Less waiting where it matters most – our emergency room. We work diligently to have you initially seen by a medical professional* in 30 minutes – or less.
Dozens of speakers signed up to draw attention to topics they think are important at Pasco County’s annual legislative delegation meeting. The topics ranged from fracking to Medicaid; the opioid epidemic to immigration; medical marijuana to homelessness; and, scores of budget requests. Some requests were for items vetoed by Gov. Rick Scott last year. Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco, for instance, asked legislators to renew his request for $4.3 million for the Thomas Varnadoe Forensic Center for Education and Research. The Adam Kennedy Forensics Field, also
known as a “body farm,” opened in May on land next to the Land O’ Lakes Detention Center, off U.S. 41.The facility is the seventh of its type in the nation. Construction money is needed for the indoor forensic center. The complex is planned jointly with the sheriff’s office, Pasco County, Pasco-Hernando State College, and the University of South Florida’s Institute for Forensics and Applied Science. “It is a critical piece for us,” Nocco said. The sheriff also noted that there already are international inquiries regarding training opportunities. The city of Zephyrhills also had a bigticket request. It’s asking for $3.25 million to help build the Sarah Vande Berg Memorial Tennis Center.
The planned tennis center includes eight soft courts, two hard courts and nine pickle ball courts. The city of Zephyrhills already has hired Pennsylvania-based Tennis P.R.O. LLC to operate and manage the complex. A pro shop, a multipurpose community room and two offices also are planned. “It’s gaining a lot of momentum,” said Todd Vande Berg, the city’s planning director.“It will bring in players from around the world, and Zephyrhills really will be a destination in the sports arena.” The complex is named for Vande Berg’s daughter, a tennis scholarship student at University of South Carolina, who died in a car accident. Seasonal carols, tinsel-draped trees and jolly Old St. Nick convey a time of merriment and joy, but the holidays can be difficult for those grieving a significant loss. To help people to cope with their sadness, Gulfside Hospice is offering free holiday grief support workshops on Dec. 7 in Zephyrhills and Dec. 12 in New Port Richey. Kelly Cavagnetto, a bereavement counselor, will be conducting the sessions, which will last about 90 minutes and will be the same in both places. They aim to provide some strategies to help people trying to navigate what can become an especially challenging emotional time. “The first holidays after somebody passes, there can be a lot of anxiety about the upcoming holiday,” Cavagnetto said.“There’s a lot of feeling unsure:‘I don’t want to decorate, but do I have to decorate? Should I decorate?’” Those who are grieving often worry whether familiar traditions or foods will trig-
ger a greater sense of sadness for them, the counselor said. Someone might say:“I don’t know if I can cook the same meal they enjoyed eating.” The grief session aims to give those grieving some tools, she said. “Our main goal is to sort of brace them for that, and help give them some of the coping skills to kind of get through the day,” she said. It’s a good idea to begin preparing, Cavagnetto said, because “Christmas, Hanukkah — those winter holidays are coming whether we want them to, or not. We can’t really avoid them.” In her session, she talks about the importance of “self-care.” Find ways to help reduce stress, she suggested, which can include listening to music, meditating, drawing or other techniques. It’s a good idea to have a family meeting to talk about expectations and needs, she said. The meeting can start something like this, she said:“We’ve had some big changes this year. This is how I’m feeling about it. What do you guys expect from me? What do

