Superintendent pushes new standards By B.C. Manion bcmanion@akerlutznews.com
As the Pasco County school district shifts to a more rigorous set of educational standards, Superintendent Kurt Browning has been making the rounds to explain the changes to parents. During his most recent stop at Wiregrass Ranch High School — the final of 13 community meetings — Browning told parents that the district must change the way teachers teach and students learn. He also called for greater involvement by parents to help prepare students for entering school and to reinforce learning at home. The district’s current performance must improve, Browning said, especially since the district is ranked 34th out of the state’s 67 districts. “I’m not the least bit happy with 34,” Browning said. Society has changed and the district must change, too, to meet its goal of produc-

ing students who are ready for college, careers and life, Browning said. “We’ve got to make a connection between what’s happening in the real world and in the classroom,” Browning said. Along those lines, the district is shifting to Common Core State Standards and raising the bar on expectations. The standards define what students should know as they proceed through school in order to graduate from high school fully prepared to enter college and the work force. “We’re embracing a new way of teaching and learning,” said Rayann Mitchell, a senior supervisor in the division of curriculum, assessment and instruction. The new standards are causing teachers to think differently about the way they teach, Browning said. Instead of standing at the front of the classroom lecturing, teachers are now pushing for more collaboration between students See STANDARDS, page 8
EXPERIENCE vs. NEW BLOOD By Michael Hinman

Three elections, six candidates, and three incumbents — all with more than a half-century of government experience. Voters head to the polls April 8 in Dade City, St. Leo and Zephyrhills, where they will decide, among other things, whether
they want to keep longevity in their city government, or find a fresh perspective. Each of these municipalities faced controversy in recent months. Dade City abruptly turned one high-level government job into two, pushing out a longtime employee. St. Leo could see its government shaken up later this year if parts of Lake Jovita
successfully de-annex itself, possibly eliminating two commission seats. And, Zephyrhills is facing a tough decision on what to do with its top executive, where one race could easily seal the fate of City Manager Jim Drumm. Three communities have their future in the balance, and every single vote has the potential to be the ultimate decider.

The moment people drive into Zephyrhills, they know there’s an election brewing between Alan Knight and incumbent Jodi Wilkeson. Who will win is decided April 8.
Zephyrhills tests whether everybody knows your name Finding success in politics most definitely is a game of “who you know,” or at the very least when a voter is looking at a long list of names,“who has heard of you.” If familiarity is key to winning a seat on the Zephyrhills city council, former Pasco County educator Alan Knight may have this one in the bag. “Being in education, I would honestly think I have touched the lives of at least 75 percent of the people of this town — either as students, athletes, church members, etc.,” Knight said. “I know the people of Zephyrhills, and I know their feelings.” However, while Knight may have See ZEPHYRHILLS, page 8
When Scott Black first took his seat on the Dade City Commission, Iraq had not yet invaded Kuwait to ignite the first Gulf War, George Bush (the first one) was still president, and spending more than a dollar for a gallon of gas probably meant it was premium. A lot has changed in 24 years, and Angelica Herrera feels Black has not kept up. And that’s why she’s facing off against him next week. “Mr. Black has had his chance,” she said. “But after (more than) 20 years, he has lost touch with the voters.” That was most evident, Herrera said, when Black approved physically expanding a sewage plant into a neighboring athletic field in the Mickens-Harper neighborhood. See DADE CITY, page 8

