Ryan Patrick

&

SO, TELL US HOW YOU MET... PATRICK: We met through friends. We had crossed paths so many times over the years without realising. I still think it was fate. As soon as we met we hit it off, I only thought we’d be great friends. Ryan ended up splitting from his ex, and then one night when I was out with friends and we didn’t get into the club because I was far too drunk I ended up sitting outside McDonalds drunkenly eating a Big Mac and throwing chips and texting him to tell him I really liked him! RYAN: I wasn’t long out of a relationship when I met Patrick. I’m really glad I text him back! HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DATING DID IT TAKE TO POP THE QUESTION AND WAS IT AN IMMEDIATE YES? RYAN: Neither of us had that much of an opinion on marriage before we had that conversation. To be honest it was one of those “when you know you know” situations. We moved in together almost straight away. It felt right and we didn’t want to miss the chance to do it. It’s not like someone asks you to marry them

every day. It felt like the right next move, even if it was a bit earlier than most couples make that step. PATRICK: We moved in together quite quickly, before that I’d been living in Glasgow and just couldn’t stick living with my mum again after being independent for so long (sorry mum). About six months after getting together we were away for the weekend and started dunkenly talking about getting engaged. Neither of us ever imagined getting married, let alone getting married to each other. When we got home and talked about it again I thought, actually, why don’t we? TELL US ABOUT YOUR WEDDING DAY... PATRICK: The wedding day was amazing. I couldn’t have asked for a nicer day. Originally we decided to get married in Northern Ireland but going away to get married was the perfect solution. We’d both spent a lot of time in Scotland, so I mentioned the Corinthian Club in Glasgow. Ryan instantly fell in love with it. We turned the wedding day on its head by having our photographs taken in the morning. This meant that we got to

PAGE SEVEN gnimag.com

spend the afternoon with our family and friends. I have family who live in England that I don’t see very often, so it was important for me to be able to spend time with them. Everything at the Corinthian was spectacular; they were so helpful, from our first time organising everything through to being there on the day. I’m still devastated it’s over! The day passes so quickly. You really have to appreciate every moment. RYAN: The wedding day was unreal. When we chose Glasgow we thought hardly anyone would come, but they did! So we really made a weekend of it. Even with the travel we ended up with about 70 guests. The fact we run a wedding company together really put the pressure on to make our own big day extra special. Our friends and family were expecting a lot! We wanted a really classy event, but still with a casual feel. We didn’t want to put any pressure on guests in terms of transport and time restraints etc, so we arranged to have our photographs be taken in the morning by the amazingly talented James McGrillis. It allowed our wedding party plenty of time to get ready. After that we quite literally strolled through Glasgow from our hotel right the way to the Corinthian. Well, it wasn’t

quite direct, we made a few fun stops along the way. Not many couples get to say they went to the funfair on the day they got married. WHAT ABOUT THE FOOD AND DRINK? DID YOU HAVE A HONEYMOON? RYAN: The food is such an important part of every wedding ceremony. Working in the industry you always hear what people complain about, and a substandard meal is top of the list, so we opted for a modern menu with a great selection. And who doesn’t love a few bottles of champagne! For fun we made each of our guests a little personalised gift bag. Every one of our guests got a totally customised present from us, something personal or special. It was a huge undertaking but it was worth it to see their faces when they realised what we’d gotten them. We haven’t taken a honeymoon just yet. Our business is doing great so we can’t really squeeze any time off just yet to have one yet. PATRICK: The food at the Corinthian was beautiful. I’ve never seen a wedding meal like it. Of course the drinks were

flowing. One thing we both agreed from the beginning was that we wanted brilliant food and loads of drink, and we didn’t disappoint. We didn’t have a live band - we aren’t that kind of couple - so we opted for a DJ to play our favourite music throughout the night. HOW ARE YOU ENJOYING MARRIED LIFE? PATRICK: Married life is good. We haven’t killed each other yet. I guess once you start living together things tend to be very similar once you get married. Not a lot changes, but I couldn’t be happier. I’m with the person who makes me smile more than anyone else. To be honest I can’t really remember single life any more. RYAN: It’s been great so far. Because we live and work together it means business as usual, but it’s a lovely feeling of security and comfort. I think we’ve noticed a bit of a change from the way other people treat us as a couple. I suppose it means we get taken more seriously now that we’ve tied the knot. All in all it’s been fantastic. Married life feels wonderful.

