By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com
The City of Zephyrhills has unveiled its proposed budget for fiscal year 2019-20 — totaling more than $67 million. The $67,043,615 draft budget is based on a tentative tax rate of 6.35 mills previously approved by the Zephyrhills City Council. The draft budget was shared during an Aug.
12 council meeting. Based on the 6.35 millage rate, the total budget for the new fiscal year will be roughly $16.4 million for the city’s 16 departments (city council, administration, economic development, finance, human resources, planning, information technology, police, dispatch, fire, building & code enforcement, library, equipment maintenance, storm water, streets, parks & facilities).
Remaining money necessary for the 2019-20 budget will come from other funding sources, including state revenues, county shared funds franchise fees, utility fees and grants. The draft shows the city’s police department has the largest departmental budget at over $3.9 million, followed by the fire deSee BUDGET, page 11A

Five-year-old Joshua Cortes was eager to begin his first day of kindergarten at Pine View Elementary School in Land O’ Lakes. The youngster was beaming as his parents took his picture near a welcome sign at the school — the perfect prop for a photo op. A little while later, as buses rolled into the bus loop, Pine View staff greeted students as they exited the bus. They saw many familiar faces, and they offered kind remarks, welcoming students
and commenting on such things as a new haircut or new pair of shoes. Meanwhile, across campus, teachers were ready for another year. Art teacher Kimber White expressed enthusiasm about teaching at Pasco County’s first officially authorized International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. The IB PYP highly regards the arts, encouraging creativity and innovation, across the disciplines. Third-grade teacher Monica Woods aimed to set a positive tone for the children See SCHOOL, page 11A

Patrick Pinnone was wrapping up a fiveyear stint in the U.S. Marines when he heard about a training program offered by Home Builders Institute — an educational arm of American Home Builders. It was exactly what he was looking for, as he prepared to make the transition to civilian life. But, there was a problem. The program wasn’t being offered at Camp Lejeune, the Marine base in Jacksonville, North Carolina, where he was stationed. It was available at Fort Bragg, an Army base just west of Fayetteville, North Carolina, two hours away from his chain of See TRIP, page 11A

Health and Wellness Fair focuses on the elderly By Brian Fernandes bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com
The Alzheimer’s Association, offers this list of 10 early warning signs:
A free community Health and Wellness Fair, held recently in Land O’ Lakes, focused on services that are available to the elderly, as they face changes in mind and body. The Aug. 1 event was hosted by Keystone Place at Terra Bella, 2200 Livingston Road, which offers residential options for independent living, assisted living and memory care. Bryan D’Onofrio spoke at the event on behalf of the North Tampa Behavioral Health Hospital. The Wesley Chapel facility serves people who are suffering from issues such as depression, anxiety or substance abuse, by providing in-patient and out-patient services – including a geriatrics unit. Many of the elderly patients who are admitted are dealing with depression, D’Onofrio noted. “As we get older, things don’t work like they used to,” he said.“As those things hit us, we can suffer some depression.” At the behavioral health hospital, patients engage with a psychiatrist, therapist, social workers and licensed mental-health counselors, to receive the right treatment. Patients also partake in group therapy to keep social, and recreational therapy, such as board games, yoga and other exercises. They are encouraged to continue activities when released home, to help them stay positive, D’Onofrio said. Bayada Home Health Care and Bluestone Physician Services also participated in the event. These companies offer mobile services — providing medical care to residents in assisted living facilities, such as Keystone Place at Terra Bella in Land O’ Lakes. Tyler Patrick, marketing manager at Bayada, said that the goal of this type of care is to help prevent the need for hospitalizations. Patrick added that,“If you’ve got a resident that has a disease that’s becoming exacerbated, the doctor may want an RN (registered nurse) checking in on that resident two, three times a week to monitor [and] make sure the medications are working. Our nurses can come in and do that.” Assisted living facilities also provide a

