New brewery coming to Wesley Chapel

By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

A new brewery, restaurant and beer garden will be setting up shop at a former fitness facility in Wesley Chapel — with an expected opening in the first quarter of 2020. Anthony Derby, CEO of Brew Bus Brewing and the Florida Avenue Brewing

Co., located in Tampa’s Seminole Heights, said the planned additional location for his company is ideal for its needs. Derby said the brewery is one company, but owns two different brands: Brew Bus Brewing and Florida Avenue Brewing Co. “We’re not sure which brand we’re going to put up there (in Wesley Chapel) yet,” Derby said. If it hadn’t been for a relative, Derby said

he may not have become aware of Wesley Chapel’s potential. “My mother-in-law lives up there. I’ve been visiting up there, probably for the past three years, on and off, on weekends,” he explained. During those visits, he noticed the area’s rapid growth and was attracted to it. See BREWERY, page 11A

things to do? Congratulations to the Class of 2019! Seniors from Cypress Creek Middle High School made history when they graduated on June 5, becoming the first class to graduate from the high school in Wesley Chapel. But, these graduates were among thousands picking up diplomas from schools across The Laker/Lutz News coverage area. Whether they graduating from a small private school, from a large public high school, or a sprawling campus — these graduates have finished one chapter of their lives, and are onto the next. Above, many seniors displayed messages on their caps, reflecting a bright future ahead, during the inaugural graduation of Cypress Creek Middle High School. At left, graduate Jermyzhae Simmonsh proudly holds up her diploma, after receiving it from Cypress Creek Middle High Principal Carin Hetzler-Nettles. See more coverage on Page 1B.

Pasco administrator to retire in

By Kathy Steele

ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

Pasco County Administrator Michele Baker expects to be very busy over the next year and a half. She’ll be crossing off a to-do list, one by one, before leaving in 2017 to go on a lengthy road trip with her husband. The couple will hit the road with their recreational vehicle and their motorcycles, on a tour of as many baseball parks and national parks as they can squeeze into a year. “That’s been our dream,” Baker said, so letting her contract lapse in July 2017 makes sense. But, don’t expect a lame duck administrator. “There’s no kicking back here,” Baker said.“This isn’t me slowing down. ” Baker has told Pasco County commissioners she won’t seek renewal of her current two-year contract, which makes her

When it comes to construction activity on Pasco County roads, State Road 52 is a hotspot. At least that was the message that David Gwynn, secretary for the Florida Department of Transportation’s District Seven, delivered during the North Tampa Bay Chamber’s breakfast meeting. Gwynn briefed the audience on the state transportation department’s current and upcoming projects in Pasco, during the June 4 session at Pasco-Hernando State College’s Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch. “We’re trying to address some of our major issues we have in the transportation system in the region,” the transportation secretary told the crowd. “The State Road 52 Corridor is one that we’ve really put a lot of money into in the last few years, and we’re going to continue to do that in the near future.” Among the projects, the state DOT is widening State Road 52, from the Suncoast Parkway to the east of U.S. 41. That stretch will be expanded to six divided lanes. It is currently under design, with construction expected to begin later this year, Gwynn said. Heading from east of U.S. 41 to west of County Road 581 (Bellamy Brothers Boulevard), State Road 52 will be expanded to four divided lanes. State Road 52 also will be expanded to four divided lanes from County Road 581 to Old Pasco Road, with that project expected See ROADWORK, page 11A

With Pasco County continuing to experience massive ongoing growth and development, the county’s tax rolls are expected to increase at least 9 percent this year, according to Pasco County property appraiser Gary Joiner. Preliminary figures reveal that the county has already exceeded its tax roll from 2008, Joiner said, referring to before the economy tanked. The property appraiser’s remarks came during a speaking engagement at the Greater Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce June breakfast meeting. New residential and commercial construction make up the bulk of the increase, Joiner said, noting the county last year approved a record of more than 50,000 permits. The taxable value of homesteaded properties will not increase by more than 1.9 percent this year, Joiner added. “The great thing about that is, your home values aren’t outrageous, where they were in 2008. You’re not paying twice as much in taxes as you were in 2008,” Joiner said. Plus, the county’s growth is likely to continue, he said. Joiner expects Pasco to become Florida’s 10th largest county within the next 18 months, moving up a notch from its current ranking of the state’s 11th largest county. “We’ve always been known as a bedroom community and ‘Little Pasco.’Well, it’s not ‘Little Pasco’ anymore,” said Joiner, who grew up and lives in New Port Richey. While growth can be a “great thing” for the county’s economy, it’s important for affordable housing and infrastructure to keep up, Joiner said.