PAGE EIGHT gnimag.com

ARE YOU INTO THE SAME THINGS? WHAT INTERESTS DO YOU HAVE THAT ARE DIFFERENT? DO YOU DO EVERYTHING TOGETHER OR DO YOU LIKE TO KEEP INDEPENDENT? PATRICK: We are into a lot of the same things, so we spend quite a bit of time together. Everyone wonders how we can go to work together and still have things to talk about, but at work we are both constantly doing different things so we aren’t always tripping over each other (only sometimes). I thing we’ve found a good work/life balance. RYAN: We do enjoy a lot of the same things. We are big into our movies and binging on box sets, then again what couple isn’t? We love our nights out too, and of course our art and design. I think that’s how we manage to live and work together so well. Having the same interests reduces the chances of us eventually killing each other.

Beth Morena

&

SO, TELL US HOW YOU MET...

again. Funnily enough, she didn’t say no.

BETH: I met Morena on a training course. I was nervous meeting lots of new people so I was talking a lot more than usual, which is already a lot! Morena kept looking at me with what seemed like disgust which made me even more nervous. When my parents asked me how my first day went I said, “well everyone seems nice but there’s this one girl... I don’t think we’re going to get along.”

MORENA: I proposed to Beth around two years after we met. I never really saw marriage in my future before we met, I knew from before that first kiss that she was the one for me. I took her to the beach and wrote “Will you marry me?” in the sand. She said yes immediately, but I didn’t have any doubts she would turn me down.

MORENA: When I met Beth she was talking like a washing machine. She was this tiny wee thing who didn’t shut up all night! It wasn’t until the next time we met that I thought “Oh hello, maybe I can put up with her talking.” HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DATING DID IT TAKE TO POP THE QUESTION AND WAS IT AN IMMEDIATE YES? BETH: In childhood, I’d always dreamed of a big wedding but I gave up on all that when I realised I was gay. Morena changed everything for the better. I’d been thinking about proposing but Morena got there first. A few months later I took her to London where I proposed

TELL US ABOUT YOUR WEDDING DAY... BETH: Our wedding day was amazing. It was April and the weather could have gone either way, but when the wedding cars pulled up the sun came out on cue and it was gorgeous. We had 110 guests for the main day so it was quite intimate. The ceremony and reception were all held at Riverdale Barn. It was perfect. The first time we saw it we fell in love and booked it right away. Our ceremony was held in the stone barn which was beautifully decorated by Suzanne Flowers (we were laid back about the planning and let Suzanne work her magic). When Morena walked up the aisle I felt very emotional but I reminded myself that tears would ruin my makeup. She was stunning. We

PAGE ELEVEN gnimag.com

got the civil official ceremony out of the way quickly and our Minister Chris Hudson from All Souls performed a blessing. This made the day for me. His words were beautiful and poignant and having him there reflected us as a couple. We also had a friend sing and readings by a few others who are close to us. Everything in the ceremony had some meaning for us both. The theme of the wedding was vintage/ retro and all our touches fed into this theme including personalised mason jars. My brother made a speech on behalf of all my siblings and, yes, I was very red-faced at the end, although most of the stories I don’t remember... MORENA: Our day was all that we hoped it would be. Although the registrar asked me twice if I was there of my own free will, so maybe I looked nervous! My dad walked me down the aisle to The Dixie Chicks ‘Lullaby”. Despite being unable to walk very far with a medical condition he was determined to do it. I fell in love with Riverdale Barn as soon as I saw it and we weren’t disappointed on the day, it looked stunning with hundreds of candles and an open fire. I think I was much more of a bridezilla than Beth. I was obsessed with wedding magazines

and wedding favors. I loved our vintage/ retro theme and everything reflected us as a couple. We designed our own favors and had custom made drinking jars for all our guests. Initially, we had decided not to have cars as we found it difficult to find anything other than the usual wedding-type car which didn’t fit us at all, but we found Classic Vehicle Hire, Killyleagh and ended up with four vintage cars for the day. One was an old Police car and we even had an old ambulance! They were very quirky. My best friend made a speech on behalf of my brother who couldn’t make it over from Australia. We all ended up in tears but it felt like he was part of the day. I loved our wedding so much I can’t wait to plan our renewal! WHAT ABOUT THE FOOD AND DRINK? DID YOU HAVE A HONEYMOON? BETH: We both love a good wedding and wanted to make sure our guests had a great time. We wanted the food and drink to be plentiful. Instead of wine on the tables we had cider and beer pitchers along with the traditional Prosecco and Champagne for the toasts. Our guests also didn’t go hungry with scones in the