safe and secure environment for those known to suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. Amanda Wood, a program manager at the Alzheimer’s Association, shared information that help individuals, or their loved ones, identify the disease. “One of the best things to do for noticing these signs, is to talk about it,” Wood said. “Go talk to your primary care physician.” She emphasized the importance of initiating the conversation, whether it’s the individual exhibiting the signs, or a loved one witnessing them. That person’s doctor can then refer them to a neurologist for further analysis. An ongoing consistency in these signs may be a red flag that can differentiate them from usual memory loss,Wood said. When a current or potential Alzheimer’s patient is living at home, it is also important to plan ahead for emergencies. Teresa Haver stood at the Alzheimer’s Family Organization booth and showed visitors one preparation technique – the Wanderer’s Reunification Program. This is a free kit made up of sterilized equipment used in helping locate a missing patient. “What you do is take the sterile pad and rub it on your loved one to get their scent, put it in the jar [and] seal it up,” Haver explained. The jar is then placed on top of the refrigerator and is good for seven years. Should the person go missing, the local sheriff’s department has already been
“Every time our heart beats, 25 percent of that blood goes to our brain,” Wood explained. “If we’re getting exercise, we’re getting more nutrient and oxygen-rich blood up to our brain.” Exercise can include such things as walking up stairs and dancing, she noted. Social activities, such as playing strategic games like chess, can help preoccupy and strengthen the mind, she said. Mediterranean and DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diets are good alternatives,Wood noted. These heart-healthy choices consist of nuts and grains, as well as foods high in protein and low in sodium. The Rev.Virginia Walsh, of Unity North Tampa Church, also shared her knowledge at the health and wellness fair. Proper nutrition can help lead to effective meditation practice,Walsh said. The Pasco County Tax Collector’s Office accepted donations from the public to purchase backpacks and school supplies for students in need during the month of July. The month-long campaign resulted in more than $17,233 in contributions for the cause, according to a release from Pasco County Tax Collector Mike Fasano’s office. Most of the money was spent on back-toschool supplies and backpacks, but some was used to support the ABC (Assist, Believe & Care) Program, which helps classroom teachers purchase the supplies and other items needed to help meet student needs. The Pasco Tax Collector’s Office has five branches in the county. Each office chose one school close to that office with a large percentage of children in need. Just before the school year started, staff
members from each office delivered a total of 500 backpacks with school supplies and six checks totaling $5,250 split among these schools: Calusa Elementary, Gulf Trace Elementary, Connerton Elementary, San Antonio Elementary, West Zephyrhills Elementary and Miracles schools. In the release, Fasano said,“Gone are the days when a notebook, a pencil and some book covers, often made out of old shopping bags, were what most kids needed. For families struggling to make ends meet the ‘back-to-school’ supply list can be a great burden. Our staff was honored to deliver backpacks full of supplies, as well as checks to six schools in Pasco County.” Fasano credited the hard work of his staff and the generosity of the community for lightening the burden of families and people in need.

All kids deserve same academic opportunities, Browning says By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com
Pasco Schools Superintendent Kurt Browning was addressing The Greater Pasco Chamber of Commerce, and he was on a roll. “Every child needs to have those same academic opportunities as kids in affluent neighborhoods,” Browning said, during the chamber’s breakfast meeting last week. “If we intend to educate our kids and really meet up with that whole idea of college, career and life readiness, we have got to look at every child in this district.” It’s not an easy feat, the superintendent added. “It takes a lot of effort, it takes a lot of resources, for the teachers in our district to really tailor education for every one of the students they touch,” he noted. Things aren’t the way they were in the past, he continued. “It used to be you had 25 kids in a classroom — either you got it or you didn’t get it. “We’ve shifted from all of that.We are really looking at individual kids, cycling back in, picking those kids up, reteaching things that need to be retaught — because at the end of the day, it’s not just about completing seat time, it’s about making sure that after 180 days our kids can master those standards — that they are college, career and life ready. “And, I mean life ready. This life will chew them up and spit them out if they’re not ready,” Browning said. Students must be challenged — and high expectations lead to better performance by all kids, not just smart kids, Browning added. “Let kids do the problem solving. Let them do the critical thinking. Let them own their learning,” Browning said. “The research shows if you put grade-