The Sally Langwah show was presented on Nov. 10 in the community center. This was a veteran tribute hosted by Gary Wilcox. The stage was decorated nicely with miniature flags placed several inches from each other and little bottles with a flag in the center, and blue and red surrounding it. The show started off when Gary Wilcox introduced Roy Langwah. Roy said a few words and then presented Sally Langwah who started the show singing “The Star Spangled Banner.” This was followed by “A Salute to the Armed Forces.” Because this was a patriotic show, she continued on with a song from each branch, such as the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Marines, Merchant Marines and the Air Force. These songs were sung while the ones who served in that particular branch stood to be recognized. Roy Langwah then came on dressed as Willie Nelson, with his signature pigtails and bandana. He sang his hit “All of Me,” plus “The City of New Orleans,” and he did a marvelous job. Sally then came back on stage in a long brunette wig and a red dress as Crystal Gayle and sang the hit tune “Don’t it Make my Brown Eyes Blue” and a Cristy Lane song entitled “One Day at a Time.” There was audience participation, and one cute segment when Barbara Livingston and Joan Fisher (both residents of Grand Horizons) joined Sally in performing a couple of songs by The Andrew Sisters, including “Beer Barrel Polka” and “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.” All three had the moves, and kept the audience swinging and clapping in their seats. It was some performance. Rich Fulton, Paul Oi, Dave Lawrence and Rick Huey were called up as war vets while the song “When I Dream” was sung by Sally. They were each presented with a pin, which was a lovely touch. Roy came out as Elvis Presley and shook hands with most of the audience while singing “I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You.” Sally came back on stage as Marilyn Monroe, told some jokes like only Marilyn could, and sang “I Want to be Loved by You” to Bill Sarver and “Happy Birthday” to Freddie. We also got treated to the hit song by Louis Armstrong called “What a Wonderful World.” Charo, the “coochi-coochi” girl came out to perform. This was a cute performance, and she called on Jim Leitzke to dance. Sally was dressed in a long blond wig, and in a lovely white and blue dress. Toward the end of the show, she had several people come to the front of the room to perform the “Electric Slide,” a line dance. The show ended with Sally singing “God Bless America,” and the entire audience sang along. This would have marked the end of the

show, but then Sally and Roy outdid themselves by continuing another half an hour with more singing and dancing. Everyone left on a very high note. The following morning, we had an eggin-a-bag breakfast, and 114 people were served. It was hosted by Paul and Freda Williams, and they had several volunteers, including Jim and Judi Leitzke, Sue and Galen Parker, Carol and Clayton George, and Doris Sutfin. Phyllis Jones provided the music, and everyone did a fabulous job. Before breakfast, Galen Parker said grace, while everyone bowed their heads in a moment of silence. After everyone enjoyed a hearty breakfast, Jim Leitzke presented a veterans program. The program started with the Pledge of Allegiance, and the entire audience stood. Jim then presented a special video entitled “My Name is America” by Todd Allen. The POW/MIA table and each item on the table was thoroughly explained. This table remembers all the military lost. Flags were then brought forward for each individual service. There are many vets from Grand Horizons, and as each branch was called, the vets who were there stood to be recognized. Thanks to the vets that served and gave us our freedoms. The afternoon ended with all singing “God Bless America.”

Jo Hopper and Lana McLaurin create a display of holiday carolers in the image of Thomas Edison and his family.
CLOTHING STYLES REVEAL HISTORY The hoop skirt for instance, Jo said, was in vogue in the 1860s, but as the country moved toward the 20th century, skirt styling transformed from the lavish hoops to the bustle and eventually to a silhouette. The style changes reflect changing economic times, she said. Less fabric was needed for the fitted style and, thus it was more affordable in the late 1800s. Jo’s first vintage collector piece was a brown taffeta servant’s dress — one of the pieces included in the current Victorian Stroll display. Lana’s zeal for collecting vintage clothing began with her interest in antiques. She purchased a passementrie-bedecked cape from an antique dealer in Winter Park, and one piece led to another. A seamstress herself, she said part of the fascination stems from the way the garments are constructed. She finds many of the pieces as interesting on the interior as they are on the exterior. European Royalty, particularly British monarchs, were highly influential in the world of fashion during the 1800s, both in Europe and in the United States. The Victorian age, which refers to the reign of Queen Victoria, was swayed by the queen’s personal style, behavior and modesty. Queen Victoria wore black for 40 years after her husband’s death, and subsequently her subjects and admirers frequently wore black, as well. However, Lana noted that black also was used as we use it today, and that our ‘little black dress’ had its equivalent in Victorian times. Queen Victoria set norms, even in the United States. The most widely circulated magazine in the United States after the Civil War, Godey’s Magazine, included regular articles about Queen Victoria, and incorporated fashion illustrations and a monthly pattern.

