Chapel Boulevard and Collier Parkway. Commissioners voted 4-1 to approve the rezoning request, with Commissioner Mike Moore objecting vociferously. Attorney Clarke Hobby represented the A.G. Spanos Companies and the Aiken Trust on the request, which involves a 25.4-acre site, about 2 miles west of the interchange of State Road 56 and Interstate 75. Both county planners and the Pasco County Planning Commission had recom-

mended approval of the request. During the Planning Commission public hearing, Hobby told that board that A.G. Spanos Companies has built more than 100,000 multifamily Class A apartments across the United States during the past 50 years. The main access to the site will be from the intersection of State Road 54 and Oak See PROJECT, page 19A

Pasco administrator to retire in

By Kathy Steele

ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

Pasco County Administrator Michele Baker expects to be very busy over the next year and a half. She’ll be crossing off a to-do list, one by one, before leaving in 2017 to go on a lengthy road trip with her husband. The couple will hit the road with their recreational vehicle and their motorcycles, on a tour of as many baseball parks and national parks as they can squeeze into a year. “That’s been our dream,” Baker said, so letting her contract lapse in July 2017 makes sense. But, don’t expect a lame duck administrator. “There’s no kicking back here,” Baker said.“This isn’t me slowing down. ” Baker has told Pasco County commissioners she won’t seek renewal of her current two-year contract, which makes her

Anthony Derby is the Founder and CEO of Brew Bus Brewing.

Brewery aims to become Wesley Chapel ‘gem’ By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

If all goes according to plan, Florida Avenue Brewing will open in Wesley Chapel by next spring. It aims to become “a destination, a gem,” said Anthony Derby, the Founder and CEO of Brew Bus Brewing, located in Seminole Heights. Brew Bus Brewing and Florida Avenue Brewing are affiliated, but Florida Avenue Brewing is considered to be the company’s flagship brand. And, while operations will continue in Seminole Heights, the Wesley Chapel location will be called Florida Avenue Brewing and will be known as the company’s flagship location. The goal for the new Pasco County location is to create a place that people refer to as “a cool brewery,” Derby told those attending the North Tampa Bay Chamber economic development luncheon last week. “The project that we’re building now is going to be able to do 60,000 barrels (a year). It will be the largest locally owned brewery in the state of Florida,” Darby said. See BREWERY, page 19A

Beth Hibben Always Answers Her Phone

U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis has helped Pasco County Schools secure a $500,000 federal grant to help keep students and teachers safe. The funding is part of the STOP School Violence Act, which Bilirakis supported and which became law last year. Bilirakis advocated for Pasco to receive this grant after speaking with Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco, Pasco Schools Superintendent Kurt Browning, members of the Pasco County School Board, teachers and parents, according to a news release from the congressman’s office. The funds will be used to enable Pasco Schools, law enforcement partners, and mental health providers to facilitate multidisciplinary threat assessments while developing behavioral threat assessment teams to intervene and mitigate potential risks, the release says. Funding will build on current community engagement by supporting a dedicated school threat assessment coordinator and

A full-time realtor for 15 years, including the past five years with Charles Rutenberg Realty, Beth Hibben understands the importance of communication. When someone calls, she picks up the phone seven days a week, and never sends her buyers and sellers to an impersonal, automated message. “When people call me, I answer the phone, and it usually catches them offguard,” said Hibben. “I believe lack of communication is where things fall apart, and communication is my biggest strength.” Hibben carries certification as a member of the National Association of Realtors, and also as a Pricing Strategy Provider. “The Realtor certification means you have ethical guidelines for your business, and you also have continuing education to keep updated on the changing market,” she explains. As a Pricing Strategy Provider, Hibben has been taught how to price properties correctly. “Whether you’re selling or buying a property, I can research and come up with pricing for either,” she says. “I also have a certification in negotiations.” Specializing in homes in the $250s to $700s price range, Hibben is a one-stop shop for her clients, providing resources for a trusted title agent, home inspector, handyman, stager, and professional photographer. “It’s funny. I have people who move here, and I help them find a house, then I help them find a car, and I help them get a cellphone. There are all kinds of things that I do, above and beyond,” she said.

To help the homebuyer find his dream home, Hibben does a thorough interview. She identifies the client’s priorities— such as a good school district, gated or nongated community, HOA versus no HOA. She makes appointments to visit the homes that meet the client’s criteria. “Sometimes I work with people, and I’m their second real estate agent because the first one didn’t listen,” says Hibben. “We go out, and they say ‘all these homes are exactly what we told you we wanted,’ and I say yes, because I do my homework.” One of Hibben’s specialties is new construction, where her certification in negotiations comes into play. She negotiates on behalf of the homebuyer, as the builder rep is only representing the builder. “What I love about being a Realtor is when I’m working with buyers and they find the home that they want, they are happy and excited. And, when I’m working with a seller, I love getting them a good price,” she pauses. “It’s the biggest investment that you’ll make in a lifetime, and I take that responsibility seriously.” Hibben is proud to give back part of her commission to those whom she considers ‘hometown heroes” – firefighters, police, military and teachers.

certified juvenile criminal intelligence analyst. Pasco County Schools is the 10th largest, among the state’s 67 school districts. In the release, Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said "we want to thank Congressman Bilirakis for his leadership in protecting our children in Pasco County. “Funding for threat assessments is one of the best methods for prevention and to help a child in distress before they become a threat to others or themselves. “We look forward to further partnering with Pasco County Schools and Superintendent Browning on this important initiative,” Nocco added. Pasco County Schools is one of just eight school districts in the country to receive this competitive grant. Bilirakis also is the author of the PROTECT KIDS Act, which would provide additional federal funding for School Resource Officers in the nation’s largest school districts, such as Pasco, Hillsborough and Pinellas counties.

What’s Cookin’

It’s fall — that perfect time to enjoy squash By Shari Bresin Special to The Laker/Lutz News

Pumpkins seems to get all of the attention each Autumn. Pumpkin spice lattes. Pumpkin bread. Pumpkin pies. Jack-o’-lanterns. But, remember, pumpkins are just one kind of winter squash. You can also find many other varieties of winter squash in your garden or at your grocery store. There’s butternut squash, acorn squash, delicata, spaghetti squash and others. So, what are the characteristics of a summer squash versus a winter squash, besides the obvious fact that they are harvested at different times of the year? As the website Harvest to Table explains, the winter squash has a hard outer shell and firm flesh — prolonging its storage life, so it can last throughout the winter. Winter squash is best enjoyed roasted, stewed or baked. Meanwhile, the summer squash, such as the well-known zucchini and yellow squash, has a soft skin and moist flesh and can be eaten raw, steamed or sautéed.They won’t hold up as long and should be eaten within a few days. While the hard skin of the winter squash allows it to endure the cold, it makes it hard to cut. So, here’s a tip: Microwave the squash first, to make it easier to slice in half, or peel. First, wash the squash’s skin and dry it. Then, use a knife to carefully make a few slits down the middle of the squash, where you plan to cut it in half. Then, use a fork to poke some holes throughout to allow steam to escape. Then microwave for about 5 minutes. You’ll still need to put a little muscle into it, but it will help. Winter squash is more than just a comfort food. It is high in carotenoids, protein, vitamin C, vitamin B6, fiber, and the minerals magnesium and potassium, so enjoy the different types all throughout the season to reap the health benefits. With the different types of winter squash and the different ways to cook it, you should have plenty of variety to enjoy throughout the season. As a bonus, enjoy the seeds! I admit, I didn’t think much of squash seeds. When carving a pumpkin for Halloween, I always saved the seeds and then roasted them, but for some reason, I always discarded squash seeds up until recently, when I realized I was throwing away a perfectly good protein-filled snack. They are smaller than pumpkin seeds and don’t need as long to roast (about 15-20

Once you scoop out the seeds, save them for a crunchy snack, dessert, or soup or salad topping.

