Unstable sinkhole claims 7 homes By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com
Pasco County building inspectors have condemned five additional homes — because of recent destabilization of a sinkhole on Ocean Pines Drive in Land O’ Lakes. Pasco County officials say the sinkhole grew another 30 feet, to a diameter of around 260 feet, after a bank on the western edge—closest to Lake Saxon — collapsed between the evening of Aug. 3 and the morning of Aug. 5. Previously, the sinkhole measured between 225 feet wide to 235 feet wide and approximately 50 feet deep. The recent destabilization may have resulted from seismic vibrations caused by heavy construction equipment operating nearby the site, according to Kevin Guthrie, the assistant county administrator for public

When students arrive at Land O’ Lakes High School next week, they’ll see construction crews busy on a $29 million makeover that’s expected to take two years. But, great care is being taken to ensure that students and staff are kept out of the path of work crews, and vice versa, said John Petrashek, director of construction services for Pasco County Schools. During a recent tour of the school, Petrashek and Marc Graham, project superintendent for Walbridge, explained what the project entails and how it has been scheduled to allow the campus to be occupied during construction. “It’s a five-phase project,” Graham said, with areas being walled or fenced off, to allow students, faculty and staff to carry on their activities, while crews work to modernize and reconfigure spaces in the high school. Shaping a vision for transportation in Pasco By Kathy Steele ksteele@lakerlutznews.com
The next phase in a transportation vision for Tampa Bay took a local turn into Pasco County. More than 30 residents from Pasco and Hernando counties met on Aug. 3 as a “working group” tasked with recommending future transportation decisions. A discussion on transportation solutions on the State Road 54/56 corridor will begin anew on Aug. 24, with the second in a series of meetings by the Vision 54/56 Task Force. The 17-member, volunteer task force had an organizational meeting in April. The study by the task force members will consider practical solutions to easing congestion, and promoting greater safety and mobility on a corridor that is bursting with new residential and commercial development. This is the second phase of a three-part initiative that began in 2016 with a task force that recommended 11 major highway and transit alternatives, as well as a no-build alternative. Those recommendations will get greater scrutiny in this second phase, with more focus on design and details of potential road projects. Some options under review include designs for elevated lanes, and redesigns at ground level. Some options include dedicated lanes for buses, and others don’t. The entire study includes the corridor, from Bruce B. Downs Boulevard on the east to U.S. 19 on the west. However, the focus currently is on two intersections: Little Road and State Road 54 in New Port Richey, and U.S. 41 and State Road 54 in Land O’ Lakes. Representatives from Pasco County Planning and Development, the county’s Metropolitan Planning Organization, Florida Department of Transportation and consultants with AECOM are assisting in the study. A third meeting is planned in 2017, probably in October. At least two additional meetings are planned in 2018, but no dates are scheduled. For information, visit PascoCountyFl.net. Bilirakis talks health care reform By Kevin Weiss
kweiss@lakerlutznews.com
Health care reform was the main topic during U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis’s visit to Zephyrhills last week. Bilirakis, who represents Florida’s 12th congressional district, was the featured speaker during The Greater Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce monthly meeting on Aug. 3. He said he was “very disappointed” when the Republican party’s reform and repeal of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) stalled in the Senate. The so-called skinny repeal bill, which the GOP titled the Health Care Freedom Act, would have eliminated the ACA’s individual mandate; delayed the employer mandate until 2025; allowed states greater flexibility in implementing market reforms, such as essential health benefits and out-ofpocket spending limits; and increased Health Savings Account limits for three years, among other changes. However, according to the Congressional Budget Office, the skinny repeal bill would have increased the number of uninsured by 16 million over the next nine years and increased health care exchange premiums by more than 20 percent. The measure sank on July 27, in a 49-51 Senate vote, with three Republican senators — Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and John McCain of Arizona — joining the entire Democratic caucus against the bill. The action, Bilirakis said, displayed his party’s inability to stick together. “To be honest with you, you can’t keep voting ‘no.’ Maybe you’re a hero at home, but you’ve got to work with the leadership to get things done,” he said. Bilirakis acknowledged he “didn’t agree with everything” in the bill, but noted it was a good starting point to replace Obamacare.
“Obamacare is failing,” Bilirakis said to a roomful of constituents.“Seventy-three percent of the counties in our state only have one provider...so we have to fix it, we have to do something different, we have to bring the (deductibles) down. “Now, don’t get me wrong, we want to take care of the pre-existing conditions. I want to make sure that everyone has access to mental health treatment, if their family member needs it or if they need it.These are very important issues to me, they’re close to my heart,” he added. Bilirakis said he wanted to see the skinny bill pass, mainly so it could be improved in a House-Senate conference committee. “We don’t do that very often anymore,” he said, “where we go to conference, appoint Republicans and Democrats in a room, and make it work.” Meanwhile, Bilirakis assigned blame to both parties for not crafting a viable bipartisan solution on health care. “We’ve got to think of the country first, and work together. That’s what voters mostly want,” Bilirakis said. “With health care, it shouldn’t be a political issue. It’s a personal issue, and both parties should be involved in getting this done, because both parties have good ideas,” he later added. He also criticized President Donald Trump for his shifting stance on health care. Regarding Obamacare, the president has waffled on the following actions: Repeal and replace Repeal only, then replace Let it “fail.” “Listen, I am a Trump supporter, but he’s got to be consistent in what his plan is,” Bilirakis said. “These members (of the Senate) are not going to buy it, just saying we’ve got to pass a bill. It’s got to be a good bill.” Bilirakis, though, did credit the president for reducing regulations on U.S. businesses,
as well as the soaring stock market— the Dow Jones industrial average passed the 22,000 mark for the first time on Aug. 3. “The economy’s much better. We are making a difference, but we can do better,” Bilirakis said. Elsewhere, the congressman discussed some of his recently introduced bills, such as The Lower Costs Through Competition Act and The Open Act, both related to health care. The Lower Costs Through Competition Act, co-sponsored by Democratic Rep. Kurt Schrader of Oregon, seeks to reduce prescription drug prices by speeding up Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of high-cost generic products, which lack competition. Bilirakis pointed to last year’s EpiPen controversy, where Mylan, the makers of the life saving, anti-allergic reaction device, increased its product price by nearly 400 percent, to $700 for a twin-pack. “The EpiPen situation — that was horrible,” he said.“There’s a couple of other drugs like that, and you have these monopolies out there that are taking advantage, and so we want to make we speed up the FDA process, the approval process and incentivize these companies to reduce the prices.” The bill, introduced in January, has since been referred to the House Subcommittee on Health. “It’s a no-brainer, but in (Washington) D.C., sometimes the no-brainers won’t pass, so you’ve got to keep pushing,” said Bilirakis. Meanwhile, Bilirakis’ Orphan Products Extension Now (OPEN) Act — which also has been referred to the House Subcommittee on Health — would provide incentives for drug makers to repurpose mainstream treatments, at mainstream prices. According to Bilirakis, there are 7,000 rare diseases affecting 30 million Americans,