St. Leo is such a small town that a community that’s complained about taxes, nearby Saint Leo University and other issues, is literally right on the town hall’s doorstep.
St. Leo election is all about one thing: Lake Jovita community A bill sits in a committee in Tallahassee that would remove part of the Lake Jovita community from St. Leo. Yet, that hasn’t stopped Raphael Davis from challenging longtime commissioner Donna DeWitt for her seat in the St. Leo government. While Davis talks almost exclusively about the plight of Lake Jovita residents in the town, he has nothing to say about the de-annexation itself, saying he doesn’t “comment on pending legislation or speculation.” “Since the beginning of the Lake Jovita community, a small portion has allegiance to the Town of St. Leo,” Davis said.“These Lake Jovita residents have, up to this point, quietSee ST. When Trish Trout runs with thousands of racers at the 118th Boston Marathon in April, she’ll cross an item off her bucket list. “Boston is the crown jewel of running, and coming from a non-elite running status, it always seemed like it was a dream too far out of reach,” the 39-year-old mother of two said. The Wesley Chapel woman couldn’t picture qualifying and she knew the only other way would be to run for a charity, something she couldn’t quite foresee happening. City manager merry-go-round returning Steve Spina to job? mhinman@lakerlutznews.com
If Jim Drumm believes some of the rumors he’s heard, then former Zephyrhills city manager Steve Spina might become the Jay Leno of local government. The late-night comedian stepped aside from “The Tonight Show” in 2009, but returned to the job a short time later after replacement host Conan O’Brien fell out of favor. The same might be happening in Zephyrhills, Drumm told the city council last week. Hearing reports that Spina might be looking to return to city management after some time teaching, Drumm said Jim Drumm some council members might be hoping they can get Spina to take his old job back. In fact, it’s one of the few things Drumm says makes sense on why the council would suddenly be talking about letting him go as city manager after three years. “I have great respect for Dr. Spina,” Drumm said in a prepared letter to the council March 24.“I have not had his long tenure to compete with his knowledge and his many contacts. If it is not the intent of the city council to hire Dr. Spina, then I remain perplexed by the issues that warrant me to not continue working together to improve Zephyrhills.” Spina, who retired as city manager in 2011, told The Laker after last week’s meeting that he wasn’t commenting on such rumors, except to say that they are not accurate. Three city council members have expressed a desire to part ways with Drumm, and feel now is the best time since his contract runs out in May.To renew that contract would require a supermajority on the council — four votes — they say, and those votes just aren’t there. Drumm disagrees with that interpretation of the city’s charter. His contract might have a set beginning and end date, but the charter is clear that it takes four votes to appoint a city manager, and four votes to remove him. And whether Drumm has a contract or not, without those four votes, the council can’t force him out. “My take is that I would remain a city manager without a contract,” Drumm said, adding that there were times in Spina’s 15year tenure where he worked without a

contract, too, protected by the four-votes clause of the city charter. Both City Attorney Joe Poblick and outside labor attorney Brian Koji agreed that Drumm has a finite contract with the city. If four council members don’t vote to renew it, then Drumm is out of a job. Councilman Kenneth Compton, however, doesn’t have a lot of confidence in the track record of the city attorney and lawyers he may consult when it comes to labor issues. Compton, who has pushed for more discussion on Drumm’s employment situation, said the city took heavy financial losses from two recent labor disputes. He fears that forcing Drumm out could result in another legal dispute, one that could be yet another loss for Zephyrhills in front of a judge. “The contract has a term limit, but the charter doesn’t,” Compton said, adding that the charter would supersede any contract the council writes, since the charter is essentially Zephyrhills’ constitution.“I don’t like ending this, but if we’re going to do it, I want to make sure we are as accurate as possible.” The battle lines over Drumm have been drawn, it seems, as far as the council is concerned. Lance Smith and Ken Burgess originally recommended cutting Drumm loose, and last week, had Charles Proctor join their side. That leaves just Compton and Jodi Wilkeson in support of Drumm, or at the very least, gathering more information on making sure the city is protected legally. Wilkeson suggested a third legal opinion be sought, something Mayor Danny Burgess was against. “How much weight are we going to give this third opinion?” Burgess asked.“We had two attorneys that we paid for opinions who are very qualified and very good at what they do. And here we’re just going with a firm (for a third opinion) based on name recognition.” Compton and Wilkeson picked out the Tampa firm Fowler White as one they recognized from a list of potential firms Poblick shared at the council meeting, and chose that firm for the third opinion. Seeking that additional legal counsel does buy Drumm more time as it delayed a decision to the April 14 council meeting. However, that pushes the meeting until after the upcoming municipal election where Wilkeson is defending her seat against former high school football coach Alan Knight. If Knight wins the election and decides against retaining Drumm, he would be the fourth vote and would likely make any legal questions moot.

