As a very young boy, Tim Beard would walk a mile each way to buy a newspaper at the store so he could devour stories about his beloved St. Louis Cardinals. He admired such players as Lou Brock, Joe Torre and Bob Gibson — and delighted in reading about their pursuits. He recalled that he was only 5 or 6 years old when he was making those treks to the store. Literacy and athletics were twin loves in his life, until Beard decided he would spend less energy on athletics and give his full attention to education. He grew up in poverty in the Panhandle town of St. Joe — and now he leads PascoHernando State College. Before becoming president of the college on July 1, he served as a vice president at the college for eight years. He claimed the role vacated by Katherine Johnson, who retired after a decade at the helm. Beard is clearly excited about the possibilities. As an internal candidate for the post, Beard said he had the advantage of under-

standing the college and knowing its pulse. “I know the institution. I know the flow. I know the community,” Beard said. As PHSC’s new leader, he’s already starting to carry out his game plan. He’s identified key focus areas. Those include increasing student retention and degree completion rates, expanding partnerships, and securing more funding to support programs. To help retain students, Beard is launching an initiative called Retention Behavioral Inventory, or RBI, for short. He plans to have weekly conference calls with PHSC administrators to keep the goal of improving student retention and degree completion rates at the forefront for the college’s leadership team. Together, they’ll review the data to see how the college is doing. And, they’ll discuss the numbers, talk about why students withdraw and examine if there is anything they could have done to prevent the withdrawals. “The big piece is going to be a referral piece,” the college president said. “If we find out that a student withdrew because of finances, can we find a financial source See PHSC, page 11A

Truly, it doesn’t matter if The Laker/Lutz News “wins” in award competitions. What matters is that the business community, our newspaper industry and our readers recognize and value the work we do, and understand the contributions that we make to local businesses and to the community we serve. Like the hundreds of businesses who advertise in our pages, we experience the same joys and challenges of working for, or owning, a small business. And like all successful businesses, we take incredible pride in the work that we do and are exuberant when our work receives recognition.

Pine View aims to become IB middle school By B.C. Manion
bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com
Pine View Middle School has begun a quest to become the first school in Pasco County to offer a Middle Years Programme, under the auspices of the International Baccalaureate Organization. While the school is launching its candidacy for the MYP designation, it also has ended its stand-alone program for academically gifted students. Those decisions have sparked some pushback from parents who shared their concerns with the Pasco County School Board. Some said they didn’t want to lose the stand-alone gifted program. Others complained about a lack of buyin by stakeholders before going down the MYP path. Principal Jennifer Mathews-Crosby acknowledged the pushback from parents, but said she’s excited about the opportunities the Middle Years Programme will offer. Some people may have the wrong idea about what MYP is all about, she said. “There is a misconception that when you have an International Baccalaureate program that it must be for those high-rigor type students,” Mathews-Crosby said.“We really needed to break through those perceptions. The whole premise behind the Middle Years Programme is about the whole child.” The beauty of the MYP is that it celebrates the uniqueness of students, said Pio Rizzo, an assistant principal, whose children attended a Primary Years Programme in Manatee County.
some learning for us, as we go through this,” she said. “We’re going to be open-minded to people who maybe don’t necessarily agree with the direction that we may be going, and hear their thoughts,” Mathews-Crosby added. Not every MYP operates in the same way, she noted. “We have visited other schools in the state, and they are very different in a lot of ways.” To get things started, the entire staff at Pine View Middle will be trained in the MYP philosophy on Aug. 14. Teachers will be building their unit plans with the global perspectives of the MYP. Mathews-Crosby believes the program will expand learning opportunities for all students. “It really takes it deeper and wider,” she said. It takes what teachers are already teaching, but makes broader connections, she explained. Kyle Ritsema, a new assistant principal at COURTESY OF PINE VIEW MIDDLE SCHOOL Pine View Middle, said he’s glad to be a part Administrators for Pine View Middle School are excited about leading the first school in of the new program. GET SCHOOL IMMUNIZATIONS EARLY
The Florida Department of Health in Pasco County reminds parents to have their children immunized early to avoid the backto-school rush. Parents of kindergartners and seventh-graders are encouraged to review their children’s immunization record to ensure readiness for the upcoming school year. If parents do not have a copy of the child’s immunization record, they should ask their provider about Florida Shots, the database that records immunizations. Students entering college also are encouraged to ensure their immunizations are up to date. The following vaccines are required for children entering preschool and grades K through 12: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, measles, mumps, rubella, polio, chickenpox and hepatitis B. Students entering college should check with health services at their respective college regarding requirements. For information on upcoming back-toschool immunization events, visit Pasco.FloridaHealth.gov/.