He put it like this: “We’ve got to do it the right way, and we’ve also got to build roads and infrastructure way before we put a subdivision in. I think that’s where we lack. I think we’re 20 years behind in that. We’ve got to work harder Pasco County on that.” property appraiser He continued, “I Gary Joiner hate to see where some of the subdivisions are going, being where we were kids we hunted and fished there. You hate to see them tore up and these large oak trees taken down that you’ll never see again.” Also on the subject of the county’s tax rolls, Joiner mentioned his office has made an effort to go after various forms of fraud, such as homestead fraud and agriculture fraud. Joiner said the office has put more than $60 million in taxable value back on the county’s tax rolls since he took over in early 2017, including collecting nearly $1 million in back taxes. “We’ve had our fair share (of fraud),” Joiner said. Joiner also told the audience that the property appraiser’s office recently replaced its mainframe computing system and has upgraded to a more user-friendly website. “We’re just working hard for you, trying to make a difference,” Joiner said. “We’ve tried to change a lot of things since I’ve gotten there — staff wise, productive wise, saving money.” Joiner also touched on the county’s onSee PROPERTY, page 11A

areas in the state, and actually the country, Moore said. He also added:“When I first came on as a county commissioner, one of the things we promised was we were going to make public safety one of our top priorities. I’m confident that we’ve done that, and we’ll continue to do that. Jackie Parker was one of many who endured the sweltering heat to join the occasion. She has been living in Wesley Chapel for more than 40 years and hasn’t had concerns about safety - knowing Station 13 is not far away. “The department here has been quick to respond to needs in the community, and they’re very efficient, she mentioned. In fact, Parker witnessed the building of the original station in 1979, recalling when the antique fire trucks used to be parked on residents’ yards. More Pasco residents will be put at ease when Wesley Chapel’s Station 38 will be opened late summer this year. The opening of the sister station will reduce Station 13’s coverage zone, enabling quicker response times, Cassin said. The occasion was marked with a traditional ribbon cutting ceremony. With scissors handy, Commissioner Moore and County Attorney Jeff N. Steinsnyder, joined Chief Cassin, as well as Chief Mark Spudie, Fire Marshal Karl Thompson and Deputy Fire Chief of Operations Mike Cassano in cutting a big red ribbon. In a closing remark, Cassin said,“It’s time now to make new memories and turn the page to the next chapter in our history. After that, those attending were welcomed inside for a tour and refreshments.

bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com

Wesley Chapel now has Pasco County’s second largest fire station, and the opening of Station 13 was celebrated at a ribbon cutting on May 30. The 9,400-square-foot station, off Old Pasco Road and Dayflower Boulevard, became operational several weeks before the celebration because the original station — which had been next to it — was torn down. Despite the blistering heat, a crowd of firefighters, county officials and local residents gathered for the event. The new station improves the county’s ability to respond to emergencies in the growing Wesley Chapel community. “The new station is much larger [and] able to accommodate more firefighters, explained Chief Scott Cassin, who oversees all county stations. “We were just maxed out over at the old station. It was too small for the growing community around here. The $3.5 million project was funded by the Penny for Pasco program. Station 13 has three drive-thru bays, which can accommodate five vehicles, including a fire engine, an ambulance, a tanker and a brush truck. Each rotating shift will be staffed by six firefighters, which includes one paramedic. A battalion chief also will be on duty. The station is designed to house 10 firefighters, each with their own bunkrooms. The station also has a physical fitness area and a kitchen. There’s also a storage space for equipment. And, there’s a sheriff’s substation. “The station is also environmentally friendly, energy-efficient and storm-hardened, which are all critical elements in

today’s infrastructure, the chief added. In addition to safety precautions, all vehicles will be hooked up to a diesel exhaust extraction system. With this, exhaust fumes will be vented out from the trucks to the outdoors. “That way none of that diesel exhaust is in the air that we’re breathing, Cassin said. Many in the community came out to celebrate the opening, including Cypress Creek Middle-High School Principal Carin HetzlerNettles and student Sam Mazzeo. “We have an incredible partnership with Station 13, Hetzler-Nettles said. “They are our responding station. The importance of the station’s proximity to the school was evident last year when

Raising money for children

Metropolitan Ministries was a recently featured charity at the Pasco County Tax Collector Mike Fasano’s offices. The organization is dedicated to providing families in Pasco County with food, shelter and educational programs, with the ultimate goal of helping families get back on their feet and to be independent. The funds raised — $8,463.32 — will be used primarily to help feed hungry children. National Trails Day draws a crowd

Bexley and Waterset, two Tampa Bay master-planned communities by Newland, celebrated National Trails Day on June 1. Residents and the public were invited to come and enjoy the miles of trails offered within each community. Participants who had walked, biked or run 5 miles or more at Bexley in Land O’ Lakes, or Waterset in Apollo Beach, could log their miles at the respective community’s welcome center. Approximately 300 people participated, and together walked or biked more than 1,750 miles. In Bexley alone, approximately 100 people walked or biked nearly 700 miles. Alyse and Matt Goolsby, residents of Waterset, were among those taking part.

