Raises unlikely in Pasco schools By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com
Pasco County School Board members have expressed a desire to give teachers a raise, but according to Superintendent Kurt Browning, there’s no money available to make that happen. Browning’s remarks came during a budget workshop last week in the board room at the district’s headquarters in Land O’ Lakes. Olga Swinson, the district’s chief finan-
cial officer, provided a run-through of budget numbers for board members — noting that these numbers will change before the board’s next budget workshop, which is set for July 24. However, based on what the district knows now, there’s a projected deficit of about $1.2 million, she said. Based on that, the district will have to find cuts to balance the budget before the board takes its first vote on the budget July 31, Browning said.
“I think what we’re all looking for here is where we can find money for teacher raises because we all said that was a priority for us,” said board member Colleen Beaudoin. Swinson responded: “Obviously, we didn’t get enough money for salary raises.” Beaudoin noted: “I’m concerned that we’re losing good people.” The district needs to look at such issues as how much it costs to hire, onboard, train See RAISES, page 15A

Pasco County’s jail in Land O’ Lakes is overcrowded. Fire rescue needs new and refurbished stations. And, the upkeep and repairs for parks and libraries are years behind schedule. Annual budgets, however, barely scratch the surface on the costs to fix these deficiencies. So, Pasco County commissioners are hoping voters will approve four general obligation bond referendums in November 2018. If all four were approved, owners of a $100,000 home would pay about $8 a year in each of the first three years. As the loan on the bonds was repaid, the amount would gradually increase to about $31 a year during the lifetime of the bonds. In a June 19 vote in New Port Richey, county commissioners agreed to put the bond issues on the ballot, and see what happens. No one spoke in opposition at the public hearing. Two library advocates spoke in favor. They reminded county commissioners of the bond referendum in the 1980s that paid

for libraries operating in the county. The library bond would collect more than $18 million to help modernize the county’s libraries. “Certainly technology has changed dramatically in the way libraries offer their services,” said Gail Stout, a member of the library advisory board. “This bond will provide some of the renovations and repairs drastically needed for many years.” Rosalyn Fenton, president of the Friends

The Coalition for the Homeless of Pasco County can move forward with plans to temporarily house homeless families in a building at the former campus of the Boys & Girls Club in Port Richey. The coalition, with support from other social service agencies, also will open the Housing Services Center, which will administratively help families and individuals seeking permanent housing and other services. The Pasco County Commission, with Commissioner Jack Mariano dissenting, approved the coalition’s plan at its June 19 meeting in New Port Richey. Commissioners also approved a 15-year lease agreement for $1 a year; and, a $190,000 contract to design renovations of two buildings at 8239 Youth Lane. During the public hearing, many area residents who live near the site gave county commissioners the same unified message they’ve delivered before: They don’t want the coalition in their neighborhood, and they are voters. Residents say they worry about crime, loss of property values, and safety. “We deserve to be heard. We deserve to be listened to. We live and sleep here,” said Suzanne Greene Taldone, a resident in nearby Crane’s Roost.“You keep trying to put a square peg into a round hole.” Supporters, including most county commissioners, say it’s overdue for Pasco to step up efforts to help the homeless population. Data from the coalition puts the number of homeless people in Pasco County at about 2,500. Homeless families make up about 1,800 of those people and there are about 700 single adults. Mary Ashcraft is pastor at Joining Hands Mission Church and opens the church to the homeless in cold weather. She supports the coalition’s project. “There’s so many families out there,” she said.“I get phone calls, and I have nowhere to send them but Metropolitan Ministries. They go a great job, but they are full and packed.” The county owns the land on Youth Lane and is providing at least $700,000 in grants, and other sources, to pay for building renovations. “I think we’re going to do the right thing,” said Pasco County Commissioner Kathryn Starkey.“Sometimes, we just have to take a chance.” The lease agreement has a 90-day written notice of termination clause.
Starkey said,“If it doesn’t go right, we’ll do something about it.” Crane’s Roost resident Valerie Schaefer said the coalition’s programs would be like a magnet — attracting more homeless people and transients into the neighborhood. “We taxpayers and voters will hold you commissioners responsible if you vote this through,” she said. Mariano shared concerns that the Housing Services Center could have people loitering in the area. He also thought spending available grants on Habitat for Humanity houses would be a better option. “The issue is something we’re all sensitive to. It’s only primarily about location to the neighbors,” Mariano said. “I still don’t think it’s the right project.” The programs approved by county commissioners were a change from the initial project to open a one-stop navigation center, with wrap-around services and a shelter for adult men and women. Most supporters liked the shift in direction to help homeless families; while others still favored the original navigation center concept. Under the amended proposal, the center will house four to eight families in the former teen center that’s on the site. They can receive services for up to 180 days, though coalition representatives say they expect most will be there about 45 days before transitioning to permanent housing. No more than 36 people can stay there at any one time. There also will be background checks, curfews, security cameras, and staff members onsite at the family shelter 24 hours a day. Plus, the coalition will limit services available at the Housing Services Center, which will operate Monday through Friday office hours. There will be no showers, emergency food or clothing, or health care services. Those conditions convinced owners of an adjacent shopping plaza to support the coalition. “This is not going to bring people out of the camps,” said Robert Lincoln, an attorney representing the plaza owners.“There’s not giveaways. It’s not going to be the anchor for bringing those people into the area.” Chase Daniels, assistant executive director for the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, also voiced Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco’s continued support for the program. The coalition will provide desk space for deputies working in the area. They can stop by and fill out their paperwork, Daniels said. “They will have a presence,” he added.