Butternut Squash with White Bean Soup Serves: 6 (as a side), 3 (as a main) Ingredients • 1 butternut squash, chopped • 1 medium to large onion, chopped • 2 cloves garlic • 2 to 3 thyme sprigs, leaves removed • 1 Tbsp olive oil • 2 to 3 sage leaves • 1 (14.5 oz) can white beans, drained • 1 quart broth (veggie or chicken) or water • 1/4 tsp nutmeg (optional) • Maple syrup, to taste (optional) • Creme fraiche or sour cream, for serving (optional) Instructions • Heat a Dutch oven over medium-high heat, then add the oil and then garlic. • Add the chopped onion, sage, and thyme leaves. • Sauté for about 3 minutes, tossing with a heat-safe spatula or wooden spoon a few times. • Add the butternut squash and drained beans, and pour enough stock /water to cover all the ingredients. • Cover pot with its lid and bring to a boil. • Once the soup boils, keep the lid on and lower heat to a simmer, and cook for another 15 to 20 minutes. • Remove the pot from the stove and let the soup cool down, uncovered, for about 10 minutes. • Then place the immersion blender in the soup, tilt at about a 10 degree angle, and puree at a medium setting. • Season to taste with nutmeg and maple syrup for a bit of sweetness. • Ladle into bowls and swirl in a spoonful of creme fraiche. Note: I also added kale (added last, not pureed) to give it more color.

minutes baked at 275°, or until they start to “pop”). And, get creative with them: In a bowl, coat the seeds with a tablespoon of olive oil and, instead of salt, try ½ teaspoon of spices, such as red pepper flakes, cinnamon, or garlic powder.

Planning Commission supports requested changes By B.C. Manion

Monday through Saturday. • Approved a special exception request by Kelsey and Jeremy Whitmer to operate a bed and breakfast on a 10-acre site on the north side of Hanlon Terrace, about 1,100 feet west of Bellamy Brothers Boulevard. The site contains a two-story residence. The applicants propose to use the mother-in-law suite as their residence and to operate the bed and breakfast out of the remaining area of the existing structure. The applicants also wish to host events inside the bed and breakfast. The applicants note that the property can accommodate up to 10 guests at a time and the farmhouse provides a unique setting for nightly accommodations. • Recommended the County Commission approve a zoning request by Amanda M. Bray, aka Simmons, to change the zoning from a mobile home district to an agricultural residential district. The 3.78-acre property is at the southeast corner of the intersection of Hillbrook Avenue and Westbrook Street. The item now goes to the Pasco County Commission for a final vote, which is scheduled on Nov. 5 at 1:30 p.m., in Dade City.

The Pasco County Planning Commission has given its stamp of approval for a number of requests that would affect property use in the central and eastern portions of Pasco County. The Planning Commission makes the final decision on special exception requests, but its decisions can be appealed to the Pasco County Commission. The County Commission has authority over other land use and zoning matters. At its Oct. 10 public hearing in Dade City, the planning commission: • Approved a special exception request by Gianna Mari Siervo Fragoso for a kennel for dog training on a 1.08-acre site on the east side of Boyette Road, about 650 feet north of Clearview Drive. The kennel, at 7242 Boyette Road in Wesley Chapel, will be used for dog training, boarding and breeding. Conditions limit use of the site to 30 dogs and specify that operating hours (open to the public) would be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.,

Help Bexley Celebrate Its 3rd Birthday!

ilestones are worth celebrating. In November, Bexley by Newland rings in being a part of the Pasco Community for the past three years! A lot has happened in that short period of time. Bexley earned accolades from Real Estate advising group, RCLCO, as the top-selling community in Tampa Bay and one of the top 50 in the U.S. It also has been honored with a host of national and regional awards. As Bexley has grown up, it has become a vibrant, planned community. Families don’t have to travel very far to enjoy Bexley’s outstanding amenities, which include resort-style pools, parks, fitness center, café, bike shop, BMX track, and miles of multi-purpose trails. Residents often share that what makes Bexley so unique is the closeknit, family feel they just haven’t experienced elsewhere. “Bexley is growing into the community we envisioned,” said Pam Parisi, vice president of marketing for Newland. “It’s truly a special place and offers something for everyone, especially those who are looking for an active, outdoor lifestyle, and greater connections with each other. It’s a wonderful community to be a part of, whether you're a family with kids, buying

Pulte, one of the nation’s largest homebuilders, offers three flexible home designs located near Bexley Elementary. Pulte’s homes allow for personalization and feature the company’s 10year protection plan warranty.

A NEW VISION FOR A 55+ COMMUNITY

Pulte is no stranger to Bexley. Last year, the company opened its Del Webb at Bexley 55+ active adult neighborhood near the intersection of Sunlake Boulevard and Tower Road. Presales for the community’s second phase of low-maintenance homes are expected very soon, with its sales center already open. Del Webb at Bexley’s expansive 17,000square-foot clubhouse is on track to open in early 2020.

your first home, or looking to downsize."

OUTSTANDING SCHOOLS

Bexley Elementary School opened within the community in the Fall of 2017 on 18 acres donated by Newland. The schools zoned for Bexley residents — Bexley Elementary, Rushe Middle School and Sunlake High School — are all A-rated by the State of Florida. Imagine School at Land O’ Lakes, a charter school just minutes from Bexley, also has earned top marks.

TOP-NOTCH NEW BUILDERS

This year, Bexley added two new partners to its outstanding list of homebuilders. Arthur Rutenberg Homes and Pulte Homes join Cardel Homes, David Weekley Homes, Homes by WestBay, and Lennar in offering a wide variety of single-family and luxury homes in the community. Custom homebuilder Arthur Rutenberg recently opened its Avalon model home at Bexley. Rutenberg homebuyers can choose from 19 different floor plans that were created just for the community.