A new state law will improve the flow of information from court cases involving abused and neglected children, who are involved in both dependency and delinquency cases. Guardian ad Litem volunteers are involved primarily in dependency cases, which means the children are in the legal system because they need a safe, permanent home. Delinquency cases deal with children who have been charged with committing a crime. Sometimes kids leave an abusive home and are placed with relatives or a foster family in another district. Some abused youth may later find themselves in legal troubles. “We have a lot of children who we call crossover kids,“ explained Mariela Ollsen, director for the Sixth Judicial Circuit for the Guardian ad Litem program. “What this is going to do is allow our volunteer to be a part of those crucial stages in the delinquency so that they know what’s happening.” Guardian ad Litem pushed for a better flow of information and the program’s voice was heard. The new law requires that pertinent information about the child be shared in both cases – even when each is held in different circuits or counties. The new law received overwhelming bipartisan support in Tallahassee. Under the new law, Guardian ad Litem volunteers and attorneys can now present dependency matters before a delinquency judge in order to provide a broader picture of the child’s situation – which they hope will result in a ruling that’s in the child’s best interest. Because of child-attorney confidentiality, a Guardian volunteer may not be privy to all information. But, based on the trusting relationship with the child, the volunteer can still speak in the child’s favor. The Department of Juvenile Justice also will be required to notify the dependency court of any updates, such as a youth being transferred to another juvenile justice facility. “You have two different circuits who are trying to make decisions based on the same

child,” Ollsen said. She also noted that the Sixth Judicial Circuit was already one step ahead because it has attorneys that advocate for the youth in both court cases and has “unified family court systems, so one judge listens to everything involving the child.” Now, the program can better advocate on a child’s behalf throughout Florida’s 20 circuit courts – some of which oversee multiple counties. The legislation also allows guardianship over youth to be granted either in the district where the dependency case occurred, or the district where the child lives. Before the new law, guardianship could only be filed where the child was currently living. The new measure also allows guardians to be assigned in either districts to youth deemed as ‘incapacitated.’ These are young folks who have reached age 18 but may need help managing finances or daily routines. The new law will help Guardian ad Litem in its efforts to find a safe, permanent home for children, Ollsen said. “We want them to have a better future. The best way to do that is making sure that everybody has the information necessary,” Ollsen said.

TWO CONVENIENT LLO OCA ATTIONS

Six Pasco schools awarded ArtssFirst grants Six Pasco schools have received ArrtsFirst grants for the spring quarter: Calusa Elementary, Moon Lake Elementary, Denham Oaks Elementary, New River Elementary, Pine View Middle and Gulff Middle School. A t Fi t grants ArtsFirst t are used d to t fund f d programs that enhance teaching fine arts in the classroom. It is a public-private collaboration between the First National Bank of Pasco and the Pasco County School Board. ArtsFirst grant applications are submitted by Pasco fine arts teachers, and awarded based upon the grant’s likelihood of improving student achievement and opportunity. “We have now been able to positively impact arts programs in 18 area schools for their fine arts programs this school year,” said Steven D. Hickman, president and chief executive offficer of First National Bank off Pasco. “The feedback we’re getting from teachers and administrators has been overwhelmingly positive.” The 2018-19 school year was the first year of the ArtsFirst program, with six schools selected each quarter, for a total of 18 grants. ArtsFirst monies can be used to purchase anything from instruments to technology to arrt supplies. First National Bank off Pasco intends to resume ArrttsFirst grant funding when school is back in session next fall. Heather Fultz, band director for Pine View Middle School, is using her school’s grant to purchase a subscription to Musicworks magazine — a quarterly magazine that helps beginning and intermediary band and music students learn to sight-read music. “This publication is perfect for middle school students, and will help them become more proficient musicians,” said Fultz. In the second round off grants, Latarsha Harris, an art teacher and yearbook advisor at Wesley Chapel Elementary School, used her school’s ArtsFirst funding to purchase an iPad that students are now using to learn how to do animation.

Heather Fultz, left, band ddirector at Pine View Middle School in Land O’ Lakes, accepts an ArtsFirst grant check from Kathy Balthazard, area sales maanager for First National Bank of Pasco. The school plans too use its grant to purchase material to help students learn to ssight-read music.

“The studentts love it so much,” said Harris. “They learned how to sketch their ide eas and then put them in motion. motion n” Tom Viking, fine arts program coordinator for Pasco County Schools, has worked with First National Bank off Pasco to launch the ArrtsFirst program. “First National Bank off Pasco has been a great parrttner off the Pasco County School District,” said Viking. “With every grant cycle, we’ve seen more grants submitttted, and a positive boost in public-private funding of more fine arrtts programs throughout the District.” First National Bank off Pasco is an independent commercial bank charrtered in 1986. It is Pasco County’s oldest, locally based, independently owned full-service financial institution, with branches in Dade City, Zephyrhills and Lutz. Throughout its history, the bank has demonstrated its good corporate citizenship by supporrtting events and causes important to its customers and employees. Father’s Day is often associated with grilling. Grilling accessories are a popular Father’s Day gift idea, and some dads use this time of year to purchase a new grill — with businesses often offering special sales. Father’s Day also is a time when families often go fishing — with fishing gear also being a popular gift category for dads. So, why not tie those two themes together for a Father’s Day meal? Instead of serving up the standard hamburgers and hot dogs, why not try grilling some seafood? It’s a good way to offer variety, and a healthier option. There’s a reason why fish is part of the Mediterranean diet and the DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension). Studies consistently have shown these diets to have positive outcomes when it comes to heart health. After all, fish has the healthy Omega 3 fatty acids, while the hot dogs and hamburgers have too much of the unhealthy saturated fat. Some people don’t like grilling fish. They think it sticks to the grill too easily, it’s too delicate to barbecue, or they aren’t sure about the flavor. An easy solution: Grill it wrapped in tin foil. This packs the flavor, makes it tender, and leaves for much easier clean up. The grilled fish also goes great with grilling vegetables in the tin foil packet as well. One thing to note though: Some studies have shown that putting aluminum foil on high temperatures can cause it to seep into the food, particularly with acidic and salty foods. Our bodies know how to rid of aluminum in small amounts, but research is still being done on what overexposure can do. So when using aluminum foil on the grill, it is best to do so in moderation. This recipe is for cod fish, but it works with all kinds of seafood. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads! Whether you’re grilling, fishing, hiking, biking, or relaxing indoors with the kids, enjoy your special day. Shari Bresin is the Family & Consumer Science Agent for the University of Florida/Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Cooperative Extension Pasco County.

