Our programs are up and running, mostly in person with a virtual/hybrid option, thanks to a lot of community partners. We've been grateful for all the warm and beautiful weather so we can hold the majority of our programs outdoors. Virtual fatigue is real with our families. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities we have at present and upcoming. They are: 1. An experienced computer programmer. We need assistance with our database development in Apricot, specifically with the reporting functions. A non-disclosure agreement is required as it will entail working with our families records as well as our Connect clients. 2. We need volunteers on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at our Brevard location to work at our reception desk, greet families, and assist with answering phones, the inputting of data, etc. Our reception desk is now enclosed with plexiglass and we follow COVID-19 safe practices. 3. We will be assembling at home kits for children/parents as an option for families for the upcoming winter months and could use a couple of volunteers to assist with this. 4. 5. GetSet Volunteer Opportunity We will need a group of volunteers to stuff approximately 400 take home bags. This is done at Keystone Camp with COVID-19 safety procedures in place. We, The Family Place, will have additional opportunities in the spring regarding our Learning Gardens and (hopefully) the much needed expansion of our Brevard location.

We have anywhere from 100 to 200 volunteers involved with supporting lessons, horse care, fundraising, office work, community outreach, and social media. Our two main categories are lessons and horse care. During lessons, volunteers are horse leaders that assist students to groom and prepare their horse for riding, and then lead the horse during the lesson or volunteers are sidewalkers that walk with the rider to ensure stability and safety on the horse and assist the student to focus on the lesson. Training is provided for both these positions. Horse care volunteers work directly with the horses in feeding, care, mucking stalls, walking and exercise and assisting in keeping the herd happy and healthy. P isgah Legal Services Pisgah Legal is supported by more than 400 volunteers who help us achieve our mission. Last year volunteers donated more than 12,000 hours, including 3,343 hours donated by volunteer attorneys. Non-attorney volunteers assist with office duties and client intakes, as well as through special programs like Affordable Care Act insurance enrollment and tax preparation assistance. Local volunteers also serve as ambassadors for Pisgah Legal to make connections to other local nonprofits, donors, and potential clients. In Transylvania County, we are actively seeking Volunteer Lawyers through our Mountain Area Volunteer Lawyer (MAVL) and Emeritus Attorneys Giving Legal Expertise (EAGLE) programs. When the Covid-19 situation is over we plan to increase the number of scholars that we are serving so at that point, we will need 10 -15 more volunteers. These volunteer tutors are critical for our program. Our volunteer tutors work with an individual scholar for an hour long session. During that time they complete homework and school projects, read together, and work on targeted academic skills. The relationship that develops shows the scholar that they are supported and loved. Currently, our tutors come one or two days per week. The schedule can be flexible based on the volunteer's availability. Rise & Shine operates Monday through Thursday from 3:30 until 5:00 pm. SAFE COURT ADVOCATE The goal of the Family Resource Center (FRC) is to ensure the client feels s/he has a support team surrounding them to help them navigate the legal system in pursuit of justice against their offender. The Court Advocate is a part of this team. In this role, they will provide support and reassurance to clients as they appear in court. For many, this may be the first time they will come face to face with their offender, which understandably can be a frightening or intimidating experience. Because of this tension, many of our clients never make it to court. Due to the significant uncertainty of this step, it is often the most nerve-racking part for the client, and therefore the time when many turn back. The role of Court Advocate then, is paramount in making sure the client has a sense of calm (as much as possible,) and a measure of unwavering support from someone they trust, and is known to them as part of their support team. Arrive at 8:30 AM to meet with client. Calendar call begins promptly at 9:00 AM usually on Tuesdays Thursdays and client must be in place in the courtroom for this. • At the direction of the Court Navigator, introduce yourself to the client • Provide moral support and listen to any concerns the client has. Determine if any need addressing prior to entering the courtroom. (Consult with Court Navigator if necessary.) • Reassure the client and ensure the client understands you believe him or her. • Provide a physical barrier in the courtroom between client and defendant to avoid stares, intimidation, etc. • If there is an apparent threat, arrange for a Sheriff’s deputy to escort the client, and possibly yourself, out of the courthouse • A criminal background check is required for this position. COMMUNITY OUTREACH EDUCATION Make presentations to schools, social service agencies, churches, businesses & professional groups that help increase awareness and understanding of domestic & sexual violence. Provide prevention education to school students that helps youth recognize abuse and develop healthy relationships. Present educational workshops that cover topics such as safety planning, domestic violence assessment, and the effects of abuse on children and community. Represent SAFE at outreach sites throughout the county and Cashiers to provide information about SAFE and its services. Place information in outlying communities.

Watch activity around the showroom— having more than one available person minimizes waiting and provides safety. Help bag/box items as needed at register and wrap up breakable items. Assist in bringing in smaller donations and take them to the back workshop area. Write tax receipts for customers bringing in donations and thank them. Assure that all items on the sales floor have a completed price tag attached. Keep furniture and décor neat and clean. Assist Interiors staff in cleaning the store and monitoring customers. INVENTORY/ UPKEEP SPECIALIST Inventory and/or organize supplies in Stacey’s House storeroom and check foodstuffs viability in pantry & kitchen. Fill out Shelter Inventory Sheet monthly. This can be done on any day and at any time convenient. CHILD CARE PROVIDER Volunteer(s) to spend quality time with children in the shelter doing arts & crafts, playing outside, reading to them, etc. Any time during the weekend would be best because all the children are usually in the shelter. This gives parents time to themselves to do what they need to do. A criminal background check is required for this position. LIFE SKILLS EDUCATOR Offer life skills instruction to SAFE clients, staff and volunteers in your field of expertise. Budgeting, financial management, job search skills, dressing for success, parenting, sewing, gardening, or cooking are just a few examples of possible topics. This person should have ‘cheerleader’ qualities that can not only get shavees excited about participating but keep them motivated about their fundraising. They will work with you to coordinate the check- in process and shavee schedule for the day of the event. Sponsorship/In Kind donation coordinator: This volunteer will be responsible for contacting local businesses and companies to request sponsorships and in-kind donations for events. Media/PR Coordinator: This volunteer will need to familiarize themselves with the St. Baldrick’s Media Talking Points. They will be responsible for contacting local media outlets (radio, magazines, newspapers, news stations, etc.) and distributing press releases. They will serve as the point of contact for media on the day of the event. Social Media Coordinator: This role is responsible for managing the event’s social media pages. They will create posts, share event information and post photos and updates. They will assist, encourage and engage with shavees using their own social media platforms and can reach out to the Event Coach or St. Baldrick’s Social Media team for ideas (great role for college events). General volunteer: help out the day of the event, assist with our 5K in October as a race marshal, distribute brochures and posters, set up and cleaning, etc.

In 2020, we reduced the volunteer numbers from our normal 130 per week, down to 40 per week, in an effort to mitigate spreading the virus. We know that some of our regular volunteers will not return, and we will be looking for new replacements for tasks such as pantry stocking, pantry shoppers, clothing sorters and attendants, receptionists and interviewers. Volunteers regularly are scheduled for one shift per week, for 3 hours. Also, we do have openings for volunteers to serve on our committees, such as Resource and Development, Communications, Human Resources, Finances, and Property.

At the end of the market morning, the volunteer would spend a few minutes helping to pack up that curbside area.
