 38535 Fifth Ave., in Zephyrhills. Foundation helps foster kids develop ‘wings’ By Brian Fernandes bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com

As its name implies, Caterpillars to Butterflies is all about transformation — but this organization isn’t about insects — it’s all about helping Pasco County foster children to develop their “wings.” After Guardian ad Litem children are placed within a foster home, Caterpillars to Butterflies, a Dade City nonprofit, sets about trying to discern the children’s desires and to help fulfill them. It does this by working with the foster families, who seek to find out the child’s dreams and interests — and by helping the foster families find ways to pursue them. It’s a way to help these youth have a more well-rounded childhood, explained Tracy Hanson, president and founder of the nonprofit foundation. Hanson has been a Guardian ad Litem volunteer for the past five years – a position that inspired her to create Caterpillars to Butterflies. As a volunteer, she has the opportunity to mentor and befriend kids who are taken out of unsuitable households. She also gets to advocate for their best interest within the judicial system. However, the volunteer said, the outcome for many of these kids can be heart-wrenching. “One thing I noticed in the court system is these children would be taken from their homes and CPI (Child Protective Investigations) hands them a garbage bag and says, ‘Put your life in this bag. Then we’re going to remove you from the only home you’ve ever known.’That’s very defeating to these children,” Hanson said. In response, she began providing the youths with duffel bags for more durability – and Caterpillars to Butterflies was born. The idea is to give these children a chance to have experiences they enjoy, and to bring some joy into their lives. The organization began in January 2018. Caterpillars to Butterflies covers expenses that foster families incur, when helping the children take part in camps or other programs. This summer, the foundation will be funding foster kids for sports camps, as well as

Under the Caterpillars to Butterflies program, foster kids not only get to go on fun adventures of their choosing, but they also participate in annual events where they create and showcase their own artwork.

karate, swimming and dance classes. “We want them to see that we believe in them, that they can have dreams [and] we’re going to help them fulfill their dreams,” Hanson said. The foundation gathers kids and their new families to Hanson’s farm for two main events each year: Easter and Christmas celebrations. At those events, kids get to make and showcase their own art crafts to the public. They even get special visits from the Easter Bunny and Santa. Events, such as the Christmas program, raise money to support the kids’ adventures. With no government assistance, the foundation relies solely on community support for monetary needs. “We always need sponsors, we always need funding for these camps,” Hanson stated.“Every nickel that comes in, goes to these children.” Hanson does speaking engagements to increase public awareness of the program and to raise money. The organization also is a partner with the Greater Dade City Chamber of Commerce, which enables it to reach out for help.

SUMMER SAVINGS!

Hanson said Caterpillars to Butterflies understands that the foster parents often face financial constraints. “The stipend that the government gives the foster parents is not enough to go beyond your basic food – maybe a little bit of clothing,” she said. For instance, there was a case last December when seven youths were placed in homes that did not have adequate bedding. The foundation stepped in and provided mattresses, sheet sets and comforters. It also provides clothing and shoes, in some cases. As a new school year approaches, efforts are underway to collect new backpacks for foster kids and to fill them with essential school supplies. “It’s not just the children in the system that need the help, it’s the entire family,” Hanson explained. Besides lessening the financial burden on foster parents, Caterpillars to Butterflies gives foster parents a chance to take a break and have some leisure time for themselves. During Foster Parent Night Out, for in-

stance, kids do crafts, and enjoy food and movies, while their parents get some time off. Hanson and her staff’s long-term goal is to expand their program. They’ve been using social media, such as Facebook, to get their name out, and Hanson is eyeing a vacant building across from her office, in hopes that she might one day use it for the program. She sees possibilities. With additional space, for instance, former foster kids who are now of legal age, could mentor current foster kids. With more space, the program could offer cooking classes and provide an area that could be used for visitation time with their biological parents, and counseling services. Hanson also would like to provide tutoring services for the children and to raise scholarship funds for them. “So many of these children see no future, no hope, and the butterfly represents transformation,” she explained. “They can live a wonderful life. They can fly.” To learn more about Caterpillars to Butterflies or offer a donation, visit Caterflies.org.

