County continues tackling traffic issues

By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moore said there’s no specific solution in sight yet for congestion motorists face daily at U.S. 41 and State Road 54. But, the commissioner outlined a number of other projects underway that should improve mobility on the county’s roads.

Moore’s comments came during a soldout luncheon meeting of The Greater Pasco Chamber of Commerce on Aug. 13, at the SpringHill Suites by Marriott Tampa North, in Land O’ Lakes. There are plans for a temporary fix at U.S. 41 and State Road 54, Moore said, noting some turn lanes are being extended — which should improve traffic flow. But, the final plan to address that inter-

section is not yet known, Moore said. “We know something needs to be done, but,” he added,“funding obviously always is an issue.” Plus, there’s not a consensus on the best approach. “Do you use eminent domain and take out businesses? Do you do a flyover? We See TRAFFIC, page 15A

Using sewing skills to make a difference When feeling the pressures of life, Suze Swink, of Zephyrhills, often escapes by diving into her crafts. When she felt the need to do something more productive and purposeful with her skills, she helped co-create the fiber arts group, ‘Yarn for a Cause.’ The group, which now has five members, meets each Thursday at 6 p.m., at the New River Branch Library in Wesley Chapel. They crochet, knit and sew unique, and useful items to benefit a number of local organizations and causes. They work together on projects and do individual work, as well. Most of the materials they use to make pillows, linens and clothing come from donations. They upcycle materials into useful and functional pieces for people in need. The group welcomes new members of all skill levels. For more information, call the New River Branch Library (813) 7886375. At left, Suze Swink shows off a purse that she made by recycling a pair of denim shorts. The purses will be donated to the Samaritan Project of Zephyrhills, an organization that assists homeless individuals. At top right, while attending her first ‘Yarn for a Cause’ meeting, Joan Armstrong, of Wesley Chapel, examines two completed soap bags that will be donated. Armstrong recently moved to the area from Washington State, and was looking for an activity that would allow her to make a difference. After her first meeting, she said, ‘I think I’ve found it.’ At bottom right, Gerry Austin, of Wesley Chapel, enjoys chatting with other members of the group, during a recent meeting. The 86year-old is crocheting yarn to make a soap bag, that will help the homeless store bars of soap. Austin also makes beanie caps for children living in the village of Hewe, Papua New Guinea.

But there are concerns about impacts from rapid growth By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

Overall, Pasco County fared well in recent citizen surveys intended to help inform the county’s planning in its allocation of resources, and to improve its programs and policies. “This is what we call our voice of the customer,” Marc Bellas, performance management director for Pasco County, told the Pasco County Commission during a recent meeting. In terms of overall government services, the county scored above the national benchmark of 67%, Bellas said. “This is the highest rating we’ve ever had, since we’ve been doing this here in Pasco See SURVEYS, page 15A

When the North Tampa Bay Chamber began two decades ago, it was known as the Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce. In the beginning, it had 65 members and met in a garage. Now, it has 734 members — with some based as far away as Brooksville and St. Petersburg. It attracts a wide range of political and business leaders to speak at, and attend its monthly breakfasts and luncheons. The chamber also hosts numerous networking and learning opportunities each month. It frequently celebrates with businesses through grand openings and ribbon cuttings, too. Beyond that, the chamber seeks to help businesses as they navigate through government bureaucracy and learn about community organizations. They also act as an advocate on issues affecting businesses. “We’ve come a long way in 20 years,” said Hope Allen, president and CEO, during the organization’s breakfast meeting earlier this month. The chamber was born long before the

Cheryl Hinton hits the road in the quest to prevent breast cancer. Hinton, who is the marketing and promotions specialist for Tampa Bay Mobile Mammography, was the featured speaker at the East Pasco Networking Group’s breakfast meeting on Aug. 13 at the IHOP in Dade City. She talked about the company’s mission to provide convenient breast cancer screenings. The independent organization began in New Port Richey. It now provides its services not only in Pasco, but in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Polk and Sarasota counties, too. The staff works out of three tour-size buses, which are parked at various locations. Female employees, at those places, can step away from their work to undergo a breast cancer screening. “We actually go to schools and corporations,” Hinton explained.“We bring the bus to them, so that all they have to do is go outside, get on the bus, get their mammogram done, and go right back to work.” Inside the bus, women take several minutes to be examined, using a digital three-dimensional imaging machine. Patients also may be referred to a physician for further analysis. Beyond her current role, Hinton also has a history in community advocacy, having worked in conjunction with organizations like Meals on Wheels and The Samaritan Project. After she ended her career in newspaper advertising, she found a role where she could promote health. She recalled:“I see on Facebook that this position is opening and I thought ‘Mobile mammography, what’s that? That sounds interesting.’” The job also had a personal significance, as her sister-in-law had succumbed to a

seven-year battle with breast cancer. The Zephyrhills resident initially began overseeing operations in Hillsborough County and eventually added Polk County. “Part of my job is I sit [at] home on my laptop, contact the schools and let them know that we’re coming,” Hinton noted. She also travels to the companies and schools within her districts to answer questions from employers or employees. Mobile Mammography tries to accommodate educators by paying substitute teachers to cover their classes while they are in the bus for screening. The organization had its first summer screening program this year, sending out flyers and visiting 27 schools where summer classes were being held. The response was phenomenal, she said. Although the services target women in the school system and the corporate world, women of all backgrounds are encouraged to jump aboard the bus – and for good reason. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, breast cancer is the most common type found in women, not counting skin cancers . In 2016, there were over 245,000 new cases reported in the United States alone. The screening may seem intimidating and does bring about slight discomfort, Hinton acknowledged. However, she added, it could help prevent or stop the progression of breast cancer. Hinton also was quick to point out that while the disease is prevalent among women, men too, are susceptible to breast cancer. While Mobile Mammography does not offer services to men, it strongly recommends that men get routine check-ups, Hinton noted. Toward the end of the meeting, the East Pasco Networking Group presented Hinton with a Standing Ovation Award to recognize her for her community efforts.