(Edison and family lodged at the hotel in 1900.) The tailor’s form (Edison image) depicts a long, sleek, black coat of weighted silk in perfect condition. At his side is a petite female partner in a vibrant red, light wool military style jacket over a slim black silk skirt. Lana pointed out the golf-themed gold buttons on the jacket that reveal the Mrs. Edison character had just returned from a round of golf. The second display depicts a nanny and two children on a breathtaking staircase that hints at the magnificent architecture of the hotel. Jo explained they had previously created a wedding scene in 2015 and a christening display in the same area in 2016—a sequential progression of the family’s development. The nanny is clothed in the brown, taffeta dress, her “going out’ dress. A governess or nanny would have worn two uniforms during the day in the Victorian era. Throughout the remainder of the museum, the exquisite vintage clothing displays of the duo enhance the stunning museum. For readers who would like to learn more about Victorian attire and behavior, Jo and Lana suggest the book, “Women’s Clothing in the Nineteenth Century” by C. Willett Cunnington.

enced fashion. She created a whirlwind quite similar to that of Princess Diana. Princess Alexandra was a beautiful, tall, 18-year-old when she was married at Windsor Castle in 1863. She had a long neck that was said to bare an unsightly scar from a childhood surgery. Alexandra wore high lace collars and multiple layers of pearls in a collier de chein “collar” necklace. The masses revered and copied Alexandra’s elegant style. It was also an era of modesty, Jo said. Gloves of net or leather were worn in public by women and men. “Flesh on flesh” was frowned upon, Lana said. Gloves also protected the precious fabrics from perspiration stains from dancing. Fabrics often were wools, brocades, damasks, silks, rayon and velvets. Diaphanous, sheer, overlay fabrics were abundant. All manner of maids and butlers possessed keen knowledge of the care of the fabrics — which involved brushing and cleaning combinations. Heavier cotton fabrics were used for the servant and worker clothing. Meanwhile, affluent people wore soft white cottons during warmer seasons. Jo and Lana also have observed that a piece of clothing was often altered or changed several times to reflect changing styles. Utilitarian components such as the balayeuse, a removable ruffle on the underside of a trained skirt or petticoat to protect the fabric, could be replaced if the hem was soiled from brushing the floor. Some dresses were intended to flatter, with ingenuous, embedded corset-boning and corsets that accentuated figures. Garments also were handmade or made-toorder for the client. Heather Brown, curator of education at the Plant Museum, described the Victorian Christmas Stroll and the unique theme for each room of the museum. In one collection, Jo and Lana depicted the illusion of Thomas Edison with his wife and two children as holiday carolers.

t may not seem apparent, at first, but understanding vintage clothing styles can offer insights into an earlier time. JoAnn (Jo) Hopper and Lana McLaurin share a passion for vintage clothing, and have devoted decades to collecting, studying, displaying and teaching about historical clothing. The pair of dear friends met in 1979, and the Pasco County duo have dressed the mannequins and crafted the vintage clothing displays that contribute to the ongoing displays at the Henry B. Plant Museum, including the museum’s annual Victorian Christmas Stroll, now in its 36th year. The two women share a belief that when one dons Victorian attire, there is a sense of living history that evokes appreciation of the time, and the personality of the owner and surroundings—which causes one to straighten her posture, square-up shoulders, and stroll out gracefully with a countenance of demure confidence. They agree with William Shakespeare’s assessment that “apparel oft proclaims the man” and Mark Twain’s observation that “clothes make the man.” Jo and Lana spent a recent afternoon positioning their elegant vintage garments and accessories in a museum display. As they worked, it became evident that apparel indeed reveals clues about the people who wore them, and the culture of their time. From fabric, cut and adornment, the two women garner information about the original owner’s status, work, age, and even beliefs, etiquette and self-assurance. They concentrate on antique clothing from the late Victorian and Edwardian periods through World War I. Lana explained that although British Queen Victoria lived from 1837 to 1901, she and Jo are most interested in the later years of the queen’s life. The Edwardian period covers the reign of King Edward VII, from 1901 to 1910. In Victorian times, rules governed dress and the slightest nuances spoke volumes about social standing. For women, reception gowns, not intended for street wear, but grand enough for greeting guest in one’s own home, differed slightly from the visiting dress which would be worn, never without hat and gloves, when making calls on ladies “at home” during socially prescribed hours. In addition, wardrobes included dinner dresses, evening gowns, operetta toilettes and, the grandest of all, ball gowns. Jo’s foray into the field of antique clothing, which she now describes as a fun obsession, began with an interest in the Civil War and antebellum times.