PUBLISHER’S COLUMN
The power of grandfatherly love By Diane Kortus Publisher
My father was in Florida last week to attend my daughter’s senior art show at Stetson University in Deland. Rachel graduates in May and she decided her art show was more important to have her grandfather attend than her graduation ceremony. So dad and my stepmother, Bettye, flew in from this year’s never-ending white wilds of Minnesota to a sunny and green Florida. Along with more than a dozen other family members and close friends, we rejoiced in Rachel’s artistic and academic achievements — all connected to Rachel by a lifetime of love as her mother, grandparent, aunt, uncle, cousin or friend. Of all the family in town for my daughter’s show, my father’s attendance was especially welcomed because he has been at my side for the most important moments in Rachel’s life. When she was just weeks old, dad came to Florida to help me with Rachel and to keep her big brother, Andy, entertained so I could focus on caring for my new baby. He was back when Rachel was baptized six months later, and again for her first birthday. When my family moved to Chicago two years later, he flew in to help me pack and then drove the family’s SUV with me in the front and Rachel and Andy in the back, to our new home in Geneva, Ill. Four years later when my family returned to Florida, dad was there again, this time driving one of two moving vans packed with my family’s possessions, and Rachel, once again, in the back seat. Rachel was in first grade when we resettled in Tampa, and dad and Bettye began their annual spring pilgrimage to Florida to spend a few weeks with my children and me. When Rachel turned 10, she began a reverse pilgrimage to Minnesota every summer to stay with her grandparents and visit her aunts, uncles and cousins. As Rachel’s interest in art blossomed, her grandfather proudly displayed her paintings and drawing in his home. He is so proud of her drawing of Pope John Paul II that it has become family lore that Rachel drew the pope just for him. No one visits dad’s home without hearing about his amazingly talented granddaughter. At every important family occasion, dad and Bettye have been there for Rachel.
When she graduated from high school in 2010, they were here to see her receive her IB diploma from Carrollwood Day School. Dad was back again in the fall to visit Rachel in Deland as she began her college career. As Rachel proudly showed off the Stetson campus, I remember him telling me that in a blink of time he would be back for her graduation. I looked at him like he was crazy — Rachel had just left home and four years seemed like forever to me. Of course, dad was right. It does seem like a blink of time since Rachel and I were at Bed Bath & Beyond filling a shopping cart with “must have” items for her dorm room. My father, who has more than 20 grandchildren, has the gift to make each one believe they are his favorite. I have always marveled at this, especially with my children who live so far away. But distance does not matter when it comes to love. My kids feel just as close to their grandparents living 1,500 miles away, as do their cousins who live five miles away. In fact, at the gathering to celebrate Rachel’s art show, my father told her that it is difficult for him to have a favorite grandchild, but for that day, it was easy. It was her special day, and she was his favorite. Dad’s visit this year to coincide with Rachel’s art show is especially poignant, because at age 85, it is more difficult for him to travel and get around. I can’t help but wonder if this will be one of his last trips to Florida. It is, after all, much easier for my children and me to visit him in Minnesota than for him to travel to Florida. I am so happy that dad was able to keep the promise he made four years ago to be here when Rachel graduated from college. We are blessed to have a father and grandfather in such good health and so full of life. My joy at dad’s visit also makes me reflect that he may not be here when Rachel reaches the next milestones of her life — when she marries, has her first child and gets the job of her dreams. I am extraordinarily grateful that my dad has been such a wonderful grandfather and has shared in so many of my family’s most meaningful moments. The examples he set about the value of family have taught my children about the strength of commitment, the power of love and the joy that comes from sharing important times with people we cherish.