Grilled cod fish with vegetables Ingredients: 4 pieces of cod fish (serves 4) Olive oil Salt and pepper Breadcrumbs 1 medium onion, sliced into rings 3 to 4 garlic cloves, chopped 4 to 6 bell peppers, sliced 2 carrots, thinly sliced Any other vegetables preferred, such as asparagus, mushrooms and so on. Directions: Put one cod fish fillet on one large piece of tin foil. Brush both sides of the fillet with olive oil and pepper. Add breadcrumbs to the top, and herbs and spices to taste. Place sliced onion and chopped garlic on top side. Place sliced vegetables on the sides of the fish on the tin foil. Wrap the tin foil tightly to make an enclosed cooking environment. Grill at medium heat for 6 minutes to 7 minutes on each side. Close the lid. Make sure fish is cooked to 145 degrees. Add salt, if desired. You can eat it right out of the foil packet. To make this more kid-friendly, try fish tacos. You can still make the fish (or any white fish) as described above, but then easily break apart into bite-sized pieces to place in the heated corn or flour tortilla shells. Fish taco filling ideas: Diced onion Diced tomato Shredded cabbage and/or lettuce Avocado Cilantro Pico de gallo Lime juice For a taco sauce, mix the following (from NatahsasKitchen.com): ½ cup sour cream (can also swap for plain nonfat yogurt) ⅓ cup mayonnaise 2 Tablespoons lime juice from lime 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon Sriracha hot sauce

Hot Dogs, Ice Cream and Fun By William Jacko Special to The Laker / Lutz News

Moody Judy’s specializes in hot dogs, Cubans and unique sandwiches, and of course ice cream—and fun. Judy Lambert owns the café, and would not have it any other way. “I love food, meeting people and making sweet memories,” Lambert said. “My goal is to create a meeting place where family and friends can enjoy good food and laugh together.” Lambert jokes with her guests, suggests tasty food combinations and sets everyone at ease with her playful sense of humor. She is not really moody — she thinks of herself as creative and silly. A good example are the fun names on her menu: Junkyard Dog, Garbage Dog, Inferno Dog, Fancy Schmancy Grilled Cheese, Gator Tracks and Fat Elvis. For hot dog lovers, Moody Judy’s is the perfect place to indulge because it carries Vienna Beef and Sabrett dogs, both in the natural casings, as well as a skinless Nathan’s. “We make an authentic Chicago dog from the poppy seed bun to the sport pepper,” said Lambert. “Our Coney and footlong dogs are served with our homemade chili, onions, mustard and sometimes Fritos. We have the best coleslaw, and use it not only as a side, but also as a topping for a dog, burger or chicken sandwich.”

Moody Judy’s also has salads and sandwiches, including its popular Fajita Clucker that is loaded with grilled chicken, onions and various types of peppers. Also, on the menu is their Cuban with fresh roasted Mojo pork and Cuban bread Italian roast beef, cheesesteaks and burgers, served on fresh bakery bread or tortilla. For dessert, the shop offers 31 flavors of ice cream, many that are chocolate based, like its Fat Elvis, which is chocolate, peanut butter and bananas. It even has a special frozen concoction called Exhausted Parents — a blend of ice cream, bourbon, espresso and bittersweet chocolate. Nondairy choices include soy vanilla chocolate chip and mango carrot and Italian ices. Lambert is not limited by the options on her menu. “If we have it, we will make it any way you want, the way you want it,” said Lambert. “People associate food with memories, or want something they had before. I love recreating those memories and duplicating what you’ve experienced in the past.” In addition to taking care of her customers, Lambert also believes in taking care her community. “One of the gifts of being a small business is being a part of the community,” said Lambert. “We participate in local fundraising events for schools and the Moose Lodge, and this summer we’re participating in a food drive for underprivileged local children.”

Wesley Chapel Episcopal Church is moving The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report Wesley Chapel Episcopal Church is moving to a new location, which will enable the church to offer a 10:30 a.m. service on Sundays. The new service time will launch on July 7. The church has been operating at Savanna Church, but because it was sharing the space, it could only offer an 8 a.m. Mass on Sundays. The church’s diocese recognized the need to offer a 10:30 a.m. Mass, to make it easier for church-goers and to encourage growth, according to a news release from the Rev.