Scrubs Are Fun, Comfortable and Fashionable When you visit your doctor or hospital, have you noticed that nurses and other medical staff are making fashion statements with their uniforms or scrubs? “The scrub industry has come a long way, I can recall years ago when most scrubs were a light blue color, were big and baggy with drawstring pants, and had one-pocket shirts that slipped on over your head,” said Judy Cornett, owner of Scrubs n’ Such in Lutz. “Thankfully, scrubs now come in all different shapes and sizes, with cargo pants that fit very comfortably and colorful print tops that you would never think were medical scrubs.” With the introduction of more attractive styles, along with new fabrics that make scrubs cooler, many professionals and technicians are wearing them, including safety personnel, veterinarians, massage therapists, hair stylists, cosmetologists, housekeepers, kitchen workers, chiropractors, pet sitters and even dog walkers. “Scrubs have become very trendy,” said Cornett. “We have scrubs for most sizes. Scrubs for women who want to show off their figure, and styles for those who want to cover it up. In addition to our large variety of styles, we carry scrubs in sizes from extra extra small to 5X. “Scrubs have evolved from one-size-fits-all, smock-like protection, to everyday out-andabout street clothing. People use them as pajamas, gym clothing, or even just fun and comfortable casualwear,” said Cornett. The décor of Cornett’s new store embraces

the advances in scrubs. Scrubs n’ Such has well-arranged wall displays, racks of attractive floral clothing and trendily attired mannequins. Jazzy music plays in the background, and fitting rooms resemble guest bedrooms with welcome rugs, ornate hooks and elegant drapery. “We want our store to be comfortable and boutiquey, but not expensive,” said Cornett. “Our décor is warm and inviting, and customers walk in and feel right at home. Our goal is to put smiles on the faces of customers, and to satisfy their needs and desires.” In addition to scrubs, the store also carries chef apparel, maternity wear, nonslip shoes, compression socks, stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, goggles, watches, pulse oximeters, Foozy Socks, lab coats, warm-up jackets, medical sleeves and medical accessories. It even offers in-house embroidery. “If you purchase a scrub set, jacket, or just one shirt, we’ll be more than happy to do same-day embroidery,” Cornett said. “Plus, we also embroider items not purchased in our store, something very few stores offer. “In fact, we have several physician’s offices that use our embroidery service, and we give discounts for group orders. And, if our store doesn’t have the size or color someone wants, we gladly special order.” Cornett believes it is important to support local businesses, and works hard to make Scrubs n’ Such a one-stop shop for uniforms and accessories that is conveniently located to keep people in Lutz, Land O’ Lakes and Wesley Chapel from having to travel outside the area for the latest trends.

The Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) encourages water conservation year-round. Following these 10 simple tips may help you lower your monthly water bill, and help you to save hundreds of gallons of water. Indoor: • Only run the washing machine and dishwasher when they are full. • Use the shortest clothes washing cycle for lightly soiled loads; normal and permanent-press wash cycles use more water. • Thaw frozen food in the refrigerator or microwave, and not under running water. • Scrape, don’t rinse, your dishes before loading in the dishwasher. • Install high-efficiency showerheads, faucets and toilets. Outdoor: • Check your home’s irrigation system for leaks. • Turn off your irrigation system and only water as needed.

• Don’t leave sprinklers unattended. Use a kitchen timer to remind yourself to turn sprinklers off. • Use a hose with a shut-off nozzle when washing the car. • Consider installing a rain barrel with a drip irrigation system for watering your landscaping. Rainwater is free and better for your plants because it doesn’t contain hard minerals. The biggest water waster, according to SWFWMD, is leaks, both inside and outside of your home. Use your water meter to check for leaks.Turn off all faucets and water-using appliances, and make sure no one uses water during the testing period. Wait for the hot water heater and ice cube makers to refill and for regeneration of water softeners. Go to your water meter and record the current reading. Wait 30 minutes (no water should be used during this period). Read the meter again. If the reading has changed, you have a leak. For more information, please visit WaterMatters.org/Conservation.