STANDARDS, from page 1 and self-directed learning, Mitchell said. When parents visit a classroom, they may see different ways of teaching and learning. Instead of being seated in neat rows, students may have their desks pushed together so they can collaborate on projects, divvy research assignments and share what they’ve learned. Teachers are being challenged in new ways, too. They’re using technology to help deliver lessons, and they’re using a new set of educational standards. The standards aim at helping students develop a deeper understanding of concepts and an ability to use their knowledge to tackle new academic challenges, Mitchell said. Under Common Core, students will spend more time reading for information and less on literature as they advance through their school years. Elementary students will spend about half of their time on literary texts and the other half reading for information. Secondary students will spend about 30 percent of their time reading literature and the rest reading information. Students will read a wide range of information and also will dig deep into content, Mitchell said. “We want them to be able to pick up
ZEPHYRHILLS, from page 1 worked as an administrator and even a head football coach for Zephyrhills High School in the mid-1970s, he hasn’t been working on the city council during the past six years like Jodi Wilkeson. As a councilwoman and a business owner — as well as someone who likes to stay active — there is rarely a Zephyrhills event that she’s not a part of. “On the campaign trail, no one ever says to me, ‘Where have you been?’” Wilkeson said. “They know I’m always just a phone call away. When they have a problem, I know who to call and how to get it solved.” Knight fears spending too much time on the council can create a stale look at the problems. To him, a fresh face brings fresh ideas and proposals, and gets away from “we have always done it that way.” Wilkeson, however, says she’s never stuck to the status quo. “’Fresh perspective’ shouldn’t be synonymous with ‘little relevant experience’ when competing for a position as an elected municipal official,” Wilkeson said. “There’s a steep learning curve when taking office. I prefer to see folks run for office only after they’ve invested a year or more in service as a volunteer city board member.” And Knight, she says, has done just that,
DADE CITY, from page 1 “This was most insensitive and not necessary, since the city had other options,” she said. However, if Herrera wants any chance to beat Black, she not only faces a commissioner that has strong name recognition in Dade City, but she may need to overcome some of her eyebrow-raising actions, including walking out of a candidate debate last week. This, Black said, has hurt Herrera’s position, because she has not “presented anything of consideration relating to either experience or fresh perspective.” “She has not attended any city commission meetings or public events to make any effort to educate herself on the current issues,” Black said of Herrera. Quoting the late Gov. Lawton Chiles, Black said elected officials can either “grow” or “swell” in their positions, and he chooses to grow. “It is very important to me that I enjoy and embrace the many challenges that come with the position, and continue to grow with it,” Black said.“As well, someone purporting to be only a fresh infusion of energy is usually not the best option, while a knowledgeable proven force is always better, and should be preferred.” Dade City’s commission earned some un-

anything they want to read and to be able to figure it out,” she said. In mathematics, the shift is toward developing a deeper understanding so that students can use efficient and effective ways to solve problems. Besides communicating their math knowledge through writing, they’ll also be expected to explain it, orally. Teachers need to help students become self-directed learners, Mitchell said. School districts cannot use a one-size-fits-all approach to instruction. “Every child learns differently,” Browning said.“There are going to be some kids that just aren’t going to get it.” The district must address those needs. “We’re about pushing kids, but we’re not about pushing kids along,” he said. Students may complain to their parents that school is hard, Browning said. But school is supposed to be challenging. It isn’t supposed to be easy. Learning requires work. There are many ways that parents can help. Parent involvement begins before children enter school, he added, noting some youngsters arrive at school without knowing such basic things as the alphabet, colors, numbers or seasons. Having nonfiction materials at home for children to read, engaging children in family projects, and helping with homework, are among the ways parents can support their

getting a “good start” with his work on the Parks & Recreation Board dealing with what to do with the closed Hercules Park on County Road 54. One thing both seem to agree on, however, is that neither wants to rush to judgment on embattled city manager Jim Drumm. Wilkeson has publicly sought to hold off any decisions while more information is gathwanted publicity late last year when Commissioner Jim Shive surprised his colleagues in the middle of a workshop last October, pushing to separate the position of city clerk and city finance — which was then held by longtime city employee Jim Class. Black spoke out against the move, saying a workshop was not the right forum to bring up such an issue unannounced. But his protests fell on deaf ears, and the move later prompted Class to resign. “The process of dividing the position of city clerk and finance director was flawed and misguided from the start,” Black said.“It was deceptively billed as ‘progress’ when there was no present need to make the personnel change in a smoothly running department — especially in the first month of the new tightly constrained budget yet.” Herrera, however, remembers all of it differently, and says Black has misrepresented what happened. “The fact is that numerous city commission meetings document that this matter was discussed publicly,” she said.“It did not just come up at the workshop for the first time as my opponent would like us to believe. It (really) has been overblown.” Black said his primary regret was not speaking out more loudly, and drawing residents into the conversation. “I wish that the community could have