Weekly recycling coming soon By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

The Pasco County Commission has approved weekly curbside recycling, with haulers having 90 days to make the transition to the once-a-week recycling pickups. Recycling previously was picked up twice a month. Community Development Districts and Homeowner Associations can continue on their current recycling contract until their individual contracts with haulers expire, but once that happens, they will be required to meet the once-a-week recycling pickup standard, according to the board’s action. In a separate item, commissioners improved a rate increase — capping the charge that haulers can collect at $16.81 a month.

Adrienne Hymes, who is the priest-in-charge at the Wesley Chapel Episcopal Church. The new location, at 3836 Flatiron Loop in Wesley Chapel, is just 150 yards away from its current location. The church will continue 8 a.m. worship services through Sunday, June 30, while preparations are made for its new worship space. “We have celebrated as a faith community many ‘firsts,’ so we continue to give glory to God for His direction and abundance, and continue to walk in faith as we prepare for our first 10:30 a.m. Mass,” Hymes said, in the release. Previously, the maximum rate was $12.44. The monthly charge is for both trash and recycling, and the maximum monthly charge had not been increased since 2009. The weekly pickup schedule is expected to boost the county’s recycling tonnage, according to county officials. Customers also will be able to toss their recyclables into one bin. However, they no longer will be able to recycle glass. County statistics reveal that Pasco residents recycle about 8,000 tons a year, while producing 379,000 tons of trash. Officials expect the additional recycling pickups will capitalize on recycling that wasn’t being captured. For more information on recycling schedules or to order a recycling cart, call your trash hauler. A list of local trash haulers can be found at bit.ly/GarbagePickUp. For more information on what can and can’t be recycled, visit bit.ly/PascoRecycling; call (727) 856-4539; or email recycling@pascocountyfl.net.

Hillel Academy’s eighth-grade students arrived at their ultimate destination — Israel — in May, after studying Israel, Hebrew and Judaism for years. From an early age, the students learn the geographic location of Israel, cities and important facts about the country, including Jewish beliefs, traditions, history, prayers and rituals. While in Israel, the students were able to ride camels, watch the sun set over a crater, swim in the Dead Sea, volunteer at Leket Nahalal, hike the Arbel mountain, and attend evening celebrations for Yom Ha’atzmaut (Independence Day) on Ben Yehuda Street, and more. They also walked the streets of Tel Aviv, spoke Hebrew with the residents, For information, call (352) 588-7324. The environmental camp is planned for June 24 to June 28. Students can experience the field and the laboratory in both aquatic and terrestrial environments, along with instruction in collecting, analyzing and interpreting samples, and identifying organisms. ROADWORK, from page 1A to be completed this year. In 2020, the state DOT expects to widen U.S. 41 to a four-lane road, from just south of State Road 52 to Connerton Boulevard. The biggest project, Gwynn said, will introduce a new State Road 52 route to U.S. 301. That project involves widening the road to four lanes, beginning at the intersection of State Road 52 and Uradco Place, extending to the Bayou Branch Canal. East of the canal, a brand new four-lane State Road 52 will branch off (south of existing State Road 52) and eventually will merge with Clinton Avenue. This new alignment, expected to begin this fall, will provide an additional route from Interstate 75 to U.S. 301. When that project is completed, the existing State Road 52 will be turned over to Pasco County to become County Road 52. U.S. 301 is scheduled for several improvements, too. There are plans to repave U.S. 301 from Pond Avenue to the north of Long Avenue. And, another project will widen the stretch from County Road 54 (Eiland Boulevard) to north of Kossik Road into six lanes. Another project would expand U.S. 301 to four lanes south of State Road 56 to south of State Road 39.That two-mile project is expected to include a median, as well as a bike lane, sidewalk and a shared-use path. Another two-fold project is under evaluation on U.S. 301, Gwynn said. That project would expand the stretch from State Road 39 to Corey Street in Downtown Zephyrhills. Then, branching out from the Corey Street intersection would be two newly built one-way roads. Each road would hold three lanes, run parallel to U.S. 301 and end just south of County Road 54. Gwynn also mentioned the plans to add another entrance in Wesley Chapel from Interstate 75.

PROPERTY, from page 1A going lawsuit with Pinellas County, where Pinellas has refused to pay property taxes on the 12,400 acres on the Cross Bar and Al Ranch property it owns north of State Road 52 and east of U.S. 41 in Central Pasco. Joiner explained, last year alone, Pinellas made more than $2 million on that property from timber and pine straw harvesting, and therefore owes Pasco about $200,000 in taxes. The Second District Court of Appeal recently sided with Pasco in the property tax dispute after it lost in the lower court. The