and yet 95 percent of those conditions have no approved treatment or cure. The bill, as it stands, amends the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to require the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to extend by six months the exclusivity period for a drug or biological product approved by the FDA when the product is additionally approved to prevent, diagnose, or treat a new indication that is a rare disease or condition (also known as an orphan disease). A common issue, Bilirakis explained, is those afflicted with rare diseases resort to off-label drugs for treatment.“We’ve got to find cures and treatments. We want to make sure it’s safe, we want to make sure we have a proper dosage,” he said.
Commissioners make connections at White House By Kathy Steele
ksteele@lakerlutznews.com
Pasco County commissioners Kathryn Starkey and Jack Mariano attended a special White House conference to promote communications between the state’s county commissions and federal agencies. The Florida County Commissioners’ White House Conference met on July 27, and included about 120 county commis-
sioners and staff from all over the state. It was the second in what is planned as a series of conferences to strengthen relationships between the Trump administration, federal agencies and local elected officials. The first conference was for Pennsylvania’s local governments. Starkey described the Florida conference as similar in purpose to Pasco County’s Citizens Academy, but on a much

And, there were visits with U.S. Reps. Gus Bilirakis, Kathy Castor and Charlie Crist. Starkey and Mariano headed to the conference with a list of priority issues for Pasco. Those included road projects, such as the new interchange at Interstate 75 and Overpass Road, the Ridge Road extension, veterans’ issues, coastal dredging, flood insurance and work force training. “We talked a lot about dredging and the need for flood maps,” said Starkey. An unfinished, 70-year-old dredging project near Sun West Park was high on Mariano’s list, according to a statement included in a Pasco County news release. Pasco began a new permitting process for the dredging in 2007. “Pasco County has a project ready to go, but we need federal approval for the dredge, so we can build seven boat ramps,” Mariano stated. “I’m hoping the President can help speed this project along.”

shorter six-hour schedule. The Citizens Academy is nine sessions over several weeks. “I think the visit was tremendous,” said Starkey. “It was a wonderful relationshipbuilding day. It can only be the beginning of a good working relationship between local officials and the White House.” The U.S. Secretaries of Labor and Commerce attended, as did representatives of other agencies, including the U.S. Department of Energy, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, U.S. Department of State, and senior White House staff members. Those attending heard an overview of each department and agency, their functions and the issues for which they can provide assistance to local governments. Contact information was shared, too. U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio was among the conference speakers.