Sometimes, children are frustrated by homework because they say they haven’t learned a concept yet in school, one parent noted on a comment card. The district’s policy is that homework is intended to reinforce what’s been learned in school. It’s a way to practice new learning, Mitchell said. If materials are being sent home and the child doesn’t understand, parents should reach out to teachers. Browning encourages parents to talk with teachers, and if they can’t resolve their issue there, to talk with principals. He invites them to take their issues up the chain of command until they reach him if problems cannot be resolved. The community forums have been informative, Browning said. For one thing, the district has learned it needs to communicate
ered, and Knight feels the same way. “I have often been asked about the Drumm issue, and my response is that until elected, I can make no judgment,” he said.“Once there, I will totally scrutinize the situation, seek advice from the citizens, (and) talk to Mr. Drumm and all involved. In other words, I do not take this lightly, but as a situation that not only has to be addressed, but one that must be addressed with close, well-defined facts.” Knight’s primary platform focuses on communication inside the government and with residents, something he says has fallen to “a new low.”Wilkeson, on the other hand, wants more attention paid to the Zephyrhills Police Department, where low wages can’t compete with neighboring communities. “Our citizens want a strong, well-trained police force, but we continue to lose talent to bigger communities offering better wages and benefits,”Wilkeson said. She may have voted against a tax increase that would’ve funded a new detective position with the police department, but that hasn’t stopped her from voting for pay increases to entry-level patrol officers. Knight said he agrees, and expands that a step further. “I feel that support of all our city workers is a must,” he said,“from the chiefs of fire and police, to the man riding on the garbage truck.”

more with parents. To that end, it will launch a monthly newsletter next school year to keep in touch with parents. The newsletter will be emailed to any parent submitting an email address. The community meeting also addressed some misconceptions about the Common Core standards. Skeptics have claimed that Common Core are standards that are being pushed on local districts by the federal government, but Browning said that isn’t true. The National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers collaborated with teachers, researchers, education experts, and members of the higher education and business communities to design and develop the standards. Local school districts are in charge of the educational materials used to ensure students meet those standards, Browning said. This year, Florida students will continue taking the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, Browning said. Next year, there will be another assessment, though state officials have not yet decided what that will be. The school district’s goal is to equip students for challenges they’ll encounter beyond high school. So, Browning told parents that when international companies locate in Tampa Bay,“I want your kids to be able to compete for those jobs.”