level assignments in front of kids, they will struggle — but guess what — they will learn it,” Browning said. He talked about the district’s efforts to introduce the Cambridge curriculum into more of its schools. It’s academically challenging, but can yield 100 percent Brighter Future scholarships from the state, for students passing seven assessments, Browning said. He talks about encounters he’s had with parents when he has been out and about in the community.
“I’ll be in Publix, pushing my cart in the produce section, filling it up. “They’ll say, ‘Are you Superintendent Browning?’ Browning:“I am.” (Parents) ‘I want you to know we had our daughter in Cambridge. She’s not going to be in Cambridge when she comes back from Christmas break.’ Browning: “Why not? Cambridge is a great program.” (Parents) ‘It’s just too hard.’ Browning: “I’m going, ‘Really. It’s too
hard. Life’s hard. “If everything is easy and simple, then where’s the learning? Where is the learning. “You struggle in school. You’re supposed to struggle. “It’s not supposed to be about proms and homecomings and football games on Friday night.“That’s part of the experience. “What it’s about is making sure you are ready to get out in this very, very tough world and survive,” Browning said. “If I have kids that can’t survive, then I have let you down. I’ve let this community down, and that is the message we’ve been preaching, over and over and over again. “If anything is worth having, it’s worth working for,” the superintendent said. Of course, Browning added, such high expectations requires teachers to think about the way that they’ve been delivering instruction in their classrooms, the superintendent added. And, that begs the question:“Are our kids worth it, to ensure that they get the very best education? “I’ll tell you what the answer to that question is,‘Absolutely, yes, they are worth it,’” Browning said. At the same time, excellence in teaching should be rewarded, Browning said. “We’ve got some of the most talented teachers in the state and they work tirelessly. My goal is trying to find more money to pay them a higher salary, so we can keep the very best. “I keep going to Tallahassee. I keep talking to the legislative delegation. We have got to pay teachers more, in order to keep great teachers here,” he said. The superintendent updated the crowd regarding ongoing construction projects, plans to introduce more rigorous programs in some West Pasco Schools, efforts to expand mental health services and ongoing work regarding school security.
New River Branch Library to close for remodeling The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report The New River Branch Library will be closing Oct. 1 to prepare for an extensive makeover, according to a Pasco County news release. The renovation is being paid for funding provided through a general obligation bond approved by voters in November 2018 to upgrade Pasco County’s seven branch libraries. Voters also approved general obligation bonds to pay for improvements to the county’s parks, to expand the county’s fire rescue services and to build a jail expansion. The New River Branch Library project is
expected to be completed by Summer 2020. The Centennial Park Branch Library in Hudson will be closed for renovations at the same time. The library projects will include updated technology, new outdoor spaces, more accessible parking, updated furnishings, high-efficiency air conditioning systems, high-speed internet and makerspaces. Fresh Italian Food To Go
By William Jacko Special to The Laker / Lutz News
Shortly after Charles and Nancy Frankulin began dating in 2003, they started working at Bosco’s Italian To Go! in Wesley Chapel. They never imagined that one day they would marry and buy the business. “We started dating in 2003 when we were seniors in high school, and have been together ever since,” Charles said. “I started at Bosco’s as a delivery driver when I was going to USF, and Nancy got a job as a cashier. We both worked here several years and, after college, moved onto different jobs. Then we both came back here about a year before the owners decided to sell, and since we always wanted to own our own business, this was a perfect fit.” The Frankulins retained Bosco’s original recipes, and have added many more menu items requested from their customers, including a rice-based, glutenfree pizza, ravioli with smoked mozzarella, baked chicken wings, and CinnaStix with a cannoli filling dipping sauce. The couple also started a suggestion box. “People actually drop suggestions into our box, which is why we now have Greek Salads and Tater Tots,” said Nancy. One of Bosco’s most unusual pizzas is its Swamp and Turf pizza — a combination of toppings that include steak and alligator bellies. “We went to a trade show and one of the vendors had farm-raised gator belly from Louisiana. We tried it, liked it, and thought that this is something no other Italian restaurant or pizzeria is going to have,” said Charles. “It so delicious, we also offer Gator Alfredo Pasta.” The Frankulins use the freshest
ingredients they can find, preferring small farmer markets like nearby Boyette Family Farms. “There’s nothing like going out and actually picking your own green peppers, bringing them back to the shop and chopping them up,” said Nancy. “We grate our own cheese and slice our own lunchmeat. We hand-make our meatballs, and of course, make our own pizza and bread dough —all done by hand.” The Frankulins are proud to be small business owners. “If you’re a small business, you usually have more of a heart,” said Nancy. “We’re out to make a living, not a killing, even if it’s sometimes hard to stay a mom-and-pop business with so many chain restaurants popping up. People try the new franchises, but come back to Bosco’s because our food is fresher, our service is better, and our prices are fair and affordable.” The Frankulins donate to a food pantry year-round, and also give back to the community with a toy drive at Christmas. As a Christian business, they value their employees and treat them well.

