THE COHERENCE OF VOIDS Site planning project Individual project Master year 1 Semester 1

What is design? Is it from subconscious or randomness? This project is start from drawings, studying the space and line in-between. Then developed as a design language. From the study, it was discovered that the connections between patterns are strong. If Architecture is considering the pattern as massing and space, those space within is not an empty space only. It’s a network of void. All of them are connected in different methods. Including physical paths, visual connections, orientations on floor plans, function of the spaces etc. With close connection, the development will hold different part of the city tight and create a better environment for the people living in.

LIECHTENSTEIN 2050 Town planning project Individual project Master year 1 Semester 2 (Exchange semester)

What would happen in the future? How could a town planning propose a better life for citizens? Liechtenstein 2050 is a project, based on the current situation of the county and propose a new planning in the future. In the project, underground hyper speed transport is proposed as a back bone. Supporting the heavy vehicle transportation and free the ground floor as a leisure and pedestrian friendly area.

RE-BIRTH Local Shopping Mall Individual project Year 3 fall Wan Chai is an old distract developed almost 50 years ago. It is very cloudy and the city design like leisure space is not up to standard in 21 century. By designing a new shopping mall, creating spaces for gathering and shopping for modern living to make the society energetic once again.

Site analysis

Shops nearby The market at Gresson Street is famous for the small stores. It is fit for small business, like fruit and vegetable salling in wet market. The new shopping mall provided s m a l l c o m p a r t m e n t s s o a s to preserve the small business.

Location: Queen's road east, Wan Chai, Hong Kong Site area: 2 300 SQM Permitted plot ratio: 3

Shops nearby Furniture and home design shops are also popular in the district. Usually they need a large shop for display and storage. The shopping mall provided large shops especially for this kind of shops.

Buildings nearby The buildings are relatively low rise, and they are in grey tone. To reflect the view of the district. The height of shopping mall is minimised and fair face concrete facade panels are designed.

Surrounding building 1-5 Floor

The city is lack of vegetation, they are separated and surrounded by tall buildings. To compensate the problem, The shopping mall provided a large roof garden for leisure use.

6-20 Floor

20+ Floor

The buildings nearby are mainly lower than 5 floors. To preserve the city context, The coverage of shopping mall is maximised so that the building height is lowered compare to those building with small footprint.

Design development

1. The site is on a steep slope, the level difference between frontage and the back is approximately 10.4m.

2. To attract people, an internal path is created. Connecting the highest and the lowest street of the site. It benefits people from climbing up the slope in a more relaxing way.

3. As there are several streets connecting to the site, access are provided to the streets to increase accessibility.

4. In order to ecoh with the market at Gresson Street. An large opening is pointing to the street and create visual connection. Moreover, an event space is facing the street to connect the vibrance between the street and the event in the mall.

5. As the city is compact with residential buildings, light pollution should be carefully controlled. The upper part of opening is reduced. So that the light leak out at high level can be diminished.

6. At the point slightly higher than the surrounding buildings, a roof garden is designed for leisure and observing the city. Moreover, providing green space in this concrete covered city.

Design concept (Forces affecting the development) Re-Birth : Re-define the concept of redevelopment for both city and building

1. Old building

2. New life within cracks the shell

3. Give up outdated parts

Starting with the historical background, Wan Chai is an old district with colonial style.

To suit the usage nowadays. Redevelopment project launged over Wan Chai.

Preservation does not means keeping all the existing. Drop out the unnecessar y is also important.

4. Opening expand for exploring

5. Expand vertically

6. Expand horizontally

Like the city, the building should open up and sccept influence from outside.

As a step forward from the old building. New functions mal

The facade split into dif ferent peaces, representing the back and forth steps in design

* Performance and celebration of festival can be held at the event space and echo with the vibrant of the street market outside.

* The event space is visually connected with most part of the mall.

*Different size of shop mix is provided to fit various types of business.

*4-5/f is for leasure and design shops, the density of shops are reduced to create good mood.

*Green roof provide various possibilities of activities, also increasing the vegetation can reduce heat island effect in the city.

BIO TECTONIC STRUCTURE

Every creature on earth is well designed. The relationship between body structure and living habit is subtle. "Form follows function" is one of the most important concept in modern architecture. However the ideas are applied in evalution on living bodies for thousands or even hundreds of millions of years ago.By understanding the mechenism of cats and octopus, a transformable system can be developed and use in architectural design.

Cat is one of the great master in body movement. The high flexibility bone structure can apply on building to support moving part.

Octopus can change their color and become invisabe. By control the durface area of color cell, the proportion of color can be changed.

Skin study Color cells are divided into layers under octopus's skin. By control the durface area of color cell, the proportion of color can be changed.

BALANCE Sludge Treatment Facility sculpture design competition Group: Credits to Ruth Lun, Jennifer Ho Year 4 fall

The story of 'Balance' The forces in nature balanced by itself, when the balance is in equilibrium, the ideal state of nature and cycle is achieved. The process of balance in nature's cycle involves human's interruption with the cycle, causing the balance to be distorted and change shape, but with positive actions and nature's self-regenerating character, the balance can be reinstated eventually.

The linear cycle To narrate the process of balance through spatial experience and the form of the sculpture. The abstracted story of how a nature regaining its original state of balance after the interruption of human. Also this represents another layer of story - the cycle being presented in a linear experience, when the people enters and go through the whole sculpture, the sculpture will tell the story of how a nature goes from origional balanced state to another new balanced state with the help of its self-healing nature and the effords of human.
