Stick Fly Company Headshots

Below is a sensory guide for the performance that shows potential distressing actions in the play, split up by scenes During each scene change, there is a loud buzzing sound of flies, which can be quite intense, and loud music. The main lights are also removed so it is quite dark on stage, but there is a light from the back, so you can see the characters silhouettes. Any fighting scenes in the play have been choreographed with a fight director so that the actors do not hurt each other.

ACT 1 Scene 1 No distressing action. Scene 2 The character of Dad uses strong language, and is derogatory about his son, Kent. He gets louder and shouts at Kent as he doesn’t believe that being a writer is a good life choice. Scene 3 No distressing action. Scene 4 There is a loud buzzing of a fly as Taylor catches it and puts it in a jar, and then onto the table. Cheryl then swats and kills the fly.

Scene 5 Throughout this scene there is a build up of tension as Taylor talks about her time at university. Flip uses a word that is a strong racial slur. Kimber often disagrees with Taylor, and Taylor gets extremely agitated, and uses very strong language and shouts at Kimber. Taylor and Flip have a conversation in the kitchen, where we find out more about their history. Flip is saying cruel things to Taylor, which has music underneath to make ther scene very tense.

INTERVAL ACT 2 Scene 1 Dad sits on the porch and lights a pipe with a real flame. Cheryl uses strong language on the phone to her mother. She has just found out that her father is not who she thought it was. but is actually the character Dad. Later on in the scene, Dad discusses with Taylor that sexual assault would have happened in generations prior to them, and that is how his wife’s family have the house they are stood in and the wealth. Taylor shows Dad her father’s books, that do not include her in the dedications, which she is upset about. Scene 2 No distressing action.

Scene 3 All of the characters are drunk, and loud. Flip uses a lighter and smokes a joint - this is not real or harmful, but you will likely smell the herbal tobacco. Later on in the scene, Kimber tells Taylor that her sister took her own life and describes the act of her suicide. We soon find out that this is a lie. Cheryl gets off the phone with her mum and is visibly upset and angry. She starts shouting at everyone, and it is revealed that Flip and Kent’s Dad is also Cheryl’s father - he slept with her mother, the maid, 18 years ago and has been lying about it since. Scene 4 Strong language from the beginning of the scene. Kent and Flip have an argument about their mother, and are shouting at each other. Cheryl is extremely upset about the situation. Kent finds out that Flip and Taylor have previously slept together and punches Flip in the face. Flip is bleeding - this is fake blood. Scene 5 Throughout this scene there is a lot of arguing and shouting between the characters and they are all highly emotional.