socks of all sizes. It is recommended that sneakers, shoes and socks be of a neutral color, but all new donation items will be accepted. The campaign will not accept flip-flops or open-toe shoes. Pasco County Tax Collector Mike Fasano said, in a release, “It is heartbreaking to know that children come to school without socks or shoes in good repair,” and he encourages everyone who is able, to stop by one of the offices to leave a donation. The tax collector’s office locations will be the collection sites for donations between now and Oct. 25. For office locations, visit PascoTaxes.com. These kits can help save lives in Pasco schools By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com
A safety measure has been added to Pasco County high schools that’s aimed to help save lives during a mass casualty or active shooter situation. The schools now have bleed control kits — designed to help prevent victims from bleeding out before emergency responders arrive. The kits contain items such as tourniquets, blood-clotting dressings and casualty extraction litter, CPR mask, disposable gloves, trauma shears and a bleeding control instruction card. The kits are assembled using military grade components and based on the standards established by the American College of Surgeons. The vacuum-sealed kits are stocked in a LIFE Station, or a surface-mounted storage cabinet strategically located throughout schools, similar to AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) and fire extinguisher cabinets. Pasco County Schools, the Pasco Sheriff’s Office, Pasco Tax Collector’s Office and Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point recently partnered on a fundraising drive to bring LIFE Stations and bleed kits to each public high school and technical school countywide. Enough donations were raised for each school to receive one LIFE Station, which holds up to five kits, according to the sheriff’s office. The initial cost for stations and kits was $250,000. Each kit costs approximately $600 to $700. The school district and sheriff’s office are now requesting donations to purchase more kits for the county’s 83 middle and elementary schools. Efforts are also being made to bring them to places of worship and other public spaces. Someone can die from bleeding out in 30 seconds to 45 seconds, so the effort is aimed at saving lives, Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco said, during an Aug. 13 media conference on the bleed kits initiative. The bleed kits go beyond the scope of
COURTESY OF PASCO SHERIFF’S OFFICE
Pasco County Schools and the Pasco Sheriff’s Office are participating in the ‘Stop the Bleed’ campaign, a national initiative that aims to train and empower civilians to act swiftly and effectively in trauma situations, such as active shooter incidents. As part of the campaign, the sheriff’s office and emergency personnel trained school nurses to use bleed control kits and other measures in initial trauma management.
a shooting or other violent attack, the sheriff said. “It’s not just about active shooters,” Nocco said. “It could be about a traffic crash. It could be somebody fell, and it hurt them and it cut them badly. Those are the types of things that we want to make sure we get out there, that this isn’t just because of that worst-case scenario, this could be about some injury that occurred any day.” “Just having one (station) in each facility may not be enough, you may need multiple ones,” he said. Before the school year began, the sheriff’s office and emergency personnel trained school nurses to use the kits and other life-saving measures in initial trauma management. The training was part of a broader “Stop the Bleed” national initiative, which aims to train and empower civilians to act swiftly and effectively in trauma situations, such as active shooter incidents. Pasco School District nurses will be training other school employees how to use the kits, officials say.
Meanwhile, the sheriff’s office also is creating a bleed kit instruction video for students. “It’s like teaching a child to call 911. Now, we’re going to teach them to stop the bleed,” Nocco said. Pasco Schools Superintendent Kurt Browning said the LIFE Stations and bleed kits create “another layer of protection in the horrible event of something going on in our schools.” Browning emphasized the urgency in such situations:“It’s a matter of seconds before an individual could bleed out, and we want to make sure that we have the tools there to help prevent loss of life.” Since the Parkland school shooting claimed the lives of 17 students and faculty members in February 2018, the Pasco school district has bolstered its safety protocols through hiring armed safety guards, requiring stricter identification protocols, and installing more secure door locks, among other procedures. “We work hard in keeping all of our children safe in this district,” Browning