Owner Laura Vinogradov plans to open several Park and Bark services in Florida. For an hourly fee, shoppers at Tampa Premium Outlets can get short-term dog sitting at the mall.
Park and Bark is for those who love shopping, and dogs By Kathy Steele ksteele@lakerlutznews.com
Tampa Premium Outlets has an extra attraction for shoppers who hate to leave their four-legged companions at home. A new business, Park and Bark, gives shoppers a chance to leave their dogs with a pet sitter at the mall. Park and Bark, which opened in midNovember, operates in a climate-controlled trailer in a parking area across from the McDonald’s restaurant. Owner Laura Vinogradov is an animal lover providing what she believes is the first, and only, pet-sitting service of its kind in Florida. “It’s an idea I’ve had for many years,” Vinogradov said.“So many services are coming to where people are. Why not dog sitting?” Park and Bark is a very specific service. “It’s not boarding. It’s not overnight. It’s
not doggy day care,”Vinogradov said. The service charges an hourly rate. Customers can drop off their dogs for up to two hours at a time. If more shopping time is needed, owners must return to walk their dogs before heading off again to the mall. One recent morning, Remy and Percy settled into their enclosed pods while their owner was shopping. Remy, a Doberman Pinscher puppy, playfully batted around a square container with hidden doggy treats. His Dachshund sibling, Percy, rested on a soft mat in his own pod. Vinogradov has two large pods and four smaller ones, but there is room for expansion. While this is the owner’s first Park and Bark, she anticipates taking her concept statewide. Negotiations are ongoing for two addiContinued on next page

tional locations at undisclosed sites. They could open in 2018. “We all know the retail market is changing,”Vinogradov said.“Malls are looking for the next draw to set themselves apart for the next shopping experience. We see Park and Bark as added value for them,” she said. Vinogradov is a world traveler with a background in journalism and nonprofits. She also has years of experience in the pet care industry. She previously operated The Barking Lot boarding kennel in Lutz for about six years. She has bred and trained show dogs. And, she also worked with the Israeli Schutzhund Club, training dogs for search and rescue work. She spent about 18 months researching and checking locations for Park and Bark, including Orlando. “I really wanted to come back to Lutz,” Vinogradov said. The outlet mall, and her former neighborhood, fell into place as the best location. The mall sits at the crossroads of State Road 56 and Interstate 75, where residential

and commercial growth are spreading. Vinogradov figures local residents can take advantage of the dog-sitting service, but she thinks vacationers will, as well. Travelers with their dogs on board, can hop off I-75 for a breather, or to indulge in a shopping spree or have a meal in a sit-down restaurant. Most of the time, families would have to take turns caring for their dogs while others shopped or dined. Or, families would have to go to the drive-through window for fast food. With Park and Bark, people and pets can enjoy their visit,Vinogradov said. “Pets become like children,” she said. “They (pet owners) want to travel with their dogs and keep them close.” For information, call Vinogradov at (813) 600-7985, or email Laura@ParkTheDog.com.