EA encourages girl coders to ‘Get in the Game’ By B.C. Manion

Computer and video game industry facts

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

When Madeline Murch headed off for summer camp in late July, she had high expectations. After all, the Sunlake High student was one of just 15 young women selected to take part in a summer program presented by Electronic Arts Inc., a global interactive entertainment company. “Going into the experience, I had really high hopes for it,” said Murch, one of 57 applicants for the program. “It was just everything I hoped for, and more.” The young woman from Land O’ Lakes said she’s been interested in computers and gaming from a young age, and both her mom and her uncle know how to code. She learned about EA’s “Get in the Game” summer camp from her computer science teacher, Lea Weber, who sent the link to her. Madeline decided to apply for the weeklong camp that took place at the EA Tiburon studio, in Maitland. Since the campus doesn’t have housing, it wasn’t clear if Madeline would be able to go. But, her mom, Renee, stepped up — taking her to the camp. They stayed in an area hotel. “I just really thought it was a great opportunity that we couldn’t pass up,” Renee said. “It seemed like she’s always had an affinity for coding and gaming. I thought if she saw what went on at the studio, she might really like it and want to pursue that.” Besides, Renee added,“they’re (EA) leaders in video game development. So, there’s no better place to start than there.” EA, based in California, is a global leader in digital interactive entertainment. The company develops and delivers games, content and online services for Internet-connected consoles, mobile devices and personal computers. It has more 300 million registered players around the world. Madeline said a typical day at “Get in the Game” camp would include presentations and hands-on work. The presentations were interesting and informative, she said. “They were all on totally different topics,

which was cool. We got to see every single aspect of the video games,” the 16-year-old said. “During the second half of the day, we actually were working on developing a game while we were there. So, we broke into small groups, and we had a couple of software engineers who would help us every day. “Some days, we did more interactive things,” she said. For example, Madeline said she saw technology used to make realistic 3D renderings of people’s faces. “We got to play around with some of their motion capture technology,” she added. And, one of the artists they met, who gave a presentation on story-telling, had actually worked at Pixar and Disney Animation, she said. The week was enjoyable and inspiring, Madeline said.“I definitely think that I want to continue learning how to code, and I want to pick up another coding language. “I think that after this week at EA, I’d like to maybe be a software engineer,” she added.

REDUCING GENDER GAP Encouraging more young women to consider careers in the technology sector is precisely the point of the week-long summer camp, according to Daryl Holt, vice president and group chief operating officer of EA SPORTS Worldwide Studios. Holt came up with the idea for the camp, which began last year with 10 participants and expanded this year to 15 young women. Madeline was the only participant from Pasco County. Holt explained the motivation for creating the camp. “We were seeing a lack of gender diversity in those fields. That’s no secret,” he said. “We’ve got to solve the supply problem,” he said. The tech sector can’t rely on going into elementary and middle schools and giving a talk that might light a flame — to inspire young girls to pursue careers in these fields. “We’re not trying to ignite a spark, we’re trying to fan a flame,” Holt said. The program was designed for “young women who already had some exposure to coding,” he said. Applicants had to submit a teacher rec-

ommendation and an essay, explaining why they were interested in the camp. The essays played a big role in the selection process, he said. For instance, an essay writer might say something like:“I’m truly interested in this, and one of the things holding me back is that I don’t have access to a computer. I have to go to the library to do it (coding),” he said. Holt’s reaction? “Wow, here’s someone that is taking the extra step to do what they are passionate about and the way they’re having to do go about doing it, is certainly a demonstration of their dedication to it. “Not only can we fan that flame, we might be able to make it easier for them.” The camp aims to educate, entertain and energize the young women, Holt said. “Whether it’s at EA, or some other technology-based company, we want them to go on and do great things,” he said. “We want them to plan and we want them to train, but we also want them to dream and believe — because that combination is what will truly take them to the next level,” Holt said. While at the camp, the young women work with mentors and they’re invited to stay in touch with them after they leave. They also can earn the right to interview for an internship, and they get to take the laptop they’ve been working on home with them, Holt said. “Our expectation is that they have it in their power to do this, to follow their dreams in an educational pursuit. And then, we’ll be talking to them later about an internship that hopefully leads to a career,” Holt said.

Bexley Is Top-Selling Community In Tampa Bay

rospective homebuyers don’t have to travel far to experience one of the country’s best master-planned communities. Real estate advising group, RCLCO, has named Bexley by Newland the top-selling master-planned community in Tampa Bay, and one of the top 50 in the United States, in its annual survey. At Bexley, home sales are up more than 45 percent at the mid-year mark this year, compared to the same time last year. That is in comparison to a national average increase of 3%, according to the survey. “It’s always rewarding to see our community plans come to life,” said Pam Parisi, vice president of marketing for Newland. “Becoming the best-selling community in Tampa Bay is part strategic planning, part providing home designs for a range of buyers, and part incredible word-of-mouth from our Bexley families who are constantly sharing their pride in this great community.” Bexley offers a variety of floor plans from low-maintenance townhomes, to one- and two-story single-family starting in the mid $200,000s, as well as luxury homes, from some of the best-known builders in the country. Homebuyers can tour 11 models at Bexley, built by Cardel Homes, David Weekley Homes, Lennar, Homes by West Bay and Arthur Rutenberg Homes. Pulte will soon join the com-

munity’s list of builders, with the opening of its model home later this year. Del Webb Bexley, a 55-plus community, also offers an additional six model homes to tour. Located in Land O’ Lakes along the in-demand State Road 54 corridor, Bexley provides a prime location convenient to many of the area’s diverse attractions. At the heart of the award-winning

community is The Bexley Club, where people enjoy scenic lakefront views at the Twisted Sprocket Café. The restaurant is open to the public for breakfast, lunch and happy hour, and offers an outstanding menu of breakfast items, gourmet lunches, desserts, smoothies, wine, craft beer and coffee drinks. Next door to the clubhouse, Suncoast Trailside Bicycles sells a vari-

ety of bikes, gear and clothing, and offers repairs and rentals. If you’re looking to cycle around the community or hit the Bexley BMX pump track, you’ll find everything you need at this one-stop shop. Two additional buildings make up The Bexley Club: a cardio-focused fitness center and a screened-in game room with air hockey, foosball and a pool table. There are also two resort-style pools, an outdoor fire pit and an event lawn. Bexley was designed so that residents can enjoy the great outdoors. The community is home to miles of multi-surface Avid™ trails, ideal for walking, biking, jogging and strollers. Along the way, residents can utilize several Fit Stations, which add fun and variety to workouts. Several community parks dot the landscape at Bexley. Sports lovers of all ages use Mud, Sweat and Gears Park for impromptu soccer or football games, and younger kids spend hours on the custom-built wonderland designed by Asheville Playgrounds. Dogs and their owners enjoy the BarkYard, a park to call their own with separate spaces for big and small dogs. Best of all, Bexley offers an exclusive Resident for a Day program, which gives potential residents a chance to experience the amenities, trails and café first-hand. To learn more, visit BexleyFlorida.com, or call (813) 425-7555.