Third Generation at A. Kilbride Insurance By Meaghan O'Neal Special to The Laker/Lutz News In 1954, A. Kilbride Insurance began as a small business with just one location. Today, 61 years later, the Kilbride family still owns the business and is looking to expand beyond their five locations. It all began with Adrian Kilbride, who had the aspiration to start an insurance agency to help people find the coverage they needed. He moved his family from Boston to Tampa and began handling personal insurance. In 1981, Kilbride’s daughter, Adrienne Decker, bought the business from her dad and added commercial insurance lines, including commercial auto, business property, workers compensation, general liability and bonds. Adrienne also expanded the company’s personal lines, adding homeowners, flood, health and life insurance. Fast forward another 34 years and now Adrienne’s daughter, Nicole Gee, is planning on buying the business from her mother and continuing the Kilbride family legacy. A. Kilbride Insurance operates as an independent agent, allows the company to serve clients better with many attractive choices. “Because our family has been in business for so long, we’ve been able to expand our market of insurance companies through the trust and reputation we’ve built,” said Adrienne. “And because we have a market of companies to choose from, we can shop for companies that truly offer the best coverage and best price for a client.” Adrienne added, “If you come to us and need insurance, we can make a decision about which company will best fit your needs. I love to get to know our clients personally so I can better decipher what their real needs are.” The number one goal at A. Kilbride is to serve clients well. “Because our focus has always been to do what’s best for clients, we continued to flourish when the economy

April Sasser, an agent who works in the firm’s Land O’ Lakes office. went down and a lot of agencies went out of business,” said Adrienne. Kilbride is different than other agencies because it has multiple locations with each one focusing on a different type of insurance. From the start, the company realized that staff members could not be experts in everything. So based on that premise, they hired people who have different strengths and spread them out to their different locations. For example, the office in North Tampa at 1401 W. Busch Blvd. specializes in commercial policies, while their Land O’ Lakes location at 2436 Land O'Lakes Blvd. is focused on personal policies and commercial. Adrienne is very proud of each location, but is especially excited to see the recent growth and success of their Land O’ Lakes office. Working at this office for the past year is April Sasser, who is a specialist in personal lines. “I was drawn to work for A. Kilbride because of the family atmosphere it offers,” said April. “As an insurance agent, I strive to save clients money while giving them the best coverage they can possibly have. I let them know that I’m here for them.” Adrienne is looking forward to expanding the company again with a new branch in Wesley Chapel sometime in the near future. Like the Land O’ Lakes Office, this new branch will focus on personal lines for new homeowners, as well as commercial lines for new business owners.

Your weight loss Keep your cool in the heat journey begins here.
The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report
Bayfront Health Dade City is reminding the community that high temperatures have risks. The warm weather of summer creates more opportunities for people to spend time outside.Whether you are working, exercising or doing other activities, it is important to protect yourself from heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Know what to expect when you are planning outdoor activities by checking the temperature and heat index.Try to plan exercise and outdoor activities during the cooler parts of the day, early morning and late afternoon. “Spending time in cool, air conditioned areas is the best way to prevent heat illness, but when you are in the heat make sure to wear loose, light colored clothing and drink lots of water,” Dr. Carl Werne, a family practice physician at Bayfront Health Medical Group, said in a release. “Adults over 65, young children, people with existing medical problems such as heart disease and people without access to air conditioning are at a high risk for suffering from a heat related illness.” Heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and rash, occur when the body cannot cool itself down in extremely hot weather. Heat stroke is the most severe form and can cause death or permanent disability
if treatment is not provided. Regularly check on individuals who have a higher risk for getting heat illnesses, and do not leave children and pets in the car or outside in the heat. Some of the warning signs for heat exhaustion can be heavy sweating; weakness; cold, pale, and clammy skin; fast, weak pulse; nausea or vomiting and fainting. If you or someone near you is experiencing these symptoms, take the following recommended steps: • Move to a cool location • Lie down and loosen clothing • Apply cold, wet cloths • Sip water Signs of heat stroke include hot, red, dry or moist skin, rapid and strong pulse or possible unconsciousness. Heat stroke is an emergency. If you think someone is experiencing symptoms, take immediate action: • Seek medical attention, and dial 911 • Move the person to a cool location • Reduce body temperature with a cool bath or cloths • Do not give fluids If you do not have air conditioning in your home, spend time in public places, such as shopping malls, a public library or a heatrelief shelter during extremely hot weather. Even a few hours spent out of the heat can keep your body cool. Bayfront Health Dade City is prepared to provide treatment for heat illnesses. For information, call (352) 521-1150, or visit BayfrontDadeCity.com.