Pasco County Commission selects new chairman By Kathy Steele ksteele@lakerlutznews.com
Mike Wells Jr., took the helm as chairman of the Pasco County Commission in a vote taken Nov. 28 in New Port Richey. The District 4 county commissioner replaces Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moore who served as chairman during the past year.
FORUM, from page 1A The annual legislative delegation meeting is a ritual that gives lawmakers a chance to find out what is on the minds of their constituents for the coming legislative year. This year’s session was on Nov. 27 at the Wesley Chapel Center for the Arts, at Wesley Chapel High School. More than 60 people signed up, with each allotted three minutes to address the legislators, who were seated at a table on the arts center’s stage. Rep. Danny Burgess, the delegation’s chairman; Rep. Amber Mariano; and Sen. Wilton Simpson attended the entire meeting. Sen. Tom Lee and Rep. Richard Corcoran attended portions of the meeting. Sen. Jack Latvala was absent. Afterward Burgess described the meeting as a fact-gathering session to help legislators deliberate on issues during the 2018 legislative session in Tallahassee. “It’s important — with a state this big and statute books so voluminous —it’s impossible to know every issue,” Burgess said. He also said people’s presence and participation are important. “It’s a truly collaborative thing,” he said, noting, lawmakers will have more information “because people from our areas decided to take the time to come here.” Along those lines, Debra Golinski asked lawmakers to provide funding for screening programs at Sertoma Speech & Hearing Foundation Inc. She said about $750,000 is needed for a program to help hearing-impaired children, ages 3 to 6 years,“begin to listen and talk.” Golinksi also asked legislators to support a bill to provide hearing aids for children. Timothy Beard, president of PascoHernando State College, said the college is expanding rapidly and needs about $3.7 million in additional funding for operations.
The position typically rotates year-to-year among the commissioners. Duties include leading county commission meetings and being the public face of the board as a whole. Pasco County Commissioner Ron Oakley, who is in his first term on the board, got the nod from fellow commissioners to be vice chairman. Wells was elected to the board in 2014
after defeating incumbent Pasco County Commissioner Henry Wilson. Wells, who is Republican, has filed for reelection in November 2018. Democrat Brandi Geoit also has filed to run in that race. Wells’ father is Mike Wells Sr., who served on the county board in the 1980s and later as the county’s property appraiser. Wells worked for Enterprise Rent-A-Car
for many years before becoming a Realtor. Oakley won the District 1 election in 2016 and replaced former Commissioner Ted Schrader who decided not to seek reelection and, instead, made an unsuccessful run for county property appraiser. Previously, Oakley served on the Southwest Florida Water Management District’s board as treasurer, vice chairman and chairman.
He said school enrollment has increased from about 1,800 three years ago to about 4,000 students now. “The growth there has really been phenomenal. We really, really need the dollars,” Beard said. Other agencies and nonprofits seeking state funds included the Gulf Coast Jewish Family & Community Services, the Area Agency on Aging of Pasco-Pinellas Inc., the Reach program with Pasco’s PACE Center for Girls, and the Pasco County Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention, or ASAP. Hot button political issues also came up. James Brown, of the nonprofit Farmworkers Self Help, sought support for “DACA kids”, the children who are part of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. The federal program could be ended soon, leaving these children subject to deportation. They and their families harvested crops for years, Brown said. “They did nothing more than work hard. We need to give these longtime families a place in the county. We’re