Ripple Library

Community Library Individual project Year 2 fall “As our circle of knowledge expands, so does the circumference of darkness surrounding it.-Albert Einstein This is a community library design located in city center. As the site was originally a park. An underground library together with park design can attract people in different ages enjoy the space. The form of library comes from ripple, meaning the expanding of knowledge. By utilising the character of light pond. The library create a new experience for reading.

Site aspects

Library car service is now aimed at children only. Teenages and elderlies should also be covered.

User in different time interval

This is an energetic community, many children come and play in the afternoon.

The site is surrounded by old buildings. Library design should be harmony to the surrounding buildings.

It is relaxing to read under natural light.

A road is made due to too many people walk on the garden. Landscape planning should spot out common route for access.

Some area of the park is not commonly used. An underground building can fit into these unused area and fully use the space.

Some old trees should be preserved as it is part of local's life.

View from underground library Like in the aquarium, library under water makes people calm and enjoy enjoy their books. As water is transparent liquid, visitors can have visual contact but not isolated from the community. Also, water can filter the UV light, which is harmful to books. The library creates an environment benefit to the users and books.

Re-Birth

Local Shopping Mall Individual project Year 3 fall Wan Chai is an old distract developed almost 50 years ago. It is very cloudy and the city design like leisure space is not up to standard in 21 century. By designing a new shopping mall, creating spaces for gathering and shopping for modern living to make the society energetic once again.

Bio Tectonic Structure

Synthic structure inspired by nature Individual project Year 4 fall Every creatures on earth is well designed. The relationship between body structure and living habit is subtle. "Form follows function" is one of the most important concept in modern architecture. However the ideas are applied in evalution on living bodies for thousands or even hundreds of millions of years ago. This project is learing from nature and apply in architectural design.

Study from living bodies

Octopus can change their color by squeezing their cell

Thigh, lower let and foot are in similar proportion and maximise the angle of movement. So that cats can jump high and absorb the impact force effectively when landing.

Eductainment center Education + Entertainment center Individual project Year 4 | Semester A This center is materializing the feelings in a journey by architectural language. In this center, people can feel the changes from uncertenties about the journey to clear, hope and have faith on the trip. It is the main theme for the education contant. Moreover, by transforming by architectonics, lots of spaces with different meanings is going to be discovered. That becomes a puzzle game for people discover with fun.

Landscape design

The landscape is designed in wave pattern to emphasize the nautical journey center. Waves amplitude increase gradually from the road to water fornt. Representing the excitement of journey.

From the idea of wave, crest and trough have different properties and color. In the landscape design, there will have larger plants on crest like trees. But the size of plants will decrease to the trough and leave the trough as a path

Forest, wood, lumber are the most important material to make a ship in the past. Not only the nautical journey of human is presented in the museum. the journey of wood is also implies in the design.

There is a floating dock. Holding by pins at two sides, the deck can move up and down when waves come. It is a strong connection, taking people from the land to the ocean and experience for a journey.

Function and concept Outdoor Cafe : This space is not only for commercial activities. But also providing a place for rest. and prepare for the next journey. So the cafe is at the highest floor of building. People can see the most of part in Kai Tak and Kung Tong harbour, deciding the next destination.

Open design on top floor : People can always undersatnd what is happening on this floor. As the journey comes to the end, everything is clear, predictable.

Exterior exhibition space : Enclosed between the sea and upper deck. The sound of sea wave amplified, also the wet and darken environment reminds people that they are still travelling on the ocean.

Half height wall : Facing the stairs, welcoming people to move deeper and take a look. Provide separation conceptually. So people on this floor have more interaction(visual/ movement). The envirement become less stress. Stair becomes less steep, people can see upper floor directly.

Half height partition wall : Brings in the natural light from river side and guide people walk through the wall to find an activity room. Separating the 2 zones of exhibition, Activities and serious exhibities.

Atrium on first floor : So far from G/f but close to 2/f, to describe the relative movement between destination and home town in a journey. As the journey start for some time, wall panel gradually changed to create a brighter envirment

Mini Theater : For video display, window on side brings in the sparkling to strengthen the mood of a journey on the ocean

By controling the natural light comes in from top of building. Ground floor keeps darker and implies the restless at the beginning of journey.

Light Guiding system - Velux design competition Group : credits to Tracy Ho, Fanny Yiu Year 3 fall This is a competition for lighing design in architecture. The guiding system is based on existing bridges design and aims to modify the circulation in the city.

Elevated walkway-New layer of a city

Flow pattern

Footbridge is an important part of streetscape in HK. They take a heavy duty of circulation. Without guidance, people may walk in wrong path and block the way. To maximise the efficiency of passage a smart guiduance system is designed to redirect the flow direction

Flow pattern on foot bridge is clear. In day time, most of the people going to the office area and flow pattern reverse in the evening. By dividing the bridge according to the proportion of pedestrian, the efficiency can be maximised.

The story of 'Balance'

The linear cycle

The forces in nature balanced by itself, when the balance is in equilibrium, the ideal state of nature and cycle is achieved.

We try to narrate the process of balance through spatial experience and the form of the sculpture. The abstracted story of how a nature regaining its original state of balance after the interruption of human.

The process of balance in nature's cycle involves human's interruption with the cycle, causing the balance to be distorted and change shape, but with positive actions and nature's self-regenerating character, the balance can be reinstated eventually.

Also this represents another layer of story - the cycle being presented in a linear experience, when the people enters and go through the whole sculpture, the sculpture will tell the story of how a nature goes from origional balanced state to another new balanced state with the help of its self-healing nature and the effords of human.

Site Inspiration

1. RESPONSE TO SITE

- Curvilinear from complements the STF building - Echoes with surrounding context 2 elements metaphor as 2 forces. cross and connected to create spaces.

They can be variate in desity

5. DENSITY CHANGES

- Variation in lighting conditions - Direct the view of the user

2. WAVE FORM

Interplay of contrast: rolling lawn VS negative & invisible wave in sculpture

3. ENJOYMENT

4. SPATIAL EXPERIENCE

- Interaction with sculpture - Relax - Visual appreciation (lights)

- Balance + Imbalance - Varying density + enclosure