The new diamond interchange would connect Overpass Road to the interstate by way of a flyover ramp. Overpass Road would be accommodated with two additional lanes from its intersection with Old Pasco Road to the exit ramp getting off the interstate. From the ramp, to the intersection with Boyette Road, Overpass Road would be widened to six lanes. No start date has been determined yet, Gwynn said. The director also revealed that Wesley Chapel is one of five areas being studied as a possible public transportation hub for traveling cross-county. It would afford commuters traveling out of Pasco County to neighboring Hillsborough County an alternative from personal transportation. And, Gwynn informed attendees of the new Florida legislation to build three multiuse corridors, adding new toll roads as well. “The main purpose of them is to revitalize some of the rural communities that may have been left behind as Florida has prospered – to encourage job creation in these areas,” the director said. One local corridor will be the Northern Turnpike Connector, which will bridge the Florida Turnpike northwest to the Suncoast Parkway. Construction on the corridors is set for late 2022. Gwynn also mentioned that the construction of the long-awaited diverging diamond in Wesley Chapel is still progressing. The project, which is reconfiguring the State Road 56 bridge overpassing Interstate 75, will crisscross eastbound and westbound lanes upon reaching the bridge. Four through lanes and two left-turn lanes will make up the westbound road on the south end of the bridge, to better accommodate heavier traffic flow. The eastbound road will hold only three lanes on the north end. The project is still set to be completed in late 2021, Gwynn said. issue is now likely to wind up in the Florida Supreme Court. “We’re very confident we’re going to get it,” Joiner said.“It’s not fair that every person in this room, and every person around here has to pay (taxes), and yet they (Pinellas County) think they’re exempt.” In an action related to that lawsuit, the Pasco County Commission voted on June 4 to send a letter to the Pinellas County Commission, urging them to drop its legal action. In essence, Pasco commissioners said it is only fair that Pinellas pay its taxes, just like other property owners. —B.C. Manion contributed to this report.

BREWERY, from page 1A The new brewery will operate out of a 34,000-square-foot building at 2029 Arrowgrass Drive. The building, previously Sports + Field, is off State Road 56 and near Interstate 75. “We were working with a few other county economic development companies to be able to look at sites,” Derby said. “Finding a property that big, that was well-suited, that was close to the interstate, was a challenge, as well,” said Derby, who had been looking in other parts of the state. So, when they saw the Wesley Chapel site, it “kind of screamed at us,” he said. “We’re extremely happy with the building,” he said, noting the brick building was built in 2005 and has modern features that are needed, including fire sprinklers. “The building is awesome from a utilities standpoint. It has plenty of power. “Being a gym, with showers and saunas in its previous use — the water line is massive. All of the drainage and stuff is great. And, usually, that’s the biggest issue for a brewery — the utility aspect of things,” Derby explained. “We looked at some vacant land, as well. But, to build something, like what is already there, would be kind of out of our budget,” Derby said. Some modifications will be needed. “We will have to cut up the floors and put some drainage in,” he said. Some more paved driveways will be needed. A chiller will be installed and air conditioners repaired, he added. “We want to change the façade, maybe add some more glass. We’re really big on getting as much natural light into the building as possible,” he added. A landscaping crew already has been at the site. “It took them six days to cut back all of (the) brush and overgrown trees,” Derby said. When the brewery opens, it will have a production space, offices, a full kitchen, a beer garden, and bar. “In the restaurant, there will be a mixture of seated, served meals; and, we’ll have community tables,” he said. The beer garden will have open-air and covered seating. The company expects to have at least 46 to 50 employees to start, Derby said. “We’re probably going to add more after that, once we’re able to judge the demand for the retail component,” he said. “We’re in our design phase right now, with our architect. Once we have that nailed down, we’ll see what kind of equipment will fit. The size of the equipment is going to determine how much labor we would need.

COURTESY OF BREW BUS BREWING

Anthony Derber, CEO of Brew Bus Brewing and Florida Avenue Brewing Co., said his company was attracted to Wesley Chapel because of its growth.

“A lot of the jobs we would be bringing up there would be high-paying.We’ll have a full-blown lab up there, which will require a master’s in biology,” he said. The company has been working with the Pasco Economic Development Council Inc., and expects to qualify for some economic incentives from Pasco County. The company has received support from the Pasco EDC, from the North Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce, from government officials and from the brewery’s vendors. While the Seminole Heights location operates buses that travel to breweries throughout the Tampa Bay area, there are no plans to house buses at the Wesley Chapel location, Derby said. However, it will be possible to make arrangements to use buses that operate out of the Seminole Heights location, to make it convenient for people who would want to enjoy the bus experience, he added. The Wesley Chapel operation represents more than $8.7 million in new capital investment in Pasco County, according to a news release from the Pasco EDC.The location will be used for brewing, canning and distribution of the company’s craft beers. “It’s great to reactivate a dormant property with high-paying manufacturing jobs in a unique industry,” Bill Cronin, president/CEO of Pasco EDC, said, in the release. Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moore also shared his thoughts, in the release. “Not only are they creating jobs, but their new tasting room and restaurant will be a great destination for residents and tourists alike. Breweries are a huge part of the tourism market,” said Moore, whose district includes the site. For more information about Brew Bus Brewing Inc., visit BrewBusUSA.com.