‘Wow’ Kitchen Makes New Model Top Seller For ICI Homes

n late June, ICI Homes opened its new Costa Mesa model in Asturia, and already it has become the community’s bestselling floor plan for this premium builder. “The reception to our new model has been overwhelming,” said Ron Ferguson, division manager for ICI Homes. “People absolutely love the huge kitchen and its extra-large island, which is a standard feature in this home. Plus, the model’s closet-size, walk-in pantry, that is cleverly hidden behind cabinetry, is a stand-out feature that everyone wants.” The Costa Mesa model overlooks a tranquil lake not far from the entrance to Asturia, an award-winning, master-planned community in Odessa, located one mile west of the Suncoast Parkway on State Road 54. Located in the community’s recently opened Phase III, this one-story home showcases 2,565 square feet of living area, with four bedrooms, three baths and a three-car garage. It is designed for all kinds of families — young professionals just starting out, those with young and school-aged children, and empty-nesters. “The Costa Mesa’s open floor plan is perfect for entertaining,” said Ferguson. “Its gathering room, gourmet kitchen and dining room are one expansive space highlighted by lots of windows that capture tons of natural light.” ICI Homes has a second model, the Serena, in Asturia’s second phase. This beautiful home has recently become available for sale, and can even include the model’s professionally decorated, high-end furnishings for families wanting a turn-key home that is ready now. The builder has 38 homesites available in Asturia’s Phase III, and a few remaining in Phase II, with many lots backing up to conservation and water. Prices begin in the

high $300s, which include the home, lot and design center options. ICI Homes has over a dozen distinctive floor plans to choose from, all which are easily customized. For families not wanting to build, the builder has several quick inventory homes available now or within the next few months. Amenities in this 550-home community include a unique trails system that winds through wetlands, parks and neighborhoods, and an award-winning Amenity Center that includes a zero-entry pool, contemporary community center and state-of-the-art fitness center.

COMING SOON WESLEY CHAPEL

The next ICI Home community in Tampa Bay will be in Wesley Chapel in the prestigious Wiregrass Ranch area. This new community will be called Persimmon Park, and is located behind The Shops at

Wiregrass, and south of the Estancia entrance off of Bruce B Downs and Chauncy Road. “This is our first project in Wesley Chapel, and we are very excited to be in this vibrant community” said Ferguson. “We will be introducing our first neo-traditional homes in Persimmon Park, with all-new floor plans that feature front porches, and garages at the back of the home.” Construction on the community’s infrastructure is underway, and model homes and sales are expected to open in the spring of 2020. ICI Homes prices are expected to begin in the mid $200s, with larger homes selling in the $400s. Persimmon Park is being designed as a walkable community with a downtown park and trails that lead to shopping and dining at The Shops of Wiregrass, to AdventHealth Wesley Chapel, and to neighborhood schools.

FINAL HOMES IN BEXLEY

If you’re looking for a new home

in Land O’ Lakes, this is the last chance to buy an ICI Home in Bexley, an award-winning community next to the Suncoast Parkway with thousands of acres of preserved wetlands, miles of recreational trails and unique amenities, including a bike shop and café. ICI Homes is building its final three homes in Bexley, all on large 70-foot lots. A Costa Mesa quick move-in home will be ready in September, and the slightly smaller Egret VII will soon be under construction. Both homes have very open floor plans with lots of windows and natural lighting. Since ICI Homes was established in 1980, the company has built over 4,000 single-family homes in Florida, including the Tampa Bay area, and has earned several prestigious awards for design and innovation. The sales center for Asturia and Bexley is at 2112 Secret Cove in Odessa, (813) 359-0264. Models are open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Local Ownership Keeps Customers Coming Back Special to The Laker / Lutz News

It’s the local ownership and management of Hudson Square Coastal Furniture that keeps customers coming back, again and again. “Our sales are up every year with very little advertising, because our customers are so pleased with the quality of our furniture and the service we provide. They come back on a regular basis to see what’s new, and tell their friends about us,” said Luther Moore, founder and owner Hudson Square Coastal Furniture and Mattresses. Moore opened his first store in Hudson in 2008, and followed up with a second store in Zephyrhills three years later. These two stores specialize on colorful, comfortable furniture that gives homes a contemporary, beachy, coastal look and feel. “Our furniture makes people smile and feel good,” said Sheri Weber, manager of the Zephyrhills store. “Our store is full of quality furniture that is perfect for Florida living, including smaller pieces ideal for apartments and senior communities.” Weber and her counterpart in Hudson, Dennis Payne, have been local managers since their stores opened, and also live in the community where they work. “The person who sold you will be the same person helping you if there is a problem,” said Moore. “We believe 100 percent in customer service, and that begins by having salespeople who work with you through the entire process, from purchase to delivery to returns.” Hudson Square is also known for its fair prices.

“We don’t run bogus sales, where furniture is marked up 50% or 60%, just so the retailer can then mark them down to a ‘sale’ price,” said Moore. “No business can sell their products for 50% off – they would go out of business! In my opinion, these sales are an insult to your intelligence.” Over 90 percent of Hudson Square’s upholstered furniture and mattresses are made in the U.S. “When we sell a mattress, you typically get a full warranty for all 10 years,” said Moore, who added that most national mattress brands pro-rate their warranties. Also setting itself apart from the chains is that Hudson Square customers can buy furniture and mattresses off the floor – something few chain stores allow. “Customers typically have to wait three weeks to three months for their furniture to be delivered. But not here — we can deliver as soon as a customer wants –even the same day,” said Moore. For customers wanting to choose their fabric, they can also place custom orders. Hudson Square has hundreds of fabric and leather swatches in every color and pattern imaginable. The store rounds itself out with a huge variety of unique home accessories that are always discounted 15%. Hudson Square Coastal Furniture is open seven days a week. “We invite folks to visit our stores and see for themselves the quality of our furniture and beds, our large selection of styles and sizes, and browse our inventory of fun accessories to complement your home,” said Moore.

Avalon Park West Brings The Arts To East Pasco

A

valon Park West and the Pasco Fine Arts Council are bringing art and cultural events, exhibits and workshops to East Pasco County through a new public-private partnership. This partnership kicks off in September with a series of art exhibits at the Welcome Center at Avalon Park West in Wesley Chapel, at 33613 State Road 54. The first event will showcase Suzanne Natzke, an accomplished watercolor artist and Pasco County resident. An artist reception for Natzke will take place Friday, Sept. 27 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., along with live music by Jared Violin. The public is invited to meet the artist and enjoy the music at this free community affair, and enjoy complimentary wine and refreshments. Natzke’s paintings will be displayed through the end of October in Avalon’s Welcome Center, and after her show closes, a new artist will be featured. A total of six artist exhibits are planned during the first year of the new partnership with Pasco Fine Arts Council and Avalon Park West, all hosted at the Welcome Center for East Pasco residents. “This partnership brings great opportunities to expand the arts to not only our community, but the entire east side of the county,” says Stephanie Lerret, senior vice president of marketing and community relations for the Avalon Park Group. “It is our vision to build Downtown Avalon Park West as the cultural and event center of East Pasco County.” The first phase of Downtown Avalon Park West is currently under construction, and is projected to open next summer. Included in the plans for Downtown is a dedicated Arts Gallery, that will be the permanent East Pasco home for the Pasco Fine Arts Council. “We’re very excited about expanding the presence of the Fine Arts Council to East Pasco County,” says Jo Baughman, director of the Council. “It will be thrilling to feature local artists and discover new artists through these events and educational opportunities, made possible through the partnership with Avalon Park West.” For Baughman, who has been involved in the Pasco Fine Arts Council for 22 years, and director for the past four, the invitation from Avalon Park West to work together accomplishes a long-held dream. “This has been a long time coming, and will be a tremendous help to the artist community and our patrons,” said Baughman. “It’s been really hard to service the entire