Just in time for school: Healthy snacks By Betsy Crisp, MS, LD/N

chool bells will be ringing soon, and young minds will be gearing up to absorb new lessons. But, school isn’t the only place where your children can acquire knowledge. The kitchen in your home can be a great learning space, too. You can help your children think of it as a laboratory, and cooking can become one big tasty experiment. Depending on their age and ability, they can wash fruits and vegetables, cut them into pieces, and package and label them to have on hand to have as a snack when they get home from school. While they are learning about food safety and food preparation at home, you can also build on nutrition lessons they get at school. Keep in mind the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s MyPlate icon and the guidelines on how much to eat from each food group when you are planning and serving food. Healthy snacks including fruits and vegetables are an easy way to complete your daily plan to achieve a balanced diet. Growing young minds and bodies need fuel throughout the day to stay well, grow strong and be ready to learn. Healthy snacks keep them going between meals. Plan ahead to prepare the snacks and have them readily available. This will help your children make the right lifestyle choices now, and also later in life. The following guidelines will help: • Practice preparing the snacks with your children; as they become more proficient they can make them on their own. • Teach them to use measuring cups or the proper size of containers, to practice portion control. • Don’t overlook food safety. Wash your hands. Wash the dishes and wipe off the counter.
HOMEMADE PITA CHIPS/CROSTINI Ingredients: • 3 (7-inch) whole-grain pita breads (or 1 whole grain baguette loaf) • 2 Tablespoons olive oil Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 400°F. 2. Brush both sides of each pita round with oil, cut into wedges on a cutting board using a pizza cutter before putting on the baking sheet. If using baguette, cut into slices and place on the baking sheet in a single layer, and brush both sides with oil. 3. Bake in the oven until just golden, about 4 minutes per side. Cool before serving. 4. Use to dip into the hummus. Makes 20 chips. CUBAN BLACK BEAN HUMMUS (instead of the traditional chickpeas) Ingredients: • 1 (15-ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed • 2 Tablespoons tahini (sesame seed paste) • 1 clove of garlic, chopped • 2 Tablespoons lime/lemon juice • 2 Tablespoons cold water
Here are some practical snack ideas: • Trail mix. This is one of my favorites because it is so easy to make and doesn’t need refrigeration. Using a mix of whole grain cereals, dried fruits, and nuts will add more fiber to your child’s diet. If you want to go to some extra effort, you can portion and package the trail mix attractively, using snack bags and pipe cleaners to make butterflies. • Other easy snacks include hard-cooked eggs, reduced-fat cheese (cheddar, string cheese, etc.) and crackers, and peanut butter on celery, or apple slices, topped with a row of raisins. Most children (and adults, too) do not consume the recommended daily allowance of fruits and vegetables, so snacks made of these are a good way to fill in those missed servings

Put all the ingredients in the bowl of the food processor fitted with a steel blade and process until smooth. Now taste it. Does it need more lime or lemon juice? More salt or spice? If so, add it and taste again. 2. Using the spatula, scoop the dip into the serving bowl or lidded container. 3. Serve right away, or cover and refrigerate up to five days. Makes 8 servings. LEMON HUMMUS (Note: requires use of a food processor and parent supervision) Ingredients: • 1 can (16-ounce) chickpeas, drained and rinsed • 1 clove of garlic, peeled • 2 Tablespoons olive oil • ¼ cup lemon juice (or juice of one lemon plus zest) • 3 Tablespoons cold water • 1⁄2 teaspoon salt • 1⁄4 teaspoon black pepper Instructions:

1. Put the steel blade in the food processor. Add the chickpeas and garlic, and turn the processor on. Process until the beans start to break apart and the garlic gets chopped. 2. Add the oil and lemon juice, and process again. 3. Add the water, 1 Tablespoon at a time, until the hummus reaches the consistency you prefer. 4. Add the salt and pepper, and process until completely smooth. 5. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour and up to three days. Makes 1 cup. PARMESAN YOGURT DIP WITH VEGGIES Ingredients: • 2 cups plain, low-fat Greek yogurt • 1 small clove of garlic, peeled and minced • 3 ½ Tablespoons lemon juice (or juice and grated zest of 1 small scrubbed lemon) • 1⁄2 cup grated Parmesan cheese salt and pepper • 1 bag each: baby carrots and celery sticks (or other vegetables) Instructions: 1. Put the yogurt, garlic, lemon juice and Parmesan cheese in a bowl and mix well. 2. Add salt and pepper to taste. 3. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour and up to three days. Makes 8 servings.
make these treats. And, with practice, they can do it on their own. As with any new food, be aware that some people have food allergies. The eight most common foods people are allergic to are milk; eggs; peanuts; tree nuts (such as almonds, cashews, walnuts); fish (such as bass, cod, flounder); shellfish (such as crab, lobster, shrimp); soy; and wheat. When purchasing food, be sure to read packaging because these eight foods are now included in food allergy labeling, and they account for an estimated 90 percent of allergic reactions. As promised, it didn’t take long. Bureaucratic wheels are turning on a project to build office and industrial space at the master-planned community of Asturia, off State Road 54. Pasco County commissioners approved a 10-year, $7 million loan to HP Asturia LLC on July 11 to aid in getting the two-phase project started. Private investment in the project is pegged at about $26 million, according to county records. On Aug. 1, Pasco County planners and representatives of Aurora Civil Engineering scheduled a pre-application meeting to discuss “Asturia Industrial.”That is a first step before submitting a site plan and other documents for approval from the Pasco County Commission. “We’re ready to start this afternoon,” said Graham Mavar, in remarks to county commissioners at the July 11 meeting. Mavar is partner in leasing and development with Harrod Properties, which is developing the project. “We like to self-develop everything,” he said.“We like the risk side so we build speculatively, which a lot of people won’t do.” Mavar estimated construction would start by the end of the year. County officials said they anticipate completion in 2018. The first phase of development includes a total of 107,500 square feet of industrial space. Two buildings are proposed. One is 40,000 square feet, including an 8,000square-foot mezzanine. The second industrial building would be 54,000 square
feet, county records show. The loan agreement between the county and HP Asturia calls for the design, permitting and construction of the first phase to be completed within 24 months. Tampabased Harrod Properties Inc., is partnering in the development. The second phase of construction proposes a 128,000-square-foot industrial building, with the caution that plans could change.A future retail outparcel also is listed in the pre-application form. The industrial park is off State Road 54 in Odessa, about 1.5 miles west of Suncoast Parkway. The county’s loan will aid in design and construction of a northern spine road connecting to Tower Road from State Road 54. Funding is from the Penny for Pasco program. However, if certain goals, primarily related to job creation, are met the entire loan could be forgiven, essentially becoming a grant. The buildings will be built on speculation, without pre-signed tenants. County officials project up to 400 new jobs, with total salaries estimated at about $11 million. They also anticipate economic growth from the development to add about $32 million to the county’s gross domestic project annually. The loan agreement sets up the goals in phases. Once the new road is open to the public and there is a minimum of 80,000 square feet of industrial/office space, the county will forgive $4 million of the loan. Another $1 million would be forgiven on proof of 5year leases for the first buildings. Finally, the last $2 million would be forgiven at buildout, with additional leases, and total space of 200,000 square feet.

