Abenaki Tower Walk Wolfeboro. Easy, gradual, ideal for families with small children; 1/3 mile, 20 minutes.  The climb to the tower is steep, but the views make it worthwhile.  Trailhead: from center of Wolfeboro at the bridge, go eight miles north on Rte. 109. Belknap Mountain Gilford. 21/2 hours, elevation: 740' Easy, invigorating climb to magnificent view of Winnipesaukee and the Ossipee Mountains.  Rte. 11A to Gilford, at the blinking light, drive south through Gilford Village (Belknap Mountain Rd.) Stay on this road, left and right. Look for Carriage Rd. on the Left. Pass the gate, go 1.3 miles to the end of Carriage Rd. Trails begin at the upper parking lot. Mount Major Alton Bay. Mount Cardigan Alexandria. Moderate to difficult. 4.4 mi., 4 hrs.; elevation: 3,121' Outstanding peak, excellent views. Base area has picnic spot, pond, AMC lodge, camping. Most of the mountain is in a state reservation, adjacent to AMC’s Cardigan Reservation. Trailhead: Rte. 3A north out of Bristol for 2 mi. At blinking light, left on West Shore Rd. to “sign tree” intersection; continue straight through Alexandria Village, then right on Cardigan Mountain Rd. Then several miles to Shem Valley Rd., which takes you to Cardigan Lodge trailhead. Stinson Mountain Rumney. Moderate difficulty, 21/2 hrs.; elevation: 1,390' Spectacular views of Baker River Valley, Franconia and Sandwich Mountain Ranges. Rte. 25 from Plymouth to Rumney. North through village to Stinson Lake. Right near outlet of the lake; drive uphill, take a sharp left into the parking lot.

Mount Chocorua Rte. 16, Chocorua. 3,500'. Challenging 4.3 mi. Piper Trail takes approx. 31/2 hours to summit. Great views of Sandwich Range. Trailhead: WM Nat’l. Forest parking off Rte. 16, 6.1 mi. south of Kancamagus Hwy. (NH Rte. 112). Watch for trailhead road.

Squam Lake area hikes

Rattlesnake Mountain Holderness/Sandwich. Easy, 1.8 miles, 11/2 hours; elevation: 1,260' Best view of the Squam Lakes. Old Bridle Path follows a cart route to the rock-covered summit. Trailhead: Rte. 113N from Little Squam in Holderness Village. Park after Rockywold and Deephaven camps; trail is across from Mount Morgan Trail. Look for “Old Bridle Path” signs as a privately owned trail is nearby. Red Hill Center Harbor. Elevation: 2,029' Rte. 25 to Center Harbor. In town center, take Bean Rd. for about 2 miles. Right onto a marked dirt road; follow to the base. Squam Lake Beach Trail Centre Harbor, off College Rd. Moderate difficulty; approx. 11/4 miles, 1 hour. ”Forest to beach“ walk through Chamberlain-Reynolds Memorial Forest to a cove on Squam Lake. Squam Lakes Natural Science Center Rte. 3/113, Holderness. Hiking up Mount Fayal, and several trails at the Science Center including Gephart, Ectone, and Davison Trails. Great views of Squam Lakes.

The Northern Rail Trail 56 mile long, 13' wide. Free outdoor activity venue, away from cars, along lakes, through river valleys and quaint New England villages. In warmer weather, the trail is used for bird watching, bicycling, running, walking & horseback riding; in winter, for cross-country skiing, snowshoe hiking and snowmobiling.