county without a location in East Pasco, and when Avalon Park contacted us last February and asked if they could partner with us, it was completely unexpected, and we were completely overjoyed!” The vision the leaders at Avalon Park West have for the arts in their master-planned community meshes perfectly with that of the Pasco Fine Arts Council. “We want to have art classes and workshops for our community, and a place to share artwork created by

students and adults,” said Lerret. “As it turns out, the Fine Arts Council has been providing these types of programs for years, and all they needed was a place in East Pasco to bring their programs and exhibits to our residents in Wesley Chapel, Zephyrhills, San Antonio and Dade City.” One of the first youth programs the Fine Arts Council will be moving to its Avalon Park West location is the Middle School Photography competition it hosts annually in

conjunction with Pasco County Schools. “This is part of our Kids In Arts program, and is a photography competition where students earn first, second and third place recognition in each grade level,” said Baughman. “We are so excited to now have exhibit space to share these photos with the public.” For more information on the artist schedule and upcoming events, please visit AvalonParkWest.com or PascoArts.org.

Over 700 Homes Sold In Avalon Park West

vex Homes and Beazer Homes are the exclusive builders in Avalon Park West, a 1,650-acre master-planned community in Wesley Chapel, located 7.5 miles east of I-75 on State Road 54. “We have built over 500 homes in the past five years, and 200 more are under contract,” said Stephanie Lerret, senior vice president of marketing and community relations for Avalon Park Group. “It is very rewarding to offer local residents affordable homes for first-time homebuyers, as well as luxurious, move-up homes for families wanting a larger home in a community like ours that offers great schools and so much to do.” Single-family homes in Avalon Park West start in the mid-$200s, and are built on a variety of lot styles, including conservation, corner and pond view. The final 40 lots are selling fast in Cypress Village — the first neighborhood built in the community. And, both builders are also building in the new Hawthorne Village neighborhood, with Avex Homes also offering the first townhomes in Avalon Park West. “Our builders have 13 inventory homes ready, right now, for quick move-in,” said Lerret. “We can get families into their new home before the holiday season begins.” Avex Homes are solidly built with rich architectural detail, and a traditional focus on front porches and garages behind the home, which are accessed through an alley or ribbon driveway. Its neo-traditional floor plans encourage families to wave at neighbors walking by, and to get to

know them and invite them inside their home. Avex has three inventory homes ready now that come with $7,500 in closing costs. Two quick move-in homes are the one-story Escambia at 1,832 square feet, for $257,010 and $258,890. A two-story home, the Alexander, is also available at 2,145 square feet, for $269,720. Avex Homes also is accepting presales for its new townhome series. Three floor plans are available, all with two-car garages at the rear of the homes. Square footage ranges from 1,608 to 1,834 square feet, with one of the three plans offering a master suite on the first floor. Presale pricing begins at $229,800. Beazer Homes wants homebuyers to know about its Choice Plans — flexible floor plan options that allow customers to personalize the layout

of the most commonly used living spaces for no additional cost. The ability to personalize a floor plan is a feature touted by many new home builders, but often comes at a hefty price tag. Beazer homebuyers don’t have this worry. For example, its Choice Plans kitchen options allow buyers to personalize their kitchen area based on predetermined options, such as an oversized island with a breakfast bar, in lieu of a separate dining breakfast nook, without any added cost. Beazer Home’s smaller series, the Bay Series, has limited opportunities remaining to choose a homesite and build a home from the ground up. Homes in this series start from $249,990, and range from 1,676 to 2,254 square feet, with 3 to 4 bedrooms and 2 to 2.5 bathrooms. Beazer’s larger series, the Gulf Series,

only has inventory homes remaining starting at $272,000, which also offer 3 to 4 bedrooms and 2 to 2.5 bathrooms. Beazer Homes has five inventory homes available now, with prices reduced up to $38,000 off. These move-in ready homes come complete with washer, dryer, fridge and blinds, so all a buyer needs to do is bring their furniture. Beazer is offering closing cost assistance on its inventory homes, as well as its to-bebuilt homes that currently have half-off design options. For complete details, visit the Beazer sales center, or call (813) 422-5549. Avex and Beazer model homes are open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m., on Sunday. Mattamy Townhomes Feature Island Kitchens and Spacious Lanais

C

armen Livingstone recently moved to her new townhome at Lakeview at Citrus Park and could not be happier with the quality of her new home, and the outstanding service she received from Mattamy’s staff. “Everyone was so helpful, and just wonderful to work with,” said Livingstone, who downsized from a 4,000-square-foot home in a nearby community. “I love that everything is brand new, and that I do not have to worry about maintenance or upkeep. Plus, this is a gated community, so I feel very safe and secure.” Livingstone bought the Marianna floor plan which, at 1,660 square feet, is the smallest townhome of five floor plans available in this 124townhome community. “My home feels so spacious, with an amazing great room/kitchen/dining combination, three large bedrooms and two baths upstairs, plus a half bath down,” said Livingstone. Livingston likes that all of her bedrooms are on the second floor. “I like having the bedrooms upstairs for the privacy, and because it gives me so much room downstairs,” said Livingstone. “While I am retired, I am healthy and active, and going up and down the stairs is good for me because it gives me exercise and keeps me moving!” Livingstone’s lanai, which stretches across the entire back of her home, is one of the favorite places in her new home. “My lanai overlooks a stand of trees that is great for bird watching, plus they give me privacy,” said Livingstone. “I love to garden, and my lanai is the perfect amount of space for my plants and to enjoy the outdoors.” Because Livingstone loves being

outside, another big draw for Livingstone is the community’s access to tranquil Gant Lake, where residents share a community pier for fishing, kayaking and paddle-boarding. “Just about every evening, I walk down to the lake and enjoy the magnificent sunsets from the pier,” said Livingstone. “And, in the morning, I enjoy coffee on my lanai — there is so much nature here to enjoy.” Lakeview at Citrus Park has re-

cently released a new building and has several quick inventory homes available beginning in the high $200s. Currently, Mattamy is offering an incentive of paid closing costs on select homes. In addition to retirees like Livingstone, residents include young families, whose youngsters enjoy the community’s tot lot, and professionals looking for an easy commute to the airport, the Westshore business district and downtown Tampa. Lakeview at Citrus Park offers one on the most convenient locations in the north Tampa area. It is adjacent to the Veterans Expressway, located just south of the Ehrlich Road exit at the end of Tom Fuller Road.

