Synopsis
uke Vincentio, called away from the city of Vienna, appoints his deputy Angelo to govern in his place. Angelo, enforcing Vienna’s long-dormant laws, quickly sentences young Claudio to death for getting his fiancée pregnant. When Claudio’s sister Isabella, a young novitiate, pleads to Angelo for Claudio’s life, her strong words (and beauty) stir him, and he agrees to pardon Claudio if she will surrender him her virginity. Isabella refuses, relating this to her brother in prison. The Duke, who has secretly remained in the city disguised as a Friar, overhears them and hatches a plan to save them both. He first persuades Isabella to accept Angelo’s offer, but arranges for Marianna, a woman once engaged to Angelo, to go instead. The trick is consummated and Angelo is fooled, but still orders Claudio executed. The Duke convinces the Provost of the prison to spare Claudio’s life. He then tells Isabella that Claudio is dead, and to seek justice from the Duke, who is about to return to Vienna. In a public square, Isabella and Marianna accuse Angelo before the Duke, but he scoffs at their accusations and departs, ordering Angelo to expose these false charges. However, he quickly returns, disguised again as the Friar, is finally unmasked, and the entire plot is revealed as he proceeds to set Vienna to order once more.
Director’s Notes “Judge not that ye be not be judged … with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.” – Matthew 7.2
Steven L. Williams............. Lighting Designer
Shakespeare begins Measure for Measure with the line, “Of government, the properties to unfold … ” He tells us quickly that this play will involve politics, and indeed it does. The Duke is struggling to lead his people out of the vice and corruption that plague their city. Shakespeare sets his play in Vienna, a world of extremes: the basest human urges and the highest spiritual aspirations. A city alive with whorehouses and nunneries, prisons and palaces. A world of substitution, locked rooms and disguises. We set the play in 1814 when Vienna became the center of the world. Napoleon had at last been defeated by the Allies and exiled to the Island of Elba. The Vienna Congress was where the world gathered that year to determine the future of Europe and to guarantee basic human rights. Beethoven had completed his Fifth Symphony and was going deaf. The Waltz was newly invented, the first time a man and a woman had ever embraced on the dance floor. It was the Romantic Era. Nature has triumphed over the imposed order of man and the Age of Reason is over. Against the backdrop of this corrupt city, a monarch unsure of his ability to lead, hides himself in order to watch how his deputy, the spotless Angel(o) will rule. “Hence shall we see, when power change purpose what our seemers be.” Why are Passion and Politics so inextricably linked? What are the consequences of the government legislating morality? Why do we resist and fear the most natural act in the world? How do we reconcile our primal urges with our highest spiritual aspirations? When is mercy the best course? When, the strict application of Justice? What happens when we repress our basic human needs? Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure grapples mightily with these questions and sometimes answers with an open silence. Listen.

Synopsis
eturning from war, Don Pedro, the Prince of Arragon, visits Leonato, the governor of Messina. With him are two of his soldiers, Claudio and Benedick. Claudio soon falls in love with Leonato’s daughter, Hero, and Benedick is reacquainted with his old flame, Beatrice, a spirited woman who wants nothing more to do with this brash and bragging soldier. The marriage of Claudio to Hero is arranged, and in the interim, Don Pedro with the help of Leonato and the young couple, plan to fool Benedick and Beatrice into falling in love. Meanwhile Don John, Don Pedro’s estranged brother, plots to disgrace Hero in public. He enlists his henchman, Borachio, to stage an encounter that will cast suspicion on Hero’s virtue. Claudio is tricked and then denounces Hero at the wedding. Accusations fly and Hero, in distress, collapses at the altar. Friar Francis, convinced of Hero’s innocence, persuades the family to hide her away until they can clear her name, saying that she has died of grief. Ultimately, with the unwitting help of the bumbling constable Dogberry, Don John’s plot is discovered, and Hero is exonerated. Claudio and his love are reunited (but not before one final trick is played on Claudio) and all wonder if Benedick and Beatrice, who have fallen in love, will wed alongside them.
Director’s Notes Sassy women — and the men who love them — have a long, proud tradition in our entertainment history. From Tracy and Hepburn to Pitt and Jolie, the quick-witted, snappy female has been a constant in movies and television, and an enduring staple of enjoyment: the romantic comedy. I am not a theatre historian, but it is safe to say that Shakespeare was part of the beginning — if not the very beginning — of romantic comedy, creating lusty, full-bloodied characters we still love today. Beatrice and Benedick are two stand-outs. Technically, Beatrice and Benedick are a subplot in the story of young Claudio and Hero, whose marriage is derailed by false rumors of infidelity and faithlessness. But Shakespeare gives this subplot the focus and importance it deserves, allowing us to revel in the quick-witted word play of these two compelling, charming, formidable characters. We know they belong together — and so the play becomes a delightful experience, watching them figure it out — and wondering why it takes them so long. The late 1940s was a time when sassy women had value, and independent-minded females were coming into their own. Messina, in Italy where Much Ado is set, is a sun-drenched port city, backed by the glory of the Mediterranean. Shakespeare’s sassiest, most independent-minded female — and the man who loves her — deserve this bright, sexy, sensual environment. Welcome to Lake Tahoe and Much Ado About Nothing!