Pasco Tax Collector’s Office shifting services temporarily The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

Concealed weapons permit applications and fingerprinting, which are services normally provided at the Gulf Harbors office, will be available at the tax collector’s office at 4610 Pet Lane, C101, in Lutz. These services will continue through the duration of the remodel. The office thanks its customers in advance and apologizes for any inconvenience this temporary closure may cause, according to the news release. For more information about services available at the Pasco Tax Collector’s Office, locations, hours of operation, etc., visit PascoTaxes.com, or call (727) 847-8032; (813) 235-6076 or (352) 521-4338.

The Pasco County Tax Collector’s Office in Gulf Harbors, at 4720 U.S. 19 in New Port Richey, is closing temporarily, beginning Aug. 5, for renovations. The office is expected to reopen on Oct. 7, after extensive remodeling and building upgrades, according to a news release from Pasco County Tax Collector Mike Fasano’s office. While the office is closed, Fasano is encouraging customers to visit the tax collector’s office at the West Pasco Government Center, 8731 Citizens Drive, Room 120, in New Port Richey, 34654.

The 2019-2020 school year is fast approaching, and various organizations are hosting Back-to-School School Supply Drives to help those families that may not be able to afford the supplies that students need. Pasco County Tax Collector Mike Fasano is involved in the effort — with all five offices tax collector offices accepting donations throughout the month of July. Soon after that, select schools in each community will receive backpacks filled with supplies. And, cash donations will be made to the school’s ABC (Assist, Believe & Care) Program to help classroom teachers purchase the supplies necessary to meet the needs of their students. Monetary donations also can be mailed to:Tax Collector Mike Fasano, P.O. Box 276, Dade City, FL 33526. Please note “Back-toSchool Backpack Promotion” on the memo line of the check. For additional information, call Assistant Tax Collector Greg Giordano at (727) 8478179, or visit PascoTaxes.com. Gulfside Hospice Thrift Shoppes and the Kiwanis Club of Greater West Pasco also are helping students get ready for school. All five Gulfside thrift store locations will partner with the Kiwanis Club to collect items through July 27.The donations will be distributed to students in need at Pasco County elementary schools at the beginning of the school year.

CHRISTINE HOLTZMAN

Some families simply can’t afford the supplies that their children need when they head back to school.

Last year, shoppers and community members donated enough supplies to fill more than 300 backpacks, which were dispersed to 11 schools. The donors will get something back, too: They will receive a coupon for the thrift shop. To find out more, visit Gulfside.org. School supplies aren’t the only things on disadvantaged students’ wish lists. Pasco County’s government and constitutional offices staff again will compete to be the top collectors of new footwear for students during the “Two Good Soles” Shoe & Sock Drive, which kicks off on July 25. Last year’s drive resulted in donations of more than 2,200 pairs of shoes and 6,600 pairs of socks. The donated shoes and socks will be presented to Pasco County Schools at an official ceremony later this year. That drive runs through Oct. 25.

Summer is a popular time for eating outdoors — whether it’s at the beach or a park, or in someone’s backyard for a pool party or barbecue. Most of us are thinking more about having fun than thinking about food safety. But, it’s a good idea to keep food safety in mind, as you prepare your summer gettogethers. After all, foodborne illness rates typically increase during the summer months, and the Centers for Disease Control says that one in six Americans gets a foodborne illness each year. Some of those easily preventable illnesses can lead to a costly hospitalization. Here are some basics to keep your food safe, whether you are packing up for a picnic, or having a party in your own backyard. • Wash your hands with hot soap and water. If you will be at an outdoor space without sinks, be sure to pack moist towelettes. • Use separate utensils. The spatula that you used to place the raw burger on the grill should not be used when serving the cooked burgers. If you are going to an outdoor public space, make sure you pack plenty of utensils, plates, cutting boards and so on. • Have a food thermometer, and use it. Color is not an indicator that food is done; be sure to check the temperature with a food thermometer. As a reminder, the cooking temperature should read as follows: • Beef, pork, veal and lamb (roast, steaks, and chops): 145 degrees F • Ground meat (hamburger, fish patties): 160 degrees F • Poultry - whole, part, or ground (such as a turkey burger): 165 degrees F • Egg and egg dishes: 160 degrees F (Be sure the yolk and white are both firm) • When using an insulated cooler be sure to keep it in the shade and, if possible, avoid opening it repeatedly. The temperature of a full cooler stays lower than one that is half-full. • Perishable food should not sit out for more than 2 hours. (If it is sitting out in 90degree heat or higher, the window of time is only 1 hour. Bacteria thrive off of this warm temperature and can replicate much faster). Florida is known to get hot, so let’s not take any chances — when planning an outdoor gathering, be sure to keep food safety in mind. It may not be the most exciting or enjoy-