afternoon, four-course meal later followed by a barbecue in the evening. We even had a sweetie table and marshmallows for toasting. Our honeymoon was in Washington DC and San Francisco, the highlights being our personal tour of the Pentagon and Alcatraz. MORENA: Our day was perfect. We had everything we wanted and made sure that our guests were well fed and watered. We had a traditional Irish band and fabulous magician to entertain during the day while we were having our photographs taken. In the evening we had a country band and then a DJ set by the same guys. I loved our handmade personalised chocolates by The Chocolate Manor and our personalised sweet table. Afterwards, we enjoyed a mini-moon in Kilkenny straight after our wedding weekend, then we headed to Washington DC and San Fran.

ducing Morena as my wife. They say the first year is the hardest and we survived that with no bloodshed. MORENA: I guess I find it odd when people ask this question. We were together a long time before we got married so we know each other inside out. Married life is all good. ARE YOU INTO THE SAME THINGS? WHAT INTERESTS DO YOU HAVE THAT ARE DIFFERENT? DO YOU DO EVERYTHING TOGETHER OR DO YOU LIKE TO KEEP INDEPENDENT?

HOW ARE YOU ENJOYING MARRIED LIFE?

BETH: We share some interests but we are also quite different. Either way, we like to support each other in our pastimes. I never really watched football until I met Morena but now I shout at the TV as much as she does! Morena likes the news and I like Game of Thrones. I’m so lucky to have met the person who makes my heart smile. Everything is made better when we do it together.

BETH: We had been together almost seven years before we got married so we know each other pretty well. It does feel different being married and I love intro-

MORENA: We are very different but I enjoy doing things that Beth enjoys and vice versa. Everything is better together. She even gets the offside rule now!

Tony Darren

&

SO, TELL US HOW YOU MET...

used to!

DARREN: We met online on Gaydar in April 2009. I had dated a little but working in a church made it difficult to be openly gay.

TONY: We’d been together for about five and a half years before we decided to make the leap. We’d thought about doing it a few years before but we never seemed to have the money. It came to the point where if we didn’t just do it, regardless of whether we could actually afforded it, it would never happen.

TONY: I’d been dingle for a few months before we chatted on Gaydar. I was working in an office in Millisle and heading to Dublin for work that afternoon. Darren was doing a concert in Ballymena, we met that night when we both finished work. He walked into my kitchen, I offered him toast, and the rest is history. HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DATING DID IT TAKE TO POP THE QUESTION AND WAS IT AN IMMEDIATE YES? DARREN: I knew after a few weeks that I was falling for Tony though it took us six and a half years before we got married. We have certainly had a few rough and tumbles along the way. Two head strong men trying to live together certainly took some getting

TELL US ABOUT YOUR WEDDING DAY... DARREN: It was amazing. It was a large affair in Monaghan and I had lots of my musical friends and colleagues contribute to the ceremony to sing and play for us, which was just perfect. I tried to surprise Tony by singing a song during the ceremony but I think he had an idea I was going to do it, nevertheless that was emotional and special for both of us. The Hillgrove Hotel were incredible hosts for a wonderful reception and hosts for a wonderful reception and the speeches were probably a little embarrassing for both of us. I’m

PAGE FIFTEEN gnimag.com

pretty sure I mentioned Tony being naked in the corridor of a hotel in the middle of the night in mine! TONY: We had our wedding in the Hillgrove Hotel in Monaghan with around 220 guest celebrating with us. Because it was a bit of a drive away we invited all of our guests to the full day. The speeches went well, Darren’s friend put on a slide show with a few embarrassing pix of him, and my cousins speech mentioned my many fabulous erections (in Lego). WHAT ABOUT THE FOOD AND DRINK? DID YOU HAVE A HONEYMOON? DARREN: Again the Hillgrove gave us an amazing meal being one of the few hotels to offer Silver Service and I think everybody loved the entertainment. We had a bit of a cabaret show with the fabulous Roisin Sharkey and Robert Brown, then Trudy Scrumptious and Cherrie On Top brought the house down with their songs and antics! Company B were fantastic giving everyone 80s hits and