NEARBY COMMUNITY COMFORTS

Bexley residents enjoy all the comforts they need in a growing town. The community has attracted nearby conveniences, such as the AdventHealth Emergency Department, a SpringHill Suites hotel, and a RaceTrac gas station and convenience store. Additional dining and retail areas are also in the works. In three short years, Bexley has earned many honors, but the best acclaim is from the hundreds of families who now call Bexley home, and are busy making memories that they will cherish for a lifetime.

Stanley Steemer Safely Cleans Area Rugs

T

here is much more than most people think when it comes to cleaning area rugs. CJ White, owner of Pasco’s Stanley Steemer franchise in Lutz, says while area rugs can be cleaned in the home along with regular carpet, the most thorough job is done at Stanley Steemer’s Area Rug Cleaning Plant in Riverview. “Due to the more delicate dyes, materials and overall construction of most area rugs, we are limited to only cleaning the surface of area rugs when in a customer’s home, said White. “But, at our Area Rug Cleaning Plant, your rug is cleaned using the specialized equipment that is needed to clean your area rug as safely and thoroughly as possible. Stanley Steemer has invested over $500,000 in equipment specifically designed for the deep cleaning of area rugs, in the Tampa Bay Area. In addition to their already stateof-the-art facility, this capital investment in equipment to clean area rugs is unmatched by any other carpet cleaning company in Tampa Bay. And, to make it easy for homeowners, White’s company will pick up your rugs, deliver them to the Area Rug Cleaning Plant, and promptly returns them once thoroughly cleaned. No matter what style of area rug you have — a woven rug made with synthetic fibers that costs a few hundred dollars, to a luxury woven Silk costing over $35,000, or an antique oriental rug that is a family heirloom, all are cleaned using Stanley Steemer’s specialized equipment and procedures. And, while sending area rugs to the Rug Cleaning Plant is more expensive than cleaning them at your home, it’s the only way to ensure the complete removal of damaging sand and soils, as well as odors caused by pet accidents. The end result is a clean, sanitary area rug with more vibrant colors that often makes your rugs look like new. Additionally, upon return, your newly cleaned rugs will be

thoroughly dried, so they can be safely placed on wood floors without fear of water damage. White has many customers who have their area rugs cleaned at the Plant that were not expensive to purchase, but match a home’s other rugs and dĂŠcor. “Often a particular color or pattern is no longer made, so it’s important to our customer that their existing rugs stay in top shape, because they match their home’s interior,â€? said White. The largest area rug Stanley Steemer has cleaned at its Riverview operation was 20 X 30 feet —the size of a 4-car garage. “It was massive, but our equipment handled the size perfectly,â€? said Mike Little, one of two highly trained technicians at the Stanley Steemer Rug Plant. One of the biggest advantages of sending your area rug to the Rug Plant is to ensure your rug can be safely cleaned. The more controlled environment and specialized equipment protects your rug from damages, like dyes bleeding, shrinking, and cellolostic browning. Every job is customized to the rug, and spe-

Our 5-Step Process 1. We start by running the rug through our industrial rug duster. This loosens and removes dry dirt, dust and allergens. 2. If you have pets, we apply a pet urine treatment to remove any urine odors. 3. Next, the rug is placed in an automated washtub. Here, paddles gently agitate the rug, and our patented cleaning solutions safely lift any dirt from deep within the fibers. 4. The rug is removed from the tub and gets a final rinsing to ensure no cleaning solution is left behind. 5. Lastly, the rug is dried in a large centrifuge and hung in a climate controlled environment to dry completely.

cific shampoos and additives appropriate for a carpet’s fiber are added to the water tank, which fully immerses the rug during cleaning. “And, if there is any bleeding, we have chemicals that control these excess dyes, so they cannot attach themselves to other fibers in the rug, explained Little.

Most rugs are picked up by White’s crew, cleaned by the Rug Plant and delivered back to the customer home within 7-10 days. “But, if someone needs a rug back sooner, we can turn them around within a week, said White. Because so many homeowners want their rugs cleaned before the holidays, White is offering his Pasco customers a 15% discount on all area rug cleaning at the Rug Plant, if the customer brings the rug to his State Road 54 location in Lutz. Advantage Real Estate Services is a full service real estate company representing both buyers and sellers of residential and commercial property primarily in Pasco, Hernando and Hillsborough counties. Property management division is looking to add additional properties to its rental program.

BUYING OR SELLING A HOME? Advantage Real Estate Services is a fullservice real estate company representing both buyers and sellers of residential and commercial property, primarily in Pasco, Hillsborough and Hernando Counties. Headed up by Broker Holly Ruhlig, whose family has been involved in the local real estate market since 1981, agents at Advantage Real Estate Services understand local trends, area home values, and are knowledgeable about area schools, roads and growth that impact buying or selling a home. “We have a diversified team of agents who live in our market, many having over 25 years of local real estate experience,” said Holly. “Our agents are experienced professionals who pride themselves on the highest level of customer service. The Advantage team shares these reasons to use a licensed Realtor for buying or selling your home.

1. EXPERT GUIDES: Whether you are buying or selling a home, it requires dozens of forms, reports, disclosures and other technical documents. A Realtor is a knowledgeable expert who helps you prepare the best deal, and avoid delays or costly mistakes. 2. OBJECTIVE INFORMATION AND OPINIONS: Realtor can provide local information on utilities, zoning and schools, and have objective information about each property. By understanding both your needs and search area, your Realtor can also point out neighborhoods you don’t know much about, but which might suit your needs better than you had thought. 3. MARKETING AND EXPANDED SEARCH POWERS: When selling your home, in addition to advertising your home, many prospects for a home sale come from a

Realtor’s contacts with previous clients, friends and family. Your Realtor will prescreen and accompany qualified prospects through your property — you never have to worry about allowing strangers into your home. A Realtor can help you find opportunities not listed on home search sites, and also help you avoid out-of-date listings that might be showing up as available online, but are no longer on the market. 4. NEGOTIATION KNOWLEDGE: A Realtor will look at every angle from your perspective, including crafting a purchase agreement that allows enough time for you to complete inspections and investigations of the property, before you are bound to finalize the purchase. 5. UP-TO-DATE EXPERIENCE: Most people sell only a few homes in a lifetime, and those sales typically have many

years in-between. Even if you’ve done it before, laws and regulations change. Realtors handle hundreds of transactions over the course of their career and are experts at what they do. 6. YOUR ROCK DURING EMOTIONAL MOMENTS: A home is so much more than four walls and a roof. And, for most people, buying a home is the biggest purchase they’ll ever make. Having a concerned, but objective, third party helps you stay focused on the issues most important to you. 7. ETHICAL TREATMENT: Every Realtor must adhere to a strict code of ethics, which is based on professionalism and protection of the public. As a Realtor’s client, you will receive honest and ethical treatment in all transaction-related matters. The first obligation is to you, the client.