CRIME, from page 1A

KEVIN WEISS

The Pasco Sheriff’s Office recently expanded the capabilities of its online reporting system, which will allow citizens to selfreport a variety of incidents, such as lost property or criminal mischief. Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco stands at the podium in front of desk office supervisor Michael Toczylowski.

KITCHEN, from page 1A es and by SMARTstart. “It will be used for our members who might need to use it to launch their food businesses,” Mitchell said.“They’ll be able to do a little bit of production out of there, if they’re one of our incubator members, as well as collaborate with local growers, local chefs, other food entrepreneurs. “So, it will really be a space that will hopefully foster some food innovation, some excitement around food business in Pasco County. There’s a lot of that bubbling under the surface,” he said. For instance, the kitchen makes it possible for a family living in the area to lease a garden plot for free, grow some vegetables and make a product they could sell at a farmer’s market. “Once a business needs to grow beyond a farmer’s market, we have all of our SMARTstart programs, like co-starters, our microloan program, and everything else to support entrepreneurs,” Mitchell said. The Pasco EDC offers a host of programs

PANEL, from page 1A “It’s become a very big problem,” the teen said. “Everyone believes it’s OK. Everyone does it. Everyone knows someone that does it, and still no one says anything about it.” Added Winter: “I feel like many kids don’t understand the effects, they don’t understand we’re not quite sure yet what vaping is doing to our bodies and that there’s still research being done.”

To file a report, citizens will be required to list the incident type and provide other relevant information, such as a brief description of what happened, along with any photos or videos that can be used to help solve a case. Online reports will be reviewed during regular business hours. All cases filed using the online police reporting system will be reviewed. Upon review, the sheriff’s office may reach out if further investigation is needed. Citizens will receive a confirmation number upon completion of a report and will be notified if their case has been approved or rejected. If approved, citizens will be emailed a permanent case number. “This is better for our citizens,” Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said.“There’s a lot of resources, a lot of things that go on,

where (citizens) just need a case number, they just want a report number, but at the same time for our deputies, it saves us time and energy.” Nocco said citizens still have the option to request deputies to respond on-scene, to those various types of incidents, instead of using the online reporting. “No matter what, if you want a deputy to respond, we will send somebody out there accordingly,” Nocco said. The sheriff also pointed out the online system is more efficient for the law enforcement agency in several instances — such as dealing with multiple department stores who consistently report lost or stolen property following routine inventory checks. Those calls represent “a lot of work and a lot of resources,” Nocco said. The expanded online reporting capabilities makes it more convenient for citizens who may not be interested in waiting for a

aimed at helping businesses grow, at whatever stage they happen to be in, Mitchell noted. And, Pasco County has incentives aimed to attract high-wage jobs to the county. The idea of creating the incubator kitchen resulted from talks involving a variety of stakeholders, including the Pasco EDC, the Extension Office and others, Mitchell said. “What we noticed is there’s a lot interest in food businesses. There’s a lot of agriculture in Pasco County. There’s citrus, beef, kumquats, blueberries out East. Then out West we have some breweries and some seafood production. And, one of the things that we don’t have, however, is a good local distribution model, where food can get from these different producers to our local restaurants,” Mitchell said. But, he added, “there’s not a good easy way for these people to connect.” “It became apparent that it would be nice if we had some kind of food hub. So, the Pasco EDC decided to go ahead and host what’s called its Food Hub Task Force.” The group meets monthly, with the aim