Garden Montessori Charter School won’t open in 2015 By Kathy Steele
ksteele@lakerlutznews.com
A unexpected snag in securing a lease means the Garden Montessori Charter School will delay its opening date by at least a year. The school for students in kindergarten through sixth grade was scheduled to open on Aug. 24 at the Sports and Field Complex, off State Road 56 in Wesley Chapel. “The difficult decision, made by its Board of Directors, was based on a breakdown in the final negotiations of the lease contract,” according to a statement released by Garden Montessori’s board. “The deciding factors to delay the opening of the school year were based on the need to ensure the future success of the school, faculty and most importantly the children.” Garden Montessori is one of two Pasco County schools awarded charters for 20152016. The other is Plato Academy, which started in Pinellas County, and is in an expansion mode. Its eighth location would have been in Pasco, but district school officials said that also is being delayed. Darlene Pla-Schantz, Garden Montessori’s
JOBS, from page 1A State Road 54, around the Interstate 75 interchange. “The retail is following the rooftops,” said Melanie Kendrick, senior planner for economic development in Pasco. Tampa Premium Outlets, the centerpiece for Cypress Creek Town Center, is sprouting. It is expected to have more than 110 stores and will provide an estimated 800 jobs. The Shops at Wiregrass is expanding. And, other retail development, including Mercedes Benz, Buffalo Wild Wings and Dairy Queen, is popping up. Abutting the outlet mall, the town center also will have more retail including Kohl’s, Costco, Culver’s, Cheddar’s Casual Café, and BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse. Job numbers for this project aren’t available. More hotels, shops, restaurants and offices are on a waiting list, marked ‘coming soon’ for a site on the north side of State Road 56, also part of Cypress Creek Town Center. On Oct. 29, Tampa Premium Outlets will be the first to hit the start button. “This is like a bonus,” said John Hagen, president of the PEDC. “It will definitely raise the amount of money coming into the community. It makes the economic pie bigger.” People are put to work, the Penny for Pasco program gets fattened with more pennies and Pasco’s image shines brighter in the marketplace. “It is a destination… It will help people understand that there is a Pasco County,” Hagen said. “This is a place. It has place-making attributes that are important to us. It’s hard for people to think about (Pasco) in terms of a place.” Retail already has shown it can spark other development. Pasco-Hernando State College located its Porter Campus at the mall. It currently has a staff of about 60 employees and 100 ad-
associate education director, said the school had enrolled 196 students for 2015-2016. She said school and district officials are working to answer parents’ questions and help with a smooth start for those students affected by the delay. The school district had not received Garden Montessori’s enrollment list for the upcoming school term, said Linda Cobbe, Pasco school district’s spokeswoman. So she said the district routinely had assigned all but one of those students to schools in zones where they would have gone last year. Any placement changes will have to wait until the 20-day enrollment count after the district’s Aug. 24 opening day. “We don’t know where we’ll have seats,” Cobbe said. The district office has fielded a few calls from parents. “This is pretty last minute, especially for parents of kindergartners,” Cobbe said. “This FILE PHOTO is all new to them.” Ella Selover works on a botanical puzzle at Garden Montessori’s board has sent a Garden Montessori, a private, preschool. The letter to the Pasco school district requestschool’s board had hoped to open a public ing approval for a “planning year” in charter school, with free tuition, for kinder2015-2016. junct faculty members. Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel, near Wiregrass, added 600 jobs to the economy when it opened nearly three years ago. The hospital is investing $78 million in an expansion at the hospital. And Florida Medical Clinic, just north of Wiregrass, also is expanding in Wesley Chapel and Land O’ Lakes. On State Road 54, a new Lowe’s warehouse store opened in April, bringing with it as many as 160 jobs. Businessman Gordie Zimmerman is building Florida Hospital Center Ice, a sports complex with four ice rinks and a removable pad that can allow for more sports such as volleyball, soccer, basketball and lacrosse. The 150,000 square foot facility, off State Road 56, can also accommodate nonsports events such as dog shows and graduations. It is expected to attract national and international sports competitions. All of these generate more sales tax revenues from people shopping and dining in Pasco. And, a portion of those Pasco pennies will be dedicated this year to the Jobs and Economic Trust Fund to provide business incentives to locate in Pasco. County officials have estimated that $45 million to $50 million will flow from the Penny for Pasco program to stimulate economic development. Hagen recently delivered the PEDC’s third quarter report to the Pasco County Commission. The data showed that to date, 415 jobs had been created through the agency’s efforts in 2015. On July 24, the PEDC upped that number by 124 jobs with its announcement that Leggett & Platt, a global manufacturing company, plans to open an 80,000-square- foot facility near Spring Hill. The plant will assemble adjustable bed bases. Company officials have pledged to hire locally and contract with suppliers within the Tampa Bay region.
on a date to be determined. The school’s charter is in effect for five years, including the requested planning year. Garden Montessori began in 2009 as a private preschool and kindergarten academy, teaching with the Montessori method. The charter delay doesn’t affect that school’s operations. One of the Montessori features is a multiage classroom where students have the same teacher for three years. Parents had urged the board to pursue a charter so their children could extend their Montessori experience. The approved charter is for a tuitionfree, public kindergarten through sixth grade school. The opening year allowed for up to 270 students. The board planned to begin with kindergarten through second grade, adding a grade each year until the fifth year when enrollment would increase to 540 students. “This time will be used to define, develop and execute a strategic plan for the immediate and future needs of the community,” according to the statement from Garden Montessori’s board.