said.“I will say, we have been in a leader in the state where other districts have looked at us and said,‘We want to do it very similar to the way you’re doing it.’” He added, “Parents are just naturally concerned about the safety of their kids when we put them on our buses in the morning and get them to our schools, and they expect them to be safe, and I expect our kids to be safe.” For more information, visit PascoSheriffCharities.org/stop-the-bleeding-2/.

SCHOOL, from page 1A entering in her class. The room was cheerful, with warm touches, including this greeting: “Welcome to third grade, you’re going to love it here.” Assistant Principal Mary Reynolds, an educator for 30 years, said she never gets over the potential the beginning of a new school year represents. She gets so excited that she can never sleep the night before a first school day. Principal Kay Moore has a tradition. She holds an assembly and rings in the new year with an old-fashioned bell. It’s a time-honored ritual, signifying the start of something important, she said. As Pine View settled in for the day, first day scenes were taking place across the district. Parents were busy dropping their kids off, big yellow buses were picking up kids in subdivisions and school staffs were busy getting the 2019-2020 school year started. At Cypress Creek Middle High in Wesley Chapel, students streamed on to campus,
where they were greeted by staff members, who directed traffic and answered questions. Pasco County Schools Superintendent Kurt Browning said he’d heard good reports across the district. “It has been a good week. It has been an exceptionally good week,” he told members of The Greater Pasco Chamber of Commerce, during a breakfast meeting. “As I’ve traveled to schools, I’ve talked to teachers, I’ve talked to parents, I’ve talked to principals, I’ve talked to kids — and almost without exception they’ve said,‘You know, it seems like one of the smoothest school starts we’ve had. “There hasn’t been all of the hateful, mean Twitter, Facebook chatter out there — which people are so quick to get out on social media, and start trashing people without the facts,” Browning added. He also noted that the school district continues to grow at a rapid pace. The school year began with about 1,300 more students than on the same day last year, he said, noting that’s the equivalent of a large district middle school.

BUDGET, from page 1A partment at roughly $2.8 million. A budget workshop is scheduled for Aug. 26. Public hearings on the proposed budget are scheduled for Sept. 9 and Sept. 23. Zephyrhills City Manager Billy Poe shared budget highlights during the meeting, including these items relating to employee benefits and compensation: • Total employee health care costs increased 9.7% • A proposed pay increase of 3.5% for all employees • An increase in cost of 15% for worker’s compensation costs • An increase in cost of 11% for property casualty expenses • Tuition reimbursement up to $2,500 annually, up to a maximum of $15,000 in total, for city employees Big ticket items in the budget include: • Six fully equipped police vehicles totaling $310,000 funded through Penny for Pasco • A $300,000 side-loader truck for sanitation • A $267,000 final installment for a new fully outfitted fire truck, which has a total cost of $457,000 With talks ongoing with Pasco County regarding the possible consolidation of the Zephyrhills Fire Department into Pasco County Fire Rescue, the city manager told council members the new fire truck will be part of those broader negotiations, possibly to help offset MSTUs (Municipal Service Taxing Unit) levied through any merger. “The budgets were prepared as if the (fire) department is staying,” Poe said.“We don’t know which direction we’re going this moment, so it was budgeted to purchase that truck and that will be part of the conversation with the county. They’re aware of it, so we’ll continue that conversation.” Councilman Alan Knight told Poe the fire
TRIP, from page 1A command. Pinnone was not dissuaded. “I had to jump through hoops to get my chain of command to approve it,” he recalled. But, he was persistent and gained approval — and became the first Marine to complete the HBI training. And, the efforts he put forth during training led to an invitation for a trip to the White House. He went to the nation’s capital to attend a follow-up ceremony to the July 2018 Pledge to America’s Workers. That pledge was signed by President Donald Trump and many trade organizations, including the National Association of Home Builders and its workforce development arm, HBI, to show their commitment to create new jobs through apprenticeships, training programs, continuing education and so on. Pinnone, who lives in Dade City, enjoyed the event. “It was surreal. I never expected I would ever get a chance to go into the White House,” he said, adding he couldn’t believe he was in the same room as numerous top-ranking government officials, including the president and Vice President Mike Pence.