Construction on two turn-around driveways to ease traffic flow at the site of a sinkhole in Lake Padgett Estates is expected to be done by this fall. The sinkhole opened up on July 14, 2017, causing extensive damage. It split Ocean Pines Drive into two segments, swallowed two houses, a motorcycle and a boat, and caused seven houses in the area to be condemned. Pasco County is in initial stages of purchasing needed right of way on Ocean Pines Drive for the turn-arounds. A 6-foot decorative fence, and a gate, also will be installed around the sinkhole. Pasco County officials also have ruled out any possibility of opening a connection between the sinkhole and Lake Saxon. Some residents had expressed interest in linking the sinkhole to Lake Saxon in meetings with county officials. County officials have estimated that linking the sinkhole and Lake Saxon would cost an estimated $2 million. But, that option has been ruled out, after county officials met with representatives from the Southwest Florida Water Management District. “They were strongly against the connection because of unraveling, deep unraveling, and possible sinkhole activity,” said Margaret Smith, the county’s engineer services direc-
tor. “They also have concerns about the aquifer, knowing a lot of people are on wells.” Smith gave the Pasco County Commission an update of the county’s plans during the commission’s June 19 meeting in New Port Richey. Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moore expressed concerns about the aesthetics of the wrap-around fence. “What are we going to do to make sure it’s appealing to the eye, and continuing to keep up property values?” Moore asked. “We’re not just tossing a fence up. It’s got to look decent.” Smith said current plans were for a “little bit of landscaping.” More can be added to the design, but she said the county would own only a strip of land bought for right of way. Pasco County Attorney Jeffrey Steinsnyder noted:“This is not a county project. We are stabilizing a situation that basically occurred by an act of God.” Pasco County commissioners agreed in March to build the turn-arounds and install the fence at an estimated cost of $242,000. The turn-arounds will provide greater safety when garbage trucks and emergency vehicles drive in and out of both ends of Ocean Pines. Currently, vehicles must back up to exit or back into private driveways to turn around. County commissioners reviewed several other options, including simply installing a fence.

Empty Nesters Find Bexley a Hidden Gem
W
ith their children grown, Monique and Monty Trice were looking for a dream home that both they and their visiting families could enjoy. After months of searching in communities south of Tampa, they decided to focus on finding a place closer to their existing townhome in Westchase. Their search led them to Bexley in Land O’ Lakes. After exploring the new Pasco County community, just off State Road 54, the couple knew right away they had found what they were looking for. “We got to Bexley, and immediately I thought, ‘this is home’,” said Monique. The semi-retired couple settled on The Willow floorplan by Lennar, a 2,500-square-foot, four-bedroom, two-story home with two large master suites, one on each floor. “Having a bedroom on the first floor was very important to us,” added Monty. “We have older family members who visit, and it’s important to us that they’re comfortable and they don’t have to climb any stairs.” Bexley’s location, approximately 26 miles from Tampa, was a big draw for the couple. “It’s really a hidden gem,” noted Monique of the community. “It’s a very easy commute for us to get to work.” The couple also appreciated the unique home styles, the distinct architecture found in Bexley and the outstanding amenities.
Monique and Monty Trice found their forever home in the new Pasco County community, Bexley, in Land O’ Lakes.
“There’s so much to do, it feels like you’re at a resort,” said Monty. “Our weekends are full of adventure with the different community activities that are scheduled, such as concerts and the Bexley Morning Market.” Set within 1,825 acres of pastoral ranch lands, mature woodlands and cypress wetlands, Bexley residents enjoy two resort-style pools, a game room and miles of multi-surface Avid™ trails for biking, jogging or walking. For kids and grandkids, there are custom-built playgrounds to enjoy, Mud, Sweat and Gears Park
for soccer or football games, and a BMX bicycle pump track. There’s even the BarkYard Park for fourlegged residents, with separate spaces for big and small dogs. “We designed Bexley so that it would be the ideal community for people at all stages of life,” said Pam Parisi, Vice President of Marketing for Newland Communities, which developed Bexley. “There are singlefamily homes, along with low-maintenance townhomes and villas. So whether you’re a single professional, a growing family or an active retiree, we have a home for
you at a variety of different price points.” Monique agrees. “Whatever stage you are, Bexley is a fit! We love that we have such a diverse set of neighbors. Some have children, and we get to watch them grow up. Others are retirees. We love to have impromptu gatherings together. They’ve all become like family to us.” To find out what it would be like to live in Bexley, try the community’s exclusive Resident for a Day program. Ashton Woods Excels at Interior Home Design
Y
our dream home is finally coming together. You’ve decided where you want to live, and found the perfect floor plan for your family by a builder with a great reputation. After you formalize the details with a signed contract, the next step at the design studio is perhaps the most fun of all, because you and your designer will transform your floor plan into the home of your dreams. It’s this interior design phase where Ashton Woods excels, both because of its talented and experienced design staff, and because it has the ability to customize and personalize home interiors more than most production builders. “If we can make it happen, we will,” said Viana Ayuso, an Ashton Woods design consultant at the company’s design studio in Brandon. “We encourage our customers to dream big, because we are more flexible and have more options than most builders.” Ayuso and her colleague, Kristin Wilson, have designed hundreds of homes for Ashton Woods families in Tampa Bay. Together, they have close to 20 years experience in new home interiors, and understand the cyclical nature of design that drives a client’s desires and expectations. “Our goal is to achieve the look our buyers want, within the budget they have to spend,” said Ayuso. “We guide them to make sure their desired look flows seamlessly throughout the house, and help them make the many decisions needed to specify their home’s interior.” Ashton Woods design consultants typically spend between four and six hours working one-on-one with buyers to select finishes that reflect their lifestyle, their design style and, of course, their budget. Their overall objective is custom personalization that makes a home unique to the buyer. “Before we meet, we ask buyers to

