For really spectacular views of our Lakes and Mountains, take a hike!

Mount Major

Lake Winnipesaukee area hikes

Abenaki Tower Walk in Wolfeboro. Easy, gradual, ideal for families with small children; 1/3 mile, 20 minutes.  The climb to the tower is steep, but the views of Winnipesaukee and the Ossipee Mountains make it worthwhile.  Trailhead: from center of Wolfeboro at the bridge, go eight miles north on Rte. 109. Belknap Mountain in Gilford. 21/2 hours, elevation: 740' Easy, invigorating climb to magnificent view of Winnipesaukee and the Ossipee Mountains from the summit.  On clear days, Mount Washington can be seen in the distance. Take Rte. 11A to Gilford and drive south through Gilford Village.  Stay on this road (it makes a sharp left) and begin to climb Belknap Mountain Road.  Follow until you see signs and parking on the left. Mount Major in Alton Bay. Moderate difficulty, 2 hours; elevation: 1,000'  Spectacular views from the summit make this challenging hike well worth the effort.  Trailhead: near the Lake Winnipesaukee scenic lookoffs on Rte. 11, about five miles north of Alton Bay.  A sign marks the parking lot.

Newfound area hikes

Mount Cardigan in Alexandria. Moderate to difficult. 4.4 mi., 4 hours; elevation: 3,121' Outstanding peak, excellent views. Base area has picnic spot, pond, AMC lodge, camping. Most of the mountain is in a state reservation, adjacent to AMC’s Cardigan Reservation. Trailhead: Take Rte. 3A north out of Bristol for approx. 2 mi. Left at blinking light onto West Shore Road for a few miles to “sign tree” intersection; go straight through the intersection. Take this road through Alexandria Village, then right onto Cardigan Mountain Road. Go several miles to Shem Valley Road, which will take you to Cardigan Lodge trailhead. Stinson Mountain in Rumney. Moderate difficulty, 21/2 hrs.; elevation: 1,390' Enjoyable hike rewards with spectacular views of Baker River Valley, Franconia and Sandwich Mountain Ranges. West from Plymouth on Rte. 25 to Rumney. Turn north, through village to Stinson Lake. Bear right near outlet of the lake; drive uphill, take a sharp left into the parking lot.

Ossipee area hikes

Mount Chocorua on Rte. 16 in Chocorua. 3,500', one of the most photographed & ascended peaks in the White Mountains. The 4.3 mi. Piper Trail, a challenging hike with exposed upper ledges, takes approx. 31/2 hours to the summit. Great views of the Sandwich Range and surrounding area. Trailhead: White Mountain National Forest parking off Rte. 16, 6.1 mi. south of intersection of Rte. 16 and the Kancamagus Highway (NH Rte. 112). Watch for marked trailhead road. Ossipee Mountain Range at Castle in the Clouds. 45 miles of trails operated by Lakes Region Conservation Trust. Mt. Shaw (2,975'), with views of the White Mountains and Bald Knob, with spectacular views of Winnipesaukee are most popular. Every hiking ability. Parking off Rte. 171 by information kiosk, east of Castle entrance and Severance Road, or from the Castle.

Squam Lake area hikes

Rattlesnake Mountain in Holderness/Sandwich. Easy, 1.8 miles, 11/2 hours; elevation: 1,260' The best view of the Squam Lakes. The Old Bridle Path follows a cart route to the rock-covered summit. Trailhead: Rte. 113N from Little Squam in Holderness Village. Park after Rockywold and Deephaven camps; trail entrance is across from Mount Morgan Trail. Look for “Old Bridle Path” signs as a privately owned trail is nearby. Red Hill in Center Harbor. Elevation: 2,029' Rte. 25 to Center Harbor. In town center, take Bean Rd. for about 2 miles. Right onto a marked dirt road; follow to the base. Squam Lake Beach Trail in Centre Harbor, off College Rd. Moderate difficulty; approx. 11/4 miles, 1 hour. This ”forest to beach“ walk takes you through the Chamberlain-Reynolds Memorial Forest to a cove on Squam Lake. Squam Lakes Natural Science Center on Rte. 3/113 in Holderness. There is hiking up Mount Fayal, and several trails at the Science Center including the Gephart, Ectone, and Davison Trails. Great views of Squam Lakes.