truck “ought to be a real strong thing in our negotiation” with the county. “We contracted it. We put our name on it. We’ve got it. We’re going to have to eat that, so we’ve just got to understand that that’s going to be part of our negotiations,” Knight said. Councilman Lance Smith said he’s pleased that the budget has more funds allocated toward employee education. “I am glad to see more money put into training employees,” Smith said. “I mean, I think that’s something really important. I think that’s something we haven’t been doing, and I think the more educated an employee is, I think the more productive they’ll be.”
A PUSH FOR MORE POLICE TRAINING
Along those lines, Council president Ken Burgess questioned whether the Zephyrhills Police Department allocated
The president was there for the ceremony, but left quickly after it ended. Pence stayed longer, circulating around the room to shake hands and pose for photos. Pinnone said he also was impressed by HBI’s training program. He said students in the program learned skills required for residential construction work, including carpentry, foundations, siding, painting, roofing and drywall. After finishing the HBI program, he picked up three jobs — including one with Lyle Bleachers Inc., which builds bleachers for gymnasiums and athletic fields throughout Florida. David Lyle, president of Lyle Bleachers Inc., said the HBI training served Pinnone well. “I think it definitely prepared him for working in our field, which is a construction-type industry,” Lyle said. He applauded HBI’s efforts and said he’d like to see an increase in such programs. “We need hands-on skilled laborers in this country,” Lyle said. Pinnone said the value of the experience went beyond the skills he learned through the training. His main takeaway? “The initiative you put out, will pay off in the end,” Pinnone said. Pinnone, a member of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, is now enrolled at Saint Leo University, where he is studying accounting.

enough funding for more advanced, handson training. The draft budget shows $22,000 for police training programs. “I bring it up every year about the police training. Especially in light of recent events, I want to make sure that in our training, we do more than just get on the computer and click a few buttons,” Burgess said. “There’s a lot of things that can happen that we don’t want our officers to experience that for the first time in real life,” he said. Zephyrhills Police Chief Derek Brewer pointed out training opportunities are often trust funded or free, but said the issue is more about being able to manage overtime associated with training. The department has sent a handful of sworn officers to receive instructor training, so it is able to offer more in-house training programs, the chief said. “Whether it’s advanced, in service or on-
line or whatever it is, I can tell you we’ve been actively trying to send people to as much as we can,” he said. Brewer also told the council the police department is considering participation at an active shooter response training center in Arizona. “We were looking for something a little closer, but, of course, if that’s what we’ve got to do then that’s what we’ll use,” Brewer said. In other action, the council approved the submission of three appropriations requests for projects to be sponsored by State Rep. Randy Maggard and State Sen. Wilton Simpson in the Florida Legislature: • $2 million septic to sewer project to a residential subdivision and homes along Sixth Avenue and Armstrong Street, and decommissioning existing septic tanks. The project will affect 67 existing properties with potential for expansion to additional properties in the future. • $1.2 million for an indoor/covered tennis facility at the Sarah Vande Berg Tennis & Wellness Center site. The indoor facility would also be used for other sports, such as soccer, and banquets and ceremonies. • $2 million for the purchase of roughly 1.3 acres of land at the Zephyrhills Municipal Airport for the extension of runway 01-19.The cost also includes relocating Skydive City’s existing RV parking east of Skydive Lane. The city also is considering a fourth appropriations request for $2.5 million, to be used for U.S. 301/Pretty Pond Road intersection improvements. Those improvements would involve the relocation of a traffic signal that is currently located at Merchants Square and Townview shopping centers to a new location, at the intersection at Pretty Pond Road. Council members discussed that topic at length. The aim of the improvements would be to speed up potential commercial development in the area.