think about what they dislike about their current home, and what they love. That gives us a good starting point,” said Ayuso. Because of HGTV and the plethora of interior decorating magazines and internet sites, most customers come in with a clear vision of what they want, and often bring Pinterest boards, fabric and paint swatches, magazine tear sheets and even photos of interiors from other models, Ayuso explains. “Homebuyers today come into their appointment knowing the name and style of products for example a Cambria quartz countertop” she said. Ayuso and Wilson begin their design sessions by asking lots of questions and closely listening to their buyers. “Flooring is the most expensive element and extends to all living spaces, so it's a great place to begin,” said Ayuso. “Next is the kitchen, because it is the heart of the home and the centerpiece of the living area.” Ayuso advises clients to select timeless design features, using a neutral color palette with white or ivory cabinets and simple backsplashes, so that their home does not look dated in a few
Top 5 Design Trends 1. Wood Plank Tiles – the look of wood with the durability of tile, generally for less money than real wood 2. White Cabinets – always in style, transitional and timeless 3. Farmhouse Style – casual lifestyle is the rage, with lots of classic Americana elements 4. Quartz countertops – have replaced granite because they’re heat and stain resistant, and need no special care 5. Personal Retreat – luxurious master spa to unwind with rain showerheads off the ceiling and stand-alone tubs in middle of bath
years as design trends change. “You can change your style with accent pieces, new area rugs and paint,” Ayuso said. “That’s much more affordable than replacing dark cabinets and multicolor backsplashes. Our goal is to design a home that can be inexpensively updated as styles change.” Most clients want their new home to be move-in ready, Ayuso said, because
they don’t have time to take care of details like blinds and painting after they close. “Plus, they can add the cost of their interior finishes to their mortgage, which is very attractive for many buyers,” Ayuso said. “The general rule is for every $1,000 in design features, it adds just $6 a month to a mortgage. So, if you’re looking at $30,000 in upgrades, that comes to just $180 per month.” Viana, who has a design certificate from NY Institute Art & Design, as well as an MBA in Advertising, loves her job at Ashton Woods. “I come from a family of musicians, and creativity is a big part of me,” she said. “I’ve always had a knack for design, and love sharing with clients which colors work best, and explaining the theory and history behind their design choices.” In Pasco County, Ashton Woods is building homes in Asturia, a masterplanned community in Odessa located on State Road 54, just west of the Suncoast Parkway. For more information, go to AshtonWoods.com/tampa, or call Ayuso at (813) 324-8815.