ST. LEO, from page 1 ly gone along about their lives and paid town taxes knowing they were receiving little or no services in return.” Town taxes, Davis said, are out of line with what Pasco County charges to live in an unincorporated area, and have accumulated more than $1.2 million in cash and reserves because of it. “I believe a more business-type approach would benefit all of the residents, reduce the current tax burden on all of our residents, and still maintain the town on a sound financial basis,” Davis said. DeWitt, however, calls Davis’ candidacy just a continuation of the battle the town has had with some Lake Jovita residents since 2006.While she has heard complaints about taxes, she feels the bigger reasons have to do with Saint Leo University itself, a school that predates Lake Jovita by a century or so. “When we make decisions, we try to be a voice for everybody in the town, not just for Lake Jovita,” said DeWitt, a nun with nearby Holy Name Monastery, who was first elected to the commission in 1997.“They get upset when the university puts up a tree or a light. They knew what was there when they built the community.” Losing part of Lake Jovita won’t hurt St. Leo at all, DeWitt said, except create some changes on the commission itself when two members will be forced to resign. “St. Leo will be fine,” she said.“We did it 100 years without them, we’ll continue to do it without them.”
Giving pets a chance, by buying a chance By Michael Hinman mhinman@cnewspubs.com
Lisa Bekiaris can’t remember any time where the welfare of animals wasn’t forefront on her mind. She grew up around animals in Maryland, and was always quite involved with her 4-H program there. When Bekiaris moved to Florida several years ago, she stayed busy with work and other projects. But in 2008, she read a newspaper story that would change her focus. “It was a story about the tough times people were having, and many of them couldn’t even afford pet food,” she said. While a lot of needed attention goes to finding pets a home, there are many times when pets might have a home, but because of financial or health issues of their owners, their bellies go empty. Or just as bad, they are full, but their owners are not. “I have had people tell me, ‘I didn’t eat today because I had to buy dog food,’” Bekiaris said.“We as humans can go out and ask for help, but our animals solely rely on us as a pet parent, and too often we’ll make sacrifices for ourselves to keep them fed.”
Daphne is just one of the many animals whose pet bowls have been filled, thanks to Raffle Rescue’s efforts throughout the county.
Bekiaris decided to take action, and in late 2008, she started Raffle Rescue. The idea was to make sure pets had the food they needed so owners and their animals can stay together, and no one has to make unnecessary sacrifices. She collects food and money from donors all over the county, many who make the trip to her Hudson farm. In 2013 alone, Raffle Rescue provided 27,500 pounds of food to animals. Most of it is distributed from Bekiaris’ farm, but some of it gets delivered thanks to the Meals on Wheels program. Some might question why someone who struggles to support themselves would also try to support an animal, but the issue is not as black and white as it may seem, Bekiaris said. Many got pets when they were not struggling, but later fell on hard times. For a lot of shut-ins, for example, their pet is the only company they have. “Pets aren’t just a piece of property. You can’t just get rid of it when it becomes too expensive,” Bekiaris said.“You took that animal into your life to care for it, and just because things get rough and difficult, you can’t just send them away. It would be just like sending away a family member.” Bekiaris is not the first organization to raise money to feed pets in need, but she may be the first to take her approach. Instead of simply asking for cash donations, Bekiaris provides incentives to give in the form of raffles. Various companies donate or provide significant discounts for prizes, and Bekiaris uses that to give away. Money is used to make up shortfalls in food, or sometimes to provide food that may not be as easily dropped off. Like hay. “We serve mostly dogs and cats, but we will not turn away any animal that someone can prove is their legal pet,” Bekiaris said. “That could be a pig, a goat. All you need is the documentation, and we will help you.” One family who receives help has a horse,

and Raffle Rescue volunteers drop off hay to help keep her fed. Hay, however is expensive — more than $70 a bale — and horses typically eat two of them a month, Bekiaris said. Although Raffle Rescue started as a onewoman operation, it has since grown to need a number of volunteers, especially drivers to deliver food, and people to promote the various raffles the organization is conducting. She also is looking for other places around Pasco County that might be interested in becoming pet food pickup sites, especially on the eastern side of the county. Bekiaris, however, isn’t stopping there. She wants to expand her efforts in the near future to include an animal clinic on her farm, and even more ambitious, mobile units. Right now, some of the closest spay, neuter and vaccination clinics are in the New Port Richey area,Tampa or Brooksville.
What’s holding those plans back, however, is simply staffing. “I have a building already here. I just need to find veterinarians willing to work with me to make it happen,” Bekiaris said. “We want our services to be low-cost, or even free.” Bekiaris also is always looking for pets in need. Her requirements are simple: be a resident of Pasco County, get some type of government assistance like welfare or disability, and something that shows you’re the legal pet owner. “After all that, we’ll make one home visit, and determine whether you need to get food delivered, or if you can come and pick it up,” she said. Raffle Rescue is a 501(c)(3), and donations may be tax-deductible. To learn more about the organization, visit RaffleRescue.org, or call (727) 6977034.