the wonderful Kenny Kane was our DJ into the early hours so the guests were very entertained. We couldn’t afford a honeymoon so had a little break the week after and took a trip to Amsterdam after Christmas. TONY: There was entertainment from start to finish. Darren works in music, so he put together a mini-choir to sing us down the aisle to Anthem from my favourite musical Chess. During the ceremony Darren surprised me by getting up and performing ‘Forever Love’ at the grand piano, then Conleth Kane sang us out of the ceremony to ‘Everything’ by Michael Buble. The evening entertainment was a cabaret show, starting with songs by Robert Brown and Roisin Starkey, followed by a drag show with Trudy Scrumptious and Cherrie On Top. After that the band Company B started their set with our first dance song (‘Photograph’ by Ed Sheeran), then Kenny Kane took to the decks so we could party into the wee small hours before heading to the residents

bar in the hotel. HOW ARE YOU ENJOYING MARRIED LIFE? DARREN: It ’s much the same. We are normal guys with kids and a mortgage and jobs. But it ’s lovely to have celebrated our love publicly and declared it officially and legally. Hopefully Northern Ireland will recognise our marriage status soon! TONY: Our life is pretty boring so not much has changed. Still the same routine of work, kids and lazy nights on the sofa. We actually completed the legal part of our marriage on the Tuesday after our wedding. We were one of the first same-sex couples to get married under the new legislation in the ROI. It felt a bit frustrating and disheartening that literally two hours after doing the legal bit, when we were back in good old Northern Ireland, that our marriage wasn’t recognised as a marriage. Things will change here though.

PAGE SIXTEEN gnimag.com

ARE YOU INTO THE SAME THINGS? WHAT INTERESTS DO YOU HAVE THAT ARE DIFFERENT? DO YOU DO EVERYTHING TOGETHER OR DO YOU LIKE TO KEEP INDEPENDENT? DARREN: We both enjoy eating out, socialising with friends over a few drink, movies and travel. But probably my work being music related take me into areas Tony isn’t so interested in like choirs and classical music, but that ’s not an issue. It ’s healthy and good for us to enjoy things apart too. TONY: Darren and I have our own friend groups and different interests - this is great because it allows us to retain a bit of independence. Darren is more into musical culture and eating out, and I’m more KFC and getting drunk. But it works, opposites attract and all that.

ump the Broom Wedding Photography is all about allowing your personalities to pop out of the pictures, with a little help from me...!

THE LITTLE THINGS: It is thrilling to follow your whole day; the touches that have made it yours; hers and hers dressing gowns, Mr. & Mr.’s matching rings, flowers in wellies, whatever makes it so you, I’ll get it all. DISCRETION: The art of taking pictures without you even noticing is one I take great pride in. Whether the mums are welling up, or the guests are letting it all out on the dance floor, I catch those real moments without disrupting them. MEANING: Weddings are about love and celebration and I make sure that these aspects shine through in the images of the day. Whether a civil ceremony or a pagan rite, how you do your day means so much I will capture what’s important. RITUAL: Joining together in love is an ancient rite, one that everyone should be able to take pride and joy in, and I would be honoured to be a part of yours.

A

ye Do’s founder, professional illustrator Ruth Graham, works from her studio in Co.Donegal where she dreams up stationery for couples who shun the traditional. With a focus on everything bright and cheery, and a motto that boldly states that their invitations are for ‘fun people only’, you’re more likely to find a unicorn than a diamanté on these bad boys. There are no templates, no stock images or no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to be found here. Instead, get your guests excited for the big day ahead with an invite that they’ll remember - an invite that they’ll say is ‘so you’. A selection of ready-to-order styles are available to buy on their website, plus their custom design service means that eclectic couples can have something totally personal made just for them - from illustrated maps of the all-important venue to portraits of their (even more important) pet poodles; all 100% Instagramable. After being meticulously hand-drawn the designs are generally produced onto fine Italian card but Aye Do’s creative background means that they’re ahead of the pack when it comes to doing things differently - they have designed everything from acrylic invitations and save-the-date skateboard stickers to animated email attachments. The only limit is imagination and it looks like they have plenty.