Baby Boomers Await Del Webb Bexley
I
f you’re a baby boomer looking to retire in the next few years, imagine a 55-plus community that offers an active lifestyle located within one of Tampa Bay’s most desirable masterplanned communities, where your children and grandchildren live just minutes away. This is the vision Del Web is bringing to Pasco County, in the Land O’ Lakes’ community of Bexley — a 1,825acre development by Newland Communities, one of the most respected developers in the country. “This is the first brand new Del Webb community in the Tampa Bay Region in a long time, and the anticipation and interest we’re seeing is incredible, said Kelli Bailey, vice president of sales for the Pulte Group, which has owned Del Webb since 2001. “With very little marketing, 2,800 people have already registered on our VIP list to receive regular updates about Del Webb Bexley, said Bailey. “We’re seeing a huge pent-up demand for this community, especially from local residents. Bailey reports that about 70 percent of the community’s VIP members already live in Tampa Bay, and in particular Pasco County, where many members have long-term connections to the area through family, friends and work. “Tampa Bay is a great place to live, no matter your age, said Bailey. “And, as one gets closer to retirement, having an active adult community close-by like Del Webb Bexley, gives retirees the opportunity to continue living near friends and family, enjoy the area’s great shopping, dining and entertainment, and relax at beautiful beaches less than an hour away. Construction of Del Webb Bexley began this spring with roads and infrastructure at the 489-acre site. Work begins later this summer on the community’s first model homes and amenities. An official grand opening is planned for early 2019. Pre-sales will begin in late November to members on its VIP list,
and the first residents will begin moving into the community next summer. At completion, Del Webb Bexley will have 850 homes. Residents will not have to worry about lawn care and landscaping, because the community’s homeowners association will take care of all lawn maintenance. “People really are looking forward to never having to mow their grass again and instead focus on enjoying Del Webb’s unrivaled lifestyle, said Bailey. Dell Web Bexley is offering 17 floor plans designed with features desired by older residents. Homes will include integrated outdoor living areas, kitchens and laundries with raised appliances, bedrooms that easily convert into offices, dens and hobby rooms, and an abundance of storage to accommodate downsizing. Home sizes will range from 1,200 to 4,000 square feet, and prices will begin in the low $200s. Home sites will be on 40-, 50- and 60-foot lots, with many backing up to water and conservation. Pulte chose Land O’ Lakes for its newest Del Webb community after ex-
tensive market research to identify the best location for its Tampa development. Focus groups identified top priorities as easy access to downtown, the Westshore district and Tampa International Airport; close proximity to beaches and other recreational activities; and top-rated medical facilities. These priorities brought Pulte’s search to central Pasco County, and ultimately to Bexley, because of its convenient location next to the Suncoast Parkway, its closeness to several hospitals and medical specialists, and availability of many diverse recreational activities. Another bonus is Del Webb’s location within Bexley’s master-planned community. “We expect many homebuyers will choose Del Webb Bexley because they want to live close to their children and grandchildren, said Bailey. “It’s the best of two worlds, said Bailey. “As people get older, many want to live in an age-restricted community like Del Webb because of the social and recreational activities designed just for
them. Cornerstone’s New Warehouse Is All About Customer Service
L
ike many service businesses, Cornerstone Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electrical had a plan in place in case of a hurricane. So when Irma struck Tampa Bay last September, owner Dana Spears believed her company was ready. Her fleet of 35 trucks and 65 employees were prepared to help customers get back up and running after power outages and flooding. But, a shortage of air conditioning units, generators and service parts hindered Cornerstone’s goal of 100 percent customer satisfaction, because they could not get some of the equipment and parts they needed. “We had to rely on our distributors, and when they couldn’t get product from the manufacturers, we were stuck, too.” said Spears. “Getting generators was the worst — the manufacturers were backlogged for two and three months, and we had to wait like everyone else.” That situation was unacceptable to Spears, who takes prides in her company’s commitment to fast, expert service and outstanding customer care. “I realized after Irma that we needed a larger warehouse so we could stock more of our own supplies and equipment,” said Spears. “I didn't want to go through another storm season depending on our suppliers, worrying if they would be able to fill our orders.” So began Spears’ plan to build a 6,000-square-foot warehouse next to her existing building on U.S. 41 in Land O’ Lakes. And, just eight months after Irma left its mark, Cornerstone will soon be opening its new warehouse. “We will be fully ready for hurricane season this year,” said Spears. “We are investing over $100,000 in generators, water tanks and air conditioning units, plus thousands more in an expanded parts invento-
ry, all to be stocked in our new warehouse. This is a huge commitment for our company, and we’re doing it to make sure we have all the supplies needed to take care of our customers.” Cornerstone’s new warehouse will store air conditioning units of all sizes and seer levels, and stock more high-demand service items for its air conditioning, electrical and plumbing operations. It will also stock portable and permanent generators of all sizes, including whole-house systems by Generac. The new warehouse will also allow Cornerstone to field more service and maintenance calls, because technicians will no longer need to drive to supplier warehouses and wait for parts to be loaded on their trucks. “Every morning our vans will be fully stocked with everything our technicians need, which means on most calls, we will be able to solve a customer’s problem on the first visit,” said Spears. “And, because our trucks will be more fully stocked, we