Frank and Dean take Grand Horizons by storm By Helene Rubenstein Grand Horizons
EVENTS & SUPPORT GROUPS
On March 7, 138 people were treated to a show in our community center called “Frank & Dean … and Then Some!” It is a Vegas-style show based in Cleveland, and they tour the Gulf coast of Florida from mid-February through early April. Scott Brotherton — who played Dean Martin — and Damion Fontaine, who played Frank Sinatra, put on one heck of a performance. They included several antics and facial expressions that are so very familiar in the three-hour show. Dean (Scott) was dressed in a tuxedo with a black bow tie and a cummerbund, while Frank (Damion) had on a dark jacket and trousers with a black bow tie and donned a white straw hat.The show started off with Damion singing,“You’re Nobody Till Somebody Loves You,” “Fly With Me” and “I’ve Got You Under My Skin.” A walk through the community center and down the aisles added to the show as Scott and Damion mingled with the audience. They also both did their share of jokes, and were real funny. There was one particular joke that was quite cute. It pertained to an “Aunt Judy” who was 95 years of age and the doctor says that she had the body of a 30-year-old. The punch line had everyone laughing. Some of the other songs that Damion sung were such hits as “Fly Me to the Moon,”“Young at Heart,”“The Way You Look Tonight,” and so much more. When Scott got up to perform, we noticed that Damion was taking pictures of people in the audience. Scott performed such hits as “The Lady is a Tramp,” “As Time Goes By” from Casablanca, and “Something’s Gotta Give,” a

song usually sung by Sammy Davis Jr.They also performed many hits such as “King of the Road,” which was written and originally recorded by Roger Miller, and “Blueberry Hill,” which is best remembered as a rock ‘n’ roll hit by Fats Domino in the 1950s. We were laughing so hard at certain points in this song as Scott reversed the hat the other way on Damion’s head, and that is when Damion changed his voice with the sounds of Fats Domino or Louis Armstrong. Damion also performed “L-O-V-E,” a Nat King Cole song, and did a very good job at it. Scott performed the hit by Marty Robbins

called “A White Sport Coat and a Pink Carnation” with backup by Damion. Damion performed a lovely song called “Summer Wind” and did an excellent job. Both Damion and Scott performed the song “The Best is Yet to Come,” and everyone enjoyed it. This marked the end of the first set, and the people from Grand Horizons were treated to other performances by some residents. Loris Weber played the piano in a tribute to servicemen. She did a fine job, and then Mim Gardner did a recitation for the beginning of “God Bless America.”This was followed by Jim Leitzke leading us in “God Bless America,” and then Andy Gisondi did a lovely performance of “Taps” on his trumpet.

Jim Leitzke, a Grand Horizons’ resident, leads the audience in singing ‘God Bless America.’
The second segment started off with a fine rendition of “Luck Be a Lady Tonight” performed by both Scott and Damion. There was a sing-a-long when Scott performed “Volare,” and of course, arms were swaying and toes were tapping. Several Elvis Presley songs were performed with all the shaking and other movements. During this segment, several couples got up to dance. The song by Nat King Cole,“When I Fall in Love,” was performed beautifully. Several Neil Diamond songs were sung such as “Forever in Blue Jeans” and “Sweet Caroline.” Of course, this resulted in more dancing and arms swaying. It was nice to see some couples take advantage of the dance floor. Both entertainers sang,“How Lucky Can One Person Be,” and Scott sang,“Ain’t That a Kick In the Head,” plus “Beyond the Sea,” a Bobby Darin hit. He then went on to some Johnny Cash hits such as “Ring of Fire” and “Folsom Prison Blues.” We weren’t through yet as they went on to some Alabama hits such as “Play Me Some Mountain Music,” along with some dance steps by Scott. Damion and Scott then did an imitation of the Blues Brothers where they were dancing and singing while sporting the signature sideburns and sunglasses. They ended up going full circle by performing what they started with, a Dean Martin song called “That’s Amore” and a Frank Sinatra tune called “I Did It My Way.” The show ended with both singing “New York, New York.” This marked the end of a very enjoyable evening and it seems that the shows are getting better and better. Thanks goes out to Terry Gardner for one terrific performance. Also at Grand Horizons, we started a craft club. Several residents from Grand Horizons met at our community center March 11.The coordinator of this event was Cheryl Leone, and from what I understand, about 20 people attended.