Much of what we think of as belly dancing has been shaped by its portrayal in scores of classic movies about the Middle East, like “Sinbad” and “Aladdin,” or perhaps by the opening credits of television’s “I Dream of Jeannie.” Some of those are accurate depictions of the folk dance, but many are just a bunch of tinseltown hokum.

At the American BellyDance Studio in Lutz you can learn numerous authentic styles, from traditional to fusion. ABS owner, Kandy Sinquefield, whose stage name is ‘Kadayif,’ has taught it for more than 20 years. “An ankle injury forced me to give up ballet because I could no longer do the pointe work, and that’s how I got into belly dance,” she said. Belly dance is an aerobic form of exercise that limits the impact on joints, so everyone can participate. Moreover, it promotes grace, confidence, self-expression, and enhances mobility and offers a great cardio workout to boot. Sinquefield is a registered nurse by trade, but has studied belly dance all over the world. She gives students safe, attainable goals for dance technique and exercise. Most of her ABS students are professional women like herself, who use classes as unwind time. Classes range from beginner to professional levels, and include basic instruction and specialization in styles such as Turkish Rom, Classic Egyptian, American Tribal, Tribal Fusion, and Gypsy. They even offer a few classes for children. ABS dancers are featured performers throughout the year at events like the Florida State Fair, renaissance festivals, local parades, various charitable events and several showcases held on site, in their 60-seat, theater space. Performers dance to traditional and nontraditional music as well. Kadayif works hard to promote a family

atmosphere at American BellyDance Studio. “Many of our dancers’ spouses help out during the shows with staging, lighting and concessions. The children’s classes kind of grew out their desire to participate after seeing their mommies practice and perform. It was really kind of a natural progression,” she added. It’s not all about belly either. ABS also features ballet, hip-hop and jazz classes, which are fused into the performances. SINKHOLE, from page 1A safety. He reassured the sinkhole is not active, based on information he’s received from geo-engineers and other experts. “We did anticipate that we were going to have potential problems (during cleanup),” Guthrie said. The widening temporarily halted cleanup operations and forced building inspectors to condemn five more homes, which show signs of foundation shifts and compromised structural integrity. The recent destabilization of the sinkhole was the first documented movement since July 19, when the perimeter widened by approximately 10 feet, after sand erosion just below the ground surface dried and collapsed into the hole. The sinkhole originally opened July 14 in the Lake Padgett community. Officials say that most of the sinkhole is about 180 feet wide. Its current depth has not been verified. On the day that the sinkhole opened, it engulfed the properties at 21825 Ocean Pines Drive and 21835 Ocean Drive. The five additional homes that have met the criteria for demolition are: • 21815 Ocean Pines Drive • 21814 Ocean Pines Drive • 3153 Canal Place • 21748 Ocean Pines Drive • 21845 Ocean Pines Drive Meanwhile, cleanup efforts have resumed. On July 31, the Pasco County Commission approved $1.3 million to remove the debris, eliminate the public health threat and secure the sinkhole site. Ceres Environmental Services, the main
debris removal contractor, worked throughout much of the weekend on cleanup and recovery efforts. On the afternoon of Aug. 5, crews began dumping truckloads of lime rock to stabilize one side of the sinkhole and create a slope, to remove floating debris via a small platform barge equipped with an excavator. A total of 125 dump trucks of uncrushed lime rock were brought into the sinkhole area, and five semi-loads of debris were removed from the site. Following debris removal and disposal by Ceres, EnviroWaste Services will begin removing contaminated water from the site, over the next several weeks. The county also may opt to bring the roadway leading to the sinkhole up to grade, to later be asphalted in. Guthrie said the “Phase 1” tasks will not be rushed, to prevent any injuries and further evacuations. “During this recovery process, we are going to be slow, deliberate, methodical in our approach, as to not get anyone injured,” he said.“If we have to slow down, we slow down. Speed is not of the essence here.” Following the cleanup phase, county administrators will “hit the pause button” to consult with the Pasco County Commission for the next phases. Possible long-term options range from leaving the sinkhole alone, to filling and repairing the sinkhole, or connecting it to a nearby lake. Estimates on filling the entire sinkhole would require at least 135,000 cubic yards of dirt. The entire mitigation of the sinkhole is expected to take several months. During cleanup, the county is deploying four safety officers to monitor the sinkhole. They will alert neighbors door-to-door if additional evacuations are necessary.