Lutz softball continues to fine-tune its offerings By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com
F
ollowing a successful spring campaign, Lutz Softball is gearing up for another season of fastpitch softball next month — with a number of recent additions and
upgrades. Formerly known as the Lutz Leaguerettes, the ages 4 to 18 recreational girls softball organization has expanded its fastpitch offerings since scrapping slowpitch play altogether a few years ago. The league has introduced a five-on-five, infield-only 6U division to guide younger players through basic fundamentals, including the shift from T-ball to coaches’ fastpitch. The new division had a test run last year for the first time — to beneficial results, said Jennifer Parry, league president. “It’s been pretty successful, so we’re going to do it again this season,” she said. “The girls that maybe have a shorter attention span, they stay more involved, they learn the basics of the game and hitting.” The league also is finding ways to cater to more experienced players. Lutz Softball implemented Xtreme Fastpitch divisions in conjunction with its parent program, Babe Ruth League, which is designed for higher-level players to have more organized competitive play against other Babe Ruth teams throughout Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties. Parry said the Xtreme league “is for the girls that are either trying to get a little better for high school or that just are a little better than most, they can play there and kind of fine-tune some of those skills that they may not get to practice on a regular rec league.” Introduced last year, Xtreme Fastpitch has helped “bridge the gap” between recreational and travel ball play as a more affordable option for families, the league president said. She noted some former Lutz Softball players who previously left for travel leagues have since returned to participate in the league’s Xtreme divisions. “It’s been pretty successful,” Parry said. “Travel ball really decimates rec ball, so it’s
really kind of a step in the right direction to kind of keep girls locally, playing with the girls they go to school with and not put so much pressure on the parents to travel all over. “We’ve had some girls that went to travel and where they might be girls that get more play in our Xtreme division, (but) in their travel team they don’t play or they maybe play one inning. They’re all good players, but there’s just a difference in playing time and the community and who you’re playing with, friends with school,” she said. Lutz Softball transitioned solely to fastpitch play in 2016. Dwindling registration figures forced the league to drop slowpitch, after 37 years. They were the last recreational league in the county to offer that style of the sport. Parry acknowledged the drastic move to fastpitch has been challenging, particularly in terms of training players the methods of pitching and catching. So, this season the league is offering free pitching lessons to all registered players, including clinics for beginners and advanced. Parry put it like this:“It was a big change, especially for some of our older girls who had been pitching for a couple of years because the motion is different, and so we’re still trying to get through that transition. …I think still our biggest hurdle is just getting those girls trained in that area, because when you don’t have a pitcher or a catcher, those games can get really rough, because they’re just walking girls around. It was our biggest struggle in the transition and continues to be our biggest struggle.” That aside, Parry said Lutz Softball’s registration numbers have been on the increase since the move to exclusively fastpitch. The league is believed to be the county’s second-largest girls recreation softball league, behind FishHawk . The Lutz league featured about 200 players and 17 teams in the spring — up from about 160 players a few years ago. Parry expects those numbers to remain steady for the upcoming fall season then “go up a little bit” next spring. To generate more interest this season, the league is offering a $50 registration discount to families that bring new families

and players to the league. Said Parry,“We’re just trying to get some new families to our parks. We find that once they get there, they really enjoy it.We have a very family like atmosphere and try to include everybody.” Performance-wise, Lutz Softball is coming off a spring season that saw three of its all-star teams compile strong showings in postseason play. Its 8U team finished second in districts, third in regionals and fifth in states; 12U placed second at a Babe Ruth all-star warmup tournament in FishHawk; and 16U won the FishHawk warm-up tournament and finished second at districts. Besides on-the-field play, the league’s