Avalon Park — A Place to Live, Learn, Work and Play

W

hen families are looking for a new place to call home, they want a community where there is plenty to do. And, that’s why Avalon Park West in Wesley Chapel is one of Pasco’s most in-demand places to live. Things for families to do typically begin with amenities provided by the developer, and few communities offer the recreational activities found at Avalon Park West for residents of all ages. Just opened is an expansive second amenity center at the heart of the community, with a zero-entry pool, splash pad, spa, and picnic area. Avalon Park West families also enjoy a wide array of other amenities, including another swimming pool, tot lot, basketball courts, pocket parks with mini-libraries, dog park, and trails and walkways that will interconnect with its downtown that will be opening next year. And, when it comes to community activities, the Avalon Park Group provides a variety of fun events for its residents, and welcomes neighbors in surrounding communities to join in the fun. Ongoing monthly events include a Community Farmer’s Market twice a month, Movies under the Stars, food trucks and holiday celebrations. The next big celebration is Avalon Aglow, which celebrates the holidays with a huge community splash, including evening fireworks, on Saturday, Dec. 14 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Activities include pictures with Santa, bounce park, food trucks, vendors, community performances and fireworks at 8 p.m. “We are not just developers— we are building a brand new town with family events all year-long,” said Stephanie Lerret, senior vice president of marketing and community relations for the Avalon Park Group. “We’re bringing together everything a family needs to enjoy life today, and in the future.”

1,500 RESIDENTS

Already, 1,500 people call Avalon Park Home, and over 700 homes have been sold since it opened in 2012. The community will continue to grow over the next several years and, at build out, will be home to 10,000 residents residing in 4,400 single and multifamily homes. Avex Homes and Beazer Homes are the exclusive builders in Avalon Park West, and both have beautiful model homes open for tour daily,

with several inventory homes available now or will be in the next few months. Single-family homes start in the mid-$200s, and are built on a variety of lot styles, including conservation, corner and pond view. Final lots are selling fast in Cypress Village — the first neighborhood built in the community, and the first residents are moving into Hawthorne Village, the community’s newest phase. “It is very rewarding to offer local residents affordable homes for firsttime homebuyers, as well as luxurious, move-up homes for families wanting a larger home in a

community like ours that offers great schools and so much to do.”

DOWNTOWN CENTER

Avalon also offers residents places to shop and work in its downtown hub that will be connected to its residential neighborhoods by tree-lined streets, walkways and bike paths. Infrastructure construction began last fall on the first phase of downtown Avalon Park West, which will include two office buildings, two mixed use retail/residential buildings and a community park. “We’re building beautiful, multistory buildings with commercial

space designed for businesses our residents want close to home — restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, bars and entertainment, hair and nail salons, as well as activities like dance, gymnastic and karate studios,” said Lerret. And, unlike most subdivisions, Avalon Park West’s commercial area is not strip centers facing the busy road at the community’s entrance. “We are building a traditional downtown, with stores located inside of our community on the boulevard road leading to our residences, parks and schools,” said Lerret. “We are creating a town that spreads out from the town center connecting to individual neighborhoods — very much like the footprints of small towns found across America.” In addition to shops and markets, the community’s downtown area will have over 500,000 square feet of commercial space. The first phase of downtown Avalon Park West is slated to open at the same time that the expansion of State Road 54 is completed to become a four-lane road. Avex and Beazer model homes are open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m., on Sunday. For more information, stop by the Welcome Center at Avalon Park West, located at 33613 State Road 54.

Annie Harris Exhibits At Avalon Park West

C

olorful, flowing, impressionist-style paintings by New Port Richey artist Annie Harris are on display at the second art show being presented by the Pasco Fine Arts Council at the master- planned community of Avalon Park West in Wesley Chapel. The show, “Energized With Color,” also includes pottery by Denise Philbrook, and is open through Nov. 25 at the East Pasco Fine Art Gallery located inside the Welcome Center at Avalon Park West, 33613 State Road 54. The pubic is invited to visit this free exhibit, which is open daily. Annie Harris has lived in Pasco County for 20 years, making her home in the Sea Forest community in New Port Richey. Many of her paintings reflect her love of the water and beach, inspired by living on the Gulf of Mexico in Florida, and her summer home on Madeline Island that overlooks Lake Superior in Wisconsin. “I have always loved the water and the warmth of the beach, and many of my paintings are of nature and seascapes,” said Harris. “I like to use warm colors, and paint to show movement of the wind and waves.” Harris describes her style as modern and dramatic, and paints her subjects loosely, blending lines and colors together. Unlike many artists, she does not sketch her work in pencil before she begins to paint. “I just paint, and let the colors and motion flow,” said Harris. She has 35 paintings on display at her show at the East Pasco Fine Art Gallery — all watercolors, except for three acrylic works. In addition to

Sailing

beach and water scenes, Harris’s also is exhibiting still lifes, florals, children, animals, abstracts and nudes. Her favorite painting at the “Energized With Color” show is a self-portrait she calls, “Who I Am,” which is one of several stylized artworks on display. “Along with the energy of nature, I love to paint the excitement of the human form. Everything about my art is about energy,” said Harris.” All of Harris’ paintings at the exhibit are for sale, with most paintings priced between $200 and $300. “I want people to be able to afford my paintings, and price them so they sell,” said Harris. Before opening at Avalon Park West, “Energized With Color” was on exhibit at the Pasco Fine Arts Center in New Port Richey. During that three-week show, Harris sold 16 paintings, of which she donated 100 percent of the proceeds to the Pasco

Palms & Sea

Fine Arts Council. She will also be donating to the Council all proceeds from the show at Avalon Park West. Harris grew up in New Jersey as a middle child, with two sisters and a brother. She began painting when she was 10, because dyslexia made schoolwork difficult, and she gravitated towards the arts, where she excelled. “I had three very smart siblings who I could never compete with academically,” said Harris, “My mother encouraged me to discover my strengths through painting, and always supported my interest in the arts.” Harris went on to study art in college, and received her Bachelor’s Degree of Fine Arts from the University of Arizona. After college, she and her husband, Larry, lived in Minnesota for 25 years, spending summers at a cottage they bought on Madeleine Island, which the couple still owns.