Land O’ Lakes Athletics Hall of Fame adds members By Kevin Weiss

Past Land O’ Lakes Athletics Hall of Fame inductees

kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

T

he Land O’ Lakes Gators Athletics Foundation recently added five new members to the school’s athletics Hall of Fame, during a dinner ceremony. The inductees for the 2019 class were: Stacy Bishop, a record-setting girls soccer player from 1999 to 2003; Jerry Brewster, a state qualifying wrestler and team MVP in 1986; John Childers III, an All-Conference basketball standout in the mid 1980s;Vicky King, longtime varsity girls soccer coach; and Mike McBride, an All-State football player and standout wrestler from 1989 to 1993. The ceremony marked the school’s seventh Hall of Fame induction class, which began in 2013 after the Gators Athletics Foundation was established as a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Former Tampa Bay Buccaneer and Florida Gators All-American receiver Reidel Anthony served as the keynote speaker for the May 16 induction ceremony. The foundation’s purpose is to “raise funds through donations and fundraising events for the direct benefit of the athletic programs at Land O’ Lakes High School.” The mission of the foundation is to enhance the athletic programs at Land O’ Lakes by providing additional funds for facilities, uniforms, transportation and other athletic program needs not covered by traditional school funding. Here’s a closer look at this year’s inductees:

STACY BISHOP: FEMALE ATHLETE

Stacy Bishop (Class of ’03) was an AllCounty and All-District soccer player all four years at Land O’ Lakes, where she registered 192 goals (still a Pasco County record) along with 90 assists. In addition to those accolades, Bishop in 2003 was named Pasco County Athlete of the Year and recognized as an National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Academic All-American. Bishop went on to play Division I collegiate soccer at Louisiana State University and Florida, developing into a first-team AllAmerican and MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist (annually given to the nation’s top collegiate soccer player). Following her collegiate career, Bishop played professional soccer in the Women’s Professional Soccer league, earning stints with the Boston Breakers and Atlanta Beat franchises, respectively.

JERRY BREWSTER: LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Jerry Brewster (Class of ’86) was a member of both the football and wrestling team at Land O’ Lakes.Among his biggest accomplishments in athletics came on the mat — qualifying for the state wrestling tournament and earning team MVP honors his senior year. He went on to wrestle collegiately for a short time at College of DuPage in Illinois before continuing his education to earn a bachelor’s degree at University of South Florida and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Tampa. Upon graduating with his MBA, Brewster

JOHN CHILDERS III: LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

VICKY KING: COACH/ADMINISTRATOR

John Childers III (Class of ’86) played both basketball and baseball at Land O’ Lakes, with some of his biggest achievements coming on the hardwood. In three seasons on the varsity basketball team, Childers III earned team MVP honors and was a second team All-Gulf Coast Conference selection. He went on to receive a full basketball scholarship to Pasco-Hernando Community College where he was a two-year starter. Professionally, Childers III advanced through the ranks at Chase Bank and eventually started his own mortgage solution company in 2001, JCIII & Associates Inc.The company grew to 650 employees before being sold in 2015. Pasco County honors its 2019 graduates By Brian Fernandes bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com

A

s graduates stepped across the stage at the University of South Florida’s Yuengling Center to accept their diplomas — the crowd erupted with cheers and applause. That’s not an atypical reaction at graduation ceremonies, but this one was particularly special. The Class of 2019 at Cypress Creek Middle High School made history on June 5, by becoming the first crop of graduates from the Wesley Chapel high school. They were among thousands of seniors marking the traditional rite of passage, in graduation ceremonies large and small across The Laker/Lutz News coverage area. Many of those graduation ceremonies took place at USF’s Yuengling Center, but some were held in smaller, more intimate settings. The Cypress Creek seniors wore gowns donned with green and yellow — representing their school colors. These graduates have been leaders at the school since it opened in the Fall of 2017, without a senior class. “Every graduating class is special, but these guys and girls are incredibly near and dear to our hearts,” said Cypress Creek Principal Carin Hetzler-Nettles.“They’ve literally built the foundation for this school.” The graduating class is comprised of 225 students, included six pairs of twins. Many Cypress Creek graduates have been accepted already to colleges, such as Saint Leo University, the University of Central Florida, the University of Florida, the University of South Florida and scores of others. “I’ve been accepted into USF since September (2018),” said Cypress Creek graduate Hayley McManus. She’s considering a major in engineering or psychology.

GRADUATION MARKS AN END, AND A BEGINNING

Thousands of students across the region are leaving a familiar place — whether it was a sprawling college campus, a small private school, or a large high school — to start a new journey in life.

Lucas Budd, class valedictorian, addresses his peers, during the Graduate-to-Graduate Message portion of the program.

The thought of receiving her diploma was a lot to take in, for McManus, an 18-yearold from Cypress Creek. “It’s kind of surreal,” she said. “I had hopes that I would graduate, but I never thought about how being the inaugural class would feel. I feel kind of special that I’m setting the precedent.” Sam Mazzeo had a similar feeling of pride about being Cypress Creek’s first graduating class and also about helping to set an example for the school’s younger students. He wants to return to Cypress Creek to help coach football. Jason Stahlgren, a Florida transplant from Ohio, didn’t arrive at Cypress Creek until his senior year. But, the warm welcome he received made it a good experience, he said. “Moving my senior year was tough, but everybody here made it really easy,” said Stahlgren. When Karisma Brooks initially arrived at Cypress Creek, her only desire was to return to her former high school in Tampa, she recalled. Over time, though, she adjusted to her new environment and was able to create some memorable moments – especially as a member of the school’s first step team. “It was a really big impact on us to bring African-American culture to the school,” Brooks said, with a smile. The 17-year-old is now ready to serve her country as part of the U.S. Air Force, and then plans to seek a degree in health sciences.