Cleaning up the boulevard There are two types of vultures in Florida: the black vulture and the turkey vulture. Both are often called buzzards or carrion crows, but are not related to either family. A group of vultures is called a committee, venue or volt. In flight, a flock of vultures is a kettle, and when the birds are feeding together at a carcass, the group is called a wake. Sharon Thompson of Wesley Chapel caught this ‘wake’ cleaning things up on Mansfield Boulevard, off State Road 56.
Make pets part of the back-to-school plan By Mary Rathman mrathman@lakerlutznews.com
The back-to-school season is in full swing and veterinarians are encouraging families to make their pets part of their schedule changes, too. Essentials PetCare wants families to remember that their four-legged family members may need some extra support. Now that more time is focused on schoolwork and extracurricular activities,
some pets, especially dogs, may experience stress due to routine changes, according to Essentials PetCare, in a release. Dogs may become upset when separated from family members and spending more time alone at home. Separation anxiety can show through signs of nervousness, destructive behavior or barking. Essentials PetCare offers these tips to deal with a stress-inducing environment:
• Practice days, when the family goes through the motions of waking up early, packing lunchboxes and leaving the house, can help pets slowly transition to a new routine. • Schedule weekly enrichment activities for pets, like going on walks or visit to a doggie day care or dog park. • When leaving a pet at home, help calm them by playing soothing sounds on a radio or giving them safe pet toys to play with.

• Make sure pets have enough food and clean water before you leave each day. • When leaving a pet for more than a few hours, consider hiring a dog walker for bathroom breaks. And, just as children need regular medical exams and vaccinations, pets should also be up to date on their vaccinations and regular veterinary appointments. It is especially important to make sure pets’ vaccines are current if they visit doggie daycares, kennels or dog parks.

PET PAWS AVOID POSSIBLE PET POISONINGS
BluePearl pet hospitals have noticed a surge of back-to-school related pet poisonings and injuries, many of which involve kids’ backpacks and lunchboxes, according to a release. Some dogs can unzip a backpack and lunchbox, and help themselves to the contents. BluePearl urges pet owners to designate an area in their homes for backpacks and lunchboxes, to keep them out of the reach of pets. If this is not possible, or the items cannot be kept behind a closed door, the child should discard any leftover food before returning home from school. Pet owners should be aware of common lunchbox and backpack toxins and dangers. Top lunchbox toxins include gum (which can contain xylitol); grapes and raisins; macadamia nuts; onions; moldy food; and cold packs used to keep food cool. The top backpack toxins/dangers include pencils; arts and crafts; small toys; ADHD medications;Albuterol inhalers; overthe-counter medications, such as NSAIDS and acetaminophen; homemade slime; and hand sanitizer.
TIME WITH PETS PROVIDES BENEFITS
Seniors are especially vulnerable to social isolation, and a new survey by Home Instead Inc., found regular interaction with animals can help to reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation in older adults. Terrie Hoops, senior care expert and owner of Home Instead Senior Care in Sarasota, said in a release,“A simple act like petting a dog, holding a cat or feeding a bird can bring so much joy to a senior who may be feeling lonely.” Other survey results found that nearly half of older pet owners cited stress relief, a sense of purpose and exercise as leading benefits to owning a pet. Pets also can provide loving companionship for older adults who would prefer to age in place. “There is a strong connection between heart health and pet ownership or interaction,” Steve Feldman, executive director of the Human Animal Bond Research Institute, said in a release. While there are many benefits to owning a pet later in life, Home Instead also found that even occasional interactions, such as spending time with pets owned by family, friends or neighbors, prove to be

beneficial for older adults. Home Instead Senior Care offers free information and tips to help seniors incorporate animals into their lives. To learn more, visit PetsAndSeniors.com.