The commons area is getting a new look, as part of massive renovation project at Land O’ Lakes High School. The project’s design makes it easier to get around the campus.
MAKEOVER, from page 1A In addition to Walbridge’s crew, the school district has two inspectors onsite, Petrashek said, who will be monitoring code compliance and quality assurance. “With 1,700, 1,800 students — working on an occupied campus, even with the exceptional record that Walbridge has for safety and the protection of their staff and the students, it warranted having two people keeping eyes on this, coordinating with the school, the staff, the principal, to make this happen,” Petrashek said. The project’s $29 million price tag includes construction, furniture and equipment, permitting fees, design fees, relocating portables, fencing and other expenses. Petrashek said it wouldn’t be possible to do the project on an occupied campus without the close cooperation of Ric Mellin, the school’s principal. “Mr. Mellin has really been exceptional to work with on this project. He’s innovative. He’s taken the attitude,‘We do what we have to, to make this a success,’” Petrashek said. Some of the adjustments for the coming year include creative scheduling to maximize the use of classroom space. “The principal has figured all of that out,” Petrashek said. About a quarter of the school will be shut down at a time, Mellin said, noting parents did not want their children moved to a different campus or on any kind of split session. The school day has been changed from seven periods to six periods, and the break for lunch has been shortened to 30 minutes. Mellin said he thinks some people may have had the wrong idea about the scope of the project, perhaps thinking it was just a cosmetic update. It’s far more than that, Mellin said. “This is a tearing down walls to the bare minimum, redoing plumbing, electrical, upgrades to technology,” Mellin said. It also involves new walls, new floors and new ceilings, Graham said. “The restrooms will be brought up to ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act-com-
pliant. They’ll be completely gutted and refurbished,” added Petrashek. Doing such a substantial project while the campus is occupied requires a considerable amount of precaution, Petrashek said. Mellin noted that parents wanted to be assured that the air quality will be protected. Petrashek said the district will be on top of the issue.“We’re going to test on an ongoing basis, so we can respond,” he said. The project will add capacity, but involves little new construction. The school initially was constructed for 1,200 students. Over time, portables and additions increased its capacity to 1,700. At completion of the renovation, the capacity will exceed 2,000, Petrashek said. A five-classroom addition is being made to the science wing, replacing an area that previously was occupied by portables. “The other addition is the administration addition, which is going to be out front,” Graham said. That will be done in a later phase. “There’s going to be inconvenience every day that this project goes on,” Petrashek said. “But, anytime the contractors are doing work that is noisy, that will cause any type of disruption, they have to move that work to the swing shift, after school dismisses,” he said. The project also will require adjustments from students and staff, as classes are moved from one part of the campus to another. “Year two takes on a lot more classrooms,” Mellin said, noting,“we’re going to have to be a little more creative with our scheduling Year 2.” But, the principal hopes that by then people will have adjusted to the idea that the school renovation is a work in progress. The project must be completed by August 2019. Meeting that deadline isn’t optional, Graham said. “The seasons of the school are what they are,” he said, adding if construction crews run into some sort of delay, they’ll need to make up for lost time. “Sometimes we have to run two shifts. Sometimes we run Saturdays and Sundays — that’s the extra time we have available,” Graham said.

VISION, from page 1A plans to build a replacement bridge for the Howard Franklin bridge, which links Pinellas and Hillsborough counties. That bridge replacement will include four multipurpose lanes and two express lanes. But, the state roads department wants public input during the next two years for a new road project on I-275. The goal is to have plans ready by 2019. Based on reactions to Tampa Bay Express, residents are tired of focusing only on cardriven road projects, said Ed McKinney, planning and environmental administrator for FDOT’s District 7 office, in Tampa. Tampa Bay Next is meant to start conversations. “We’re not going to show you any projects,” McKinney said. “We’re not going to show you any plans…We hear over and over we need to be thinking differently. People who say that are absolutely right,” he said. Some of the trouble spots already identified in Pasco include the State Road 56 interchange on Interstate 75, the east/west corridor of State Road 54 and State Road 56, the intersection of State Road 54 and U.S. 41, and the lack of transit options. At the working group sessions, people divided into five teams that prioritized transportation needs. They also made organizational decisions for future meetings. As a group, they voted on priorities, based on a compiled list of recommendations from every team. Top priorities included: • Adding light rail, possibly on U.S. 301 and the State Road 56 extension, and more bus service to destinations and high traffic areas • Converting CSX rail lines for passenger service • Providing Bus Rapid Transit, or BRT, to serve the area The session also produced a longer list of traffic problems people want addressed. Requests and complaints included: • I-75 and State Road 56 – fix it • I-75 and Overpass Road – do it • State Road 54 and U.S. 41 intersection – fix it • Put multi-use trail on one side of State Road 56 extension and let it meander • More park and ride facilities • Extend Tower Road to State Road 589 and widen U.S. 41 – Yay Bexley! • Most of east Pasco is shoved onto I-75 • Too many (development) entitlements on State Road 54 • Plan for more recreational and bicycle trails
Once priorities were decided, Land O’ Lakes resident Jack George posed a question during public comment. “What is the end game here? What is the objective?” he said. “I haven’t heard that tonight and, without a goal, I don’t know how to get there.” McKinney said the state department of transportation planned a series of video “primers” to provide information on a broad range of topics, including how projects get funded. The primers hopefully will educate people on issues such as how projects are developed and funded, and allow for “longer conversations.” The videos will be posted online, McKinney said. Tampa Bay Next isn’t the only transportation initiative in Pasco. Kris Hughes, the county’s planning and development director, offered perspective on some ongoing efforts. For example, vision planning for State Road 54 and State Road 56 is entering a second phase, with a public meeting on Aug. 24 at 5:30 p.m., at the Pasco Utilities Administration Building, off U.S. 41. The county is partnering in that effort, while also completing a separate planning study in the area. Hughes also noted that new technology, including driverless cars, will be part of new development in the Connected City corridor in northeast Pasco. “This is a very complex, very intricate system of efforts,” Hughes said.