Wharton athlete runs past pain and into college By Michael Murillo
mmurillo@lakerlutznews.com
Mollie Golicher was a skilled runner and was expected to be a big part of Wharton High School’s cross-country and track teams. After all, her older sister, Kallie, was a standout runner for the school. Kallie earned a letter all four years of high school, was a team captain for both cross-country and track, and won school awards for athletic excellence. So, even before she stepped onto a single track or course, big things were expected of Mollie. “Her sister was kind of an all-everything runner, and everybody expects her to be the same thing,” recalled Kyle LoJacono, the Wharton boys’ cross-country and track coach who also spends a lot of time working with the girls’ team. For Golicher’s freshman and sophomore years, things went according to plan. She was one of the school’s top runners in cross-country and track. But then there were problems. Specifically, she had problems with her hips. As she got older and continued to grow, she was having trouble doing her normal running. Her hips would make clicking sounds, and she felt excruciating pain. And that made it impossible to be the athlete she was expected to be. “It got really bad, to the point that it hurt to walk around school,” Golicher said. “If I sat down for a while, my hips would hurt getting up.” With her junior year a wash, Golicher focused on bouncing back her senior year, working hard and preparing to re-establish herself at the top of her sport. She did what her coaches told her to do. She did everything right. Unfortunately, things went wrong. As a senior, practicing became a constant exercise in pain. Instead of being able to focus on running, Golicher was just trying to get through the activity in one piece. “The pain is just to the point where she can’t get through simple runs sometimes without just breaking down crying, because there was so much pain,” LoJacono said. At that point it would almost make sense to quit. Golicher could have taken the easy path and moved on to something else. But if being a top runner wasn’t an option anymore, neither was quitting. Despite her struggles, Golicher became a team captain in both cross-country and
Coach Kyle LoJacono talks with Golicher after her final high school track meet. But it’s not the end of her running career. She’ll run for Wofford College in South Carolina as a freshman.

Mollie Golicher struggled with severe hip pain throughout her junior and senior seasons. But she kept a leadership position on the team while she worked on her running, and her efforts paid off. Wharton High School won district titles in both cross-country and track.
track. And she took the leadership role seriously. “In senior year when I became a captain, I knew I had to support my team no matter what I was going through, to push the younger runners to their full potential and to push the team in general, and be a leader and role model for the younger runners,”
Golicher said. She also got support from Kallie, now running for the College of Charleston, a Division I school in South Carolina. She encouraged her little sister to look at the big picture, and not give up on the idea of running in college herself one day. She followed her sister’s advice. She en-
couraged and supported the top runners — most of whom were freshmen and sophomores. Her attitude and knowledge wasn’t just helpful to the team. According to LoJacono, it was instrumental to their success. “We could not have won districts in both cross-country and track without Mollie. She was like having another coach out there,” he said. As a result, the girls cross-country team won their district for the first time in six years, reaching the state level of competition. The track team also continued its winning ways, claiming their second straight district crown. And Golicher kept running as well. The pain lessened over time — becoming more manageable — through stretching and strength conditioning. She also kept working to improve her times. That effort also paid off. Golicher will enter her freshman year at Wofford College in South Carolina as a runner, while she studies sociology and business. So, despite her challenges in high school, Golicher, like her sister, will run for a Division I program in college. She also realizes that she became a big part of Wharton’s success after all. It just wasn’t the role she thought she would play. “I was really proud of them, and how far they’ve gone and how far they pushed themselves to even get to states,” Golicher said. “I tried my best to be a role model for them, and support them and help them push themselves to get to states and run the best times they could.”

