MODERN FAMILY

Design team Medium Plenty crafted this South Pasadena home to please three generations.

WORDS BY RAMONA SAVISS

PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARIKO REED

Design team Ian Read, Gretchen Krebs, and Andy Pittman of Medium Plenty worked on this home that was made for a family of five (a couple, two children, and grandmother). The forever home is a restored, original Tudorstyle space from the front, given modern additions to the back.

The design trio used elements to connect the two facades, such as the stained, black-slatted wood overhang.

“The goal was to honor the original bones of the home while opening it up to maximize light and space and create a clean, warm, modern environment,” says Krebs, co-founder of

Medium Plenty (alongside Read).

The 1,600-square-foot main home also has a 500-squarefoot ADU with a loft, where the children’s grandmother lives.

“Multigenerational living was a major component in the design,”

Krebs adds. The main house has three bedrooms (plus an office that doubles as a guest room) and two bathrooms for the family of four. There’s also a yard between the main home and the ADU. The design team’s aesthetic—“Warm modern with a nod to classic midcentury and unique Scandinavian details” shines true throughout the property.

◗ PREVIOUS SPREAD The modernized back of the house still keeps the home’s Tudor style intact but with modern touches. The primary bedroom and bathroom are housed on the right side, framed in angled cedar siding. Indoor-outdoor living was important to the family, which results in the large windows that open up, leading to the backyard. “On the left is the kitchen and dining that opens up to the back deck and yard via a folding-door system that the clients leave open most of the time,” Krebs says. The red chair on the deck “is a whimsical outdoor piece called the Spun chair by Magis,” she adds. “It is a fairly iconic outdoor piece of furniture and also feels like sculpture—we liked the pop of color and that it is approachable for kids.”

◗ THIS SPREAD Opposite top: The dining room is seen from the side hallway. Here, an interactive chalkboard painting wall is on the right. The wooden dining table is decorated with vintage Eames chairs and Marvin wooden slideand-fold doors lead to the backyard, tying in the earth elements. The dining room looks onto the backyard and ADU, which was originally the garage.

Opposite bottom: “We were required to keep the original front facade as is and so all changes are in-kind upgrades,” says Krebs about the design restrictions they had to navigate around—only upgrading the windows and stucco facade on the exterior. “The only new addition is the wood porch and black trellis overhang at the entry. The garden was redone by the owners with native, drought-tolerant plants.”

Above: For the living room, Krebs says, “The fireplace and beautiful curved ceiling were preserved along with the original windows that were replaced in-kind. We love to keep strong, original elements and feather them into the new design whenever possible.” In line with keeping original elements, all of the furniture in the living room is the clients’. The family has many vintage midcentury pieces and fabrics as well as previously owning the George Nelson Bubble Lamp hanging above the room. All of the paint throughout the home is Benjamin Moore.

Below: In the unique kitchen, a custom bookshelf and cabinetry made of walnut wood wraps around into the living room to house the client’s record player and record collection, Krebs says. “We often integrate built-ins like shelving and banquette seating into our designs as a means to unify the design, personalize, and give function to it. The client has a lot of books and things to display so this was a perfect way to do it.” Plus, she says, the round skylight adds to the straight lines in the space. “It has a subtle blue inside of it that mimics the sky and changes subtly throughout the day.”

Opposite top: The loft, located in the ADU, which was converted for the grandmother, is mainly used for storage. “The grandmother prefers color and an eclectic space and has many antiques, so the colors were at her request,” Krebs says. “The space is small so the varying colors give visual interest and depth and help to define the areas as separate.”

Opposite bottom: The dining table doubles as a place to do homework and for the family to gather, Krebs says. The lighting above the table is another George Nelson pendant. “The doors slide and fold to open up the space. The clients have since installed some Tensile Shade structures over the back deck, which allows them to mitigate the sun exposure and use the space most of the year. The indoor and outdoor feel connected, like one big space.”