Cypress Creek readies for inaugural season By Kevin Weiss

W
ith the high school football season just around the corner, one school in Wesley Chapel is gearing up for its inaugural season. The Cypress Creek High Coyotes began practices last week, in preparation for its first regular season home opener on Aug. 25 against the Gulf High Buccaneers. The looming matchup brings intrigue, as it pits the upstart Coyotes against a Gulf program that has gone winless the last two seasons (0-20 combined in 2015 and 2016). Mike Johnson, the Coyotes first-year head coach, expects the opener to be surreal, for players, coaches and fans alike. “To be able to walk on the field for the very first time — that’s going to be a cool feeling for everybody,” Johnson said.“That first Friday night is going to be pretty cool. …Whether they (Gulf) break a long losing streak or we win the first game in school history, that’s going to pretty neat, whichever way it does go.” The Coyotes currently have about 40 players, enough to fill varsity and junior varsity teams; the varsity team will play in Class 4A for at least two years. The school’s first football team features no seniors though because only underclassmen from Wesley Chapel and Wiregrass high schools were rezoned to Cypress Creek. The school, located 8701 Old Pasco Road, will have nearly 1,500 students in grades six through 11 this year. For some players, like Logan Bercaw, switching schools was an adjustment. Bercaw, a junior lineman, spent the past two years at Wiregrass Ranch. “It was a little difficult,” he said,“because you started your first two years playing football at one school, thinking you’re going to finish there, and then you get switched out to a different school. It’s nice, because it’s a brand-new school, but it’s a pretty big change.” Besides Bercaw, much of the 2017 team is composed of freshman and sophomores. “We’re very young,” said Kevin LaChance, an assistant who coaches running backs and linebackers. “We’re just

trying to get something built, start laying a foundation…and to do the best we can.” With such a youthful roster, the Coyotes’ coaching staff spent much of the first week addressing basic fundamentals, such as safe tackling and blocking techniques, and focusing on running formations and ball protection. Learning a new playbook and hitting the weight room were emphasized, too. “We’re breaking it down to the very basics,” Johnson said. “All those basic fundamentals are really going to help them out in the long run.” Inexperience aside, the head coach is pleased with the team’s results in workouts and practices thus far. “We’ve been getting after it,” Johnson said. “They’ve come out and put in the work. I was very pleased with the amount of players we had out here and the effort they were giving. It’s definitely a positive.” The summer practices are especially valuable, considering most of the roster didn’t participate in the program’s spring drills — occupied with other sports and activities at their former schools. The early returns show the Coyotes have workable talent — particularly at skill positions. “I think we’ve got some speed, which I enjoy,” said Johnson. “We’re loaded at run-

ning back. I think we’ve got quite a few running backs/receiver types.” One of those is sophomore running back Keith Walker. The Wesley Chapel transfer made varsity his freshman year, and earned playing time in a crowded backfield that featured Dexter Leverett (1,249 yards on 165 carries), Malik Melvin (358 yards on 53 carries) and Ellrie Allen (117 yards on 23 carries). There, Walker flashed breakaway speed on handoffs (136 yards on 13 carries) and as a receiver (102 yards on four catches). The Coyotes also have found a viable starter at quarterback, in sophomore Jehlani Warren, a transfer from Wiregrass Ranch. “He’ll be able to run the ball a little bit, too,” Johnson said. Cypress Creek, meanwhile, marks Johnson’s first varsity head coaching gig. He previously coached at Stuart Middle School and served as an offensive line coach at Wesley Chapel High School, under former head coach Ben Alford. He believes he’s up to the task of leading a high school program. “I learned over the years the process of how to manage and how to handle (a team),” said Johnson, also a former defensive back at Division III Eureka College in Illinois. Cypress Creek offers multiple practice fields adjacent to its football stadium, as well as a Fieldhouse and state-of-the-art weight room measuring nearly 2,300 square feet. An island oasis, a day-trip away Worth the Trip Karen Haymon Long