will become a more efficient service operation that will result in even better customer service.” The warehouse will also allow Cornerstone to buy some items in bulk, often at reduced prices, and expand the number of inventory items it carries. “The savings we see from bulk purchasing will be passed along to customers after we are fully stocked,” said Spears. Cornerstone was founded in 2006 as an air conditioning service company. It moved to its 4-acre site on Land O’ Lakes Boulevard in 2011, and the following year added plumbing services. In 2014, it expanded again with electrical services. Spears credits her company’s growth to its commitment to outstanding customer service, and also because its employees exemplify her company’s values. “We hire people who are genuine, honest, trustworthy, clean-cut, and live their life with good ethics and morals,” said Spears. “Most em-
ployees are local people who live in our service area, and they are very committed to their work and community.” The company has developed its own training program for employees to become certified in its trade areas. Fifteen employees have successfully completed these training programs, receiving numerous industry certifications, and now work as highly skilled tradesmen. Currently, three employees are enrolled in the Cornerstone training program. “We’re always looking for eager, hardworking men and women with a good attitude and mechanical aptitude,” Spears says. “We’re successful because we’ve built our business on reputation and trust, which begins by hiring great people.” Cornerstone phones are answered 24/7, and technicians are available around the clock, including weekends and holidays. What’s Cookin’ It’s Independence Day, please pass the potato salad By Betsy Crisp
Special to The Laker/Lutz News
S
ome foods conjure up special memories. And, for me, that’s true about potato salad. During the summer of 1962, when I was 7 ½ years old, my parents took the family tent camping across the United States. I remember how friendly the people were at all the various campsites, and how one neighbor brought over a bowl of potato salad to share with us. Immediately, I proclaimed “this ‘white’ potato salad is my favorite!” It wasn’t a reflection on my dear mother’s cooking, but her potato salad was always of the “yellow” (traditional) variety because it included yellow mustard and eggs. This was the first time that I had tasted the “white” version, which I later learned was a Greek potato salad. It is still my favorite, today, although red potato salad, with dill, ranks a close second. Potato salad is a staple at many summer outings and celebrations, such as picnics, family reunions, Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day, to name a few. Indeed, chances are that a bowl of potato salad will grace many tables during Fourth of July celebrations this week. Potatoes are nutritious, too. They are an excellent source of Vitamin C (30% of your daily recommended value), a good source of Potassium (15% of your recommended daily

BOND, from page 1A of the Library, said libraries make a huge difference in the quality of life for Pasco residents. “Our library system is a wonderful, wonderful service we provide our citizens,” she said. “We’re really reaching out to provide many more services.” Voters will mark a simple yes or no response for each bond on the ballot. About $132 million would be collected in total for the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office to build a 1,000-bed expansion of the existing Land O’ Lakes Detention Center. About $1.5 million would be collected in the first year, with the amount increasing to about $7.5 million in the third year. At times, the jail houses more than 1,800 inmates in a facility built for about 1,400 inmates. Pasco is under a judicial order to come up with a plan to resolve the overcrowding, before the inmate count reaches 1,900. “That means either letting inmates walk or coming up with another solution,” said Bob Goehrig, Pasco’s budget director. County officials estimate costs of $4 mil-
lion to $6 million annually to temporarily house inmates in on-site trailers, or offsite at jails in other counties. Funding for this is included in the draft 2019 budget. The fire rescue bond would collect about $70 million in total. The funds would pay for nine fire stations, either new or refurbished, as well as for equipment and staffing. Goehrig said some stations were built in the 1970s when the county relied on volunteers, rather than full-time firefighters. Parks would receive about $20 million to help with a backlog of about $26 million in deferred maintenance. The county’s budget in recent years has included as much as $1.5 million for maintenance at parks in danger of closing. The approximately $18.6 million bond for libraries would pay for repairs, renovations, equipment and upgrades at seven branch libraries. Pasco County Commissioner Kathryn Starkey noted that the annual cost to most homeowners for parks and libraries would be $2.55 and $2.35, respectively. “To me, it’s just critical if these pass,” she said. “I’m hoping the public will look at these as wise investments.”