After moving to Florida, Harris became involved in the Pasco Fine Arts Council, and has been one of its most active members. She is also a longtime member of the Florida Watercolor Society. The partnership between the Paso Fine Arts Council and Avalon Park West began earlier this year, with a goal to bring arts and cultural events, exhibits and workshops to East Pasco County. This is the first time in the Council’s 40-plus year history that is has had a location in East Pasco to host its exhibits and art classes. After Harris’ show closes, a new artist will be featured at the East Pasco Fine Arts Gallery, for a total of six artist exhibits during the first year of this new partnership. The next show opens Nov. 25 and features Rita Wilson in a show titled, “Thru My Eyes,” with a reception to celebrate her work on Dec. 13 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Be Wary of Companies That Don’t Specialize In Plumbing

K

nowing who to call when one of your home’s primary mechanical systems needs repair — plumbing, electrical and air conditioning — can be overwhelming with so many businesses advertising their services. Complicating your decision is that many A/C companies also offer limited plumbing services to install hot water heaters, a faucet or toilet. Unfortunately, most of these businesses only specialize in air conditioning, and when they add on limited plumbing services, they do not offer customers the full range of plumbers and installation crews often needed for a job. “A lot of A/C companies that add on plumbing services do not have the experience to take care of the entire plumbing needs of a home,” said Dana Spears, president and owner of Cornerstone Pros in Land O’ Lakes. “These companies like to flip water heaters when they do a new A/C install, but do not have the plumbing experience a customer thinks they do.” At Cornerstone Pros, its plumbing division is a stand-alone service department with 10 certified plumbers and three installation crews. Combined, this talented group has over 50 years of combined plumbing experience. “When it comes to a true plumbing emergency, companies that do not have a full-service plumbing department do not have the knowledge, or the right equipment, to properly do the job,” said Spears. “Don’t be tricked by thinking that all plumbers are the same. It takes many years of hands-on experience to be a master plumber. A sewer stoppage, whole-home re-pipe, gas lines install and other large projects require proper staffing that’s experienced and knowledgeable. These jobs can take up to five days, and having a qualified installation crew is essential for the job to be done correctly,” she continues.

The Plumbing Team at Cornerstone Pros.

Spears explains, many plumbing jobs require camera systems, sewer machines and industry-specific tools that most A/C companies do not own, because they are expensive to purchase and maintain. Cornerstone Pros owns this equipment and stays on top of the latest plumbing technology and tools. “When you call Cornerstone Pros, you don’t have to worry because we have you covered for everything from the basics to the biggest jobs for your home,” said Spears. “Our plumbing team has the industry experience to handle your job and fix it right the first time, no matter the task.” Cornerstone Pros was founded in 2006 as an air conditioning service company. It moved to its 4-acre site on Land O’ Lakes Boulevard in 2011 and, the following year, added plumbing services. In 2014, it expanded again with electrical services. In 2018, Cornerstone Pros built a

6,000-square-foot warehouse next to its headquarters on U.S. 41, to store air conditioning units of all sizes and stock high-demand service items for its air conditioning, electrical and plumbing operations. It also stocks tankless hot water systems, and portable and permanent generators, including whole-house systems by Generac. “Every morning our vans are fully stocked with everything our technicians need, which means on most calls, we are able to solve a customer’s problem on the first visit,” said Spears. “Our warehouse has allowed us to become a more efficient service operation and provide even better customer service.” Spears credits her company’s growth to its commitment to outstanding customer service, and also because its employees exemplify her company’s values. “We hire people who are genuine, honest, trustworthy, clean-cut, and live their life with good ethics and

morals,” said Spears. “Most employees are local people who live in our service area, and are very committed to their work and community.” The company has developed its own training program for employees to become certified in its trade areas. Over 20 employees have successfully completed these programs, receiving numerous industry certifications, and now work as highly skilled tradesmen. “We’re always looking for eager, hardworking men and women with a good attitude and mechanical aptitude,” Spears says. “We’re successful because we’ve built our business on reputation and trust, which begins by hiring great people.” Cornerstone phones are answered 24/7, and technicians are available around the clock, including weekends and holidays. Call (813) 990-0561 anytime, day or night. For more information, visit their website at CornerstonePros.com.

Reliable Options for Breast Care Patients By Deborah Bostock-Kelley Special to The Laker / Lutz News

In 2019, an estimated 268,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women living in the U.S. To reduce this sobering statistic, AdventHealth Wesley Chapel is using innovative diagnosis and advanced treatment options with state-of-the-art technology. All patients at the hospital receive noninvasive, 3D mammography that helps the radiologist see issues that were hidden in its predecessor, 2D mammography. “Three-dimensional mammography allows for better visualization of the breast tissue, and is becoming the new standard of care,” said Dr. Jahnavi Pastore, director of breast imaging at AdventHealth Wesley Chapel. “It is our standard practice to perform mammograms as a three-dimensional study because it offers a more precise evaluation of the breast tissue, and is particularly helpful in imaging dense breasts.” Dense breasts are more challenging for the radiologist to read in a mammogram, because dense tissue appears white in a black-and-white mammogram, as do tumors. For patients with dense breasts, Dr. Pastore recommends a 3D mammogram, even if a patient has had a recent 2D mammogram. A 3D mammogram allows the radiologist to review the study, and if any concern arises, allows the patient to quickly do a follow-up mammogram with contrast, or an ultrasound. Contrast-enhanced mammography uses an injection into the vein to increase the ability to see any abnormal breast tissue in the 3D mammogram. Using contrast makes any areas of concern light up in the mammogram, and helps the radiologist diagnose potential concerns. “The contrast is injected a couple of minutes before having a mammogram. If a tumor is sitting in the breast, it will take up the contrast and jump out on the mammogram against normal background breast tissue,” says Dr. Pastore. “This is not a routine study, but if we see something on the 3D mammogram for someone with dense breasts, a contrast mammogram may be recommended after a breast ultrasound. In addition, it can serve as an alternative for a breast MRI for patients with pacemakers or severe claustrophobia, who are unable to have a breast MRI,” she said. A third advancement at AdventHealth Wesley Chapel is elastography — a tool used as part of breast ultrasound imaging to measure the stiffness of a breast lesion.

“If something is particularly stiff compared to the surrounding tissue, it is of greater suspicion and could warrant a biopsy,” says Dr. Pastore. “Sometimes, cysts can be complicated in their appearance, and elastography can be a helpful diagnosis tool, plus it is noninvasive with zero radiation.” If a tumor is considered high-risk, or is determined to be cancerous and tissue removal is required, the hospital features new SCOUT technology. This technology places an infrared radar reflector the size of a grain of rice into the tumor before the surgery. The reflector emits a radar signal, which allows the surgeon to precisely locate and remove cancerous tissue during a lumpectomy or surgical biopsy using a probe hand piece. Dr. Pastore relays the story of a young woman who had a family history of breast cancer. She started traditional mammogram screening in her early 30s, and then tried 3D imaging with Dr. Pastore, which led to the discovery of a distortion in the breast. “There wasn’t an ugly mass. It was relatively small and subtle. We quickly got her in for a diagnostic mammogram, and with compression, the area stood out even more,” she explains. I did an ultrasound of that area and sitting in that tissue, exactly where it was on the mammogram, I saw a mass that was not visible on the 2D mammogram. I got her in the day after and did a breast biopsy, and it was positive for cancer. “She had a breast MRI to ensure there weren’t any other areas of cancer, and then went on to a breast surgeon who did a lumpectomy and removed that area. The 3D imaging allowed a young cancer patient to have a relatively simple course of treatment. If this had not been detected with 3D mammography, eventually it would have turned into a true mass, and could have required a more extensive and prolonged treatment.” Dr. Pastore says, “I am grateful to have the technology to do my job to the best of my ability. Radiologists know what to look for, but we are only as good as the tools that we have. To have this type of technology at my fingertips is fantastic.”

