CHAMPAGNE The production of Champagne dates back to the early 1800’s. Monk Ruinart is believed to be the first to introduce followed closely by his close friend and the more famous Monk Dom Perignon of Moet fame. Joseph Perrier Royal Cuvee makes the perfect aperitif , appointed supplier to Queen Victoria and King Edward V11. The blanc de blanc elegant, Vintage 2008 charming and exotic . Roederer Vintage and Cristal are uncompromising with fine food. Pommery has been visited numerous times and any visitor to Reims must make this one of their calls. BODEGAS MARQUES DE MURRIETA Being fortunate enough to visit such a fantastic bodega it was fitting we strengthened our Directors’ listing with their two top flight reds. We hope you enjoy them as much as we did when we first discovered them. The Marqués de Murrieta was one of two key pioneers in the production of Rioja. This bodega was established in 1852 and is proudly old-fashioned in its approach. The wines are produced by traditional methods, in wood for a minimum of two years – much longer than at any other bodega. The bodega produces a small range which includes the Marqués de Murrieta, the glorious Castillo Ygay, and a very rare Reserva. Marqués de Murrieta The bodegas produce a small range of wines that include the Marqués de Murrieta, the glorious and very rare Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial (aged in excess of 36 months in American oak) and since 1995, a premium super-cuvée, Dalmau. The latter stands out for the inclusion of 10% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, alongside the 85% Tempranillo and 5% Graciano, but also for the use of small French barriques, in which the wine is aged for a period of typically 19 months. 322

CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE Chateau Mon Redon has been run by the same family for three generations. The estate has currently 100 hectares under vine. Chateau Mon Redon expresses its “terroir” in a wine vinified to exhibit deep, clean, intense fruit, ripe, balanced tannins and approachability without sacrifice of longevity. Its dense, purple-red colour suggests the aromatic nose of ripe black fruits offset by notes of spice, leather, coffee and pepper, which are confirmed on the palate. The rich, intense fruit flavours are set in a full tannic structure at once firm and ripe, carrying into a warm, sustained and complex finish. The vineyards flanking the lower Rhone River are believed to be the oldest in France. This river waterway was the first primary route of the Romans’ influence inland, and among other elements of their civilisation, they brought with them vine. Reference is made to a grape called the “picata”, named for its pitch-like taste and colour, the first grape to be planted, vinified, and later re-exported to Rome as wine. This grape is thought to be the ancestor of the Syrah, which has remained a principal vine of the Rhone Valley.

PORT Many grape varieties are used in the blending of Port, grown on terraced vineyards in Duoro Valley, which are so narrow and steep that nearly all the work has to be done by hand. The port is stored, matured and blended at the lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia, a suburb of Oporto. Many of the lodges are still controlled and managed by the British, hence the famous names of Taylors, Grahams etc.