If Your House Floods, Don’t Wait To Call For Help

T

here is nothing as worrisome as coming into your home after being away, or waking up in the middle of the night, and finding wet carpets and standing water on your floors. “The first thing many people do is get out their shop vac, but the first thing they should be doing is calling a professional water extraction company,” said C.J. White, owner of the Stanley Steemer franchise in Lutz. “Using a shop vac is a bit like trying to save the Titanic with a bucket — all it does is delay the homeowner’s call for help.” It’s important to quickly get water extracted from a flooded area, because it doesn’t take long for water to find its way under baseboards, and then be absorbed by drywall. “Drywall is like a water wick that sucks up water as is seeps under your baseboards,” said White. “And, when water becomes trapped in your drywall, the lack of airflow and direct sunlight in the wall cavity create a perfect environment for mold growth once moisture is introduced to the drywall.” The most common reasons homes flood is because a water supply line leaks or breaks in the kitchen or bathroom, the A/C unit backs up, or the washing machine’s drainage hose jumps out of its outlet pipe. “None of these sources of water are ‘grossly contaminated’ and can all be easily resolved without further problems, as long as a professional extracts the water within 24 hours,” said White. “Unfortunately, many people wait three or four days before they call and, by then, the drywall is saturated and mold spores are beginning to grow.” White explains that what could be an inexpensive extraction job, can end up costing thousands of dollars by waiting.

“If you get the water sucked up before it gets into the drywall, it may only be an $80 to $100 job. But, if you wait, the cost increases tenfold, and this can happen in as little as 12-24 hours,” said White. White says when his crew walks into a house and there’s a musty smell, it’s already too late, which means the carpet and pad need to be thrown away, and the saturated drywall cut out and replaced.

CERTIFIED TECHNICIANS

Stanley Steemer complies with standards set by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), a nonprofit, certifying body, for the cleaning and restoration. For over 45 years, this organization has trained and certified experts to do the hands-on hard work

needed to clean up the mess left by water damage. The Stanley Steemer operation in Lutz has seven IICRC technicians who are certified to handle most kinds of residential and commercial flooding problems. Plus, every Steemer truck is equipped with a subsurface extraction tool that gets under the carpet, pad and baseboard to successfully extract water from small spills. “If the flooded area is limited to a 10 x 10 space, this extraction tool can suck up water from the carpet and pad so that it does not need to be replaced,” said White. “The cost is just $85, compared to thousands of dollars if you wait too long and the carpet, pad and drywall have to be removed and replaced.” As an IICRC-certified company, the first thing Stanley Steemer technicians

do when arriving at a job is access what Category the water is rated at, according to industry categories: CATEGORY 1: Flooding originates from a sanitary water source and poses no substantial risk from exposure. Within 48-72 hours, this water can deteriorate to Category 2. CATEGORY 2 : Water containing significant contamination and has the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if contacted or consumed by humans. Within 48-72 hours this water can deteriorate to Category 3. Examples include discharge from dishwashers or washing machines, A/C drain pan backups, or Category 1 water losses that weren’t properly resolved quick enough. CATEGORY 3: Grossly contaminated water that can cause adverse reaction to humans if contacted or consumed. Examples include sewage, toilet backups that originated beyond the trap, rising water from storms, and Category 1 or 2 water losses that weren’t properly resolved quick enough. “In a Category 3 water loss, the IICRC requires most affected materials be removed and replaced. This includes any wet carpet, carpet padding, drywall and baseboards” said White. “When this happens, we have no choice but to remove everything in order to ensure the health and safety of the home’s occupants,” said White. White adds that much of the damage that he sees is not due to the water itself, but from occupants of the home not responding quickly and appropriately. “The only thing that stops this from happening is by promptly calling a professional water restoration company,” said White. “We are always here to help you — please don’t hesitate to call us at (813) 996-2436.”

Park Square Homes Is New Builder In Asturia

ines, developer of the master-planned community of Asturia in Odessa, is proud to announce the addition of Park Square Homes to its lineup of premier home builders. “We welcome Park Square Homes to the Asturia family, because they have a good reputation and bring over 35 years of experience building quality homes,” said Lane Gardner, senior managing director for Hines. “We look forward to Park Square Homes offering its quality homes in the final phase of our community, which is currently under way.” Park Square Homes is a recognized leader in planning, design, development and sales of residential and resort-style homes. Every home is built with the highest quality products, attention to detail and exceptional customer service. Homebuyers receive a New Home Road Map to make the buying experience easy and simple, so they understand the process every step of the way. “Our commitment is to provide our homebuyers with an extraordinary home buying experience, keeping them informed and involved throughout the process,” said Laurie Tarver, vice president of sales and marketing for Park Square Homes. Based in Orlando, Park Square Homes has been building homes in Central Florida since 1984, and expanded into the Tampa Bay market in 2007. Park Square Homes joins Asturia’s other prestigious builders, David Weekley Homes, ICI Homes and Ryan Homes. All have quick, movein-ready homes available for families looking for a new home now. Prices in Asturia range from the $220s to $550s. Park Square Homes will be built on 50-foot lots, and prices are expected to fall in the middle range. Asturia is located on State Road 54, just five minutes from the Suncoast Parkway. It encompasses 500 acres of the former Behnke

Ranch, which under Hines’ vision and management, has become an award-winning blend of shopping, office space, luxury apartments, single-family homes and townhomes. Since Asturia opened three years ago, families of all ages and sizes have chosen this master-planned community as their new home because of its strategic location, beautiful lots and excellent schools. Many of Asturia’s homesites back up to long, wilderness views of wetlands, cypress trees and rolling ranch land. Wildlife is everywhere, and residents enjoy community trails and boardwalks perfect for bird-watching, and often catch glimpses of deer, gopher tortoises, racoons and other native animals, during an evening stroll or morning run. Outstanding schools are another top reason why families move to Asturia. Children attend some of the best schools in Pasco County, including Odessa Elementary, Seven

Springs Middle School and J.W. Mitchell High School. All three schools have received a minimum A or B school grade for the last three years. Setting Asturia apart from nearby master-planned communities is its manageable size of just 550 homes at build out, compared to thousands of homes and years of development in other communities. “We feel more like an established community of neighborhoods, than a sprawling development that will be under construction for several years,” said Gardner. “Our residents like knowing that the size of their community is set, and that our amenities have been designed to provide enjoyment without the worry of overcrowding.” Asturia is a friendly, walkable community that promotes a healthy, active lifestyle with its many trails, walkways, parks and recreational amenities. Neighborhood parks include a Kompan play structure,

Ga-Ga Ball court, dog park and open event lawns. Its award-winning Amenity Center has a zero-entry, resort-style pool, state-of-the-art fitness center and contemporary clubhouse. A low cost HOA and CDD are well worth the benefits of living in Asturia, with fees considerably less than other master-planned communities in Pasco County. Asturia has received several prestigious awards, including Best Mixed-Use Community from the Florida Home Builders Association. International developer Hines is known for its intelligent, ecologically smart design. It manages the community’s master plan with its high standards, which makes Asturia the most sustainable, eco-friendly community in Tampa Bay. Learn more about Asturia by visiting AsturiaFlorida.com, or call (813) 227-4148. Model homes are open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 6 p.m.

