Eaton Canyon Falls Trail BEGINNER
Eaton Canyon’s easy proximity and approachable trails makes it a popular choice for hikers of all ages and abilities. Stop by the nature center for docent-guided tours and family nature walks. Be prepared to cross streams on strategically placed rocks and logs. Cool off and splash around in the pool at the base of a 40-foot waterfall before turning back. The 4.4-mile trek out and back takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes with a modest elevation gain of 592 feet. (1750 N. Altadena Dr.)
Mt. Wilson Trail Hike ADVANCED
Mt. Wilson is north of Pasadena in the Angeles National Forest and boasts an impressive 5,710-foot summit, complete with an an observatory for stargazing and plenty of park benches to enjoy the panoramic views. Experienced, fit hikers can traverse this long alpine trail of 14.5 miles, which takes approximately six to eight hours out and back. Be sure to bring snacks, water, sunblock, bug spray, proper hiking shoes, and even trekking poles for this advanced trail. (Santa Anita Canyon Rd., Sierra Madre)
Mt. Lowe Railway Trail MODERATE
Mt. Lowe Railway opened in 1893 o bring visitors to Echo Mountain Resort, a project that never materialized, yet the scenic railway itself was a popular tourist attraction for 45 years before closing in 1938. Begin the 5.8-mile trek out and back at the Markham Trailhead on Mt. Wilson Red Box Road. Venture down to Inspiration Point and Mt. Lowe Trail Camp where you can find ruins of the Alpine Tavern.