not asking for budgetary concerns. We’re just asking for your compassion,” Brown said. Several people also spoke on fracking, asking legislators to ban the practice in Florida. Fracking is a process for pumping chemically treated high pressure water into a drilled pipeline to break through rock formations to tap into oil or natural gas reserves. “Our message is simple,” said Brooke Errett, of Food & Water Watch. “Fracking doesn’t make sense.” Legislators also got updates on initiatives under review at the federal level by U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis. His aide, Summer Robertson, told them that Bilirakis is seeking a balanced approach toward addressing the opioid crisis. He wants an approach that helps people with opioid addiction but still gives people “with legitimate pain” access to medications, Robertson said.
GRIEF, from page 1A
know if they can handle attending a holiday gathering, Cavagnetto said. “I tell my clients:‘Always have an escape plan.’ “If you typically carpooled to a holiday party, maybe this year you want to drive by yourself. “You always want to able to exit, when you’re ready to exit,” she said. She also tells them to be aware of their emotional levels. “It’s OK if you’re only there for 15 minutes, and you get your hellos and your happy holidays in, and make a break for it,” she said. It’s also important for those who are grieving to identify where they can turn for support, whether it’s a counselor, or family member or friend. For those wanting to show support to someone who is suffering a loss, it’s a good idea to check with them to be sure they’re OK. “See if they have any holiday plans. If they say they don’t want to do anything this year, just let them know what you’re doing, and let them know that they’re invited. They might change their mind, day of. Or, they might get to that point where they’re really lonely, and they might need somebody to reach out, so it’s important to know who’s there,” Cavagnetto said. “People can feel really alone. If it has been a few months, they feel that other people have settled back into their routine and don’t even talk about their loved one anymore, their spouse or their parent, or their child, whoever it was,” she said. Sometimes, they’ll want to talk about their loved one, other times they won’t, she said. The important thing is to be willing to listen, to talk and to share memories, if they’d like to. When it comes to grieving a loved one, Cavagnetto said,“there is no cookie-cutter answer.”
one has different expectations and different needs,” the counselor said. “Maybe if there’s a young child in the home, they expect a tree to go up. But, maybe that’s not something we’re going to do. So, if they can come up to some type of a compromise where they have a small tree in their room, where somehow everyone’s needs are fulfilled,” she said. Consider creating new traditions, Cavagnetto said. “Sometime we can’t do the same old thing, there’s too much emotion attached to it. So, if your family always cooked at home, and your spouse was a big part of cooking that meal, or your parent was a big part of cooking that meal, it’s OK to think about going out this year,” she said. Another strategy involves finding a way to memorialize your loved one. “Maybe there was a special decoration that mom always had to have out on the tree, or displayed somewhere special,” she said. Or, maybe you want to make a new ornament, or set a place at the table for your loved one, or find another way to honor the loved one’s memory, she said. Some people light a candle in the loved one’s favorite scent. “You can even do that year-round, when you’re having a rough day, thinking of them,” she said. It’s also important to realize that emotional triggers often occur unexpectedly, the counselor added. For instance, lately she’s been hearing a lot about people being upset about memories popping up on Facebook. “Those pictures are coming back up for people, and they might not expect them to be there,” she said. People who are grieving often don’t