and support new staff when it loses current employees, Beaudoin said. “What’s our risk/reward? What’s our return on investment?” the school board member asked. The district also needs to consider issues such as “the time it takes to get someone to their peak performance,” Beaudoin continued.“Not increasing salaries is hurting us in other ways.” Board vice chairwoman Alison Crumbley agreed:“It has a snowball effect.” Browning said: “I would love to find money for salary increases for instructional, SRPs, administrators, everybody.” But, the superintendent said the state did not provide enough money to make that happen. He noted that Hillsborough County’s school district is providing large salary increases, but it is cutting hundreds of jobs to cover the costs. “I, as a superintendent, am not ready to make a recommendation to this board that
JOBS, from page 1A pects to retain about 160 existing jobs, largely from positions currently held at several locations, including the Atlanta area and Connecticut. In addition to serving as global headquarters,TouchPoint Medical also will be the site for its American operations. “When you mention the words ‘global headquarters,’ it fires us all up,” said Pasco County Commissioner Jack Mariano. The impetus to relocate began with the company’s acquisition of Promedica Inc., located in Oldsmar, in 2016. Promedica designs and manufactures custom medical carts and assemblies. However, the facilities in Oldsmar didn’t meet TouchPoint Medical’s expanding needs, said Brian McNeill, president of the parent company,TouchPoint Inc. “It’s not an ideal location,” O’ Neill said.“It wasn’t designed for what it currently is used for.” TouchPoint searched for suitable new locations and settled on Pasco County. “We are really making a statement here,” said O’ Neill.“The medical business is a huge platform for us.” TouchPoint, the parent company, is privately owned and focuses on long-term investments, and acquisition of high-growth businesses in manufacturing and technology. TouchPoint Medical offers hardware and software solutions for health care providers in 100 countries around the world. Products include medical workstations, mobile carrier systems and wall mount systems.
we start cutting positions, critical positions in the schools, to give raises to remaining staff,” Browning said. “We’re not cutting positions this year. Everybody, and I’ll just say it, ought to be thankful they have a job, based on the funding we received from the state. “It’s unfortunate that they did not provide the dollars that we needed in order to continue to improve salaries,” the superintendent said. State lawmakers claim that they provided record funding for school districts, Browning said,“what they stop short of saying is they’re also telling you how to spend it. “If you look at that, almost $4 million is going to the safe school allocation and the mental health,” he said. Plus, about $5.3 million of the state funding is going to charter schools. Browning said the district’s salaries have improved in recent years, but the funding is not there to improve them again this year. But, he acknowledged Beaudoin’s and Crumbley’s concerns. “We know we’ve got to get our salaries competitive. I know that,” Browning said. The company also is a major supplier of automated medication dispensing equipment. The Pasco County Commission on June 19 approved about $1.7 million in incentives for TouchPoint Medical. Over time, county officials project the direct or indirect creation of nearly 300 jobs, with total salaries of about $252 million. An estimated $125 million will be contributed to the Gross County Product. Included in the incentive package: • About $464,000 to be paid over eight years in return for providing new jobs • Up to $150,000 in payments or credits for permitting fees • An estimated $980,000 in property tax rebates over 10 years • $100,000 in reimbursable employee training costs Some of the funds come from the Penny for Pasco program. TouchPoint Medical will partner with AmSkills as part of training and recruitment. AmSkills is a Tampa Bay initiative that helps high school students, adults and veterans learn manufacturing job skills. “It’s feeding the (job) pipeline,” said Pasco County Commissioner Kathryn Starkey. Pasco’s workforce played a role in luring TouchPoint Medical to the area, said Bill Cronin, chief executive officer of the PEDC. The first question company executives usually ask is does the area have a skilled, diverse workforce, Cronin added. “They see this workforce is getting trained,” he said.“It seems we’re doing something right when the workforce is so attractive.”

Wesley Chapel dojo heads to karate nationals By Kevin Weiss

T
he 2018 AAU/USA Karate National Championships kick off this week in Fort Lauderdale — and one local dojo will be well-represented. Wesley Chapel’s Keiko Shin Karate Academy (KSKA) is sending 22 athletes, ranging in ages 6 to 18, to square up against more than 3,000 elite, top karate competitors from the United States and beyond. The event runs from June 27 to June 30 at the Broward County Convention Center and draws competitors from all across the U.S., as well as from Israel, Poland, Russia and South America. The academy, located at 3753 Bruce B. Downs Blvd., is no stranger to the national stage. In 2015, KSKA took 20 students to the AAU nationals in Raleigh, North Carolina, and returned with 34 medals, including 22 gold medals. The next year, the team claimed 17 medals at nationals. Under the instruction and guidance of their sensei, Ernesto Fuentes, this year’s group has undergone rigorous preparation, enduring various types of cross-training, cardio, yoga and intense hours of traditional Shotokan karate, fine-tuning speed, agility, reaction times and more. Since the beginning of summer, training has consisted of many 10-hour days, often from 10 am. to 8 p.m. Alongside the fitness and technical components, Fuentes has coached his students on motivational techniques, to help them maximize their potential. “I don’t believe that we have another academy, at least not in the state of Florida, that’s training so many hours,” said Fuentes, an International 5th Dan Karate Instructor who’s been teaching the sport since 1983. “We believe the training is going to pay off.” Several KSKA athletes are making their return to AAU nationals, including 15-yearold Lauren Anderson and 18-year-old Destiny Walls. In 2015, Anderson, then 12, won a gold medal in the Kumite (sparring) beginner division. The following year, she placed second in the Kata (form) novice division. An advanced brown belt, she’s hoping for similar results. Meantime, she’s excited to cheer on 21 of her peers. “It’s really nice to watch everyone (succeed),” said Anderson, who attends Wiregrass Ranch High School.“I like to go and support as many people as possible.” She also noted: “It’s really nice to see them excel, but it’s also nice to be there and to help them when they fall or don’t do as well.” Anderson said nationals is “almost the

