Relaxed Performance 16th February @ 3.30pm Linbury Theatre, LAMDA Running Time: 75 minutes Content warnings: Contains themes of an adult nature, racism including strong language, suicide, violence and scenes of a sexual nature.


RELAXED PERFORMANCES AT LAMDA • You are welcome to come and go from the theatre as you need. • There is a break-out room available. • House lighting is on low throughout, never going to full black-out. • Loud noises are reduced in sound level. • No strobe lighting Is used. • You are welcome to react to the show however you may need. • At the end of this document is a show synopsis/sensory guide.

Arriving at LAMDA

When you arrive at LAMDA, the box office is to your right. You should pick up your ticket here, using your name.

You will be asked to show proof of double vaccination using the NHS App, or a negative lateral flow result taken in the last 24 hours. Unless you are exempt, you will be asked to wear a mask at all times while in the building.

Toilets are located right next to box office.

Toile

LAMDA staff will be wearing LAMDA branded T-Shirts. If you need any assistance whilst in the building, please ask them.


This is the Theatre Foyer. You may be asked to wait here until the house is open. You will be shown how to get to the Linbury Theatre by an Usher.

This performance will take place in the Linbury Theatre. This is the entrance.


When you enter the theatre, an Usher will take your ticket from you. You are welcome to sit where you like.

You can come and go from the space whenever you like. The house lights will stay on low throughout the show.

There is a break-out space called ‘The Rittner Room’ which you are welcome to use at any point during the performance. It can be accessed via the stairs or lift in the main entrance foyer.

If you aren’t sure at any point during your visit where to go, please ask an usher.


Before the show begins, the actors will introduce themselves and the characters they are playing.

The lights in the theatre will dim and she show will start. You can come and go as you need through the doors you entered by.

At the end of the show the actors will come on and bow. You are welcome to clap at this point if you would like.

SHOW SYNOPSIS / WHAT TO EXPECT

Sensory Guide

Throughout the majority of the show you can hear fireworks and beats of sound in the distance.

The stage is dimly lit. Lights fade. The sound of loud fireworks is heard.


John and Christine talk about a broth that Christine has made under the orders of Julie to give to a dog who is pregnant, to lose the puppies. The oven is a prop, and not hot.

John and Christine are betrothed to be married. They talk about being servants in a white family.

Throughout the next couple of scenes, offensive language is used, and references to imperialist Britain are made, and racism.

As Julie goes to leave to go dancing, a very loud firework goes off, and an increased volume of fire crackers and music.

Music plays as Christine dances with the red dress.

Christine lights fragrant incense sticks.


Julie and John become intimate, Christine wakes up suddenly and interrupts them.

John and Julie have an intense conversation. Julie pushes John. Their voices are raised, and John recounts a time that Julie was sexually assaulted and he saw it happen.

The music begins to increase in volume, and the fireworks get louder. The lights turn red. A Dragon costume is used to dance around the stage with.

The Dragon dance becomes frantic. The Room gets trashed and is a mess.

A clock chimes. The next morning. Julie is visibly upset.

Christine enters. Julie shouts at her. Christine explains that the Dog which has had the broth will die.


John and Julie argue passionately. They hurl offensive language at each other. John grabs Julie, pushes her to the steps and puts his head between her legs.

John and Julie continue to fight, their voices are loud.

Julie asks John to hit her. He does. She is distressed. She speaks of how her mother killed herself.

Julie threatens to accuse John of rape.

Christine enters, she slaps John across the face. She shouts at him. They argue in raised voices.


John and Julie are preparing to leave, but Julie won’t leave her bird. John takes it, and puts it in the broth of posion on the stove. Julie is absolutely distraught. She is left alone in the room. She lifts the dead bird out of the pot, and drinks the poison herself.

Julie is found by Christine, dead, on the floor. Christine cries out. She removes her red dress And adopts the garments of a nun.

Christine is at the top of the steps. The lights fade out.