of creating a model that will encourage food-related partnerships and generate jobs, he said. The commercial kitchen opens the door to new possibilities, Mitchell said. “If you produce the food in your own home, you’re not allowed to sell other than direct to consumer. If you produce in a commercial kitchen, you’re suddenly allowed to do a lot more,” he explained. A ribbon cutting to celebrate the incubator kitchen is planned for Sept. 23 at 2:30 p.m. Another event has been planned, as well, to help explore the possibilities the new kitchen is creating. That event is set for Nov. 20 and has been dubbed, “Food is the Biggest Business.” “We’re going to have four or five food entrepreneurs that are already successful. Maybe a successful restaurateur, maybe a food truck guy, maybe a celebrity chef. Those types of people,” Mitchell said. “It will be open to anyone interested in those types of businesses, from any direction,” he said, and, it will give people a chance to know others who share an interest in the food

industry — from a variety of perspectives. From there, who knows? “It really comes down to each individual entrepreneur and what their dreams are,” Mitchell said. But, whatever path they choose to pursue, chances are Pasco EDC will be able to help them along the way, Mitchell said.

Aside from drug use, 12-year-old Maddie Horn said youth violence is another issue in her community. “A lot of kids are generally angry,” said Horn,“and it could come from things that are happening at home, and they don’t know how to cope with that.” Besides talking about issues, STAND members offered some possible solutions. They advocated for more mentorship programs, such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, as well as more free afterschool programs, in general.

“I think partially just having safe spaces (would be good), places where kids can go after school that might not be home,” Winter said.“A lot of kids, especially in the area that we live in, don’t live in homes that are very supportive or leading them in the right direction. “Where I live, the rec center is the only free place I can go to hang out and feel safe, really,” she said. More robust education programs and awareness campaigns on the negative side effects of drug use might be another step

in the right direction, panelists agreed. “I remember last year we had three school assemblies and not a single one was about health or anything,” Vaughan said. “Just informing people about what happens when you do this kind of stuff and how your brain is affected, and how monumental it is compared to someone that doesn’t do it.” Other STAND panelists present were: Ashley Dew, 19; Yahkaira Barbosa, 14; Christos Loupis, 17; Moriah Morales, 15; and,Austin Vaughan, 13.

WORK

deputy to arrive when they want to report a property crime, said Pasco Sheriff desk office supervisor Michael Toczylowski, who’s unit will handle the online caseloads. “It’s great for the citizen where they don’t have to sit and wait for a deputy,” Toczylowski said,“because on a Friday or Saturday night when it’s busy, everybody’s coming home from work, there’s all sorts of incidents being reported, things are prioritized where (dispatchers) are going to send a deputy to a domestic disturbance first before coming to your house because somebody threw a rock at your car and broke a window.” While the new system may improve convenience and efficiency, it should not be used when reporting violent crimes or when a suspect may still be at the scene of the crime, officials said. Officials also urge residents to call 911 to report emergencies or life-threatening situations.

Lutz shows off its Fourth of July spirit By Brian Fernandes bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com