same as other competitions, but it’s just bigger. “It gets nerve-wracking,” she said,“(but) it makes you better, because you have more people (to compete against).” Walls, meanwhile, earned a third-place finish in the Kata intermediate division at 2016 nationals. A black belt,Walls is striving for gold this time around. With thousands of other top athletes looking on,Walls said she expects to feel an adrenaline rush when it’s her turn to compete. “You’re so nervous, but at the same time when you get at the mat, the nervousness goes away, and you’re ready to go,”Walls said.
KARATE OFFERS PHYSICAL, SOCIAL BENEFITS At KSKA and other dojos, karate is more than just a martial art sport — it’s a lifestyle. Anderson credits it for boosting her confidence and self-esteem, as well as her composure. “I used to be super sensitive, like certain things would get to me really easily, but now I’ve learned to take control of my emotions and stuff,”Anderson said. The sport’s benefits also translate to the classroom, she said. “It helps you with not only being physically active, but it also helps you mentally,” she added.“My grades weren’t very good before I came here, and now I have straight As, As and Bs.”
Karate also transformed Wall’s life, since she signed up more than eight years ago. Wall said she was headed down the wrong path, getting into trouble and performing poorly in school — but karate gave her a positive outlet and a sense of belonging. Over the years, she’s become an honor roll student and now has aspirations to become a nurse once she graduates from Cypress Creek Middle High School in 2019. “I wasn’t really focused and my self-esteem had a lot to do with it. Since I started karate, it’s helped me,”Walls said. “I’m able to talk to (people), which I used to never be able to do that. I’m able to go out and learn, and just keep going and not quit,” she said. Fuentes said Walls has morphed from a shy, insecure girl into a leader — “being the person that she wanted to be and we all want to see in a child.” Now, one of the dojo’s most experienced students, Walls assists Fuentes in the afterschool program as a youth instructor. “I love now that I teach,”Walls said.“I love helping the little ones, being able to show them what family is and how to grow with each other.” Fuentes, who has a master’s degree in child psychology, explained the sport’s structure, plus the discipline and dedication required to master it, aids in social and intellectual development. Fuentes trains more than 200 students at KSKA and each must maintain at least a B av-

erage in school. “Karate works a different aspect, different segments of their brain,” Fuentes said. “It’s proven that the kids that practice karate are immediately better students in school. In a fraction of a second, they need to be able to think and be in position.” The sensei, too, incorporates a holistic approach in his karate teachings, encouraging students to believe in themselves, show compassion for others and avoid confrontation. Sportsmanship is emphasized, too. “It’s not about self-defense, it’s about selfesteem,” he said. “When you have self-esteem, you’re not going to let anybody mess with you, nobody bullies you, you’re OK if somebody looks at you weird; you have self-esteem, so you don’t care.” Parent Les Borowksi has witnessed the benefits karate has had on his two children, Nicholas, 12, and Olivia, 10 — both of whom will compete in AAU nationals. Borowski said his children have become more attentive at school, more respectful to adults and peers, and generally more helpful toward others since they became involved in karate. “This thing (karate) turns lives around,” Borowski said.“When I talk to other people who have kids, they think I’m some kind of marketing person (for karate).” While he’s not paid to tout it, he is enthusiastic: “Just find a good quality, traditional martial arts school and go for it,” Borowski said. alkers took an old-fashioned patriotic stroll during this year’s SummerFest in Zephyrhills. The charity walk was a new element at the festival, but is expected to become an annual event. The walk raised money to benefit hospice patients and families, with suggested donations of $10 for adult walkers and $5 for kids. The walk took place around the lake, shortly before the fireworks display at sunset.
“We are honored to be invited to take part in the festivities at SummerFest, and I think the Old-Fashioned Patriotic Stroll will be a nice addition to the family friendly atmosphere,” Linda Ward, president and chief executive officer of Gulfside Hospice & Pasco Palliative Care, said in a news release. SummerFest, a free event, took place from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., at Zephyr Park, 38116 Fifth Ave., in Zephyrhills. Other activities at SummerFest included dance and watermelon-eating contests, food vendors, bounce houses, family games and a crafter area.
Al Fernandez, the master of ceremonies for Zephyrhills SummerFest, allows his 4-month-old old son, Julian, to try on his patriotic hat.
Ruth Eustice and Holly Delgado pose with their flags. Delgado’s father made the ultimate sacrifice when he died during the Vietnam War.
Francine Brito from Spring Hill, and Digna Serrano of Wesley Chapel, took time to make the walk. Brito said Gulfside was good to her parents.
Carla Armstrong, director of philanthropy for Gulfside Hospice, welcomes participants and volunteers to Gulfside’s ‘Old-Fashioned Patriotic Stroll.’ It is expected to become an annual event. Behind Armstrong are tents of vendors taking part in Zephyrhills SummerFest.