competing against the best of other nations around the world. They tied China 0-0 in a hard-fought defensive battle. They defeated Luxembourg, 4-2. And they fell to Liechtenstein in a high-scoring affair, 5-4, and to the Czech Republic in a tight contest, 2-1. That left a rematch with China to de-

LEARNING THE ART OF
BONSAI FRED BELLET/PHOTOS
Sandy Ruddock trims a 130-year old statuesque gardenia tree as Sandra Campos, of Land O’ Lakes, looks on. Ruddock offers advice to bonsai hobbyists and enthusiasts every Saturday at Eve’s Garden Gifts in Land O’ Lakes. Purchased in China some 40 years ago, h t is spectacular bonsai gardenia sells for $15,000. Ruddock said most bonsai customers of the Land O’ Lakes business make their purchases online.
The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report
I
f you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at the art of bonsai, there’s a place you can go to in Land O’ Lakes that offers free lessons. Every Saturday during summer months, anyone interested in learning more about bonsai can visit Eve’s Garden Gifts, at 5602 Land O’ Lakes Blvd. The free seminars are offered between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sandy Ruddock will be there to share her knowledge about the kinds of cuts to achieve a desired result. Bonsai refers to the art of growing bonsai, which Merriam-Webster defines as a very small tree or bush that is grown in a pot by using special methods to control its growth.
At left, Sandy Ruddock knows her stuff when it comes to stunting the growth of a Chinese Elm tree. She focuses on having bonsai trees as a hobby and relieving stress. Guests can bring their own bonsai trees for the demonstrations and advice.
Basically, any plant or tree that can be grown in a container can be made into a bonsai. Here, this bonsai pomegranate tree yields miniature fruit. The art of bonsai requires taking control of the tree or plants shape. Wires are used to dwarf plants and trees, holding branches and trunks down. As long as the plant is alive, it will require periodic trimming, sculpting and maintenance.
While the craft of Bonsai yields beautiful results, be prepared for dirty hands. Here, Sandy Ruddock transplants a ponytail palm that normally grows to 10-feet tall. But through a series of wires, the plant, which is actually in the lily family, is stunted to a little more than a foot.
Rows of work in progress await the skilled hands of Sandy Ruddock, who said she uses the art of bonsai on trees every day.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
MARION L. BOUDREAU Marion Lee Boudreau “Bud” 80 years old is now with his beautiful wife Barbara in Heaven whom preceded Marion in death 8 months ago. On July 27, 2015 Marion passed away at his home with no complications that we know of, he was found by a neighbor. Thank you. Marion Lee Boudreau was born March 25, 1935 in Washington, Kansas to George and Martha Marie (Williams) Boudreau which have preceded him in death. Marion also had a younger brother Bobby Dean Boudreau whom preceded him in death. He was a lifelong resident and friend of many in Manhattan, Kansas and surrounding area. After attending Manhattan High School Marion went to work for Kansas Power and Light Company on April 27,1953 where served his lineman apprenticeship. He received the Presidents Medal once upon a time for saving another lineman’s life, you see that was just who Bud was, you could always count on him. Marion worked for Kansas Power and Light until his retirement in 1992 after 39 years of service. Marion loved to do for others and kept busy helping many people up until the day that he died, Bud was found on the trailer that he used to hauled his old mini excavator around doing small jobs for his friends. Marion is survived by his daughter Christina “Chris” Claudio of Manhattan, Kansas and her children: Triston Washington, Tyler and Sara (Easton) Marion of Anchorage, Alaska, Travis Morningstar of Brooklyn, New York and Tiffany Morningstar of Savannah, Georgia. Marion is also survived by his son Robert “Todd” and Teresa (Stafford) Boudreau of Land O Lakes, FL, and their three children: Brandon, Logan and Morgan Boudreau. Marion and his jokes will be missed and his positive outlook on life. He always said keep your head up high and keep marching forward, Dad also said don’t lose your sense of humor or you are done for. I once had friend tell me (and he will know who he is when he reads this) You act like your dad is God or something, and I simply replied to the gentlemen, as far as I was concerned he had given a perfect description and thank you for the compliment about Dad. Dad I know that you are in a better place now, we wish that we could have said goodbye to you, Dad (Grandpa) we know that you will be with us all in spirit we love you and will miss you, give mom a kiss for all of us. Memorial services for Mr. Boudreau will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday August 4, 2015 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Ben Duerfeldt officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan. Memorial contributions in memory of Bud are suggested to the Riley County Animal Shelter or the Flint Hills Breadbasket. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502. Online condolences may be left for the family through the funeral home website at www.ymlfuneralhome.com