All aboard to close out the season at Rainbow Village By Sandra Gilbert-Abel Rainbow Village
We started out this month with our Barbie’s Spring Fling fashion show. The fashions were from Dillard’s, and the lunch was delicious, which consisted of three salads and dessert. The models were Charlotte Witham, Mary Pierce, Phyllis Richardson, Jeannie Liggett, Sue Flynn and Patti Hill. They each modeled three outfits. “Barbie” was the guest of honor, and she brought her family. Rosie Meyers portrayed Barbie. Nancy Pollock was Barbie’s mother, Louanna Lang was Barbie’s sister, Laura Gardner her Irish sister, and Sharon Pickford her older sister.
Just one of the quilts at the Rainbow Village quilt show.
They were dressed so funny and had us all in stitches from laughing. Judy Lykins chaired this fashion show, and she had a great committee to help her. Great job, ladies. Preparations for our 29th birthday party for Rainbow Village started when several men helped to put up the tents for our residents to sit under. They also made a stage for our entertainment to perform on.There was a parade with decorated golf carts and bicycles, and also a dog parade. A free hamburger, hot dog lunch was served, followed by cake and ice cream. Rick Arnold was our entertainment for the party. He is a very talented performer. He had us dancing in the street. Everything went great for the party.A big thanks to Dick Elliott and Mick Liggett who co-chaired the party. We are looking forward to our 30th birthday party next year. The SS Rainbow Dance was our last dance of the season, and what better way to end it than with George Raab singing his great music. We were met at the door by our “captain,” Lane Hooper, welcoming us to the SS Rainbow ship. It was a fun time from beginning to end. A big thanks to the committee chairpersons — the Hallidays and the Larkhams — for a great year of dances. John and Kate Henning, a young, talented Christian couple from Michigan who do gospel shows all over the country, entertained us at our ice cream social. They brought their 17-month-old daughter along and they are expecting another daughter in May.They sing and play gospel songs on the keyboard in all styles of music. It was a great gospel show. Rainbow Village partnered with Florida Hospital to have our first health fair that brought in 20 vendors from the community. It was well-attended. Kitty Hooper worked

Energetic? Service-oriented? Then the Pasco County supervisor of elections may be looking for you. Poll workers are needed for both the primary election Aug. 26 and the general election Nov. 4. Positions are paid, but potential candidates will need to be able to stand, bend, stoop, lift approximately 30 pounds, and have normal vision and manual
and physical dexterity. Applicants also need to write and read English, have an email address, and be able to work the entire day from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. All positions receive mandatory paid training the month preceding both the primary and general elections. For information, call (800) 851-8754, or visit PascoVotes.com.
to $35,135 for his campaign so far. That’s well ahead of his Republican primary opponent Minerva Diaz, who has a campaign chest of just under $2,500 after pulling in $160 in February. Although she’s nowhere near the level Burgess is, the lone Democrat who has filed to run for the seat so far — Beverly Anne Ledbetter — raised just over $1,600 in February, bringing her total to $4,081. For Burgess, $2,500 of his February haul came from outside his district, including $1,000 from OD-EyePAC, a political action committee representing optometrists. Contributing $500 each were the Committee for an Innovative Florida founded by former Republican State Rep. Shawn Harrison, government relations firm Robert M. Levy & Associates out of Miami, and the Rebuild Florida political action committee, also out of Miami. Burgess also has apparently received an endorsement from the Zephyrhills News, that newspaper taking the unusual step of writing a $500 check to the candidate. Media companies typically avoid financially supporting political candidates. Ledbetter’s largest donation came from out of her district as well. Kim McLaughlin, described in campaign finance filings as a union representative from Burbank, Calif., donated $200 to the Democrat.
BILL WOULD MAKE GAS PUMPING EASIER FOR SOME
State Rep. Mark Danish, D-Tampa has joined forces with state Sen. Jeff Brandes, RSt. Petersburg, to ensure those with disabilities can get the appropriate help they need at the gas pump. H.B. 185 and S.B. 1184 are modeled after a Hillsborough County ordinance that requires decals on pumps that provide information on how to “call for assistance. Hillsborough passed its bill in 2012, and other counties have followed suit.
BURGESS LEADS FEBRUARY FUNDRAISING
Zephyrhills mayor Danny Burgess is $9,000 closer to winning the state House seat currently held by Will Weatherford, RWesley Chapel, after leading fundraising efforts in February. The latest influx of cash brings Burgess