Protect Your Family If Your Power Goes Out

W

ith almost daily afternoon thunderstorms, and the busiest months of the hurricane season upon us, many local households are installing wholehouse generators to keep their family comfortable, safe and secure if their power goes out. “Families of all sizes and incomes are installing generators in their homes in case their power goes out,” said Miguel Silva, plumbing manager for Cornerstone Pros Air Conditioning, Plumbing and Electrical in Land O’ Lakes. “We are installing many whole-house generators every month, and will install even more units during the storm season.” Cornerstone installs Generac generators, the country’s largest and most-advanced manufacturer of backup generators that run on natural gas or liquid propane, and automatically activate when there is a power outage. “Experience matters when it comes to generators, because in addition to the install, Cornerstone is qualified to service and maintain these systems, which can have a life span of 30 years, if properly maintained,” said Silva. “It’s no different than maintaining your vehicle — generators must be serviced to ensure they work properly, and to protect the homeowner’s investment.” Because today’s technology is essential to most families, it is critical to have electricity to power these devises that families count on. “While you obviously need power to keep your lights on and fridge running, you also need power to keep your cellphones, computers and home security cameras going,” said Silva. “Plus, electricity is especially important if a family member has medical issues that require equipment needing power to operate.” A generator will prevent almost

all of the problems associated with power loss, including spoiled food, extreme temperatures, sickening mold, and no running water if a home is on a well. The American Red Cross recommends permanently installed backup generators, because they are a safer way to provide backup power to a home than a portable generator. “Because all generators emit carbon dioxide, an odorless gas that can kill, proper installation and venting is imperative for all generators,” said Silva. “Our technicians are trained to specify the safest location for a generator.” Because generators can be costly, Cornerstone Pros offers permanent and portable generators, and has low-interest financing in place to

make monthly payments affordable. “We want to encourage everyone who wants to protect their family’s health, comfort and safety to give us call,” said Silva. “We do everything possible to make a generator fit their budget and payment ability. Plus, we’re currently offering $150 off all generator installations.” Modern generators are compact, quiet and able to power some or all of a home’s electrical appliances, all at the same time. “Many people think of backup generators as giant, noisy units that can be heard all around the neighborhood. This is no longer the case,” said Silva, who adds that Cornerstone Pros pulls all the permits needed to install a generator. For homes with natural gas, Cornerstone Pros technicians do the

plumbing that ties the generator directly into the home’s natural gas line, so the homeowner never has to worry about filling a gas tank. Homes without natural gas require a propane tank, which Cornerstone Pros works with local contractors to connect. “Generators provide protection 24/7, whether your home or away, and turn themselves off when utility power returns, so there is no need to monitor the unit during an outage,” said Silva. “Plus, most models today offer Wi-Fi connectivity so, no matter where you are, you can monitor the status of your power and generator’s operations from a smartphone, tablet or computer.” Call Cornerstone Pros with your generator questions and to request a quote at (813) 990-0561.

TRAFFIC, from page 1A have a community that is split,” Moore said. “Our county staff is going to continue to work very closely with FDOT (Florida Department of Transportation) to come up with a viable solution.” Addressing the issue is important, he added, because the entire stretch of State Road 54 is going to get busier as the area continues to grow. “Do you look at Bus Rapid Transit? I’m kind of a fan of Bus Rapid Transit,” he said, but added he would like to see how Bus Rapid Transit has worked elsewhere. While there’s no definite solution for the U.S. 41 and State Road 54 intersection, the county is making progress in other areas, Moore told chamber members. The county is awaiting a federal permit to proceed with a project to extend Ridge Road, and Moore said he thinks the county is closing in on securing that. He also talked about other road projects that are underway or planned. For instance, plans call for widening U.S. 41 from Connerton Boulevard, north to State Road 52. Improvements also continue to widen State Road 52. Moore also noted that construction is underway on the Diverging Diamond, a project that is expected to ease congestion at the

SURVEYS, from page 1A County since 2009,” he said, noting the goal in the county’s strategic plan is to score 70 percent. “We believe in the next year that we’re going to be able to do that,” he said. According to the survey, 72% of Pasco residents rated the county as a good or excellent place to live. That’s up 5% over last year. Two-thirds gave the county excellent or good ratings for its customer services. In terms of the economy, Bellas said all of the dimensions are trending up. “That’s very good news in Pasco County,” he said. “Usually, employment opportunities and Pasco’s a good place to work have always been the very lowest, but you can see that we’re now trending upwards from 2014. That’s good news. That means that we’re moving in the right direction,” he said. Those were just some of the findings from the National Community Survey, which was conducted through the National Research Center Inc., in collaboration with the International City/County Management Association. The survey was developed to provide a statistically valid survey of resident opinions, regarding their community and services provided by local government. About 350 communities participate in the survey annually, according to Bellas’ presentation to commissioners. This year’s survey was distributed to 1,600 selected addresses in Pasco County, with 263 surveys completed, representing an 18 percent return rate. The results have a plus or minus 6% margin of error. In addition to the surveys that were distributed, the county conducted an online citizen survey, using the same questions. The county does the online survey primarily for comparisons, Bellas said. “It is not a statistically valid instrument, but we find the correlations between the two to be very, very close,” Bellas said. The online survey gives citizens who were not selected for the survey a chance to express their views. This year 1,748 citizens took part. Bellas said the survey looks at eight facets of livable communities: safety, mobility, the natural environment, the built environment, the economy, recreation and wellness, education and enrichment, and community engagement. “In our particular survey, for our folks, the three most important areas were safety, mobility and the economy,” Bellas said. “When we look at the Impact on the overall quality of life, safety is always at the very top. Safe neighborhoods, and safe and uncongested roadways — are No. 1 and No. 2. “The folks who took the survey consider these to be essential, or at the very least, very