Saddlebrook Prep student-athletes strive for success By Kevin Weiss

osette Anderson moved clear across the country from Seattle when she was in seventh grade to attend Saddlebrook Preparatory School — with the hope of developing her golf game. Tennis player Noah Schachter also ventured to the school from the Pacific Northwest. Meanwhile other athletes, including Aline Krauter and Sifan He, moved even greater distances to attend the renowned prep school. They crossed international waters, with Krauter coming from Germany, and He making the trek from China. Students arriving on the Wesley Chapel campus have specific goals in mind. They are aiming to earn a Division I college athletic scholarship and to compete in professional sports. Anderson, Schachter, Krauter and He have achieved part one. Each of them signed National Letters of Intent during a signing day ceremony on Nov. 9. Schachter signed with Texas A&M University; Anderson signed with Elon University in North Carolina. Krauter and He, meanwhile, intend to spend the next four years golfing in California, for Stanford and Pepperdine universities, respectively. The fall signing period wrapped up last month, whereby several student-athletes from The Laker/Lutz News coverage area went from prospective recruits to college signees. The designated period allowed athletes who have made verbal commitments to a university to officially accept a scholarship by signing with their chosen school. It holds particular meaning for sports academies, including Saddlebrook, where many students have professional sports aspirations, and work tirelessly everyday to reach that goal. Saddlebrook Prep has 85 students, and caters to grades 3 through 12; all but three students actively compete in tennis or golf. Tuition for the prep school and golf academy costs nearly $49,475 annually for non-boarding students and $64, 875 for boarders. Its tennis academy — combined with prep schooling — is slightly less expensive, at $42,060 a year for non-boarders and $60,665 for boarders. School leaders say Saddlebrook’s “worldclass training facilities and strong academic focus” set it apart from other tennis or golf boarding schools. Student-golfers are coached on the resort’s two Arnold Palmer-designed courses, while tennis players train daily with their coaches on 45 tennis courts. Both sports programs allow students to participate in local, regional and national tournaments, traveling as part of the Saddlebrook Prep team, or individually, depending on the tournament and player. More than 50 percent of its student-athletes wind up signing a college scholarship or some type of grant-in-aid agreement, headmaster Chris Wester said.
MAKING INTERNATIONAL CONNECTIONS Saddlebrook Prep’s record of success annually attracts dozens of boarding students from more than 20 countries, including such places as Sweden, Germany, France, Poland, Czech Republic, Russia, Malaysia, South Korea, China, Australia and Brazil,

Four student-athletes from Saddlebrook Preparatory School penned their National Letters of Intent at a signing ceremony last month. among others. About half of Saddlebrook’s enrollment consists of international students. Many discover Saddlebrook Prep by competing in international tournaments and by word of mouth. That was the case for China’s Sifan He, who enrolled in September. The Chinese student said a friend recommended the school to her, and she believes the boarding school experience has proven worthwhile — socially, academically and athletically. Her college of choice—Pepperdine— consistently fields one of the nation’s top 10 Division I women’s golf programs, and is widely regarded as one of the nation’s premier private institutions. She gave Saddlebrook high marks. “The program here is very good. All the people here are very friendly, and they’re willing to help you. I like all the staff here — they’re really, really nice. And, the facilities here are very good.” Aline Krauter arrived at Saddlebrook during her sophomore year, from Germany. Krauter, an elite golfer in her own right, won the 2016 German International Amateur Championship. More recently, she finished seventh this year at the Portuguese International Ladies Amateur and 22nd at the Annika Invitational in Sweden. She also placed in the final 64 at the Ladies British Open Amateur Championship, and competed in the European Girls Team Championship in Finland. Krauter said the move from Germany to Wesley Chapel wasn’t a huge transition, having attended an international school in her native country. “I was used to having an international environment, so it wasn’t too much of a difference,” she said. Something she couldn’t do in Germany, however, was golf everyday. As soon as she finishes school at 12:05 p.m., she can head straight out to the golf course, she said. Saddlebrook’s daily schedule is modeled after the NCAA format for athlete participation; twenty hours is the maximum number of organized practice hours at the NCAA level. High school students have classes from 7:30 a.m. to 12:05 p.m. They then practice from 1 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. — which includes fitness time.