The Fall Brewfest for Hospice, an annual fundraising event to benefit Gulfside Hospice, raised a grand total of $28,000 to support hospice patients. Gulfside Hospice serves patients in Pasco County as a nonprofit organization, which means that no patient is turned away from needed care due to financial reasons. “The money raised allows our interdisciplinary team to ensure that everyone in Pasco County is able to receive the quality care they need,” said Linda Ward, president and CEO of Gulfside, in a release. Approximately 1,000 people attended the event to sample beer and wine from 23 different local breweries and wineries, as well as visit other vendor and sponsor booths. Entertainment was provided by Stonegrey. Activities included a “Cooler than Cash” cooler drawing, 50/50, and The Giving Wall.

The Florida Department of Elder Affairs (DOEA) has announced that Pasco County and Pinellas County have joined the Dementia Care and Cure Initiative to create more dementia-sensitive communities. According to a DOEA news release, there are more than 15,000 individuals living with probable Alzheimer’s disease in Pasco County, and more than 33,000 in Pinellas County. And, these figures do not include other forms of dementia, nor do they include the tens of thousands of families and caregivers dealing with the ramifications of the disease. “The Area Agency on Aging of PascoPinellas is proud to establish a Dementia Care and Cure Initiative Task Force to educate the community about dementia and related disorders,” said Ann Marie Winter, executive director for the agency, in a release. “This task force aims to create a more dementia-caring community, where those living with dementia, their families and caregivers are supported, and have access to help and local resources,”Winter said. The Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA) gives this short glossary of financial aid terms that students and parents should be aware of: • Conversion scholarship/loan.This type of scholarships requires students to provide certain services. If they don’t provide the service, the scholarship becomes a loan. • Cost of attendance. The total cost of one year of college: tuition, fees, room, meals, supplies, transportation and personal items. • Expected family contribution (EFC). This is the amount the student and family are expected to pay for the student’s education, based on a formula set by Congress. • FAFSA.The Free Application for Federal Student Aid must be submitted by students applying for federal and state aid. Visit FAFSA.gov, to apply. • Financial need. The difference between the cost of attendance and the EFC. • Institutional aid.The scholarships, grants and other financial aid programs provide by the college. • Verification. The process of making sure the information submitted on the FAFSA is correct. The federal government requires colleges to have certain students’ FAFSA information verified. Monsignor Robert Morris, left, and D. Dewey Mitchell bestow the presidential medallion on Jeffrey D. Senese, at his inauguration as Saint Leo University’s 10th president.

INAUGURATION AT SAINT LEO

In a Mass celebrated by Abbot Isaac Camacho, OSB, and a formal investiture ceremony, Dr. Jeffrey D. Senese officially became Saint Leo University’s 10th president, on Oct. 11. Senese made the Oath of Fidelity using the Douay-Rheims Haydock Bible, published in 1893, and was presented with the presidential medallion, which features the university’s core

values of community, excellence, integrity, personal development, respect and responsible stewardship. In his inaugural address, Senese looked to the future of Saint Leo — the promise of growth in the number of students served, the addition of new programs, the expansion of physical locations, and the creation of partnerships among universities.

PROJECT, from page 1A Grove Boulevard, an existing signalized intersection. The commercial portion is planned near the front of the property, to take advantage of the traffic light. Objections were raised to the proposed rezoning during the Planning Commission meeting by some neighbors in the Twin Lakes community, but no one objected during the County Commission’s hearing. “We got the consent of the adjacent homeowners and we did that by working hard,” Hobby said. The attorney said his client has been working with the neighborhood and with county staff to improve the project. The applicants agreed to provide a long access road to improve interconnectivity in the project, they reduced the height of the apartments and they created a large setback, Hobby said. The attorney also noted that the project fits in with the county’s vision for the South Market Area, which calls for higher density, mixed-use development clustered around existing arterial roadways. The idea is to avoid spreading out density like peanut butter, and instead create a true urbanized area, Hobby said. Planning expert Kelly Love, director of entitlement planning at Clearview Land Design in Tampa, also spoke on behalf of Hobby’s clients. “The plan is for the South Market Area to evolve from a suburban bedroom community development pattern, with inefficient utilization of land, to one which incorporates verticality, density and urban form,” she said. “The Aiken mixed-use amendment before you today, contributes to this land use evolution. “We’re trying to put the density, the mixed-use and the connectivity in an infill development, which has transit right at its front door,” she said. And, while Moore has consistently voiced opposition to the proliferation of apartments being developed in the State Road 54/State Road 56 corridor, Hobby said that a market study was done and it shows that Pasco County’s multifamily is not overbuilt. “Our overall renter percentage ownership compared to other suburban or urbanized areas is very low. We’re at roughly 22.5 percent; Manatee is at 27.8; Hillsborough is at 40. “So, we are way below everyone else.We are in a healthy market. There’s a demand there. We’ve got a great project. We’ve got a great builder,” Hobby said. But, Moore reiterated his objections. “It’s no secret about my disdain for the amount of apartment complexes that are going up along the 54/56 corridor, especially east of Collier Parkway up to Bruce B. Downs,” Moore said. “My concern is that what this board is doing and continuing to do, along with what previous staff members have done

SUNCOAST, from page 1A timated 32% traffic diversion from the State Road 54 interchange, Hannah said. Three alternatives are being considered for the Tower Road interchange. They are: • A tight diamond interchange:This would have closely-spaced and signalized intersections where the ramps would meet with the crossing road. The estimated cost would be $108.5 million. • A single point urban interchange:A signalized light would be placed at the center of the intersection of Suncoast Parkway and Tower Road, guiding traffic on and off ramps. The estimated cost would be $27.5 million. It also would have an approximately 3,700-foot space from the State Road 54 ramps to the south. • A partial clover leaf interchange: The Suncoast Parkway’s left-turn and right-turn ramps would merge with Tower Road heading upward in opposite directions, respectively. The ramps on either side, would form a loop on the north end of Tower Road before connecting again with the road. This would resemble an “M” shape. The estimated cost would be over $59 million. However, it would have a longer distance from the State Road 54 ramps. Hannah said the great distance would be beneficial. “The more distance and the more space