Interstate 75/State Road 56 interchange. State lawmakers helped get that project built much faster than originally planned, Moore said. The commissioner also talked about a planned interchange at Overpass Road and I75. “State legislators helped us get $15 million toward that. It’s about a $70 million project. We’re allowing FDOT to control that project because they’re the professionals, and they know what they’re doing when it comes to design-builds. “That is moving forward now,” Moore said. He also noted that State Road 56 has been extended from Meadow Pointe Boulevard in Wesley Chapel over to U.S. 301 in Zephyrhills. “That is an amazing extension. “Now, we’re even looking at punching it (State Road 56) through, so it goes to (U.S.) 98, too,” he said, but that plan remains under discussion. Moore also touched on the positive impact that tourism has had in the county. “Tourism is booming right now,” Moore said. It generated an overall economic impact of $615 million in 2018, he said, noting the county had 965,000 visitors that year. There were 7,480 tourism-supported jobs, and tourism generated $156 million in wages.

important,” he said. Most of this year’s ratings were similar to last year’s, Bellas said. But, the county did see “some significant downward movement in the mobility piece,” he said. Regarding mobility, the people using Pasco County’s bus system gave it favorable marks. But, motorists were less complimentary. “There are some downward trends here, ease of car travel, specifically, traffic flow, traffic enforcement — those are some concerns for us, because they are downward trends,” Bellas said. There also are concerns about traffic congestion, light timing and speeding, Bellas noted. Sgt. Steve Gaskins, of the Florida Highway Patrol, said there are 24 troopers assigned to Pasco County. “We work everything in unincorporated areas of the county,” he said, noting “we had roughly 5,000 crashes so far (this year). We worked 85 percent of them with our 24 troopers. “We’ve had 55 fatalities in the county, this year alone,” Gaskins added. “One of our big issues is getting to people who need help, as quickly as possible,” he said. He also acknowledged concerns about speeding. “Speeding is one of the huge complaints that I get all of the time from residents across the county,” Gaskins said. If there were more troopers, they could be more proactive, Gaskins said. “We could do more activity to stem the tide of those crashes,” he said. Additional equipment also would help with speed control and enforcement, he said. Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moore asked how many troopers Gaskins thought were needed. “If I had a wish list, I would say 50,” Gaskins responded. Chase Daniels, of the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, said efforts are being made to identify problem areas for speeding, and in the development of enforcement action plans. Daniels also noted:“We are increasing our radar-certified officers.” In terms of mobility, both Moore and Commission Chairman Ron Oakley noted a number of recent improvements and projects that will be coming soon that they expect to create much better mobility across the county. Specifically, they mentioned the Diverging Diamond being built to relieve congestion at State Road 56 and Interstate 75; the recent extension of State Road 56 to U.S. 301; and work underway to widen State Road 52 and State Road 54. Other future projects that will be done in coming years include a new alignment for State Road 52 near Dade City and a new I-75 interchange at Overpass Road.

Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moore talked about the county’s efforts to address traffic congestion, during a luncheon meeting with The Greater Pasco Chamber of Commerce.

CHAMBER, from page 1A College’s Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch, Tampa Premium Outlets, and Cypress Creek Town Center. And, that’s not to mention the scores of subdivisions, schools, restaurants, hotels and small businesses that now make up Wesley Chapel and nearby communities. Over time, the North Tampa Bay Chamber has moved from the garage to an old flower shop to a storefront at The Grove, to its current home in Lutz. It has shifted direction, too,Allen said. “In 2013, the board of directors decided we were going to switch our focus from being ‘the parties, pageants and parades’ to the connector, the convener and the catalyst.” “It was scary for everybody. We went from a nonprofit organization that was robbing Peter to Paul, to a membership-based business organization,”Allen said. “We said we’ve got to stop what we’re doing with all these things, and really focus on the needs of our business community. “So, we went on a listening tour.We went around. We visited all of our members. “We said,‘What is happening with your business? What is happening with Wesley Chapel? How can we help?’”Allen said. The businesses responded:“They said we need somebody to be an advocate for our businesses, we need somebody to go to, when there’s an issue,” she said. The chamber stepped up to accept the challenge,Allen said. When someone broke a water line on State Road 54, for instance, the chamber set about to make sure it got fixed,Allen said. Now, the chamber fields all sorts of calls. “We know code enforcement now. I have his personal cellphone number now,” she said.

CREATING A STRONG BUSINESS NETWORK

“We’ve grown and evolved, and made ourselves important. We weren’t very important way back in the day, to the elected officials. We weren’t important to the region, as a whole, until everything started happening up here. Then, they were saying, ‘What is going on in Wesley Chapel?’ “We had built this amazing network of businesses and built this amazing network of community,”Allen said. In 2015, it combined with the New Tampa Chamber, keeping the Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce, but adding

a tag line: Serving New Tampa. “It was seamless,”Allen said.“We started to really grow.We started to really have the pulse on what was happening. “Businesses were coming to us and they were saying:‘We need this.’ “The developers would come to us, ‘We’ve got this land, we want to do something with it.’ Allen recalled that a man walked into the office, then at The Grove, seeking information about Wesley Chapel. He wanted to take a look around, so Allen took him on what she calls her first “windshield tour.” It turns out that he represented the hotel developer who built the Fairfield Inn & Suites, in Wiregrass, which opened last year — three years after that initial visit. The chamber often is involved in work that won’t come into fruition for years, Allen said. She credits the chamber’s board, ambassadors and members for the progress the organization has made. “What we have going on here is incredible. We all know it. We can feel it. This community is incredible. This business community is amazing. We support each other. We grow with each other. We cry with each other,” she said. She and her staff are committed to serve chamber members, she said. “We stand behind all of our members. We speak with one voice for our membership,” she said. In 2018, the chamber rebranded itself as the North Tampa Bay Chamber. “We didn’t leave Wesley Chapel behind, we just brought everybody into the arms of what is North Tampa Bay,” said Allen, who is passionate about the value that chambers can bring to communities. Across the country, she said,“chambers of commerce are having the conversation now, ‘Are we relevant? Do you need a chamber of commerce in your community?’” In her view, chambers “are here to serve a purpose, in every single community. “If you’ve seen one chamber, you’ve seen one chamber. “We’re all different. We’re all governed by our own board of directors. We all have our own programming that’s different. “We’re not in competition with other chambers of commerce. “If you can join every single chamber of commerce in the region, do it. Because you’re going to get something out of each and every one of them,“ Allen said.