Lisa McMahon, a speech therapist at Cypress Creek High School, straightens the cap of graduate Matthew Montesant, before festivities begin.

GRADUATES EARN DIPLOMAS, ACCOLADES

Lucas Budd, the Cypress Creek valedictorian, was one of more than 60 Pasco seniors from various high schools to receive an associate’s degree from Pasco-Hernando State College. During the ceremony, Budd told his fellow students: “Today marks the end of a significant and memorable chapter in our lives. Be proud of this accomplishment, but leave some praise for the people who helped us graduate. We should be thankful for our families who have supported us.” Lori Vogel was in the crowd to support Ashley Nickisher, a graduate and Vogel’s niece. “This is a very special moment, and I’m very excited for her,”Vogel said. In her remarks during the ceremony, Cypress Creek Principal Hetzler-Nettles told the Class of 2019:“You’ve made me so very proud. As you move into life on your own personal journey and to new territory, exploring new things, remember what you’ve accomplished. You’re an integral part of something larger than yourself.” While Cypress Creek graduates were making history, members of the Class of 2019 across Pasco County had plenty of reasons to celebrate. Land O’ Lakes High School, with more than 400 graduates, received more than $12 million in scholarship offers. Zephyrhills High, with an estimated 360 graduates, pulled in more than $750,000 in scholarship offers. Pasco High School, which issued diplomas to more than 300 students, received

more than $1 million in scholarship money. And, that’s just to mention a few of the accomplishments, among the region’s public schools. Private schools and area colleges also had plenty of reasons to be proud. Academy at the Lakes in Land O’ Lakes had its graduation ceremony on May 18. “We had 42 graduates – 100 percent of them going on to college,” said Mark Heller, head of the private school. Among the schools accepting Academy students are Yale University, Vanderbilt University, University of Florida, University of Washington and the Pratt Institute art school. “At a school like Academy at the Lakes, relationships are everything,” Heller stated. “Relationships between the teachers and students really are the key to preparing these young adults to be the best they can be.” Even at the collegiate level, there was much to be celebrated. Pasco-Hernando State College had two commencement ceremonies at its West Campus in New Port Richey. Graduate Stephanie Bostick received an associate of arts and associate of science degree in legal assisting. Tracy Meshey persevered with a brain injury to earn her associate of science degree, and Maria Madeiros received her associate of arts degree after relocating from her native Brazil and learning to speak English. Saint Leo University awarded more than 1,250 degrees. The university’s valedictorian was Angela Lazzaro, a psychology major. Its salutatorian was Jennifer Fields, a criminal justice major.

TURTLES ARE ON THE MOVE

Once the weather gets warm, turtles are on the move, but sometimes a road or highway stands between them and their destination. Many turtles are severely injured or killed on roads every year. If you see a turtle on or near a road, take action by following these steps provided by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). • Safely pull over. Park in a safe place, put your hazard lights on and make sure traffic is clear. You won’t be able to help any animal if you do not look out for your own safety first. • Speed up the process. Pick a turtle up by grasping them firmly by both sides of the body, in front of their hind legs. Large See PET PAWS, page 3B

leave the cleaning to maid Brigade! Ask how you can receive a FREE disinfection treatment with your cleaning ($50 Value)!

Lana is ready for a new home Lana is a 5-year-old mixed-breed pup that arrived at the shelter at the beginning of May. This pretty girl is heartworm negative and up to date on her vaccines. Lana was found with another dog, but she has had little interest in making new friends at the shelter

If you would like to adopt Darcy or Lana, be sure to visit Pasco County Animal Services at 19640 Dogpatch Lane in Land O’ Lakes. The adoption center is open Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 6:30 p.m. All adoption fees include spay/neuter, microchip and vaccines. For more information, email adoptionpartners@pascocountyfl.net. PET PAWS PET PAWS, from page 2B snapping turtles have long necks and can bite hard, so do not pick them up. Instead, gently push them from behind to safety with a blunt object. Always keep the turtle moving in the same direction they are headed. Do not try to make them change course. Once the turtle is on the other side, leave it alone. Do not relocate turtles to new areas. • Get help for injured turtles. If you see an injured turtle, rush the animal to a veterinarian, an animal shelter or a wildlife rehabilitator to be assessed. • Make sure the turtle isn’t suffering. Even if the animal appears to be dead, stop to make sure. If a turtle’s shell is crushed, it can remain alive for days or even weeks in pain because a turtle has a slow metabolism.Test for a reaction by gently pinching a back toe or touching the corner of the eyelid to see if the turtle pulls back or blinks. • Help turtles avoid roads completely. If you are in a grassy area and see a turtle

headed toward a road, take action before it is too late. Visit PETA.org, and search ‘Wildlife Emergencies’ for more tips on helping animals in trouble.