with the South Market Area, is you’re going to be very disappointed, 10, 15, 20 years down the road,” he said. He then rattled off a list of 13 apartment developments within a 5-mile radius. Moore also said the residents and business owners who live within the area “are sick and tired of apartments on (State Road) 54 and (State Road) 56. It’s a fact. I hear it all of the time.” When people come to Pasco County and head on State Road 56, they see apartments, Moore said. “The market might be good right now, but you’re saturating the market in that one small section. This county is big. It’s a very large county. If we keep putting them up in this area, we’re going to pay for it,” the commissioner predicted. He asked his colleagues to take another look at the county’s comprehensive plan and policies in its South Market Area to address the issue. “We’re rezoning and rezoning and rezoning, to allow MF (multifamily),” Moore said. “When is enough, enough?” Other commissioners appeared open to having a workshop session to take a closer look at the issue, but when Moore mentioned the possibility of a temporary moratorium until that can be worked through, he found no support. A temporary moratorium, Commissioner Kathryn Starkey said, would be “pretty drastic.” “You’re seeing all of this density here because the market needs it. We have 100 people moving to Pasco a day. Where are they supposed to live?” Starkey said. There are also people who are downsizing and people who can’t afford to buy a house, she said. Still, she added, “I don’t mind taking a look at it to see,‘What is that right number?’ “And, we purposely put density on the (State Road) 54 corridor to save us from sprawl, right, and to allow one day to support transit;” Starkey said. Commissioner Mike Wells said he agrees that the board needs to take a look at the issue. At the same time, however,Wells noted:“I think the market decides, not us.” Commissioner Jack Mariano said, “We were trying to avoid sprawl. Do I think that we’re getting what we thought we’d get? I will say, no.“ He thinks there are “way too many apartments. “I would much rather see us take another look at this. Condos would be a lot better. Fee-simple townhomes would be a lot better. I want people invested in their community,” Mariano said. Commission Chairman Ron Oakley agreed that the board should hold a workshop to take a closer look. At the same time, commissioners said they want to take a look at the county’s mobility fee incentives and discuss which categories should receive them. No date has been set for that workshop yet. we can get between the interchanges, the better the operations are, and the safer it is,” he pointed out. Currently, the most preferred alternative is the partial clover leaf interchange, Hannah said. There is one connection with the parkway that doesn’t seem to need long-term improvements, Hannah said. “When we examined the State Road 52 interchange, the operations here were operating pretty well.We expect the existing interchange to handle future traffic demand through the year 2045,” Hannah said. In addition to improvements to help motorists, Commissioner Starkey called for improvements to help bicyclists and pedestrians. “There is no way for the cyclists to get from one side of the Suncoast (Parkway) to the other,” she said.“We just have to find a solution for that.” Starkey suggested a flyover path where pedestrians and bicyclists would not need to contend with traffic. Jensen Hackett of the Florida Department of Transportation briefly took to the podium, noting that the transportation department would look into any potential routes. The Penny for Pasco program would provide funding toward a pedestrian-bicycle flyover at the Suncoast Parkway.

BREWERY, from page 1A The brewery wants to be a place where people gather to drink , to eat, to play games — such as bocce ball and cornhole — to listen to music, to watch sports, to celebrate special events, or to just hang out in the beer garden, he added. He’s excited about the possibilities. The brewery will operate in a 32,000square-foot building, formerly known as Sports + Field, at 2029 Arrowgrass Drive. “For us, it’s kind of a blank slate. We’re going to be able to do a lot of really cool things,” Derby said, noting he wants to incorporate the best elements of what he’s seen at breweries across the United States. The company is making a sizable investment. “Before we open the doors, we’ll have spent about $10 million on the project,” Derby said. That includes land acquisition, new equipment and building improvements. Over the course of the next five years, he expects the company to invest another $2 million to $3 million. There will be an open kitchen, and also a larger closed kitchen. Part of the brewery will have community seating, on a first-come, first-served basis — promoting a come-and-go vibe. And, a small space will be devoted to a more formal dining setting. There will be a private event space, too, accommodating about 100 seated guests, or between 150 to 200 standing, Derby said. That area will have three huge sliders that open to a private beer garden. Plus, a 3,500-square-foot outdoor beer gar-

den is planned, too. “We’re not building any new structures, but a lot of internal modifications need to happen,” Derby said. “We are painting the entire façade, almost a whitewash brick with a gray metal roof and then some red or burnt orange accents.” The entrance to the building will be moved. Glass is being installed, so guests will be able to see into the brewery from the outside, and also from the dining room. “We’re upgrading our water line from a 2inch to a 4-inch,” he said, to support brewing operations. Additional power is needed, too, so an additional transformer is being added. To preserve parking, they’re paving a roadway to enable valet parking for the special events area. On the brewery side, all of the equipment will be new, including its canning line, which will be imported from Italy. It will be able to do about 250 cans a minute, compared to the company’s current canning line that does 50 cans a minute. A grain silo is planned, on the State Road 56 side, to allow the brewery to buy grain in bulk. Besides getting the site ready for the business, the company also will be hiring about 50 employees. That’s in addition to its 53 current employees in Seminole Heights, Derby said. Jobs will include such roles as a lab manager, a general manager, an assistant general manager, an event coordinator and hourly employees, such as bartenders and servers. Plans call for being open daily, with doors opening at 11 a.m. Closing times will be set, as the business dictates.

Annual Hiking Spree features new trails, challenges By Kevin Weiss

Parks and trails for the 2020 Hiking Spree:

kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

H

illsborough County’s annual Hiking Spree is back, with some new twists, turns and challenges. The hiking extravaganza, now in its fourth year, encourages people to exercise, explore the outdoors, and experience nature through the county’s numerous parks and preserves. The 2020 Hiking Spree trail list features 24 trails at 21 locations throughout the county. Five of those parks sit within The Laker Lutz News coverage area: Carrollwood Village Neighborhood Park, Lake Conservation Park, Lettuce Lake Conservation Park, Upper Tampa Bay Trail— Lutz Lake Fern, and Brooker Creek Headwaters Nature Preserve. The Hiking Spree is designed to offer something for everyone from hiking rookies to seasoned outdoor enthusiasts. Hikers can walk paths near their homes, but also are encouraged to explore new terrain throughout the county. Here’s how it works: Hikers who complete at least eight trails between Nov. 1 and March 31, 2020 can earn a patch, a medallion for a walking stick or a dog tag. Hikers may repeat any trail twice for credit provided they occur on different dates. Participants may hike on their own, with a dog, with others or on guided park staff hikes. Most trails range from less than a mile to more than 4 miles, labeled from easy to strenuous. To captivate more daring hikers, lengthier trails ranging from nearly 7 miles to over 9 miles are new this year — at Alafia River Corridor Nature Preserve North and South locations in Plant City and Lithia, and Lower Green Swamp Nature Preserve in Plant City. Incorporating some longer trails was requested by Hiking Spree participants last year, said Hiking Spree program coordinator Chris Kiddy, who also works for the county’s conservation and environmental lands management division. Said Kiddy: “We’ve introduced a lot of people to hiking over the last few years with this, and some of the feedback we were hearing from last year was,‘Hey, I love this, but I’d really like some longer hikes.’” The Hiking Spree has shown to be a hit since introduced in 2016 by the county’s parks and recreation department. About 1,000 people participated in the inaugural year, growing to about 3,700 participants in 2018-2019. County parks and recreation officials this year are hoping for as many 5,000 participants. Kiddy has witnessed the surge over the years, as he gets trails ready each year and participates in the hiking challenge himself.

Lettuce Lake Conservation Park is included in this year’s Hiking Spree. It is one of 21 parks and 24 trails people are encouraged to try out this fall and winter.

