Tradition V. Modern Throughout this decade our traditions have clashed with the new modern world. There are various things that have been fighting to be number one some new, some old, from flappers to evolution, this decade has been one to remember. We have fought hard for our values while others have tried to change us. And to think that the decade is not even over yet! For a long time people believed that how everything was made was God. Then, the new way of looking at is is that we came through evolution. Evolution is the thought that we came from a lower life form that adapted/evolved into what we are now, and people think that lower life form was a monkey. This idea became (and still is) very controversial, would this theory of evolution (also known as Darwin’s Theory of Evolution) be taught in schools? Lots of people didn’t like that idea, they didn’t want it to interfere with their beliefs and values, so they banned it from being taught in schools. But there was one problem with that, someone taught it. His name is Thomas Scopes, and now he is in a big court case called The State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes, but commonly referred to as the Scopes Monkey Trial. This is just one example of how modernism has clashed with traditionalism. (Go to Page 4 for the full article)
One of the biggest clashes of modern and tradition are women. While some were stay at home and traditional Gibson Girls, others are crazy, daring, modern women, flappers. From the hair and dresses to the activities, women now are very different. In fashion, activities, lifestyles, and hobbies there has been a major change in women. (Go to page 7 for full article) The clashing of women's fashion was what was told and expected vs the new more loose of fashion. I don't think that this is a threat to american values because women should be free to express how they want to dress not be told “you have to wear this and this and definitely not this”. Women were restricted to wearing long, big dresses which is what most people agreed was appropriate for women to. wear because it wasn't showing much skin, and now they are short and skinny which people didn't agree with at all. Parents and elders thought it was too wild and to out there. They didn't like it to an extent that they passed a law to discourage women from wearing short and skimpy things. I feel that that was wrong because nobody is telling the men how to dress and putting laws on them. (Go to page 8 for full article.)
Tradition V. Modern Continued Another way that they clashed would be when, the older generation judged the new generation based on their clothes, hair, and actions. This showed how much people didn’t really support the change. As you can see there are many things that clash in this age. Some good, some not so good. All these thing are so different, yet so similar because they are happening right now in our lifetime. Though not everyone may not agree
with everything or get along with everyone, people can agree that they like something about the 1920’s. Weather it is the fashion, music, lifestyle, choices, or anything from the variety, there is something for everyone to love. These are definitely some roaring 20s, and the best decade yet.
There are many differences in the current modern ways and our traditions. Not only looks, as you can see here, but behaviors as well as many other things. On the left you can see the modern way of things, and on the right is the traditional ways.
The Beginning Of It All In Dayton, Tennessee, walking to the court house, dodging people and carts selling stuffed monkeys and Bibles, reading banners that scream “Anti-Evolution League” and “Read Your Bible” William Jennings Bryan, counsel for the prosecution, had no idea that he was going to be called up to the stand today. Bryan is lead prosecutor charging John Scopes with teaching evolution in schools (which is illegal.) Many things could have been racing through his mind, possibly whether or not he thought he would win, or if the trial was more than teaching evolution in schools, or if the famous lawyer, Clarence Darrow, (defense attorney) would lose. Bryan was called up to the stand, which was odd for a prosecutor to be called up to speak, he was willing and confident. When Bryan was on the stand he received many questions from Darrow. At first he was very comfortable, but when asked if he thought the Bible should be literally interpreted (and as you know, that is how most of us interpret it), Bryan answered proudly that he believes everything in the Bible should be accepted as it is stated. Bryan was then questioned about how he interpreted the whale swallowing Jonah. His response, ”One miracle is just as easy to believe as the other. And of course God can do that”
But throughout the day between the back to back questions and the sweltering heat, his confidence lessened. Do you think that creation was in 6 24 hour days? Well, Bryan’s response sent people in many directions. He stated that he believed the creation was in 6 days, but that were longer than 24 hours. Not only were there many disagreements in regards to that, but it made some people connect evolution with creation, thinking that that if the days were really in millions of years, it could be a connection. This, along with a few other similar answers, created such a controversy that it appears Bryan had made a fool of himself. The courtroom was beginning to view him in a skeptical fashion.
Durring Scopes trial many people sold monkeys or Bilbes. This is a table selling Bibles.