Ozzie (poodle mix) was rescued from Seattle; Boscia (red doxie) was rescued from New York; and, the newest furbaby, Winston (brindle piebald doxie) came from Pasco County Animal Services in Land O’ Lakes in March. Winston was heartworm positive, but the staff at the shelter are working hard to treat him. The trio will ‘sea’ you out on the water!

Fourth of July safety tips for pets By Mary Rathman
mrathman@lakerlutznews.com
The Fourth of July for many is a time for lounging in the backyard, cooking out and watching fireworks with friends, family and furry friends. And, with that in mind, here are some guidelines from the American Kennel Club, petMD and the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) to help keep you pets from harm during the Independence Day holiday. Here’s a synopsis of their advice: • Remember, citronella insect-control products harm pets, too. Oil, candles, insect coils and other citronella-based repellants can be irritating toxins to pets. The result of inhalation can cause severe respiratory illnesses, such as pneumonia, and ingestion can harm the nervous system. Insect repellant should not be applied to pets. Sunscreen also is not recommended, as it can cause drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and lethargy. • Lighter fluid and matches are harmful to pets. The ASPCA lists chlorates as a harmful chemical substance found in some matches and, if ingested, can cause difficulty in breathing, damage blood cells or cause kidney disease. Pets could sustain skin irritation on contact if exposed to lighter fluid, respiratory problems if inhaled and gastric problems if ingested. • Don’t give your pet table food. Keep your pet on its normal diet. Avoid scraps from the grill. Certain foods, such as onions, avocado, grapes, raisins, coffee, and
salt and yeast dough, are hazardous for dogs and cats. • Never use fireworks around pets. Exposure to lit fireworks can result in severe burns and/or trauma to an animal’s face and paws. Even unused fireworks can pose a danger. Many types contain toxic substances, including arsenic, potassium nitrate and other heavy metals. • Keep pets away from glow jewelry. While not highly toxic, excessive drooling and gastrointestinal irritation can result if a pet chews and swallows the plastic glow jewelry. Intestinal blockage could occur from swallowing large pieces of the plastic. • Have your pet properly identified. Pets can manage to break loose and become lost during celebrations. Consider fitting your pet with microchip identification; an ID tag with the pet’s name or your phone number, or both; and have a recent picture of your pet available. National ID Your Pet Day is July 1. • Leave your pet at home. The safest place for your pet is at home instead of a crowded, unfamiliar, noisy place. Dogs can be startled by loud fireworks. Keep your pet in a safe room, and block outside sights and sounds by lowering the blinds and turning on the TV, or playing soothing music. If your pet is crate-trained, put it in the crate and cover it with a blanket for security. Pets should not be kept in the backyard or in a locked car. • Alcohol can poison pets. A pet can become dangerously intoxicated, go into a coma or, in severe cases, die from respiratory failure if it ingests alcohol. Even beer is toxic, as fermented hops and ethanol are poisonous to dogs and cats.

SPROUTS MARKET COMING? Sprouts Farmers Market, an Arizona-based natural and organic grocery store, is the anchor for a proposed redevelopment of the former Winn Dixie plaza on the northeast corner of Collier Parkway and State Road 54, according to a pre-application filed by Benderson Development. Developers had a scheduled meeting on June 18 with the Pasco County planning department. Pre-application meetings usually are the first step in the process prior to submitting plans and seeking permits. A site plan shows an approximately 34,000-square-foot building designated for Sprouts Farmers Market. In addition, two more buildings, of about 17,500 square feet and 16,200 feet, are marked for retail/restaurants. Winn-Dixie representatives announced in March, the company would close about 100 stores nationwide, as part of its bankruptcy restructuring strategy, including six in the Tampa Bay area. Why go to an emergency center that’s connected to a hospital? What if you need the rest of the hospital?
When it comes to your health, it’s better to be safe than sorry. We don’t want to risk our patients’ lives by transferring them to a different hospital for emergency surgery. Here, if you need to be rushed to surgery, it’s down the hall, not down the road. If you need a pint of blood, no problem, we’re connected. The best place to go during your emergency is a facility designed to handle any emergency. And that’s right here at BayCare’s St. Joseph’s Hospital-North. For more information: BayCareRightCareRightPlace.org
Not sure if you need the ER? Ask HealthNav. Download the app and find the right care.