He put it like this:“What we hear more than anything from people is that they’re just amazed by how many opportunities that they have to see nature in Hillsborough County. We have over a million people in this area and you kind of think that it’s just this huge, urban area, (but) we have these little hidden places all over the county that are just places you can go to escape and get in touch with nature.” While most parks and preserves and trails are rotated in and out of the Hiking Spree each year, a few locations are constants because of their popularity. That includes Lettuce Lake, one of the county’s most visited parks, at 6920 East Fletcher Ave., in Tampa. More than half of the park’s property lies in the natural floodplain of the Hillsborough River, consisting of a hardwood swamp forest. The remainder of the park consists of hardwood hammocks and pine flatwoods plant communities. Within the park is a 1.25-mile paved exercise trail and 3,500-foot boardwalk with an observation tower that provides scenic views of the Hillsborough River and the opportunity to see all sorts of wildlife, from wading birds and songbirds, to alligators. Kiddy said of the spot: “Pretty much everything you can possibly see in nature you see right there in that small area, I think that’s why people enjoy that so much.” Another hiking favorite is the 1.25-mile Singing Bluffs Trail at Edward Medard Conservation Park, 95256 South County Road 39 in Plant City. “That’s another one where you see a lot of wildlife,” Kiddy said,“and that one is also really cool and unique because it uses some old phosphate mines as part of the trail, so there’s some elevation changes on that trail that people seem to really enjoy.”

Organizers this year also have added a new adventure challenge called “Trail Magic.” Each week, hikers will be given clues and directions on the county’s social media accounts to locate a hidden “Trail Magic” spot on a trail and then become eligible for a free prize. The hidden spot will rotate between each of the designated Hiking Spree trails and will have signs showing off the giveaway you could win, once you locate it. Giveaways will range from hiking supplies to massage gift certificates. Kiddy said the concept derives from thru-hikers on the Appalachian Trail to describe an unexpected act of kindness or goodwill that lifts a hiker’s spirits. In that environment, it’s often something as simple as being offered a snack or drink by a passing hiker or an onlooker offering a hot meal and a shower at their cabin. “We just kind of wanted to play on that and approach providing some ‘trail magic’ of our own for the hiking spree,” Kiddy said. This year’s Hiking Spree will be celebrated with a kickoff party on Nov. 9 at 9 a.m., at Upper Tampa Bay Park, 8001 Double Branch Road in Tampa. The event will include games, nature arts and crafts, outdoor workshops, and classes on orienteering, knot tying, how to make your own hiking stick, and more.A variety of hikes will be offered, including a plant ID hike, birding hike, bug walk, and kids hike. Registration for the Hiking Spree is available at hcflgov.net/hikingspree. Cost is free, though there is a $2-per-vehicle fee to enter some parks. Also of note:The county is seeking volunteers to join its new Trail CATS (County Associated Trail Stewards) stewardship program, to help county staff maintain existing

I

t’s a season for trips to the pumpkin patch, kids dressing to go trick-or-treating and families passing out candy from their front porch, or from the trunk of their car. Local churches, libraries and schools got in on the act, and offered a variety of activities for all ages. In Land O’ Lakes, Harvester Community

Church hosted its annual pumpkin patch for kids to play in, and choose their favorite pumpkin to take home. San Antonio Elementary School in Dade City drew a crowd of people to its Trunk or Treat, where costumed kids got to trick-or-treat among Halloween-themed cars. And, at the Land O’ Lakes Library, families could carve, decorate and paint pumpkins, to celebrate the holiday.

Dressed as a lady bug, 4-year-old Marianna Hudgins, of Land O’ Lakes, paints on the finishing glittery touches of her scary pumpkin. The youngster attended the Pumpkin Fest at the Land O’ Lakes Branch Library with her ‘Yia Yia’ and ‘Papou’ (Greek for grandmother and grandfather), Katherine and Robert Frank.

Steve Yarbrough, left, and his friend, Javier Casillas, both from Land O’ Lakes, each hold a large pumpkin that they bought for their families. Both families met up at Harvester Community Church on Collier Parkway to purchase pumpkins for upcoming fall festivities.

Joe Massa, of Land O’ Lakes, left, watches as his 8-year-old son, Joey, helps use a power tool to cut open the top of their pumpkin, with Land O’ Lakes Branch Library volunteer, Fred Hoffman. Joey was hoping to make a ghost or a ghoulish-looking jack o’ lantern during the library’s Pumpkin Fest on Oct. 26.

After making their selections at the Harvester Community Church pumpkin patch, a group of kids from Land O’ Lakes carry their pumpkins back to their cars. From left: 11-year-old Bailie Yarbrough, 9-year-old Steven Yarbrough, 9-year-old Jacob Casillas, 6-year-old Mason Casillas and his twin brother, Jackson.

Seven-year-old Jillian Massa, of Land O’ Lakes, scoops out the guts of a pumpkin, as her mother, Carly, reacts. The duo was working together on carving and designing a traditional jack o’ lantern at the Land O’ Lakes Branch Library’s Pumpkin Fest.

PET PAWS A SAFE HALLOWEEN FOR PETS Each Halloween, dogs and cats, as well as other household pets, are exposed to too many sweet treats, changes in household décor, and altered routines that can be stressful. The four most common food-related Halloween hazards for pets are chocolate, overconsumption of candy, raisins and candy wrappers. According to the veterinarians at the BluePearl Specialty and Emergency Pet Hospital, pet owners should follow these tips to keep your pet safe: • Hide the candy and sweets. Sweets, especially chocolates, can cause pancreatitis and even intestinal blockages if ingested with the wrapper. Chocolate is one of the most toxic candies to dogs, so never leave trick-ortreat bags on the floor or on easy-to-reach surfaces like low chairs or coffee tables. • Keep pets away from the door. Depending on the neighborhood, the front door could open dozens of times for trick-ortreaters.This gives pets many opportunities

NEW! DROP OEFF CAR

to slip out and possibly get lost or hit by a car. • Microchip. Even if you take precautions, there is still a possibility your pet can get outside. Microchipping your pet will help ensure that your dog or cat is found and returned home. • Be careful with costumes. Pet costumes can impair movement, vision or air intake, so stick with something loose-fitting and simple. Costume embellishments, such as beads or snaps, can be ingested and lead to intestinal blockages and/or poisoning. Dyes and other hair-coloring products also can be harmful to pets even if labeled nontoxic to humans. • Throw away glow sticks and jewelry. If punctured or ingested, glow sticks/jewelry contents can cause irritation, drooling and foaming at the mouth. Pets love to chew on these, so discard them after use. Pet owners should remember that while Halloween can be an exciting time, pets are relying on their owners to keep them safe from the dangers that this holiday brings.

In the spirit of Halloween, Marisol Fontanez wanted to share this picture of crows she took at her home in Dade City, at the Blue Jay Mobile Home Park. Most people call a group of crows a flock, but it is more poetically known as a ‘murder of crows.’