The Beginning Of It All Continued Everyone had interpreted the Bible word for word, and then Bryan came along… Now what? With angered people and his confidence in the dumps, Bryan no longer liked the looks of this trial and what it had done to his reputation. With the day at court over, Darrow walked out of the courtroom feeling a little better about his case, while on the other hand, out walked a newly embarrassed Bryan, how many people had just been and will be affected by Bryan’s one answer? This case appears to have taken a turn. It looks like though Scopes is most likely guilty, the hidden case within this one is starting to rear its head. Is there more at stake that just whether or not evolution should be taught in schools? This case’s hidden meaning is being questioned even further. Is the first amendment's right to freedom of speech being affected by Bryan’s statement? Will that effect the decision if evolution can be taught in schools? Many people are unwilling to pay their taxes for schools to teach something that goes against their values. Wouldn’t you feel that way too? Kids should be able to choose what to believe, and not be forced to believe something that contradicts their parents beliefs. Evolution being taught in schools has just as much controversy as Bryan’s creation answer.
This twisting case may be changing lives, opinions, and beliefs. This is the case of the case of the century, and will be covered daily to follow all the changes.

Where Are The Gibson Girls? Where are all the Gibson Girls? First of all what are Gibson Girls? Well… A Gibson Girl is a caucasian female beauty such as the” fragile lady” and the ”voluptuous woman”. She is a calm, confident, and independent woman. But when the war ended a lot of young men didn't return home so there wasn’t a lot or husbands to go around. The horror of the war also gave the people the knowledge of life being so short and could end at any time. Instead of staying home preparing to marry a man who might never come, the young women wanted to spend what time they had enjoying all that life had to offer, by going out whenever smoking, drinking, getting jobs, partying and dressing differently. Before WWI, there was a very strict role of families and gender in society. So before the Gibson Girls turned into the flappers they stayed at home, cooked, clean, and took care of the children. Women weren't allowed to work But now since the war ended they changed and went out to get jobs. Most of the young women have jobs in the changing American economy. The clerking jobs are blossoming more than ever. Increasing phone usage they require more and more phone operators. The economy that depends on a large amount of spending customers saw a The consumer-oriented economy of the 1920s saw a rapid increase number of department stores. Women were mostly needed on the sales floor to help out and relate to other women with the latest fashion trends.
Also, the fashion changed. The young women wore long dresses, thin sleeves, tight corsets to create a hourglass figure, they had long hair, pulled back into a updo bouffant or pompadour. The young women had large bust and an impossibly thin waist. But now everywhere you go there are women with short dresses, short hair, less tailoring, no corsets, dropped waistlines created long slim figure, a tubular body shape which erased the feminine body shape.

New vs Old fashion
Flappers are women who have bobbed hair and short dresses. They are daring and stay up and party. This is currently the modern trend. (Above) Below is the Traditional form of fashion, much more coverage and layers.
Are The Youth Destroying Our Values? We’re the change that America has been waiting for! We’ve been in the shadows for far too long, it’s time that we show them what we’re capable of. We have a right to be free, we have voices that need to be heard and I think it’s time people heard us. They say that the youth today are disrespectful and “bold”. What they don’t understand is, the reason we’re acting this way is because, we’re finally free. We’ve been trapped inside for the longest time and we’re finally getting out of our shells and we’re happy about the freedom. We’re trying to figure ourselves out and we like who we are. For the first time we, as young people can speak, dress and behave the way we feel. I didn’t even know I could dance until recently when I was with a couple of friends and I heard music, it was Jazz and I could not stop moving my hips. I made friends that were boys, (my parents never liked me associating with boys) but because of this “change” I’m happy and other people are too. Recently, there were new clubs opened for the youth, like YMCA, YWCA, Boy Scout, and Girl scout, this way we can meet new people and also do interesting, positive activities. As a young woman, everything’s so exciting to/for me. Being able to walk around the neighborhood without getting judged by what I’m wearing is an extremely refreshing feeling.
There’s a whole new sense of freedom and I love it, I can go to clubs, I get to party, everything’s great. To be honest though, the older generation kinda ruined everything for us, they always compare us to them saying how they were never like this and always judging us by our clothing and our hair. I mean sometimes I do wonder if this change is bad but at the same time the excitement for life has been great, it’s like it’s always been like this and it’s a normal thing. We must show them how great life is now. The youth today have so much to offer. Don’t be afraid to let your voice be heard