aybe because it’s an island. Or, maybe because it’s close to home, but feels so far away. Or, maybe because Anna Maria Island lulls you with its watery beauty and makes you forget the world outside. Maybe, for all these reasons, this island is an ideal place for a day-trip. For years,Tampa families have escaped to their second homes on the island on weekends just to get away. Most were nothing fancy, white cottages an easy stroll from long stretches of sandy beaches. If they got up early enough, they might be the only ones on the beach for miles. Some modest cottages and little houses are still there. But, more and more have been torn down and replaced by much larger homes on the water, more often owned by out-of-staters than by Tampa Bay area locals. Many new and old homes are now vacation rentals, which gives the island a more transient feeling than ever before. That didn’t hurt the vibe, though, on our recent day visit to Anna Maria, the northernmost of the three cities on the island. (The others are Bradenton Beach to the south and Holmes Beach in the middle). It was enjoyable to watch other tourists like ourselves fishing and sitting on the city pier, riding bikes down the middle of South Bay Boulevard, or lining up for a first-come, first-served lunch at the popular Waterfront Restaurant & Craft Bar. Before noon, retirement-aged couples sat at picnic tables on the city pier chatting and drinking canned beer, while an older man fished from his wheelchair, using shrimp as bait. A little boy in a red baseball cap sat watching a sheriff’s boat with deputies aboard idling beside the pier.A young couple fished under the watchful eyes of hungry pelicans. On land, groups of families and lots of couples walked the beaches, rode rental bikes up and down narrow, sea grape-lined streets, and ducked in and out of shops. We enjoyed strolling past homes, some named: “After All,”“Serenity Now,”“Casa del Mar,”“Starfish,”“Three Palms,”“Manatee House …” A man on a bike wore a T-shirt that said “Island Bum,” an enviable statement on such a pretty day. No one seemed in a hurry. No one seemed the least bit interested in what was going on in Washington D.C., or anywhere else. A woman in a little shop called Just Beachy shopped for an Anna Maria Island Tshirt, but sounded conflicted about buying one or not. “I don’t want more people to come here,” she said.“I want to keep it our secret.” “Too late for that,” another woman said. Then they laughed. The secret’s long been out. But,Anna Maria still isn’t too crowded to make it stressful on an off-season weekday in May.Weekends, though, are another story. One of the best things about Anna Maria is that once you park, you don’t really need a car.Water - the Gulf of Mexico,Tampa Bay, the Intracoastal Waterway - are all an easy walk from anywhere inland. If you tire, you can hop on the free trolley, rent a bike or sit a spell in a cozy bar, cafe or ice cream shop. Or, you can shop in one of the local boutiques or gift shops. I particularly like The White Egret, at 10006 Gulf Drive, specializing in an array of coastal home decor and gifts, and its sister store,The Egret’s Nest, at 10010

Anna Maria City Pier is a popular place for locals and tourists, alike.
TIPS FOR THE TRIP HOW TO GET THERE: Anna Maria is in Manatee County. Once over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge on Interstate 275 South, take U.S. 19 south to south Tamiami Trail. Go left (south) on the trail, then go right (west) on State Road 64. When that dead ends at the beach, turn right on Gulf Drive, which leads to Anna Maria. WHERE TO EAT: We liked The Waterfront Restaurant & Craft Bar, at 111 South Bay Blvd., that offers indoor and outdoor seating and a dark-wood bar that serves 13 craft cocktails. Open daily for lunch and dinner. Visit TheWaterfrontRestaurant.net or call (941) 778-1515. We’ve also enjoyed eating at The Sandbar Restaurant, at 100 Spring Ave., on the Gulf of Mexico, a wonderful place for sunsets and grouper sandwiches. Call (941) 778-0444. Anna Maria has many other restaurants, cafes and bars as well. Find them, along with places to rent kayaks and paddleboards, at AnnaMariaIslandChamber.org.
The Waterfront Restaurant & Craft Bar offers indoor and outdoor dining with water views.
WHERE TO STAY: If you want to stay overnight on the island, there are lots of options - from homes to inns, motels and resorts. For listings, see VisitAnnaMaria.com. FUN FACT: According to legend, Anna Maria Island was named by a Spanish explorer for the Virgin Mary and her mother, Ann.
Gulf Drive, a high-end women’s and baby boutique. Both stores have friendly service and attractive gifts hard to find in chain stores. They’re also a fun place to eavesdrop on other visitors. “I wish I could move here,” one young shopper told the sales clerk.“My hair always looks so much fuller and better in this humidity than it does at home.” When the clerk asked where she lived, she told her,“Orlando,” which sounded funny, considering all of Florida seems so humid and muggy in late spring and summer. Many visitors head to the beach and stay all day, a smart idea, since it’s sometimes tough to find a parking spot. We drove up and down the beach-side streets and never found a place that didn’t require a local permit. Those who came early got the free, nopermit spots. We figured most people who aren’t staying on the island in one of the houses or at an inn or hotel must go to Holmes or Bradenton beaches to the south that both have large parking lots.
Anna Maria, the northernmost town on Anna Maria Island, offers picturesque views of Tampa Bay.
Anna Maria stretches along the Gulf of Mexico, drawing visitors during the day and later for sunsets.
We ended up parking in a free spot near the city pier and walked from there down the pier, then along Bayfront Park, a spit of beach on Tampa Bay. Then, we headed to lunch at The Waterfront Restaurant & Craft Bar, where we sat outside with a view of the bay. We had been before, and remembered the good food and watery views. This time, I had excellent crab cakes, loaded with lump crab, atop a tropical salad for $15. My husband enjoyed his carnitas, pork braised in orange juice and seasonings, and served on tortillas
with cheese, avocado, chimichurri and lime for $12. Another diner raved about her steamed mussels, $12. It’s such a peaceful setting, with kayakers gliding east and west, with the Sunshine Skyway Bridge as a backdrop. If they time it right, kayakers can paddle to Bean Point Beach to watch the sun set over the Gulf with others gathered there. Or, they can just paddle around, enjoying the green, tranquil waters of the bay and maybe even see a dolphin or two - all on island time.
Anna Maria City Pier, looming out into Tampa Bay, can be seen from this spot in Bayfront Park, a popular place to set up umbrellas and stroll the beach.