I

t may be three-quarters of a century old, but the Lutz Fourth of July Parade showed no signs of slowing down last week. Scores of people came out to this community, north of Tampa, to celebrate the nation’s birthday. Runners endured the morning’s humidity, as they completed the 5K and 1-mile races while being cheered by onlookers. By 8 a.m., pop music blared from the speakers as patrons came out in hordes to visit local vendors, who had set up on the expanse of green across from the Lutz Branch Library. Vendors were offering everything from homemade jams to burgers to antiques and other goods. There was a place where voters could register, too. Bubba Lee was there promoting his organic drinks called Bubba’s Earth Juice. Based in Wesley Chapel, the company promotes good health by offering various drinks made from such ingredients as kale, spinach, cinnamon, ginger and fruits. “I think it’s good for the body, and I want everybody to try it,” Lee said.“I want to make America healthy again,” he added. It was his first time at the Lutz event and he was impressed by the atmosphere. “I plan on coming back,” Lee said.“It seems to be pretty nice, and I like the fact that they’ve got runners here.” A more familiar vendor, Kona Ice, was present with its truck parked at the corner of U.S. 41 and Lutz Lake Fern Road. Matt Burnett stood in the truck ready to sell snow cones on this hot summer day. Kona Ice has been at the parade four times, Burnett said.“Each year, we do better and better.” The snow cones are a big hit with children and adults, he said. The kids tend to favor the blue-raspberry cones, while the adults like the mango-pina colada combo. AJ’s Snow Balls, across the field, was popular, too.A long line formed, as patrons stood in sweltering heat awaiting their turn to get their hands on the frozen treats. Runner Lauren Belbel took refuge in the shade, after finishing the 5K run with her sister. Belbel said she heard about the upcoming race, and was glad that she and her family — on vacation from Illinois — were able to be at the event. “It was pretty fun, [a] really good atmosphere to run in,” Belbel said.“Everyone seems really friendly and welcoming.” In fact, that Lutz welcome was so warm it was enough to make her consider coming

Mohamed Said, of Wesley Chapel, left, and his wife, Shannon, dressed their children — 4-month-old Sophia and 2-year-old Mila — in red, white and blue, to celebrate the nation’s birthday at the Fourth of July festivities in Lutz.

In his very first official race, 8-year-old Nathaniel Acosta, of New Tampa, right, is seen crossing the finish line of the 1-mile run. His father, Nathan, uses his cellphone to film the moment.

back again next year, she said. While some along the parade route were enjoying the festivities for the first time, there were regulars like David Bellingar, a Lutz resident for over 40 years. He was happy to share this year’s event with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Over the years, he has watched the parade evolve and witnessed all kinds of parade entries — including belly dancers. “Every year there’s something different,” Bellingar said, adding he enjoys the vendors. “I like to see what people bring to sell,” he said, including the antiques. And, he doesn’t mind the attention directed his way, either, as people comment on his signature hat. It’s hard to miss his brim hat decorated with small toy tractors and animals, as well as dollar bills folded in unique shapes. He won the hat at a fundraiser in a Lutz Guv’na campaign years ago, and he’s worn it to the parade every year since then. While spectators took notice of the tiny tractors on Bellingar’s hat, both children and adults were attracted to the life-size antique tractors and automobiles lining the open field near the Lutz Train Depot. Kids couldn’t wait to check out the tractors, which were brought to the event courtesy of Wayde Lovelace, of Just Tractors company. The Lutz resident sat to the side watching

inside the Lutz Community Center. Tables were laden with entries. The winning youth entry was titled “The Ultimate Lutz Candy Celebration Cake” and described as “An explosion of assorted candy that will gush out when cut.” Other entries were a red-white-and-blue cake shaped like the United States, an orange creamsicle cake, a fudge coconut cake, a vanilla confetti, and a sour cream cake. Sharon Oliphant, president of the GFWC Florida Woman’s Club, was one of three judges.“You can tell they did a lot of thinking ahead of time before they started decorating,” she said. Another highlight was the swearing-in ceremony of the new Lutz Guv’na. The honorary title goes to the person who raises the most money, which goes to help a variety of community causes. This year’s candidates, Amy Lancaster and Jane Mason, raised a total of $5,562, with Lancaster raising the most. In true Lutz tradition, she took the oath of office on the Old Lutz Depot stage — donning a Dr. Seuss hat, and receiving a sash and key to the city of Lutz. Her family joined her on stage. Lancaster’s efforts to raise funds to help her community and her family joining her on stage were just a couple of signs that Lutz’s time-honored traditions of celebrating Independence Day are still going strong, after 75 years.