Saddlebrook Preparatory School has 85 students, catering to grades 3 through 12. More than 50 percent of its student-athletes wind up signing a college scholarship or some type of grant-in-aid agreement. The school attracts students from more than 20 nations, primarily from Asia and Europe.
The boarding program, meanwhile, requires additional responsibilities of its students, such as washing clothes, cleaning dishes and making beds — helping to create a collegial atmosphere on campus. “Our kids master time management, whereas kids that maybe went to a public school and went to golf every other day...they may not have the same time management skills that our kids would have, because they’ve been living it for a period of time,” Wester said. Some sports academies are criticized for not emphasizing academics enough. Wester argues that’s not the case for Saddlebrook Prep, which is fully accredited through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS-CASI), and the Florida Council of Independent Schools (FCIS). Seventy percent of the school’s faculty members hold master’s degrees. Said Wester, “If you look at where our student-athletes matriculate to, and the pathways that we’ve created with universities, our academics are deemed to be rigorous enough for Stanford,Texas A&M,Virginia, Florida from last year,Vanderbilt, Duke. They all know — because we have sent students there previously — what they’re going to get.” In addition to the four athletes that signed last month, Wester anticipates more than 11 more seniors — out of its 22-member senior class — to sign some sort of scholarship in the spring signing period in March.
Besides strong academics, advanced sports instruction helps make the reality of a college scholarship possible. All of Saddlebrook’s tennis and golf instructors played at the collegiate level; a majority played their sport professionally, too. Mark Hirschey is the director of instruction for Saddlebrook Golf Academy. He said coaches and athletic trainers assist students on technique, decision-making and in-game strategy. Hefty focus is also given to strength and flexibility training, and mental fitness—encompassing visualization, proper breathing during to pre- and post-shot routines, and positive self-talk. Being around other motivated, likeminded athletes, too, provides an invaluable experience. “It creates a competition that helps them improve and, at the same time, learn to handle the pressure. They not only learn from the coaches, but also by the example the better players set,” Hirschey wrote in an e-mail to The Laker/Lutz News. Saddlebrook also accommodates a tournament travel schedule during the school year where athletes can compete throughout Florida and the U.S., and even the Bahamas and Cayman Islands.Athletes can compete, as long as they make up their classwork when they return. “We have designated time for them to come back and get one-on-one instruction with their teachers, so that they stay academically sound,”Wester explained. Schachter, who is rated as the No. 23 player in the 2018 class by tennisrecruiting.net, considers that option “the best part” about Saddlebrook. “Academically, it’s helped me a lot,” he said, “because I can travel to tournaments where I would normally not be able to at a regular school, and they’re really flexible here, and I’m allowed to make up my work easily. It’s made for athletes and that’s been like a huge help, because I don’t feel stressed whenever I want to travel to tournaments.” Schachter earned a career-best ITF (International Tennis Federation) ranking of No. 185 in February, after earning ITF points from wins at several sanctioned tournaments. “The biggest thing that’s helped me develop as a player is just having a good schedule and being able to have private instruction with the coaches, and also being able to hit with like really good players,” Schachter said. The daily grind can be demanding. In the long run, Anderson said, that will serve her well. “I feel like the structure and everything is definitely a component where your life is set up in a way where you’re taught to practice no matter how you feel, so it’s good and bad, but I mean in the end, after high school, after it’s all done and you’ve graduated, all those days that you put into practice, you’ve grown as a person and feel like a stronger athlete,” she said. Besides golf, Anderson serves as Saddlebrook Prep’s council president for the Class of 2018. She appreciates the small, tight-knit environment the program creates. “Everyone gets really close, so you have a sense that you’re a family in the community,” Anderson said. “And, that’s helped me a lot as a person because I’ve been able to build really, really close relationships with people from all over the world, and I can go to a lot of different places and know people from there, and have a connection.”

crowd estimated at about 400 enjoyed pleasant weather for Traditions on the Green, a concert featuring local music and dance groups. The free family event was presented by the Heritage Park Foundation and the Wesley Chapel Noon Rotary Club Land O’ Lakes Satellite. It was the first time the annual Traditions on the Green was held on the newly built Heritage Stage, a project that was years in the making. The Lake Myrtle chorus, the Land O’ Lakes High School and the Pine View Middle School bands performed, and Pine View Middle’s dance team entertained the crowd, too. Before the concert began, those attending could play games, kids could jump in a bouncy house and tickets were sold for a raffle.

The sun sets behind Heritage Stage just as the Lake Myrtle Elementary School’s Terrapin Sound Machine took the stage. Six-year-old Everett Stephans throws his ball with all his might to knock down some milk jugs while his mother, Jessica, and little sister 4year-old Louise look on. This was one of the several games that concertgoers could enjoy.