Hudson has a lot of love to give Hudson is a sweet, almost 5-year-old mixed breed. He has some basic obedience skills and loves to play. Hudson gets excited to see staff and volunteers, and sad to see them leave. He also shows he is very sad when you leave him at home, as Hudson has separation anxiety and has come back to the shelter a couple times because of it. Medication could help him manage his anxiety. The shelter is very stressful for Hudson, and he needs someone to help him work through his insecurities. Hudson is heartworm negative, neutered and up-to-date on vaccines.

Changes afoot, as school bells ring in a new year By B.C. Manion
bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com
School bells are summoning students back to classes in Hillsborough and Pasco counties — and some students will be attending classes on entirely new campuses. Sunlake Academy of Math and Science, a new public charter school in Hillsborough County, begins its inaugural school year on Aug. 10. It is located at 18681 N. Dale Mabry Highway in Lutz. Meanwhile, Pasco County is opening Bexley Elementary, at 4380 Ballantrae Blvd., in Land O’ Lakes, and Cypress Creek Middle High School, in Wesley Chapel. Students arriving at Land O’ Lakes High School will find reconfigured spaces, to accommodate a $29 million makeover. At Sunlake High School and Rushe Middle School, there will be a new traffic pattern for student drop-off and pickups, and at Wiregrass Ranch High, the school will be back to operating on a seven-period day. Those are just a few of the changes in store for the new school year, which begins in Hillsborough County on Aug. 10 and in Pasco County on Aug. 14. Some changes, which are state mandates, affect public school students in both counties. Other changes affect students at a particular school or within a specific county. For instance, the Pasco school district is revising its crisis plans to give students and staff a better chance to survive an active threat on campus. Meanwhile, Principal Vicki Wolin will lead the new Bexley Elementary School, in the Bexley subdivision off State Road 54, in Land O’ Lakes. That school was built to ease crowding at Oakstead and Odessa elementary schools. Bexley is also part of the school district’s

feeder pattern for the Aviation Academy at Sunlake High School. As such, Bexley will have drones, flight simulators and robotics. Its STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) lab is situated in its media center, which it calls its REC Center, which stands for Research, Engage and Collaborate. Cypress Creek Middle High School, at 8701 Old Pasco Road in Wesley Chapel, will serve students previously assigned to Wiregrass Ranch,Wesley Chapel and Sunlake high schools and John Long,Weightman and Rushe middle schools. Principal Carin Hetzler-Nettles, previously principal at Wesley Chapel High, will recognize many of the students streaming onto the campus for their first day. But, there will be many unfamiliar faces, too. The school has been hosting events ahead of opening day to help students get acquainted with the school and to find out what it has to offer. Cypress Creek Middle High will serve sixth- through 11th-graders its initial year and will add a senior class its second year.

B.C. MANION
Sunlake Academy of Math and Science, at 18681 N. Dale Mabry Highway, is opening this year as a new public charter school in Hillsborough County. The school, located in Lutz, will serve elementary and middle school students.
The new high school’s curriculum runs the gamut from ballet to digital design to American Sign Language. It offers several certification programs, including Microsoft Office, QuickBooks and Autodesk Inventor. Cypress Creek’s middle school curriculum includes Criminal Justice and Engineering academies, plus core classes. The new schools aren’t the only places where Pasco County students will have a chance for new experiences. The district also is expanding its Cambridge Programme to San Antonio Elementary School. And, Zephyrhills High School is adding a new academy of Building Construction Technology and Public Safety Telecommunications 911 certification for the Academy of Criminal Justice. A new public charter school also has opened in Pasco County, too, bringing the district’s total number of charter schools to 11. The new charter is called Pasco MYcroSchool and is located in New Port Richey. Besides new schools and programs, Pasco County also has shifted some principals since last school year and promoted an assistant principal to the top post:
• Principal Scott Atkins has moved from Sand Pine Elementary School to West Zephyrhills Elementary School. • Christine Twardosz has transferred from Centennial Elementary School to Sand Pine. • Gretchen Rudolph Fladd has moved from Veterans to Centennial. • Melissa Bidgood, who was an assistant principal at Watergrass Elementary, has been promoted to the principal’s post at Veterans. Parents wanting to know more about the upcoming school year should check out their school’s website. School websites can provide a wealth of information. They generally list important upcoming dates for school activities, such as cheerleader tryouts, booster club meetings, school spirit nights and parent-teacher events. The websites also often let parents know how they can get involved at school and how they can help their children at home. Most schools also have Facebook pages and Twitter accounts, and some post videos to YouTube, too. Websites maintained by the Hillsborough and Pasco school districts can also provide useful information, too.