happy children grab a tractor’s steering wheel — and said he comes to the event mainly for the kids. Boy Scout Troop 12 once again was involved in the event — arriving early to set up tables and to pitch in, where needed. “It’s a good feeling knowing that the whole troop can give back to the country, give back to the community,” said scout Sean Monahan. “I’ve been doing it as long as I’ve been in Boy Scouts itself, since I was 11. I even did it with the Cub Scouts, since I was in first grade.” Fellow scout Mason Ritchie added:“I have not missed a single parade. I always like to march in the front of the parade with the American flag.” And, sure enough,Troop 12 led the parade as the procession made its way down Lutz Lake Fern Road. There were other regulars in the parade, too, including the GFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club, the Lutz Chiefs, The North Tampa Lutz Cadette Squadron, band players, the Lutz Chiefs, an antique fire truck and children riding bikes. Large crowds lined the parade route, chanting and cheering as the parade passed by. Those passing by in fire engines, pirate ships, military vehicles, jeeps and other vehicles did more than just wave back — they also tossed out candy, beads and toys into the enthusiastic crowd. While most of the festivities were outdoors, there was a cake contest and auction

Gilly is a curious cat Gilly is a sweet 6-year-old female kitty that arrived at the shelter in late May. She always wants to meet new people. Gilly loves to cuddle into small spaces, and head scratches are her favorite.

Kota is rambunctious Kota was found as a stray in May and is estimated to be about 1 ½-years years old. He is handsome and quite playful, and has some difficulty keeping all that energy to himself. Kota may show poorly in his kennel at times. If you are looking for an active family member, consider visiting the shelter and asking to meet Kota in one of show yards.

If you would like to adopt Gilly or Kota, be sure to visit Pasco County Animal Services at 19640 Dogpatch Lane in Land O’ Lakes. The adoption center is open Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 6:30 p.m. All adoption fees include spay/neuter, microchip and vaccines. For more information, email adoptionpartners@pascocountyfl.net.

A regal stance

Allen Craley, of Land O’ Lakes, took this photo of a red-shouldered hawk in his front yard. This particular hawk is a familiar sight to residents of Sable Ridge and, as luck would have it, it decided to strike a regal pose for the camera. A red-shouldered hawk is typically a sign of tall woods and water nearby.

HEALTH

REDUCE THE SPREAD OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES

NEWS

Hospital infections have become all too common and can be particularly hazardous for the elderly. Although not a guarantee, here are a few simple steps to help diminish the risk of staph infections and other infections when a loved one, particularly an older loved one, is in the hospital. • Ask everyone who comes in contact with the patient to wash their hands before touching the patient. Bring your own bottle of hand sanitizer to put at the bedside. Hang a sign asking people to “Please wash hands before touching.” • Ask the physicians to clean their stethoscopes with anti-bacterial gel on the flat, round part before touching the patient. Bring a pack of anti-bacterial wipes to leave in the patient’s room. • Ask if antibiotics can be given before surgery to help prevent an infection. • Ask for a private room, if possible. • As a visitor, do not use the patient’s bathroom.

AUTISM GRANTS

Every year, the Florida Support Autism Programs Specialty License Plate generates funds that support nonprofit organizations providing direct services for individuals with autism and related disabilities in Florida. According to a news release from the Autism Services Grants Council, in 2018, nearly $99,600 was awarded to nonprofit organizations throughout Florida. All nonprofit organizations with a current Internal Revenue Service designation as a 501c(3) exempt organization, and a current State of Florida Charitable Solicitation Registration number that are providing services to individuals with autism and related disabilities in Florida are eligible to apply. For information and to submit a proposal, visit AutismLicensePlate.com/grant-application/. The deadline is July 31.

Rainbow Light, a supplement brand, and Vitamin Angels, a charity that provides lifesaving vitamins to mothers and children at risk of malnutrition, teamed up for the Shine Your Light campaign. The organizations visited Guiding Star Tampa in Lutz and the Immokalee Pregnancy Center, to drop off essential vitamins for women and their families. The teams also met with the clinicians and staff at each location. Rainbow Light is celebrating its 25th anniversary with its first-ever domestic vitamin drop-offs to help underserved communities across the United States.

• As a visitor, do not put a purse, briefcase or backpack on the floor or any surface of the hospital room. • Do not bring children to the hospital room, as they could spread germs or leave

germs behind. • Wash your hands after touching the elevator buttons. For more information, please visit VeryWellHealth.com.

To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