Academy at the Lakes gets new softball coach By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

C

oming off back-to-back state titles, the Academy at the Lakes Wildcats varsity softball team will have a new face leading the successful program. Wildcats coach Diane Stephenson stepped down after the 2019 season to accept a position closer to her home at St. Petersburg’s Admiral Farragut Academy. A two-time Class 2A Softball Coach of the Year, Stephenson posted a 65-14 mark in three seasons with the Wildcats —steering the program to three straight district titles, three straight region finals and two state championships, respectively. Replacing her is Elizabeth Munn, a veteran prep coach from the Midwest who also boasts NCAA Division I coaching experience. The 36-year-old Munn spent the past three years as head coach at York High School in Elmhurst, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. She posted a combined 54-41-1, including a 28-14-1 mark and Illinois High School Association state semifinals appearance in 2018. Prior to her stint at York, Munn held assistant coaching gigs at Division I Stanford, North Carolina State and Northwestern universities, respectively, primarily working with outfielders, and strength and conditioning. She also was a head coach at South Suburban College, a junior college in South Holland, Illinois. Her college playing career likewise has taken a windy path, to multiple countries, in fact. Beginning at St. Mary’s University in Winona, Minnesota, Munn transferred to Queensland, Australia’s James Cook University, then finished her playing career as a walk-on at Indiana University. The blend of high school and college experience makes Munn an ideal fit for Academy at the Lakes, said Tom Haslam, the school’s athletic director. “Her resume is outstanding,” he said. “She’s done well, had success at a rather large suburban Chicago high school, and just all that good looked. “We think she’s going to do an excellent job.” he said. Munn arrived on Haslam’s radar after her York teams faced Academy at the Lakes in Florida spring break tournaments the past two seasons. Munn also was recommended as suitable replacement by Stephenson herself, Haslam said. Moreover, the Wildcats athletic director

said Munn’s coaching philosophy aligns similarly with the private school’s culture. Haslam said Munn embraced the school’s no-cut policy and its philosophy of encouraging players to participate in multiple sports and extracurricular activities. By the same token, Munn brings a winning mindset, the athletic director said. “She’s certainly not daunted about taking over a successful program. I think she’s ready for it,” Haslam said. “I think she’s structured and I think she’s organized, and I think she’s going to hold their feet to the fire about hard work and showing up and things like that…but, she also understands that it’s not a school where you’re going to have 75 kids go out and you cut all but 20 of them; it’s just not

that way here.” Munn, meanwhile, is poised to take the reins of a Wildcats program that has tallied eight straight winning seasons between Stephenson and former coach Jerry English (2011-2016). She recalled being impressed by the Wildcats program when her York team visited on March 27 — even though Gatorade Florida Player of the Year (and current University of Alabama freshman) Lexi Kilfoyl wasn’t pitching that day. Munn’s team ended up winning that game 15-2. Her team lost the previous year to the Wildcats, 3-1. She described the Wildcats program as “phenomenal” and “a powerhouse.” “They were a great team all-around, so

I’m really looking forward looking to developing and seeing these girls play together again,” Munn said, in a recent interview with The Laker/Lutz News. Munn likewise was impressed by Academy at the Lakes upon flying down for an in-person on-campus visit, meeting with various faculty and students. Munn will be teaching health/physical education at the school. “I felt like right at home, right away,” she said,“just because everyone makes you feel so welcome and that you’re a part of what they’re building there in that community.” Munn, naturally, is eager to trade in blistery northern Illinois winters for Central Florida sunshine. “Oh yeah, you have no idea,” Munn said with a laugh.“I’m excited to leave it in the past for sure. I see myself not moving back.” Munn said her initial focus in her first year will be building camaraderie and goalsetting, noting she’s been given some beneficial pointers from Stephenson along the way. “It’s not just one person, it’s the team,” Munn said.“You can have all the talents in the world, but unless everybody comes together to have that bond and team chemistry — that’s what really helps with building a team to win state championships. “Just bringing everybody together so everybody understands each other and communicates with each other, I think those things are really essential,” she said. That being said,Academy at the Lakes is headed for some rebuilding in 2020. Besides the graduations of Kilfoyl and outfielder Tristen Gittens, the program also could be without other names on last year’s 15-player varsity roster. Even so, Munn said she expects to be competitive,“being over .500, maybe more, depending on the talent we have coming in.”

‘Clear the Shelters’ is a howling success By Christine Holtzman choltzman@lakerlutznews.com

H

undreds attended the ‘Clear the Shelters’ event on Aug. 17 at the Pasco County Animal Services complex, 19640 Dogpatch Lane in Land O’ Lakes. The event, launched five years ago by the television media company NBC Universal, is a national pet adoption drive that aims to find forever homes for thousands of animals in need. Participating shelters nationwide either reduced or waived pet adoption fees. The Land O’ Lakes shelter, waived its fees for the third year in a row.The only requirement was the purchase of the appropriate licensing for the new adoption. Normally, adoption fees run $70 to $85 for dogs and $40 to $50 for cats. The fees include spay/neutering, vaccinations, microchip, heartworm testing for dogs, FIV and feline leukemia for cats. Spencer Conover, the assistant director for Pasco County Animal Services estimated that around 500 people would attend the event, looking for a new companion.

In just the first two hours of the event, 13 dogs and 7 cats were officially adopted. By the time the event wrapped up, there were 41 adoptions and 37 pending adoptions, according to Animal Services’ Facebook page. Leading up to the event, veterinarians, staff and volunteers worked diligently to make sure that many of the 254 available animals were ready to go to their new homes on the same day of their adoptions. Those that had not underwent the necessary spay/neuter or microchip procedure, will be placed on a short adoption hold (typically less than a week), until the requirements are met. Strays, whether they are runaways or abandoned, make up the largest population of animals in the shelter. Conover said the biggest challenge lies in the lack of microchipping, which is crucial in helping lost pets find their way home. A very low percentage of the pets they see have been microchipped, he said. Animals they adopt out are microchipped. For more about ‘Clear the Shelters,’ visit ClearTheShelters.com.

Petey, a large mixed-breed dog, greets visitors outside the Pasco County Animal Services building during the ‘Clear the Shelters’ event. He was picked up as a stray several months ago, making him a long-time resident at the shelter. Volunteer Rhonda Revels describes him as being good-tempered and loveable, and good with kids. He’s not so wild about cats and little dogs.

Nicole Whitley, of Lutz, stretches out to pet Anastasia, an active 3-year-old gray cat, as her 12-year-old son, Tovyah Whitley Jr., looks on. The pair was at the event looking at dogs, but warmed up to the idea of adopting a cat, once they visited with Anastasia.

Officially adopted and heading to his new home, Blue, a male mixed-breed dog, cannot contain his excitement, as he jumps and licks Frank Izquierdo. He and his girlfriend, Anna Chiacchio, of Lutz, are first-time pet owners. They were equally ecstatic to make their new buddy a part of their family.

A curious, mixed-breed female dog peeks out of her cage, as a crowd of people walk by.
